Here's my genuine recommendation again for Genmu Senki Leda, a 1985 direct to video film that encapsulates everything really lovely about 80's anime artistically.

Featuring designs and animation direction from Mutsumi Inomata (Tales franchise)

The late Hiromi Tsuru (Bulma) playing the titular character Yohko

Directed & partially Written by Kunihiko Yuyama (Pokemon, Goshogun, Wedding Peach)

Animation produced by Kaname Production, a smaller studio in the 80s made up of former Ashi Production staff

It's also not very long, so if you're a big Japanese animation buff or want to learn more about what was going on in the 80s, I think you owe it to yourself to check it out.

Now that Season 7's first trailer is out, it slightly validated some of my theories about which chapters is going to be adapted — so I decided to make a prediction of what Seasons 7 & 8 could looks like (I mean, we still don't have any confirmation for Season 8, but there's no way we don't get it, right?) I'm probably going to be very wrong but it was fun to try and think about!

I'm going to make the assumption that we'll get 13 episode instead of 11 because of something fun I found out: so far there's been 74 episodes of NatsuYuu (OVAs notwithstanding), which means that if we add two seasons of 13 episodes we'll reach the 100 :) So I hope we actually do get 13 episodes this time (I've also seen some people wondering if we'll exceptionnally get a 22 or 26 episodes season because of the 15th/20th years anniversary, which could be fun but I doubt they'll do that sadly).

For Season 7: I know some people wish the season could start with the exorcist chapters, but I think it makes more sense we begin with a ‘normal’ slice-of-life Natsuyuu episode rather than the more heavy stuff. It’s been seven years, after all; they need to reestablish the series’ characters and world properly, and I think chapter 84 with the clay mini-nyanko is th best one for that. I mean, in this chapter we have: Natsume returning a name, mentions of Reiko & the book, cameos of Tanuma and the Fujiwaras (the anime could probably briefly add Kitanishi, Taki & Sasada too), and a bittersweet story about a yokai Natsume befriends — so I think it’s perfect for a new start to a new season. Then it makes sense to follow this up with the exorcist stuffs in episodes 2 & 3. I'm hesitating which one would go first though; if we follow the manga chronologically then it would be the Hakozaki one, but I think they'll likely choose to reintroduce Natori first... I do believe it's important to introduce Yorishima early on too so that they can later adapt the second Yorishima arc in Season 8, to really establishes him as this new important recurrent character. (Though I wonder if 2 exorcist episodes side-by-side would be too much, so maybe they'll adapt Yorishima intro for ep2, then have another slice-of-life episode, then have the Hakozaki chapter.... who knows)

After that I’m no sure on the order, but there must also be the Taki brother arc for a Taki-focused episode, then the Kitamoto & Nishimura chapters. I think it’d makes sense to adapt both of the Kitanishi chapters in season 7 so that then in season 8 they could adapt the Tenjou-san/painting arc in order to make it feel balanced (or they could do the reverse and adapt Tenjou-san arc before in season 7, but I think it's better if it comes after). And then have the flower bed chapter as another slice-of-life episode (which I think is important to have before the Souko arc thematically). Not gonna lie it really frustrates me that they decided to adapt the Tanuma & Misuzu chapters in a movie, because now Tanuma doesn’t have his own arc like Taki has :( At least he still appears more than her in other arcs, but they’re not focused on him so it’s not the same.

So the Chobi special from Volume 8 might seems weird to be in season 7, and admittedly I doubt it'll ever be adapted (maybe in an OAV?? But who knows) - but I thought about it because of Chapter 108 which is also centered on Chobi. Having the Chobi special before Chapter 108 seemed logical to me, though there's more chance we'll get another special like Special 14 or 18. (UNLESS they manage to adapt the Chobi special with Chapter 108 in a single episode... I dunno).

And there's no way they don't adapt the second teen Natori special, which has to be before Miharu arc. I think the Miharu arc will happens either in the middle or towards the end of the season, but I believe having Souko's arc as the final would be pretty emotionally impactful, with ideally 2 episodes. It’s the origin of the Book of Friends after all, so it’s important to really highlight it (though I doubt they'll do that unfortunately, I think they'll likely try to cram everything into a single episode as usual with the 2 chapters arcs -_-).

For Season 8: I think it makes sense to start with slice-of-life chapters with this season too, but admittedly I wasn't really sure which one. The Ake & Shiro or the origami chapters seems the more likely. Then there's still Special 14, which could also make a fun slife-of-life episode.

The Tenjou-san/painting arc and then the Noren inn arc in this season was more fitting than the last in order to balance the focus on Natsume's school friends - and like I said earlier, even though chronologically it happens later in the manga I think they will adapt the second Yorishima arc as well here. I think it’d make sense they decide to adapt the special with Matoba here too (It could be in Season 7 I suppose? But then it would a wayyy too exorcist-focused season).

What I’m the most confident in is that they’ll decide to end Season 8 with the Homura arc, and that it’ll take 3 episodes. This is such a long, important arc, and if they don’t mess it up it would make an amazing final; especially if after that we don’t get another new season until at least a few years.

