LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
April 18, 2024
HEATHER COX RICHARDSON
APR 19, 2024
I will not spend the rest of 2024 focusing on Trump and the chaos in the Republican Party, but today it has been impossible to look away.
In Trump’s election interference trial in Manhattan, Judge Juan Merchan this morning dismissed one of the selected jurors after she expressed concern for her anonymity and thus for her safety. All of the reporters in the courtroom have shared so much information about the jurors that they seemed at risk of being identified, but Fox News Channel host Jesse Watters not only ran a video segment about a juror, he suggested she was “concerning.” Trump shared the video on social media.
The juror told the judge that so much information about her had become public that her friends and family had begun to ask her if she was one of the jurors. Legal analyst Joyce White Vance noted jurors’ fear for their safety was a concern normally seen only “in a case involving violent organized crime.”
Nonetheless, by the end of the day, twelve people had been chosen to serve as jurors. Tomorrow the process will continue in order to find six alternate jurors.
It is a courtesy for the two sides at a trial to share with each other the names of their next witnesses so the other team can prepare for them. Today the prosecution declined to provide the names of their first three witnesses to the defense lawyers out of concern that Trump would broadcast them on social media. “Mr. Trump has been tweeting about the witnesses. We’re not telling them who the witnesses are,” prosecutor Joshua Steinglass said.
Merchan said he “can’t blame them.” Trump’s defense attorney Todd Blanche offered to "commit to the court and the [prosecution] that President Trump will not [post] about any witness" on social media. "I don't think you can make that representation," Merchan said, in a recognition that Trump cannot be trusted, even by his own lawyers.
An article in the New York Times today confirmed that the trial will give Trump plenty of publicity, but not the kind that he prefers. Lawyer Norman L. Eisen walked through questions about what a prison sentence for Trump could look like.
Trump’s popular image is taking a hit in other ways, as well. Zac Anderson and Erin Mansfield of USA Today reported that Trump is funneling money from his campaign fundraising directly into his businesses. According to a new report filed with the Federal Election Commission, in February and March the campaign wrote checks totaling $411,287 to Mar-a-Lago and in March a check for $62,337 to Trump National Doral Miami.
Experts say it is legal for candidates to pay their own businesses for services used by the campaign so long as they pay fair market value. At the same time, they note that since Trump appears to be desperate for money, “it looks bad.”
Astonishingly, Trump’s trial was not the biggest domestic story today. Republicans in Congress were in chaos as members of the extremist Freedom Caucus worked to derail the national security supplemental bills that House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has introduced in place of the Senate bill, although they track that bill closely.
The House Rules Committee spent the day debating the foreign aid package, which appropriates aid for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan separately. The Israel bill also contains $9.1 billion in humanitarian aid for Gaza and other countries. A fourth bill focuses on forcing the Chinese owners of TikTok to sell the company, as well as on imposing sanctions on Russia and Iran.
At stake in the House Rules Committee was Johnson’s plan to allow the House to debate and vote on each measure separately, and then recombine them all into a single measure if they all pass. This would allow extremist Republicans to vote against aid to Ukraine, while still tying the pieces all together to send to the Senate. As Robert Jimison outlined in the New York Times, this complicated plan meant that the Rules Committee vote to allow such a maneuver was crucial to the bill’s passage.
The extremist House Republicans were adamantly opposed to the plan because of their staunch opposition to aid for Ukraine. They wrote in a memo on Wednesday: “This tactic allows Johnson to pass priorities favored by President Biden, the swamp and the Ukraine war machine with a supermajority of House members, leaving conservatives out to dry.”
Extremists Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) and Thomas Massie (R-KY) vowed to throw House speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) out of the speakership, but Democrats Tom Suozzi of New York and Jared Moskowitz of Florida have said they would vote to keep him in his seat, thereby defanging the attack on his leadership.
So the extremists instead tried to load the measures up with amendments prohibiting funds from being used for abortion, removing humanitarian aid for Gaza, opposing a two-state solution to the Hamas-Israel war, calling for a wall at the southern border of the U.S., defunding the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and so on.
Greene was especially active in opposition to aid to Ukraine. She tried to amend the bill to direct the president to withdraw the U.S. from NATO and demanded that any members of Congress voting for aid to Ukraine be conscripted into the Ukraine army as well as have their salaries taken to offset funding. She wanted to stop funding until Ukraine “turns over all information related to Hunter Biden and Burisma,” and to require Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky to resign. More curiously, she suggested amending the Ukraine bill so that funding would require “restrictions on ethnic minorities’, including Hungarians in Transcarpathia, right to use their native languages in schools are lifted.” This language echoes a very specific piece of Russian propaganda.
