7 Successful Female Artists of the 16th Century
It is known that much of the art world was male-dominated in the past, especially so during the Renaissance in Western society. Women were forbidden to be taught any formal art training, primarily as it was considered immodest for them to study the nude form - a fundamental basis in artistic learning. Regardless of this, women throughout history found ways to gain recognition for their paintings. Here I have compiled a short list of women that worked as artists during the 1500′s. These women were often privately taught, or even self-taught, and gained recognition during their careers.
St. Catherine's Vision of Christ, by Plautilla Nelli (1524-1588)
Plautilla Nelli
Plautilla Nelli was an impressive woman and a fitting one to begin the list with. Born into a wealthy family, she became a nun in her teenage years, and was a self-taught painter. She collaborated with many well-known artists of her day, and ran a studio within her convent.
Because of Nelli’s obvious religious connections, her paintings depict devout scenes of the bible. She used her devotion to painting religious settings as a way to promote to other devout women against committing the capital sin of sloth. As seen above, she frequently represented Saint Catherine in her works - the patron of her convent.
Self Portrait, by Catharina van Hemessen (1528-c. 1565)
Catharina van Hemessen
Catharina van Hemessen was trained by her father, Jan Sanders van Hemessen (c. 1500-c. 1566), a successful Flemish artist. For many female artists during the Renaissance, they too had existing ties to the arts through their fathers or close family members.
Catharina van Hemessen is mostly identified for her portraiture, and is considered to be the first artist to have created a self-portrait with the artist seated at an easel. It is this work by her that is her most known. She was very accomplished in her career, gaining important wealthy patrons such as Mary of Hungary (1505-1558).
The Chess Game, by Sofonisba Anguissola (c. 1535-1625)
Sofonisba Anguissola
Born into a large noble family, Anguissola received a very well-rounded education, to be the most important was arguably in the fine arts. She was even included into an apprenticeship, almost unheard of for women at that time. There was also a friendship that sparked between her and Michelangelo (1475-1564) while in Rome. Michelangelo was not blind to her talent and would often send her his own drawings, with her sending him critique in return.
Anguissola became so popular that she was eventually employed by royalty, earning the title of lady-in-waiting as she tutored Queen Consort Elisabeth of Valois (1545-1568) in the ways of art, and became the official court painter to the Spanish King, Philip II of Spain (1527-1598).
Travelling to many places in her lifetime, Anguissola’s style of painting often changed with her environment - such as becoming more formal whilst in the care of royalty. At the old age of 93, Sofonisba Anguissola passed away a wealthy and famous artist.
Self-Portrait, by Lucia Anguissola (c. 1536-c. 1565)
Lucia Anguissola
Lucia Anguissola was one of the younger sisters to the aforementioned Sofonisba. It was her artistic older sister that taught her in the ways of fine art, and their styles were similar. Although she was mentioned to have been considered the most talented of the two, she never had the opportunity to experience the same level of recognition as her sister, as she died young.
Unfortunately there is little information in reference to Lucia Anguissola, all we can really do is admire the talent and hard work put into her known created work.
Madonna and Child, by Barbara Longhi (1552-1638)
Barbara Longhi
Similar to that of Catharina van Hemessen, Barbara Longhi was also introduced to art through her father. She collaborated with her father, Luca Longhi (1507-1580), a Mannerist painter, as well as her older brother.
Barbara Longhi was recognized for her talent and received frequent commissions. Many of her works, however, are lost or unknown today. Due to the influence from her father, many of artworks attributed to him could in fact belong to Barbara.
Primarily known for her talent in portraiture, Longhi did also paint religious works during her lifetime. These often focused on the subjects of those involved, emphasizing their importance by nullifying the backgrounds.
Portrait of a Lady with a Lap Dog, by Lavinia Fontana (1552-1614)
Lavinia Fontana
Lavinia Fontana was a woman that flipped gender expectations in a time when deviating from the traditional was unheard of. She was born to a family with a painter, her father Prospero Fontana (1512-1597). Lavinia Fontana’s talent was recognized early on. She became sought-after for the portraits she created of nobles, yet developed her skills in other areas of painting - even to being commissioned by the Vatican due to her religious works.
