MisOr dad: Let our liberation an inspiration in fight vs poverty
CAPITOL COMPOUND, Misamis Oriental, June 12 (PIA) – Development can be reached only if we produce our way to it and dare what our forefathers did in winning the challenges to liberate us.
In his message during the commemoration of 121st Philippine Independence Day, Misamis Oriental Governor Yevgeny Vincente B. Emano expressed his optimism that the liberation we have gained would be an inspiration in the fight against poverty and the limited opportunities so the poor would be freed from hunger and hardship.
As we commemorate the Philippine Independence Day, Gov. Emano urged the Filipino people to respect and salute our forefathers who sacrificed their lives so we will be saved from slavery.
Thousands have laid their lives so that we may live with the dignity and rights befitting of a free nation.
The governor further said patriotism and the spirit of the Filipino led our triumph against the shackles of slavery and abuse.
“Kung walay kagawasan, wala kita’y kaugalingong pangalan, walay kaugalingong panlantaw, walay kaugalingong dungog, ug walay kaugalingong nasud,” Emano said.
(Without our independence, we wouldn’t have our own name, vision, prestige, and our own nation)
Recalling the sacrifices of our nation’s heroes, Gov. Emano expressed his respect to the lives lost during the war. Without them, we wouldn’t experience the freedom saying, “Let the spirit of their sacrifices lives on.”

The Death of Our Identity Through Diminution of Use of Filipino Language
Argumentative Essay by 2015-46180
For many years, there has been a sudden drop of usage of our own native language due to reasons that people thought of as a positive one. For global competitiveness, in 2013, the Commission on Higher Education or “CHED” has issued a memorandum order (20 - series of 2013) that states that the Filipino subjects that are being taught from the General Education Curriculum (GEC) will be removed and that, Filipino subjects taught will be limited to Filipino majors and Education in Filipino majors (Viray, 2015). For formality in several situations, Brian Collins (2014) who is a BA Linguistics & Slavic Languages graduate from the University of Washington, stated that, many Filipino speaking people do not take you seriously when you’re using it in the internet and that many institutions rarely use the Filipino language in formal or academic situations.
Due to these recent happenings that are rampant here in our country, the country has responded in several ways. Due to the issuance of the memorandum, it raised a lot of eyebrows especially among professors of universities and non-government organizations including Tanggol Wika, which pushes for the retainment of Filipino subjects in the new General Education Curriculum (GEC) in college and continue to push a nationalistic way of educating the college students by using Filipino language as a medium of instruction in different subjects offered in college (Geronimo, 2014). And for the mentality of avoiding the usage of Filipino language in different situations, according to Antonio Contreras (2014), most of the filipinos have exchanged the filipino language as their colonial “other” even if it is their native language. This is due to the notion that their perception of filipino language is “jologs” and because of that, it is not academic enough to use in situations where formality is called for.
My stand on this issue is that, if we keep on having this negative perception of using and promoting our own language, it will lead to the decline and eventual death not only of our native language, but also our culture.
I have several proofs that these movements are not doing our culture a favor. To give a background, a country’s culture is essential for human beings since it is the key for people to identify themselves and fit in the groups. Culture is also the characteristics and knowledge of a particular group of people, encompassing several factors that make up a culture (Zimmermann, 2017). Most of the factors are art, music, food, government, religion and clothing. (Aspects of Culture, n.d.). But among all these aspects, language is the most prominent one. Language is the most fundamental to cultural identity. Once you hear what dialect a person is speaking, you can easily distinguish what his/her ethnicity is. However, because of the movements that were stated earlier, there is a higher chance that the extinction of our language will come sooner or later.
The first proof that the diminution of the use of Filipino language among the millennial generation is supplementary to decline of our own culture is the study conducted by the Film Academy of the Philppines. This study shows that more or less 100 local films are released in the box office every year as compared to 180 Hollywood films that are released in the box office every year. (ABS-CBNnews, 2012)
The second proof is the drop of patrons when it comes to promoting Original Pilipino Music or “OPM”. A study conducted by Hamzah in 2011 shows that more and more filipino artists view opm as inferior compared to western music because majority of the singers make albums that are 80% covers of western music. The top two top-selling artists here in the Philippines, Ogie Alcasid and Gary Valenciano, have used this strategy to keep their patrons who are supporting their music.
The last proof is that nowadays, Filipinos favor the English language more than our native language due to the fact that in the college setting, Philippine History is now taught in English rather than in our native language. This clearly shows that our culture is not taught in its entirety because one of the most important aspects of our culture is not highlighted in the teachings; and that is language.
However, due to these recent movements, mentalities and perceptions that the people embedded on the minds of Filipinos, there are still knowledgeable people who know that these can still be done in a different way. A way that will help us be globally competitive but at the same time, promoting who we truly are. There are several projects/programs imposed by the government and non-government organizations to counter these movements that they perceive to be wrongly imposed. Few of the examples are the establishment of Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino and the celebration of the Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino.
The National Commission for Culture and the Arts established Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF) to undertake, coordinate and promote researches for the overall integration of our native language in the modern era and preservation of its entirety. (Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino, n.d.).
For the entertainment scene, the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FCDP) held a festival called “Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino” on August 22, 2017. This festival is a nationwide week-long celebration that showcases twelve local films that encompasses different genres and features local directors which have produced films that are locally made. The beauty of this festival is that movie theaters nationwide exclusively screened these 12 local films; displacing foreign films for this special event (Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino, n.d.).
Having the knowledge of these programs, it shows that we are aware of the problem. But this does not encompass all of the filipino millennials who are affected by the diminution of the use of Filipino Language. The problem doesn’t stop there. We should always strive to reach all people and that is why we need to think more so that we can address the problem better.
