Clothes and Orientation

1. Back in the day when I still looked like this, people thought I was gay.

2. Well, they weren't "wrong", but there was an extra layer to it. I was a gay trans woman.

3. Dressing femme was kind of my only option at the time to try and express my gender identity more closely. But this didn't feel right and only reinforced people thinking that I was a gay man.

4. To be able to truly express my gender identity accurately, I had to change my body. So I started HRT in 2002.

5. By 2005 I had smooth skin, soft features, a reduced amount of body hair, no beard. Boobs! Hormones are magical!*

6. Now I can wear the clothes I actually feel comfortable in, and be seen as a queer woman.

7. Back then, many people just couldn't wrap their brains around their idea some trans folk might not identify as straight after transition.

8. I knew I was a trans lesbian. But when I told people that, they scoffed and told me "You will never be with a woman as a trans woman, because no woman will want you."

9. Well then I guess it's a good thing I'm also an aromantic asexual. But I didn't know that at the time.

(*) Hormones didn't actually get rid of the beard. That required a lot of laser zapping.

Judith Godrèche, née le 23 mars 1972 à Paris 17ᵉ, est une actrice, scénariste, réalisatrice et écrivaine française. Elle est révélée par le drame La Désenchantée de Benoît Jacquot, qui lui vaut une nomination au César du meilleur espoir féminin, puis par la comédie d'époque Ridicule réalisée par Patrice Leconte.