Finally, Moskowitz proposed “that Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene…should be appointed as Vladimir Putin’s Special Envoy to the United States Congress.”
Many congress members have left Washington, D.C., since Friday was to be the first day of a planned recess. This meant the partisan majority on the floor fluctuated. Olivia Beavers of Politico reported that that instability made Freedom Caucus members nervous enough to put together a Floor Action Response Team (FART—I am not making this up) to make sure other Republicans didn’t limit the power of the extremists when they were off the floor.
The name of their response team seems likely to be their way to signal their disrespect for the entire Congress. Their fellow Republicans are returning the heat. Today Mike Turner (R-OH) referred to the extremists as the Bully Caucus on MSNBC and said, “We need to get back to professionalism, we need to get back to governing, we need to get back to legislating.” Derrick Van Orden (R-WI) told Juliegrace Brufke of Axios: "The vast majority of the Republican Party in the House of Representatives...are sick and tired of having people who...constantly blackmail the speaker of the House.”
Another Republican representative, Jake LaTurner of Kansas, announced today he will not run for reelection. He joins more than 20 other Republican representatives heading for the exits.
After all the drama, the House Rules Committee voted 6–3 tonight to advance the foreign aid package to the House floor. Three Republicans voted nay. While it is customary for the opposition party to vote against advancing bills out of the committee, the Democrats broke with tradition and voted in favor.

ooooh, sounds like a fun day! I'll leave you to it......but off the top of your head:
https://imgflip.com/i/8wizl9
I'll give you one too, promise 😉
-♡♡
I'M DYING AT THIS 💀💀💀
Okay, okay, okay. So my movie taste is a little bit everywhere - so I'm not sure what you like. Let me give you a couple with a brief summary to give you a sense of what I like.
Suck: 2009 (M)
A struggling troup of musicians travel around Canada and USA. It's only when the bassist of the group is turned into a vampire that they finally meet success. Now they have to deal with the consequences of a rise in fame: hunters, groupies, and an insatiable hunger that they need to satisfy to keep up their success. Dark comedy, gore, cameos from musicians, musical.
I don't know why I like this movie, but I do. I think it's the vampires, the miniature models, the muso references, the makeup, and the gore. Could also be Alice Cooper and Iggy Pop.
Calamity Jane: 1955 (PG)
A firecracker gunslinger with a boisterous attitude seeks out actress Adelaide Adams to bring back to her town of Deadwood to win a bet. She finds a friend in the actress, and finds love along the way. Musical, wild west, angst, comedy, romance.
This was my bisexual awakening. This movie has a special place in my heart. I love Doris Day and Allyn Ann McLerie. Howard Keel's voice is also just 🫠. Costumes 👌👌👌. A man in drag singing 🤌.
Overboard: 1987 (PG)
A spoilt heiress decides to snub a single father, widower carpenter she hired after being "dissatisfied" with his services. She cheats him out of his wage, and he is left to fend for himself with little funds to back him up. When that heiress falls overboard and is diagnosed with amnesia, the carpenter decides to get her back and claim to be her husband: working her to the bone as his "wife" to have her earn back the wage she'd lost him. Comedy, romance, Goldie Hawn, Kurt Russell.
THIS IS MY ULTIMATE COMFORT MOVIE. I will watch this movie on repeat. The chemistry between Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell is absolutely gorgeous - and it's before they ended up getting married in real life. I just AAAAAAAAAAA at this movie. It has all of my favourite tropes, and I love it. Amnesia, enemies to lovers, payback, revenge, and it also is so validating for the often unseen role of being the "at home" parent.
Van Helsing: 2004 (M)
The legendary monster hunter travels to Transylvania to aid in the hunt of the vampire responsible for destroying the town. When the princess of an ancient Romani family becomes the vampire's target, he stops at nothing to end her torment. Hugh Jackman, Kate Beckinsale, David Wenham, Richard Roxburgh. Horror themes, action, romance, monsters.
This movie copped a lot of hate when it was released, but it's another one of my comfort films. It's got the Aussie Hugh in it, and a vampire masquerade dance scene that I just AAAAAAAAAA each time. I love it. It's romance, and I am a sucker for monsters.
