Lex's focus was razor-sharp, as it had to be. Over the past months, he'd learned to hone it, to not allow himself to falter through night-long sessions working on the same piece over and over. He played until his fingers were sore, sang until his voice could barely be heard, did whatever his master commanded, because the alternative was always worse.

Tonight, he had been singing a piece by a composer he'd never heard of before the start of his service. Perhaps it was written by a vampire like his master -- he didn't dare ask. It was difficult, stretching his range, with a tricky rhythm and several key changes. Nonetheless, Lex persisted. Four mistakes. Three now. Five. Two. Seven. Three. One. One. One.

Lex was certain that he'd never be allowed to hear the word 'zero' come from his master's lips. There would always be some fault, even if it was something inaudible to human ears. One mistake was the best he would ever do in this place, allowing his master the pleasure of disciplining him while keeping his punishments light.

He couldn't stop to wonder how long he would be expected to endure this. If he were lucky, his master would someday find a new plaything and discard Lex, his duties diminished to mere housekeeping like most of the other thralls in the manor. If he were unlucky, he'd die like this. Either way, he'd eventually be free, even if only in death. In death he could indulge his unwanted desires to see his family and feel sunshine, if he wasn't cursed enough to be thrown into hell.

Until then, he had to pursue perfection at any cost.

And so he sang the piece again, discarding feeling for precision. When his master was in a good mood, he would explain some of Lex's mistakes and offer instruction along with his correction; when he wasn't, which was more often the case, the beatings would be his only teacher. He would have to work out his faults for himself based on what got him a higher or lower number of mistakes.

Tonight seemed to be one of those rare good nights. His master saw fit to correct his posture and occasionally inform him of which notes required improvement. The blows from his crop were light as well. Lex cherished these evenings, his only break from misery.

He sang the song through, applying every one of his master's instructions, making sure they were all implanted in his mind deeper than his own name. When he had finished, he waited for his number, hoping it was low, perhaps even a one.

Instead, his master stared at him, brows furrowing, considering something deeply.

Lex tried not to let the fear show on his face. This kind of silence was something new, and in this place, the new always meant disaster. He had somehow managed to make a mistake so terrible that his master was contemplating a new punishment for him. Maybe his hubris in assuming he'd done well was the mistake.

Maybe he'd be sent to the basement again.

The Maestro stood without a word, his eyes boring into Lex's very soul as he trembled. A part of Lex wanted to drop to his knees and beg and plead as he had at the beginning, before he'd learned that it only fueled his master's displeasure. All he could do was wait.

Finally, his master spoke. "We will go out tonight."

Out. What did he mean? What punishment was this? Surely he couldn't… "Outside, master?" he asked, risking a question.

"Yes, child, outside. I have something to show you and something to tell you. Follow."

Thankfully, his master's power pulled him along in perfect step, because now Lex was trembling hard enough that he might be unable to walk on his own. Before he'd learned his lesson, the outside world was all he dreamed about, imagining himself allowed to see the moon and stars and feel the fresh air on his face once again. But he knew very well that his master was not taking him outside as a reward. There were never rewards in this place. This would be some new torment, one that needed to take place outside, one that he'd have to get used to, learning all over again how to hold in his cries and keep his face neutral.

Maybe his master was finally going to release him from service, in the only way that he ever would.

In the entrance of the manor, the Maestro opened a musty closet to produce a wool coat and hand it to Lex. Lex was so surprised at being given anything, much less something beneficial, that he stood with the coat in his hands, shocked.

"The coat is for wearing. Or have you forgotten that in less than a year?" the Maestro said. "I told you that my intent is to show you something. It is not to have you freeze to death."

"Yes, master. Thank you for your consideration, master." Lex put on the scratchy wool coat, which smelled of dust and cedar. A scarf, hat, and gloves were pressed into his hands next, all of them black, and Lex put those on as well. It was the first he'd been dressed in anything other than his customary uniforms since that fateful night he'd arrived in this place.

The rush of cold air as his master opened the front door was a shock. It wasn't because of the cold -- the manor was almost as cold as the outside -- but because of the movement, the freshness. He'd gotten so used to the air being musty and stale that he almost couldn't take the sensation of the wind, a pleasure he didn't deserve and had long since given up on.