(Hopefully we won’t have to wait 6 years for Season 9 afterwards… There was 2 years between Season 2 and Season 3, and then 4 years between Season 4 and Season 5, so if Season 8 is released in 2025 then I hope we’ll get Season 9 in like. 2028-2029. please.)

Anyway, just for fun I tried to imagine what a Season 9 could look like too:

This would make for a super plot-heavy season, but well all the recent arcs ARE very plot-focused lol. I initially thought that maybe the Portrait of a Girl arc could make it more to a potential Season 10 while the younger cousin arc could the final for Season 9, but ending the season on such a personal, Natori-focused arc like that would be a bit... strange. So! If we have Portrait of a Girl as a final, I think it makes sense for the occult salon arc to be at the very start of the season to introduce Shinobu and Clara (I vaguely thought it would be fun if they introduced them in Season 8, but the idea of a whole season where we start with the looming threat of Matoba's mysterious sister only to have her identity revealed at the very end is really cool too). I think the beach chapter too could be nice after the Natori arc as a sort of break before we got back into the heavy plot stuff with the 3rd Hakozaki chapter. I gave Portrait of a Girl 4 episodes here because I think it's what it wolud need to be properly adapted (it IS the longest arc to date after all, with 6 chapters!) but because of that I had to scrap the Hinoe chapter (which could then be adapted into Season 10). However I think it's more likely they adapt it into a three-episodes arc sadly (same thing with the Younger Cousin arc, they'll probably cram it into 2 episodes rather than three...)

And here it is haha. Can't wait to see how completely false my predictions will be lol.

Following this, the still unadapted chapters would include: Chapter 119 (Hinoe/Natsume crossdressing), Chapter 128 (current arc) that would fit into Season 10, then Special 18 (Nyanko meets little boy), Special 20 (movie special), Special 21 (little traveling yokai), Special 22 (Ribbon Nyanko & Mana Kitamoto), all of which could either fit in Season 10 or in an OAV.

I’m watching “Voltron: Legendary Defender” for the first time and these are my compiled thoughts.

And the red one chose Kieth, etc. ?? I guess it makes sense for them to call on other paladins when Shiro “dies” (his ass is not dead, I’m 100% sure of that) but Allura fits Black/Red better imo.

-> this season was huge for klance apparently. They have so many moments together. When they get dragged by evil elsa Lotor to that weird planet and have their lions talk face to face, the shoulder touch, them seeking each other out for/being the first to give the other comfort/reassurance, “Leave the math to Pidge” , Lance being the most upset that Keith isn’t at the parade thing, their teamwork in “Tailing a Comet”, “Yeah, who am I gonna make fun of?”

You guys just kept winning this season honestly slay.

->^When they form Voltron for the first time in the flashback, the colors are brighter, much like the original 80s show’s colors, and the captions later read “Defender of the Universe”, which was the name of the original Voltron show. This is an especially fun detail because not only are they honoring the “original paladins/voltron” of the show’s lore, they are also doing so in reference to the original show itself, which I think is all so beautiful

-> I did some research and it turns out he is in fact 25, I don’t know whether to be happier or sadder for him. On one hand, thank fuck he’s not like 15-17 like the others, on the other hand, he should be at the club. He should be finding love, he should be at his 9-5 paying taxes and doing laundry not having his arm chopped off and replaced with magic and having to fight in the space coliseum and then escaping and having to pilot a giant robot and be a part of an intergalactic war. (I suppose that last part is true for all of them, but the rest is shiro-specific, and it all makes me a little sad)

-> on that note, WHERE did he find a razor. Did he just use a sword or something?? Like in mulan??

-> in “Tailing a Comet”, they apparently meet alternate space reality!Kuvira from atla:lok , and ASR!Bataar Jr. I mean, really, down to the bun and the mole, as well as the controlling dictatorship-esque behavior and the “really, this is actually for their own good” attitude when it comes to said controlling behavior. Did the writers of each show just share ideas or??

-> im so serious with that last question. The thing that came out of the “quintessence rift” that the original paladins had to fight? A dark spirit from LoK: Book 2: Spirits. Whatever tf happened to zarkon when he got too close? When Unalaq got possessed by Vaatu. I mean really, were they just passing cards like go fish?

->I genuinely cried when Keith left for the Blade of Marmora (to save time, I’m gonna start calling them the “Blades” or “BOM”)

-> however, I feel like him leaving for the blades is gonna be really plot relevant later on

-> I think that’s when S3 ended im pretty sure. I don’t have further thoughts other than those I could’ve discussed if I could upload enough pictures for my S4 thoughts that accompanied them.

Like Shiro, his desires affect the whole system, so don't expect anyone to try and shit on him for normality's sake; we've literally all been in his shoes.

His alias contrasts Shiro's directly, both because of his general dark theme, and because of the two's intrinsic connection.

