The popularity of the site has swelled this year, 400 years after the trade in Africans to the English colonies of America began. This month’s anniversary of the first Africans to arrive in Virginia has caused a rush of interest in ancestral tourism, with people from the United States, the Caribbean and Europe seeking out their roots in West Africa.

“Ten years ago, no one went to the slave river, but this year has been massive,” said Awuracy Butler, who runs a company called Butler Tours.

She said business has nearly doubled this year, which has been touted as the Year of Return for the African diaspora tracing their family history. The number of tourists has forced her to hire more vehicles, she said.

“Everyone wants to add the slave river to their tour,” she said. The coastal forts where they spent their last days in Ghana in suffocating conditions are also increasingly popular, she said.

The increase in tourism has been an economic boon for Ghana, which unlike other West African countries has aggressively marketed its “heritage” offerings for the anniversary.

Officials see it as an opportunity to entice some much-needed foreign investment into the economy, dogged in recent years by high inflation and public debt that has needed an International Monetary Fund lending program to fix.

The Ghana Tourism Authority expects 500,000 visitors this year, up from 350,000 in 2018. Of those, 45,000 are estimated to be seeking their ancestral roots, a 42% increase from last year.

On a recent day in the capital, Accra, a delegation of tribal elders and a representative of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre welcomed a tour group at a hotel in the city.

At an event in a low-ceilinged hotel conference room, the tour guide encouraged the visitors to sing a hymn in a local language, gently chiding them for not yet knowing the tune. “You are Ghanaians now,” he said.

Members of the group, who were mostly African American, went up to the front one by one to pose with a smiling tourism ministry official or one of the robe-clad elders as they received an official certificate of participation. The investment representative launched into a lengthy power-point presentation focused on the need for investment in Ghana’s cocoa sector and the minimum capital requirements for joint ventures.

With an average spend of $1,850 per tourist, the tourism authority expects this year’s revenues to top $925 million, a 50% increase from 2018, which it hopes to sustain over the next three years at least.

Anthony Bouadi, a tour guide at Cape Coast Castle, a fortress where the captives were kept until they were sent on ships over the Atlantic, said he believes the site will change the lives of those who visit.

“The moment you get to know your history, it is going to change you,” he said. “We are encouraging our brothers and sisters from the U.S., from the Caribbean from Europe to come back to their Motherland Africa to get to know the culture … and whatever the ancestors went through.”

To make the most of the moment, Ghana will host a mass “ancestry reveal” on Friday. More than 80 African American participants, including the head of the NAACP, will learn their genetic history, touted as the largest ceremony of its kind in Africa’s history.

Ghana has long encouraged its diaspora to return and has strong links with the African American community. Malcolm X visited in the 1960s and spent time with the American poet and civil rights activist Maya Angelou, who lived there at the time. The prominent black writer and activist W.E.B. But questions remain about whether the heightened interest in Ghana can be sustained after the anniversary. Bad roads, a cumbersome visa application process and expensive flights could stem the number of visitors in the long term.

“The government has a huge responsibility,” said Peter Appiah, head of research and publicity at the Centre for National Culture in Kumasi, Ghana’s second-largest city.

“If we want to sustain this tempo,” he said, “then we need to do a lot more in terms of social infrastructure.”

SANTA CRUZ - an individual itinerary

We arrived back in Santa Cruz on 7th May. The itinerary for our fellow passengers was visiting the tortoise breeding centre at the Charles Darwin centre and also going to the highlands for the tortoise sanctuary. As we had done these activities in week one, we were provided with an individual itinerary (much to our surprise as we had thought we might have to repeat some activities at the end of the trip.)

So we were met at Santa Cruz by Pepe, one of our guides from the previous week. We were taken to the Highlands where it was actually raining. We visited a massive sinkhole caused by a lava dome collapse. Sadly there was poor visibility so we could also see part of the vegetation within the sinkhole.

The trip was designed so that we were meant to see stunning views of South Plaza but the mist defeated us. We did see some very pretty yellow birds - the yellow warbler - but they were too fast to get a photo! As we descended from the highlands and the mist we found the third type of tortoise that lives in Galapagos. Although Pepe said we would look for it, we thought we might not see it. However we came across a great specimen and watched him for several minutes.