Regardless of what kind of punishment that was to follow, at least he'd been able to experience the night air once more.

There was a few inches of snow on the ground, crunching under their feet as they walked. It was a clear night, the half-moon pale and shining overhead. Lex would have liked to wrap the scarf more securely against the cold, but his movements were being controlled as usual. Thankfully, he was free enough to look around.

There were very few people or carriages out on this chill night. Lex guessed it was probably well past midnight. The taverns they passed were firmly shuttered, and there weren't even candles visible in the windows of buildings. It was if the entire city had been frozen by his master.

The fresh air and peace were enough to lull Lex into a sense of calm until he realized that he recognized the streets all too well. Panic gripped his chest with an intensity that he didn't know still existed within him -- because they were only a few blocks from his family's home.

No, it couldn't be. Anything but that. A spark of defiance rose where he thought he had nothing left. He'd been good, obedient, even in the face of his master's absolutely unreasonable demands. He'd given his master no reason at all to threaten his family.

It was a small relief when they turned down a different street, away from the home he'd grown up in. At least his master didn't have violent designs on them.

Even with his terror, a small part of him longed to see the house again, to have the small chance of catching a glimpse of a familiar face through a lighted window. If only he had his free will back, just for an hour…

No, those were treacherous thoughts that did him no good. They only stole his focus away from his studies and his service. It was better if he never saw his family again. He was grateful for even being allowed to leave the house at all.

The street that the Maestro had turned down was familiar, too, one he had often traveled. It wasn't long before they passed the church his family had attended, the one where he sang in the choir for years, back when music was something to love and not something to perfect. He thought it coincidence until his master came to an abrupt halt right in front of it.

"Our destination."

Lex couldn't help the confusion that crossed his face, quickly squelching it in favor of a neutral expression. Wasn't a vampire forbidden from entering a church? But surely his master knew that, so his thoughtless question would only earn him a reprimand at best. "Yes, sir," he said instead.

The Maestro strode onto the church grounds with no apparent ill effect, Lex strung along behind him as usual. They passed the building proper and began to walk up the snowy hill into the small graveyard behind. It was the graveyard where his father's grandparents were buried, where they would often leave flowers. And to Lex's horror, his master was headed straight for that family grave.

His parents must be dead. His master must have killed his parents. That's what he intended to show Lex. There was no other explanation.

His master stopped in front of a simple tombstone with a winged cherub carved on the top. Lex looked with horror to see exactly what he expected -- his father's name. Alexander Strand, born 1795, died 1815.

It was his father's name, but not his father's year of birth. Lex, trying to fight back tears, realized what he was actually looking at.

"Is this�� my grave, sir?"

"Yes."

The momentary relief that his parents weren't dead gave way to fresh horror. His parents must think that he's dead. Of course they did, why wouldn't they -- when he disappeared without a trace and hadn't been seen in a year.

There were flowers on the grave, flowers still fresh even in the snow, that must have been laid there very recently if not that very day.

Lex felt emotions swelling up that he had thought he'd burned out of himself. His family and friends had held a funeral with no remains, losing all hope that he'd ever return, perhaps around the same time Lex had lost that hope himself. Someone still mourned him enough to bring flowers. Did his mother cry at his grave? Did they still think of him kindly?

If they knew what he had become, would they wish that he had truly died instead?

His master must be showing him this to extinguish all hope that he'd ever be rescued. But Lex had lost that hope long ago, and his master surely knew that. So the Maestro must only have brought Lex here to be cruel, to take pleasure in Lex's pain.

"I will allow you to speak your mind, child."

Lex knew better than to think he could ever speak freely without threat of reprisal, but his master clearly expected him to say something. "I see that my family thinks I'm dead, sir," he said, the most neutral observation he could muster, the waver in his voice giving him away. He'd resigned himself that it was better this way, back when he'd been locked in the basement, but he still couldn't keep his composure.

"You have been bound to the service of a dead thing," said the Maestro. "You are dead in every way that matters, are you not?"

It hurt to admit, and he loathed his master for forcing him to say it. Perhaps it was that one small spark in him that didn't want to die yet, the tiniest kernel of defiance that he kept hidden away, that still howled at having his life and youth stolen from him.

