July 2023 Monthly PAC

Welcome back lovelies! This time I've prepared a monthly PAC reading for July. Settle in, relax, and let your intuition guide you as you choose which message you need to hear for the month ahead.

The Fool – What do the earliest stages of work on a game look like for you? OR How did you get into game design?

i have a notes discord server! and a channel in there specifically for game ideas. previously i had a big word document titled "game ideas", but its easier to access discord from my phone lol

usually i have an idea and i stick it in there first

heres the start of the pillars of creation :3

and then ill noodle around with it, just brainstorm and slap spaghetti around. this is another reason why i like discord for this at the moment, its informal and easy, much less daunting than a word doc

i didnt end up using most of the bits here lol

and then ill move it into a word doc once its clear that ive got an actual project / game starting to form!

the one problem with this is sometimes ill keep an idea in there for much longer than i should and it becomes a mess of me replying to myself, terrible to follow. this is the current problem with moonlight whaling, sigh

The Empress — Where do your ideas come from? OR Do you seek out or avoid inspiration while working on an idea?

a lot of places!! tumblr being one of them, sometimes ill see a post where im like "huh that could be a game in some way" and ill stick it in my notes discord for later. but really anything, books, movies, songs, other games. im not the first to say this but u gotta read / watch / experience new things to make new things

The Hierophant — Who is a fellow game designer you’ve learned a lot from? OR What is a piece of popular wisdom about games you think is nonsense?

i answered the second one here so ill answer the first!

ive learned a lot from any designer whos game ive played or read, to start. but i wanna shout out @thydungeongal on here, her posts abt game design and rollmaster / d&d are highly highly fascinating and helpful to me, as a guy who hasnt even played d&d let alone any old school stuff and just kinda jumped into the indie scene from the start.

kinda makes me wanna play rollmaster, ngl. whats it doin with all those mechanics and tables =w=

The Chariot — What is the next project you’re planning to start OR What is the next project you’re excited to finish?

this has been my big question to myself recently, what game to really focus in on next. i have games that just need to be finished, but i think my next one* is gonna be this time travel game ive been thinking of

working title is Hooked, and the reason i think im going to start (and finish) it next is cause ive already got the main mechanic figured out, where when you fail a roll you can choose to create a hook, and in doing so succeed the roll

but that hook is a place where a future you has traveled back to that point in time and given you what you needed to succeed, which means at some point youre going to have to come back and close the loop, or else risk creating a paradox

too many paradoxes and the universe explodes so like. be careful :3!

it is going to be a lot of work, i want the general aesthetic to be the journal of a time traveler, with notes from all their future and past selves scrawled in the margins in different colors. and theres the question of if its a solo game or multiplayer, or both. solo-friendly is my current thought, but encouraged for more than one person. but we'll see how it actually plays.

The Hanged Man — What other creative pursuits do you have? OR What current trends in game design are you most interested in?

but! i have a crochet project on the mind so i wanna talk abt other stuff im into also :3

im currently considering ADHD and how it could possibly relate to myself, so just keep that in mind when i say ive dipped my paws into a whoooole lot of different creative hobbies. sewing, knitting, pottery, bookbinding, needle felting, jewelry making, and yea, crochet, are all stuff ive been into at one point or another

but my favorites are crochet and cooking / baking. for most of my life i thought my career was gonna be in food service! ive been a baker, cake decorator, and diner cook before, and loved all three of those jobs.

and crochet is great mainly cause you can make stuffed animals / amigurimis >:33 i loooove little guys and being able to choose what soft yarn im gonna make em out of, though its been a minute since ive made one. but!! like i mentioned ive got a project on the mind, as im gonna try and make the "something strange and indescribable" from the Before the Flood backerkit campaign and im very excited abt it :3 stay tuned for posts abt my success or failure on this front

The Devil — What motifs or mechanics do you just keep coming back to? OR What is a game you’ve enjoyed playing in the last year?

NIGHTHAWKS by @titanrpg is really really good. it has a heart in it, one that beats at an all too-familiar rhythm. when i played it we told a story that was perhaps a touch too close to home as well, disparate sad people sitting several stools apart at a dive bar in a small town.

i have a tendency towards comedy when i play ttrpgs, but my favorite moments are all when ive been deeply serious and sad, and thats what i got from NIGHTHAWKS

The Tower — Talk about about a game you tried to make that crashed and burned.

center of the known universe was an anthology of games i wanted to make a while back, all inspired by the part of the nevadan desert i live in. i dont think its crashed and burned necessarily but i certainly never finished it and im not sure i ever will, though i still like the ideas for some of the games and may release them individually

The Star — Talk about a game you’re working on and what excites you about it.

