Turkkila & Versluis: “We Want To Differentiate Ourselves From Previous Years”
Earlier this month, ice dance couple Juulia Turkkila and Matthias Versluis skated in the show L'Apprenti Sorcier (The Sorcerer's Apprentice) organized in Champéry, Switzerland. The choreography was done by Salome Brunner and Stéphane Lambiel. The Finns were the only ice dancers in the show. How did they end up there?
“Last year, I edited the music for Deniss Vasiljevs' free program The Lion King,” Matthias says. This season, Matthias has done ten different music cuts for Lambiel's students.
“Towards the end of May, Stéphane asked us if we would be interested in joining the show. It was a great honor,” he continues.
“We were with an amazing group of skaters, some of the world's best. It's unique to skate with a live pianist,” Juulia shares.
In the show, Juulia and Matthias performed to Franz Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No 2. They presented wonderful lifts and spectacular movements. The international audience was impressed by the couple's soulful performance.
Finland's top couple has been training hard throughout the summer.
“Early May, we went to Rome for new choreography. In June, we had some vacation time and in July, we went to the Czech Republic for five weeks of summer camp,” Juulia says.
The rhythm dance theme for the 2024–25 season is Social Dancing from the 1950s–1970s.
“We chose music from the 1960s because we suspect that many teams will use disco from the 70s,” Juulia explains.
The pair found a go-go jive song that they immediately liked, and combined it with James Brown's classic I Got You.
“We wanted high energy music that the audience can recognize. There is no slow part in our rhythm dance. It is challenging,” Juulia reflects.
The couple's free dance is the Argentine Tango La Rubia Mirella, which is based on true events. The story was introduced to the couple by an Argentinian tango dancer, who worked with them on and off the ice.
“The beginning is quite soft, but the end is really strong. We want to show that we can be strong and fast. The language of movement is traditional tango, but the program is not built from typical dance movements,” Matthias shares.
Juulia plays a strong woman initially, but is used and abused by men. Matthias plays the role of a villain. The ending is dramatic.
“When there is a clear story, you have to bring in more emotion and drama,” Juulia states.
The pair's programs will first be seen in the Challenger Series competitions, followed by the Grand Prix events in Finland and China.
“We are aiming for medal positions in both GP competitions, and thus a place in the GP final. We are trying to collect world ranking points so that we can start competitions in the right groups during the Olympic season,” the couple says in unison.
With a fierce tango, Juulia and Matthias will be taking a different path this upcoming season, changing their image as classical lyrical skaters.
“We want to differentiate ourselves from previous years. A new combination lift is in the works for the free program, and the choreographic elements will be totally in character with the tango,” Juulia sums up.

Now that you mention it, the Volsung-Nibelung-Dietrich cycle would make a good sitcom if you just focused on the zanier parts. The Nibelung siblings Gullrond, Gunther, Gernot, Giselher, Kriemhild, and (maybe) Hagen, with all their pals. Nephews Dankwart and Patavrid; Gunther's incredibly athletic girlfriend Brynhild and her dog and horse; the Nibelungs' best pal and Brynhild's ex Sigurd, who would be the man you wished your man could be if not his moments of random philosophizing or idiotic life decisions despite knowing what was going to happen; Hagen's best pals, Volker the musician and Walther the nerd; local businessman Rudiger and his sweet, cutesy young daughter; socially maladjusted Dietrich and his gang of pals, who always pop up during hangouts despite nobody inviting them... With less murder and more mayhem, it sure would make a good show!
You know, one thing I will always be irrationally sad about when it comes to the Sigurd/Siegfried cycle and related legends is that... it just never gets any of the wacky, zany, "how tf did you even come up that" adaptations and reimaginings Arthuriana keeps getting.
I mean, sure, you do have adaptations with some humor in it, and different ways to mesh Norse and Continental and even Wagnerian elements, and very different perspectives on the same characters. But Arthuriana really has anything and everything from Disney movies to anime and manga to Monty Python movies and musicals to kids' cartoons to A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court and all its parodies to Young!Arthur/Young!Merlin Slashy Bromance shows to irriverent French sitcoms to loosely-inspired queer YA romance novels to a few recurring and even main characters in "all stories are true" fantasy series like Once Upon a Time or The Librarians. There's even those collector's edition Merlin & Morgana Barbies that were making the rounds on here a while ago!