YK WHAT IM MAD ABOUT TODAY

the way vld takes 21st century science fiction and absolutely RAGS ON IT.

(read more for a very longwinded and messy critique/rant about klance, modern science fiction, and my takes on vld's ability to represent queerness)

from what i know and understand and see science fiction as, i'm just sad to know that the vld team had all the resources, popularity, and drive to really embrace the values of new age science fiction with their characters in particular, and failed horribly.

one thing in particular i wanna demonstrate is with klance. yk. queerbaiting. not space operas in particular, but modern science fiction has really become a place for queer/gender non conforming/neurodivergent people to express their worldviews and experiences through a speculative lens. lgbtq+ people have found sanctuary in science fictional spaces for good reason, as it can function to elaborate on experiences from marginalized groups.

anyway, the kind of salvage-esque, 80's futurism vibe we have going on with vld, there's a lot of opportunity for characters to go against the grain in meaningful ways (we had pidge do this, keith's whole character tries this [which is why he should've been gay]).

sf in our age has a very very lucky advantage, we see the legacy of racism, colonialism, toxic masculinity, and sexism in that media, and we have found ways to move the genre out of the hypermasculine fields and into a more diverse and, by all means, productive space.

this is all my personal opinion of course, but i just think that voltron burying some gays, queerbaiting for 8 seasons, and having a cast of cis straight characters is so disappointing to see, knowing how powerful and subversive science fiction can be to represent queer stories. i stand by that if me at age 18 wrote for voltron everything would've been ok.

but, then again, it is my take that if klance had been canon it'd have been really poorly executed (like shiro's arc duh) because they couldn't have written queer characters well if they tried. (them being a group of, i'm assuming, cis straight unskilled writers).

every time i try to be critical about voltron my neck loses all strength and my head lolls to the side because ITS A KIDS SHOW RAYE OH MY GOD BE SO FR but like??? i feel like Basic media literacy tells us that every piece of media says something. it takes a stance. university radicalized me, ok, but everything IS political. but honestly i've gotten to a place in my love for this show where i can understand that, almost every way you look at it, vld is a bad show. if you're not sitting there with daisies dancing over your cerebrum the entire time it's a hard watch past season 2. of course, VA work, art, and most of seasons 1/2 are excused from this, but it's just the WRITING!! it tears everything down with it and it's a really unfortunate fate for this show.

imo it should've ended with a conclusive season 2. maybe a side series where you see what shiro's up to. idk! i remain pissed about the direction the writing took post lion swap, the damage they did to lovable characters like hunk, and lance's whole season 8 fiasco. it's miserable to be a ride or die fan of this show but hey KICK!

Conociendo a... Parte 9 - Shiro

Bueno, ya se analizaron a diversos personajes, desde quienes son actualmente hasta quienes fueron los personajes que sirvieron como base. Me salto toooodos los malos chistes que dije en el post que alguna vez publiqué en aquel grupo (y del cual me autoexilié, historia larga que solo involucra a personas que confundieron el grupo con uno de compra y venta, y no precisamente de casquería).

Así que aprovechando el año bisiesto y el inicio del mes de febrero, el siguiente análisis será para un personaje que obtuvo mucho amor, tanto, que los productores tuvieron que revivirlo... eso o los fans para nada violentos los hubieran desvivido a ellos.  Damas,  caballeros, quimeras, helicopteros y aliens residentes en el estado de Tamaulipas, con ustedes les presento:  El análisis a Shiro.

A SIMPLE VISTA

Tenemos a un joven adulto de marcados rasgos asiáticos, vestido en tonalidades negras y grises. Lo primero que llama la atención es su brazo prostético de color plateado que sustituye a la mano derecha, un mechón de cabello blanco, siendo que anteriormente su cabello era completamente negro y una cicatriz recorriéndole la nariz de manera horizontal. A primera instancia, su apariencia podría intimidar a un desconocido, sin embargo a los pocos minutos se habrá conocido a una persona confiable, atenta, y que se toma en serio su deber. Sus ojos de color oscuro aún muestran a una persona que agradece estar viva y pretende seguirlo, a pesar de las cosas horribles que pudo haber vivido. Dejemos de lado lo “duro” de sus facciones, ya que, con las personas en quienes confía, ha mostrado una mirada de compresión que no nos esperaríamos de alguien así.

ANTECEDENTES 

Bueno, ya todos nos sabemos los spoilers, pero aun así, si usted es nuevo o apenas acaba de leer estos pseudo-análisis, debo advertirles que aquí va a haber hartos SPOILERS de la serie “Beast King GoLion”, quien avisa no es traidor.

Tan alegre y dicharachero como siempre...

Anime/Serie 80´s 

A diferencia del resto de nuestros arrojados, valientes y greñudos pilotos, el personaje de Sven (su nombre en esta adaptación) tiene como base a dos personajes: los hermanos Takashi y Ryo Shirogane. ¿Por qué? Por cuestiones de censura.

