Haymitch: Did that girl ever hit any target with her arrow? Because mine did.

Cato fires arrow and misses

Brutus: Oh my god, I can’t watch this, im getting second hand embarrassment.

Haymitch: Can none of your kids climb a tree???

Cashmere: I guess not.

Marvel throws spear and misses

Finnick: None of them can aim either, this is just sad

Peeta: lets wait her out, she has to come down at some point.

Some time later

Katniss starting to cut down tracker jackers

Gloss: Did all our kids seriously fall asleep,

Cashmere rubbing her temples: Yea, they did

Johanna: Who sleeps that heavily in the arena??? Shes making so much noise how are they not awake?

Enobaria: She’s gonna die from those jackers before that nest falls,

Nest falls and careers scatter

Katniss plots with rue to blow up food

Takes her alcohol

Finnick: Every time you get drunk, you end up in a fist fight, or breaking something, or both, Haymitch just passes out.

Johanna: OH WHAT YOU WANNA FIGHT LETS FIGHT!

Finnick picks Jo up and carries her to the elevator as she continues screaming and fighting

Haymitch to Brutus and Enobaria: Haha, your tributes arent as cool as mineeee,

Brutus: at least our girl doesn’t look like she wants to vomit getting close to her supposed lover.

Finnick returns

Enobaria: that was fast?

Finnick: I locked her in her bathroom,

Haymitch: Didn’t she just break down the door last time?

Finnick: I handcuffed one of her hands to the pipes and the other to the door.

Elevator doors open revealing Johanna, drenched in water, still handcuffed to a pipe, and the door.

Finnick: I give up. *sits down*

lowering his voice as a man carrying a tray of horderves passes, 𝚋𝚛𝚊𝚗 𝚘𝚏𝚏𝚎𝚛𝚜 𝚑𝚎𝚛 𝚑𝚒𝚜 𝚊𝚛𝚖 in extended familiarity thereafter, as he gazes easily over the top of her head towards the crowd of the capitol's elite that await them with expectant eyes.

I can't help but think how Katniss's narration of Finnick and Annie always holding-hands had a certain longing to it, almost a painful one, even some jealousy to it, IMO. Because wherever they are, whatever they are doing, Finnick never lets go of his girl's hand. And it reminds me of all those times Peeta held Katniss's hand:

When they were walking down the train tracks coming back home from first games, when they walked through the gloomy streets of 12, when they entered the opening ceremony for the 74th/75th HG's, when they were waiting for their turn for their private sessions, etc., etc.

And just how good and warm it made her feel in all those times, how it just grounded her when everything else felt like it was about to crush her.

Katniss's constant observation of Annie and Finnick holding hands—even the simple fact she is narrating something so close and special to an element of her and Peeta's relationship—rings to me how Katniss is longing to have what Finnick got back. Because she knows if her Peeta was there, he would be holding her hand. Never letting go of it.

So, it doesn't really surprise me that on the same pages, Peeta shows up in the cafeteria, making reality wash all over her. And it also doesn't surprise me when she, once again, observes Finnick holding Annie's hand tightly as they are leaving the cafeteria, while Peeta is close to her. And everything is oh so taunting for her, for them.

I'm rereading The Hunger Games rn and i read that scene in the second book where Finnick tells Katniss to scare Peeta with their cream and i was like huh that's a pretty weird scene right it doesn't really fit the tone of the Hunger Games. But then i finished the book and after reading how Finnick was crying about Peeta it just hit me, like.

Finnick had to give up his entire childhood due to the games. As being the youngest victor at 14 he was obviously traumatized for life. And then a few years later he has to sell his body to the Capital. And then he gets in the 75th HG and he sees these two kids, man. These two 17 year olds fresh off the 74th game. So of COURSE he helps Haymitch so he could form an alliance with these kids because these are kids around the same age he had to sell himself to survive. And of COURSE he sticks with them. We even see him and Johanna try to talk to them after the "If it werent for the baby" statement before the peacekeepers held them back. The first time he sees Katniss he immediatly acts all sarcastic and jokey with her.

They're on the beach just him and these kids and they're so scared and traumatized so he acts all goofy and silly so they can atleast laugh a little bit even if there's danger up ahead.

We see Katniss on that beach acting like a child again for a few minutes even if most of her life she had to be the adult. We just see something that a normal 17 year old would do.

