Picky newbies are the bane of my existence. I had a guy in my shop this past weekend looking for an elk hunting rifle, but didn’t want it in 30-06 or 300winmag because they kick too much and are “fudd calibers.” When I asked what caliber he did want, his response was 7mm PRC. We don’t carry anything in that caliber so I showed him a rifle in .338 win mag and because the shop printed tag said “Great Elk Gun” he started considering it because “it’ll be a one shot kill” 🤦‍♂️🙄🙄

Pretty much every major gun/caliber review on Youtube is a paid advertisement. The gun company actually provides the gun so the reviewer doesn't have to pay for it out of pocket, I think they might provide the ammo too, and they typically pay a few thousand dollars for any of the big channels to do a video on their product. The contract will stipulate that the reviewer is not allowed to negatively criticize the product. There might be some leeway with "They do X, I would personally prefer Y, but X is still really good" but if you don't follow the rules they pull the sponsorship.

Gun reviews might be entertaining to watch, they might even have some useful information, but at the end of the day it's about trying to convince you to buy it.

Also I hate these newish rounds like 7mm PRC, .300 PRC, and 8.6 Blackout all costing $2 a round or more. Cheap .30-06 is over a buck a round on shelves here and .308 isn't that far behind. That's pretty painful. How the fuck is someone supposed to want to pay DOUBLE that for a fancy new round?

Seriously how am I supposed to spend over $1500 on a precision rifle, probably like another $750+ on a decent scope, and two bucks a round? Burn through more than half a box just zeroing the scope. Or on the other hand I can spend about $400 on a Savage Axis or a Mossberg Patriot in .30-06, another $400 on a reasonable scope, cry a little less about how much I'm paying for .30-06, and still have a setup that I can have fun plinking with out to about 400 yards which is further than I could hunt an elk around here anyway.
