Meet new sewing pattern <Komugi> Over shirt
A new item is just published from Waffle Patterns. Meet Over shirt <Komugi> sewing pattern, a work wear style over shirt with many functional pockets. Depending on your fabric and design choice, it will be a work shirt, uniform-like service shirt or outdoor style shirt jacket. You can make just a simple shirt as well.
<design options>
View A features a hidden button stand front opening + patch side pockets + an inside pocket. The patch side pockets are 2 types ; side opening or layered type. The cuff is no-opening design.
View B has a normal button stand + seam pocket + back bent and cuff opening.
The chest pocket design has 2 options, layer type or zipper pocket.
View A is intended as non-scratch design suitable for a work shirt especially if you are working on fragile things. View B can be made as a more outdoor-like shirt jacket with details like cuff openings or a vent. But of course you can choose and mix the options as you like!
The khaki sample in the photos features viewA, and the red plaid one is view B. The caramel brown one has mixed features.
My favourite feature is the sleeve patches. Adding compliment textures/colours is really fun! But you can sew without them, too.
Please make your creative style by mixing your favourite details.
<fabric recommendation>
The pattern is drafted for woven fabrics. Light-medium weight durable shirt fabrics are recommended. like corduroy, duck, twill, denim, linen, flannel, light wool or canvas etc.
It is not impossible to use very light drapery fabric, but those are not suitable for some details like patch pockets or vent.
Also, some very thick/stiff fabrics might not work well for details like pockets with facing. In that case, please consider using other lighter fabrics partly like the inside yoke, facing, or pocket parts.
Please choose a suitable one for your design intension.
For the caramel brown sample in the photos, I used cotton canvas. Suitable for work shirts and very easy to handle. The contrast fabric used for the sleeve patch and pocket layer is faux suede.
If you want very durable patches, leather or rubber-mixed fabrics are used for professional work apparel. But for general daily usage, like mine, design oriented choice like nice compliment colours or textures will be enough. Using leftover or old clothes is a fun choice, too.
The khaki sample is cotton ripstop. This one is also very suitable for work wear. The patch part is mixed twill.
The red plaid one is light wool backed fleece. I backed all the pieces with fleece except the folded parts like pocket openings or hem.
I bought all those fabrics from my local fabric market, but most of them are from years ago. I wanted to share where I bought them, but I actually forgot all.
I think light water repellent or windproof fabrics are nice functional options, too.
<Size>
The shirt is drafted regular fit.
I made on size bigger the red plaid sample because I wanted to wear this as a jacket. Also because the fabric gets thicker with fleece backing.
The caramel brown and khaki samples were made with just fit size.
<Other material>
If you attach the hidden button stand design, it is better to use flat and thin buttons for clean look opening.

I have had the pleasure of teaching gen Z co-workers on how to do certain processes/use certain technology and this absolutely tracks. 95% of the time, it's really not the case that they're lazy, or don't want to learn. It's mainly the case that they haven't either been taught it, or their "technology environment" hasn't involved having to use various desktop systems that many businesses use, or that even late millennials like me use. I was lucky in that I grew up messing around with, and using, a lot of the tools necessary for me to do my old job reasonably well.
- Want to make a god-awful Sonic the Hedgehog sprite-comic to impress your 10 year old class-mates because you think it makes them laugh? Get good at using Microsoft Publisher, sprite editing using Microsoft Paint, GIMP , and "surfing the web" on that new-fangled Google thing to find all the fan-forums where people are ripping sprites.
- Want to calculate the best trade routes in an online 18th century trading MMO? Want to calculate the right formula to make that Garry's mod automated rocket launching system? Excel/LibreOffice Spreadsheets. Spreadsheets for days, and you can use the formula system to MASS PRODUCE the numbers. It's like goddamn magic, (except when you mass produce the errors, and your whole model falls apart). - Want to print a giant geological map? Get used to the nightmare that is a large A0 plotter, learning about trim and bleed sizes and essential maintenance. Get ready to cry at the price of an ink cartridge. Get ready to scream as the several-foot long map is printed at an A3 size, on an A0 page, because you forgot to adjust one of the two sets of internal Windows vs printer driver settings.