Meanwhile, the wackiest, less "serious" stuff our Nibelungs get are:
The brief Siegfried & Fafnir cameo in the Mara and the Firebringer movie, where the main mythological figures are actually Loki and Sigyn (can't really say anything about the books, as I haven't read them)
A weird Hungarian (?? iirc??) comedy movie where Siegfried has a talking piglet as his animal companion for some reason and Kriemhild really doesn't like him but she apparently can't just tell him to get lost and stop courting her so she orders Hagen to drive him away from Worms and kill him, which I've only ever managed to "watch" in bits and pieces
The comedic operetta Die lustigen Nibelungen, which I've never managed to find anything about that wasn't in German, so I'm not even really sure what it's actually about
The 70s porn movie The Long Swift Sword of Siegfried, which... tbh, I'd rather stick to fanworks on the nsfw side of things, if the alternative is Siegfried with a pornstache
A Modern/High School AU fantasy romance self-pub I once found where, from what I remember of the summary and excerpt I read, Brunhild is a Mean Girl/Queen Bee who tries to steal Siegfried away from Kriemhild and Hagen is Kriemhild's shitty jealous ex-boyfriend (nothing against High School AUs, or romance novels, or alternative takes on the Kriemhild/Siegfried/Brunhild love triangle, or Hagen/Kriemhild as a ship... but tbh, I'd rather see all those elements handled in vastly different ways XDD)
A couple of old Italian Disney comicbook parodies featuring Donald Duck and his family (but those were mostly Wagner-based, iirc, and then again, an amazing thing about Italian Disney comics is that they will parody literally everything under the sun from the Divine Comedy to Twilight)
... Siegfried (or Sigurd?) showing up in one of the Fate anime series? Or novels? Or games? Not sure. I've only ever watched like two episodes of the Fate/Stay Night anime and then dropped it because I didn't like the normal guy protagonist always rushing to protect his (secretly Fem!King Arthur) supernatural sworn knight just because she was a girl
And... that's it, I think.
And on the one hand, I get it. With Arthuriana, you have adventurous romances and ridiculous (affectionate) quests and so many different bizarre canons and twists on them that even that cartoon where Morgan Le Fay sends an American football team back in time to Camelot (I think that was the plot, at least????) is just another "you know, this might as well happen" situation. I suppose that, at least by comparison, the Nibelungensage & All Adjacent Stuff may appear more grounded and less easy to play with and bring in whatever strange, unlikely new direction you want. Plus, tragic events like Sigurd/Siegfried's death, Brynhild/Brunhild being tricked into marrying a man she doesn't want, and Gudrun/Kriemhild's revenge, or even Dietrich's exile, are just central to it, so that's kind of a downer already, I guess.
... on the other hand, King Arthur's tale literally ends with him and his son killing each other at the end of a bloody civil war. And it's not like anyone's ever had any problem merrily ignoring THAT part to, idk, have everyone in the story be cats.
All this to say, I'd watch the hell out of a Modern AU Nibelung sitcom. Or even just a Nibelung sitcom set in the Middle Ages, or Late Antiquity, or a vague mishmash of the two. The dream for that would be a Galavant-style show with musical numbers and a lot of scenes poking fun at epic and heroic tropes, ngl.
Actually, let's be real: I wouldn't just watch it, I'd probably write fic and make gifs and fanvids for it!

