So this is a lovely piece of fiction, but now I have to tell you a true story.
When @behold-my-squees and I were kids, we were friends with a neighbor kid, Caroline. She was given a Gigapet as a present.
Driven by amoral curiosity (the same impulse that later led to many lethal experiments in the Sims) Caroline wanted to find out what happens if you *don’t* feed your digital pet and *don’t* clean up its pixellated poops.
What happens is, the pet dies, and it sings a little funeral march song. The one you’d hear in cartoons, it’s by Chopin, you know, it goes “dunnn dunnn dadunnn dinnn dadinnn dadun dun dunnnnn”.
except something strange happened, and instead it sang “dunnn dunnn daDEEEEEEEEEEEEE” and just kept going on that one note.
We tried pushing all the buttons in every combination. The game would not continue.
We tried hard-resetting the game with an unbent paperclip up the little hole. It would not reset.
We tried removing the little flat battery. THE GIGAPET KEPT SINGING.
Now we were freaked out, and also annoyed by the neverending digital tone. We took it out to the driveway and smacked it around with a hammer. This accomplished little more than scuffing the plastic. We were keeping our distance like it was going to bite us, hitting it and then running away shrieking, so our hammer technique was not in the best form. Also that gigapet was built like a freaking Nokia.
Caroline had heard something that sounded cool about dangerous battery acid, so the next step was to put the battery back into the gigapet and plunk it into an unused goldfish bowl full of water. We grabbed some spare AA batteries from the junk drawer and tossed them in for good measure.
That lasted a few days before Caroline’s mom found the experiment and made her discard the battery potion. The gigapet was still going, but its speaker had gotten corroded and now it made a horrible yodeling digital death screech.
We decided to bury the gigapet ceremoniously in Caroline’s back yard so that the evil spirits possessing it would be laid to rest, and know peace, and not haunt us for our crimes.
Several years later, Caroline’s mom decided she wanted to build a patio. While they were digging, they found the gigapet! (Also a turquoise Barbie comb that had caused bitter accusations of theft when it was first lost.)
The gigapet was beat up and faded and covered in dirt
but if you put it close to your ear, you could still hear it whining and gasping like an asthmatic computerized mosquito.
I’m not 100% certain what happened to it after that. I believe it was thrown into the trash and taken away by the garbage truck. An ignoble and anticlimactic end.
I have no idea wtf was up with that gigapet. My best guess is that some part of its primitive circuitry fused???
anyway that’s the true story of the undead gigapet
the first physical object to break the laws of thermodynamics was invented by accident. a regular lithium ion battery that would never need to be recharged.
it was made by a mindless robot in a mindless factory. inserted into a cheap and durable mp3 player on June 5th, 2004.
the unassuming device was shipped to a walmart and bought as an 8 year old girl's birthday present. she happily filled it with mp3s her dad helped her download.
she never noticed the battery's unending lifespan, because she diligently charged it every night. on October 12th, 2004, she unplugged her headphones without pausing her music: Hillary Duff's self titled album, on repeat.
on October 13th, 2004, the device fell out of her pocket while she was swinging on a swingset. It landed in the mulch her dad put under the swingset to stop her from getting hurt. He loves her so much.
she never found the mp3 player. she cried and sobbed, and her mom bought her another one the next payday, October 21st, 2004. the little girl's second mp3 player would fully drain its battery 6 times before she stopped using it, on January 7th, 2007.
Hillary is still singing silently into the dirt, not even an output for the same 17 songs repeating only to the worms. a tulip patch was unknowingly planted over it. the girl died on March 19th, 2073, her wife knew it was coming, but mourned all the same. Hillary had the same repeated lyrics to say.
the last time this woman thought about Hillary Duff was on December 25th, 2056, while reminiscing about music she listened to in her youth with her wife. Hillary Duff was still singing for her as she brought her music up, even if the woman didn't know.

Bought another scanner: VuPoint Magic InstaScan (ST420)
The VuPoint Solutions Magic InstaScan Portable Smart Scanner lets you easily scan, archive and organize all your files without having to connect to a computer. This portable scanner can accept documents up to 90” long with scan quality up to 900 DPI and saves your files to a microSD memory card up to 32GB.
Found one at the thrift for $8 and it powered on, so had to bring it home. Had to, I tell ya! I didn't expect greatness from what is essentially a document scanner but marketed as a digital photo scanner, and greatness it isn't. These are still going for $50-$150 so paying $8 seems fair for what you get.
