International fleet line-up for 16th Samui Regatta
International fleet line-up for 16th Samui Regatta
SAMUI, Thailand – Samui is set to turn on the style as more than 500 sailors head to the Thai tropical island for some fun in the sun at the 16th Samui Regatta, held 20 – 27 May, 2017. Based at Centara Grand Beach Resort Samui on Chaweng Beach and with support from the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the festival of sail attracts participants from more than 20 countries and has put Samui Island on the map as a world-class sports destination.
Now in its 16th year, the regatta maintains is prime position as the final event in the season-long AsianYachting Grand Prix championship and the best sailors from Hong Kong, Singapore and around Asia, as well as from as far afield as Australia and Europe, come together for five days of competitive sailing in the warm waters of the Gulf of Thailand.
“Samui Island is known for its excellent sailing and onshore hospitality. Centara Grand Beach Resort Samui is the perfect host for the regatta, providing an unmatched venue for post-race celebrations and the ever-popular final night Gala Dinner, while on-the-water sailors will be in for some very competitive sailing,” commented Simon James, Race Director.
Frank Pong and his multinational crew on the 76-foot Jelik are up against a trio of TP52s in IRC 0 including defending champion THA 72 (ex Provezza), skippered by Kevin Whitcraft, Team Hollywood (AUS), skippered by Ray Roberts, and Freefire (HKG), skippered by Sam Chan. Taking on the bigger boats is 2011 winner Marcel Liedts, who will be racing his Ker 46 Zannekin (HKG) at the regatta for the first time.
In the fast forties division, IRC 1, the Ker 43 Black Baza (HKG) are looking to place well in an attempt to protect their AsianYachting Grand Prix lead and defend their 2015/16 title, though they’re up against some formidable competition in the likes of the Sydney GTS 43 EFG Mandrake (HKG), who will be competing at their 16th Samui Regatta this year, the Club Swan 42 Loco (USA), Farr 40 Ramrod (AUS), Sydney 40 Emagine (AUS), Beneteau First 44.7 Fujin (AUS), and an all-Chinese entry on the Beneteau First 40.7 Ocean Night (CHN).
Joining the racing fleets is a Cruising class dominated by top Thailand-based boats – Lady Bubbly (AUS), SailQuest Hi Jinks (USA) and Nawin Sri Kham (THA) – and a revived Multihull class fleet including two Corsair Pulse 600s Pixalux and H30 Multihull Solutions.
“Not only do we have some top boats and skippers entering again this year, the crew lists are littered with names with CVs including America’s Cup, Volvo Ocean Race, World Match Racing Tour and more,” added James.
The regatta kicks off with youth sailing on the opening weekend (20th and 21st) followed by the opening party at Zico’s Brazilian Grill & Bar. Five days of racing are scheduled for the keelboats and multihulls with daily prize-givings on the beach and a Reserve Day on Thursday 25th. The regatta wraps up on Saturday 27th with a lavish Gala Dinner presented by Centara Grand Beach Resort Samui.
For those wishing to follow the action, a spectator boat provided by Serenity Yachting leaves Chaweng Beach in front of Centara Grand Beach Resort Samui every race day and costs 800THB/ person/ day. Bookings are essential – contact Emily on +6695 4175750 or book at the regatta office at Centara Grand Beach Resort Samui.
The 16th Samui Regatta will take place 20th to 27th May, 2017 headquartered at Centara Grand Beach Resort Samui, and is organised by Regattas Asia in conjunction with the Samui Yacht Club Regatta, under the auspices of the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand, the Municipal of Koh Samui and the Sports Authority of Thailand.

Samui Regatta sets the standard for sports tourism on Samui Island
Samui Regatta sets the standard for sports tourism on Samui Island
Samui Regatta contributes significant revenues to the local economy every year. Photo by Joyce Ravara.
Turning 16 this year, Samui Regatta has grown to attract the best yachts in Asia and a large spectator following who come to Samui for great sailing, excellent beach parties and to experience the island’s acclaimed hospitality.
Regattas Asia, organisers of Samui Regatta, recently undertook a survey of participants and the findings underscore the importance of the event to the local economy.
“Samui Regatta contributes significant revenues to the local economy every year. Most of the 500 or so participants come from overseas to compete and have high disposable incomes. The majority stay for 7-10 days during the regatta and our research shows that spend on food and accommodation only, is a minimum of 5,000THB/ person/ day. This does not include spend on flights, travel around the island, and other lifestyle and entertainment expenditure,” said Ms. Kae Wattana, Managing Director of organisers Regattas Asia.
The survey’s findings are for the regatta period only and do not take into account holiday time either side of the regatta and return visits to Samui during the year.
In addition to being a tourism destination known worldwide for its natural beauty, island culture and delicious cuisine, Samui Island has built a reputation as being a leading yachting destination in the region.
“Samui Island is one of the top tourism and yachting destinations in Asia. We have organised Samui Regatta for 15 years and each year we se the number of yachts that come to the island is growing. I believe this growth will continue as more and more people experience the beauty of Samui and the unmatched sailing it has to offer,” commented Ms. Wattana.
