Jackie Ormes: A Cartoonist Ahead of Her Time
“I have never liked dreamy little women who can't hold their own." –Jackie Ormes
Jackie Ormes is best known as a trail-blazing African-American cartoonist, but she was also a journalist and a civil rights activist. She created two extremely different comics that were seen in newspapers published expressly for African-American readers. Prior to World War II these readers followed the romances of adventuress Torchy Brown, but after the War, Miss Ormes’s single panel comic Patty-Jo ‘n’ Ginger provided biting social commentary through an outspoken six-year old named Patty-Jo.

Jackie Ormes Gets Her Start
Jackie Ormes was “born on August 1, 1911, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania”(1) as Zelda Mavin Jackson. Her father, William Winfield Jackson ran a movie theater and had owned a printing company in Pittsburgh. After he was killed in an automobile accident in 1917, young Zelda and her sister went to live with an aunt and uncle. After her mother remarried, the girls moved with her and her new husband to Monongahela, outside of Pittsburgh.(1)
Throughout high school Jackie, an avid artist and cartoonist, became the arts editor for her high school year book.(1) Her correspondence with the editor of The Pittsburgh Courier, “a weekly African American newspaper that came out every Saturday”(2) led to her first assignment, as a proofreader. Jackie’s talent and hard work soon earned her reporting assignments covering everything from human interest stories to local boxing matches.(1)
In 1936, Jackie met and married businessman Earl Ormes.” Sadly, the couple “lost their only child, Jacqueline, to a brain aneurysm at age 3”(3).
Torchy Brown: “From Dixie to Harlem”
On May 1, 1937 The Pittsburgh Courier became the first newspaper to publish a comic strip written and drawn by a woman of color. (1) On that date Torchy Brown in “From Dixie to Harlem” first appeared in the paper. The strip followed the adventures “of a young country girl who moves from Mississippi to New York City in order to make it as a lounge singer at the famed Cotton Club”(2). While Torchy Brown was written with a humorous tone, the story line “mirrored the journey of many African-Americans who ventured northward during the Great Migration”(1).
The Torchy Brown series “was not syndicated in the usual sense” (1), The Pittsburgh Courier had over a dozen regional editions that were published in cities across the United States. In this way, Jackie’s work had exposure to millions of readers (3).
The Torchy Brown strip only ran for one year. No one knows exactly why the strip didn’t run longer, but there is some speculation that Ormes’s contract with The Courier had ended. Perhaps another reason was that Jackie’s husband, Earl had been offered a job in Chicago (4).
Jackie Ormes: “From Pittsburgh to Chicago”
In Chicago, Earl Ormes became a successful manager in the hotel business, first managing “the DuSable Hotel and later … the more upscale Sutherland Hotel”(4). Once settled in Chicago, Jackie was active in “the music, fashion and artistic communities of Chicago”(4). She had not, however, lost interest in her journalism. Based on her work at The Pittsburgh Courier, she persuaded the editor of one of Chicago’s African-American newspapers, The Chicago Defender to hire her (4).
In 1945, Jackie Ormes returned to cartooning with a one panel strip in The Defender called Candy. The strip “featured a curvaceously-drawn housemaid who wisecracked about her unseen employer and borrowed clothes from her boss’ wardrobe” (4). Unfortunately, Candy was also short-lived, running about four months from March to July (1), and then Ms. Ormes went back to special assignment work for the paper (3).

Patty-Jo ‘n’ Ginger
Later in 1945 Jackie Ormes, introduced her most successful and longest running comic Patty-Jo ‘n’ Ginger selling it to her old employer, The Pittsburgh Courier. The strip features the brash and outspoken six-year-old Patty-Jo and her silent sounding board older adult sister Ginger. “Despite her age, Patty-Jo has both a ‘smart mouth’ and keen insights into” (4) the racial situation in the United States during that time.

The comic’s popularity led Ms. Ormes in 1947 to market a “Patty-Jo” doll.  She “contracted with the Terri Lee doll company … to produce a play doll based on her little girl cartoon character” (1). The doll was popular with both black and white children (1).

The Return of Torchy Brown
In August 1950 The Pittsburgh Courier started publishing “an eight-page color comics insert” (1) which gave Ms. Ormes the opportunity to reprise her Torchy Brown character of 1937 in the strip Torchy in Heartbeats. The new Torchy strip also featured a Torchy paper doll with costumes that demonstrated Ms. Ormes’ talent as a fashion designer. Unlike the Torchy of the 1930s, the resurrected Torchy “was confident, intelligent, and brave” (1) unlike the usual stereotype of African American women at the time. Like Patty-Jo ‘n’ Ginger, Ms. Ormes used Torchy to spotlight controversial issues “everything from race to sex to environmental pollution” (1). During this time, Ms. Ormes support for civil rights and other leftist political issues subjected her to an investigation by the FBI during the McCarthy Era (1,2).

Jackie Ormes Later Years
The last installment of Patty-Jo ‘n’ Ginger ran on September 22, 1956, and it has been speculated that “editorial changes within The Pittsburgh Courier (4)” led Ms. Ormes to retire from cartooning. Although her cartooning days were over, she continued to remain artistically active working on still life paintings, portraits, and murals until the mid-1960s when painful arthritis caused her to stop. She did continue to contribute to many Chicago non-profit organizations with volunteer work and fundraising efforts. One of her most prestigious positions was on the board of directors for the DuSable Museum of African American History. Ms. Ormes was also an avid doll collector with over 150 dolls in her collection. (1)
Jackie Ormes’s Legacy
In 1976 Jackie Ormes’s husband Earl died after forty years of marriage. (1) Ms. Ormes died in Chicago on the day after Christmas in 1985.(4) In 2007 Cheryl Lynn Eaton, writer and cartoonist, founded The Ormes Society, which promotes black female comics artists; the following year a biography of Ms. Ormes was written and published by Nancy Goldstein.(2) In 2014 Ms. Ormes was posthumously inducted into the National Association of Black Journalists Hall of Fame. On September 1, 2020, a Google Doodle commemorated Ms. Ormes and her work. (1) Filmmaker Susan Reib is currently working on a film based Miss Ormes’ life and her Torchy Brown comics.(5)
Through her artistic talent combined with courage and independence, Jackie Ormes was able to influence both the civil rights and womens’ rights movements in a way that no other artist could. Her work continues to inspire contemporary artists and activists.