En el anime original, Takashi es herido de muerte por una robo-bestia después de salvar a Isamu (Lance), siendo su lugar ocupado por la princesa. Más adelante, conocemos a su hermano Ryo, quien al enterarse de la muerte de Takashi, jura venganza contra el imperio Galra. Como saben, en Estados Unidos te pueden vender armas en cualquier lado, pero los niños no deben ver morir a los personajes en una caricatura porque se podrían traumar, por eso quienes adaptaron el anime decidieron que el personaje de Sven seguiría vivo mediante trucos de edición, así de simple.

El Takashi original era una persona muy MUUUUY seria, muuuy seca y muuuuy sangrona. Eso sí, era bueno para lo que hacía y lo que hacía no era bonito, parecía ser el mayor del grupo y tener más experiencia que Akira (Keith) en esto de pilotear. Por su seria personalidad y no abrir la boca más que para monosílabos se ganó el sobrenombre “Danmari” (“Quiet” en inglés, “Tranquilo” o “Silencioso” en español).

El mencionado gemelo menor con un carácter de los mil demonios 

En cuanto a Ryo… de lo poco que vi es que era el menor de los gemelos y tendía a ser más… ¿explosivo? ¿comunicativo? Un idiota y un insolente, pero decía más palabras que su carnal. Y si pretenden echarse los capítulos en japonés con subtítulos, no les recomiendo que se encariñen con el. Uno por el reverendo idiota que es y dos, porque termina tan muerto como su gemelo.

(Y ya que ando aquí, aprovecharé para decir: “¡En tu cara Ryo! ¡En Voltron VOS NO EXISTÍS!!!”)

Tanto en el anime como en la adaptación, Sven pilotea el León Azul, aunque después de ser gravemente herido… dos veces, fue Allura quien se encargó del felino. Su personalidad era calcada a la del “alegre” Takashi: serio, callado y algo misterioso, pero después de ciertos eventos se volvió algo más violento y directo, por no decir que quedó bien traumado y ya no era la persona de antes. Cuando el planeta donde se encontraba fue atacado por la armada Drule, él se encontró a una chica, la princesa Romelle, con quien se aliaría y mucho después comenzaría una relación con ella. De hecho, el cambio más notorio entre Takashi/Ryo y Sven fue su relación con Romelle, a quien se referiría como ella como "alguien que lo salvó". Recomiendo que si pasean por Tumblr lean sobre este par, el asunto está bonito. Shirogane se traduce como “plata”.

Cómic DDP

El noruego siendo mal influenciado por una muchachona... y a su lado una tal Merla Ay mamá, esta parte está más complicada. En el comic de DDP lo conocemos como “Sven Holgersson”, con 27 años nativo de Noruega, se trata de un ex miembro de una fuerza elite equivalente a los SEALS de Estados Unidos. Debido a que falló en una misión de recuperación, se le relegó a “trabajo administrativo”, y así anduvo en los escritorios hasta que cierto coronel lo invitó a una misión con otros tipos tan “sociables” como él para buscar un robot legendario en un planeta distante. A diferencia de la serie animada, Sven nunca pilotea el León Azul, esto debido a un fallo en el cerebro (si está loco, traumado o tiene una bala en la cabeza, no sé, nunca leí este cómic) que evitó que se conectara. Por este chistecito en su cabeza, Haggar y Merla pudieron mal-influenciarlo para que traicionara a sus compañeros. Después de un evento que involucraba al Principe Lotor y chocar la nave en otro planeta, Sven conoce a Romelle, y las cosas no cuajan porque el comic quedó en “hiatus” desde entonces y ya no sabemos que carambas pasó con el noruego.

ESTEREOTIPO QUE REPRESENTA

Tomemos en cuenta esto. De GoLion a Voltron y de Voltron a VLD hay muuuuchas diferencias, aun así, en sus primeras encarnaciones a Sven le tocó ser el miembro serio del equipo.

Ya para cuando llegamos a VLD tenemos al experimentado del equipo con un plus de hermano mayor, rol que el propio Keith menciona. Ya si nos ponemos mas específicos, podría tratarse del miembro del equipo con pasado tortuoso... y no solamente por el año sabático que se aventó con los galra.

Un detalle para pensar es el hecho de la popularidad, el verdadero poder especial, como le llamaría Deadpool. Tanto en su primer encarnación en GoLion como en esta última versión, el personaje de Takashi era muy querido por el publico (en el caso del calladote, los japoneses lo adoraban... para que vean que el asuntito de Zoro no es tan moderno como ustedes creían), por lo que lo “revivieron” de manera simbólica con un gemelo idéntico. ... Me recordó al detalle del personaje de Presea en Magic Knigth Rayearth... aunque el personaje en cuestión fue revivido por otras cuestiones.

En cuanto a nuestro Shiro, sip, definitivamente lo querían desaparecer, pero el cariño que le mostró el público y hasta el propio señor Keaton fueron suficiente como para que el equipo de animación lo dejaran vivo... aunque fuera en un clon.