And he promises himself to protect them but he couldn't protect Peeta and he's so sorry and he feels so guilty because he couldn't prevent his fate :(

It's such a shame we never got a snippet of Effie and Haymitch's interviews during the 74th/75th HG. While we do know what was the strategy from Katniss' POV, I would have really enjoyed to see it being put in motion.

Did Effie prepare cards for them too (that were likely ignored by Haymitch)?? Did they just go for it and improvise to make it seem more genuine for the Capitol? What did they say about them?

We do know that Haymitch probably pushed a lot the lovers agenda, but I so wonder what we have missed from those interviews!

I'm assuming in both AUs that Coryo and Lucy Gray are still around by the time of the 74th hunger games and all of that. So how does all that play out in each AU? In the district AU do they have any connection to Katniss at all? In the capitol one does Coryo still have a weird grudge against Katniss or does Lucy Gray talk him into being more sympathetic toward her? What happens to the families of both AUs when the revolution comes?

Just as a fact in both AUs, katniss and Lucy gray are blood related. Katniss is Lucy Grays first cousin twice removed

Capitol AU

Lucy Gray indeed watched Katniss's games with her grandkids after she and Peeta captured the attention of the First Lady during the interviews, particularly impressed by Peeta's bold declaration of love. Despite her reluctance to admit it, Lucy Gray, like many in the Capitol, found herself captivated by their performance. However, she stopped watching after Rue's death and Katniss's emotional rendition of "Deep in the Meadow," which hit too close to home.

Lucy Gray was surprised to learn that Katniss and Peeta emerged as victors, knowing her husband's inner fury over the outcome. She had to work to calm him down, fearing a repeat of what happened 24 years prior with Mr. Abernathy. Though Lucy Gray managed to exert some influence over Coriolanus and his malicious tendencies, it wasn't substantial. She appeared as a graceful, weary figure, exuding the scent of roses, when she met Katniss in person during the end of the victor tour, engaging in a genuine conversation unlike many others in the Capitol. Neither of them knew about their familial connection, a fact that would remain unknown for quite some time.

In the rebellion, Lucy Gray plays a minor role that ultimately safeguards her and her children from facing execution at the end. However, tension arises when Katniss negotiated grant immunity to all victors comes in the way with Coins plan to include Coriolanus's grandchildren in her symbolic Hunger Games, an idea that Lucy Gray finds outrageous.

Lucy Gray decides not to witness her husband's execution. Instead, she stays with Rosalyn and her family, fearing the temptation to do something reckless or foolish. Coriolanus meets his end as he did in the original story, facing the wrath of an angry mob who beat him to death.

District AU

District AU during the 74 hg its not really well thought out and through yet. Coriolanus, portrayed as an emotionless commander of District 12, appears to the public as someone who casually sends people to the Hanging Tree every Tuesday, almost as if it's routine. The identity of the president in this AU is still uncertain (suggestions are welcome), but the Games remain unchanged and continue to operate without necessarily requiring a figure like Coriolanus Snow to oversee them.

Lucy Gray would know Katniss and her family as now being actually involved with the covey in this AU, She might have even cradled Katniss as a baby, echoing her interactions with her father. When Maude Ivory gives birth to her son, Lucy Gray bursts through the door, urgently making her way past Colton with a casual “MOVE BITCH!” to attend to the newest Covey member. Despite Coriolanus holding a secure and influential position in the district, both he and Lucy Gray chose not to reside in the wealthier part of District 12. They prioritize the safety of the kids and Lucy Gray her connection to the Covey, especially Lucy Gray, who dislikes being viewed with disdain. While it's unclear if they later live together, it's imaginable that Lucy Gray steps in to help raise Primrose and Katniss, with Coriolanus maintaining a distant or dismissive presence at best.

Side note: despite Coriolanus's influential position, he is unable to prevent Primrose from being reaped due to unforeseen circumstances or obstacles. Consequently, the Hunger Games proceed as planned with Katniss who volunteers for prim and Peeta as tributes. Haymitch and Lucy Gray would be their mentors.

He did tho went through Katniss names quite some time for getting tesserae for her family, being told each time not to do that. Each year being “this is the last time Everdeen-“, until next year “12, 13, 14…15?!”.