Billy Lenz headcanons 2
Part two baby let's go
TW: child abuse, animal death again :( though I don't really get into the details of either of it
Grew up in a kind of suburban/rural like area, not totally isolated but definitely a bit remote, so a lot of things that happened in the Lenz household went unnoticed by the wider community
Lived close by to a pig farm as a child, hearing their grunts and squeals all day and all night. He quickly adopted the sounds, and now grunting and squealing and snorting are a stim to him. Though, because of this he often got compared to pigs by his family as a child :( he did sometimes sneak away to the pig farm to look at the pigs to get away from his house
Had a crooked broken nose. He either got it broken by one of his parents or Agnes broke it in self defense
As stated in the last part, he loves movies, and one of his absolute favorite ones is the shining. Jack Nicholson is one of his favorite actors, and he watched most of his filmography- exept one flew over the cuckoo's nest. He can't handle that one, it's too real for him
Likes those adult oriented animated movies that came out during the 70's-80's like Fritz the cat, Fantastic planet, Rock and rule, and so on. He also very much enjoys who framed Roger rabbit and cool world, though not really for their technical breakthroughs (perv)
I can see him also appreciating eastern block animated films if he ever got his hands on them, like Russian fairy tale animated films and early Hungarian folk tales, János vitéz etc.
Last unicorn enjoyer but prefers the book to the animated movie (though he enjoys both)
Doesn't really like Disney animated movies though (exept for Roger rabbit). The ones that came out during his adulthood were too "kiddie" for his tastes, and the ones from his childhood trigger him greatly
Has Italian heritage
Hates hippies, though likes a couple of bands that can be considered to make hippie/stoner music like Pink Floyd and the Doors
Yes he relates to Pink from the acclaimed concept album/rock opera movie Pink Floyd's The Wall why do you ask
Every weed is scary weed to him, don't let this man bake
Cat's are his favorite animal, aside from pigs, and he would feed the local stray cats as a child
Would honestly be catkin in a modern au
Garfield is his favorite mediocre but cute Saturday morning comic strip <3 he relates to Jon a lot
Doesn't like children, they freak him out, he would never want to have children and that's for the best
Has an appreciation for naive/amateur/outsider art, and he himself does make his own collages and drawings from time to time, whenever he's mentally stable enough to do that. His works are crude, both technically and thematically, and there is a very morbid quality to them. One of his great inspirations is Henry Darger
Has hoarder tendencies
Loves soft things, like blankets, pillows and plushies. His nest in the attic is like the most comfortable pillow fort there is
Yes the plushies are stolen directly from children
Honestly has his own collection of small, tinny , insignificant shinny things he found/stole. If he ever gets his own place his house would look like Howl Movingcastles room just more... Dirty and covered in cat hair
Liked to lay out all the things he stole from the girls in the sorority house on the attic floor, and admire his spoils from time to time
Yes he is a panty snatcher why do you ask
Doesn't like people staring/looking at him, though he himself has a staring problem
Is afraid of dogs, he got bitten by a stray dog one time when he ran away from home when he was just three years old. A stranger who just so happened to be passing by saw what was happening and defended him, killing the dog in the process. Then he took Billy right back to his family home, like any good Samaritan would. Sometimes Billy's nightmares have bloody, gaping black dogs in them.
#billy lenz#parental abuse#tw abuse#child abuse#animal death#Ufff I projected for his media preferences so much ugh#Let me know if i should tag anything else#Billy Lenz headcanons

#Did you know that this is a cover?📌
"But we all often glorify the former, not knowing that we glorify only the latter..."
Agree, it's a bit insulting if you were the first to perform (or even worse, write and perform) some kind of song, and all the laurels and national love were collected by someone else's cover, which, in addition, many perceive as the original.
«Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon»
Neil Diamond The Bang Years 1966-1968
Needless to say, the soundtrack to the movie "Pulp Fiction" (1994) is almost all good. But there is also a favorite here - the charming song "Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon" performed by the band URGE OVERKILL. The one that Uma Thurman's character dances to before sniffing the wrong powder.
youtube
Knowing the love of director Quentin Tarantin for the "old" music of the 1950s and 70s, it is not surprising that the song turned out to be old - albeit in a new performance. It was written and released as a single back in 1967 by American singer Neil Diamond. And, although the song was already in the TOP 10 at that time, over the years it had been forgotten.
youtube
«Hallelujah»
The song "Hallelujah", which has already tired the listener with countless covers, actually went to its glory for a very long time. The original 1984, recorded by the author of the song - Leonard Cohen - almost no one noticed.
