Book 43 of 2024 (★★★★)
Title: Cherries (A Vietnam War Novel) Authors: John Podlaski
ISBN: 978-1452879819 Rating: ★★★★ Subject: Books.Fiction.Military.Vietnam, Books.Military.20th-21st Century.Asia.Vietnam War.Fiction
Description: In 1970, John Kowalski was among the many young, inexperienced soldiers sent to Vietnam to participate in a contentious war. Referred to as “Cherries” by their veteran counterparts, these recruits were plunged into a horrific reality. The on-the-job training was rigorous, yet most of these youths were ill-prepared to handle the severe mental, emotional, and physical demands of combat. Experiencing enemy fire and observing death up close initiates a profound transformation that is irreversible.
The author excels at storytelling. Readers affirm feeling immersed alongside the characters, partaking in their struggle for survival, experiencing the fear, awe, drama, and grief, observing acts of courage, and occasionally sharing in their humor.
"Cherries" presents an unvarnished account, and upon completion, readers will gain a deeper appreciation for the trials these young men faced over a year. It's a narrative that grips the reader throughout.
My Review: While I've been on a bit of a Vietnam War nonfiction bent lately, I decided to switch things up and go for what I'm assuming to be an almost autobiographical novel of one mans experience in the later part of the war.
As a soldier, the main character joins the Wolfhounds of the 25th ID not long after the Cambodian Incursion, and past some of the worst of the 68/69 battles. His experiences takes him over familiar territories such as the Iron Triangle, Ho Bo Woods, Michelin Rubber Plantation, and more where he and his unit uncover base camps, tunnels, and see quite a bit of action. For the latter part of his tour, as Vietnamization takes hold, the 25th is sent home and he is transfered to the 101st and the infamous A Shau valley.
That is the real strength of this book. You get a really good juxtaposition of the two units and how different the war was for both. From tactics like digging in at their night defensive positions and how they deploy mechanical ambushes, to wearing helmets vs boonie hats when out on patrol. From flat land and orderly tree plantations to hiking up mountains and walking along ridge lines. You also get a real feel for the different jobs in the unit. The main character arrives as an FNG who can barely tie his own laces, to eventually walking point, being the M-60 gunner, and being the radioman.
As far as the writing goes, while it is a little formulaic and the characters are a little cardboard, his strength is in the stories he tells, the way the people give color and flavor to the situations, and both pacing and narrative. The spelling errors are minimal (sometimes it's boonie hat, sometimes it's boony) and sometimes it can be hard to tell who is talking during some of the dialog, but none of that is really distracting as it can be in other books. My one main gripe is that this is not a book about Cherries, but about a single Cherry… this is the Polack's story and his alone. This is about his experiences and growth, and it is singularly focused even as he becomes an experienced veteran and helps new cherries.
Honestly, this book really hits all of its marks, and it's really an enjoyable read from start to finish as long as you understand that this is really a well crafted and excellent novelization of what is basically a memoir.

Hamburger Hill (1987, John Irvin)
25/03/2024
Hamburger Hill is a 1987 film directed by John Irvin, inspired by the Battle of Hamburger Hill, which occurred during the Vietnam War.
Vietnam, 1969, a group of young paratroopers of the 101st Airborne Division, under the command of Sergeant Frantz, is sent to the A Shau valley to try to wrest Hill 937 from the North Vietnamese, which, following the battle, will be nicknamed "Hamburger Hill" (meat grinder hill), due to the significant losses suffered by American soldiers.
Filmed between October and December 1986, Hamburger Hill is part of the Vietnam-movie genre of the period, coming out a year after Oliver Stone's Platoon and at the same time as Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket.

guys guys. so I was re-watching tua season 2, and guess what i noticed. remember how dave dies on a shau valley during the war? well, in episode 10, as dave is getting on the bus, the guy at the door tells him, "let's go marine, get on the bus." but if dave was a marine, he couldn't have been at a shau valley.
so klaus was able to save dave after all.

"I was a total fuck up." (From Viktor)
The rare tautness of anger crosses Klaus's face: anger, however, at forces other than Viktor.
"Says who, mi hermano?" he softly demands, glancing around to ensure there are no eavesdroppers.
Softer still, "Hey, c'mon. Says who? And dad doesn't count."
Up lofts a forefinger.
"Neither does Allison. She's...not herself."
Or more herself than ever; but Klaus isn't quite ready to lose another loved one, be it to enemy bullets in the A Shau Valley, a chain of freak accidents, or the worst version of themselves.