a game ive been working on for a looong time that i dont think ive really talked abt on here is The Lady, The Tiger, and The Accused. its a descended from the queen game based on The Lady or The Tiger? short story, where (to put it very briefly) a king has created a new form of justice where the accused is put in an arena with two identical doors in front of them.

behind one door, a lady of an appropriate social standing for them to marry, behind the other a very hungry tiger. this leaves the verdict up to fate, for if the accused is innocent they will surely pick the door with the lady, and if they are guilty they will choose the door with the tiger.

but the accused in the story is also the lover of the lands princess, and when they look back at her for the last time she raises a hand and points towards one of the doors.

the question in the story is one of love. would the princess rather see her lover dead, or married to someone else?

what comes through the door, the lady or the tiger?

but! there are other characters in this story, with agency and lives of their own.

The Lady, The Tiger, and The Accused instead asks a question of trust. when The Accused looks back towards their princess, and she raises her hand, do they trust her? do they open the door that she points towards?

its a game for three players, with each person playing one of the titular characters. it uses the descended from the queen format to create the character of the princess throughout play, along with the characters of The Lady, The Tiger, and The Accused.

its a good game!! ive got a bit more work to do on it, mainly on the tiger role. not everyone is comfortable being an actual tiger and role playing scenes that involve communicating with humans or attending parties and such, it turns out.

but im really excited abt it overall :3 its good and fun and i think it uses the descended from the queen format really well and hopefully one day ill do a crowdfunding project for it and get enough money to hire a bunch of different artists to make princess illustrations for it >:333

The Sun — Talk about a game you’ve made that you’re proud of.

im proud of all of my games, in one way or another. but, with an obligatory Before the Flood mention (crowdfunding now!), im really and truly proud of my body is your body is our body is

it was my first kinda big game that i published, and there was a lot of stuff with the first edition i really wasnt super happy with. im really, really proud of myself for finally going back in this year and fixing it. its so much better now! in a lot of ways.

and i mean it was good to start with also, most of my problems were with the programming side of it. when i was making the second edition reading back through the game made me cry a bit lol. theres a lot of banger lines in there and a lot of feelings.

felt like talking about megaten demons again so here’s some official art of demons based on mostly american horror/sci-fi.

list of names n extra notes:

audrey (audrey ii from little shop of horrors), betelgeuse (beetlejuice from… y’know, beetlejuice), chris the car (christine the car from christine), nickelwise (pennywise from it), friday (jason voorhees from friday the 13th), franken (frankenstein’s monster from frankenstein), terminator (similar to the t-800 from terminator), scanner (likely a reference to the movie scanners), and hierophant (pinhead from hellraiser).

yeah hierophant is an alternative nickelwise which is why i’m putting it here despite the hellraiser franchise spawning from britain. idk how hierophant got that name since i don’t remember anything in at least the first hellraiser that could warrant the alternative name. (could’ve called it idk spikehead if they wanted to avoid copyright.) technically this might not be the first time a demon’s design was inspired by cenobites as lucifer’s infamous redesign for 4 closely resembles them. similar reasoning for franken, being an english work. like stated before, most of these are taken from american works, especially stephen king.

there’s more stephen king demons, though like many enemies exclusive to persona 1 and is/ep, only spritework exists, my personal favorite being carrie. kinda a shame there’s been no character or persona in persona inspired by her, since the og book and film adaptations are the trippiest “dangers of extreme religious worship”/child abuse is wrong/anti-bullying things i’ve ever seen. (there’s also a movie sequel that’s basically the first with less religious extremism and more goth icon/dangers of frat boy culture/really good rock backing tracks.) idk the concept of psychic girl who gets bullied a ton feels like it would be right at home as an atlus rerelease extra girl.

of course terminator sticks out too. when it comes to forgotten smt demon, terminator is an icon in that department. outside of the guns being the same and being (presumably) a robot (idk i haven’t gotten around to playing smt 2 yet but there’s a lot of more mechanical demons based on all the art i’ve seen), the name is the closest it really is to resembling the t-800s. idk to me it feels like it’s different enough that bringing it back in at least one future megaten game wouldn’t be that much of an issue compared to other horror icon references. they could just change the guns/ditch the guns altogether and change the name. really cool overall.

scanner is another weird one that i kinda wanna see again just because it sounds like it could be cool. dude only appears in smt 1, and while fan wikis aren’t super reliable sources, because it gave off that “this has to be some reference to a cheesy 80s movie” vibe, i dug into the origins more. yeah there’s a canadian fic called scanners and yeah scanner is 100% based on the whole idea of scanners in the film. never seen it nor heard of it, but hey the director, david cronenberg, also directed the fly so it’s probably a fun watch.