“This year we will again have a spectator boat at Samui Regatta which members of the public and tourists can join to experience the event and learn more about yachting. Our aim is bring the event and yachting closer to people, to increase people’s understanding of yachting, and to attract more visitors to Samui Island,” added Ms. Wattana.
Samui Regatta consists of five days of racing and six nights of parties, including daily prize-givings on the beach and a lavish Gala Dinner hosted by Centara Grand Beach Resort Samui on the final night. The spectator boat costs 800THB/ person/ day (contact Miss Emily +66 (0) 83 638 2966) and tickets are available for the daily prize-givings at 1,000THB/ person/ night (contact Miss Lily +66 (0) 98 269 8735) and for the Gala Dinner at 2,5000THB/ person (contact Miss Katreeya +66 (0) 94 159 4926).
The 16th Samui Regatta will take place 20th to 27th May, 2017 headquartered at Centara Grand Beach Resort Samui and is the season-ending event in the AsianYachting Grand Prix championship. The regatta is organised by Regattas Asia in conjunction with the Samui Yacht Club Regatta, under the auspices of the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand, the Municipal of Koh Samui and the Sports Authority of Thailand.

Bangkok & Coconuts 4th-8th January 2017
The next day we went to explore Bangkok. We took the BTS Sky Train which is a bit like our DLR. Its pretty cool and futuristic, the system is really simple to, so great for tourists. On the map each stop has a number next to it and that is the price of the ticket. The most we paid was 42THB which is around 90p. If you are a bit lost though the staff are more than happy to help.
We took the BTS from On Nut station to Saphan Taksin Station, from there you can get a river boat which stops off at all the main attractions along the Chao Phraya River. It costs 40THB for a single journey, but they also offer an unlimited hop on hop off ticket for 150THB. Its a pretty cool way to see Bangkok, we decided to go and visit the Grand Palace however betime we got there and went through security to the road that leads to it we were told it closed at 3pm! It was so busy around the area especially as the country is in a year of mourning for their late King, thousands of Thai’s were dressed in black paying their respects. We ended up getting our first whole coconut and fruit from the local market there along the river as well as a nice Pad Thai and mango and passion fruit smoothie, so it wasn't all bad.
We walked around then went back on the boat to the night market which is the last stop, they actually run a free shuttle boat from Taskin Station but as it was the end of the day the boat we was on was going all the way to the last stop for the market.(Tip: the boats stop running at 5pm)
The BTS viaduct at night
On the river boat
The market is a must, it reminds me a bit of a more organised Camden/Greenwich market. Rows of undercover stalls run either side of a walk way which houses various food and drink stalls. They are more like small shops than a market stall so it has more of a civilised feel about it. I could of bought so many things there, from hand crafted ukuleles, jewellery, bags, to snail secretion skincare! Seems to be everywhere in Thailand.
Amazing juice, it was like a cross between an orange and a lemon
Walkway to the river boat, really pretty area.
We stopped at Mango Tango for some sticky rice, this is more of a chain cafe so was a little more expensive than the street food places, but it was really good so we didn't mind. For comparison I think it was around 159THB but I think the lowest we've paid on the street was around 40/60THB.
After some more window shopping we had some dinner in one of the outdoor street style restaurants there, again a bit more expensive than your usual street foods but we got two Thai green curries, two rices, two roti’s, a small Chang and a mango juice for around 800THB, (worth noting here they charge for tax and service in most restaurants, so be aware that the cheap meal you think your getting soon works out to be quite expensive.)
The next day we went back to the Palace however it was so busy and crowded that we decided not to do it, also it was 700THB which is quite a lot if your on a budget. So we hired a Tuk Tuk for a couple of hours, for 100THB he took us to see the black Buddha which is for healing, and the happy Buddha also.
Tuk Tuk!
The Buddha was originally black but everyone who visited placed a golden leaf/paper for their wish to Buddha, that is why they appear to be gold.
The “happy” Buddha
He then took us to the Tourist Information Centre so we could book our ticket to Chiang Mai, he waited at all of the stops for us which was pretty good, however when he dropped us back at Wat Pho him and his mate were pissed off that we didn't give a big enough tip. Word of warning I think this was a scam to get us to the Tourist Centre. We were approached by a friendly Thai man who was giving us some information about the area, he then suggested getting the Tuk Tuk and spoke to the driver in Thai and agreed a price of 100THB. We went on our way thinking nothing of it. At the Tourist Centre we asked about the over night train to Chiang Mai but was told its really busy at this time and will be hard to get a ticket and that we should book accommodation with them also, we were both sceptical about this but the way it was done was quite sneaky as they confuse you a bit with prices (they also love to get a big calculator out and tap in a load of numbers and sums which make it even more confusing) stupidly we agreed to the “deal”, but it wasnt till later I worked it all out and realised we had paid £60 each for the night train, transfer and one night stay at B.M.P Residence in Chiang Mai, which they make out to be some nice hotel with pool and free breakfast. Its basically a shit hostel.