Fox news NFC South draft grades: Bucs just owning offseason - NFL.com
Tumblr media
Fox news
Why provide instantaneous grades on the selections of potentialities who possess yet to get an NFL snap? Effectively, you are learning this, don't seem to be you? Brooding in regards to the makeup of every roster and the components surrounding every comprise, Gennaro Filice and Dan Parr strive a division-by-division evaluation of the 2020 NFL Draft. Procure in mind that these grades are per draft hauls on my own -- picks traded for historical gamers were now not taken into story. Below is Gennaro's evaluation of the NFC South.
NOTABLE SELECTIONS
BEST PICK: Tristan Wirfs, OT, Iowa Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Spherical 1, No. 13 overall
As talked about earlier than in the NFC East installment of this sequence, over the long, daunting stroll-as much as the draft, NFL.com printed 31 mock drafts by 11 diversified analysts. Of these analysts, handiest one projected Wirfs to Tampa Bay -- and that man did so in all three of his mocks! Charley Casserly, I dub thee Wirfs Whisperer. The frail Redskins/Texans fashioned supervisor had the Bucs plucking Wirfs with the No. 14 overall comprise in Mocks 1.0 and 2.0, and then he had Jason Licht jumping as much as No. 9 in verbalize to staunch the athletic address's companies in Mock 3.0. Coincidentally, neither of these scenarios in point of fact performed out. Effectively, Licht did land Wirfs by shopping and selling up, however handiest by one slot. What became as soon as the inducement within the assist of that uncommon mini-jump up the board? As chronicled by NBC Sports actions' Peter King, Licht had caught wind that 49ers LT Joe Staley became as soon as going to retire -- which he did two days later -- and the Bucs GM became as soon as frightened San Francisco would per chance per chance also comprise the closing of the Nice Four tackles at No. 13. So Licht switched spots with Niners GM John Lynch -- swapping a fourth-spherical comprise for a seventh-rounder at some stage in -- and bought his man, shoring up the protection on Tom Brady's front aspect. And that, boys and girls, is the anatomy of a first-spherical draft comprise.
Tumblr media
MOST SURPRISING PICK: Cesar Ruiz, C/OG, Michigan Unusual Orleans Saints, Spherical 1, No. 24 overall
The Saints arguably entered this draft with per chance the most total roster within the NFL. Which skill, mock predix on the No. 24 comprise were in each place, environment up a scenario the place any comprise shall be deemed a surprise. ... Or no comprise shall be deemed a surprise?? I assemble now not know -- barely made it by Philosophy 101. Nevertheless I contend that Ruiz became as soon as certainly a surprise preference, because Unusual Orleans became as soon as already declare to return all five starters from an extraordinarily adorned neighborhood up front. LT Terron Armstead, LG Andrus Peat and RG Larry Warford made the Skilled Bowl closing season, RT Ryan Ramczyk became as soon as first-personnel All-Skilled and C Erik McCoy nabbed a predicament on PFWA's All-Rookie Crew. So, what's the conception for next season? Straight away following the sequence of Ruiz, who performed heart and guard at Michigan, all eyes went to Warford. The 28-yr-archaic carries the 2d-greatest cap hit on the personnel at $12.875 million, trailing handiest Drew Brees' $23.650 million figure, and closer watchers of the Saints' offensive line than me notify that the lawful guard's play slipped rather closing yr. With a first-rounder now getting into the interior-OL fray, Warford appears to be like like a top reduce candidate. If that's the case, Unusual Orleans will favor to take in trusty over $5 million in dreary money, however that'd peaceful liberate virtually $8 million in cap declare. And it would give the Saints' offensive line an moderate age of about 24 years archaic, with each person below contract by now not lower than the next two seasons. Juicy.
BIGGEST SLEEPER: Tyler Johnson, WR, Minnesota Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Spherical 5, No. 161 overall
With a pair of Skilled Bowl wide receivers (Mike Evans and Chris Godwin) and a trio of proficient tight ends (Utilize Gronkowski, Cameron Brate and -- for now -- O.J. Howard), Tom Brady arrived in Tampa to rather a sequence of hump catchers. Did the Bucs trusty nab the cherry on top: a subtle slot receiver? Johnson rewrote the Minnesota file e book closing season, racking up 86 catches for 1,318 yards. And the bulk of that manufacturing -- 67 catches and 1,086 yards, per Skilled Football Focus -- got right here within the slot. The 6-foot-1, 206-pounder is a atypical more or less participant than the undersized, cat-speedy slot machines Brady maximized in Unusual England. Johnson doesn't shake cornerbacks, he bullies them. Johnson lacks top-stay juice and welcomes contact, excelling in contested-web instances. Nevertheless he does part one fashioned trait with Wes Welker, Julian Edelman and Danny Amendola: pristine route-working capacity. If Johnson can successfully-organized up the drops, he would per chance per chance also hasty turn accurate into a precious weapon in TB12's arsenal.
TEAM GRADES
NOTE: Draft classes are ranked from handiest to worst within the division.