What happens during the revolution I’m not sure but I’m sure not the bombing of 12 that sounds like a 100% snow move (and if none of my babies is going to the heavens above-)

• allison being a mix of cinna’s and effie’s characters: she’s neil’s stylist but she’s also with the rebels and accompanies them to district 13

• matt and dan are the capitol’s darlings, the only pair that was ever allowed to win together; during 75th hg they drop the baby bomb except dan actually is pregnant

• renee is the one with the bow and it’s her that destroys the arena

• andrew was involved with the rebelión (as were most tributes during 75th games) but he didn’t share any info with neil, still not trusting him enough to endanger the fate of his family. later, when andrew is saved and neil is taken by the capitol and drew watches videos of neil’s torture he wishes he told neil. he doesn’t believe in regret but when neil from the video starts crying and murmuring “pleasepleasepleasestopnononoplease” the bad taste in his mouth tastes like regret anyway

• during 74th games neil acts like a chameleon. he does what he always did best and accommodates to his surroundings. he fits seamlessly with the capitol, he’s charming, funny, stealing the hearts of sponsors. during 75th games he’s angry, he’s spitting and throwing punches, unwilling to try to get into anyone’s good graces as he’s a dead man walking either way. andrew likes him much more this way

• nathan sending neil a cleaver as a gift during games and not just any cleaver - the exact one neil was forced to use as a kid and that had been used on him. thus: neil absolutely losing his shit and going batshit crazy in the arena

• unhinged, bloody neil, panting and curling his hands around the cleaver as he stands among bodies he just ripped apart (this one scene is very vivid in my mind and it makes me all kinds of hot and bothered tbh)

• jerjean arc hehe. and I ain’t tellin you nothin more

• kevaaron!! aaron becoming a doctor in district 13 like prim did. aaron meeting kevin and teaching him what a healing, gentle touch is. teaching him how it is to belong with someone not to someone. both of them teaching each other how to step out of their brothers’ shadow and become their own people

so bare with me, im just coming to yell into the tumblr void because I'm so not brave enough to spew my thoughts on tiktok. and no I'm not a Gale stan but i do think he - just like all the characters is very important part of the story. anyways. i kept seeing people mentioning how different the 74th games would have been with Gale and Katniss going in. And a lot of them are like "oh yeah, in the end gale would let Katniss win" or things like "Gale would let the bloodlust take over."

and while those could be true, it's also missing a MAJOR change that Gale brings to the ENTIER dynamic that changes Katniss's games from the second they step foot on the train to the capital.

Peeta (in the movie sorta but mostly book) MAKES Haymitch take them seriously. Gale would have 100% written him off as the "drunk" that he was, thus making Haymitch not realize Katniss's potential at ALL.

This would probably also have led her to show her skills in training as well as missing out on other vital things/skill she learned in training. Like i think her whole mood for training would be drastically sooo different.

Not to mention Gale wouldn't have gotten her NEARLY half the praise from the capital people like Peeta does. EVEN if he pulled a "i came here with the girl I love". Like he would have just come off so less ?? palatable?? charming?? as peta. he would totally lack that draw that the capital people have towards Peeta. He's far too serious and wouldn't have played it as a strategy/popularity game and more of a literal blood sport (that at its heart yes it is).

A line that ALWAYS sticks with me is the line in the movie and the book where Gale meets with Katniss before she goes off to the capital (HG CH3 Pg 40):

"Katniss, it's just hunting. You're the best hunter I know," says Gale.

"Its not just hunting. They're armed. They think." I say.

"So do you. And you've had more practice. Real practice." He says. "You know how to kill."

"Not people," I say.

"How different can it be, really?" says Gale grimly.

The awful thing is that if I can forget they're people, it will be no different at all.

Similarly in the movie he goes on and on about "how they just want a show" and says the above a little less wordy where they go back and forth quickly:

Gale: "You know how to hunt."

Katniss: "Animals."

Gale: "It's no different Katniss."

LIKE UGH. WHAT.

And damn who knows what would happen to Prim and Katniss's mother if BOTH family providers were to have to go off. Would Gale bully his brothers to take care of them?? Would Peta's dad still step in??

like oof that just the little ive thought about how he'd navigate the arena and the concept is FASCINATING. Like if he'd gone in before katniss i could fully see him being a victor. damn.

