A:Xus - Callin’ U (Mood II Swing Dub) [1999]

A few days ago I posted a track by Wild Planet that appeared in the Rockstar San Diego game, Smuggler’s Run 2. Well this song has the honour of appearing in the first game in that series, as well as said game’s official soundtrack mix CD. It’s a fun, catchy house tune that goes surprisingly well with the chaos of these games. Hope you enjoy!

The Guidance Collection by A:xus 2000 Deep House

Leave it to Toronto's A:xus, better known as Abacus, to be the one to deliver the most stunning label sampler mix of Chicago's best deep house label at the time, Guidance Recordings. You'd think a Windy City native, someone who'd grown up with and directly experienced its house culture since the mid-80s, and who literally lived with it and breathed it and had their ears tuned to it every day of their life, would naturally be the best option to put together something truly spectacular and transcendent, but the fact of the matter is that this was done by a guy who lived north of the border.

And it's not even a Guidance release. No, this rare hour's worth of vibed-out poolside magic was merely just included as a freebie CD with the July 2000 issue of the now-defunct UK dance magazine, Muzik. Never know what you're gonna get with those freebies; sometimes they're freebies for a reason, and other times they turn out to be fucking priceless. And this mix, of course, is in that latter category. Kind of amazing how it only got released in the UK, too, considering how much Guidance junkies in the US would've adored it.

Super chill house vibes throughout the entirety of this one, with a poetic palate cleanser in the middle, courtesy of Jazzanova and Ursula Rucker.

When I Fall in Love (Stryke's Blue Vocal Mix) A:xus When I Fall Remix Project (2000)

I originally heard a different remix to this song via the video game Midnight Club II (awesome soundtrack btw). So I was looking for that mix when I came across this mix. The "Stryke's Acid Dub Techsture" mix was an acid house version with minimal vocals. Stryke's Blue Vocal Mix is a classy, cool little house version with great vocals. The lyrics are a play on Doris Day's "When I Fall in Love" (1952). And was covered by Nat King Cole in 1957. The "original" A:xus version was released in 1998 and titled "Abacus (When I Fall in Love)". This remix was released in 2000.

"In a restless world like this is, love has ended before it's begun. So when I fall in love, it will be forever. Or I'll never, ever fall in love. When I give my heart, it will be completely. Or I'll never, ever give my heart."

Simple and powerful lyrics. And it's just repeated throughout the 8 minutes with minor changes over a loungy house beat with some nice synths and bass.