youtube
In 1994, "Hallelujah" was recorded by Jeff Buckley on his album Grace. He abandoned the rich arrangement and performed the song simply with an acoustic guitar. As it turned out, it is this kind of performance that will really touch the audience. But the young man will not live to see this moment. After all, at first his album was not selling well, and in 1997 Buckley drowned in the river. Only 10 years later, "Hallelujah" was re-released as a single, the single became "platinum", after which there was no end of those who wanted to sing the song.
youtube
«White Dove»
On the collections of ballads by the German band SCORPIONS, released since 1994, you can find a composition called "White Dove" ("White Dove"), dedicated, as it is not difficult to guess, to "world peace". Many rock music fans of the older generation know perfectly well where the legs of this beautiful song "grow from." But the younger ones may need to be enlightened...
youtube
To do this, we need to go back 25 years to the time of the existence of the Eastern European socialist bloc, which included Hungary. It was in Hungary that one of the most famous rock bands of the socialist camp, called OMEGA, appeared.
The career of Magyar rockers began quite successfully. In 1968, they were noticed by British manager John Martin and invited to tour the Foggy Albion. OMEGA's debut album was also released there under the characteristic name "Omega Red Star from Hungary" "OMEGA — red star from Hungary" (at home the record was called differently "Trombitas Fredi es a rettenetes emberek").
youtube
The group wanted to record a second album in Britain, but the Hungarian leadership did not visit OMEGA to the capitalists They liked it, and they were banned from traveling to Britain. But in vain. It was the 1969 record, "10000 lepes" ("10000 steps"), that the band released very successfully.
It was on it that OMEGA's biggest hit "Gyongyhaju Lany" ("Girl's Hair") was recorded — a beautiful ballad with a fashionable psychedelic tinge and a piercing anthemic chorus that could be sung along with the audience. In the spirit of the times, there was also a romantic and mystical text about a mysterious beauty with pearl hair, instilling light and hope into people's souls.
youtube
In 1970, "Gyongyhaju Lany" was released as a single and topped the Hungarian charts for 60 weeks.
Feeling the great potential of the song, the band recorded two more versions called "Pearls in her Hair": English ("Pearls in her hair") and German ("Perlen im Haar").
to be continued....

Eighth Doctor Reviews: The Eighth Doctor Adventures; Series One
In honor of me re-listening to the first series of the 8DAs and it being rereleased as a box set I'm going to be giving a little review.
I mostly listen to this at work, and jot down notes and the like pretty quickly.
Also if you are interested in this series it is one of the few that is free on spotify: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/704B1LamEbU2wNPDmfwLQ8
Doctor: The Eighth Doctor
Companion: Lucie Miller
#1&2: Blood of the Daleks
Blood of the Daleks is an absolutely amazing start to this range. Quickly introducing a new companion, showing the state that 8 is in and giving us one of the best Dalek stories that Big Finish have ever done.
Lets talk about Lucie Miller, I absolutely love Lucie Miller. She instantly endears herself to the listener, and her 'antagonistic' relationship with 8 is, "Chef's Kiss". She has that Rose Tyler energy but without the melodrama of season 2. In short Lucie kicks ass.
This is a great jumping on point for anyone at all interested in the 8th doctor and has seen the new series. This was made for people who were watching Doctor Who in the RTD era.
This story has that super interesting contrast between two factions of Daleks that I loved in Remembrance of the Daleks. Also Hayley Atwell (Yes Agent Carter) plays the villain in this and is just killing it.
I really recommend this story, It's free and just one of the most amazing places to start.
fun quotes:
"More Beans please" - The Eighth Doctor
"FISH AND CHIPS FOR ALL!" - The Eighth Doctor
Rating 9/10
#3: The Horror of Glam Rock
A just fine adventure set in the 70s. The name is a cool play off the Horror of Fang Rock. I love the Glam Rock/Bowie vibes of the music. Bernard Cribbins plays an asshole music agent, and it is super weird to hear Wilf shit talk people. We get to meet Lucie's aunt Pat who seems super cool. I love that even though we can't meet Lucie's family in the modern day we get to understand her more through her connections.