Even using a desktop computer. You might have guessed I'm a massive computer nerd. It makes it so much easier to do a wide variety of jobs knowing how to use shortcuts, having a high wpm keyboard typing speed and being able to automate parts using auto-hotkeys and other programming tricks. The Gen-Z workers I had to teach often had less experience with desktop computing, and are mainly mobile-native. It's no surprise they aren't familiar with these systems which many I knew grew up with, and use as readily as breathing in some cases. But they did learn - and they did pick it up when they tried, and failed, to use them over and over again. Just as I did growing up in lower-stakes situations. Computing and IT classes, in my opinion, MASSIVELY waste the time of children as they are often (at least in the UK) viewed as non-important by schools and parents attempting to game the University selection system. This is typically picked up on by the kids as well, who then use them as an excuse to mess around (Though sometimes learning key skills in the process, such as running N64 emulators!). While I did learn to use practical computer skills, such as Microsoft Office, during my early education, most of what I know is self taught. I enjoyed it - and made practical use of it. What happens to the people who didn't? Gen-Z. And then we pillory them for it. Computing should be given the respect it deserves in the curriculum - both for the functional, practical, elements and for the sheer, utter, magic of the machine itself.
seriously, though. i work in higher education, and part of my job is students sending me transcripts. you'd think the ones who have the least idea how to actually do that would be the older ones, and while sure, they definitely struggle with it, i see it most with the younger students. the teens to early 20s crowd.
very, astonishingly often, they don't know how to work with .pdf documents. i get garbage phone screenshots, sometimes inserted into an excel or word file for who knows what reason, but most often it's just a raw .jpg or other image file.
they definitely either don't know how to use a scanner, don't have access to one, or don't even know where they might go for that (staples and other office supply stores sometimes still have these services, but public libraries always have your back, kids.) so when they have a paper transcript and need to send me a copy electronically, it's just terrible photos at bad angles full of thumbs and text-obscuring shadows.
mind bogglingly frequently, i get cell phone photos of computer screens. they don't know how to take a screenshot on a computer. they don't know the function of the Print Screen button on the keyboard. they don't know how to right click a web page, hit "print", and choose "save as PDF" to produce a full and unbroken capture of the entirety of a webpage.
sometimes they'll just copy the text of a transcript and paste it right into the message of an email. that's if they figure out the difference between the body text portion of the email and the subject line, because quite frankly they often don't.
these are people who in most cases have done at least some college work already, but they have absolutely no clue how to utilize the attachment function in an email, and for some reason they don't consider they could google very quickly for instructions or even videos.
i am not taking a shit on gen z/gen alpha here, i'm really not.
what i am is aghast that they've been so massively failed on so many levels. the education system assumed they were "native" to technology and needed to be taught nothing. their parents assumed the same, or assumed the schools would teach them, or don't know how themselves and are too intimidated to figure it out and teach their kids these skills at home.
they spend hours a day on instagram and tiktok and youtube and etc, so they surely know (this is ridiculous to assume!!!) how to draft a formal email and format the text and what part goes where and what all those damn little symbols means, right? SURELY they're already familiar with every file type under the sun and know how to make use of whatever's salient in a pinch, right???
THEY MUST CERTAINLY know, innately, as one knows how to inhale, how to type in business formatting and formal communication style, how to present themselves in a way that gets them taken seriously by formal institutions, how to appear and be competent in basic/standard digital skills. SURELY. Of course. RIGHT!!!!
it's MADDENING, it's insane, and it's frustrating from the receiving end, but even more frustrating knowing they're stumbling blind out there in the digital spaces of grown-up matters, being dismissed, being considered less intelligent, being talked down to, because every adult and system responsible for them just
ASSUMED they should "just know" or "just figure out" these important things no one ever bothered to teach them, or half the time even introduce the concepts of before asking them to do it, on the spot, with high educational or professional stakes.
kids shouldn't have to supplement their own education like this and get sneered and scoffed at if they don't.

