A Zen Thanksgiving
Good morning my dear friends, and what's up with that title many of you are probably asking? Well since you asked nicely. 😂 I'm having a most enjoyable albeit untraditional Thanksgiving morning, and I hope everyone else is having a lovely day whether you're celebrating Thanksgiving, Thursday or both. Okay, back to my morning. I'm playing with my friends on Tumblr, have done a little meditation and even took a brief yet pleasant walk around my neighborhood. And now, in the category of radical multitasking, I've been watching videos on YouTube of Surfing, Tai Chi and Alan Watts. I just finished The Illusion Of Words - Alan Watts On The Zen Game, and he mentioned that poetry was the perfect language for Zen since it says what cannot be said. And now in the shocking category of blending Thanksgiving, Eclectic and Coincidence (if you believe in coincidences), the video reminded me that I have a poem titled Zen Poet. Head explodes LOL. I'll be sharing that in a little while, but for now, seeing as I've been a bit long winded already, let's just go for the big finish. If no one's told you yet today, let me be the first to say... I love you, Mike (AKA Mikey Mike or Mikey) 😍

Today we have gathered and we see that the cycles of life continue. We have been given the duty to live in balance and harmony with each other and all living things. So now, we bring our minds together as one as we give greetings and thanks to each other as people.
We are all thankful to our Mother, the Earth, for she gives us all that we need for life. She supports our feet as we walk about upon her. It gives us joy that she continues to care for us as she has from the beginning of time.
we are one
We give thanks to all the Waters of the world for quenching our thirst and providing us with strength. Water is life.
we are one
As far as the eye can see, the Plants grow, working many wonders. They sustain many life forms. We give thanks and look forward to seeing Plant life for many generations to come.
we are one
We send greetings and thanks to all the Animal life in the world. They have many things to teach us. We see them near our homes and in the deep forests. We are glad they are still here and we hope that it will always be so.
we are one
We are all thankful to the powers we know as the Four Winds. We hear their voices in the moving air as they refresh us and purify the air we breathe. They help us to bring the change of seasons. From the four directions they come, bringing us messages and giving us strength.
we are one
We now send greetings and thanks to our eldest Brother, the Sun. Each day without fail he travels the sky from east to west, bringing the light of a new day. He is the source of all the fires of life.
we are one
We give thanks to our oldest Grandmother, the Moon, who lights the night-time sky. She is the leader of woman all over the world, and she governs the movement of the ocean tides. By her changing face we measure time, and it is the Moon who watches over the arrival of children here on Earth.
we are one
We give thanks to the Stars who are spread across the sky like jewelry. We see them in the night, helping the Moon to light the darkness and bringing dew to the gardens and growing things. When we travel at night, they guide us home.
we are one
We gather our minds to greet and thank the enlightened Teachers who have come to help throughout the ages. When we forget how to live in harmony, they remind us of the way we were instructed to live as people.
we are one
Now we turn our thoughts to the gifts of Creation. Everything we need to live a good life is here on this Mother Earth. For all the love that is still around us, we gather our minds together as one and send our choicest words of greetings and thanks to the Creator, or Great Spirit.
we are one

A letter to John's cousin Leila, dated January 1979
Thank you to @javelinbk's post for bringin my attention to this letter :)
I'm sure I made some mistakes in transcribing this, so if someone can figure out the bits I'm unsure about I'd be happy to edit them in! (EDIT: thank you to @ohblahdo and @the-bluebird-you-need for much needed corrections!) I also tried to keep it as close to his actual writing as possible but sometimes I can't tell if he misspellt things or if it's just hard to read. I bolded what he underlined.
FULL TRANSCRIPTION:
Dear Leila,
it's snowing;– outside the window in Central Park – I can see the Plaza Hotel across the trees – it's beautiful. I'm exhausted (still) after Xmas/New Year – they even have a thing called Thanksgiving a few weeks before Xmas (by the way I'm a Pagan – a zen Pagan to be precise – but that's another story!)
It looks a[s] if we got our wires crossed on the 'newspaper story' – ie. Mimi (who else!) told me you were upset about something I said (supposed to have said) in the newspaper about myself – anyway enough of that – it's obviously nothing – so let's forget that which we can't remember anyway!
I don't know why you were surprised by what I wrote you about your 'Russian Affair' – i thought I'd make it clear to you that the words were from a TAROT CARD READER – ie: I told him your story/birthdate etc – the words came through him – I just wrote down his 'prediction' (whatever) re:your situation! See? – so don't shoot the bearer of news!!
Sean is a beautiful wise 3 yr old (born Oct 9! – in case you didn't know) – what a handfull [sic] one is – I don't know how you manage all yours – well done! The fact that they have all their limbs + faculties is an accomplishment in itself!
Sounds like a good idea about giving yourself some time to 'play'! – 8 days doesn't sound like you're turned Gypsy 'tho'! – by the way –
– You better give us a fair warning if you're seeing [?] about 'popping over' here – ie: make sure I'm here – eg. tomorrow we leave (Yoko + me) for ..... Cairo, Egypt (ring a bell?!) – via Geneva – on a business trip – for about a week – I wish we could dig up some of your fathers relatives – do you know anyone there? an Uncle/Aunt?
– I'll send you a postcard –
I'm 40 next year – I hope life begins – ie. I'd like a little less 'trouble' and more – what? I don't know – I sent Stan [Leila's brother, John's cousin] a Xmas card (up north) – I don't know what it is with him – is he resentfull [sic] of me because I'm not dumb or what?! I guess he was always jealous of you – anyway I still think it's pretty mean of him – I heard a lot from him when he was piss poor – I shouldn't be surprised after all the bastards I've met these last 40 yrs or so
– if your [sic] ever in NRH Wales – look [?] up Julian – he's in Ruthin School – poor sod –
I though of you a lot this Xmas – the cottage – the record player – 'good ship lollipop' – 'I found my love on TREASURE ISLAND' – the OWL(s)? the shadows on the ceiling as the cars went by at night – putting up the paper-chains – even Norman turns into Santa Klaus in my memory! (muttering in the chair by the fire)
enough of that too!
Lots of love, to all of you, I'm sure we'll see each other v. soon – somewhere or other – I'm almost scared to go to England, 'cos I know it would be the last time I saw Mimi – I'm a coward about goodbyes...
Have a good year Keep healthy John 8^) xxx
Love from Sean & Yoko xx