Tumblr media
They weren't kidding about portable. Runs on four AA batteries, stores to a MicroSD card, and the USB jack on the end is for connecting to the computer for offloading photos from it at a removeable drive (not for running the scanner with the computer or powering it, unfortunately). It does 300/600/900 dots per inch, can scan to JPG or single-page PDF, and scan in color or black and white.
Below are the three test prints I'm using:
Tumblr media
All pretty clear photos, with one mostly dark and one mostly light to check the range and sensitivity. No button to push, just insert the print into the slot and it goes. Now for the scans:
Tumblr media
Pretty dark and fairly red. Here's something I have an issue with: You can calibrate this using an included paper, but of course since I don't have that, I can't calibrate the device! Other models have a button setting to tell it to calibrate so you can run a plain sheet of typing paper through, but this one starts a calibration automatically signaled by whatever is printed on that test sheet that I don't have.
Tumblr media
It takes 8 seconds to scan a photo, which many would consider a plus. But even at 900dpi it pixelates photos pretty badlly (look at her face) as though it had been snapped with an old 1mpx digital camera. Which I suppose makes sense if you consider that the above image was originally 6" horizonally but rendered at 1728 pixels horizontally, rather than larger. I shudder to think what 300dpi looks like.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay, now for an actual beef: You don't get the same results if you scan horizontally as vertically. (See the right side of the swingset.) There's no reason why anything should be cropped! Widthwise the scanner can hold something 8.5", and impressively can go out to 90"(!) vertically as the source image rolls through, so why....
It's also more clear in another test photo I'm not sharing that it will scrunch images horizontally if the original is scanned vertically; in my test, it made a subject's noticeably narrower.
So let's call this a quick(!) and dirty way to scan prints, and can't do anything about slides. It might be fun to try on medium-format negatives since they may be wide enough to trigger the scan!

This technology has been used in many popular games, including Final Fantasy XV and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.
Anime-Inspired Visuals
Anime has been a major influence on Japanese gaming culture for decades. In recent years, game developers have started to incorporate anime-inspired visuals into their games. This has resulted in some truly stunning and unique game graphics.
One notable example of this is the game Persona 5. The game features a unique art style that is heavily influenced by anime. The game's graphics are a mix of 2D and 3D elements, which gives it a unique look and feel.
Another example is the game Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom. The game features a beautiful anime-inspired art style that is reminiscent of Studio Ghibli's films. The game's graphics are highly detailed, and the game world is filled with vibrant colors and stunning landscapes.
In conclusion, Japan has made significant advancements in game graphics and aesthetics. The use of real-time rendering technology and anime-inspired visuals has resulted in some truly stunning games. As technology continues to evolve, we can expect even more impressive graphics and aesthetics from Japanese game developers.

One of the most significant breakthroughs in gaming AI is the development of more realistic and dynamic non-player character (NPC) behavior. NPCs are characters in a game controlled by the computer rather than the player, and they play a crucial role in creating a rich and immersive game world. In the past, NPCs were often static and predictable, with limited options for interaction with the player. However, recent advancements in AI have enabled game developers to create NPCs with more complex and varied behavior.
For example, some games now feature NPCs that can learn from the player's actions and adapt their behavior accordingly. This creates a more realistic and challenging gameplay experience, as the player must constantly adjust their strategy to account for the unpredictable actions of the NPCs. Additionally, some games now feature NPCs with more realistic emotions and personalities, which can make the game world feel more alive and immersive.
Procedural Content Generation
Another area of innovation in gaming AI is procedural content generation (PCG). PCG refers to the use of algorithms to generate game content such as levels, maps, and quests. This can greatly enhance the replayability of a game, as each playthrough can be unique and unpredictable. In recent years, Japanese game developers have been at the forefront of using PCG to create more dynamic and engaging games.
For example, some games now use PCG to generate levels that are tailored to the player's skill level, creating a more challenging and rewarding gameplay experience. For example, when a player is hit in a game, they might feel a vibration in their controller. In Japan, there has been a lot of innovation in haptic feedback technology, with companies developing new ways to make players feel more immersed in the game.
One example of this is the use of haptic suits, which provide full-body feedback. These suits can simulate sensations such as heat, cold, pressure, and even pain. They can also provide feedback based on the player's movements, allowing for a more realistic and immersive experience.