Kill Bill: 1 & 2 (R+)
A woman betrayed seeks out her revenge on those who attempted to kill her on her wedding day. Blood, gore, angst, dark, violence, a beautiful soundtrack, multilingual, Uma Thurman, Lucy Liu, fighting.
Another comfort movie. I love this entire plot so much. Tarantino has a few good ones, but this one, Dusk Till Dawn and Planet Terror are my favourites. I love the switch up to Japanese in there.
I am very much enjoying Day 1 of my holiday. Dreamworld is the destination today. Last time I was here was during the night festivals and I may have gotten a little wild and did 'the nutbush' (Australian dance to Tina Turner) with a bunch of children. Reminded me of the good ol' days of being an entertainer 💀. I should do a rollercoaster or a slide POV for you when I'm there 🖤.
Hoping the movies off the top of my head/heart serve you well, my beautiful ♡♡ Anon. I need some more of your gorgeous recs for when I get back home again in 2 weeks.

How to Seal and Insulate Ductwork DIY Skills
Many home owners in the USA wonder how crucial it is to seal and insulate their air ducts. According to the Department of Energy, on average, 30% of cooled or heated air is lost through leaky ductways. Therefore, it becomes more than necessary to have them sealed and insulated if you are looking for a home warranty in the USA. Let’s understand how to seal and insulate your air ducts DIY.
How Do I Seal Air Ducts?
First off, you need to inspect the air ducts for leaks. According to an assessment, the home energy score guidelines mandate duct sealing to reduce air loss from ducts to 3% of total flow. Sealing tightly helps homeowners improve their energy score by reducing air loss.
Another thing to remember is having personal safety when sealing these ducts. Use caution in attic or basement spaces, and call a contractor if unsealed ducts are difficult to access or if mold, leaks, or other issues are found.
Inspect ducts for major holes due to rust or damage.
Ensure ducts, seams, and joints are in good condition.
Detect leaks by constantly blowing the HVAC system.
Mark areas needing sealing with a grease pencil.
Seal seams and joints, along with obvious leaks.
Use duct mastic, tube mastic, or foil-backed mastic tape for sealing.
Both Mastic and Mastic Tape are sufficient for duct sealing under the Home Energy Score assessment guidelines.
Seal ducts in unfinished basements to reduce winter coldness. Consider adding wall insulation for added improvements before listing your home for sale. Elite Home Warranty, a premium home warranty company in the USA, can help you with the coverage of installation and maintenance of the newly installed ducts.
How Do I Install The Ducts?
Alright, once the ducts are sealed properly, it’s time to snug them up with some insulation. This can further reduce the loss of heat through the ducts as well as improve the overall efficiency of your HVAC system.
Choose cost-effective, heat-resistant, and R-6-rated fiberglass bats.
Gather safety goggles and a breathing mask.
Cut rolled insulation to the correct size and secure it around ducts.
Cut insulation snugly around the duct, not compressed.
Secure the insulation with foil tape across the seam.
Seal the entire seam with foil tape.
Repeat until all exposed ducts are covered.
Double-check for secure sealing of every seam and joint to prevent moisture from penetrating and condensing.
Some Additional Tips
Unfinished basements and garages can increase heating bills and lower energy scores by up to 30%. Remove or seal these vents permanently.
Upgrade your HVAC units to improve efficiency by up to 35%. Older models are less energy efficient.
Consult the manufacturer for recommended maintenance schedules and service professionals.
Keep units clean and clear of debris, leaves, and dust, and have ducts cleaned every 3-5 years.
Wrapping Up
A properly maintained HVAC system with efficient air ducts can help you in the long run and provide a better home selling rate after inspection. Therefore, get them done today. For installation and maintenance coverages along with a home warranty in the USA, visit Elite Home Warranty!

Upcoding in Medical Billing: What Patients and Providers Need to Know
In the ever-evolving landscape of healthcare, medical billing plays a crucial role in ensuring that healthcare providers are reimbursed for their services. However, unethical practices like upcoding—the deliberate or accidental use of higher-level service codes in billing to secure higher reimbursements—pose a significant risk to both patients and providers. Understanding upcoding is essential for maintaining compliance, preventing fraud, and safeguarding the integrity of the healthcare system.
This comprehensive guide will shed light on what upcoding is, its consequences, and the steps that both patients and providers can take to avoid falling victim to or committing such fraudulent activity.
What is Upcoding in Medical Billing?
