A Monaco day of days for Checo by Peter Windsor
He was quickest on Saturday morning, he crashed on Saturday afternoon - but on Sunday, while the track was still wet, he came in early for intermediate Pirellis. From that moment, Red Bull's Sergio Perez began to maximise his afternoon. Finding a dry-ish groove, he laid the foundations for a decisive six-lap run through to another pit stop for slicks - for a run through to the lead. And thereafter - after a red-flag pause and a switch to Pirelli mediums - Sergio Perez was never headed, despite a flat-spotted left front, despite intense pressure applied by Ferrari's Carlos Sainz. In this video Peter Windsor highlights the qualities that enabled Perez to manage his tyres - and questions the decision-making behind the races of Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen. 2022 F1 Singapore GP: qualifying analysis by Peter Windsor
In theory, given Max Verstappen's proven propensity to win from all corners of the grid, a P8 starting-slot in Singapore shouldn't pose too much trouble for the reigning champion. In reality, we shouldn't forget that on the Marina Bay circuit, as at Monaco, it is extremely difficult to overtake. Things happen on street circuits, however: front rows get taken out at the first corner; Safety Cars lurk remorselessly. And so they line up for battle: Ferrari's Charles Leclerc is on the pole not only for the ninth time this season - the most for any Ferrari driver since the days of Michael Schumacher - but also for the 18th time in his career (thus putting him ahead of Max in the pole rankings). Red Bull's Sergio Perez, the winner at Monaco, lines up on the front row alongside Charles - and P3, having recorded virtually the same lap time as Charles and Checo, is none other than Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton, now Eu 25k lighter thanks to another round in the bizarre jewellery fight. Lewis was quick on Friday and quick throughout most of Saturday, when the damp track reduced grip levels and thus the dreaded porpoising. In the video, Peter Windsor recalls the day's highlights and looks forward to the night race ahead.