"Yes, sir," he managed finally, throat dry. "I am."

"Do you know why I am showing you this?"

"To keep me in my rightful place, sir," he said, hoping a deferent enough answer would spare him more pain. "To ensure that I don't falsely believe that I may be rescued."

"I do not need to drag you halfway across the city in the frigid cold simply to keep you in your rightful place. I have dozens of effective techniques that can be administered with only the tools I keep on my person and in my home, as you're well aware."

The correction didn't come with a blow or humiliation. His master was being unusually patient tonight. Lex's fear of reprisal was at war with his desire to have a conversation, any sort of conversation, after so much solitude. "Then the reason is not punishment, then, sir."

"That's correct, it is not." The Maestro looked up into the night sky as if searching for something. "I have brought you here because it seemed like a fitting place to inform you of my decision."

"Your decision, sir?" And just like that, the false calm was broken, because Lex could only imagine one sort of decision that involved him. "Are you going to kill me, sir?"

"Yes."

So there it was. His master's patience had finally run out. Lex would be free. Free of the need to try to live up to an impossible notion of perfection. Free of hunger pains and the sting of whips and the ache of loneliness. Free to stop quieting any desire that did not please his master, to imagine that he might someday reach a better world.

It should be a relief, but now that he was staring death in the face, Lex found he was still so frightened. What could he possibly be frightened of? He'd already resigned himself to the idea of spending the rest of his life in his master's service. Death would be a mercy. He should welcome it.

And yet, perhaps because it was the first time in so long that he had seen the stars and felt the wind on his face, he couldn't quite bring himself to want to die.

"I'm not going to kill you here and now, child."

"You're not, sir?" Lex's voice betrayed how close he was to sobbing.

"I have made the decision to give you the ultimate gift and the ultimate punishment," he said. "When the time is right, I will kill you, and I will make you into a wretched creature like me."

The dread Lex felt when he thought he was about to die was nothing compared to the dread he felt as those words sunk in. His master was going to turn him.

He'd be a monster like his master, feeding off of the blood of innocents, sowing nothing but misery and pain wherever he went. And it would never end. He would be immortal, denied even the mercy of death. He could be chained to his master for decades, for centuries, trapped until he withered away into an empty husk that no longer even remembered what it was to be human.

And if he did die, if some kind soul drove a stake through his heart, there would be no better place for him. He wasn't sure if he believed in hell, but he certainly didn't believe that creatures like his master went to any sort of better place.

An awful smile grew across his master's face. "You seem unappreciative of this gift."

Lex tried to choke out some appropriate answer, but his mouth was dry. He was going to be beaten for being unappreciative, broken and tortured on his own grave, the resting place he would never get to use because he would never be allowed to rest.

"No, sir," said Lex, knowing what he was bringing down on himself. "I don't want it."

Ice cold eyes bore into his very soul, and Lex tried not to flinch away. "You are right not to want it. For once, your lack of appreciation is warranted."

And like nothing had happened, the Maestro began to stride out of the graveyard, pulling Lex along like a toy on a string. Lex tried to steady his nerves to keep his knees from caving as he was forced to walk.

A vampire, he was going to be a vampire like his cruel master.

No. No, he wouldn't.

Perhaps he didn't get a say in what sort of monster he became. Perhaps vampires were only demons wearing the flesh of the innocent. Perhaps even his master had been a kind man once.

But if he retained any influence over himself, any at all, he vowed to not be like his master.

Even if he were forced to drink blood and take a thrall, he would never, ever treat them like his master treated him. He would be gentle and kind and put them at ease as much as he could. He wouldn't live in a bleak cage of self-made misery. If he couldn't defy his master in any other way, if he couldn't dodge his horrible fate, then he could at least vow not to perpetuate the cruelty any further, if only to spite the vile wretch who'd cursed him.

