A little-noticed research revolution confirms that our family courts are damaging the health of our children on a daily basis.

In 2014, three separate and independent groups of experts reviewed decades of child development research. They found that after parents separate or divorce, children do much better with shared parenting — joint custody — on multiple measures of wellbeing than with single parenting. Yet in more than eight out of 10 custody cases today, one parent (usually the mother) is awarded sole guardianship.

The negative impact on our children is dramatic. For instance, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Census Bureau, children raised by single parents account for:

63 percent of teen suicides,

70 percent of juveniles in state-operated institutions,

71 percent of high school dropouts,

75 percent of children in chemical abuse centers,

85 percent of those in prison,

85 percent of children who exhibit behavioral disorders

And 90 percent of homeless and runaway children.

Last year’s formation of Gov. O’Malley’s Commission on Child Custody Decision Making is a promising start to tackling the problem. However, much work remains to ensure that more children experience the benefits of shared parenting, which include fewer behavioral and emotional problems, higher self-esteem, better family relations and better school performance than children in sole custody arrangements, according to 2002 Maryland research. Psychologist Robert Bauserman, then of the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, conducted a meta-analysis of 33 studies between 1982 to 1999 that examined 1,846 sole-custody and 814 joint-custody children and found that children in joint custody arrangements were as well adjusted as intact family children on the same measures.

As the International Council on Shared Parenting put it in July, “shared parenting is a viable post-divorce parenting arrangement that is optimal to child development and well-being, including for children of high conflict parents.” This represented the consensus of nearly 100 experts from over 20 countries. Similar sentiments were recently expressed by the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts (“Children’s best interests are furthered by parenting plans that provide for continuing and shared parenting relationships “), and by 110 experts around the world who endorsed a consensus statement published in February the journal of the American Psychological Association (“shared parenting should be the norm”).

Shared parenting is also better for parents. The claim is often made that joint custody exposes children to ongoing parental conflict. In fact, the studies in Mr. Bauserman’s review found lower levels of conflict with shared parenting, possibly by disposing of the winner-loser feelings that come with a sole custody decision. Shared parenting also gives each parent a break from continuous child care responsibilities.

Towson dad Mark Cyzyk reports that, “12 years out” his teen-aged daughter is thriving. She recently brought home straight A’s, has a good group of friends and appears well adjusted. “For as far back as she can remember,” Mr. Cyzyk said, “she’s had two homes, two extended families, and now with remarriages that’s four extended families, all of whom care for her deeply. I couldn’t be more proud of her and am lucky to have been awarded shared physical custody years ago. But I should not have had to rely on luck — nor should she.”

And neither should the other Maryland children whose parents separate or divorce. The alternative to reform in Maryland is a continuation of the one-size-fits-all tradition of giving sole custody to one parent. This is the outcome in more than 80 percent of cases, so that 35 percent of American children are being raised by only one parent, according to the U.S Census Bureau. In some cases, one parent has walked away from the children. But in most cases, the family courts have created a sole custody arrangement even though both parents are fit and both wish to remain closely involved with their children.

Governor O’Malley’s commission holds out hope that family structure after separation or divorce will become part of Maryland’s dialogue about children’s health, emotional balance, educational difficulties, substance abuse problems, bullying and violence. Family court reforms that return both parents to 35 percent of our children where possible would help them in all these realms at no cost to the taxpayer, while bringing children what they most want: two loving parents actively involved in their lives.

