Many Nigerians have reacted with outrage after a new plane was bought for President Bola Tinubu at a time when the economy is experiencing its worst crisis in a generation.
The purchase comes less than two weeks after thousands took to the streets across the country to protest at rising hunger and the cost of living.
Elected last year to lead Africa’s most populous country, Mr Tinubu has introduced several economic reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidies, which have contributed to high inflation, currently over 30%.
President Tinubu said the reforms were necessary to cut government spending and stimulate long-term growth.
In January, the Nigerian president announced a 60% reduction in the size of official travel delegations, including his own entourage.
However on Monday, the president departed for France using a newly acquired Airbus A330, which has become the latest addition to the presidential fleet of more than five aircraft.
The cost of the plane has not been disclosed, and nor has the reason for his trip.
'I've been sleeping under a bridge in Lagos for 30 years'
Is Nigeria on the right track after a year of Tinubu?
Should I stay or should I go? The dilemma for young Nigerians
X user @Fdmlearn said it wasn’t right that Nigerians were being told to undergo economic pain while the government was buying a new plane for the president.
“Wait so despite the Tinubu led Government telling Nigerians to bear the economic hardship and wait for a better tomorrow, they were busy paying cash for a new private Jet to add to the presidential fleet that has over 6 aircraft’s already?”.
Another X user @RealOlaudah was even more angry.
“Let's tell ourselves the truth. Tinubu's new Airbus presidential aircraft purchase for N150 billion at a time of penury, hunger, and want shows how wicked, selfish, self-indulgent, and insensitive to the plight of the average Nigerian he really is.”
However, @Timi_The_Law says he supports the president’s decision as the plane is not personal but belongs to the office of the president.
“Tinubu's decision to buy a new plane is the right one. The plane belongs to the office of the president, and future presidents will enjoy it,” he posted.
It is not known if lawmakers approved the purchase, which was not mentioned in this year’s budget.
In a statement on X, President Tinubu’s media aide Bayo Onanuga said the new plane would actually save money.
“The new plane, bought far below the market price, saves Nigeria huge maintenance and fuel costs, running into millions of dollars yearly,” the statement read in part.
The new presidential jet was recently released to the Nigerian government after it was seized by a Chinese firm, Zhangson Investment Co. Limited, which obtained a Paris court order to seize some Nigerian government assets following an investment dispute with Ogun state in south-west Nigeria.
The 15-year-old plane is said to have an elaborate configuration for VIPs and replaces the country’s 19-year-old Boeing BBJ 737-700.
Nigerian officials have previously said that the presidential fleet had a high maintenance cost due to the age of its planes.
In June, lawmakers recommended the purchase of two new aircraft for the president and his deputy, saying the old ones were not safe.
Last month, lawmakers passed a supplementary budget, which sought to raise the 2024 budget from 28.7 trillion naira ($18bn; £14bn) to 35.06 trillion naira.
It is not known if the purchase of the new plane was included in this budget.
The BBC has reached out to the Senate President and the Office of the National Security Adviser but is yet to get a response.