friday’s design is technically wrong though it’s also kinda not. despite jason most often using a machete (and preferring to kill horny teens), a lot of references have him using a chainsaw.

chris the car is technically not completely gone. of course the idea of ghost drivers and the like in media are nothing new (though the car itself is the killer in christine) so for all i know i’m overthinking it or it’s a coincidence, but oboroguruma—a demon exclusive to dsrk 1 and 2–seems to take some design inspiration, having a similar destroyed bumper/grill with an exposed motor.

lastly, while not pictured here or anything, something i found out one time is that lucifer’s favorite fake name, louis cyphre, is a reference to the novel falling angel/its film adaptation, angel heart, though none of the various disguises resemble how he looks in the film. idk i found that an interesting tidbit.

kaneko was apparently into western media (which is unsurprising) so that’s likely the reason there was so many of these movie references during the earlier days of megaten. what i’m sure is due to copyright, many of these older demons never appeared again. copyright law does vary in different places and i’m sure for the few jjba fans who are reading this, you know just how lax japan is in comparison likely due to being western stuff and most copyright holders don’t have that much of an international grip. unless you’re disney. with the whole localization effort atlus might’ve not wanted to have to change a bunch of shit which i don’t blame them for. though with the existence of nickelwise and hierophant coming from tokyo mirage sessions, a pretty recent game (released in 2015 and rereleased on the switch in 2020) that doesn’t seem to have run into copyright issue or had to take them out in the rerelease as far as i’m aware, it’s not entirely impossible to see anything similar again. it is kinda sad though.

Major Arcana Inspired Character Asks

The High Priestess: When has trusting their instincts paid off for your character?

Nikoletta: Pretty much her whole life has been rooted in trusting her instincts. If she didn't trust her gut, she'd probably have ended up blindsided and beaten, even killed, in Belle Reve. She's only alive because she knows how to trust her gut.

Jimmy: Let's be honest, his instincts are terrible. Well, more accurately, his instincts are fine, he just has a habit of getting so caught up in his hopes and desires that he pushes those instincts to the side. In most regular situations, his instincts have kept him safe in a lot of ways, but as soon as his emotions start to get in the way, he gets himself in trouble (like we see in Francesca - it wasn't that he didn't know things could go wrong, he just really wanted to believe they wouldn't)

The Chariot: What goal is your character determined to reach?

Nikoletta: She doesn't really set goals for herself - she knows all too well that life can be turned on its head at a moment's notice - but subconsciously she's just driven to find security in her life.

Jimmy: He's determined to pull his life, or at least some semblance of it, back together. We see this in Francesca, of course, his journey from a shapeless ghost to the human, tangible form he is presently, but that's not the end of it. He wasn't ready to leave his life, and he's determined to grab this second chance by the horns.

Strength: On what issue is your character persistent?

Nikoletta: She's persistent about keeping herself safe, sometimes through any means necessary. Whether that means reinventing herself, instilling fear in others, pushing her emotions and personality aside, anything to keep her alive and safe.

Jimmy: Similar to the prior question, he's persistent in finding or building a new sort of life for himself.

The Hanged Man: When has your character needed to step back and look at things from a different perspective?

Nikoletta: When she first started living together with Abner after everything in Corto Maltese, she had to step back and reexamine the habits she'd built in Belle Reve. Closing herself off and snapping at her living partner may have worked to build an illusion of power in Belle Reve, but now it just threatens to fracture the trust she's built with Abner. They both had to adjust to a normal domestic lifestyle, since neither of them had really had that before.

Jimmy: Watching the world change around him has definitely inspired him to look at things from a new perspective, especially when it comes to increasingly-accepting views on diversity.

Death: When has your character had to let go of something in their life?

Nikoletta: She accepted very early on that she wouldn't ever get to be a kid, since she had to grow up quickly to keep the household running (especially after her father died, and she had to support herself while finishing high school). She's gotten comfortable with the idea, though sometimes she does see a kid doing some fun childhood thing and it makes her inwardly grieve a little since she never got the chance to make those memories.

Jimmy: In his life, he had to let go of the idea that he'd eventually be able to find love and get married, since he knew the society around him would do anything to keep that from happening. It got more painful as he grew older and watched his friends find partners, but he generally learned to accept that he wouldn't be able to live a life like that

The Moon: When has your character’s path been unclear?

Nikoletta: Any transitional period in her life: when she first got out of STAR Labs, when she first entered Belle Reve, when she first started living with Abner, etc.. After a while, she starts to carve out a path for herself by force of will, but those immediate big changes in her life definitely result in a lot of uncertainty at first.