So ... I've been extra stressed the last few days ... the antidepressant is not doing very good job, I can't sleep well, I'm eating waaay over my limit (In the last 5 days BINGED 2 days and ate between 900-1450 for 3 days), I've been so irritated and snappy with everyone ... I couldn't sleep so I spent my alone time cleaning for over 2 hours then did a 30 minute workout and went to shower only to have a huge panic attack ... everyone was asleep and I really though I was gonna d1e alone on the bathroom floor ... Unfortunately I didn't ... then I managed to fall asleep somehow till Dad woke me up to eat ... I had what I planned to eat and my net cal intake stayed below the limit (600 cals) ... BUT OF COURSE I HAD TO BE AN IDIOT AND STRESS EAT CAUSE I HAD TO TEXT SOMEONE ... I was craving something spicy so much I was actually crying ... I ate lots of bread with pepper paste (I know it sounds gross ... I was tired, lazy and I just wanted to feel a tiny bit less stressed) ... Total cal intake = 1903 cals ... total burned cals = 814 cals ... Net = 1089 cals ...

On the veil

TW: Discussion of suicide and suicidal thoughts

Thanks to @four2andnew for this post responding to the meta I posted earlier - the post shares some really thought-provoking reflections on the veil, and why Harry, Luna, Neville and Ginny are the characters most drawn to this boundary between this life and the next.

In many ways, it seems very possible that all characters entranced by the veil might well have experienced suicidal thoughts or suicidal ideation. I’m writing a Ginny-centric piece at the moment, and it’s a prospect I’ve been thinking a lot about: both the context of both Ginny’s lingering guilt, but also whether her desperation to be rid of Riddle and the diary horcrux, or to stop people getting hurt on her account, might also led to her a very dark place in the year she was possessed.

That said, I have come down on the side of thinking to that characters’ response to the veil represents less a present or past desire to end their own life, than a curiosity about what happens after death. I think that’s why Luna, a character defined by her curiosity, her own experience of grief, and her acceptance of mysteries and magic much greater than herself, finds such peace with the idea of the veil. Hermione shares no signs of this speculative interest in death or what comes after, and fears when other character's seem fascinated or even attracted to it. Ron repeatedly shares a fear of death, sometimes - sorry Ron, love you! - even sounding a bit like Voldemort about it (Ron asks: 'What's worse than death?' OotP, 100 - later, Voldemort says: 'There's nothing worse than death, Dumbledore!' OotP, 814).

It's such an interesting question, then: why is it Harry, Neville and Ginny that are the three most entranced by the veil, aside from Luna?

Harry's curiosity about death is a persistent theme throughout the series, and is in some ways the most obvious. But Neville's view of death is less clear, and it's something I think a lot about. In OotP, Moody says of Frank and Alice Longbottom: 'Better dead than what happened to them.' (173, US edition). I’m so taken with idea that this idea that the people talk about the Longbottoms as suffering a fate worse than death, in ways that might well have changed how Neville views death - that he might fear death less than other terrible things that can happen to a person.

That Ginny would have this curiosity and/or a belief in some form of life after death is fascinating to me. I think a lot about where that came from. Until the end of the series, Ginny's experiences of loss are less acute that other character's - the deaths of her uncles happens before she's born, for instance, and the deaths that occur before the final battle (Sirius, Dumbledore, Moody) affect her, but much more indirectly than they do other characters.

Two helpful things have shaped how I've thought Ginny's views of death. One is the train station by dirgewithoutmusic, which is a fic that explores Ginny's experiences of hovering on the border of life and death in the Chamber. It's so compelling as an exploration of what Ginny might have gone through as the life slips from her as the Horcrux Riddle drains her soul from her, and I've sort of accepted it as a headcanon now.

The other is this really insightful meta by @thegirlwhowrites642 on the significance of Ginny and Riddle being the two characters with wands made of yew. I wonder if, in Ginny's interactions with the diary, she and Riddle ever discussed their shared wand woods, and if Riddle ever conveyed or alluded to his enormous fear of death. It seems likely Ginny would think a lot about why Voldemort would trap a part of himself in a diary, an obvious sign of a quest for immortality even if Ginny doesn't know anything about the horcruxes. (I also just love the idea of a yew tree growing over Ginny's grave after her death: of new life growing after she's gone, a sign that she understood something about death that Harry also knew, and that Riddle never did. It's the same idea that is inscribed on Lily and James' gravestones: the last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.) I think she and Harry would, one day, discuss these things, but even in its unspoken form in the series, I think it's the basis of a lot of really profound mutual understanding between the two of them.