» Spherical 1: (No. 13 overall) Tristan Wirfs, OT, Iowa. » Spherical 2: (45) Antoine Winfield Jr., S, Minnesota. » Spherical 3: (76) Ke'Shawn Vaughn, RB, Vanderbilt. » Spherical 5: (161) Tyler Johnson, WR, Minnesota. » Spherical 6: (194) Khalil Davis, DT, Nebraska. » Spherical 7: (241) Chapelle Russell, LB, Temple; (245) Raymond Calais, RB, Louisiana-Lafayette.
So, what's it gonna be, Bucs followers: Tompa Bay or Tampa Brady? GM Jason Licht continues to assemble every part in his strength to place the brand new franchise face within the very supreme declare to succeed, the employ of three of his first four picks on offensive needs. Wirfs looks to be as if a hump-and-play starter at lawful address, with supreme athleticism and the supreme lower physique I've ever laid eyes on on the NFL Scouting Mix. (Seriously, this man is a miles superior species to me.) Spherical 3 frankly felt a exiguous successfully off for Vaughn -- RB Zack Moss' violent, all-around sport gave the impact quite a bit more enticing at that time -- however the Buccaneers wanted yet another backfield presence to enroll in Ronald Jones II, and it appears to be just like the one-reduce Vandy product became as soon as their man. Johnson shall be the last portion to Tampa's loaded pack of hump catchers, as a huge slot who runs the more or less nuanced routes Brady will fancy. The one defensive participant Licht snatched within the first five rounds is a gem. A flexible safety who's perfect for this day's sport, Winfield hits like his dad and has the playmaking instincts you'd demand from somebody who grew up in NFL locker rooms. "Once I became as soon as youthful my dad would lay in his bed along with his computer computer, and I'd be sitting lawful next to him looking out at film," Winfield said on the combine. Todd Bowles is gonna celebrate with this beginner.
» Spherical 1: (No. 7 overall) Derrick Brown, DT, Auburn. » Spherical 2: (38) Yetur Noxious-Matos, Edge, Penn Deliver; (64) Jeremy Chinn, S, Southern Illinois. » Spherical 4: (113) Troy Pleasure Jr., CB, Notre Dame. » Spherical 5: (152) Kenny Robinson, S, West Virginia. » Spherical 6: (184) Bravvion Roy, DT, Baylor. » Spherical 7: (221) Stantley Thomas-Oliver III, CB, Florida Global.
While you watched the 2020 NFL Draft for five minutes, you heard the phrase "Rhule Restoration" 10 times. So, what precisely is that, moreover rapid alliteration? Effectively, within the first draft of the Matt Rhule technology, Carolina's Rhule Restoration consisted of carpet-bombing the protection with draftees -- ALL THE DRAFTEES. The Panthers grew to became the first personnel within the fashioned-draft technology to employ all of their picks on defensive gamers. It's in point of fact now not that horrid, both. Carolina carried out 31st in scoring protection closing season. ... After which one amongst the very handiest gamers in franchise historical past -- linebacker Luke Kuechly -- all straight away retired. ... After which the Panthers' CB1 signed a mega-address the Giants. ... After which they lost four skilled disruptors up front ( Mario Addison, Bruce Irvin, Dontari Poe and Vernon Butler), as successfully as Eric Reid within the assist stay. Long legend speedy, Carolina got right here into this draft with serious needs on all three phases of the protection. In Spherical 1, the Panthers handed on assemble-every part playmaker Isaiah Simmons in favor of a gargantuan anchor to scheme around (Brown). In Spherical 2, they snagged a toolsy edge rusher to hunt opposite closing yr's first-spherical comprise, Brian Burns, and then traded assist into the spherical to realize Chinn, an nice looking hybrid who sounds like store-trace Simmons. Essentially the most considerable Day 3 addition became as soon as Pleasure, who would per chance per chance also push for early playing time in a cornerback rotation within the meantime topped by the inconsistent Donte Jackson and the awesomely named/minimally confirmed Corn Elder. Rhule Restorers ... MOUNT UP!
» Spherical 1: (No. 24 overall) Cesar Ruiz, C, Michigan. » Spherical 3: (74) Zack Baun, LB, Wisconsin; (105) Adam Trautman, TE, Dayton. » Spherical 7: (240) Tommy Stevens, QB, Mississippi Deliver.
Heading into the draft, Unusual Orleans did now not possess a single obtrusive want. With an NFL-handiest 37 wins over the last three traditional seasons, the Saints boast as successfully-rounded -- and battle-examined -- a roster as there might per chance be within the NFL this day. So or now not it is no surprise they selected to bundle picks in quite a bit of alternate-ups, leaving the draft with the league's smallest prospect haul. How does the category grade out? Now now not too shabby. Spending a first-spherical comprise on an interior offensive linemen is now not precisely moving, however that does not imply or now not it is senseless. Ruiz became as soon as the stop pivot in his recruiting class out of highschool, started at guard and heart in some unspecified time in the future of three gorgeous years of play in Ann Arbor and hits the NFL ready to begin on Day 1. (Incumbent lawful guard Larry Warford and his hefty cap hit seem like on borrowed time.) Baun offers Unusual Orleans a flexible linebacker within the Kyle Van Noy mildew. He can provide stress off the sting, however moreover has the athleticism and consciousness to again his delight in in coverage. And Trautman's an nice looking developmental prospect as a precise Y tight stay. At 6-5 and 255 kilos, he's equal aspects receiver and blocker, however his transition from the FCS to the NFL is gonna comprise time. Shrimp class, massive capacity.
» Spherical 1: (No. 16 overall) A.J. Terrell, CB, Clemson. » Spherical 2: (47) Marlon Davidson, DL, Auburn. » Spherical 3: (78) Matt Hennessy, C, Temple. » Spherical 4: (119) Mykal Walker, LB, Fresno Deliver; (134) Jaylinn Hawkins, S, Cal. » Spherical 7: (228) Sterling Hofrichter, P, Syracuse.