Upcoding occurs when healthcare providers or billing specialists use a CPT (Current Procedural Terminology) code that reflects a higher level of care or a more complex procedure than was actually provided. This could happen in outpatient, inpatient, or even telehealth settings. For instance, a simple office visit might be billed as a complex consultation, or a routine test may be coded as a more expensive diagnostic exam.
While upcoding is sometimes unintentional due to human error or miscommunication, when done deliberately, it is considered fraud under the False Claims Act (FCA) and can lead to severe penalties.
Why Does Upcoding Happen?
There are various reasons for upcoding in the medical field, including:
Financial Gain: Upcoding leads to higher reimbursements from insurance companies, Medicare, or Medicaid. This financial incentive often tempts dishonest providers to engage in this practice.
Errors in Documentation: In some cases, upcoding happens unintentionally due to inaccurate documentation or a misunderstanding of the billing codes.
Pressure from Billing Companies: In certain situations, third-party medical billing companies may pressure providers to upcode in order to increase revenue, which boosts their commissions.
Lack of Proper Training: Improper coding can also result from insufficient training for billing and coding specialists who may not fully understand the complexities of the ICD-10 or CPT coding systems.
The Impact of Upcoding on Patients
Upcoding has a far-reaching impact that extends beyond the healthcare providers. Patients can face significant repercussions, including:
Increased Healthcare Costs When upcoding occurs, the patient’s insurance company or government program is billed for services that were not actually provided or were exaggerated in complexity. This can result in higher co-pays, deductibles, and premiums for patients. Over time, these unjustified expenses can strain patients financially.
Denial of Future Coverage Upcoding can sometimes flag a patient’s medical record as having received more complex or serious care than they actually did. This can make it more difficult for patients to obtain life insurance, long-term care insurance, or even health insurance in the future, as their medical history appears more severe.
Exposure to Unnecessary Treatments Patients who are victims of upcoding might also be exposed to unnecessary follow-up tests or procedures. These can lead to more physical and emotional stress, not to mention additional financial burdens.
The Impact of Upcoding on Providers
Healthcare providers, both individual practitioners and large organizations, can face severe consequences if caught upcoding.
Deliberate upcoding is a violation of the False Claims Act. If a provider is found guilty of submitting false claims, they may be subject to substantial fines, criminal charges, and even imprisonment. Providers may also lose their license to practice and face exclusion from federal healthcare programs like Medicare.
In the competitive field of healthcare, reputation is everything. Being accused of or found guilty of upcoding can damage a provider’s credibility and trustworthiness. Patients may choose to leave the practice, and it can become harder to attract new ones, resulting in a significant loss of business.
Beyond the legal fines, providers who engage in upcoding may be required to return overpayments and compensate for any damages caused. In some cases, practices have had to close down entirely due to the financial strain caused by upcoding penalties.
How to Prevent Upcoding: Best Practices for Providers
Providers must take proactive steps to ensure that they avoid upcoding and maintain the highest levels of compliance and ethics in medical billing.
Invest in Proper Training: Ensure that all billing and coding staff are thoroughly trained in the ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS Level II codes. Continuous education and refresher courses should be mandatory to keep staff updated on the latest coding changes and regulatory guidelines.
Conduct Regular Audits: Conducting internal audits of billing practices helps to identify potential upcoding before it escalates into a legal issue. Hiring third-party auditors can also provide an unbiased review of your billing procedures.
Improve Documentation Practices: Ensuring accurate and complete documentation of the patient encounter is crucial. Medical records should precisely reflect the care provided. Implementing Electronic Health Records (EHR) can help streamline and enhance the accuracy of medical documentation.
Use Compliance Programs: Create and enforce a strict compliance program that addresses upcoding and other potential fraudulent practices. Compliance programs should include policies, training sessions, and monitoring systems to prevent and detect upcoding.
Conclusion: The Importance of Awareness and Ethical Practices
Upcoding in medical billing is a serious issue that affects both patients and providers. By fostering a culture of transparency, accuracy, and ethical billing practices, providers can avoid the severe consequences of upcoding. At the same time, patients can take proactive steps to ensure they aren’t being overcharged for services they didn’t receive.
Awareness and prevention are key to addressing this fraudulent practice. By working together, both sides can help safeguard the integrity of the healthcare system and ensure that medical billing is fair and accurate.