PAC: What Hobby Should You Begin Next? 🎨🛶📯

Sup y'all, it's time for a new pick a card reading (this one's especially for you night owls out there as I'm posting this at midnight lol). Ideally, I'd like to post one PAC every week after this but eh, lettuce see about that. 🥬👀

This pick a card was inspired by the remaining energies of late Taurus season. The grass is bright, the air is warm, the flowers are blooming, and it's brought out the artist in me. While I've been finishing a leisure painting, I stopped to draw out some cards to help out anyone who's in the mood to do something fun in their spare time but could use some direction or guidance.

Pick any one of the four Prism Oracle cards below, or its corresponding crystal/emoji, to see what hobby you could explore next, or if there is a hobby you enjoy that is calling for your attention:

Pile 1 - Consciousness + Moonstone 🌙

Wow, pile 1, I think you have the most obvious answer of all four piles. You're very drawn to pursuing something musical. It could be in a variety of ways. You might try singing, writing a song, playing an instrument, learning to dance, or perform in musical theater (the purple curtain in the Justice card definitely brings theater to mind). You could enjoy collecting vinyl records, or producing music through special programs and apps. You may desire to publish your music online, or dream of going big on stage and signing major contracts with labels. Two Pages tells me you're most likely into more than one thing, as plenty of musical artists can multitask.

Your pile was the only one to get two Prism cards at first as Anxiety initially wanted to pop out. It's also clear that with two Pages and the Beginnings card, you're very new at this hobby. There's an over awareness of this fact, that on some level you may not know where to even start. There's some doubt I sense that you feel you can't be at the level you wish to stand on. Capricorn energy wants to reach for the very top of the ladder in accomplishment; it is a steady energy although not intent on settling. I get that there are many people here who greatly look up to an artist and wish to have their same talents. Try to look past the smoke and mirrors of all the top 40's singers and know that music is way more accessible than it's made to look.

Try embracing the newness of this pursuit, pile 1. It's okay to be a little lost, or feel that there's a long way to go. The only way to go pro is to start small and grow. There are a lot of free resources online for learning music (try out musictheory.net for free lessons) and free vocal technique lessons on Youtube. Some people are very lucky to have the chance to start learning at a young age, but if we were to set a rule stating that only those who did so could play, that would leave a lot of creative geniuses and successful musicians out of the frame. If you're learning to play the keyboard, practice one song or even one note at a time (doesn't have to be Chopsticks, lol). Consistency is key.

When the inspiration and joy to explore music finally strikes you, take the time to really dive in and make something small. If you're trying to write a song, start with a jingle. If it's music theory you want to go over, start with just 1 lesson and see how it feels. If you're learning to dance, begin with warm ups and slow music before working on the more intense songs. Are you looking for writing inspiration? Keep plenty of notes on hand and learn how to identify music so you can easily write a melody down (there are empty music notebooks for this). If this is something you would like to do in the long term, then continue to practice with that perspective by not overdoing it to compensate for "lost time". You are exactly where you need to be on your creative journey.

Pile 2 - Happiness + Carnelian 😊

What's going on, pile 2? With the Selves card above Sagittarius, I'm getting that a lot of you may be interested in pursuing theater or comedy, whether that's stand up or it's simply channeled through the projects you create. Your next hobby may involve incorporating a lot of humor into what you do. This pile is the most multifaceted of the four, with many differing hobbies, so I'm going to list a variety of different talents, but what binds them all together is the need to express one's own (very) strong opinions for the world to see.

You may want to be a photographer who documents unusual things, or write something that makes a powerful statement. There's a need here to let go of any of the anxieties that come with expressing your authentic self, because while those feelings are natural, listening to them too much will dampen your creative drive. This is the group that wants to make very surreal graffiti art or provocative dance routines. With the Tower card, here, I feel there's a need for the shock and awe to get your inspiration buzzing. On the gentler side, I can see some of you getting into something nature based like flower printing and permaculture but the caveat is that it's a reflection of your genuine self and beliefs in some way. With Wheel of Fortune, some of you may feel an urge to learn about tarot or pendulum reading, as these things are typically categorized as "unusual".

You may also get into traveling to stay involved in your hobby, or it requires roving about in some way. To break down creative blocks, it might help to actually move yourself to a different location. It doesn't necessarily involve moving to a whole new place, it could just refer to another part of your home or you may benefit from walking or dancing to decompress. I feel that moving your body will stimulate your creative ideas to flow through. A small number of you may have considered trying out extreme sports like free climbing or parkour. I don't really need to mention that these can be incredibly dangerous, so some of you may like something similar like skateboarding or gymnastics as well. It doesn't have to be intense, just active.