OPINIÓN PERSONAL

¿La verdad? Pobrecito Sven, en Latinoamerica nadie lo recuerda (los que vimos la serie sabíamos inconscientemente que había “entregado el equipo”), nadie lo respeta y ni siquiera es mencionado en "The Third Dimension". Neta, pobrecito señor Holgersson, nadie lo respeta, ni vivo, ni muerto, ni desaparecido. T___T

En cuanto a su nueva encarnación, me pareció curioso que mantuviera su nombre original del anime y en cuanto vi su rediseño, pueeesss me puse medio simp. Ejem, al principio me pareció muy… erm… pues no es tan “ñoño” y correcto como Steve Rogers en el UCM, pero tiene lo suyo. Pero esa primera impresión se fue alejando pronto, y que bueno. Porque, ¿Qué tan traumado/loco/atarantado puede quedar alguien después de ser esclavo/gladiador/conejillo de indias de los galra y conejillo de indias en la Tierra? ¿Eh? Poner ese detallito en una serie para niños se antoja interesante. Como puse en el A SIMPLE VISTA, Shiro parece ser una persona que aún ve lo bueno en la vida pese a como le fue, y siempre se muestra protector y firme con sus compañeros… menos cuando no están luchando/entrenando, ahí deja ver que su carácter no es TAN serio y formal como sus encarnaciones anteriores. Me pareció bien que se refiriera a sus malas experiencias con cierta ironía cómica y que siempre trata de hacer bien las cosas por los demás, tiene un poco de, valga la rebuznancia, humor negro en su repertorio. Sin embargo, a pesar de la experiencia con la que cuenta y ser el mayor de todos, tiene muchas cosas por aprender o sobrellevar, sin contar que debe esclarecer muchas cosas de su pasado. ¿Personalmente? Nuestro piloto experto tiene habilidades de líder porque no le quedó de otra, al menos durante las dos primeras temporadas ¿había otro que pudiera cumplir con el trabajo? Su papel como mentor fue cumplido, aunque después aparecería en la tercera. Shiro puede recordar al personaje que quiere redimirse por sus acciones en el pasado, aunque, en su caso ¿Cuál pasado? Ni el se acuerda. No se, pero su principal motivación es hacer lo correcto, porque es correcto y porque no le queda de otra. ¿Pero porqué tan empeñado en hacer bien las cosas? ¿Que cosas habrá hecho antes? En lo que Dreamworks se dignaba a esclarecernos lo de la "Operación Kuron", me dio por pensar que el tiempo que el león negro ignoraba olímpicamente a Shiro bien podría ser por el trauma que tuvo al estar de nuevo de conejillo de indias (aludiendo al tiempo que Sven estuvo traumado en la serie del 84). Pero luego resultó que las teorías de clones tenían TODA la razón... Y con los detalles que nos dieron en la SDCC, eso explicaría el porqué de sus acciones, forma de pensar y el porque si o si le recalcaba a Keith que quería que él liderara Voltron. Esto me da a pensar que nuestro "Space Dad" hacía todas esas acciones... al menos en las primeras dos temporadas, porque trataba de redimirse, dejar las cosas listas antes de "irse". Y ese detallito, mas el plus de lo que dejó en la Tierra  nos deja a un personaje que ha sufrido demasiado, y que a pesar de su experiencia y fuerza, lo queramos proteger con nuestra negra alma. Pero en lo que son peras y son manzanas, dejemos en que en cualquiera de sus versiones, Shiro es de una manera u otra alguien que te muestra el camino y algunas especificaciones para poder realizarlo. Esté ahí o no. Y que no importa lo experimentado que sean tus superiores o mayores, son humanos como uno, y en sus tiempos oscuros necesitan apoyo. Hasta el más mínimo sería una luz potente para ellos.

hi, shiro! before i approach your (wondrous) proposition in regard to henry and modern novels, i would like to quickly address your postscript in parentheses — it needs to be stated that i completely agree with you.

i do not see henry as an overly/actively sexual being, and even believe he may be ace (or aro, as you said) in canon. however, i do believe he has the potential to experience some sort of sexual liberation/prospering upon meeting the right person who would be able to allure and introduce him to the world of intimacy in a fitting way. that's simply my take on it. you can read more about it here.

now, to the books. he would have a lot to say about modern novels' takes on greek mythology and the iliad/odyssey. after all, he's a devoted homeric scholar. after you introduce him to the concept of the book (let's take the song of achilles as an example) and lend it to him, he will have read it in record time (he'd be done by the next morning) and then the dam would break — he would be incredibly condescending and judgmental about it all. you would definitely never hear the end of it and would certainly earn a myriad of exasperated, snooty glances from him on the daily. he'd be dropping smartass hints and crude remarks, pointing out what was wrong and what was misinterpreted, all the while completely misregarding your futile attempts at preaching fictional liberty. he would not even hear it.