Frequently Asked Questions(FAQ's)
1. What is upcoding in medical billing?
Upcoding is the practice of using a medical billing code that represents a higher level of service or more complex procedure than what was actually provided. This can lead to higher reimbursements for the provider and is considered fraudulent when done intentionally.
2. How does upcoding affect patients?
Upcoding can lead to increased healthcare costs for patients, as their insurance may be billed for more expensive services. It can also result in higher co-pays, deductibles, or even future insurance denials based on an inflated medical history.
3. What are the legal consequences of upcoding for providers?
Providers caught upcoding may face severe penalties, including fines, exclusion from Medicare or Medicaid programs, criminal charges, and even imprisonment. The practice is considered fraud under the False Claims Act.
4. How can patients protect themselves from upcoding?
Patients can protect themselves by reviewing itemized medical bills carefully, questioning any unfamiliar charges, and reporting suspicious activity to their insurance provider or Medicare/Medicaid if they suspect fraudulent billing.
5. What can healthcare providers do to avoid upcoding?
Healthcare providers can prevent upcoding by investing in proper training for their billing and coding staff, conducting regular audits, improving documentation practices, and implementing a strict compliance program to detect and prevent billing errors.

The patience needed for working for theists in the USA via /r/atheism
The patience needed for working for theists in the USA Atheist gay couple in their 30s. My boyfriend (I'll say Tim) just worked a small job the other day at an older couple's house (late 60s to early 70s). The man talked to him about religion, asking where he went to church. Tim replied that he went to catholic school as a kid, but doesn't go to services anymore (alluding he still believes with careful words). The man then suggests Tim should go to his church, (paraphrasing here)'it's soo great! They had to switch churches a few years ago, because gay marriage was legalized. Their old church became okay with "that sort of thing"'. Tim tells them he lives too far away, but thanks for the offer. Later, Tim gives them the bill. They tip him $100/40%! It sucks that this tip was obviously contingent on a false sense of shared faith, rather than his stellar and professional work. When Tim told me this summary laughing over the phone, he joked that I would've yelled at and given them a heart attack. I told him, "I would not have raised my voice, but they wouldn't want me in their house again lol!". Tim is his own small business; and they are repeat customers, so please don't bitch about him not calling the old man out lol. Where we live(red state), I'd be out of business so fast! He is so good at dealing with theists and can have a laugh about it with those living in reality. I thank the randomness of the universe for this man that keeps me sane! 9 years next month, and I hope you all find someone so awesome. You deserve it! ❤ Submitted September 17, 2023 at 06:14AM by ThisIsCodyHere (From Reddit https://ift.tt/PXlWZnm)

LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
February 22, 2023
Heather Cox Richardson
Last week’s court filing in the Dominion Voting Systems case proved that Fox News Channel personalities knew full well that Joe Biden had won the 2020 presidential election. They pushed Trump’s Big Lie of voter fraud anyway, afraid they would lose viewers to right-wing networks that were willing to parrot that lie.
Since the 1980s, Republicans have relied on a false narrative to win voters. To get rid of the active government put in place after 1933 to put guardrails around the unfettered capitalism that had led to the Depression, they argued that government regulation, the social safety net, civil rights, and investment in infrastructure were socialism and were undermining traditional America.
Their argument was that business regulation gave the government control over the way a man ran his business, and that taxes to support government bureaucracy, social services, and public investments redistributed wealth from white men to minorities and women. Real Americans, they suggested, must be willing to defend themselves and the country against the “socialist” national government.
Lately, this determination to get rid of the New Deal government has taken the shape of cutting Social Security and Medicare, which led to the brouhaha over President Biden’s charge during the State of the Union address that Republicans would cut those programs. After Republicans booed him and called him a liar, he backed them into agreeing they would take cuts off the table.
But former vice president Mike Pence brought it up once more this morning on CNBC, saying, “While I respect the speaker’s commitment to take Social Security and Medicare off the table for the debt ceiling negotiations, we’ve got to put them on the table in the long term,” because they were facing “insolvency.”
Reversing 40 years of Republican tax cuts would also address financial shortfalls, but that approach does not fit the Republican narrative that cutting taxes promotes growth and raises revenue.
As their policies became increasingly unpopular, Republicans ramped up that narrative until we have the extraordinary scenario we saw last night: former president Trump telling a campaign audience that the United States has blown right past socialism and is now a communist, Marxist country. That, of course, would mean that the people’s government owns the means of production: the factories, services, and so on.