Thoughts at 7pm...
I tag my books in Calibre with people and places and things I think will come up again and again across books.
This can be a slow and agonizing process, but I find that I keep coming back to it over and over again, because I’ll read a book years later that mentions a battle on Hill 488 and think... fuck, what book was it that I read about that from someone else’s perspective?!!?!?
Tags help with that.
I don’t tag everything, or everyone... just stuff I have a feeling will come up over and over, and yet for a single book I’ll end up with this:

Two German Scientists
Chapter 1
Dr Brandt had been pleasantly surprised at a job offer to work for the secret government organisation Omega. However, things take a turn when her boss decides she’s more of a nuisance than a valuable member of the group. How will Dr Brandt survive when thrust into a new world, one where the actions of four men will dictate the survival of the universe?
Firebase z
6th January 1984
I had thought it might be difficult to get a job after I finished my studies. My PhD doesn’t lend itself to versatility; intense studies of human catatonic states and re-animation of organ systems, it’s obviously very interesting but not very useful to…anyone. Or at least that’s what I thought. Turns out my research wasn’t far off, at least according to some secret government organisations. I suppose the Cold War has made the Americans and the Russians research some strange things, and they both have eyes everywhere. They even managed to pick up on my little project. The day I graduated with my PhD, just as I left the hall I was accosted by some strange men in black suits. They asked if they could talk to me about some promising new research I could be involved in.
Today I actually get to start. So it turns out the Russian government got to me first, I now work for an organisation called Omega though I’m not exactly sure what it’s about yet. Something about different dimensions. They did say that my research was very relevant so I’m excited. I arrive at outpost 25 in the A Shau Valley of Vietnam at exactly 6 a.m., not too early for me, thankfully. I’m escorted from the helicopter by a soldier, I didn’t quite catch his name but I don’t suppose that matters really. “Dr Peck should be here to meet you shortly.” He salutes me before leaving me alone in the room. My first impression of the facility is that I’m not going to be living the life of luxury…the place looks like it was built in a few weeks with little budget and no regard for safety regulations. All the buildings appear to be made of corrugated metal sheets with a little bit of plasterboard for insulation. My eyes scan the perimeter looking for any signs of the actual work that takes place here, but the facility seems new, I’m not quite sure yet.
My thoughts are interrupted as I see a man in a white lab coat walk into the room, he looks quite a lot older than me, fine lines etched into the skin around his eyes, maybe from stress. He has brown hair, receding slightly. “You must be Dr Peck?” I ask, standing, moving my suitcase behind me and extending my hand for him to shake.
“Yeah, and you’re Dr Brandt? Little young?” He replies in a strong American accent, looking down at my hand, not reaching out with his own. I let out an awkward laugh, putting my hand back down to my side.
“Yeah I’m uh…25. I-is that okay?” He scowls back at me.
“I mean there’s no age requirement, I just want to know you’re qualified for this research project. I don’t just wanna let any little girl that waltzes in have access to my research.” God, someone got out of the wrong side of bed this morning, still I try not to let it discourage me.
“Uh, well Dr Peck. I assume you have read my file and know of my research, if you feel I am under qualified to be a part of this project then that is your own decision. However I would appreciate being permitted to begin working here and prove myself to you. If after this time you still believe me to be of no value to you, then I will happily leave.” I cough, trying to keep my composure. He huffs before reaching out his hand to shake mine.
“Well I suppose you do have some balls kid, I’ll give you a chance.” I take his hand, he gives it a firm shake before gesturing to me to walk with him.
We exit the building, walking over to the next, labelled scientist quarters. “You’ll be working directly under me, along with Dr Kuhlklay. I’ll show you to your room and then I’ll have to leave you, busy job.”
He walks me over to a small room with glass windows facing the hallway. The sign outside says ‘Dr Alvarie Irina Brandt’, nice it's spelled correctly. He opens the door for me, giving me the key card. “Here you go, the next room over is Dr Kuhlklay. To close the window shutter it's this button here.” He presses a small red button next to the window, metal shutters crash down, blocking the view. I think I’ll just keep those down. “You should have everything you need, lab coat is over there or you can just wear one you already have, I don’t care. Name tag is on the desk. If you need anything, don’t ask me, I’m far too fucking busy for admin work.” He walks over to the door and leaves before poking his head back in. “Meet me in the conference room at 4pm, don’t be fucking late.” He finally leaves, closing the door after himself.
“Lovely.” I mutter to myself, throwing my suitcase down on the bed. I take a look into the wardrobe to see the labcoat, it's good quality but it definitely will not fit my figure…I’ll just wear my own, good job I brought it. I walk back over to the bed, opening up my suitcase to start putting some of my things away. They didn’t allow me to bring much, I’ve got some clothes: mainly turtle necks, shirts and suit trousers, there’s a few other items such as pyjamas as well as undergarments. I was permitted to bring through my own toiletries thankfully, I doubt the ones here are any good. They let me bring some documents of my old research but only paper, no digital files. I start to put away my clothes into the small wardrobe, still big enough to fit my small volume of garments. Next I put all my books in the cabinet underneath my desk, and place my toiletries in the little basket I brought to take to the bathroom when I need to. “Done, nice. Now what?” I mutter to myself, looking around.
Maybe I’ll have a walk around? I really need to find out where that conference room is. I pull out my lab coat from the wardrobe, slipping it on before attaching my new name tag. Next I go over to the door, opening it. As I walk out I immediately bump into someone. “Извините меня!” He squeaks out as my face collides with his torso.
“No-no, it’s okay. I didn’t look where I was going.” I reply quickly in Russian, shaking my head before looking up at his name tag. “Oh you’re Dr Kuhlklay!”
He leans back to have a look at my name tag. “And you’re Dr Brandt. I thought you were English?” I tilt my head in confusion. “You were just speaking Russian and you have a German name, you’re confusing.” I giggle awkwardly.
“Oh my family is German and uh..I learned Russian when I was given the job here. I wanted to be able to understand everyone better.” He nods, seemingly in approval.
“Well you’ve done more than Peck. I assume you’ve met him, our ‘boss’.” I nod.
“Yeah he just left, showed me to my room.”
“Sorry about him, he’s just a Мудак, but you’ll get used to it.” I give back a meek smile. “I can give you a quick tour if you like, the facility isn’t too big but it can be a bit of a maze.” Nodding excitedly I agree before quickly calming myself down.
“Yeah, sounds great! Sorry- I’m just a little excited. I’ve never worked anywhere like this before.” He gives a low chuckle, waving his hand as if to waft away my concerns.
We begin to walk. “I understand, is this your first time ever being evolved in something like this? A top secret project.”
“Oh yeah, I mean I only just graduated two years ago… I’m still not entirely sure why they let me on this project, I don’t even know what it is.” His eyes widen at this.
“You only graduated two years ago!? I thought you seemed young…” I look up at him.
“I know I am young but it doesn’t mean I won’t work hard.” He hums.
“Maybe it's what we need, a fresh set of eyes.” I smile back at him.
“Thanks for the encouragement Dr Kuhlklay.”
“Please-“ he interrupts. “Call me Dimitri, no need for the formalities.”
“Then you may call me Alvarie, but not around Peck. I don’t want him to think any less of me than he already does.”
“Sure Alvarie. Anyway, the meeting at 4pm is in the room right here. It’s actually right next to the kitchen so you can just come there to eat with me after the meeting if you would like.” I tilt my head, smiling.
“Sounds good Dimitri, thanks for being so welcoming.” We keep walking, he points out where the scientists' bathrooms are as well as some of the lab stations. After that we say goodbye. I head back to my room to do some reading before the meeting, trying to understand what’s actually going on here.