We then went to visit an artisan coffee maker who has been in business since 1966 and still uses the original technology. He grows sugarcane and produces sugar for sale and also it is used for making alcohol. He also grows cocoa plants for the beans for chocolate making. These photos show some of the process:

This was coffee beans being crushed to take the husks off. This man is in his eighties and clearly is very active still in the process.

This was the roasting mechanism. To produce the sugar from the sugarcane, the sugar needs to be squeezed out. The equipment used was moved originally by donkeys and was sourced from the USA airport base just off Santa Cruz as the Americans left in 1966. These days humans often work the machine as the donkeys have retired.

And here was the still making the alcohol which he showed us was 55% proof. We tried a sip!

We returned to the boat for lunch and while waiting for the panga in the pier in Puerto Ayora, saw this sea turtle by the pier.

In the afternoon, we returned to Puerto Ayora. This time we walked with Pepe to visit a new coffee roasting business in the town. A young couple have started this business during the pandemic. They have become experts on the science of coffee roasting and invested in state of the art technology. They have a coffee shop next door and so they are selling the highest quality coffee. They are also running a coffee roasting service to coffee farmers to support the export of coffee. We learnt a great deal. Here is the brand new machine:

They showed us how they select beans for roasting the explained how important that is. They then roasted us some coffee beans specifically to show us the whole process. We then moved next door to sample the coffee and learnt about the importance of ratio of coffee to water and how to filter it!

They then gave us coffee to drink and a lovely muffin to go with it. The coffee was excellent. We brought some beans to use at home. It will be interesting to see if we can recreate the taste in the shop!

During our last evening on board, the guides shared a photo compilation they had put together of our last week. It will provide great memories.

Things get really busy around the holidays, but if you ever mention you like snow you will be whisked off on a Christmas vacation up to a ski resort

I sell a C#/WPF application (targeting .net 3.0 at the moment) and people keep asking me for a Mac version.

The application is a time tracking application with a good GUI, there isn't that much business logic in a time tracking application so most of the application is GUI - rewriting just the GUI is equivalent to rewriting the entire application

I don't have the resources to rewrite the application or maintain two different code bases, so I need a way to run the same code on a Mac (I know I'll have to debug and modify the code, what I mean is I can support only one code base, I can't split the project into different Mac and Windows projects - I just don't have the time to work on two projects).

Porting the application to a cross-platform UI library, to a different programing language or to Silverlight are all not relevant - it will take too much time and I think I'll get more sales by investing this time in new features.

Does anyone know of a tool that can run or port C#/WPF to the Mac?

There's absolutely no way you can run full-fledged WPF app on Mac. I'm not even sure if this is possible in Parallels. The best thing you can do is to use Silverlight, which was previously named 'WPF/E' and does run on Macintosh.

We were in a similar situation. We had a working Windows project and wanted a Mac version.

Our product was in two parts, one a .Net application, the other a Director projector app.

The Director app should be easy right, cross platform and all? Git repository visual studio. Well nope, it rarely is that easy, we ended up with two versions of the Director source file.

Microsoft visual studio 2008 express editions. Microsoft visual studio 2008 free download - Microsoft Office 2008, Visual Studio Code, Real Studio, and many more programs.

Getting the .Net app running required using Mono for the underlying engine, which worked well for us as we were only number crunching byte arrays really. The UI on the otherhand we had to rewrite in Cocoa. It cost us nearly as much as making the Windows version did, as we also had to learn all the Mac stuff as we went.

Since then we've only updated the Windows version.

We had a similar issue. We wrote a Mac version in Silverlight 3 (which supports quite alot of WPF .NET stuff). It was sandboxed but if this isn't a problem, you can do some nice stuff. Our codebase is now on WPF and Silverlight 3 and is the same, when we compile it produces the SL3 and Desktop apps.

You want a new feature (support a entire different platform) and you wish to put no effort in it. Sorry, most of the time that will not work.

Besides the most basic (native) .NET stuff with mono, I do not think you can run a WPF application natively on MacOSX.