Instead, as President Biden pointed out today in response to right-wing attempts to blame his administration for the Ohio derailment, deregulation has moved money upward and compromised Americans’ safety. He noted that he has committed the federal government to make sure Ohio has all it needs to address the crisis. Then he added: “Rail companies have spent millions of dollars to oppose common-sense safety regulations. And it’s worked. This is more than a train derailment or a toxic waste spill—it’s years of opposition to safety measures coming home to roost.”
That narrative has also enshrined the idea that the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, originally intended to limit the federal government’s power over state militias but now interpreted to mean that individuals have a right to own whatever weaponry they want, defines the nation. After a number of right-wing congressional lawmakers have taken to wearing assault rifle lapel pins, Representative Barry Moore (R-AL) this week introduced a bill to make the AR-15 the “National Gun of America.” Moore claims that “The anti–Second Amendment group won’t stop until they take away all your firearms.”
From February 17 through February 19, there were ten mass shootings in the United States. According to Grace Hauck of USA Today, there were “two mass shootings in Georgia and Missouri and one each in Indiana, Illinois, Tennessee, Louisiana, South Carolina and Mississippi.” Thirteen people were killed and 46 injured. At least 15 of the victims were under 20. Mass shootings are up in 2023 compared to 2022: 82 this year, compared with 59 at the same time last year.
The idea of strangling government programs and saving tax dollars has gotten to the point that we had the extraordinary scene in Alaska earlier this week of Republican state representative David Eastman, who attended the January 6, 2021, rally in Washington, D.C., suggesting that children dying of child abuse would save the state money in the social services those children would otherwise need.
The Republican narrative to attract voters, as warped as it has become, has now begun to drive the government itself. Today, Yvonne Wingett Sanchez and Isaac Stanley-Becker of the Washington Post reported that after the 2020 election, Arizona’s then–attorney general, Mark Brnovich, concealed a report produced after 10,000 hours of investigation by his own staff, that said virtually all the claims of fraud leveled against the 2020 Arizona election were unfounded.
Brnovich was running to win the Republican nomination for a seat in the U.S. Senate. He kept the report hidden and instead released an “Interim Report” saying that his office had found “serious vulnerabilities.” He continued to circulate hints that the vote was off, somehow, despite fact checks disproving those allegations. His office put together a document refuting the idea the election was stolen and saying that none of the people making that accusation produced any evidence. Brnovich did not release that summary.
In a later memo summarizing their work, investigators noted that none of those making outlandish claims about the election were willing to repeat those claims to agents, when they would be subject to a state law prohibiting them from lying to law enforcement officers.
Brnovich was involved in the Brnovich v. Democratic National Committee case, decided in July 2021 by the Supreme Court, that made it much harder to challenge voting restrictions that make it harder for minorities to vote. Voters replaced Brnovich this year with Kris Mayes, a Democrat, who shifted Brnovich’s “Election Integrity Unit,” which focused on fraud, to address voter suppression.
The attempt to maintain the Republican narrative is now deeply embedded in the government itself. House speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) has apparently given to Tucker Carlson of the Fox News Channel exclusive access to more than 44,000 hours of video taken within the Capitol building on January 6, 2021. This amounts to “one of the worst security risks since 9/11,” Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer said in protest today, “a treasure trove of closely held information about how the Capitol complex is protected.”
Carlson has repeatedly challenged the official accounts of the riot, blaming the federal government for launching the attack and claiming that FBI agents were behind it. Carlson is also one of the key conspirators in the Fox News Channel promotion of the Big Lie that Trump won the 2020 election, even though they dismissed that notion privately. The expectation is that Carlson will hack whatever videos he can into a version of the Republican narrative.
But there is more: McCarthy is fundraising off his release of the videos to Carlson, claiming he is delivering “truth and transparency over partisan games” and asking “patriots” to “chip…in” to help House Republicans.

Congress Introduces Legislation to Loosen Cannabis Rules and Combat Military Recruitment Crisis!
