Thoughts on Lover

@taylorswift you killed it. To be perfectly honest, starting with Red it's been a learn to love (I don't do well with change and I lovelovelove them all now!), but with this album I immediately lovered it!

It was really hard to rank the songs on this album because they are all so good! But here's my take.

#18 False God

This is the only song that I had a "meh" reaction to. It's slowly growing on me, but if one song had to be cut, it would be this one.

Favorite lyrics: "I know heaven's a thing / I go there when you touch me, honey / Hell is when I fight with you"

#17 Cruel Summer

I like this song, but I just don't get this song. I like the sound and, I love love love the bridge, but I just don't understand it. (I also thought the lyrics were "he looks so pretty like the devil" instead of "he looks up grinning like a devil")

Favorite lyrics: "I don't wanna keep secrets just to keep you" and "'And I scream, "For whatever it's worth / I love you, ain't that the worst thing you ever heard?"'

#16 You Need to Calm Down

Very fun song and I like it a lot, who would have thought this would be one of the weaker songs on the album? This song is a triple, most of the rest of the songs are completely out of the park home runs! Great message, I think everyone one needs to calm down (ironically especially the left).

Favorite lyrics: "Say it in the street, that's a knock-out / But you say it in a tweet, that's a cop-out" and "Shade never made anyone less gay".

#15 ME!

Fun light song. Every time I hear the song I do the UH hand to the forehead from the music video. The music video was so great and the cat surprise!!! ME! was her first opening single I've immediately loved since Mine. (While I've grown to appreciate WANEGBT, I thought it was a joke when I first heard it when she played it on her live stream party. I thought she'd be like "JK here's the real single". Again, don't do well with change). I didn't mind the hey kids part, and was actually disappointed it was removed from the album version.

Favorite lyrics: "I'm the only one of me / Let me keep you company-e-e-eh / Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh / You're the only one of you / Baby, that's the fun of you"

#14 London Boy

Fun song! Cool learning more about London, makes me want to go back! I thought it was clever.

Favorite lyrics: "He likes my American smile, like a child when our eyes meet / Darling, I fancy you" and "So I guess all the rumors are true / You know I love a London boy / Boy, I fancy you"

#13 Miss Americana

Love the sound of this song. The metaphor is also interesting (easy to relate to on either team. As someone whose team has always been loosing where I live this is very, very relatable). The song can be enjoyed regardless of the political metaphor.

Favorite lyrics: "American stories burning before me / I'm feeling helpless, the damsels are depressed / Boys will be boys then, where are the wise men? / Darling, I'm scared"

#12 It's Nice to Have a Friend

Cute sweet song, I love it! Great classic Taylor Swift story telling song writing. I like the continued theme of snow.

Favorite lyrics: "Church bells ring, carry me home / Rice on the ground looks like snow / Call my bluff, call you "Babe" / Have my back, yeah, every day / Feels like home, stay in bed / The whole weekend"

#11 I Forgot That You Existed

I love this song! It is upbeat and sends a good message. "It isn't love it isn't hate it's just indifference" hits the nail on the head when it comes to truly being over something. I really need to work on the whole "I forgot that you existed" thing as I tend to hold on to grudges and let them consume me. Can't wait for the peaceful and quiet.

Favorite lyrics: "Your name on my lips, tongue-tied / Free rent, living in my mind"

#10 Afterglow

I think I would like this song more if it was earlier on the album. By the time I get here, I'm so overwhelmed with good songs it is difficult to fully appreciate. It is the perfect song to go after ME! though. There are so many good lyrics in this song. The chorus and verses are so relatable.

Favorite lyrics: "I lived like an island, punished you with silence / Went off like sirens, just crying / Why'd I have to break what I love so much? / It's on your face, don't walk away, I need to say" and "I'm the one who burned us down / But it's not what I meant / Sorry that I hurt you / I don't wanna do, I don't wanna do this to you / I don't wanna lose, I don't wanna lose this with you"

#9 The Man

I honestly was expecting not to like this song. I was worried it would be ungrateful and just eye roll. But it was the opposite - the sound and the lyrics! Taylor is in a unique position where being a woman has helped her most of her career (no one would have played a male teenager writing songs like that on country radio). However, she certainly has been held to different standards as a woman. I like how the chorus is relatable to anyone and the verses are uniquely personal to Taylor. Taylor would be THE man.