Over the course of the pre-draft course of, Jeff Okudah became as soon as widely notion to be the stop cornerback prospect, whereas C.J. Henderson established himself as CB2. Nevertheless the third-handiest nook on this class? That became as soon as a hotly debated topic. When the Falcons weighed in with their decision -- taking Terrell, an Atlanta native, at No. 16 overall -- many disapproved, in conjunction with ESPN draft guru Mel Kiper Jr., who said the personnel "reached for a want, straightforward and straight forward." I truly possess a sneaking suspicion there might per chance be some recency bias at play right here. Terrell, finally, had a tough evening on the declare of enterprise in his closing sport, the College Football Playoff Nationwide Championship. On the brightest stage of his playing profession, Terrell became as soon as torched by LSU wide receiver Ja'Marr Trot. Nevertheless let's be aesthetic: Who did now not salvage torched by Ja'Marr Trot? The Biletnikoff Award winner caught 84 passes for 1,780 yards and 20 touchdowns -- with the latter two marks environment SEC records -- and he's poised to be a truly highly selected participant within the 2021 draft. Out of doors of that exhausting day day commute, Terrell acquitted himself swish darn successfully on the island. He's long (6-1) and rapid (4.42 40), too. And with each person screaming "REACH!!" upon his preference, the 21-yr-archaic must enter the NFL with a lovely wide chip on his shoulder. Very to seem how his profession performs out.

R. Pittman [Sherry’s mother]; Donald Gilbert [Ronda dated him prior to Greg]; Rhonda S. Childers [classmate]; Rick Steiner [Rhonda’s tennis partner in mixed doubles]; Don and Sandra Colson [Don was Rhonda’s supervisor at Hickory Steel.]; Jean Harris [tennis partner]; Mr. and Mrs. Larry Nichols [classmate]; Charlene Clements and her brother, Greg McDowell [both of whom signed the registry twice]; Martha F. Hinson [Rhonda’s grandmother]; Imogene and Don McGee [Don worked at Hickory Steel; he and his wife sent a condolence letter to the Hinsons subsequent to Rhonda’s murder.]; Eddie and Renee’ Perrou [from whom the Hinsons purchased their Hillcrest home]; Celia Heavner and Winfield Abee [classmates]; Mr. and Mrs. Wayne A, Chapman; John McDevitt [BCSO]; Rev. Robert K. Round [who visited the Hinsons later on December 23rd at Charles McDowell’s request]; Rev. and Mrs. Charles McDowell; Jill Turner [Mull]; Mark Turner; Greg McDowell and Sister Charlene Clements [ for a second time]; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Turner [Mark’s parents]; Mr. and Mrs. Donald Glazebrooks [Neighbor who saw Rhonda walking to I-40 the morning before she was killed]; and a number of Rhonda’s “Price” cousins—from either North or South Carolina.
Sixteen signatures separate those of Greg McDowell—the second time he signed the register—and high school classmate and subsequent pallbearer, Ron Lail.  And over 37-years later, Mr. Lail remembered a brief encounter between him and his classmate, Greg McDowell, on the campus of North Carolina State University during the Fall, 1981—not too long before the killing of Rhonda Hinson.
“I saw Greg one day while I was walking across campus.  He was walking toward me.  There was a young woman walking beside him as he approached me. At first, I thought that maybe the two were walking together; but, as he got closer to me, the girl walked on ahead. Greg stopped to talk to me.  It wasn’t a very long conversation — 35 or 40 seconds.  I asked him how things were going, and then asked how Rhonda was doing.  I knew they had been dating each other for some time. He said, ‘I am actually seeing someone else.’  Well that statement surprised me; but, I didn’t ask what he meant by it, of course. I thought maybe they had had an argument and a breakup.  To tell you the truth, I can only recall seeing Greg a couple of times while at State; and, I can’t say for sure he was walking with that young woman I saw; but, I will never forget what he told me that day when I asked him about Rhonda.”
The ostensible dubious status of his relationship with Rhonda notwithstanding, Greg McDowell was approached by law enforcement and polygraphed within a week of his girlfriend’s murder.  In a couple recorded conversations, Father Charles McDowell recounted details of the first and subsequent polygraphs administered to his son:
“…Greg volunteered to take the polygraph because he wanted to get it out of the way.  Then they said it might not have been valid, because he could have been on drugs…or could beat it.”
Mr. McDowell was accurate in his statement.  According to a couple case file notes, the first polygraph administered to his son rendered an “inconclusive result” — indicating that there was not sufficient data to ascertain whether the examinee was being truthful or deceptive.
An article published on the Public Agency Training Council (PATC), cites some factors contributing to an “inconclusive” result — included are…“improper question formulation based on bad case facts. The lack of fear by the examinee of getting caught in a lie is sometimes a reason for this result. The issue of little or no consequences is another contributing factor.”
Investigators blamed the Hinsons.  “They told us that our insistence that a polygraph be administered to Greg immediately was the cause of the ‘inconclusive” result,’ Judy and Bobby Hinson recalled during a face-to-face interview this past weekend. “During the week following Rhonda’s death, we were just trying to cope with our loss — we weren’t thinking of anything else and certainly didn’t talk to anyone in law enforcement about administering a lie-detector test to Greg.”
The PATC article also avers that an “inconclusive” opinion is generally rendered in about 6 percent to 10 percent of cases, usually requiring a second test.
In his daily recapitulative notes, Detective James “Flash” Pruett wrote that, “Greg failed the polygraph the first time….”  Regardless of the “inconclusive” or “failed” result of the first, a second polygraph was planned.