fuck it I’ll post my thoughts and progress here. Never done a proper cosplay before but after I made Tri for funsies at the beginning of October I was like haha what if….? Also bc I couldn’t think of a costume for Halloween, despite not currently having plans for Halloween >.>
I’ve gotten a lot done just figured I should Log It somewhere that isn’t just my friend’s dms lol
Couldn’t be assed to make a white dress so I bought one from. Idr where. Had briefly considered buying Zelda’s vest-like thing from this like modesty clothing site called Veiled I think? It seemed pretty quality but I wasn’t sure if I could style it right or if it was a good color or feel, and it was outside my budget
Couldn’t figure out what to Call her vest thing to even find patterns to buy, but I ended up getting one on Etsy for a “long cardigan” that I figured I could just make Longer
Unfortttttunately, the A0 pattern file was locked, so I couldn’t try to get it printed at a print shop for like blueprints size, but the person who called me said they can’t print This big a size anyway. So I had to deal with taping together a bunch of regular printer paper. Wish I’d have thought to use that guillotine paper cutter thing at work…
For the cape I wasn’t sure what kind of fabric I’d want to make it out of. Partly bc I’m Quite New to sewing lol. Even though Zelda’s wearing it, it’s Link’s cape, so I don’t imagine it’s Super fancy, and it should be lightweight. Wool could’ve been cool but that is Very Much out of my price range lmao
Found a nice free (if you email them… kinda annoying but could be worse) pattern online for a hooded cape that I think will work p well. So with that, I decided to make it out of fleece. It’ll double as a nice comfy cozy thing to wear around the house for fun too hehe
Then I was off to the fabric store weeeeee. I was trying to decide for a while between some pink knit fabrics (p-something? It seemed sturdier than Jersey knit and wouldn’t look too cheap) bc her vest isn’t quiiite pink but it’s not full on purple either, and none of the purple fabrics looked close
but thennn I found this clearance/last chance cotton in the perfect color :3 bonus of being able to put off learning to see non-woven fabrics lol. Got some muslin fabric too bc I figured I’d need it to make a practice version of the vest (greatly paid off!)
This isn’t how much I bought btw these are just the bolts I was lugging around while deciding and then waiting for the cutting counter. They were quite heavy…
Oh, also decided (we’ll see if I regret this later when I actually get to the Making It part) to make the cape detail basically like a fleece appliqué. There are probably better and easier ways to do it but i don’t really know about them !
Jeez ok this is getting long and this is just the “intro” djshdjfjd
#real pepper crafting hours#cosplay log#Idr know how I want to tag it for my own reference later lol#up next: bitching about sewing patterns!

#1101 Why do we use A4 as a paper size?
Why do we use A4 as a paper size? We use A4 because it is a ratio of A0, which is 1 square meter of paper. The A system of paper was invented in Germany and adopted by almost all of the countries in the world in 1975. The only countries that don’t use it as the official document size for most government functions are the USA and Canada. Paper has existed since it was invented in China in roughly 100 AD. The invention is attributed to a court official called Cai Lun, but fragments of paper that predate him have been discovered, so it must have been invented earlier. Before the invention of paper, most countries use papyrus, vellum, parchment, or other types of surface. China was the first country to make a paper from the fibers of plants. They soaked and pounded rags and plants until they could take the mat of fibers and dry them, producing rudimentary paper. Paper was a world changing invention and slowly spread around the world. There were gradual improvements in how it was made but there were no official sizes. Paper was cut as big or as small as the person buying it needed. Books were written by hand so there was no need to have a standard paper size that could fit into a machine, as we do today. Old books, like old bibles, tend to be a variety of sizes. When the printing press was invented, it did standardize paper in some ways, but not others. A printer was likely to print all of one print run of books on paper that was roughly the same size, but different printers might use different sized paper. As printing became more common and mass-produced paper became possible, the price of books dropped and more people learned to read. Once this happened, books were generally printed on similar sized paper, but