She later married, and had many children, yet this did not prevent her from obtaining a fruitful career. Her husband was supportive of her work, and they created a strong partnership where Fontana took the role as breadwinner.
It is surprising that Fontana was so well accepted by the Church due to the controversy surrounding her. She often painted the nude female form, suggesting that she used live models to do so. This would have caused a scandal and blackened her reputation. This repeatedly caused problems for female artists.
Judith with the Head of Holophernes, by Fede Galizia (c. 1578-c. 1630)
Fede Galizia
Fede Galizia was born into an artistic family, her father, Nunzio Galizia, was a miniaturist. More than likely thanks to training from her father, Fede Galizia had an exceptional eye for detail and became an accomplished artist early in her life. She was already well within the business of commissions by the age of eighteen.
While she was an adept artist in portraiture and had created alter pieces, it is her still life works which hold most of the attention. The make up the majority of her surviving artworks. She has been regarded as a pioneer of this genre, which was becoming incredibly popular in Italy during this time.

The Complexities Surrounding Kings, Statesmen & Royals: Trying to make sense of their actions
Some legends are told. Some become famous or infamous but celebrity is as celebrity does. Love them or hate them, they are all changed history -for better or for worse (depending on how you view them).
Henry VIII’s decision to break away from the Catholic Church not only changed English history, but world history as well. Equally so, his father-in-law’s decision to remarry shortly after Isabella died, changed the lives of those around him, especially his favorite and youngest daughter, Katharine of Aragon.
As with every historical figure, I do not need to condone or justify their actions. Readers can do that on their own. But I and many others on this page do feel the need to show them in their proper context.
Henry VIII needed a male heir and as many historians have pointed out in their respective books and documentaries, his descent into madness is the product of various factors. For one two injuries to the head, possible blood type, and the constant reminder that there were others with (arguably) more right to wear the Confessor’s crown and that him and his descendants. And then there is his country to think about. The memory of the wars of the roses was still fresh on everyone’s minds and people were not confident of entrusting the nation to a woman.
This will appear misogynistic to some but this was the 16th century and we cannot apply 21st century standards to this era. The last time that England had come close to having a female King, chaos ensued. Matilda was given oaths of fealty by her father’s barons but after he died they stabbed her in the back and decided to cast their lot with her cousin Stephen instead. Stephen and his wife (also named Matilda but let’s call her ‘Maud’ for the sake of avoiding any confusion) both descended from William the Conqueror so convincing them that the crown belonged to them and their son Eustace wasn’t that hard. But Matilda had her way in the end -although not in the way she would have initially preferred. After Stephen’s wife and son died, he recognized Matilda’s son, Henry FitzEmpress as his heir. He became the first King of the Plantagenet dynasty, a dynasty that ruled England for more than 300 years.
For this reason and other reasons that have already been cited, Henry could not afford to leave his country in the hands of his daughter, a daughter he boasted off proudly to his ambassadors.
But make no mistake though. Henry did have his flaws and these were a product of his rearing and his own doing. Robert Hutchinson who’s often hostile to Henry makes a good point in the documentary presented by Tracy Borman (author of “Thomas Cromwell” and “Private Life of the Tudors”) that he “had the ego the size of the truck”. In his book “the last days of Henry VIII”, Robert Hutchinson states that Henry’s ego grew larger as he got older and his paranoia also increased. He became suspicious of everyone. As Thomas More told one of his colleagues, when the lion knows his own strength, no man can control him. When Henry got a taste of true power, he realized that nothing and no one could stop him.
The list of flaws and attributes on Ferdinand is easier to point out as it is on other kings since they are less controversial than His Majesty, the first head of the Anglican Church. Ferdinand II of Aragon, spouse of Isabella I of Castile, was a caring father who was willing to eliminate the Salic Law so his eldest daughter Isabel could inherit both crowns, thus making his and Isabella’s vision of a united Spain true.
But like every one of our subjects, he was a monarch of his era and once he got a taste of power he was unwilling to let it go. This does not mean that he stopped caring about his daughters or his wife. He always maintained his love for Isabella, but as someone who had won many battles and was hailed as a consummate politician and astute king, he believed he would rule the kingdom of Castile better than his surviving older daughter Juana. Juana herself had asked him for help after her husband died. Ferdinand took advantage of this and the rest as they say is history.