watching recordings of this stage genuinely makes my ears hurt because of the crowd noise and i also find the 132843 videos and photos so hard to keep track of so i was like... fuckit, let me transcribe it once and for all so i can have access to a written recap for reference! figured i'd post here in case it's of any use to anyone else... i compiled different fan-posted material to provide visuals from multiple angles whenever possible since i wanted to piece together a somewhat comprehensive summary; sources are linked but if any ops run across this post lmk if you'd like something removed 🙏

Parasocial Oscar and Landoscar analysis ahead u have been warned.

Contextually, 2020 Oscar was finally pushing open the door to the world of F1 as a potential driver (Mark Webber management, Renault Sport Academy, Eurocup Championship, etc.) and that fact combined with still being a schoolboy, surrounded by mates who actively followed his career and were his personal hypemen definitely made Oscar a bit of a hotshot to gossip about. Sure, he's kinda a nerd who games and races but also he's got great grades and a pretty girlfriend and he's coworkers with max fewtrell, best friend of emerging F1 heartthrob, lando norris, so really the cards were lining up in his favor. And yet none of that success (both socially, as it appeared to his peers, and personally, career-wise) went to Oscars head. Rather, he oozed this dorky endearing confidence that planted the seed of cool self-certainty that'd follow him into his F1 career. I mean from the very start, we can witness how Oscar took everything in stride, building a strong sense of self over easily inflating his ego.

This got kinda long so the rest goes under the cut for organizing sake!

Then, observing his Prema years, Oscar was newly thrust into a whole new team vibe. NGL watching Prema vids was what initially helped me understand Oscar better/made me like him bc we get the most clear display of his lack of ego. There seemed to be a general understanding coming out of this content: the media took an exorbitant amount of energy and wasn't at all conducive to developing his racecraft. buuuuuut regardless Oscar maintained an attitude of these people are my closest thing to family out here, they care about my wellbeing and my success and god damn it if they wanna take photos in matching Christmas PJs then hand over the damn PJs. And that was all of course bolstered by his growing success and notoriety on twitter. Just as he'd established a strong sense of self from the very start, now his public identity took it's shape in a way that felt honest and lifelike <Insert Clip of Angelina pointing out his messy clothes and Piastri Shrug>. He managed to carve out a niche amongst the Prema cast and it's not that he needed to be funny but if people memed him and laughed then hey if it gets me popularity I'm all for it. 

Honestly when people dog on Oscar, saying he's got no personality it makes me crazy because it's the total opposite! I think the charm in observing his growth from Renault Academy to Prema to F1 is catching how quickly he established an unchanging confidence in not only his racecraft and wheel knowledge but also in his personality- and how that personality shines through in subtle ways. When Lando does his negging, everyone just heard Oscar sing for the first time in McLaren, am I a funny teammate, Oscar takes it in stride. He doesn't blush, nor take insult, because he has no complex - he's confident about who he is, even if people don't find it amusing. Oscar knows he's not too shy to burst into song, it's just that there isn't anyone who needs him to, so why should he? He knows Lando doesn't think he's funny, but it's not like he was trying to be anyways, so what's it matter? On the flip side too, the rare times we get an outward expression of his confidence are GEMS. The Pool Promo, where he *unprompted* shows off with a trickshot and wins, THIS VIDEO where he eggs on Lando to call lies on his confidence, calling out Carlos/Lance when they interfere with his driving, does it please you greatly that you've won before Lando, is max the best driver on the grid, the whole cricket video, etc etc.