however! i believe, were he to get intoxicated and thus unwound enough, he would definitely be able to bear the book a little more. it'd have to be a late night on which he finds himself entertaining an overly mellow disposition, perhaps drunker than usual. then, you'd use the perfect opportunity of him being softened and whip out the novel in order to bring your point across with more ease, as he's more likely to let you speak and also listen, and simultaneously less likely to interrupt or dismiss any of your attempts to clear your stance.

this is when you'd talk, possibly whilst lying in his lap and having him raking his fingers through your hair — about the meaning, the importance of taking artistic liberations, the crossing of boundaries, and similar things. he would listen, of course, and absorb the information; he wouldn't comment, but you'd just know that he's contemplating everything.

after that, i see him being more lenient and tolerant with the books you introduce him to — he'd be more willing to read them and less likely to bash them immediately. of course, he still would — just not as harshly. in addition, he would secretly love more nightly sessions with you resting in his lap and rambling about the books you enjoy. he would find himself enjoying them more solely because of that, as well.

i've been talking abt my voltron playlists and @iveofficiallygonemad asked to hear them and i want to share with anybody who wants!! i know they're not perfect, i'm working on them & trying to make them better. if you have any recommendations for any of them, let me know!! there's like A Lot and i want to give a lil explanation for most of them, so i'm putting them under the cut ^-^

SO first i have my favorite one <3 it's just. all of them. it's the whole team. it's a mess and it's a bunch of different genres because it's them fighting over the aux cord on a road trip. it's them trying to make each other laugh or annoy each other or play something catchy enough it will infect everyone in the vicinity with brain worms.

Hunk: i'm pretty happy with my Hunk playlist! chill vibes. he strikes me as the kind of guy who listens to calm music to try to find his own calm, and that's what i got here :)

Pidge: this is messier and less cohesive than my usual playlist because frankly i think pidge would have a shit taste in music. all over the board. this is a mix of meme songs and 8-bit covers and vocaloid and stuff that i think pidge would genuinely connect with, and i think pidge listens to all their music on shuffle without any regards for genre or mood because they're a gremlin. nobody gives pidge sole control of the aux.

Coran hears 80's music for the first time and loses his mind. He thinks ABBA is humanity's single greatest achievement.

Lance: i have ideas about where I'm going with this but haven't really settled yet. Lance seems like the kind of boy that loves to dance (is that canon? i forgot) so most of these are Bops That Make You Move in some way or another. he likes to present an upbeat face to the world, so there's no angsting in this playlist! we are clinging to the things that make us happy with both hands until our knuckles turn white!

Keith: i'm gonna be honest. i made him a playlist but i honestly don't think he cares about music very much. it's very important to some people! he's just not one of them! i haven't cracked this playlist open in a while but i'm pretty sure it's full of songs that i think he would conceivably train/work out to.

Shiro: this playlist involves the dumbest headcanon i have for shiro that has just not left me alone since i first thought of it. most of the playlist reflects the fact that he had an emo phase in middle school (that one isn't a headcanon, you just have to look at him to know) but BUT there are a few songs on here that are on here because. little known fact. he also went through a Twilight phase that he told nobody about. (keith knows. keith was there.) he has the entire twilight soundtrack memorized. he moved past the story but the music stays forever. he used to daydream about slow dancing to Flightless Bird, American Mouth. the first time Coran mentions that they have to avoid a place because there's a supermassive black hole there, he has to bite his tongue in order to keep a straight face. do NOT ask me why i believe this so wholeheartedly.

Allura's playlist sucks right now. I think it's because in my heart of hearts i know that, were she on earth today, she would go fucking nuts for taylor swift. i have ambivalent feelings for taylor swift. i cannot do allura justice like this. if you see my vision and have recs as to what might actually fit her, PLEASE.

Klance: i haven't done it yet but i'm gonna go through this and sort it to be a sort of progression of their relationship, starting with the more combative Rivalry songs, then slipping into "oh shit oh shit" songs, then maybe ending on the more lighthearted purely romantic songs <3

So I was listening to Mariya Takeuchi's 1984 hit "Let's Get Married" and I was struck by the sort of whirling violin-effect that features towards the end of it, and I was like "Huh, that sounds familiar", and eventually I realized that it reminded me of "Komm, Susser Tod". This is probably a longshot, but I was curious if you knew: Is there any plausible through-line from Takeuchi to EoE, or is that just a commonplace musical effect (at least in JPOP)?

Aw, I can see that! And I think yeah its more about how KST has a bit of a throw-back pop style, with some western influences, and 80's citypop is doing the same thing (Lets Get Married even launches with a sample from the Wedding March!). That style of synth-y strings as a backing for escalatory moments is common enough in the genre, so I wouldn't think its anything like a reference.

But the general connection is there - the composer of KST is Shiro Sagisu (same guy for the rest of Eva's soundtrack), and he had a long, long history in the 80's through the 90's of working for pop singers. He wrote or arranged or contributed to dozens of pop groups before he became more heavily focused on anime. He even technically collaborated with Mariya Takeuchi! They both worked on the 1986 album Crimson, which was helmed by fellow pop singer Akina Nakamori, Takeuchi contributed several guest tracks to the album, and Sagisu arranged much of the music; though I don't think he arranged any of Takeuchi's specifically, real fly-by-grazing moment. So when Anno asked Sagisu to give him something retro-poppy for the moment, he was definitely the guy who was gonna make something like an 80's citypop piece, and qualified to do it.