Reverend McDowell voiced his opposition to another test in a June 28, 1982 interview with SBI Special Agent John Suttle and Detective Steve Whisenant of the Burke County Sheriff’s Office at his residence.  Both officers went to talk with McDowell “…concerning the possibilities of his taking a polygraph test to corroborate his son’s statement and to corroborate also his statement.  Mr. McDowell indicated that due to his being a preacher and that his wife and his word about his son’s whereabouts at the time of the murder should be sufficient…He would not take a polygraph test nor would he agree to go along with letting his son be re-examined on a polygraph…,” the summary read.
Over the objection of his father, Greg McDowell was approached by investigators on Oct. 29, 1982 at 10 a.m., while in school at N.C. State.  In a couple recorded conversations with Judy — one at the Hinson’s Hillcrest residence and a second via telephone — Charles McDowell recalled that October day:
“The police jerked Greg up, out of school and polygraphed him. Steve Whisenant said his experts tell him it has to be done without the person knowing because you can take things to beat it…They went and dragged him out of class and embarrassed him and took him off….”
Detective Lieutenant Steve Whisenant reported that during the October interview — conducted in the university’s security office in Raleigh — Greg McDowell advised that he could not provide any further information than he had earlier regarding his girlfriend’s death.  He maintained that he believed that the person who killed Rhonda could possibly have been someone that wanted the job that she landed at Hickory Steel.
But the 19-year-old did agree to submit to a second polygraph examination at the SBI Office — more than 10 months after the killing of Rhonda Hinson.  At noon on the same day, Assistant Supervisor [Charles] Whitman administered the test; upon completion, he concluded that “…McDowell was being truthful in regards to him not having any involvement in the death of his girlfriend, Rhonda Annette Hinson.”
Detective Pruett acknowledged in his concluding notes that Greg, “…showed no deception in the second time. I might add, the second time was more on Greg’s turf and away from the crime location.”
On Nov. 5, 1982, — seven days after Greg McDowell’s second polygraph — Detective Lieutenant Whisenant received a letter from Attorney Steve B. Settlemyer indicating that he had been retained by the Charles McDowell family to represent them in the matter of Rhonda Hinson’s investigation.  He insisted that any investigator wishing to contact the McDowells should do so through him.
Pastor McDowell initially refused to submit to a polygraph assessment at the hands of authorities. In a Feb. 9, 1984 conversation between him and Judy, conducted at the Hinson residence, the elder McDowell declared:
“I will not take a polygraph to please Steve’s superiors. That is what Steve says I would be doing.  Steve said Greg ruled out the whole family when he took a polygraph, anyway.”
In a subsequent recorded phone conversation with Ms. Hinson, heard by this writer this past weekend at the Hinson residence, Mr. McDowell provided additional explanation for his refusal to submit to a lie-detector test:
“…They asked me about it, and I said, ‘Look, why should I take one when you say it’s not even valid.  I know I’m innocent; to you it doesn’t mean anything; so, why should I take it’ ...The polygraph is not valid. People have been accused and it show they have lied when they haven’t.  They don’t even allow them in court.  And my lawyer said they would polygraph half the people in Burke County if you would let them.  I even thought one time about going out to a private [indecipherable] and saying here are the results if you want them.  But big deal, what does this prove—nothing…”
However, the Reverend Dr. McDowell did relent and finally acceded to being polygraphed.  According to case file notes, “…It was eventually learned that his greatest resistance to the test after the murder was probably a result of his having an illicit affair while he was pastoring [Wilkies Grove] Baptist Church.  He also [previously] stated at that time that the word of he and his wife should be good enough to clear their son.”
Charles McDowell’s polygraph was conducted in 1994.
Editor’s Note:  Both Charles and Greg McDowell have been issued repeated invitations to comment on the details contained in stories in which they prominently appear. To date, neither has accepted the invitations to go on record.  Burke County Sheriff Steve Whisenant was contacted by this writer in March of this year subsequent to a meeting between himself, the Hinsons, and three detectives.  Mr. Whisenant’s standard response concluded with this statement reflective of his willingness to collaborate to bring resolution to this case: “BCSO will be happy to share any public information regarding this ongoing investigation and receive any information that you have that could be useful in bringing justice in this case….Thank you, Steve.”

TROG Brings Street Racing to Drag Racing’s SoCal Birthplace
Back in 2012, a small drag-oriented event held on the East Coast called the Race of Gentlemen (TROG) shook the hot rod scene. Although it gathered only 15 hot rods and 15 motorcycles, it still captured the imagination of gearheads the world over. It was organized on the beach and featured aesthetics reminiscent of faded pictures glued in a 1950s photo album.
Over the years, other TROGs have come and gone, including one in 2016 that tread the sand of Pismo Beach, California (unfortunately plagued by stormy weather). Promoter Mel Stultz and his crew traveled back home afterwards, thinking another race was unlikely to take place on the West Coast. Yet, surprisingly, officials from the scenic city of Santa Barbara contacted Stultz in 2018 and asked him to have an event in town! They made it clear racing on the sand would not be an option, but how about using a street along the beach?
Willys Window: Hot Rod Ranch’s Gil Muro provided this unique perspective of Santa Barbara’s staging lanes through the tinted Plexiglas of his survivor Willys Gasser. Photo: Gil Muro
Stultz loved the idea, and so was born the TROG Santa Barbara Drags. He came to town with the support (and members) of his club, the Oilers, which had been established in Carlsbad, California, in 1947 and was revived a few years ago. The Oilers, with help from local enthusiasts, transformed Cabrillo Boulevard in front of Santa Barbara’s Hilton Beachfront Resort into an eighth-mile dragstrip, where 30 motorcycles and 70 pre-1935 cars entered grudge matches, with no trophy spoiling the fun. As a bonus, an exhibit called Customs by the Sea welcomed a selection of fantastic pre-1959 traditional custom cars.