Book 49 of 2024 (★★★★★)
Title: Never Without Heroes: Marine Third Reconnaissance Battalion in Vietnam, 1965-70 Authors: Lawrence C. Vetter Jr.
ISBN: 9780804108072 Rating ★★★★★ Subject: Books.Military.20th-21st Century.Asia.Vietnam War.Specops.Marine Recon, Books.Military.20th-21st Century.SpecOps.US.USMC
Description: FOUR CONGRESSIONAL MEDALS OF HONOR, THIRTEEN NAVAL CROSSES, SEVENTY-TWO SILVER STARS . . . In four and a half years in Vietnam, the Marines of the Third Reconnaissance Battalion repeatedly penetrated North Vietnamese and Vietcong sanctuaries by foot and by helicopter to find enemy forces, learn the enemy's intentions, and, when possible, bring deadly fire down on his head. Heavily armed, well-camouflaged teams of six and eight men daily exposed themselves to overwhelming enemy forces so that other Marines would have the information necessary to fight the war. It's all here: grueling, tense, and deadly recon patrols; insertions directly into NVA basecamps; last-stand defenses in the wreckage of downed helicopters; pursuit by superior North Vietnamese forces; agonizing deaths of men who valiantly put their lives on the line. NEVER WITHOUT HEROES is the first book to recount the story of a Marine reconnaissance battalion in Vietnam from the day of its arrival to its withdrawal. In Vietnam, Larry Vetter served as a platoon leader in Third Recon Battalion. He supplements his own recollections with Marine Corps records, exhaustive interviews with veterans, and correspondence to capture the bravery, and self-sacrifice of war.
My Review: Vetter said it best when he wrote that he wanted to "portray the history of the 3rd Recon Battalion and its men in Vietnam in a historical, factual, and personal way." Well, I have to say Mission Accomplished! Few books are as unflinchingly raw in their criticism as they are in their effusive praise, but Vetter pulls no punches when he describes just how out of touch the chain of command was from the actual situation on the ground that the Recon Marines experienced. Whether it was Gen. Walts refusal to accept reality because he had his own agenda to push, or the lack of support, respect, and belief the teams got from their rear commanders. The criticisms of the Generals alone is well worth reading in this book, especially the excerpts where Vetter looks at the Generals articles in the Marine Corps Gazette and shreds them for how much they lack any credibility to what was actually occurring in Vietnam during those commanders tours. But this book is more than just that aspect, it also tells the story of the history of the unit from the early patrols to the last ones. Telling both the big picture overview of what was happening in I Corps, the fights with Westmoreland vs Walt over how to prosecute the war in I Corps, and the on the ground view of teams in action throughout the Backyard, Charlie Ridge, Leatherneck Square and on the ground at Khe Sanh. The stories from the survivors of missions gone hellaciously bad, to the stories of those who were lost forever, Vetter manages to piece together multiple viewpoints, sources, and stories to give the reader the full picture of 3rd Recon's time in Vietnam. This book jumps from academic facts to incredible story telling with ease, page after page, and it is truly one of the best books on the subject of this incredibly heroic unit in the face of an enemy in the field and an adversary in it's own command structure.