Evangelion's soundtrack is also just a very string-heavy piece of work, so I think that helps contribute to the similar vibe. Even KST's alternative that they commissioned but never used, Everything You Ever Dreamed, is a very pop-string piece, even if its tone is much more mellow. They certainly has an aesthetic vision.

Conociendo a... Parte 8 - Romelle

Terminó el show ya hace varios años y la gente terminó ofendida, insatisfecha, furiosa, odiosa (más) y pidiendo cambios y despidos a cierta paginuca. Pero como dije antes, que el show haya terminado no quiere decir que acá el changarro cierre abruptamente. Vamos por la amada y odiada por igual sobreviviente alteana chismosa cuya encarnación original es mucho más desafortunada que la suerte del mismo Shiro. Y eso ya es decir mucho.

A SIMPLE VISTA – Tenemos a una joven mujer de características caucásicas, es decir, piel clara y cabello rubio peinado en dos coletitas. Lo más llamativo de ella son sus marquitas alteanas color cyan y ojos violetas. Usando un atuendo que combina los colores blanco, celeste y rosa con mallas negras, una especie de reminiscencia al vestuario de nuestra Allura, se trata de una alteana “común” que, a pesar de vivir en un lugar donde se está en relativa paz, no termina de creérsela como el resto de sus vecinos. Seguro, su apariencia es la de una niña inocente y hasta indefensa, pero como buen alteano, puede darte una paliza si se lo propone.

Sumémosle a eso que se trata de una persona muy curiosa y además, de personalidad escéptica, quien no termina de creerse la “verdad histórica” con la que ha crecido, y que por desgracia, terminó por tener la razón. No es conspiranoica, simplemente no puede creerse todas las “virtudes” atribuidas al “salvador” de su gente.

ANTECEDENTES

La susodicha “güerita” junto a su hermanito (El que quedó vivo)

Anime/Serie 80´s – El personaje que sirvió como base a la princesa Romelle , es la princesa Amue, del planeta Heracles. Según la historia de GoLion, Heracles estaba en constante conflicto con Altea, y con tal de ganarles, se aliaron con el ejército Galra… obviamente, esto hizo que se les saliera el tiro por la culata y terminaran mucho peor que como estaban.

Amue vivía muy a gusto junto a sus hermanos Samson y Alor. Pero cuando se dio la alianza con los Galra, la cosa se puso fea, Samson fue convertido en una robobestia por estúpida voluntad propia para vencer al ejército Alteano, mientras que los otros dos carnalillos y medio pueblo herculano (pffjajajaa, chiste local) se daba cuenta de a poco de las verdaderas intenciones de los malos del cuento. Después de una misión de infiltrados por parte de nuestros greñudos pilotos que salió como la excusa de nuestro Lotor (o sea, MAL XD) Sincline se lleva a Amue como prisionera y procede a usarla como piñata. Bueno, decir que la trataron como piñata fue poco. Fue golpeada, abusada, humillada, colgada, incluso se insinúa que fue violada por el simpático Sincline, y esto porque la consideraba un vulgar “sustituto” de Fala, después de todo, ambas eran idénticas. Justo el día en que iba a ser ejecutada, la princesa tiene el “honor” de encontrarse con Ryo,  hermano gemelo de Takashi y así ambos logran escapar del planeta. Y así, la princesa, el resto de herculanos (jajajaja XD) liberados, Ryo y demás gente competente se vuelven una especie de “aliados” del equipo GoLion saboteando las bases Galra. A pesar de todas las estupideces de Ryo (mismas estupideces que harían rabiar a cualquier feminista misandrica extremista), Amue termina desarrollando sentimientos por el… solo para que al final el muy baboso se matara junto a Sincline al final del maldito anime. ¬¬ En cuanto a la censurada versión norteamericana, la historia de Romelle no cambia mucho, excepto en que Pollux no estaba TAN enemistado con Arus, Avok (Samson) es convertido en robobestia, pero como se niega a matar, los Drule lo ejecutan. No se insinúa nada más que puros maltratos físicos por parte de Lotor (en los fanfictions en cambio, las agresiones son mayores dependiendo del escritor), y la más importante de todas, acá Sven SI SOBREVIVE todo el borlote y SI se queda con la querida princesa. (Aprendé algo, gemelo boludo ¬¬)

Algo que me gustó por parte de los gringos es que hicieron que la relación entre Sven y Romelle fuera más trabajada (lo más trabajado que se podía en los 80). Vamos, que cuando Ryo decía “No tengo porqué aguantar a una princesita”, Sven decía “La seguiré por siempre, mi princesa”. Esta frase cursi me suena más a serle leal a una idea, pero bueno, ya sabemos cómo terminó este par. ^^

En las consiguientes pseudosecuelas – Pues en “Third Dimension” no sale, al menos no recuerdo, mientras que en “Voltron Force” TAMPOCO sale, pero nos dan a entender que si existe. Después de todo, tuvo un hijo con Sven.