Want to see more TROG action this year? The city of Wildwood, New Jersey, will have another can’t-miss sand-slinging event on October 4-6.
First in Line: Jimmy White, the owner of Circle City Hot Rods in Orange, California, hasn’t driven his well-known ’31 Model A much in recent years, but he decided to get it ready for the event. This old hot rod, found in Riverside, California, runs a nasty 334ci Hemi equipped with a 6×2 Weiand manifold. It had the honor of making the first pass of the day with Muro’s Willys, the cover car for our latest Gasser-themed issue (“Willys Fever,” May 2019).
Ex-Stocker: Roseville, California’s Jim Luke bought a 100 percent stock ’29 Model A, right down to its mechanical brakes. It had been restored decades ago. Over the course of a year he morphed it into this jalopy, keeping the original rails but installing ’40s hot rod specifics: juice brakes, a ’39 Ford gearbox, a 21-stud flathead, Sharp heads, a Thickstun intake manifold, an Isky cam . . .
Another Bird: We showed you Lynn Bird’s blue ’32 Ford three-window coupe back in March 2019 (“Distinctive Deuce”). Always the tinkerer, his latest endeavor is this great-looking ’25 Model T. It is motivated by a ’49 Mercury flathead that’s assembled with Offenhauser heads and an Edmunds intake. The body sits on heavily modified ’34 Chevy framerails. Bird won most of his races.
Raging Orange: One of the fastest cars running the eighth-mile, the historic Orange Crate (now owned by Steve Gilligan) wowed the crowd with its good looks and performance. Brothers Bob and Terry Tindle bought the ’32 Ford Tudor already chopped in 1959 and went on to transform it into a fast strip contender. It features a tilt body along with a Hilborn-injected 417ci Olds motor with a Potvin blower.
Bad to the Bones: Rolling Bones member Dick Deluna drives and races his ’34 Ford five-window (which has been chopped 6 inches) all over the nation. Check out the unusual grille from a Canadian Cockshutt tractor. Behind it resides a ’49 8BA flathead now displacing 284 ci. It received Stromberg carbs, Navarro heads, an Offenhauser two-carb manifold, and a Vertex magneto.
Heavy Chop: Back from making a pass, this is Tom McIntyre’s ’32 three-window Ford from the Rolling Bones crew. It performed well, courtesy of a ’54 Dodge Ram Hemi bolted to a five-speed ’box for long-distance journeys. The coupe additionally uses a Halibrand quick-change and an aluminum bellypan.
Pretty Penny: Alex Carlos struggled a bit to see the flagman behind the wheel of his chopped Penny Hemi Model T. Spectators loved the car’s track antics, watching as it flew down the eighth-mile thanks to a 354ci Hemi fed by a Weiand intake manifold and six carbs. A four-speed BorgWarner transmission gets the power to the ground.
Sushi and Louis: Team Throttle Racing from Japan entered the field with this (near lane) narrowed modified driven by TROG regular Atsushi “Sushi” Yasui. Behind it sits Louis Stands’ 1927 Ford roadster equipped with a 327ci powerplant from a ’63 Corvette.
Little Zip: A recent Craigslist find, this 1927 T owned by Reno, Nevada, resident Rory Forbes appeared to have been a California circle track racer as far back as 1949. On the dash resides a plaque stating, “Participant NHRA National Drags-1959 Detroit, Mich.” The roadster hasn’t changed much in the last 60 years, still featuring its Joe Bailon paint and Tommy the Greek striping.
Hot Rod Lady: Diana Branch owns both a colorful ’29 Ford roadster and this ’32 Tudor, running a Studebaker V8 bored to 299 ci, a Chevy five-speed transmission, and a Chevy ’57 rearend. The sedan’s good looks should be attributed to the 4 1/2-inch chop and 5-inch channel. The Glacier Blue Chrysler metallic paint does not hurt either.
Stude Study: Traveling with his wife Diana, Tom Branch joined the mayhem with his real steel ’32 Ford showcasing a 304ci ’63 Studebaker V8, hopped up with four Stromberg carbs. Fabian Valdez at Vintage Hammer Garage helped build the roadster, which is fitted with ’50 Pontiac taillights, 15×4 and 15×8.5 American Racing mags, and Inglewood slicks in the back.
The British Are Coming: These 1960s-styled Deuces are owned by two U.K. expatriates. In the near lane is Nostalgia Ranch’s Jay Dean with his 331ci Cad V8 five-window coupe, chopped 3 1/2 inches. In the far lane is Dice Magazine’s Dean Micetich with his three-window, which was painted in 1964. It relies on a ’55 Cad motor and ’57 Olds rearend. Dean dropped the driveshaft during this run, but got it fixed to participate again later!
Spirit of ’47: We introduced you to Paul Gommi in HRD’s Sept. 2018 issue (“The Way We Were”). The competitive racer brought his supercharged ’32 Ford roadster, which was built in 1947 and ran 129 mph at El Mirage shortly after. All eyes were on Gommi, who won his class at the 2018 RPM Nationals, but issues with the flathead’s block didn’t allow him to perform as well as expected.
Local Racers: The Hanssen family are the caretakers of these two racers built by Willis Baldwin of Santa Barbara. On the left is the ’49 Baldwin Special, and on the right, the bare aluminum C/Mod ’51 Baldwin Special used from 1954 until 1957 in SCCA competition. The ’49 Special runs a ’46 Merc flathead with a full-race Clay Smith cam, Edelbrock heads, and triple Strombergs; the ’51 Special is also powered by a Merc flathead, this one fitted with Ardun heads.