Favorite lyrics: "I'm so sick of running as fast as I can / Wondering if I'd get there quicker if I was a man / And I'm so sick of them coming at me again / 'Cause if I was a man, then I'd be the man"

#8 Soon You'll Get Better

Wow. This song. I sobbed the first few times I heard it. (I still have to skip over it at work). We had to take a listening break after this one. The story telling and the small details.... Taylor, thank you for sharing such a personal song. I hope your mother gets better soon.

Favorite lyrics: "Holy orange bottles, each night, I pray to you / Desperate people find faith, so now I pray to Jesus too" and "And I hate to make this all about me / But who am I supposed to talk to? / What am I supposed to do / If there's no you?"

#7 Daylight

Such a perfect ending to a perfect album. What a great message. I really need to step into the daylight and let it go. I love this song so much, there are so many hidden gem lyrics in this one. Hard to pick favorites. Love being burning red to golden, great call back, even better lesson.

Favorite lyrics: "I don't wanna look at anything else now that I saw you / I don't wanna think of anything else now that I thought of you" and "I wounded the good and I trusted the wicked / Clearing the air, I breathed in the smoke" and "I once believed love would be (Burning red) / But it's golden / Like daylight"

#6 Paper Rings

I love this song so much! Great story telling, perfect details, and a great message. I immediately lovered it and it originally was in my top 3. Since then it's gone down a little I think because my love of slow songs is catching up to me, it is so SO hard to rank these top 6. This song is upbeat and happy. I just want to dance around. Especially that pre-chorus. Makes me want to marry my boyfriend with paper rings!

Favorite lyrics: "Went home and tried to stalk you on the internet / Now I've read all of the books beside your bed" (too cute, funny how things change!) and "I like shiny things, but I'd marry you with paper rings / Uh huh, that's right, you're the one I want".

#5 Lover

I simply LOVER this song! This song is everything I love about Taylor Swift. The story telling, the simplified arrangement of the song - I am so glad she went back to her roots on this song. A week or two after the album was released I went out to happy hour with some coworkers and this song was playing and my boyfriend walked in and I melted. Huge bonus that the music video is just perfect.

Favorite lyrics: "Can I go where you go? / Can we always be this close forever and ever?" and "My heart's been borrowed and yours has been blue / All's well that ends well to end up with you"

#4 I Think He Knows

THIS SONG!!!! I LOVE IT!!!! Not a song I would usually expect to love this much but I do. Skipping around with this song in my head. Also, my boyfriend totally knows! I love the throw back to sparks fly and how she's driving.

Side note - When I sing this song I change attitude to cattitude. It's like gorgeous how I sing this song to my cats. I really want to make a parody version song about an animal shelter with cats.

Favorite lyrics: "I am an architect, I'm drawing up the plans / It's like I'm 17, nobody understands / No one understands" and "He got my heartbeat / Skipping down 16th Avenue / Got that, oh, I mean / Wanna see what's under that attitude like / I want you, bless my soul / And I ain't gotta tell him, I think he knows" and "Lyrical smile, indigo eyes, hand on my thigh / We can follow the sparks, I'll drive"

#3 Death By A Thousand Cuts

This song. Taylor proves that she can still write sad songs even when she's happy. Even though I'm happy, I still love sad songs. I cried the first time I heard this song, I don't think I could handle this song if my boyfriend and I ever broke up. There are so many great lyrics and details in this song. The traffic lights lyric is so desperate and tragic. I love this song so much. (This song goes back and forth between #2 and #3).

Favorite lyrics: "And what once was ours is no one's now / I see you everywhere, the only thing we share / Is this small town / You said it was a great love, one for the ages / But if the story's over, why am I still writing pages?" and "I look through the windows of this love / Even though we boarded them up / Chandelier's still flickering here / 'Cause I can't pretend it's okay when it's not" and "Quiet my fears with the touch of your hand / Paper cut stings from our paper-thin plans" and "I take the long way home / I ask the traffic lights if it'll be alright / They say, "I don't know"".