But what about Catalina? Some of you might still be thinking that his treatment of his so called favorite daughter harsh and irresponsible, further proof that he was a dick and you might be right but once again I have to remind you that this was 16th century politics and royal families had to deal with their struggles differently.
Ferdinand was embroiled in another civil war at the time that could reach chaotic proportions like the one between his wife and “La Beltraneja” three decades prior. As a result, he could not do much for her but this did not stop him from looking for ways to get her out of her predicament, even if for a short while. Ferdinand turned Katharine into the first female royal ambassador and through this new position, Katharine fare a little better. Being her parents’ daughter, Katharine understood that this was something that also benefited the two of them as she would be her father’s eyes and ears and that if he continued to score points against her sister and her husband, she could have a better chance convincing Henry VII to honor his promise and marry her to his remaining crown heir.
Thomas Wolsey is another figure of contentment. When I was doing this I was thinking of putting Thomas Cromwell but I opted for Wolsey instead because there have been enough posts about the King’s most hated secretary and right-hand man. There are not enough about Wolsey though and that is because Wolsey is easier to dismiss or hate. The man was a conniving, ambitious, heartless man who was a natural enemy of Henry’s true love, Anne Boleyn. He was simply awful.
^That’s how many history buffs generally view him as but the truth is far more complicated than that. Unlike his aristocratic contemporaries, he could not afford to get out of a situation that easily. He was a servant of the Catholic Church but bound to Henry VIII first. He was kept under a close watch and more than everybody he knew how easy it would be to anger his master. He had to keep his favor no matter what -and to his credit he did try. But there was so much that he could do. He could not serve both masters adequately and when Henry realized that he would not get him what he wanted, he listened to Wolsey’s enemies who were eager to see someone of low birth who had risen higher than them brought down. Wolsey never made it to his trial. He died. (No, he did not kill himself like “The Tudors” showed. He died due to medical problems and because of the stress he’d been put in.)
He was as everyone said, corrupt and had a lot to answer from but he was not an anomaly in a time where everyone was an opportunist.
Last but not least there are the York brothers. A troublesome lot whose decisions are also seen through 21st century lens but which make sense once we begin to read more about their lives and the events that brought them to the dangerous game of thrones that was started by the Lancasters and their father, Richard Plantagenet, Duke of York.
The legitimacy of the Lancasters had been put into question since Henry IV took the crown from Richard II. Richard II had nominated someone else to be his heir but with his unpopularity growing and Henry of Bolinbroke's popularity surging, his plans were undermined. Deposed and later murdered, Henry's reign put into question his House's legitimacy and right to sit on the English throne. These questions were raised during the Barons' rebellions at the end of his reign but were hushed during his son, Henry V's reign. A major reason for this is because Henry V became a national hero and only someone who was truly suicidal or had delusions of grandeur and no knowledge of how the world worked, would openly denounce or challenge Henry V. But after he died, it became open season again. Henry VI, in the words of many historians and novelists, has been described as a dullard and an utter failure of a monarch and a man.
Men in this era were supposed to fulfill a certain role. He was a scholar like his father, financed universities, painters and other artists, but when it came to war, he shied away from that. A King was meant to be a warrior, a bringer of justice, someone who inspired loyalty in the hearts of his men and fear in the minds of his enemies but Henry VI inspired neither.
After most of France was lost and he agreed to give away part of it after he married Marguerite of Anjou, questions about the House of Lancaster being the rightful dynasty to rule over England began to arise again -this time by none other than his cousin, the Duke of York who was seen as an ideal leader. He possessed qualities that Henry VI did not but he did not make it evident that he sought to be King. It is unlikely that it was his goal from the start but after quarreling with Marguerite over issues like the regency when her husband went into a short catatonic state, and how to deal with the situation in France, and favorites whom he considered were undermining everything the king's father and his late uncles had worked hard to achieve, he was pushed into a corner. He could either continue with his demands and risk being declared a traitor or do the unthinkable to survive.
