On treating the Qur'an as a quarry and taking verses out of their context.

"There is hardly any public event about Islam where the German dialogue partners, and if not them, then two or three audience members, do not jump up and confront the Muslim speakers with aggressive verses from the Quran. Especially on the internet, dozens of alarming statements are circulating. Many of these are simply fabricated or tendentiously translated. However, the correct quotations are sufficient to conjure up the Islamic threat, such as the reference to Surah 4:81: "Fight in God's cause! And encourage the believers."

Another verse that is rarely missing in dialogue with "the Muslims" is Surah 2:191: "And kill them (the infidels) wherever you find them." Even more frequently quoted, indeed probably the most well-known verse of the Quran in the West, is Surah 8:12, usually translated as a simple "Kill them": "Strike off their (the infidels, unbelievers) heads and strike off every fingertip of them."

Such quotations are preferably answered by Muslims with other quotations. To hold their ground in interreligious dialogue, they refer to God's mercy, which the Quran highlights at the beginning of each surah, or to the word "Islam," which derives from the root salama, meaning peace. Among the verses that Muslims use to demonstrate their own peacefulness, the most popular is certainly Surah 2:256: "There is no compulsion in religion." Surah 5:32 also seems to underline the humanism of Islam: "If anyone kills a person, it is as if he kills all mankind."

One can continue such a ping-pong of verses indefinitely. But in doing so, one learns nothing about the Quran itself. Individual verses, torn from their textual and historical context and separated from their reception history, say nothing about the peacefulness or violence of the Quran. Treating the Quran as a quarry from which one takes whatever suits them contradicts its linguistic and compositional structure. At the same time, it goes against the most important interpretative traditions of Islam."