#2 Cornelia Street

This song is both heartbreaking and happy. I love it! The song writing on this is absolute perfection. Not going to lie, this one also made me cry the first time I heard it. The emotion behind this song is so raw and real - "kind of heartbreak time could never mend" just kills me. Continuation of her doubts from the archer and a peak through the years of this relationship. There's a happy ending but at the same time still worry. I need a stripped down version of this song. This song goes back and forth between #2 and #3.

Favorite lyrics: "We were a fresh page on the desk / Filling in the blanks as we go / As if the street lights pointed in an arrow head / Leading us home" and "And I hope I never lose you, hope it never ends / I'd never walk Cornelia Street again / That's the kinda heartbreak time could never mend" and "Years ago, we were just inside / Barefoot in the kitchen / Sacred new beginnings / That became my religion, listen".

#1 The Archer

The emotion behind this song is so raw and real. Taylor is letting us in to her deepest darkest self doubt. I love every single thing about this song. Every lyric just cuts right to the heart. I turn this song up every time so I can hear every detail masterfully woven into the song. The way she pleads "help me hold onto you" kills me. But what I love most about this song is that it ends on a positive note "you could stay" and she's ready to fight for this relationship. This song is my #2 or #3 favorite Taylor Swift song with All Too Well at #1 and I go back and forth on Clean being #2 or #3.

Favorite lyrics: all of them, but especially "I wake in the night / I pace like a ghost / The room is on fire / Invisible smoke / And all of my heroes / Die all alone / Help me hold on to you" and "I've been the archer / I've been the prey / Screaming, "Who could ever leave me darling... / But who could stay?""

Over all. I'd say a 13/10. I cannot wait for Loverfest West. And also, when does album #8 come out? Seriously though Taylor, thank you for these past 13 years. Your music has been there for me throw the end of middle school, high school, college, and now the real world. I cannot wait to see what is next for you.

In defense of the Folkloric Rumpelstiltskin

In defense of the Folkloric Rumpelstiltskin...

I used to think everyone knew the story of Rumpelstiltskin.  It's so basic.  For those who don't know the tale here it is in a nutshell.

You have this miller who drunkenly boasts that his daughter is so perfect that she can spin straw into gold so the king drags her to a tower and forces her to stay the night.  He says if she doesn't spin the straw there into golden thread he will have her put death.  Once alone she weeps and a strange little man-like creature with a limp to his right foot appears and offers to spin the straw into golden thread, for a price.

(Side note: Yes, he has the same limp Rumpelstiltskin in human form had in the first season of Once Upon a Time.  I kind of wish he kept it even in Imp mode. You don’t see too many disabled yet magically powerful characters outside of Doctor Strange’s damaged hands.  Notice how in each illustration from the classic fairy tale Rumpelstiltskin either is using a cane or he does not put weight on one foot.)

She pays with a necklace or a ring that belonged to her mother (usually necklace first and ring on the second night).  Now, obviously he doesn’t need these things for their financial worth since he can spin straw into gold.  But the emotions tied to these objects, the love, the sentimental significance, these endow such objects with a special kind of magick that would be appealing to a faery or faery-like creature.  The next night she's made to do this again with more straw.  The imp appears when she’s alone and she makes a similar payment. (The first night is usually the necklace and second night the ring, both having been gifts from her late mother).

The third night she's given a very large room filled with straw and the king demands she spin the straw there into gold again but this time if she succeeds he'll marry her (in some later versions it's marriage to his son instead considering he was threatening to kill her...)  This time the imp asks for her first born child. 

For whatever reason she's not sure she'll ever have a child (she may have thought herself infertile) and agrees.   She marries the king and bears a son.  The imp returns for the baby after he has been nursed but the Queen does not want to give him up.

 She cries and the imp takes pity on her (the wording that he takes pity on her is even in the Grimm version, this is not up for interpretation).  And he gives her three nights to guess his name.  

Just before the third night one of the Queen's men (or her father or The Queen herself) spies the imp twirling and singing in front of a fire near his cottage in the woods where he gloats that his name is Rumpelstiltskin.

So of course the Queen guesses his name and gets to keep her baby.

Now here's where I defend the little bastard.   One of my favorite defenses of Rumpelstiltskin actually comes up in the 1963 Science fiction novel The man who fell to Earth by Walter Tevis.   The novel was later adapted into the movie starring David Bowie and has a sequel play (created by David Bowie) called Lazarus.