Jimmy: Again, when he first became a ghost and wasn't sure how much of himself he'd be able to recover. He fought hard, but he still wasn't sure how far he'd get, or why he'd even become a ghost in the first place.

Judgment: Has your character ever been given a second chance?

Nikoletta: She'd argue that her opportunity for a secure life after Corto Maltese was more of a first chance, since life pretty much chewed her up and spit her out before that.

Nikoletta: She viewed herself as an overall decent person up until her dad's death - childhood struggles or not, she was generally polite and made friends with all the stray cats and helped out in her community, and she believed she was a pretty good person. Then her dad died, and she had to turn to her voodoo scam just to make money, then even that escalated into home break-ins when she was short on money... and she couldn't really believe she was a good person at the core of it anymore. And of course, everything she did in Belle Reve only shattered what little glimmers of that still remained.

Jimmy: He was raised to be a Christian, if only by circumstance, and so he believed in a concept of Heaven and Hell - he even believed, despite all that homophobic rhetoric around him, that he might've been a good enough person to make it into Heaven. Instead he became a ghost, with no proof of either realm's existence. That definitely twisted things up a bit for him.

Justice in Reverse: When has your character been treated unfairly or cruelly?

Nikoletta: Well, the justice system is already known to be incredibly biased against both women and People of Color, as well as there being a disproportionate financial bias against People of Color, so... systemically, a lot of her life has been defined by unfairness and cruelty. Not to mention the way she was treated while in Belle Reve - if she hadn't built up such a reputation for herself, it could have been even worse than it already was.

Jimmy: Yeah... a lot of these answers boil down to the same event. He was killed out of bigotry, which is really the ultimate display of cruelty and unfairness.

The Star in Reverse: When has your character lost faith?

Nikoletta: She's not a person with much faith to begin with, but I'd say she lost the last of her already-limited faith in humanity when she was captured in STAR Labs. Just the idea that anyone could be cruel enough to do such terrible things without even the slightest hint of remorse... that was the nail in the coffin.

I lost track on how many times I read about people noticing that Pedro is not the most "tidy" person when it comes to his looks in his personal life. From his nails, to his bed-hair to stained shirts (that he wears a billion times)… anyway, considering all that: can you ask the cards if he'd change his lazy appearance maintainence for a woman? and I say woman because we all know how common it is to men to get into a relationship with a woman and suddenly become a "new" man lol we girls have this power to "inspire" them to groom themselfs more, right? 🤭 but would that happen with Pedro? would he made an effort to buy other shirts and comb his hair and such for a woman he's in love with?

Hello! Well, I think it doesn't really have to be a woman, anon. A male partner could have the same effect, actually, or "demand" the same thing should he be in a relationship with someone. He might also want to impress a lover of any gender too, but let's ask the cards.

The first Arcana for this question on whether he could feel the need to "sharpen" his looks a bit for a partner were the 9 of Spears, 3 of Hedgehogs and 5 of Spears. 9 of Spears showing up again is once more speaking of anxiety and worries. This man seems to really get anxious in many situations, which is completely normal, of course. 3 of Hedgehogs is the card of partnership and communication and team work, and it could be pointing to him actually considering changes if the partner suggested him something about it, and they talked and it made sense to him in a way, but that would cause a lot of anxiety. 5 of Spears is the card of defeat, conflict, frustration and poor communication, so it most likely wouldn't be a good thing and it wouldn't work out so well.

The next cards were 10 of Hedgehogs, The Hermit (just because I said he wasn't coming up lol) and 9 of Flowers. So, 10 of Hedgehogs is the card of success and achievement, and in a relationship it means having it all, building a strong partnership, but it could come out as some selfishness too, in a sense that maybe wanting him to change would be wanting too much from him. That would cause him to retreat to himself, distance himself, to close off and start thinking and evaluating this relationship and the situation. That would be The Hermit. The 9 of Flowers is about him hesitating, not believing he could pull it off and make it work.

The last 3 cards were the 8 of Hedgehogs, Knight of Teacups and King of Hedgehogs reversed. King of Hedgehogs reversed, however, shows that this will once again not work out. I then pulled one single card as a closing thought and it was The Hierophant reversed, This one made the entire reading even clearer and gave it a round, full meaning. This one means a struggle with an authority, with the norm and the rules. Pedro doesn't like authorities (in this case, in a relationship context) and he will defy them, he will not abide to them even if he tries. So, if a patner makes him feel like he should change his ways for them, he could potentially try to adapt for a bit but then he will get really bothered by it and he will clash with this notion and with the partner.

the magician – how does your muse feel about fate? do they believe they can change their own destiny?