January Atlanta Events Round Up
AUTHOR: ARTSY CHOW ROAMER
JANUARY
ATLANTA EVENTS ROUND UP
As folks recover from the long run of holidays from Thanksgiving to New Years, they often think of January as the month of doing nothing. That would be a mistake if living in or around Atlanta, as there are many things to do that can keep that holiday vibe alive for you and yours. Here’s a round up of my favorites.
youtube
MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. DAY
This years Martin Luther King Jr. holiday happens to fall on Inauguration Day. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate the former and ignore the latter! Atlanta plans a lot of activities around Dr. King’s day beginning with the parade and church services at Ebenezer Baptist; the church where he was both baptized and euologized. The Atlanta History Center keeps a calendar of events that will occur which include a special celebration this year for the women involved in advocating for civil rights.
You can participate in civil rights themed trivia, kids activities, specially curated exhibits, panel discussions and more at the center on family events day January 18th. You can also find places to volunteer for the weekend into Monday’s holiday on the 20th which is what the day is really all about; giving back and helping others less fortunate.
Don’t forget to tune in to Ebenezer’s memorial service at 10:00 AM on the 20th. The many speakers and music never fail to lift the spirits and remind us how important Dr. King’s own words were before his assassination in 1968. The Interfaith Children’s Movement will also be participating in the annual Atlanta parade for the holiday ending with a Have a Heart Legislative Writing Party prioritizing children’s well-being in Georgia.
WILDWOOD AGLOW AT FERNBANK
Included with after-hours museum admission, WildWoods: AGLOW is “a multi-sensory experience that immerses visitors into the mesmerizing wonders of nature” through the real environment and glowing displays that are uniquely curated to highlight the native plants within WildWoods. Original music and zen-like artistic compositions create a magical exprience for children and adults alike. New this year will be large dandelions, fluttering dragonflies, swarming bats and more along the boardwalk. Tickets available for $23.95 and up for non-members-less if already a member.
GARDEN LIGHTS & HOLIDAY TRAINS
Garden Lights and Holiday Trains are two don’t miss annual events at The Atlanta Botanical Gardens for both family and fun date nights through January 12th. The stunning light show features millions of colored LED lights strung amid the trees, plants and sculptural artworks of the gardens with timed tickets that allow you to purchase and plan your visit on the specific day and time of your choice. Don’t miss the Tunnel of Lights, Alice in Wonderland and dancing to the Orchestral Orbs!
Gotta a model train addict in your family? Everyone seems to and the holidays are the best time to enjoy setting up and running your own cars after going to get some ideas and inspiration from the gardens. Presented by Norfolk Southern, kids and adults alike will be enchanted by the sites and sounds of the magical set up with stations, lights, Santa’s Workshop, candy adorned homes and more. Don’t forget to grab your tickets on a non-rainy day as the tracks must be dry! All aboard!