In The man who fell to Earth novel there is an alien protagonist named Thomas Jerome Newton who comes to Earth and takes a position as inventor who runs a major corporation.   His plan is to ferry his people (from their dying world) and they can take positions of power here on Earth, partly to save themselves and party to stop Earth from meeting the self destruction their world did because of squandering their natural resources, pollution and petty wars.  

A chemistry professor named Nathan Bryce learns Newton's secret and confronts Newton.  Newton compares himself to Rumpelstiltskin to which Bryce replies "But Rumpelstiltskin wanted to take the queen's baby!" And Newton replies with "Yes, but without Rumpelstiltskin there would be no baby or Queen for that matter."

Now on to my defense...

  First...  Rumpelstiltskin is NOT the wicked witch in the Gingerbread house.   He is not Baba Yaga. He is not an Ogre.   He is a faery.   Contrary to many assumptions (due to English translations) he is not a dwarf.  

He is a Manikin to be precise.  Manikin is a now archaic term meaning a slightly smaller than human man-like being.  The word imp (before people started to associate it with demons) had a similar meaning.  Essentially it's a slightly small but otherwise human-sized faery without wings.

The Rumpelstiltskin story has it's roots over four thousand years ago.  Over time the imp's name has changed but the basic story remains the same.  According to The Classic Fairy Tales by Iona and Peter Opie (which is a collection of the Fairy tales pre-Brothers Grimm earliest written versions and the histories behind them) the basis for the odd name comes from the belief that faeries can easily be summoned by those who know their true names.

Names have power. And if you call a faery by name (particularly three times) you might invoke them to come.  You can banish a faery the same way.  So to protect themselves from this faeries are given very complex or unusual names that you are not likely to hear in the human world.  Tom Tit Tot is the English variation of Rumpelstiltskin and the original German is Rumpelstilzchen (Regina's mispronunciation when she first summoned him in Once Upon a Time was actually an Easter Egg for the actual German).

Here is a simple truth, most faeries (even dark faeries) are fiercely protective of children.   This is why Maleficent's curse against Aurora was not until she was in her teens. 

Rumpelstiltskin never wanted to kill or eat the baby prince.  He wanted to raise the child and possibly turn the child into a faery creature like himself.  That's what faeries and the like usually did with taken babies.

"Before your baby brother becomes one of us forever..." to quote The Goblin King, Jareth, in Labyrinth.

And there's a clue in his own song lyrics.

"Today I brew, tomorrow I bake, And then the Prince child I will take. For no one knows my little game, That Rumpelstiltskin is my name."

The alternate translation of the verse is this:

"Today do I bake. Tomorrow I brew. The day after that the queen's child comes in; And oh! I am glad that nobody knew That the name I am called is Rumpelstiltskin."

Both versions have one thing in common.  He never talks about killing or eating the child.  In fact he talks about brewing and baking in preparation for the child.  He's singing about feeding and nurturing the child, not killing him.  He specifically speaks of brewing one night, baking the next and THEN bringing the child home.  

He never once even suggests eating the child.  I don't know why so many modern readers leapt to this conclusion other than that they maybe trusted a bad B 1990s horror film.  It's not even suggested in the story, just that he would take the baby.

The second part of my defense of him comes from the fact that he pitied the Queen and that's why he gave her the three nights to guess his name.  We're specifically told in both the Grimm version and the pre-Grimm version of the story that he took pity on the Queen. That is why he gave her three days to guess his name.  Even in the Grimm version (where he is portrayed quite wickedly) it specifically says he took pity on her.

Honestly, I think he lost on purpose.  Think about it.  He had no audience. He had absolutely no reason to twirl around outside his house and repeat his own name in song for three nights in a row. I think he was letting her win but he was too proud to just forgo the bargain. 

The ending of the original pre-Brothers Grimm version has him fly out of the castle from a window on an over-sized soup ladle, much like a witch.  He essentially shrugs and flies off and that's that.

It's only when the Brothers Grimm got a hold of it that he started to stomp his foot and go "The witches told you!" or in other translations "The Devil told you!" and get one foot stuck and then accidentally rip himself in two (or in some cases fall through a crack into Hell).