i don't think catarina believes in fate so much as she believes in cycles? there are cycles of everything. like karma, the dragon whose blood supplements her family's lineage. what goes around comes around – she adheres to that a lot in life and believes that people always, always get theirs. things come in threes. the more things change the more they stay the same. people repeat themselves. in some way or another, there's always a cycle of something.

but because destiny isn't really something he expects to chart the course of his life, he strongly believes in the power of like... decisiveness and strength of character/conviction. you choose the future and the path you walk, for the most part. to that end, sometimes she'll help instigate 'karma' according to her own judgement. and the same applies to the whole of her life, i think. where she sees fit to but in, she probably will. if she didn't believe she could change her lot in life, i don't think she would make the journey post-tadpole in the first place; she definitely sees herself as capable of like... doing something. if this doesn't end the way she wants it to, she at least did her damnedest to get close.

and naturally, i think her guardian is compelled by a sort of pragmatic approach to changing the tide of fate. in their own ways, they're both sort of hellbent on mending their own wounds before the world can get any worse for them (and others consequentially).

the hierophant – what are your muse’s morals / ethics? do they follow their moral code strictly?

OH MAN!!! it's definitely chaotic neutral for a reason. she has a sort of personal code she adheres to... in terms of being very protective of innocence, he won't let certain things go unpunished/ignored. that said, catarina can be a little selective in terms of what justice means in different corners of his life. i think in times of really great despair or considering the greater good, he tends to look ahead rather than into specifics. he doesn't make excuses for shitty choices, he just has his own priorities and has VERY little care for what others think of him.

it's like. yes she will follow her own beliefs but probably not to a hard T – there are grey areas (like. Late Game Stuff has grey areas that he's like. Well that's awful. That's an awful lot in life. But I can't save everybody and make everything right. There's a whole world at stake.) there are things that haunt him but never ones that are trivial. she holds herself to pretty high standards and has trouble forgiving herself for losses she tried to prevent, though. it's like this deep and turbulent sense of guilt that's been buried 7 leagues under the sea and goes unaddressed.

i think it's because of his carried, quiet sense of guilt that almost no one sees that the guardian can reach him emotionally in the first place. like... he disarms it and reassures her. it's not your fault the world is wicked. is that for his own good? is it for hers? to her, she knows what he's doing. they have to work together, and catarina suspects he's being used as a means to an end from the beginning. but there's this looming tenderness that i think sort of neither of them know what to do with. like. you've saved me and i'm your sword and this is going to hurt but then why do you let me in like this. YOU KNOW. the guardian inspires a lot of like. catarina's urge to be saved. and he knows that obviously. so even as she resents him for it... onward they move. and sometimes the rules get bent for the sake of that to keep poisonously blooming.

the lovers – how important are relationships to your muse? do they value having a significant other?

catarina grew up in a HUGE family like huge (so many brothers) and her parents' marriage is one full of love. two of her elder brothers got married before she even left home and they're like very fulfilled/have a strong sense of love and judgement and she sees it as a very like... when your life is settled down you'll know what you want/you'll know what's right for you. he's had quite a few flings so far but nothing very serious. i think she had a very sweet significant other about 10 years ago but it didn't last very long? like... it was too sweet and not quite fast enough and didn't do it for her.

me making this character in the bare bones stage like: yeah there's no way idk what to do she feels doomed to end up in a mcr romance (and obviously got one). she's not dependent on love, never has been, has been perfectly fine not falling in love and didn't see it for herself for a while in fact! but. The weight of desire when it disgusts you and you're digging your own hole that is not your grave and so on.

justice – does your muse find it easy to be impartial in emotional situations?

not at all. he's relatively course/stoic in terms of disposition but high tension makes his temper flare. he's not the one to find if you need a cool head. catarina is like... more likely to breathe fire than to make sense. i think the guardian is her voice of reason (when he's not urging him to EAT WORM). he's a lot more realistic than she is when there's a lot at stake. her resistance melts and she throws tiffs.

the world – is there one thing in life that your muse must accomplish? what will they do when they complete that goal?

i think catarina's goal is more like his birthright, which is to protect the vestige her family watches over. he has to live and die making sure that thing stays safe and cared for. being the most draconic of her brothers she feels the most connected to it as well, so that definitely plays a part too! otherwise, i think her ambitions rest more in seeing what more the world has to offer, and assuring her family's security and happiness. he tries not to think too hard ahead, or about the end. an everlasting ambition is more comfortable.

his guardian is... trying to protect the world from absolute destruction, heheG:JSDGLKSHDF. once things settle down, i really do not know what either of them will make of that. i haven't beaten the game so i'm not even sure where to start 😂 BUT i think! they have things to work through. afterward. Some Thoughts on Why White Pagans Need to Heal Their Relationships with Christianity

Note: I've been trying to write a piece like this for months and the only way I know how to write this is to be very vulnerable and personal. So just please keep that in mind as you read this. It isn't very refined and it's something I'm still very much in process with, to borrow a phrase from my charismatic Christian upbringing. It's more a diary entry than a finished piece and none of these thoughts are original or eloquent. My hope it's helpful to see someone thinking through these things though.