Another area of innovation in haptic feedback is the development of more advanced controllers. These controllers can provide more nuanced feedback, allowing players to feel a wider range of sensations. They can also be used in conjunction with other technologies, such as VR headsets, to create a truly immersive gaming experience.
Overall, we can expect to see continued innovation in haptic feedback technology in Japan, with developers finding new ways to make players feel more connected to the game world.

The Importance of Play: How Switch Adapted Toys Can Change Lives
Play is an essential part of childhood. It's more than just a fun activity—it's a critical component of development. Through play, children learn to interact with their environment, develop cognitive and motor skills, and build social connections. However, for children with disabilities, accessing the benefits of play can be challenging. This is where switch adapted toys come in, revolutionizing playtime and making it inclusive and beneficial for all children.
What Are Switch Adapted Toys?
Switch adapted toys are regular toys that have been modified to be activated by a simple switch. These switches can be large buttons, pads, or other easy-to-use devices that make it possible for children with limited motor skills to engage with the toys. The simplicity of pressing a switch to activate lights, sounds, or movements allows children with disabilities to experience the joy of play independently.
Our switch adapted toys are adapted to allow individuals with physical disabilities the opportunity to play and learn as independently as possible. With the use of a switch, a person with disabilities can be an active participant in fun, meaningful accessible activities. Our adapted toys and switches are interchangeable and compatible with most toys and switches sold by other companies. Our goal is to provide affordable switch adapted toys  that teach social skills, cause & effect, language, and sensory awareness through playing and interacting with the environment.
Boosting Cognitive Development
Play is a powerful tool for cognitive development. Switch adapted toys can stimulate cognitive abilities by encouraging problem-solving and decision-making. For example, a child might learn cause and effect by pressing a switch to see a toy light up or move. This kind of interaction helps develop critical thinking skills and promotes understanding of the world around them.

12 Ways to Charge NiMH Tool Batteries
NiMH (nickel-metal hydride) and NiCad (nickel-cadmium) batteries are two of the most challenging batteries to charge properly and safely. These nickel-based batteries do not allow you to set a maximum charge voltage, so overcharging can result if you are unaware of the proper charging methods for nickel batteries. Learn how to charge NiMH Craftsman 13014500  batteries so you can avoid potential charging problems.
1 Using a Battery Charger
Get a smart charger made for NiMH batteries. Avoid using chargers that aren’t specifically made for NiMH batteries since you could accidentally overcharge them. Instead, find a smart charger that has a microprocessor and thermistor, which are used to detect the battery’s capacity and temperature while it’s charging. You can get chargers with a set or adjustable current outputs. Check local electronics or hobbyist stores to see what chargers they have available
2  Take the battery out of the device. Look for the slot or compartment on your device that contains the Craftsman 315.110340  tool battery or battery pack and remove the cover panel. If the batteries are standard sizes, simply pop them out from the compartment by hand. If you have a larger battery pack, you may need to unplug wires connecting to the device first.
You may need a screwdriver to access the battery compartment depending on the device.    If you aren’t sure how to access the battery in your device, check the instruction manual.
3  Find the capacity printed on the battery. Take the battery out of the device whenever you’re going to charge it. Check the battery for a number labeled in milliamp-hours (mAh) to find your battery’s total capacity. If you can’t find the capacity listed on the battery, check the packaging or search for the brand and size online so you can find out.[3]
Rechargeable batteries slowly lose capacity the more you use them, but your charger will still be able to detect the maximum charge it can hold.
4 Slot or plug the batteries into the charger. If you have standard size batteries, such as AA, AAA, or D, look for the slot of the same size on the charger. Push the negative end against the spring so the positive terminal presses against the other side of the slot. If you have a battery pack with wires, plug it into the port on the side of the charger.
5 Charge the Craftsman 11034  drill battery at C/10 for the safest and slowest option. Divide the battery’s capacity by 10 to find the safest C-rate, which is the charger’s output in milliamps (mA). Use a charger that has that set energy output, or use the buttons to adjust the output level. Leave the battery connected to the charger alone overnight. While it will take the longest for your battery to fully charge, it’s less likely to overheat or break since there isn’t a strong current flowing through it.[5]
For example, if you have a battery with a 2,400 mAh capacity, then you would use a 240 mA C-rate on your charger.    Don’t charge your batteries in parallel since the current won’t be distributed evenly.