THEY CALL BRAN AND THE OTHERS: VICTORS ! but what are they really, except for a glorified pack of dogs on a leash? 𝚜𝚎𝚎, 𝚜𝚗𝚘𝚠 𝚔𝚗𝚘𝚠𝚜 𝚒𝚝 ... he owns it with his hand on their leads; but some of them are blind or are just too new to realize it. bran's had time to learn that the collars they wear have spikes in them, but that doesn't stop himself from bleeding dry on them, staining himself with the blood of 𝚚𝚞𝚒𝚎𝚝 𝚛𝚎𝚋𝚎𝚕𝚕𝚒𝚘𝚗.

throwing back a small plated hors d'oeuvres, the victor watches with hollow eyes at the fanciful colors that surround him ( some of which are warn by his fellow victors ) and remains close to the edge of the garden. they were all dragged out of their districts for a purpose, some more condemned than others, but bran had- had his fair share of tonight's events to grow bone tired from them; instead 𝚜𝚙𝚢𝚒𝚗𝚐 over the occasional sip of a wine glass, nodding in greeting at the fellow victor that has settled beside him.

she was smart to escape the crowds, though sooner rather than later the public would find this little retreat away from the party too, they at least for these few moments 𝚑𝚊𝚍 𝚊 𝚛𝚎𝚙𝚛𝚒𝚎𝚟𝚎 and some allowance to breathe without president snow's gaze carving grueling demands into their backs. the same could not be said for some of the others.

Scarian Hunger Games AU!

So! In how the books/movies go, Grian would be Katniss in this scenario, living in District 12. The Mockingjay, symbol of the rebellion against the capital in this Hunger Games universe.

He'd be the one to go instead of Pearl (his sister who was chosen but Grian volunteered in her steed), the other pick will be Big B. Going along with the first book/movie: they play up being "Star crossed lovers" like Peeta, Big B is actually in love with Grian.. by the end of it when they are the two alive they stage that suicide deal with the berries until the announcers like "Congratulations, our winners of the 74th Hunger games!" yada yada- causes the uprising

So moving onto the 2nd book/movie, 75th annual HGs- the president(who i think I might make Evil Xisuma) makes it so past winners are the ones who go into this one (cuz ykno gotta kill Grian, the person who made the districts rebel again) Grian and Big B would’ve been the 2nd and 3rd only winners of District 12 (idk who I wanna be the first winner) MEANING they're both going to be forced into the 75th HG (cuz big b would refuse to let the first winner go) now this is where it will get into my own little idea of how it'll go cuz this is where Scar comes into play! He's a past winner, from 10yrs ago! (What me making him to be like Finnick?? who would've thunk it!!)

Grian and Scar see each other for the first time in the starting ceremony thingy where each victor rides the chariots down the thingy for all of the ppl to see and the president welcoming them or w/e.. Scar would be wearing the same thing finnick was in the film (as seen here)  So ykno, imagine that as Scar, scars and scitties galore, waltzing up to Grian. ofc Grian is like wow- this man is attractive. 

Scar is apart of the rebellion, so is the new games master (who rigged this whole HG like in the book/movie)(who i have no idea who to make that as yet, could be Bdubs, i think thatd be funny) and it's Scar's job to keep Grian alive (BigB helps cuz he is in on it as well) and befriend him, become allies-- Mumbo is gonna be there too (he'd be like Beetee from the book/movies) and also befriend them inside the arena uwu ANYWAYS While getting to know one another the whole week before the games start, training and all that jazz.. Grian starts falling for Scar and same goes for Scar to Grian! So when they get into the games their love blossoms further but ofc they cant show it cuz the world thinks Big B and Grian are together!! DRAMA!! (ofc bigB doesnt care, he's over Grian) anyways yeah itd be tense and stuff until they escape the arena, Grian barely making it out alive

basically, they get to District 13, the rebellion is in full swing lol Grian the face of it as "the mockingjay"

i think i'll make Tango be like who Johanna is in HG.. I think he'd fit her fiery angry self lol 

some Scar angst (like finnicks wowie so original) Victors, who are seen as desirable, are sold off to people after winning.. Those people can do whatever they please to that Victor they bought time with. So you can imagine what he has been through.  He uses that after awhile though, to gain information about a lot of things. and is a big asset to the rebellion cuz of it. 

also also Scar would be around 30ish in this and Grian 20 (this is my au the ages are different *rattles the bars of my cage*)