If you're white and you don't want to further colonization and imperialism in your spirituality, then going back to Christianity in some form is pretty necessary; to do the work of decolonizing it's doctrines and to prevent taking from traditions that aren't ours.

This is just the conclusion I've arrived at after a lot shadow working in and around both my ancestors and my religious trauma. My ancestors aren't all white Europeans. But given that I'm white and I don't have any way to carry on the traditions of those that weren't, I feel like the best way to honor those non-white ancestors is to go back to the spiritual traditions I do have access to and doing the work of reshaping them into something less harmful.

I have read and intellectually understood that culture forms the foundation of spirituality and that when you remove something from it's originating culture, that concept or tool no longer works properly, if at all. In working with my non-white ancestors, I really got it on a practical and emotional level. There was this sense that they'd love for me to know their traditions but that it required an understanding that just isn't possible for me given my upbringing and disconnection - "you don't know the words and there's no way to find a person who can teach you" as one ancestor put it. It was an important reminder that "this isn't for white people" isn't merely a categorical assertion but a cultural and practical one.

They've generally asked I stick to practices I have a cultural grounding in when honoring them, even though it is not theirs - the cultural and linguistic element is that important to them. They would rather an authentic expression of gratitude and care through a ritual that isn't theirs rather than an imitation of one that is or being left out of my practice all together. Which makes sense to me in a relational way I hadn't fully grasped before.

In working with my white ancestors, I've come to more viscerally understand that the present understanding of Christianity is wildly different than other historical understandings. One thing that surprised me was that some of my more recent ancestors have expressed more discomfort around my queerness and transness than many of my older ancestors but both root their understanding in the Bible. I enjoyed one ancestor who, when I explained that I'm partnered with a woman, to mean that I would have a life of service - "no men to distract you from God" - which I mean is not wrong on several levels. It really highlighted for me that Christian doctrine is far more flexible than I'd initially thought. It challenged ideas I'd picked up through traumatic religious experiences. So much of what I'd assumed was Christianity itself seems to be more Christianity right now.

The historical angle is really important me. One of the things that drove my interest in Paganism was trying to understand what came before Christianity, to connect with whatever had been cut off in that process. The more I've come to learn about imperialism within Europe - how various empires conquered and destroyed localized traditions indigenous to parts of Europe - it clicked for me that my white ancestors did to others what had been done to them. It is intergenerational trauma in a nutshell.

It's also striking to me that so many people term the traditions pagans pull from as "dead" religions or at the very least "not living". For years I took that to mean they were "safe" to take from, that I wouldn't hurt anyone by doing so. But I hadn't really understood the weight of what "dead" meant - that there was no one left alive who could teach me, that I can't live in a context where all of the beliefs, tools, and traditions make intuitive sense. And if it was important to my ancestors who had had a connection to their traditions, then what was I missing by reanimating these traditions without that link?

I don't have a full visceral understanding of what I'm missing to be honest. I have a feeling that'll develop as my practice evolves. But that question alone has marked a pretty important change in how I understand myself spiritually.

The living and cultural element to my practice is more important to me now. For me, just given the family, community, and area I was raised in, that means Christianity is the living tradition I have access to and I've been revisiting it. I was reading an interview the other day with someone who is both a Catholic theologian and a practicing Buddhist. I liked the way he put it when he referred to Catholicism as "one of his sources of wisdom". That better captures my relationship with Christianity that's been unfolding over the last few months.

Making sure that intergenerational spiritual trauma stops as much as possible with me is really important. I had mistakenly thought that meant abandoning Christianity all together, that it was the problem. Which in hindsight, is fucking wild - I hugely fucked up there. There's nothing stopping me from just enacting the harm I learned in the context of Christianity in a different context, a Pagan context. It doesn't get to the root of the issue. At the end of the day, I just want to be sure I do not use my religion, any religion, to further the harms of structural inequality and colonial oppression. That's the goal.

In reading around about this, I've come to feel pretty strongly that one of the best ways to work toward that is to strive toward animism. Animism has been a great antidote to the spiritual entitlement that colonial religions cultivate (including white paganism). Animism also builds a relational spirituality rather than a goal/individual centered one. White paganism isn't inherently animistic since white culture teaches values that undermine quality relationships - individualism, competitiveness, and seeking domination of some fashion in order to feel safe. An animistic lens requires you unlearn those values and cultivate new ones - mutuality, respect, and accountability.