With the Lovers, there also exists a social aspect to your hobby. You may be drawn to share you hobby with a friend or with partners. It will greatly help you to be in an environment that supports your avant-garde tastes and not settle for less. It's not always easy to put shocking art with profound messages out there for the world to make sense of it, though some make it seem that way. It's easy to pretend that negative feedback doesn't get to you, but only accept constructive criticism as that will feed you more than shocked reactions. You cannot afford to have others in your life discourage you, as your skill sets require a lot of space for growth. Nourish relationships that want to celebrate your talents with you. Find a community that loves what you love, and wants to see you happy with what you do. Embrace the wild side of your artistic abilities.

Pile 3 - Creativity + Amethyst 🎉

Hello, pile 3. With the 2 of Pentacles, many of you may want to explore a hobby that is both online and offline, or the internet and social media are major components. If you like making artwork, you could be into digital art or simply want to upload images of your offline work for others to see. With Virgo, some of you may have a lot to say, by starting a blog or online journal documenting your life or interests, or you could try out freelance editing. If you were a youtuber, you could be really good at creating epically long videos about niche topics, or short videos explaining how to do a certain task (like tiktoks that showcase a person's routines and what cleaning products they recommend).

I see that this is the pile of innovation, as the Creativity card shows a lightbulb. You could have various ideas pop up in your head, only to feel unsure of how to approach them. Your attention span could split into a variety of different mediums for getting the idea out. Aquarius wants to take its genius energy and spread it around the world. For a lot of you, social media will support your ideas by broadcasting them. Your hobby may directly involve interfacing with others; your creative spark is not for hiding away. Web design, for example, is a hobby but it involves creating something that others will directly interact with. Your work is meant for a wide audience, should you choose to put yourself out there.

This may not always be easy for you, since there could be a pull towards more stable and predictable activities. There's a nervousness here, kind of like imposter syndrome. You may get a really cool idea for a mobile game app before you or someone else goes "but that's an unrealistic goal to spend so much time and effort on", followed by, "how could I ever make something like that?" The thing is, you can be the most talented, skilled, and experienced person when it comes to a subject, yet still have these same worries. Imposter syndrome doesn't magically go away with a college degree, a new job, or 10,000 subscribers. It's completely normal, but make sure to not let your doubts tempt you into doing something more boring and unfulfilling. This is the pile most likely to try a totally new hobby that is unrelated to your other skills, it doesn't have to be realistic.

But also understand that it can take time for something to get really good. Your first fiction draft is gonna turn out clunky, or your app could be filled with bugs, but it's part of the process. There's no perfect time; when you get the urge to try, just try it! Reach out to a local community or chat group so you can get a realistic sense of how long it takes for projects and skills develop. Slam poetry may be a great outlet, so if you'd like to do that, attend an open mic and see how others do it. You are allowed to be imperfect with your hobby--if you wish to evolve your craft, remember the passion and curiosity that brought you to it.

Pile 4 - Determination + Citrine 🧭

How's it going, pile 4? So this is the most active and possibly athletic pile we have here. Staying in the house is not gonna work because something is itching you to get out underneath the stars. Could some of you be majoring or planning in major in STEM? I'm getting a lot of natural science here. With the Astronomer card, you could want to use your telescope to go stargazing or visit planetariums. Are you still feeling the buzz from all the aurora storm and eclipse hype? It would not surprise me if these events awoke an interest for you and now you're looking up when the next meteor shower will show up or when Saturn will be most visible in the sky.

Your next hobby needs or is the outdoors on some level. But Cancer energy is that of a homebody. The most laidback people in this group may enjoy relaxing hobbies like birdwatching or gardening. These hobbies could be spiritually fulfilling for you. I'm seeing someone wearing an apron outside, so could some of you be interested in grilling or being the host to a fun party in the backyard. Do people even have book club meetings in gardens? A lot of enjoying nature is simply finding a good spot and soaking in the scenery with no other goal in mind. Just being near trees and beach sides might be enough.