it was still not exactly the same. The first person to come up with the idea for standardized paper was a German physicist called Georg Lichtenberg in 1786. He never introduced the system, but he came up with the idea for it. He proposed that paper should be sized on an aspect ratio of the square root of 2. The easiest way to think about this is that each size of paper can be cut into two pieces of the next size down. For example, A3 can be perfectly cut into two pieces of A4. Lichtenberg wrote this idea in an essay, but it was never published during his lifetime. He wrote many essays and kept numerous notebooks that he called scrapbooks. These were all published after his death by his sons. The idea for standardizing paper was taken up again by a German engineer and mathematician called Walter Porstmann and a Nobel prize winning chemist called Wilhelm Ostwald in 1922. Portsmann worked for the Standards Committee of German Industry, which became the German Institute of Standardization. One of the things Porstmann was involved with was the standardization of paper sizes. The system he came up with was called the DIN system. DIN stands for Deutsches Institut für Normung, which means “German Institute of Standardization”. The DIN system was simple and it was metric. It caught on and over the next fifty years it gradually spread around the world, becoming the accepted size of paper. In 1975, the International Organization for Standardization decide that the German system would be the International system and they renamed it ISO. (Incidentally, ISO doesn’t stand for International Organization for Standardization. It is taken from the Greek word isos, which means equal.) So, how does the ISO paper system work? Well, there are 3 different systems that use a different starting size, but then they all progress the same way. They all go back to the original idea thought up by Lichtenberg. The A series came first. A0 is the first one and it is a rectangle with an area of 1m2. It has a width of 841 mm and a height of 1189 mm. The next size is A1, which is half the width of AO. 2 A1 papers will fit side by side inside the A0 area. The width of A1 is 594 mm, but the length is 841 mm. The length of each subsequent size is the width of the previous size. This continues all the way down to A10, which is the smallest. If you tried and were very patient, you could fit 2048 A10 pages in the area of one A0 page. The same works for the B sizes and the C sizes, although they start with a different area. The size of B0 is 1.414 m2 and the size of C0 is 1.189 m2. The same properties apply, though, because the width of the previous size is always the length of the next size and you can always fit two of the next size in the area of the previous size. This makes it very easy to scale and very simple to use. And this is what I learned today. I guess that's one way to look at it? In actuality, it is defined like this:
A0 is the size which is 1 square meter and has a ratio of 1 to square root of 2 (1:1.412592).
The next smaller size is half of the previous one. Ie halving A0 yields two sheets of A1. Halving those yields sheets of size A2, etc.
A4 is the standard "printer" paper size. The size someone would use for an official letter. It is 21 cm x 29.7 cm. (8.2 x 11.6 inch).
A5 is like a flash card.
Found on mastodon, must share!

Meet new sewing pattern <Kanoko> Tote bag set
Meet the new item from Waffle Patterns Tote bag set <Kanoko> sewing pattern. This is a fun and functional tote bag 3 sisters set with many pockets. All sizes are perfect for daily use. Please make your favourite size with your favourite fabric. Those can be made with a relatively small amount of fabric, so, it is also nice to use your leftover fabrics from your stash.
<design options>
3 sizes are available; L - grocery size, M - commuter size, and S - accessory size. The grocery size is quite large and enough for supermarket or fabric shopping. The commuter size is suitable for daily use and the size for about 10″ iPad and other small things like a make-up pouch, wallet, or snacks. The accessory size is a very cute mini size for small staffs like a lip balm or candy.
L and M are basically the same design. Both have large 3D-shaped pockets on the front, side pockets with pleats, and a small pocket on the back. There are 2 kinds of functional inside pockets, too. There are 2 options for the opening. The L size sample shows magnet fastener + strap + side release buckle opening. The M sample features a zipper opening. You can add a shoulder strap on M size.
S size has also front/back and side pockets and a very small inside pocket. The closure is a magnet/snap fastener and an inside closure with tape+button.