Piloting the F-35 can make pilots look 'as if they were 100 years old', says test pilot
“It's like an 800-pound gorilla sitting on your chest,” a pilot said at a Lockheed Martin webinar.
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 06/18/2023 - 19:25 in Military
U.S. test pilots described the challenges of flying one of the most advanced warplanes in the world, the F-35 fighter, in a recent discussion in a webinar organized by Lockheed Martin.
Tony "Brick" Wilson, an F-35 test pilot for the American defense company that previously served in the U.S. Navy, described the "g forces" - or gravitational force - he must deal with when piloting U.S. high-tech fighters.
“It's like an 800-pound gorilla sitting on your chest,” Wilson said earlier this month, The Jerusalem Post reported.
Tumblr media
Tony “Brick” Wilson.
The "dogfight" of aircraft against aircraft is like a full-body workout and "you're finished" in the end, Wilson added.
Monessa "Siren" Balzhiser, another test pilot of the company's F-35, also addressed the "g forces" in the discussion.
An average roller coaster pulls about three to four "g forces," said Balzhiser, who, before joining Lockheed, served in the U.S. Air Force.
“For a g-force, think about your weight. Therefore, if you weighed 100 pounds, pulling 9 g, you would be pulling 900 pounds of force on a person's body. Imagine so much pressure on your body. It takes a lot of training and special training," Balzhiser said.
Tumblr media
F-35
After a mission, "the pilots leave looking to be 100 years old," she added.
Later, Wilson was asked about the distance the jets could fly, according to The Jerusalem Post, and he described the different fuel levels available in each variant of the jet.
An F-35A carries 18,000 pounds of fuel, the F-35B carries about 13,000 pounds of fuel and the F-35C carries almost 20,000 pounds of fuel, the test pilot said.
Tumblr media
Monessa “Siren” Balzhiser.
Generally, on missions, pilots do not fly more than “500 to 700 nautical miles, perform a mission and then travel back” to the base, Wilson said.
In the webinar, Balzhiser said that what she values most in warplanes is “the amount of information and situational awareness that the F-35 gave me compared to the F-16”.
Tumblr media
The F-16 has three separate screens and monitors, with each screen connected to a specific sensor," she told The Jerusalem Post. "The pilots needed to merge the sensor into their brain to get the information, think about it and come up with a solution. The large graphic display of the F-35 does this, provides this situational awareness faster than I was able to do on the F-16."
F-35 test pilot Chris "Worm" Spinelli spent 24 years in the Air Force piloting fighters such as the F-22 and F-16 before joining Lockheed. He told me that F-35 technology gives pilots a whole new understanding of where they are in the air in relation to an enemy - something that determines life or death in air-to-air combat.
Tumblr media
Chris “Worm” Spinelli.
"In an air-to-air confrontation, with a fourth-generation fighter, you are shooting and then maneuvering to help survive a subsequent attack from the enemy aircraft and I can tell you personally, based on my own combat experiences in the Raptor F-22 and F-16, it was very frustrating to try to see. Honestly, you never see [the enemy aircraft] or know what's going on," Spinelli said.
Spinelli said that the F-35 generates a totally different "Air Tactics" or "mental model" image for pilots who need to know their surroundings in the air war.

So imma talk about my most favorite airliner of all time.
(Just a simple learning idk.)
The Airbus A330! My most favorite airplane of all time!
Tumblr media
Credit: Simple flying
The Airbus A330 is a medium to long haul twinjet widebody airplane made by airbus, The plane is based from the A340 but it has 2 engines instead of 4 which makes the airplane 25% fuel efficient than the comparable aircraft such as the McDonnell douglas dc-10 and Lockheed L-1011 Tristar. There are 2 variants of the aircraft. The A330-200 And A330-300,
The A330-300 entered service with its launch customer Air Inter a French domestic carrier. And the A330-200 entered service with Canada 3000 in 1998. The plane is Powered By 2, 3 types of engines.
Those are: General Electric Cf6-80e1, Pratt and Whitney PW4000-100 and Rolls-Royce Trent 700.
Their legacy continues with the A330neo .
That's so freaking cool!!!!!/gen

President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to return to Nigeria today, August 22, following a brief visit to France. His prompt return is aimed at overseeing the inauguration of Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the new Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) this Friday.   Sources within the Presidency reveal that President Tinubu regards the swearing-in of Justice Kekere-Ekun not only as a historic moment but also as a critical constitutional obligation. This underscores the significance he places on the event. Chinese Firm Seizes Nigeria’s $57million Jet in Canada as Court Rejects Immunity Claim   The National Judicial Council recently put forward Justice Kekere-Ekun as the successor to Justice Olukayode Ariwoola. Justice Ariwoola is anticipated to officially step down today, clearing the path for his successor.     Justice Kekere-Ekun, who has been a Justice of the Supreme Court since 2013, began her judicial career in the Lagos State Judiciary as a Senior Magistrate II. Her rise through the ranks saw her serve as a State High Court Judge and later as the Chairman of the Robbery and Firearms Tribunal in Ikeja from 1996 to 1999. Her judicial journey continued with an appointment to the Nigerian Courts of Appeal in 2004.   President Tinubu’s recent trip to Paris was made aboard the new Airbus A330, a modern replacement for the 19-year-old Boeing B737-700 (BBJ) acquired during President Olusegun Obasanjo's tenure.

