Likethemes 1995 IDM / Ambient Techno

Dang, man, those fellas at Warp Records really unlocked something special in the early 90s when they and their peers figured out how fucking good it sounded when you took Eno-esque ambient synth textures and paired them with IDM and techno rhythms 🤩. This mid-90s 12-inch here called Likethemes wasn't a Warp release itself, but the small Likemind collective and label that released it still counted some of those Warpers among their very own ranks, like the duo of B12, who appear here as Redcell, and Andy Turner from Black Dog Productions and Plaid, who operates on this release as Tura.

And I know I've made reference to it before, but if you're familiar with the artwork from Warp's own landmark Artificial Intelligence comp—the 1992 album that was responsible for popularizing this whole IDM and ambient/listening techno phenomenon in the first place—this record falls along those same lines; basically, you're gonna be feeling like that totally blissed-out android in the armchair when you put this record on 😌.

I struggle mightily to pick a favorite among this excellent quartet of tunes, though, so the best thing I can say about it is that if you love the earlier days of Warp, before they started signing so many fucking indie bands 😅, there's no way you won't dig the shit out of this Likemind release too. Half an hour of deeply satisfying mid-90s IDM and ambient techno chill, with lush synth backdrops constructed to hit your feels and a cavalcade of rhythms and melodies to get your synapses firing. There's a tendency for the formula that's put on display here to be highly effective, and with this release, specifically, it happens to be enacted at a very elite level. Makes sense then why the average rating on Discogs for this one is so astronomically high at a 4.82/5, because this thing really is damn near spotless 👍.

If you’ve heard of the KLF, you probably know them as a band that burnt a million pounds. But that is only the conclusion to their story. The journey that led them to the Isle of Jura on that fateful August morning in 1994 is even more fascinating.

A journey that includes getting sued by ABBA, gaining a number one single in the guise of a talking car, pioneering at least one genre of dance music and becoming one of the most successful singles bands of the early 90s. They were two men compelled by the forces of chaos to spread as much confusion as possible and they transformed that into a pop career. This is New British Canon and this is the Story of The KLF.

Moby debuted and then? Well, he followed that up with Ambient. The title is evident about the direction of his sonic journey on platter, he travels through the style, which he shall visit a lot later on. To be honest, I tend to think he would be much better off working within the idiom I mentoined alone, yet he's interested in – as we shall see – in many styles. Moreover, Ambient also resembles his introduction in the form of a disc by basically being a collection of tunes rather than album, if you catch my drift. Still, he did overcome such a problem quite soon, though one can laugh over him noticing how the electronic music of the period sucked at LPs. We talked of that here and one is shocked, when a player playing that saw this.

Good morning 🌅. I'm really not much of an ambient head at all, but it's really hard not to absolutely adore this wondrously dubby and graceful remix of UK breakbeat and trip hop legends Coldcut's "Autumn Leaves" that was done by The Irresistible Force aka Mixmaster Morris. Originally released in '93, but still just so timelessly breathtaking to this very day. One of the most essential ambient tracks of the entire decade.

i wonder if you ever thought of how a dick grayson soundtrack would sound like? and i don't really mean movie music, but more like what does this guy actually listen to. what songs do you associate him with? i always thought he'd be stuck in the 80/90/00's pop when it comes to music, plus he could unironically listen to teen beach movie songs or smth. also it's like a thing in the fics that he loves abba, which tbh kind of makes sense?

he’d have a pretty eclectic playlist — i think he’d also be like…. super into django music or salsa (not american-centric + with a great beat and fast pace). i think the all pop answer is kind of boring, partially because it’s hard to be edgy when voulez vous queues up on ur spotify, and cause i like the idea that dick wasn’t born/raised in america so he’d have more diverse music tastes. when im writing about him i listen to a lot of florence and the machine, stromae, dom fera, dijon, stevie nicks, ceumar, asa, and kylie minogue, so interpret that how u will.

because my man hates silence, i’d say he also has a youtube playlist of hyper specific ten hour ambient and asmr videos. titled things like “midnight on the subway and the guy next to you is possessed by the unholy lord of darkness” and “late 90s hits but it’s raining and you’re in the other room” and we can’t forget the classic “you’re alone in the woods but you can hear music in the distance and have no choice but to follow”