NATIONAL College Football PlayofF Championship at Mercedes-Benz Stadium
The City of Atlanta has an entire weekend of events planned around the 2025 College Football Playoff which is a National Championship game. More than 100,000 residents as well as visitors from across the country are expected to attend at the beautiful Mercedes Benz stadium on January 20th and you don’t have to have tickets to the game to be included in all the fun events leading up to it.
The celebration will get started Saturday, January 18th, with the opening of Playoff Fan Central at the Georgia World Congress Center in downtown Atlanta. The free family-friendly interactive experience will include games, clinics, pep rallies, special guest appearances, autograph signings and exhibits celebrating college football and its history.
Downtown Atlanta will again host one of the largest traveling music festivals which has featured top talent in the past like Pitbull, Flo Rida, Doja Cat, Usher, Lenny Kravitz, John Mellencamp, Darius Rucker and more. Sunday morning will be the 5 and 10K running events with participants receiving medals and T-shirts. Sunday evening, the Georgia Aquarium will play host to some of the best chefs in town to bring all attendees one of the most elevated and unique local cuisine experiences on offer. Get your game on football fans!
COCKTAILS & BITES ON THE BELTLINE
Calling all foodies! Atlanta Food Tours is known for the best experiences in town whether it’s touring the Ponce City Market for a little taste in food, art and history, building your own burgers or craft cocktails and bites around the Beltline. You will eat like a local while supporting the local businesses with the fun thrown in for free. I personally love the Beltline tour for $120 that lasts two hours, gives you a good mile of walking, three craft cock or mocktails with bites included that begins at Bazati. Check out their website to customize your own group tour if you prefer. Cheers!
THE TWO MARTINS AT THE FOX
I suppose that working together on their Hulu series, Only Murders in the Building, just isn’t enough for the two Martins so they will be bringing their act to the Fox Theatre January 24th. “The Dukes of Funnytown” will be live and on stage as of 8:00 PM with doors opening at 7:00. Go early as you’ll want to grab yourself some drinks and take in the beauty of the Fox which is always lovely but especially so at the holidays. Expect some music from The Steep Canyon Rangers and a guest spot for Jeff Babko who I suspect will be a great sidekick for the two guys that can still make you laugh til your sides hurt! Tickets start at $80.00.

Giants: Art from the Dean Collection of Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys
The High Museum is playing host to a giant of a collection brought to you by Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys, otherwise known as the Deans. Both have always been collectors of sorts but since their marriage, have become collectors of note known for their knowledge, taste and spirit assembling a world-class collection of paintings, sculpture and photography that exemplifies their lived ethos of “artists supporting artists”.
youtube
The exhibition illuminates the renown and impact of legendary preminent “giants” such as Barkley L. Hendricks, Esther Mahlangu, and Gordon Parks as well as contemporary modern Black creatives like Hank Willis Thomas, Qualeasha Wood, Deana Lawson, Mickalene Thomas, Amy Sherald and Titus Kaphar. It also highlights their earlier acquisitions of BMX bikes, musical albums and equipment. To the Deans, all artists are “giants” as they continue to add to the wonderful collection you will see only a small portion of during its run through January 19th at the High. Don’t miss it!
sKATE THE STATION
Open until January 20th, Skate the Station at Atlantic Station presents your chance to ice skate in the great outdoors and pretend you are doing it in New York City (or at least that’s what I like to do)! You can spend a little of that Christmas money you got on the shop sales and grab yourself a nice dinner and hot drinks after you are done. Normal hours are 4:00 PM to 11:00 PM and there will be two special evening skates from 6-9:00 PM on January 7th (Musical Night) and January 14th (Great Gatsby Night). No walk-ups allowed so get your tickets ahead of time please!
youtube
CONCLUSIONS
As you can see, there are still plenty of fun events to do in and around Atlanta to keep the holiday vibe alive for January. Most are family friendly and many would be great date night experiences as well. Grab the kids, your better half or just a great group of friends and get your tickets now for any of these upcoming events so ya got something to look forward to after the ball drops and you’ve made your resolution list!
Hey, don’t be a stranger! Let me hear from you if you got something you want to add to the list of January fun things to do! Until next time…
Cheers,

What’s the hardest decision you’ve ever had to make? Why? It was thanksgiving mine was good how was yours? Anyway onto the question of the day… Probably cutting out toxic people ruining my happiness and zen. Being a people person cutting out people is hard because I love hard and I am empathetic and sympathetic to a major default.