He obviously chose the latter. When Marguerite of Anjou heard that Henry VI had disinherited her son in Richard and his sons' favor, she became angry and the rest as they say is history.
If Richard had qualities Henry VI did not, his older surviving son, Edward, Earl of March, had that and more. He was the antithesis of Henry VI. Handsome, tall, a womanizer, and with the stomach for war, he inspired loyalty and fear and after his father died, he set out to avenge him by deposing the king and declaring himself King of England.
Edward IV enjoyed many victories but they came at a cost. The brothers who appeared united under a single banner of the sun of York soon let their jealousy fester until it blossomed into something malignant.
George, swayed by their cousin, the Earl of Warwick, rebelled against Edward IV (twice). He was pardoned and he and his wife were restored to favor once he rejoined his old and younger brother to fight against the Lancastrian threat. The three rid themselves of Henry VI and his only son at long last, leaving only Marguerite of Anjou alive.
Their animosity did not last and once again George began to become suspicious of his brother as Edward IV became suspicious of him and long story short, when George suspected that his wife had been the victim of foul play, he questioned two of his servants and made (what he believed to be secret) terrible statements against his brother. Edward IV did not take this too kindly and had him executed. George was drowned in a butt of malmsey wine.
But the clearest example of brotherly betrayal and envy is that of Richard III. Calculating, generous to his tenants and those around him, he showed no disloyalty to Edward IV until like his namesake and their father, he was once again pushed into a corner by another queen and her family. Richard could either convince the Woodvilles to agree to Edward's will naming him protector or share the regency with them until his nephew Edward V reached the age of majority but this was a fool's dream. No party would ever compromise to such a thing. It was a dog eat dog world and only one could survive. Like the fantasy the wars of the roses has inspired, there was no middle ground here so Richard did the only thing he could think of to survive: He declared himself the one and true king, convincing his allies in parliament to annul his late brother's union with Elizabeth Woodville under the basis he had been previously engaged to Eleanor Butler. This disinherited his nieces and nephews and since his older brother George had been tried as a traitor, his son could not inherit. That only left Richard.
It is easy to see why figures such as these will remain controversial. Their actions are hard to decipher but before jumping on any bandwagon, one has to ask the important questions of what, when, where, and why? The 'why' will never be fully answered but the more one reads about them, the more sense their actions start to make.

Voodoo:
History: Voodoo refers to "a whole assortment of culture elements: personal creeds and practices, a system of ethics transmitted across generations" -Leslie Desmangles, a Haitian professor at Hartford's Trinity College. Voodoo is bases to the combination of spiritual and ancestral cults and healing traditions that the African slaves brought to the new world and on the form of folk Catholicism of Africa and Europe. It 12 is still practice today, and is extremely common the region of Haiti's where it is said that among 8 million people practice it. It is also practiced in places such as the Bahamas, Miami, New York and Montreal. Voodoo emerge in the 16th century among enslaved African's in the Spanish Caribbean colony of Santo Domingo, which became the republic of Haiti in 1804. Voodoo was first practiced by the Africans and Creole slaves feeling the violence of the Haitian Revolution in 1791-1804. The majority of these settled in New Orleans. "A law created in 1685, prohibited the practice of African religions, and required all masters to Christianize their slaves within 8 days of the arrival in Haiti." From the beginning of the 16th century to the end of the 18th century, 800,000 African slaves were brought to Santo Domingo. Catholic missionaries managed little in preaching to slaves beyond giving them the sacrament of baptism. Shortly after, a resilience of the slavery begun, in which Catholic saints and symbols joined spiritual forces with refashioned African traditions. Although African slaves were brought to Haiti and New Orleans about the same time, Voodoo development is quite different in either area. Voodoo in Haiti was used to give strength to the slaves through hardships and suffering. Revolts inspired by practitioners, led the survivors to flee to New Orleans, in which is was greatly suppressed each time if tried to reemerge until the 19th century.