So all this is to say that given my current understanding, I think trying to build a practice out of New Age concepts while trying to avoid appropriation sounds impossible and hellish. I also think it doesn't deal with the work that needs done. I'm choosing to take an animist lens to the living traditions I do have to see if that's a better space for both my spirituality and my evolving understand of decolonizing to grow in.

People will rightly question my use of the term "shadow work" given this perspective. Shadow work is a problematic term for a lot of different reasons that are beyond the scope of this piece.  Where I'm at with it right now is that most western religious traditions seem to have some understanding of what we might call shadow work which points to it being important and useful. However they all used different terms given their contexts so I'm still unsure of what term might be the most appropriate given where I'm at. So for right now, you might see me use it less in the title or body of work I write from here on out, but I still might use it as a tag to make it findable. There's a good shot this doesn't go far enough and I'm not sold on this approach. Just know it's something I'm trying to figure out.

So that's where I'm at right now. I think white pagans really need to be more serious about animism at minimum and hopefully also looking at the role living religious traditions play in their current practice as well. I think white pagans' unhealed reactivity around Christianity too often serves as a justification for spiritual appropriation and furthering colonial harm. Changes are definitely needed. What that looks like in practice for individuals will likely vary a ton. I'd love to hear from other folks doing work in this vein. What's worked for you so far? What hasn't? For the general energy, he is dealing with some things that are making him have a blockage in his life. Work looks like is going pretty good, maybe some traveling for a schedule, but finance-wise there is something I can ping point out, personally feel like it's something related to the company.

Someone close to him has broken his trust and he is letting go, he is mature about not keeping them in his life, even if that really hurt him. Any projects in the future are unsure, he may have to fight to get more opportunities.

He needs to go through a change but he is resisting it. In the workplace and in his general life, there are misunderstandings, there are a lot of things left unsaid, and it causes trouble in the general harmony. He needs to find balance, he is reaching a limit. Unfortunately, I feel like in the future we would hear of him, a scandal or gossip.

He is closing a chapter in his life. Right now he is full of inspiration about something regarding work or a project he may be working on but needs to be careful to whom he trusts with his money.

The last part of the reading is about something relating to the future, he really needs to pay attention to who he decides to make deals with because a lot of cards throughout the reading indicate a possible scam...

Right now there is a lot going on, I think he has a lot on his plate, he needs to make some decisions and be honest. It looks like there is some injustice in the workplace or he is feeling like things are not fair, which is making him a little pessimistic and feeling left behind. It feels like he is the emotional support of the group or for some of the members at this moment, but internally he is struggling, he is feeling lonely and really keeping with himself. Hi! This is a very loaded question considering everything that happened, but it's my civic duty as a ot7 monbebe stan to bring to you the current energy around Wonho and Monsta X's friendships.

Please be warned that this is not a fluffy reading where I just say "they're brothers and they love each other." As much as I'd like that to be true as a monbebe, we actually get into some deeper issues and feelings here, and this reading is being kept very realistic, even if we as fans might not want to hear that there are negative feelings.

But with that said, let's get into it! In the center, we have how Monsta X as a whole see Wonho (left), and how Wonho sees Monsta X as a whole (right). The top row is Wonho's friendships with Shownu, Minhyuk and Kihyun, and the bottom row is his friendships with Hyungwon, Jooheon and IM.

So, we start with how Monsta X as a whole view Wonho currently, and we have the Camel, the Eight of Cups, and the Seven of Swords. They, as a group, admire the fact that Wonho really knows himself, and that he had the courage to do what he needed to do, and has been able to hold his own as a solo artist. He think it's really cool how he's sort of walking his own path and challenges the norms of being an idol and coming back from a scandal and doing the type of music and things he wants to do. However, they still hold in the back of their mind that he walked away. They know why he did it, and they know that he thought it was for his best interest, and that it was probably for their best interest as a group too. But at the end of the day, he still walked away, and there are some negative feelings that they harbor from that, which is totally understandable.

Next, we have how Wonho sees Monsta X as a whole, and we have the Elk, Temperance and the reversed Fairy Godpanda. He appreciates the fact that they still support him and are there for him, even after everything that happened, and I can see that their support is something that's really really important to him. However, he has a lot of mixed feelings when it comes to the group, and once again, that's totally understandable considering everything that happened. He sees them as a strong unit, and sometimes I think he wonders if they're doing better without him, and that leads him down a negative thought path that he doesn't really like. But he still holds all of his positive memories with Monsta X very fondly in his heart, and he wouldn't replace them for the world.