And honestly I kind of don't blame the imp for wanting to raise the young prince.  Think how horrible that father must be (The King) that he bullied and threatened a girl to spin straw into gold and then made the third night's "prize" being marriage to him.   That child might be better off raised by faeries.

“Sh, sh, sh--!” Molly would whisper shout at him. Her hands move to begin caressing his cheeks, trying to calm him down. “It’s fine. It’s okay. We’re gonna be okay. You know why? ‘Cause Molly is right here, sweetheart..”

Okay. The situation was truthfully making her anxiety ramped to an eleven. As she stares down at beaten, bleeding body at their feet she felt her legs ready to give out. She could scream, cry and panic all in one easy little package. But Angelo was here with her - and HE was freaking the hell out. It was instinct. She was always going to be strong for him. Snuffing out whatever sort of panic she had within her as she began to try and calculate the situation they were in.

“I don’t think he’s dead... Yet.” They can’t keep him alive. Not after what they just did. Then they’d REALLY be fucked. “... Go start tha’ car and open tha’ trunk. Make sure there ain’t no towels or anythin’ like that in there.” Fortunately the family car’s trunk was already stripped of carpet and the like. It wasn’t like that thing hasn’t seen this sort of scenario before.

Oh, if that car could talk.

“I’m gonna clean up this mess, okay?” As always. As long as she was around she’ll clean up Angelo’s messes in a heart beat. “It’s gonna be like nothin’ eva’ happened. I pra’mise.”

Shallow breathing from Molly curled up under a blanket as she lays her head on her elder brother’s lap. Her eyes puffy, cheeks red and body feeling numb from the sobbing and pain she’s dealt with that evening.

It was a hard couple of months for Molly. The following week was the first time either of her brothers actually got see Molly. Always trying to fight her own battles alone.

Angelo tried the most to cling onto Molly, it was difficult to try and get any alone time to grieve and “cope” as he stuck to her like glue. Stubborn thing. But with her older brother? Well. She felt it wasn’t difficult.

He’s been so distant. That thread growing weaker and weaker as the days and years went on... Their father being more oppressive, drowning his own grief and sorrows into work and bitterness. Did he even notice his daughter’s need for comfort when the passing of her boyfriend happened?

The same answer to the question of ‘did he realize his children needed his support more than ever after their mother passed?’

And like with that, Molly tanked it alone.

But this time Molly had other ways of coping.

One her brother’s would realize by now, she figures. The marks on her arms aren’t exactly inconspicuous. The way she looks whenever she comes out from her room. The smell of booze and cheap cologne on her person... It’s not subtle.

Nico is the one to find her tonight. Stumbling into the house in the late hours of the night, disheveled with mascara and makeup running down her face. Bruises even littered her arms, but, who knows how long they’ve been there.

It was immediate. Molly didn’t even register her brother taking her into his arms and holding her in an embrace. Carrying her as he took her to the couch and settled her against him. Arms protectively wrapped around her, a hand combing through her hair.

The first words out of her mouth to him in what felt like months were the words, “I’m sorry.” The weight of her sentence was heavy. Hitting like a brick. A sucker punch to the gut.

It was when the tears would flow again as she’d continue to give a sob of apologies. Curling up tighter into herself, shaking her head as her body shuddered.

It was then she’d feel him hold her tightly, lifting her up so she was resting against his chest as he buried his face into her hair. It was there, next to her ear, would he say a simple apology of his own.

And it was enough to make her melt down all over again. Her arms clamping around him for dear life. As if she dared to let go she’d loose him forever.

She needed her big brother more than anything right now.

Alright. We Did A Murder. Now That’s A Crime. 

Molly slowly is backed up against the bed frame, her eyes wide and face flushed a rosy red as her lips were pursed. Now, usually, the rolls here are reversed.

Molly ALWAYS tends to fluster Tiffany into a mess. It was always so cute! She was adorable - and so easy to get her all hot and bothered. But ... Tiffany hasn’t made the moves so boldly upon her. Molly didn’t know what to do! She felt the rug was just pulled out under her.

What’s worse is Tiffany now sees the stirred up girl that was beneath her usual suavity.

“Ya’-- y- Yeah?” Oh for fucks sake - going through second puberty, squeaky?