Welcome Back: It was good to see Gene Winfield in Santa Barbara, looking none the worse for wear after his European ordeal last year. He was attending a car show in Finland in September when he broke his hip in a bad fall. During recovery, he came down with pneumonia; that and other health complications made it impossible for him to fly commercially back to the States. A GoFundMe page set up to get him home reached its goal in just a few days, and he was back in the U.S. by late October.
Colorado Rods: The Lucky Tramps Car Club out of Colorado presented a couple of fine rides driven by an equally fine couple. Brooke Dolan drove the Deuce coupe with S.Co.T. supercharged flathead power and Navarro heads, while husband Daniel competed with a ’34 five-window Ford with a flathead V8, too.
Fun T Time: Tegan Hammond had a ton of fun racing the Hammond family’s ’27 Ford roadster. The powerplant of choice is a rare 1927 HAL double-overhead-cam four-cylinder. By the next decade, few utilized that engine, as it had been surpassed by Ford’s flathead V8.
Grandpa’s Headers: The exhaust on the banger engine in Jenny Boostrom’s ’23 Model T roadster was fabricated by Jesse Belond, grandson of famed exhaust maker Sandy Belond, using a vintage photo they found as reference. So far it’s the only one, but Jesse hopes to make more, “trying to keep Grandpa’s name out there.” Arch Gratz built the motor with a rare Thomas intake and head, and two Stromberg 81 carbs. Clayton’s Hot Rods in Santa Cruz, California, put the car together, which Jesse bought for Jenny as a Christmas present.
Barnes’ Find: A ’32 Ford coupe with the Pacific Ocean and Channel Islands National Park in the background—what’s not to like? The chopped Deuce belonging to John Barnes had been drag raced around 1951-1954. Lack of hood allowed spectators to admire the supercharged flathead V8 with Fenton heads.
Lake Refugee: Racing against Daniel Shircliff’s orange A is “Hudson Joe” Buffardi’s ’29 Ford roadster, prepared with an uncommon ’49 337ci Lincoln flathead. It is fed by dual Merc side-draft carbs on an Edmunds intake and runs a Potvin cam and Mallory dual-point ignition. It seems that the car raced at El Mirage in the 1950s through the mid 1960s. When Buffardi bought it in 2004 it was “just a body.” He fabricated the hood, nose, and grille. Notice the neat aircraft-inspired exhaust system.
Wheeler’s Wheels: David Wheeler is a regular racer, having competed at the TROG Pismo race and the 2018 RPM Nationals (see our Mar. 2019 issue). He made a handful of passes with his stout Model T.
As the Flag Drops: Tom Franzi of Germany is ready to hammer the throttle of his Model A, which was built in the mid- to late-1950s. He bought it about a week before the race. Seemingly painted metalflake in the 1960s, the 6-inch-channeled roadster with sectioned ’32 grille received a ’56 324ci Olds Rocket V8 at some point.
Harley Alley: The event wasn’t only about cars, as 30 vintage bikes made a ton of passes all day long. Incidentally, Harley-Davidson was a major sponsor of the Santa Barbara Drags.
Wayne’s World: This nice lineup of healthy motors is led by a not-so-common Wayne head-equipped 235ci Chevy six motivating Cedric Meeks’ ’34 Ford coupe. Cedric is the son of Russ Meeks, who won the Grand National Roadster Show’s AMBR award in 1972 with his well-known tilt-body, rear-engined Model A roadster.
Bronze Flame: Lars Mapstead is just the third owner of the Bronze Flame, a real-deal survivor of 1950s hot rodding that still wears its original lacquer flamed paint job over a steel (not aluminum) track nose fabricated by Sam Barris. Original owner Ed Donato raced the car at the lakes and the Santa Ana drags before putting it in storage for some five decades. The car is no museum piece, as Mapstead has run it at the RPM Nationals and the TROG beach race in New Jersey.
By the Sea: TROG Santa Barbara wasn’t only about hot rods. The Hilton’s rotunda also the terrific Customs by the Sea exhibit. It actually called for additional vehicles to be displayed on site, but regulations forced promoters to park a bunch of cars on the other side of the wall, facing the ocean. The two ’36 Fords belong to Alan Windard (Throttlers CC, Salt Lake City) and Jon Fisher (Burbank Choppers CC).
Refined ’50s: It was great to see two of the most elegant chopped customs built in recent years. Scott Roberts’ 1954 Mercury (foreground) cruises thanks to a 292ci Y-block. It features a bunch of traditional alterations: shaved door handles, frenched headlights, rounded corners on the hood and doors, and more. It kept company with Kelly and Mark Skipper’s ’51 Ford with ’53 Chevy teeth.
Buick Beauty: Steve Pierce selected what some might consider an unlikely candidate for a custom project, a ’40 Buick coupe. Among the most noticeable modifications: a top chopped 4 inches in front and 5 1/2 in the back, ’39 Ford headlights, and ’41 Cad bumpers. The color is reminiscent of Ford’s famous Washington Blue.
Grapevine Redux: Back in the day, spray gun extraordinaire Larry Watson prowled the boulevards of Kustomland in a ’50 Chevy that was first painted black and silver. He later resprayed the car in lavender, which is when it acquired the name Grapevine. John Denich owns this clone built with accuracy in mind, from the ’55 Olds headlight rings and side trim to the ’53 Chevy grille and ’54 Merc taillights.
Deuce Duo: The Burbank Choppers Car Club had a handful of rides on site, including this pair of Deuces. Jack Carroll drove the painted example to Santa Barbara. The 5-inch-chopped body shell sits on a chassis assembled by Lynn Bird. Unlike Carroll’s coupe, Deron Wright’s 283ci three-window (right) wasn’t channeled. He also drives it with five-spoke mags compatible with a 1960s hot rod appearance.
The 1,000-Mile Trip: Yep, Daniel Shircliff traveled in his daily driven Model A from Phoenix for the weekend, adding a thousand miles to the odometer. His Craigslist find was apparently built around 1961-1962 and last driven in the 1970s.