Now, we have Shownu and Wonho's friendship, and for that we got the King of Cups, Judgment and the Five of Pentacles. They still hold a lot of love for each other, and as the leader, Shownu understands why Wonho did what he did, and realizes that he especially did it to look out for Shownu once his name started getting dragged through the mud as well. Shownu is very very supportive on Wonho, and Wonho is the same back to him. He understands that Wonho had pure intentions, even if he went about things the wrong way, and I think he sees that Wonho walking away has changed both of them, and their relationship, for the better, and the whole situation caused them both to grow personally apart more than they could've grown together. He admires Wonho and his patience and resilience in still striving to create music even after everything that happened, and that's why he'll always support Wonho's solo music.

Next, we have Minhyuk and Wonho's friendship, and for that we have the reversed Six of Cups, the Tower, and the Hierophant. Wonho walking away was a big event in their friendship, and it really hasn't ever been totally the same since. Minhyuk is definitely one of the members who didn't understand Wonho's reasoning as much as someone like Shownu did, so I can see that their friendship was definitely fractured for a time, but at the end of the day, Minhyuk was able to forgive Wonho for what he did, and also forgive himself for not being able to be enough of a support system that Wonho felt like he needed to do that. At this point, their relationship is different, but it's healed, and they learn a lot from each other, and I think they come to each other for advice when they need it.

Next, we have Kihyun and Wonho's friendship, and for this we have the Four of Cups, the reversed Eight of Wands, and the Six of Swords. This one is really interesting to me, because it seems like Kihyun was actually the member who was the most hurt by Wonho leaving. We know that they were close, and so sometimes it's the people closest to us that we hurt with our actions. I can see that Kihyun felt like Wonho was so focused on the rumors and on being self sacrificing that he didn't realize that Monsta X was there for him, and I think he's held resentment against Wonho for not letting the members be there for him and try to get through the situation together. Their friendship was severely damaged by Wonho leaving, and I think it was something that kind of left them not knowing how to approach each other. I can see that they're working through everything that happened and working to rebuild their friendship, but it's not something that's so simple. There's trauma and pain that they have to talk through together before they can really get their friendship back to a good place, but they are working on it and working to get to a better place together.

Next, we have Hyungwon and Wonho's friendship, and the cards we have for that are the reversed Three of Cups, the reversed Sun, and reversed Devil. This is another case of the fact that Wonho's actions hurt the ones he was closest to the most. I can see that most of all, Hyungwon was hurt that Wonho decided to leave the group without consulting anyone, and he felt left out. I can see that after that, it was hard for Hyungwon to focus on Monsta X, and that he kinda felt disconnected from the group because of the negative energy surrounding it all. There was definitely a need for them to make amends and talk things through, and even tho they have, I can see that there's still some repairs that have to be made to their relationship. Despite everything, I think there are still feelings of betrayal that Hyungwon has, and it hasn't been so easy for them to move past that.

Next, we have Jooheon and Wonho's friendship, and for them we got the Five of Pentacles, the reversed King of Pentacles, and the reversed Queen of Wands. I think Jooheon definitely worried about Wonho feeling ostracized and left out when it came to the group and moving on without him, so I think he was one of the members who stayed in touch with Wonho the most to make sure he was ok and check up on him. I think they cleared their grievances out pretty quickly and were able to move forward a little easier than some of the members. He also understood that Wonho needed to take time away partially to get his mind right again after all of the malicious rumors targeting him, so I don't think he ever took him leaving as personally as some of the other members might've. He didn't think it would've been right for Wonho to stay if he didn't feel like it was right anymore, so he admired Wonho for making the choice that was right for him at the time, and I think that actually inspired Jooheon to have the courage to take HIS hiatus when he was feeling anxious and needed to get himself centered again, too. I think their relationship is definitely one of the better ones of the group, and I think they both talked each other through their hiatuses and hard times together.

Last but not least, we have the friendship between Changkyun and Wonho, and we got the Ace of Cups, the reverse Six of Swords, and the Nine of Pentacles. Interestingly enough, even tho they weren't the closest while Wonho was in Monsta X, I think their relationship is actually better than ever now. Changkyun is someone who's very resistant to change, so I can see that he didn't want to accept that Wonho left, and that that was baggage that they both carried into their friendship for a while. But I can see that at some point, they decided to have a fresh start, and that since that happened, they've been able to thrive as friends in a way that they never really were able to before. Wonho leaving was actually the best thing for their friendship, and they've been able to transition into this new phase in their relationship with relative ease, and their relationship has been one of success and mutual support of each other.