The monster in this one is kind of lame, and the constant whining of Tommy Tomorrow is exhausting
Rating 7.5/10
#4: Immortal Beloved
Now this one is super interesting, an extremely Shakespearian story. It's very obviously taking a lot from Romeo and Juliet. I'm not sure why but this one really spoke to me, I love the fusion of Greek mythology and future technology. The whole twist of the piece is also super engaging from a moral standpoint. Also the guy who played Winston Churchill in NewWho plays the antagonist Zeus and is delightfully evil, like really despicable.
Rating 8.5/10
#5: Phobos
This listen through is actually my first time listening to Phobos, I skipped it on my first listen through of the 8DAs season one. I just hate this story and it's the only one I might actually call bad. It's the least fun kind of goofy and follows a far too Scooby Doo type plot for Doctor Who. I do like the idea of this world being a travel destination for thrill seekers to visit, that was a cool bit of world building.
Rating 6/10
#6: No More Lies
When I first listened to this one I thought I had skipped something because of the fact that it starts en media res, but it really works in this story. Zimmerman is a really interesting character. I'm always happy to see a time loop when they pop up. The vortisaurs from Storm Warning reappear and are always a lovely bit of world building for 8. Also the song sung in Hungarian is just wonderfully haunting,
Rating 8/10
#7&8 Human Resources
We finally get some resolution to the mystery of Lucie set up in Blood of the Daleks. The concept of what the company they work at is so fucking cool, like absolutely *chef's kiss*. I always love when the Doctor is thrown into a mundane situation and him roleplaying as a big shot office worker is so fun. Lucie and Karen also have a very funny dynamic. We also get the full introduction of the character of the Headhunter who has been trying to track Lucie down through the whole season. I always love when the Cybermen are handled well and this one does some great things with them. There are so many twists and turns in this one that I simply cannot spoil, but I am in love with this story. Also fuck Straxus, all my homies hate Straxus.
Rating 9/10
Overall this season struggles in some places, but for the low low price of free on Spotify I cannot recommend it enough. Lucie and 8 have an electric dynamic, and this season is tailor made to get NewWho fans into both the 8th Doctor and Big Finish in general, and the two two parters that feature the Cybermen and the Daleks present themselves as real standouts of the whole set.

The Breakers Music Room —
The MUSIC ROOM, designed by Richard van der Boyen and Allard et Fil, reflects the French Baroque interior the Vanderbilts would have seen in places like the Paris Opera House, and was the setting for family weddings and debutante parties. Gold and silver leaf, blue-grey Campan marble from France, mirrors, and crystal light fixtures combine to make a glittering effect for evening concerts and receptions. The spirit of music and numerous great composers are celebrated in the ceiling painting. This room and furnishings, in addition to those in the Morning Room, were designed and constructed in France then shipped to this location for installation.
————————————————————————
The Breakers Morning Room —
The wall paneling in the MORNING ROOM was designed by Richard van der Boyen, who carved elaborate garlands and figures in the late Renaissance style. Classical mythology and allegories decorate this room, from the painted allegory of the four seasons on the ceiling, to the Muses who appear in the corners of the room, painted on platinum leaf panels.
The room also displays portraits of Cornelius Vanderbilt II by the preeminent American portrait painter, John Singer Sargent, and the Count Laszlo Széchényi and Countess Gladys Széchényi, by the Hungarian artist Philip Alexius De László. Countess Széchényi was born Gladys Vanderbilt, the youngest of Cornelius and Alice's children. In 1908, Gladys married Count Laszlo Széchényi, a member of Hungary's premier aristocratic family and a minister to the Court of St. James in London and, later, to the United States.
When her mother Alice passed away in 1934, Countess Széchényi inherited The Breakers. In 1948, to raise funds for the Preservation Society's restoration of Hunter House, Countess Széchényi opened The Breakers to the public for tours. That same year, she leased The Breakers to the Preservation Society for $1.00 a year and continued to fund the maintenance of the house. The Preservation Society purchased The Breakers in 1972 for approximately $400,000. As an early member and supporter of the Preservation Society, Countess Széchényi made a major contribution to the preservation of Newport's architectural heritage.