Antique Vibe: Blessed by beautiful weather, the staging lanes remained packed all day long. With 70 cars registered, each participant had the opportunity to make several runs. Palm trees as far as the eye can see contributed to the fantastic vibe of this inaugural get-together which, we hope, will return to the West Coast in 2020.

Mom of two without AC in apartment for 18 days
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Antoinette Davenport is thankful for air conditioning after 18 days in the heat.
When the A/C went out, the mom of two called the front office at the Winfield Place Apartments, where she has lived for four years. Davenport said, "They told me air was a luxury."
While Kansas City experienced two heat waves, Davenport says temperatures inside her apartment reached over 90 degrees.
41 Action News contacted the Monroe Group, which manages the apartment complex. The company said it was waiting for another bid for the air conditioner repair, but there was no deadline to complete the work.
Then, we reached out to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development which forwarded us to the Missouri Housing Development Commission. A representative for the MHDC said, "The safety of the environment for residents is a top priority."
Thankfully, two window A/C units were installed in Davenport's apartment as well as the other units that did not have air conditioning. The property manager and MHDC say a company will be out to fix the central air conditioning for all residents at Winfield Place Apartments on Friday.

The Timberwolves will definitely make the NBA playoffs ... in 2018
Good morning. We have that and more in Tuesday’s NBA newsletter.
The Timberwolves are giant killers. Minnesota beat the scorching Wizards on Monday night behind another massive outing from Karl-Anthony Towns (the reigning Western Conference Player of the Week) and 19 assists from Ricky Rubio. That win goes into a bucket with recent Minnesota wins over Golden State, the Clippers and Utah. The Wolves have won seven of their last 10 against a pretty darn tough schedule. (The tough schedule continues with Boston and Miami this week.)
Over those 10 games, Towns is averaging 28 and 15 on 61 percent shooting. Rubio is averaging 14 and 11. But the important part is the defense, in which both of those guys also factor heavily. Over the past 10 games Minnesota has the No. 2 defense in the league (again, that comes against some damn good teams). Defense is what held the Wolves back early this season. It's also what we knew Tom Thibodeau would install as the new coach of the team. It's happening now.
Unfortunately, Minnesota dug too deep a hole even in the shallow West. The Wolves are 3.5 games behind the hot Nuggets with 16 games to go. That's a tough path. So we look toward next year, where -- barring injuries -- Minnesota will be a popular and safer pick to end their long playoff drought. Their path looks like it may follow that of the Utah Jazz: from the playoff fringe to a solid mid-pack team in a year or two. It'll be interesting to see how Thibodeau attacks the offseason as a personnel guy.
For now, it's really nice to watch Rubio thrive after all the trade rumors and watching Towns is always a revelation.
Scores Galore ...
CHI 115, CHA 109 DAL 78, TOR 100 MIL 93, MEM 113 ATL 99, SAS 107 WAS 104, MIN 119 LAC 108, UTA 114 ORL 115, SAC 120 LAL 101, DEN 129
... And Plenty More
The San Antonio Spurs have officially taken over the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference. Kawhi Leonard was cleared for action, and he scored 30 again to lead the Spurs past the Hawks. San Antonio clinched the tiebreaker over Golden State in that Saturday night travesty, and the teams are knotted at 52-14, so the Spurs are officially in first place. And Kawhi isn't a valid MVP candidate?
Ricky O'Donnell has the 50 players you need to know for March Madness. This is my study guide.
Jon Bois' latest episode of Pretty Good digs deep into the mystery of a record-breaking 1992 "basketball game" between Troy State and DeVry. Jon Bois is a national treasure.
I'll come right out and say it: I'm not sure we should take LaVar Ball's claims at face value. Lonzo's dad, who averaged 2 points per game at Wazzu in the late '80s, says he could have taken Michael Jordan 1-on-1 and claims to want a $1 billion shoe deal for his sons (despite the fact that Lonzo is going to be in the NBA next year and the youngest son is years away from being eligible to take sneaker money). The dude sure is entertaining, though.
Kristian Winfield on Notorious B.I.G. Night in Brooklyn. Very cool idea from the Nets.
Oh no! Chandler Parsons tore his meniscus again. That's three knee injuries in three years. For the record, The Chainsmokers broke through around the team Parsons' career went sideways. We might have a Harry Potterish "neither can live while the other survives" prophecy here. Just another reason to ban The Chainsmokers, assuming of course poor C-Parz isn't in fact the long lost third Chainsmoker.
What a mess the NBA Draft Lottery race is shaking out to be.
Tim Cato writes that Markelle Fultz is probably still the No. 1 pick despite missing the tournament.
Michael Pina makes the case for Andre Roberson to win Defensive Player of the Year.
Big Tim Keown blow-out on Russell Westbrook.
That feeling when you commit a Shaqtin' The Fool candidate right in front of Shaq. (The Brent Barry, Derek Fisher, and Shaq broadcast team put on for TNT's "Players Only" theme was pretty interesting. I'd like to see Fish, Bones and Chris Webber. And I really want to see new TNT contributor Chris Bosh do a game.)
Larry Sanders is back in the NBA, and he might win a championship.
Interesting read from Marc Spears on how black NBA players have embraced Salt Lake City.
Let's talk about two wildly successful businesses with madly dysfunctional basketball teams. Kristaps Porzingis is confused about what the heck the Knicks are doing. Dwyane Wade wishes the Bulls' front office would address his team's collapse.
Sam Amick polled 32 front office executives on the MVP race, and it looks like James Harden is narrowly edging Russell Westbrook and Kawhi Leonard among that group. It'll be interesting to see where the media goes and how the last month changes things.