This is an alarming state to us Filipinos because after learning that language is the essential part of culture, we know that these recent movements and these perceptions of Filipinos will lead to the death of our identity. We should have the initiative to use and promote what is ours because who knows, if we don’t address the problem as an important one soon, we might be too late.

Done watching Rurouni Kenshin (Samurai X)
Tumblr media
From the famous anime SAMURAI X comes a movie that brought the famous batusai into reality. And for a “Rurouni Kenshin” fan such as myself, it was certainly worth the wait.
Tumblr media
Thanks to the gorgeous cinematography, the beauty of old-world Japan was captured in every frame, from the opening battle sequence in the snow to the bustling streets and quaint houses bathed in warm yellow tones. The fight scenes were beautifully executed. Very little CG animation was used, mainly to provide the blood spatter. Instead of death-defying stunts, the movie employed special tricks to give the characters the illusion of speed and agility during fight scenes. The highlight was seeing the iconic stances for Kenshin’s Twin Dragon Flash technique and Saitou’s left-handed thrust. For diehard RK fans, watching them unfold was as historic as watching Kenshin’s priceless “Oro?” face being reenacted by a real person. Now, people have actual models to imitate.
Tumblr media
It goes without saying that many of us had been waiting for this for over a decade, and it’s easy to see why it had taken so long. When it comes to adapting one of the best-loved anime/manga series of all time, it’s understandably difficult for film producers to meet the sky-high expectations of fans from all over the world. Besides, you can’t really pack 95 episodes and a few OAVs into one movie. Worst case scenario, it turns out to be a horrible Westernized disaster (“Dragonball: Evolution,” anyone?).
Tumblr media
Here are five reasons why you should watch this awesome movie.
1. It was made in Japan.
No offense to Americans, but leave it to the Japanese to direct and star in their own masterpieces. Those who have seen the American-made critical failure “Dragonball Evolution,” which was based on the much-loved “Dragon Ball” series, should know this very well.
While it is produced by Warner Bros., the live action “Rurouni Kenshin” movie was directed by Keishi Otomo, who took a lot of time writing the script, focusing more on the characters’ emotions instead of relying on exaggerated wire action scenes (there still are, though) and computer graphics.
Otomo also had the support of Nobuhiro Watsuki (the original author of the manga and anime series) as he was doing the film, so he was right on track.
It’s just like when you’re looking for a good Japanese restaurant. How can you usually tell that the place is good? If the chefs and cooks are Japanese, and there are plenty of Japanese customers. Of course, there are exceptions.
2. The casting was spot-on.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Getting “Kamen Rider Den-O” star Takeru Satoh as Himura is probably the best decision that Otomo made in connection with the film.
Aside from being able to pull off the protagonist’s outfit and long red hair, Satoh effectively portrayed Himura’s character, down to the smallest details – from the way he runs, jumps and draws his sword, to his sleeping position and the light moments when he delivers his signature line: “oro?” Emi Takei performed well as Kaoru Kamiya, a strong-minded woman who runs a dojo left by her late father, and Himura’s leading lady of sorts. She looks simple yet pretty, just like in the anime and manga, but at some point it seems like her acting is subdued – she could have been more tomboyish, particularly in the scenes when she is with her lone student, Myojin Yahiko.
The Japanese actors who played the roles of the rest of Himura’s gang – Yahiko, the rough and rowdy Sanosuke Sagara and the flirtatious Megumi Takani – were exactly how I imagined them while watching the anime. The same goes for the antagonists – from the creepy Jin-e Udo to the money-minded Kanryu Takeda – and even the random thugs and police officers.
Perhaps the only noticeable difference between the portrayals in the manga/anime and in the live action movie was Hajime Saito, a former member of the special police force Shinsengumi who eventually became a spy agent working for the Meiji government. Although he looked way better than the Saito sketch, Yosuke Eguchi played the part well, being able to pull off the character’s left-handed stab called the “gatotsu.”
3. The backdrop was incredibly accurate.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The live action “Rurouni Kenshin” movie was set against a backdrop of 1870s Japan that is so accurate it’s scary. Every detail was well thought out, from the wooden boards and bath at the Kamiya dojo and Takeda’s mansion, to the Akabeko restaurant where Himura’s gang would usually hang out to eat and celebrate.
Combine these with the perfect cast and you’d feel like the “Rurouni Kenshin” manga and anime were literally brought to life.
4. The story was well-woven.
It is a huge challenge for any filmmaker to fit the many characters and storylines of a long book or series in two or three hours. Thankfully, Otomo was able to do things properly for the “Rurouni Kenshin” live action movie.
Of course, this was not done without altering some of the scenes in the original material. Although the changes are not that obvious, fans would easily notice how some characters played a double role, and how others were suddenly made to fight when they’re not supposed to, for instance.
Otomo did a great job of removing the unnecessary scenes and characters, and giving more attention and depth to the more important ones, making every second of the movie count.
5. It will bring you back to your childhood.
Just the sight of Himura doing his thing with his sakabato or reverse-edged sword is enough reason to catch the live action movie, as this will make you reminisce the good old days, back when you stopped all your activities to tune in to “Rurouni Kenshin” on TV.
And I am not alone in thinking this. The audience, composed mainly of people in their mid-20s, can be heard cheering and roaring loudly throughout the movie -- something I have not witnessed in a long while. Several moviegoers were even talking about the scenes non-stop after leaving the theater.
To those who have not watched the anime or read the manga, don't fret – whether you're a die-hard fan or a newcomer, you will still get that warm and fuzzy feeling the moment Himura says "Tadaima."