Voodoo neither depends on the teachings of a founder, nor scripture, nor formal concept. There a significant variations around the world. In some parts of Haiti, voodoo is characterized by ancestral relevance. Whereas in other parts of the West Africa, it is cultivated by spirits. The Voodoo place of worship is called a Pantheon, and is divided into to principle rites. These are:
• The Rada: Deities that are 'cool' and serene
• The Petwo: Deities that are 'hot' and feisty
Communication and contact with Voodoo's miste (mysteries) include:
• Prayer
• Praise
• Ablutions
• Offerings
• Spirit possession
• Drum and dance ceremonies
• Divination
• Animal sacrifice
These rituals aims's are to "ensure, establish or reestablish harmony between practitioners and the miste to protect practitioners from sorcery." When bad things happen, consultation of the ritual specialists occurs, who arrange ceremonies to provoke spirit possession, so that communication with the miste can occur in order to discover what the cause of the discord, disease, problem or misfortune is and to determine means of resuming to harmony and healing. Some of the ritual appeasement's that occur for the miste include:
• Artistic communal drum and dance ceremonies
• Animal sacrifices
• Praising and feeding the Iwa
Healing rituals consist of:
• Herbalism
• Ritual baths
• Leaves
• Water
• Song
• Dance
• Blood
• Healing
• Communication the with the sacred

We Are Freestyle Love Supreme, see July 17
Carousel. See July 10
Heroes of the Fourth Turning . See July 18
Below is the day-by-day calendar of “theater openings”* in July, 2020. The big news is the release of “Hamilton” online at Disney Plus — and (less hyped) the “Freestyle Love Supreme” documentary on Hulu — but in truth Lin-Manuel Miranda’s shows are not all that’s exciting this month in the world of online theater — a world in which “online” and “theater” have been synonymous since physical theaters were shut down in March (though there are small signs this may be changing; see July 13). And most of the other shows don’t require subscriptions.
Among the scheduled delights are acclaimed plays by Pulitzer finalist Will Arbery (July 18) and MacArthur “genius” grant winner Samuel D. Hunter (July 11), as well as a new Richard Nelson Apple Family play (July 1) and a new documentary play about frontline medical workers by Jessica Blank and Erik Jensen, creators of The Exonerated and Coal Country (July 8.) There a couple of inventive substitutions for the usual summer theater festivals.
Since so many shows are being put together at the last minute — sometimes not announced until the very day of their launch .. and there also have been fairly frequent last-minute postponements/cancellations/replacements — I will be updating/filling in this preview guide every day, and highlighting the offerings each new day with the link up top. This calendar as of this moment offers a glimpse of what’s in store. Come back day by day for a better look.
Here are some ongoing series that have proven to be reliable sources of art and entertainment.
Four offer live performances (often called readings) of original plays: The Homebound Project Livelabs: One Acts from MCC Play-PerView Viral Monologues from 24 Hour Plays
Play-PerView makes an exception this month to its original plays with what counts as a coup — the live reading of the Pulitzer finalist play “Heroes of the Fourth Turning” (which was supposed to debut last month but was postponed, as were a good number of productions due to the Black Lives Matter protests.)
A fifth offers live readings of classics and recent favorites: Plays in the House, Stars in the House’s twice weekly matinees and now Plays in the House Teen Edition.
Three offer recordings of previous (glorious) stage productions.
Metropolitan Opera National Theatre at Home The Shows Must Go On from Andrew Lloyd Webber
For details about these and other ongoing series, check out my post Where To Get Your Theater Fix Online (which lists, for example, the many long-running online sites such as BroadwayHD and Marquee TV that offer video-capture recordings of shows that were on stage)
All performances are free unless otherwise noted, although almost all hope for a donation (either to themselves or to a designated charity.)
*My definition of theater for the purposes of this calendar generally does not extend to variety shows, cast reunions, galas, panel discussions, documentaries, classes, interviews — all of which are in abundance this month, many worth checking out. My focus here is on creative storytelling in performance. (I make an occasional exception for a high-profile Netathon, involving many theater artists.)
A reminder that this calendar lists when the shows “open.” Some are live and available only for that one performance. Others are available for a week or weeks afterward or longer.