Marijuana in the Military: A Push in Congress to Loosen Cannabis Rules and Ease Recruitment Crisis
The debate over marijuana in the military has been a hot topic in recent years, and now a new push in Congress is looking to loosen cannabis rules and ease the recruitment crisis. According to a recent article in USA Today, a bipartisan group of lawmakers is introducing legislation that would allow service members to use marijuana without fear of being discharged. The bill, called the Military Cannabis Safe Harbor Act, would allow service members to use marijuana in states where it is legal without fear of being discharged. Additionally, the bill would also provide veterans with access to medical marijuana in states where it is legal. The bill is being sponsored by Senators Brian Schatz (D-HI), Dan Sullivan (R-AK), and Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ). It is also being supported by a number of veterans’ organizations, including the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America. The bill is being introduced at a time when the military is facing a recruitment crisis. According to USA Today, the military is struggling to meet its recruiting goals and is looking for ways to attract more recruits. Allowing service members to use marijuana in states where it is legal could be one way to attract more recruits. The bill is also being introduced at a time when public opinion on marijuana is shifting. According to a recent Gallup poll, two-thirds of Americans now support legalizing marijuana. This shift in public opinion could make it easier for the bill to pass. The bill is also being introduced at a time when the cannabis industry is booming. According to USA Today, the legal cannabis market is expected to reach $73 billion by 2027. This could create a number of opportunities for veterans who are looking to start their own businesses. The bill is also being introduced at a time when testing and compliance for hemp and cannabis is becoming increasingly important. Hiring an industry-trusted testing and compliance partner like ACS Lab can help ensure that hemp and cannabis products meet safety and quality standards. ACS Lab provides a range of services, including testing, consulting, and compliance services, to help hemp and cannabis businesses stay compliant and safe. Overall, the Military Cannabis Safe Harbor Act could be a major step forward in loosening cannabis rules and easing the recruitment crisis in the military. Additionally, hiring an industry-trusted testing and compliance partner like ACS Lab can help ensure that hemp and cannabis products meet safety and quality standards.

Workforce Pell is a House committee priority
Expanding Pell Grant eligibility to qualifying short-term workforce education programs is a priority this Congress for the House Education and the Workforce Committee.
That statement by committee member Rep. Lloyd Smucker (R-Pennsylvania) on Tuesday at the Community College National Legislative Summit in Washington, D.C., drew applause from the attendees at the early morning session. So-called short-term Pell (which is also called workforce Pell) is a top-list item for community colleges, including the member organizations hosting the annual summit — the Association of Community College Trustees and the American Association of Community Colleges.
With its goal of rapidly developing much-needed skilled workers for businesses and giving individuals the financial means to acquire skills for available jobs quickly, short-term Pell is “hard to argue against,” Smucker said.
House GOP leaders last month introduced legislation to extend Pell eligibility to high-quality, short-term workforce development programs. The measure may be stand-alone legislation or folded into the committee’s work to reauthorize the Higher Education Act, Smucker said, adding that the panel will also work to reauthorize the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, which is the nation’s main workforce development legislation.
North Carolina’s Rep. Virginia Foxx, chair of the House Education and the Workforce Committee, spoke on the House floor on Tuesday in support of the Promoting Employment and Lifelong Learning (PELL) Act, saying the bill would create an affordable education path to jobs and careers.
Sen. Tim Kaine addresses community college leaders visiting Capitol Hill on Tuesday afternoon.
Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Virginia), a staunch supporter of short-term Pell, also in January reintroduced his bipartisan JOBS Act. Kaine also on Tuesday spoke with community college leaders who visited lawmakers on Capitol Hill, asking them to support the bill. He told them: “When you meet with your members of Congress, please say ‘Pell grants for high-quality CTE.'”
Congress came its closest to passing short-term Pell last summer. The measure was added as a House amendment to the U.S. Innovation and Competition Act, but it wasn’t included in the final legislation.
Better connections
Smucker, who also serves on the committee’s higher education and workforce development subcommittee, said the No. 1 challenge for U.S. business continues to be finding skilled employees. He said there needs to be better communication between businesses and community colleges on preparing individuals for available jobs.
“Every industry should be looking to community colleges” to ensure they offer programs that can develop the types of workers they need, he said, citing as an example the work of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, in teaming with healthcare providers in its service areas.
Smucker, who attended college at night as he ran his own construction business, noted that many Americans are now questioning the value of a four-year degree and whether one is necessary for available jobs or for the career that they choose. There’s a movement among employers to focus on the skills-based competency of job applicants rather than simply requiring a baccalaureate. That drew a response from some attendees, who told the congressman that lawmakers also will have to understand what that will encompass.
Smucker also noted his bill, the USA Workforce Tax Credit Act, which would create a new tax credit to encourage charitable donations for community-based apprenticeship initiatives, career and technical education, workforce development and K-12 educational preparedness. Community colleges would be among the eligible nonprofits.