Backlash against the presidency over the new presidential aircraft
Tumblr media
The federal government of President Bola Tinubu was criticised on Monday by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party for obtaining a new $100 million presidential plane without the National Assembly's consent. Deputy Youth Leader Timothy Osadolor and PDP Deputy National Publicity Secretary Ibrahim Abdullahi denounced the action as extremely insensitive, particularly in light of the severe economic hardships that Nigerians are currently experiencing. They contended that the government's choice to buy such an ostentatious asset speaks poorly of its priorities at a time when many people are having difficulty making ends meet. In a similar vein, Yunusa Tanko, the campaign spokeswoman for the Labour Party, voiced alarm over the President's decision to put his own opulence ahead of Nigerians' well-being in the face of persistent economic difficulties. He underlined that the purchase not only lacked empathy but also raised concerns about accountability and transparency, raising the possibility that this was a sign of more serious problems with government spending. On Monday, President Tinubu travelled to France on a working visit in the recently acquired Airbus A330. The aircraft was purchased last month and is now registered with the Nigerian Air Force. It will take the place of the older Boeing B737-700(BBJ), which has been in use since the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo. Tanko pointed out that the current state of the economy ought to have forced the administration to refrain from making such conspicuous purchases, and he attacked the government for not include the National Assembly in the approval process. He further said that the President might have made more costly purchases, underscoring his disregard for the financial circumstances of the general populace. Given the current economic situation and the general suffering in Nigeria, PDP Deputy Publicity Secretary Abdullahi characterised the jet purchase as an indication of the government's misguided objectives and insensitivity. He urged Nigerians to be watchful and demand that the government answer for what he saw to be yet another instance of its disdain for the needs of the populace. At 4:08 p.m. on Monday, the new aircraft—which has a dining area, an office, and a bedroom—took off for France from Abuja. It took a flight from France on Sunday evening and arrived in Abuja. The purchase has spurred discussion on its rationale and the transparency of its finance. It is believed that the purchase occurred after one of the Nigerian presidential jets that had been previously seized by a French court was released. The use of Service Wide Votes for this kind of purchase has also drawn criticism from former lawmakers and civil society organisations, who question the propriety of spending big money on opulent goods in the absence of clear parliamentary control. There have been demands for increased accountability and transparency in government spending, and the National Assembly has come under fire for its part in authorising such expenses.

Tumblr media

When the MD-12 program was first launched in 1990 as the MD-12X, it started out as an enhanced development of the MD-11. As the design was further refined through 1991, McDonnell Douglas had been focusing on a long-range trijet that was 35-39 feet longer than the MD-11 with a bigger wing and empennage. ⁣ ⁣ There were at least two iterations of main landing gear on the trijet version of the MD-12X, one with four wheel bogies with two under the fuselage and two under the wings not unlike the Boeing 747. Another iteration had six wheel main bogies under the wings and a four wheel centerline bogie- this version would have likely been used had the MD-12X proceeded as a trijet. ⁣ ⁣ Three engines were studies for the MD-12X trijet- the General Electric GE90 with a smaller fan than what is used on the Boeing 777, the Pratt & Whitney PW4484 derived from the PW4084 used on the 777, and finally the Rolls-Royce Trent 775, a slightly enlarged version of the Trent 700 used on the Airbus A330. ⁣ ⁣ The MD-12X trijet was designed for LAX-HKG, DFW-NRT, or SIN-CDG routes with approximately 377 passengers in a three class configuration. ⁣ ⁣ The first problem was that the MD-12X as a trijet would not have fit into the "box" at the gate that the Boeing 747-400 fits into. The second issue was the weight of the tail structure to accommodate the number 2 engine as big as the proposed engines. ⁣ ⁣ In 1992, McDonnell Douglas did a complete redesign of the MD-12 into an all new double deck four engine aircraft to address the growing issues with the trijet version of the design. "MD-12X" usually refers to the first design iteration as a trijet and "MD-12" refers to the double deck four engine second design iteration. ⁣ ⁣ #McDonnellDouglas #MD12 #MD12X #MD11 #Boeing⁣ ⁣ #instagramaviation #splendid_transport #instaaviation #aviationlovers #aviationphotography #flight ⁣ ⁣ #AvGeeksAero #AvgeekSchoolofKnowledge #AvGeekNation https://www.instagram.com/sentinelchicken/p/CX67NgClBqo/?utm_medium=tumblr