But I see a lot of you mainly wish to have an adventure and go far out in nature when the weather's just right. You could be thinking about hiking or backpacking out on trails. It all depends on your comfort level as we all have different tolerance levels. I don't know if geocaching and pokemon go are still popular, but they can be unique ways to engage with the outdoors. You could try guided nature tours presented by nature conservationists like the National Audubon, where you can identify and take photos of animals as you wander through the woods and plains. You may like a hobby that is seasonally specific, like swimming in warm waters or skiing down a snowy mountain.

Your hobby may have you think deeply about how humans connect with nature, exploring the ecosystem and how our actions influence our environment. Climate change can be a very serious and, for some, directly impactful topic to mull over. Remind yourself that as long as you're respectful (leave no trace), mother nature enjoys your company as much as you do for her. A small few of you may have the urge to travel to weird locations. Two knights in your reading suggest boldness. If you decide to visit an abandoned or haunted place, Queen of Swords says to please be careful and follow rules if it says no trespassing, and remember that abandoned places can be dangerous from faulty wiring and unstable flooring. Overall, I feel this pile just can't do with an indoor hobby. You have the motivation and courage to explore the vast beautiful world out there. It awaits you.

Analyzing the lullaby motif in book 7 (+translation of lyrics)

MAJOR SPOILERS for book 7 chapter 1-5

I hope everyone remembers the lullaby Malleus sang for everyone when he overblotted because that motif came back FOUR times in chapter 5 and I am going to analyze them all because they make me way too emotional 😭

Please feel free to find the lullaby motifs in this post and this post if necessary (although one of them is not included).

Translated lyrics of the lullaby:

My eyes are watching over you still, let's be together

With no fear, even if we wake from this dream

Sleep, sleep, my beloved child

In dreams, I pray you would be guided to walk toward the light

(Analysis begins under the cut:)

The melody of the lullaby has been used 5 times at least in the story, they include:

When Malleus hummed it to everyone he put to sleep during his OB

When Meleanor sang it to Malleus

When Lilia sang it to Silver

When Malleus sang it to Silver

In the bgm when Sebek was helping come out of the darkness

The themes of this piece of music are love and farewell.

Motif use 2 is chronologically when the lullaby was first sung, it’s a song of love from a mother to her child when she knows they must part. I believe that when Meleanor sang this lullaby, she had already made up her mind to fight and let her guards escape with her child. She was taking the last moments she had with her child to name him "Malleus" and sing him this lullaby (7-75). Lyrics include sth like “I will be watching over you even if we wake up from this dream” and “may you be guided and walk towards the light”. But the beauty that comes with the theme of farewell is the theme of legacy. Because even though Meleanor is now gone, her song, and thus her love, never died.

Because Lilia remembers it. Motif 3 is Lilia singing it to Silver, and he’s also sung it to Malleus before. In a musical story, even if the characters lie or don’t have perfect information, the music never lies. Even if Lilia once doubted whether he could love Malleus and hatch him properly (7-77), and even if Lilia may still doubt whether he could love Silver, a human, properly (7-81), the motif symbolises love which tells us the truth — Lilia is capable of giving love. And the legacy is not just that Lilia passed the song to Malleus, it’s that Lilia internalized the song and sang it to his own son. He has seen what kind of mother Meleanor was, and he’s learnt from her kindness, her pride, her love and he has put that into how he raise his own child. Lilia has Meleanor’s legacy too.

And then to address the two Malleus motifs. First of all Malleus never sings it with lyrics, which would imply Malleus himself doesn’t fully know the true meaning of the song. However, he knows that he’s felt happiness and protection from hearing this song, so he sings it to Silver when Lilia asks him to as motif 4 (7-81). When he sang it to Silver he sounded confused, it must’ve been a long time since he’s heard the song. But he still remembers it, which means Meleanor’s love never died because Malleus remembers it all the same. It’s still in Malleus. It’s still there.