Hamburger Hill – The Last Patrol
My friend, Jonas Thorsell, re-discovered the battlefields of Hamburger Hill with some Rakkasan warriors who fought there 54 years ago. Join them on their quest to reach the summit. As I sit down and write this, it is almost exactly 11 years since my first visit to Hamburger Hill in the A Shau Valley in the western mountainous area of Vietnam. "Eh, suit yourself." Klaus took a long swig from the bottle, barely tasting the burn as it went down. The Seance had been drinking for God knows how long--hours, today, but in general, since they were barely teens. Anything to be numb, to calm the spirits. But tonight, the attic was strangely empty of ghostly activity.
Once Willow had settled in beside him, Klaus offered out his hand to take. "Just concentrate with me," he instructed, ready to try again. After a deep breath, he addressed the room.
"I call upon the spirits...bring me David Joseph Katz, of the 173rd Airborne brigade," Klaus said, trying to keep his voice powerful, and not incredibly slurred. But the next words were harder. "Died on--on Hill 689, in the A Shau Valley, February 21st, 1968. Bring--Bring him back to me."
Though his hands glowed briefly with blue energy, it was quick to flicker out. Klaus sighed, dejected by another failure.
"Yeah... That's what happens every time."
Spirits and Spirits - Open RP Starter
"Come on, you beautiful bastard, show yourself!"
Cross legged in a circle of candles, Klaus Hargreeves held court with the dead. Or, he was trying to. Beer cans and liquor bottles littered the attic floor around his circle, flickering in the candlelight. Another handle of vodka, half empty, sat beside him, the source of his ghostly dysfunction. But Klaus hadn't planned on summoning a ghost tonight--rarely ever, in fact.
After far too many drinks, Klaus has decided it was time to practice his powers. Five and Luther always got on him about training, since they were kids. Emotionally stunted by sixteen, Klaus had rarely taken the time to purposefully use his powers. The ghost-vision was always on, until he drowned it out with drugs and booze, but who knew what he could do when he was trying.
Unfortunately, what had fueled this motivation was also his power's undoing. The only spector to show up clearly was Ben. His dead brother watched skeptically, leaned against the windowsill nearby.
"This isn't going to work," Ben pointed out, decidedly unhelpful.
"Yeah, I heard you the first five times, Benny," Klaus shot back, glaring back at him. "Are you gonna make yourself useful, or are you too comfortable in the Peanut Gallery?"
"Oh, warm and cozy." But the sarcastic smile quickly dropped, eyebrows raising at something behind Klaus. "You've got a visitor."