(LOL because I write about fashion outside of this blog and someone might appreciate the connection, in my brain I kinda liken Lando and Oscar's respective confidence to loud/quiet luxury. Lando's a OOAK Hot Pink Birkin and Oscar is a Helmut Lang black slack lolol) (Not a diss btw both items have social connotations/importance that we could unpack for hours but I digress)

I digress I digress I digress. Going back to the Prema assigned humiliation rituals. In a way I think Oscar's ethos regarding embarrassment/lack of ego heavily simplifies down to this story. His mom goes on to explain how after winning an award she gave him a big kiss in front of the whole school and, contrary to how most kids would be embarrassed or angry at the sudden loud affection, Oscar just brushed it off like no matter! "He's just resigned to it" <- literally the most OP81 psychoanalysis of all time thank you Nicole Piastri. For Oscar, the implied embarrassment he should be feeling does not register, as he simply receives love without any grievances, and hasn't the mind to worry how everyone else perceives this exchange. I swear I have a point pls stick with me. So, reiterating, this is the Prema treatment, sitting in front of the camera, Oscar resigns to producing content that's at least moderately enthusing because at the end of the day, the love for his team and the people he's working with is what's worth sacrificing mystery or "cool-ness" for. And even that's a bit of a misstep because I don't think he views it as a sacrifice so much as 'being perceived' doesn't fall on his radar of important things at all. Which! is what makes Oscar SO effortlessly nonchalant in an objectively cool way! (like this is where the more surface-level likening to Kimi Raikkonen <certified Ice Man> comes from) (The real Oscar freaks know he's not any cooler than his indifference and he's actually an incredibly endearingly awkward guy. He just doesn't take himself too serious, idk you get it.)

Now continuing down this timeline, F1 Oscar, who's got exponentially more eyes on him and a humongous team of people who's names he is still learning- comparatively, who is the one guy he can definitely remember the name of. In this transfer of teams and people, all this “I love you even if its kinda objectively embarrassing for me” energy Has to go somewhere and where else would it go than the one guy who’s name he can remember; the one guy in the same exact position as him; the one guy who he’s followed and idolized since 14! YEAH YEAH. And now Lando himself is hardly an extrovert like Oscar’s old prema friends/coworkers, so instead of yes I'll do a stupid dance so you can have good content and make your job easier Oscar -Acts of Service- Piastri has kinda got the most easy job in the world of loving Lando —I just want to make eye contact and know you hate/love this as much as I do— Norris. Like they genuinely match each others freaks in the sweetest introverted mutually beneficial way.

When you really dissect Oscar's Prema content, he’s equally expressive to everyone! He stares holes in the heads of Fred/Logan, doubles over laughing at Arthur/Robert, blushes over Angelina's teasing; it's a sanction of his care and attention divulged to each person in his sphere, one slice of the Oscar cake. Now take Lando? He's been treated to the whole Oscar Cake with a side of ice cream and a cherry on top. Like imagine if you had 10 glasses of water and you poured all of that water into one glass. Suddenly it’s overflowing and there’s water all over the table and the mess is apparent to everyone and the waiter is bringing over towels and someone's grandma just fucking slipped in the puddle and there's a baby crying and- right? right. Oscar’s love language that was distributed across an entire team of people now has nowhere to go but Lando. And not only is it love in respect to the game, it's I've known you years before you knew me, I fell asleep to your voice, watched you grow into the man you are today type love. Oscar is folded at the waist drowning Lando, staring at him with the force of 10x one man's ration of love and we are all god's honest witnesses! Yea no wonder he want that cookie so effing bad tf!!!!!