<fabric recommendation>
The pattern is drafted for woven fabrics. Mid-heavy weight woven durable fabrics are suitable. like duck, twill, denim, linen, canvas or décor weight fabric etc. I think waxed fabrics or water repellent outdoor fabrics are great options, too. For the lining, plain cotton or linen will be a good option.
Depending on your fabric and your design intention, please consider using additional interfacing on the bag panels for adding extra strength or body.
Here are my sample’s materials.
The shell fabric of smoky pink samples is mixed twill. I wanted to add body on M size, so I used woven mid weight interfacing on bag panels. For L size, I only use interfacing on the facing parts to keep it light weight. I also made a sample of M size with mid weight denim + fusible fleece combo for stable shape.
The red and yellow plaid set are made with wool coating. Those are all leftover of my winter projects. I used woven interfacing on the panels on the M size. The lining is plain cotton.
Again, please consider the material combination depending on your fabric and design intention.
<other materials>
The samples are using 30mm~40mm webbing for the handles and straps. If you cannot find perfect colour or width, making those with contrast fabrics are the option.
I used the shoulder strap from ready made bags, but you can make them by yourself, too.
For additional strength, I added the plastic plates on the base of M and S size. The special materials for the bag base are sold at notion stores, but I used plastic plate cutting from old clear files and ice cream package.
Please choose suitable materials/parts for your design and shell fabrics. I strongly recommend checking actual material samples as much as possible and experimenting your fabrics before start the project.
<other>
For smoky pink samples, I used twill tape on the pocket opening of side and back pockets for strengthen and as a design accent. It is also good option if your fabric is too stiff or thick.
********************* The sewing pattern includes 17 pages of instructions and all the sewing processes are described with detailed illustrations. The pattern files are available for both home printers (A4 or US letter) and copyshop(A0/A1 format).

The A0 Printer
In the world of printing, the A0 printer is a term that is used to describe a large format printer capable of printing media up to 841mm wide and any length, making it ideal for printing large-scale graphics, posters, and signage. But have you ever wondered how the A0 printer came to be? In this article, we will explore the history of the A0 printer and how it has evolved over the years.
The origins of the A0 printer can be traced back to the early days of printing technology. In the late 19th century, the invention of the offset printing press revolutionised the way that printing was done. This new printing technology allowed for larger sheets of paper to be printed at once, and it paved the way for the development of the first large-format printing presses.
As printing technology continued to evolve in the 20th century, the need for even larger printing capabilities grew. In the 1960s, the first electrostatic large format printer was developed by Xerox Corporation. This printer was capable of printing on paper up to 36 inches wide, and it was primarily used for printing engineering drawings and architectural plans.
By the 1970s, advances in printing technology had led to the development of the first inkjet printers. These printers used small nozzles to spray tiny droplets of ink onto the printing surface, allowing for much higher-resolution printing than was previously possible. However, early inkjet printers were still limited in their size capabilities.
In the 1980s, the first large-format inkjet printers were developed. These printers were capable of printing on paper up to 1 meter wide, and they quickly gained popularity in the advertising and signage industries. However, they were still limited in their capabilities, as they were often slow and expensive to operate.
It wasn't until the 1990s that the first A0 printer was developed. This printer was capable of printing on media up to 841mm wide and any length, making it the largest format printer available at the time. The development of the A0 printer was a game-changer for the printing industry, as it allowed for the creation of large-scale graphics, posters, and signage with much greater ease and speed than was previously possible.
Over the years, A0 printers have continued to evolve and improve in both their speed and print quality. Today, A0 printers are capable of printing at incredibly high resolutions and speeds, making them an essential tool for many businesses and industries.
One of the main advantages of A0 printers is their versatility. They can be used to print a wide range of media, including paper, vinyl, canvas, and more. This makes them ideal for a variety of applications, from large-scale advertising displays to fine art reproductions.
Another advantage of A0 printers is their cost-effectiveness. Whichever size of roll you do select from this range, you can expect to receive a pleasingly heavyweight, highly calendared inkjet tracing paper that offers good archival qualities, thanks to its manufacture from chlorine-free wood pulp.

All the while, the tracing paper itself will be up to the task.