Slow down and get more out of this busy season Writer: Jill Emanuele, PhD Clinical Expert: Jill Emanuele, PhD As soon as the Halloween costumes have been tucked away, and the candy is disappearing, suddenly we realize that the holidays are coming….FAST. Thoughts of presents, turkeys, cards, relatives, parties, and shopping begin to dizzyingly swirl in our heads. And so the holiday rush begins, and we often find ourselves becoming champion multitaskers. But in the rush to get everything accomplished, we often lose our connection with the present moment — how we feel, what we’re thinking. We become so future-focused that we sometimes miss out on the little things that make life beautiful as it is — a compliment from a stranger, a warm smile from a child, a beautiful sunset. And we find ourselves pausing on Thanksgiving Day to remind ourselves of what we are thankful for, when in fact the reminders are there each and every day for the noticing. Contrary to common belief, one effective way to cope with the holiday madness is to SLOW DOWN and take a little time each day to cultivate and practice mindfulness. Perhaps you’ve heard about this concept, which is rooted in Zen Buddhism, and has recently become more popular in Western society. Research has demonstrated that practicing mindfulness is associated with improvements in well-being, physical and mental health, relationship satisfaction, and attentional focus. In addition, the practice of mindfulness has been shown to help reduce stress and associated negative emotions such as anxiety and sadness. So, what is mindfulness? Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD, internationally known for his work in bringing mindfulness into Western medicine and society, defines the concept as “awareness, cultivated by paying attention in a sustained, particular way: on purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgmentally”. When we practice mindfulness, we are focusing our full attention on the moment as it is, letting go of the past and future-directed thoughts, and allowing all of our senses to experience this moment, right now. You may be asking, “Okay, so on a practical level, how can I be mindful?” In reality, there are infinite opportunities to practice mindfulness during each day. Here are some suggestions to get started: - Find a quiet place for just a few minutes (I sometimes recommend the bathroom, as for some people this is the only quiet spot!). Get yourself into a comfortable sitting position with your feet flat on the floor. Close your eyes and focus on your breathing only. Do this for a few minutes. Listen to the sound of your breath and notice how your body feels during this time. When thoughts of other moments come racing into your mind, acknowledge them and let them go by as if they are on a conveyor belt, and refocus your attention on your breath again. Do this over and over. - Spend a few minutes each day writing down five things you are thankful for that day. - When you are walking outside, focus on one of your senses. For example, for vision, notice the colors of objects around you or for hearing, listen to the sounds around you and label them nonjudgmentally (eg “That building is gray,” or “I hear a horn honking”). - Get the kids involved! One favorite thing I like to recommend is good old fashioned bubble blowing. Make a game out of it and instruct them (and yourself) to silently watch the bubbles float around the room. Resist the urge to pop the bubbles and see where they go. By taking a few minutes each day to be mindful, perhaps even more than once a day, we can give ourselves the space to get in touch with ourselves, to fully experience the meaningful moments that often pass us by, and to take time to practice gratitude for what we have in our lives. This way, by the time Thanksgiving arrives, we will not be scrambling to think about what we are thankful for! Instead, we can experience gratitude daily, reduce our stress, and be more in touch with the little things that make all the difference. #James Donaldson notes:Welcome to the “next chapter” of my life… being a voice and an advocate for #mentalhealthawarenessandsuicideprevention, especially pertaining to our younger generation of students and student-athletes.Getting men to speak up and reach out for help and assistance is one of my passions. Us men need to not suffer in silence or drown our sorrows in alcohol, hang out at bars and strip joints, or get involved with drug use.Having gone through a recent bout of #depression and #suicidalthoughts myself, I realize now, that I can make a huge difference in the lives of so many by sharing my story, and by sharing various resources I come across as I work in this space. #http://bit.ly/JamesMentalHealthArticleFind out more about the work I do on my 501c3 non-profit foundationwebsite www.yourgiftoflife.org Order your copy of James Donaldson's latest book,#CelebratingYourGiftofLife: From The Verge of Suicide to a Life of Purpose and Joy www.celebratingyourgiftoflife.com Link for 40 Habits Signupbit.ly/40HabitsofMentalHealth If you'd like to follow and receive my daily blog in to your inbox, just click on it with Follow It. 03.02. 22:33 | Ilo Pisara vs Zen Lions 4 - 3
Ladies and gentlemen, gather 'round as I regale you with the tale of Ilo Pisara's latest hockey odyssey—a nail-biter that ended in a 4-3 victory over the Zen Lions. It was an affair more tense than my grandmother’s knitting. First off, Teppo Winnipeg—our puck-moving defenseman who apparently thought he was playing a game of "catch me if you can" with the opposing team. With two goals and an assist, he danced around them like they were traffic cones at a driving school test—not bad for someone whose defensive rating suggests he might sometimes forget which net is ours. Then there's Konsta Terde, our playmaker on left wing who decided to give away pucks (12 giveaways!) like they were flyers for a lost cat. Yet somehow, amidst this philanthropy spree, he nets one goal and bags an assist—including the game-winner! Talk about failing upwards. And let’s not overlook Yuri Tarde—the center whose faceoff percentage makes it seem like winning draws is as foreign to him as dieting is to me after Thanksgiving. Still manages three points though; go figure! In conclusion: another win chalked up by sheer talent—or perhaps sheer luck? Either way, we're skating forward... preferably towards victories less reminiscent of heart attack-inducing thrillers.