If you think you can make more money by gaining Mac users. Livestream studio software for mac. You might consider using other presentation methods. Due to your current 'investment' I'd say try Silverlight (yes, I read your rant about not doing so). Another option could be Adobe AIR / Flex.

If you port your application this way. You can maintain a single codebase. one that runs on both platforms.

If you wish to spend more time on new features in your current codebase: ignore the Mac users.

You can use Parallels. I have our office software written in C# and WPF and people use it on Mac under Parallels all the time.

As a further note, Parallels lets you run Windows Applications side by side with Mac OSX applications, visible in their own window on the Mac desktop. It also allows copy and paste and drag and drop between Mac and Windows apps.

You can try Nevron Open Vision. It integrates in WPF,WinForms,Silverlight and MonoMac, Xamarin.Mac projects. This is not like running a WPF application on the Mac, but will rather require you to recode your application on the NOV platform. However once you do that your application (or modules) will run on all these platforms from a single code base. A nice example of this approach working is Nevron Writer (part of Nevron Office). It runs on Windows, Silverlight and Mac from a 100% single code base.

It cannot be done. But since your UI is in WPF, what you could do is transform XAML into something else - like GTK# for example. Of course, if you're like me and use lots of .NET 3.5 functionality, that won't help you much.

Actually, there's a CrossOver for you. Other people who answer view from programmer's point. IF I were you, I'll install CrossOver then install .NET 3.5 inside CrossOver and happily run the WPF software.

Wells Fargo downgraded Caterpillar and Deere to ‘market perform’ from ‘outperform’

Wells Fargo said in conversations with contacts the firm sees a “weakening” demand for new equipment, and “shrinking” manufacturer lead times.

“On a relatively lackluster Q3 19 construction dealer channel check feedback, we are downgrading CAT and DE to Market Perform from Outperform. This is mainly due to our perception that (1) US construction equipment demand is at or near peak and likely will decline during 2020 due to flattening activity and a shift to equipment rental from purchase and (2) other businesses within each company’s portfolio will remain flat as a potential 2020 US construction equipment demand drop will put downward pressure on earnings power.”

D.A. Davidson initiated Peloton as ‘neutral’

D.A. Davidson said ahead of the company’s initial public offering, that profitability will likely be “muted” at least for the next few years.

“Peloton has shown impressive growth over the past few years, leveraging its team of world-class trainers to create a compelling platform for exercise enthusiasts. With that being said, recent investments across the company, combined with a very robust marketing spend, will mean that profitability will be muted for at least the next few years. Canaccord said in its downgrade that while Square has done a “commendable job” of creating “competitive” payment products, competition was “increasing.”

“We believe Square is further along than any other company in creating a virtuous payments circle ecosystem. Within this payment ecosystem, a dollar, via the velocity of money, is used over and over again for both merchant and consumer payments. Since the funds stay within the ecosystem, Square can generate repeated transaction fees on these funds. We think that Square has the most feature-rich product sets for merchants and consumers to drive this virtuous payments circle.”

Bernstein downgraded Hershey to ‘market perform’ from ‘outperform’

Bernstein downgraded the chocolate and candy maker on valuation.

“Although we believe that Hershey will continue to enjoy margin improvement and low-single-digit top line growth, we now believe that the benefits of improved input costs and upcoming price increases have largely been recognized by the market: Our thesis was that with the sharp decline in cocoa prices that occurred in late 2016, Hershey would start to see some margin benefit once longer term hedges rolled off. This started to happen in 2H:18 as gross margins began to surprise to the upside after a particularly difficult year with freight cost inflation in 2H:17 and 1H:18. Going forward, we expect that the 10% price increase on instant consumables, will benefit the company on both the top and bottom line in 2020 and beyond, although we also believe that this is now largely priced into the stock.”

Nomura Instinet upgrading Activision Blizzard to ‘buy’ from ‘neutral’

Nomura said the game-maker had momentum from the company’s August launch of “World of Warcraft Classic” and positive reception surrounding the October launch of “Modern Warfare”.

UBS upgraded AbbVie to ‘buy’ from ‘neutral’

UBS upgraded the biopharmaceutical company based on optimism surrounding its acquisition of Allergan and the ability of key growth assets to offset the impact of declining Humira sales.