Comic – Aquí si les voy a quedar mal, en las wikias no mencionan nada de ella en los comics, tanto el de Dynamite como el de DDP. Igual si existe en las continuidades, pero lo que se dice la segunda editorial, no se sabe.

Como pueden ver, la principal diferencia entre la versión original y la más reciente es la realeza. En esta versión es, como dije antes, una refugiada alteana más. Aún así, el factor en común es el amor que le profesaba a su ya extinta familia.

ACTRIZ DE DOBLAJE

Por el momento, en la wiki de doblaje no aparece quien fue su seiyuu, pero en inglés fue doblada por B.J. Ward y en español latino por Gaby Willer (Motoko Kusanagi en Ghost in the Shell, Ukyo Kuonji en Ranma ½, Trunks niño en Dragon Ball Z) . En un capitulo fue doblada por Andrea Coto (Voz recurrente de Meryl Streep).

Para esta nueva versión su voz es interpretada por Mimi Davila, Lacey Chabert en un capitulo, mientras que en español latino la encargada fue Xóchitl Ugarte (la querida Misty, de Pokemon).

EL ESTEREOTIPO QUE REPRESENTA

Pues... lo mas estereotípico que se me ocurre es el sujeto conspiranóico al que nadie hace caso y al final resulta tener razón. Pero como dije párrafos antes, me gustó que su diseño estuviese muy relaconado con el de la princesa. Pese a que la apariencia de las dos ya no coincide como en sus versiones anteriores, ambas conservan el blanco, rosa y celeste como colores representativos.

OPINIÓN PERSONAL

… Pues a diferencia de muchos, a mí me cayó bien. Digo, no fue lo que esperaba, pero me tiene satisfecha.

A saber: Todos esperábamos a una Romelle morena, sospechosamente parecida a Allura, líder de la rebelión o por lo menos miembro de ella y de repe, ¡Pum! Resulta ser una alteanita bonita, rubia, blanca y menemista. En cuanto a mí, yo esperaba que fuera una de las rebeldes, con ascendencia de otra raza alienígena o ¿Por qué no? Galra, la cual le echaría en cara a nuestra linda Allura donde estaba en los años en que el pueblo alteano era masacrado y con qué derecho se consideraba la princesa, y blablablá… Pero bueno, resultó ser una niña de la colonia secreta cuyos habitantes eran convertidos en soylent verde. Seguro, pudieron ponerla desde temporadas atrás para que su relevancia no fuera TAN secundaria, pero oigan, al menos tiene más participación que las otras dos series anteriores. Me gustó que fuera de esas personas que no se creen todo lo que dicen, en el mundo real sería la que no se cree la historia oficial que te enseña la SEP, el que no le cree al candidato, o si me voy a algo más denso… al que cuestiona toda su religión y termina volviéndose ateo, siguiendo su ideal aunque su familia termine desconociéndole. Y viéndolo de esta manera, pues así le pasó con su pueblo. Pobrecita, fusionaron a Antok y a Bandor en un solo hermanito y lo terminan matando, pero bueno, gracias a ese evento, vimos porqué Romelle tiene tanto rencor hacia Lotor. Y ahí está el pequeño detalle… Lotor quiso hacer lo correcto de la manera más equivocada posible, y nomás por ser carita, medio fandom se le va directo al cuello a Romelle por chismosa. ¿Pero por qué odiarla? Ella es un amor, todo le da curiosidad, quiere conocer el universo, es como una versión femenina y flaquita de nuestro bello Hunk. De veras, ustedes no tienen corazón (eso, o no conocen a “doña kurosaki-kun” o “ninja inutil de pelo rosa”, esas si son mujeres desesperantes).¬¬ No resultó ser de la realeza, pero me atrevo a decir que esta chica es la versión “común normal del pueblo” de lo que vivió Allura al perder su planeta. Me dolió un poquito que casi no hubiera interacción con Shiro, pero bueno, es otra versión, se le perdona. Algo que si voy a extrañar del fandom son las teorías locas, una de mis favoritas era que sospecharan que Romelle era Haggar disfrazada (como ocurrió en un capítulo de la serie ochentera), no sé, esa si era buena teoría, o que fuera un títere estilo Kuron y al último se revelara contra la bruja, eso hubiera estado también bueno (ideas para fanfiction, saquen algo decente) Como dije antes, no me desagrada, me gusta el amor que la otra mitad del fandom le dedica, que al igual que yo, esperaban otra cosa y… ¿Soy la única que medio la shipea con Krolia? Aaah, lo siento, lapsus yuris. Lo que sea, MINIMO, ahora si se acordaron de ella, por lo menos no solo cumple el rol de la pareja del Shiro.