And it’s such a compelling dynamic because Oscar has been ready to transfer that quiet affection since the very beginning (had old pics of Lando on his phone up through his first year of F1 rightttt right) and since the start of it all, we just get front row seats to Lando reacting to this unconditional respect/love. WHICH IS EVEN GREATER FOR THE FREAKS AND THE WEIRDOS BC LANDO IS SUCH A WEIRDO AND HIS COMPLEXES TOWARDS OSCAR ARE SO COMPLICATED. Basically like. idk. I love when they beef bc Oscar is like I love u I love u I love u and landos like idgaf I’m cheating on u actually no I’m sorry come here I will give u silly nicknames reserved for only me to call u, but actually fuck u and ur talent I’m not spraying u w champange but also oh my god I’m a mess come be freaky w me about it,,,,, the put Lando Norris in a scenario versus his own mind agenda is great. (Bringing back the og tag to just say not ln4 hate, i just like to observe him like a bug in a jar and shake the jar hard bc he is a millionaire and my silly wabbit who I experiment on) anyways. Yea. Read your post on why adam was worried for kim in 816 & u were way off & came across as a pseudo intellect lol. Adam was scared b/c he loves/in love w/ her & does not want to lose her. Its that simple. Idk why you overthought & overcomplicate & brought in womens safety into this which yes is a big issue but it was not the forethought in adam’s mind. Yes it seemed like they were still not in a very good place iin 814 and 15 although we cant be 100% sure since 814 and 15 were not adam/kim- pt 1

So a couple of points in answering this. (At this point part two hasn’t come in but I’m very sleepy and wanted to answer this before bed)

1) the meta you’re talking about can be found here, it was written in August 2021 when we didn’t know what was happening. I’m also pretty sure we hadn’t had any BTS of Marina filming yet too.

2) with regards to the “pseudo intellect” I always try to write my metas as persuasive arguments. I lay out the facts, what I extrapolate from them, and try to persuade people to see my point of view. It’s how a meta works. You’re free to disagree, and you don’t need to come into my inbox to tell me.

3) it’s not that simple when it comes to Burzek. These two are the definition of a complicated relationship. He didn’t just have his worries for Kim, he had his worries about Makayla, about potentially ending up as a single parent too. About what would happen to his team if she’s gone for good. Adam’s many things, please don’t do his character a disservice by saying he only cares about Kim. He cares about more than her.

4) why did I overthink? I’m autistic and these are my blorbos. I’ve written 72 fics for Chicago PD since March last year, and 48 of them are Burzek. Last hiatus drove me a lil mad.

5) the violence against women point was brought up because we’ve seen how Adam reacts to rape cases and cases where women are hurt. When Kim’s sister was raped, even in 8x12 when they were tracking the serial rapist and murderer. There’s no way his mind didn’t spiral to that being a possibility - he said it in “what do you think they’re doing to Kim?” (I may have misquoted, I’m not getting the episode up for a quote rn)

6) as I put in the meta, we can tell they weren’t in a good place in 8x14. There was one moment they were even beside each other, and it’s linked in the meta thanks to @adamruz’s gifs. That’s why I had this idea.

In summary, don’t come into my askbox to pick apart a year old meta about my blorbos, I’m too tired and hot to be polite about it today.

Durante su visita a Córdoba, el Delegado de la Secretaría capacitó a los integrantes de los diversos Comités de Contraloría Social que estarán a cargo de la supervisión de cuatro obras que actualmente se realizan en el municipio con recursos federales, y que tendrán gran impacto para los cordobeses, puesto que conllevan una inversión superior a los 100 millones de pesos, refirió el Contralor Municipal del Ayuntamiento de Córdoba, Lauro Ramos Olmos. El Contralor dijo que, debido a la importancia en cuanto a la inversión de estos cuatro proyectos que la federación realiza en el municipio, es que refuerza la capacitación entre los integrantes de los Comités de Contraloría Social, que son aquellos que les permite a los beneficiarios, verificar de manera organizada el cumplimiento de las metas y la correcta aplicación de los recursos públicos asignados a los programas de desarrollo social. Actualmente, la SEDATU ejecuta la construcción del “Centro de Rehabilitación y Plaza Cívica Toxpan”, la cual dado el valor histórico, cultural y arquitectónico se propone vincular este espacio a través de los patios que está conformado por tres crujías en donde se distribuye el programa: crujía de gobierno, de valoración médica y de tratamientos y se contempla una dispersión federal de 40 millones 814 mil 427.45 pesos.