6 Use a charger with a timer and at a C/3.33 rate for a fully discharged battery. Chargers that have timers run for a set amount of time before automatically shutting off. Divide the capacity by 3.33 to find the optimal output setting for your charger. Cycle through the charger settings using the menu buttons until you reach the output you need. Once you attach your battery to the charger, leave it plugged in until the charger finishes running. Unplug the battery as soon as it’s done just in case there are any issues with the timer.
Avoid using a charger with only a timer if you don’t know the actual capacity of your tool battery for  Craftsman 315.270850 since you could easily overcharge it.    The timer in your charger may reset if there’s a power surge or an electrical issue.
7 Set a 1C rate for the quickest charge. Click the button’s on your charger’s output settings to change it to the same reading as your battery’s capacity. Don’t leave the battery unattended while it’s charging since it’s more likely to overheat or get damaged. Your charger will track the capacity and the temperature of your battery and stop providing a current when it’s finished.
Usually, charging at a 1C rate will take less than 2 hours to get a full charge.
8  Calculate how long to leave the battery on the charger with (C x 1.2) ÷ C-rate. Plug the battery’s capacity into the equation and multiply it by 1.2, or 120%, since NiMH drill batteries for Craftsman 27127 require more power to charge than what they output. Then divide that answer by the charger’s C-rate to find out how long it will take for your battery to fully charge.
For example, if you have a 1,200 MHA battery and your charger outputs 100 mA, your equation would look like: (1,200 mHa x 1.2) ÷ 100 mA.    Simplify the parenthetical: (1440) ÷ 100 mA.    Divide by the C-rate: 1440 ÷ 100 mA = 14.4. So it would take 14 hours to fully charge your battery.

Smoke Alarm Battery Replacement
Tumblr media
Most smoke alarms come with a battery that needs to be replaced at least once a year. But most people forget that and don’t do it.
That’s a big problem, because it can lead to serious accidents and even death. When the battery runs low, a detector will chirp to remind you that it’s time for replacement.
Check the Battery Levels
A quick and easy way to check the battery levels is by pressing the test button on your smoke detector. You can also use a broom handle or other item to push the test button for a few seconds.
Smoke alarms typically emit a small, high-pitched chirp or beep every 30–60 seconds that alerts you to a low battery warning. This is a good indicator that you should change the battery soon.
Some smoke alarms are equipped with a hush button which can be used to silence the chirp for a period of time. This can allow you to source and install a new battery without worrying about the chirp interrupting your day!
Smoke alarm batteries should be replaced at least once a year. This is especially important if you live in an area that changes clocks for daylight savings time.
Remove the Cover
Smoke alarms with a battery backup need to be replaced at least once yearly. Depending on the type of smoke detector, these can include models that require a hardwired connection from your home’s electrical system or those that use a 10-year sealed battery.
In order to replace the battery, you’ll need to remove the cover. Most units twist open, but some will have a plastic lock that you need to open with a screwdriver. See your user’s manual for specific instructions on how to open your model.
You should also check the positive and negative charges on the new battery. Make sure they match the markings on the battery compartment or in the user manual. Corrosion and dust may obstruct the battery terminals and prevent them from making contact, which can cause the unit to go off.
Remove the Mounting Bracket
When you replace the battery in a smoke alarm, there are several different steps you need to take. The first step is to remove the mounting bracket.
Most smoke detectors are ceiling-mounted, but a few will be mounted on a wall or the floor. Some of these models have a front-loading door, which makes it easy to change the battery without removing the unit from the ceiling.
Some smoke detectors have a tamper-resistant feature that prevents children from removing them. If your smoke alarm has this feature, you’ll need to deactivate it before removing the unit from its mounting bracket.
Once you’ve removed the mounting bracket from your smoke alarm, you’ll need to disconnect it from the wire harness that connects the unit to your house wiring. This is done by squeezing the locking arms on the quick connector and pulling the connector away from the bottom of your smoke detector.
Replace the Battery
A smoke alarm is a safety device that is designed to detect smoke and fire. It is important to keep it working by replacing the battery on a regular basis, at least once per year.
Smoke detectors are generally powered by a 9-volt or AA battery. These batteries should be replaced and the alarm tested regularly to ensure that they are still functioning correctly.
When smoke detectors are chirping or beeping, this is a sign that the batteries are no longer functioning properly. Replacing them immediately stops the chirping and ensures that your alarm is still working to protect your family.
The NFPA recommends changing batteries every six months, but many people find it easier to remember to do so around Daylight Savings time when you’re already changing your clocks backward and forward. If you do, your alarm will chirp to remind you of the change.