We visited Wat Pho (also known as the temple of the reclining Buddha) which was amazing, at only 100THB entry (good for backpackers) it was really worth it, we spent a good couple of hours in there. It is one of the largest and oldest Wats in Bangkok. There are also a group of four large stupas (each 42 metres high) each dedicated to the first four Chakri Kings. It really is a site to see, however even more magnificent was the reclining Buddha. Id seen this in books/online etc. but nothing prepares you for how enormous it actually is. It was built by Rama III in 1832 and represents the entry of Buddha into Nirvana and the end of all reincarnations. It is 15m high and 46m long and is one of the largest Buddha statues in Thailand. The most beautiful part of the Buddha are the feet, these are inlaid with mother of pearl and each divided up into arranged panels displaying auspicious symbols by which Buddha can be identified by, such as flowers, dancers, white elephants, tigers and alter accessories.
Being all spiritual :p
Not actually sure what this does but Ben gave it a good dong !
One of the Stupas, so big it cant fit in the photo!
Local Thai mourners outside the Palace
The Palace at night was beautiful
The rest of our stay in Bangkok was awesome we ended up extending our 3 night stay to 5. We loved our hostel and the location was pretty good, we got the Sky train every day to different places. Mainly temples and eating haha. You should know by now from reading my blog I’m pretty food driven. Thailand is definitely the place for a foodie, so much choice even for a vegan!. Besides the regular tourist attractions there are some great shopping centres, which we spent quite a lot of time in as Ben needed to buy a smart phone.
The best Mango sticky rice (and it was purple!)
If you love shopping you will love Bangkok, it is like London but with manors! Everyone is super friendly and even on the train really respectful of one another, people actually que up for the train! Its so nice, and also everything is spotlessly clean, something we really missed while being in Nepal.
Shopping Centres
MBK – this is the place to go for a bargain, especially if you want a new phone, the fourth floor is entirely dedicated to mobile phones, I think most of the stalls are knock off but there are some legit phone shops there to where Ben ended up buying his.
We both needed hair cuts but stupidly picked Bangkok's version of super cuts! Big mistake, I ended up with an 80s feathered look and Ben looks like a cockatiel. They literally hacked our hair! I was pretty devastated, if anyone knows me you will know that I’ve spent the last year or so trying to grow out colour and my fringe in preparation for travelling, I also want to grow it out to be long but now its above my shoulder with layers! Thank god for head bands, Its been growing pretty quick lately though as I haven't been straightening it so fingers crossed it will grow back soon.
Tip: No matter how much of a budget you are on, do not scrimp and save on a good hair cut or any beauty treatment. Or you will end up looking like me haha.
Besides that disaster I picked up a few bargains and we had a lovely lunch at the Green House (its a restaurant located on the food court floor) I had a veganised Pad Thai and a coconut smoothie, delicious.
Terminal 21 – This is the best shopping centre each floor represents a different city all the shops and décor reflect the culture of each place. We actually came here just to watch the new Star Wars Rogue One movie, but ended up buying a new outfit each to haha. The food court here wasn't as good as MBK so id avoid it and go in an actual restaurant. The cinema was really good however you have to stand up for the Thai National anthem before the film starts which was a little odd (it goes on a bit to).
We didn't do too much else in Bangkok, it was nice to chill and just wonder about in a hassle free environment. We did take a trip to Kaon San Road, which was pretty cool and fun. Its one road lined with shops, stalls, bars, restaurants and massage places. We went for a foot massage which was spot on, they actually do your whole legs, shoulders and back for 150THB which for a half hour sesh is pretty decent. We then went for some street food and Mojito’s, perfect evening.
The start of Kaon San Road
coconut ice cream
mega foot rub!
Street food at night
Another thing Thailand is good for is beauty treatments. After the EBC trek my feet were pretty ruined I also said goodbye to my big toe nail.
As well as this my hands and feet wrinkled up and started peeling, really painful and gross. I actually researched this and apparently this can happen after an illness. So I think my recent stomach virus caused it. I also had mild frost bite on the tips of my fingers and especially my left thumb. (Im starting to regain normal feeling in them now but they are still not 100%)
The lady was not impressed, I’ve never felt so embarrassed, as my feet looked like id been living on the streets bare foot for months. She was lovely though after initially turning her nose up and tutting at the state of them. After a good 45 minutes I walked out with pretty painted toes.
Freshly painted nails in my new knock of Havaianas
I can honestly say that I loved Bangkok, so many people say to me they wouldn't stay there longer than a couple of days, and nearly everyone I’ve met since leaving there are surprised that we stayed there as long as we did. But id definitely go back and do some more tourist things that I didn't get time to do.
The roads are pretty crazy here and its not uncommon to see families riding on a scooter! that being said everyone seems to have some sort of respect for each other on the road, no beeping or arguments like you would get in London.
On the 8th of January we did a little more shopping (mainly for train snacks) had Bangkoks version of an English breaky, which was actually really lovely then said good bye to our hostel host and made our way to the train station to board our over night sleeper train to Chiang Mai.
See you in Chiang Mai!