But when Malleus overblots, the song gets twisted a little bit (motif 1). However, in Malleus’s mind, it’s still a song of happiness and protection, because he overblotted trying to protect everyone’s happiness forever. But the music sounds creepy to show you the true nature of the song is not like this. The nature of the song is that "even though I cannot be with you always, I will still love you and wish for your happiness". This is the part that Malleus did not understand and did not cope with. It’s also interesting to note that Malleus sang motif 1 with a smile and no hesitation, he was completely confident and sure in what he was doing. Meanwhile, in all other three sung versions, each singer had their own different emotions in their singing, and those emotions were a lot softer, a lot less certain.

And the fifth and final use of the motif is used in the bgm when Sebek yells at Silver for him to get a grip (7-86). The song is arranged into a victorious piece with certainty and assurance. The use of the motif reminds us of the themes: love and legacy. It calls attention to these themes and entrenchs the truth that Silver IS Lilia’s legacy, and that’s only possible because of the love that Lilia has given him. The exact part where the bgm starts playing was when Silver said "Even in the darkness, I could always hear it. 'Stand up' 'Don't give in' 'Live'... it's father's voice. [...] All that he taught me, that's the proof that he had loved me. It's not a dream and not an illusion... it's true love." (I'm serious he really said "true love" for real this IS a translation T^T). When Silver saw Lilia's memories of the song, he denied the love, he said he should not deserve it. The motif had to come back because this is the moment when Silver can finally realize “Ah. This song is full of love and father sang it for me.” The motif HAD to come back because Silver has to come to accept it.

But the bgm arrangement is also made for Sebek. The bgm is full of certainty because Sebek has no doubts in what he’s telling Silver. Sebek, who has grown up alongside Silver, has witness all the love between Lilia and Silver. He KNOWS Lilia’s love is true and he’s conveying that to Silver with certainty. This bgm summarises what Sebek was doing so well, Sebek sees the love Lilia has for Silver and was literally blasting it in Silver’s ears.

As Disney's Sleeping Beauty (1959) puts it, "true love conquers all". And we've been shown that there's love in every direction among our Diasomnia found family. Let's hope that, soon enough, Silver and Sebek would wake Lilia up, and they can finally show Malleus the true meaning of his mother's lullaby and the wish she entrusted to it — that he would walk towards the light, even if she cannot be the one guiding him...

I hope y'all are okay with me taking some liberties with this one because... well, you'll see:

Wilhelm didn’t mean to fall in love with Simon Eriksson. From the moment he met him, in all his stupid boyish glory, Wille knew that Simon was too good for him.

Simon was free, and beautiful, and exactly who he wanted to be. He had his life dreamed out, but not planned, and he had a checklist of all the wild adventures he chased with reckless abandon. He was everything Wilhelm wanted, and nothing he deserved.

He didn’t mean to, but he fell in love with Simon anyway. He fell in love with his laugh, and the warmth of his soft touches, and the way his nose scrunched when telling a story that made Wilhelm’s heart skip a beat. He fell in love hard, and for reasons he couldn’t quite understand, Simon decided to love him back.

Still, Wilhelm always waited for the other shoe to drop. He was always, always waiting for Simon to wake up and realize that he deserved more, someone better. But day after day, Simon woke up and chose him, because, as he often said, Wilhelm was everything he wanted too.

Wilhelm didn’t mean to propose, either. It had been a spring night, a few years after he’d officially stepped down, and it was the first time in a long while that they felt truly at peace. They had gone out to dinner and held hands in the park and no one had walked up to them even once.

Simon just looked so happy — carefree and illuminated by the red streetlight stopping traffic for them to cross the road. Wilhelm hadn’t meant to propose in that moment, but the words escaped before he could stop them, and he’d been carrying around a ring box in his pocket for the last two weeks.

There was a silent thrill that shocked through his system when Simon actually said yes. He’d slipped the ring on his own finger with that warm grin that Wilhelm had fallen in love with almost a decade earlier, and even though he hadn’t meant to, Wilhelm couldn’t imagine anything more perfect.

When he first had Simon back in those naïve days of old, he’d prepared to only have him for a few days. He expected the flame would fizzle out, that Simon would wake up one day and realize he didn’t want this anymore.

But that day never came.

And on their wedding day, when they committed to falling in love for the rest of their lives, Wilhelm didn’t really mind that nothing about Simon Eriksson had ever been planned.