July 1
Die Mommie Die Plays in the House Launches at 2 p.m. Available for four days. In this latest of Stars in the House’s Wednesday matinees, Charles Busch is joined by BD Wong, Willie Garson, Brandon Contreras, Jennifer Cody and Ruth Williamson in this reading of his campy 1999 melodrama Die, Mommie, Die!, a mix of Aeschylus and Bette Davis.Directed and narrated by Carl Andress.
The Book of Job Project Theater of War Launches at 4 p.m. live only The latest from Bryan Doerries terrific community-oriented theater using classic texts (best-known for Antigone in Ferguson), is a dramatic reading of The Book of Job as a catalyst for discussion about injustice during the COVID-19 pandemic. Featuring performances by Jeffrey Wright, Frankie Faison, Kimberly Hebert, David Strathairn, David Zayas, and Public Advocate Jumaane Williams.
And So We Come Forth Apple Family Productions Launches at 7:30 pm. Available for 8 weeks The Apple Family, a dramatic series of plays which first appeared 10 years ago, returned last April with the premiere of a play written especially for Zoom, What Do We Need to Talk About? Now this second Zoom play, And So We Come Forth is set in early July 2020, amidst massive protests against injustice and racism in our country, as well as the anxious easing of a worldwide lockdown.

USA: THE GARIFUNA JAZZ ENSEMBLE FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 16th 7:30pm METRO BAPTIST CHURCH
The Garifuna people and culture were created by one of the most dramatic ethnic mixings in history: two ships with enslaved Africans were shipwrecked off the coast of what is now St. Vincent and the Grenadines toward the end of the 18th Century, and with the help of the indigenous Carib-Indian population, overpowered the Spanish crew and escaped. Later, due to their continued resistance and rebellions against the British, their mixed progeny would then be exiled to the islands off the coast of Honduras. Instead of being isolated and dying off, their culture and oral language prospered and expanded into the Central American countries of Honduras, Belize, Guatemala, and Nicaragua, where they still live.
However, because of terrible socio/political forces and war across the region, many Garifuna became exiles once again, settling in the United States: Los Angeles, Chicago, and the New York tri-state area, particularly in the Bronx. It is here that they remain determined to celebrate their culture and remain true to their heritage. Indeed, it is through their strong oral culture, transmitted through music and dance, that UNESCO proclaimed that this culture is a “masterpiece of oral and intangible heritage to humanity.” Vocalist, Lucy Blanco, founder of The Garifuna Jazz Ensemble, is a Garifuna who is continuing that journey. Born in the Bronx of immigrant Garifuna parents, she grew up in their traditions. However, while pursuing her dreams in the fashion industry in Los Angeles, Lucy Blanco discovered herself as the singer she always wanted to be through jazz. During a break from the fashion scene to raise her family, she started to explore that passion in earnest, honing her performance skills at every opportunity. While in L.A., Lucy found a nurturing environment that served as a launching pad for her burgeoning career as a jazz vocalist. The World Stage in Leimert Park literally opened a world that introduced her to the late Billy Higgins, mentor Dahl Scott-McDuff, music director Michael Andrews, as well as working with The Radiant Voices, directed by bassist Kevin O’ Neil. She looks back on those early years as the foundation for her approach and love of jazz. In 2008 researching her family history, Ms. Blanco discovered the Garifuna music ofAndy Palacio, Paul Nabor and Aurelio Martinez, and was inspired to develop the concept of fusing Garifuna with jazz. Home again in New York, she continued to be blessed with teachers and mentors who encouraged her, like the great Barry Harris, and she learned her lessons well. Ms. Blanco started to collaborate with some of the best musicians in the tri-state area, many with Garifuna heritage, like Ricardo Guity, resulting in a demo recording of Wayne Shorter’s ‘Speak No Evil’, up to that time, the ideal blend of traditional Garifuna sounds with familiar jazz standards. Later in the spring of 2011, the sound shifted some more as James Lovell, a Garifuna musician from Belize, and Blanco collaborated, and The Afri-Garifuna Jazz Ensemblewas born. This ensemble band was comprised of seasoned traditional and jazz musicians. It incorporated much more the distinctive sounds of the traditional Garifuna rhythms Punta, Paranda and Hungu, Hungu, Garifuna song language with Garifuna Drums, maracas, Conch, Turtle shells, piano and bass.