——————————————————————————
The Breakers Breakfast / Dining Room —
The BREAKFAST ROOM served as both breakfast room and informal family dining room. The table, which may be extended to seat 16 would have seated the entire family or served as seating for a small, informal dinner or luncheon. One of the premier decorators for America's elite families, Jules Allard et Fils Cules Allard & Sons) of Paris, supplied the Louis XV style furniture for the room and decided on the room's color scheme. The Vanderbilts were surrounded by imagery of the harvest.
Look around to see fruits and vegetables plentifully adorning the walls. The 12 rose-colored stone columns are solid alabaster and draw your eyes upward to the ceiling painting of the goddess Aurora heralding the dawn. The massive chandeliers and wall sconces in the Imperial design are made of French Baccarat crystal, and were piped for gas and wired for electricity at the time the house was built. The crown shaped tops indicate the style, while the rings on the chains were used to adjust the flow of gas.
Allard and Sons of Paris assisted Hunt with furnishings and fixtures, Austro-American sculptor Karl Bitter designed relief sculpture, and Boston architect Ogden Codman decorated the family quarters. The mansion covers nearly an acre of the 13-acre property and has 70 rooms including 48 bedrooms for family and staff. There are 27 fireplaces. It was equipped with electricity – still a novelty in houses during the Gilded Age – as well as gas for lighting.
The Breakers has entertained presidents, royalty and guests from across the world for more than 125 years and today is visited by hundreds of thousands of people each year. It is the flagship of the Newport Mansions and a world-famous iconic image of the City-by-the-Sea. The Breakers was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1994.

France Gall Part 1
Isabelle Gall (France Gall is her stage name) is a French cult singer born in 1947 in Paris. Her musical career began at the age of 16 in the 1960s, making her an artist of the “Yéyé era (= representative idol of French adolescents of the 1960s).
her first successes between 1964 and 1966 were naive songs, almost children's songs :
youtube
youtube
The whole world will discover her by her participation in Eurovision in 1965 with the song " Poupée de cire poupée de son "
youtube
( She won the competition but lost in the same night , her first boyfriend the singer Claude François , who was jealous of her success and who will leave her coldly by a phone call )
the song will be a worldwide hit ! With alternative versions :
In Japanese :
youtube
In German :
youtube
And in Italian :
youtube
Other international artists will also cover the song in Arabic, Spanish Chinese , Czech , Danish , Estonian , Finnish , Dutch , Hungarian , Hebrew, Korean , Portuguese , Russian , Slovack, Swedish , Vietnamese and English …
( If you're interested by discovering these versions don't hesitate to discover my Masterlist ;)
France Gall will appear in the legendary “Photo of the Century” ( which brings together the greatest french artists of the time )
(top left of the image with a pink jacket)
In 1966 her song “Les Sucettes” caused controversy.
The composer Serge Gainsbourg had fun having this song (with its particularly salacious double meaning) performed by the 18-year-old girl who was in no way aware of the true meaning of the song.
This scandal will put a big damper on her career, she still sings but no longer interests the public. Everything could have stopped if she hadn't met a man named Michel Berger…

Hungarian GP 24 Part 3: You're not you when you're Hungary
We pick up in Lap 42 as Oscar is getting a radio message that is quite ominous in hindsight.
Laps 1-32 | Laps 33-41 | Laps 42-55 | Laps 56-70
Lap 42: ominous music the remix
Lap 43 Lewis and Charles on new tires, everyone else old. First mention by the commentators on Lando undercutting Oscar, followed by the assumption that McLaren would only do it as a tactical move to keep Lewis from taking 2nd. Note that the gap between Oscar and Lando has been slowly widening since lap 38 despite the standing order that Lando can push for p1. Commentators say Lewis is 29 secs behind “the mclarens” but about 1 sec faster pace. Given the 20 sec pit stop time they should pit soon but can both make it back out ahead.
Lap 44 commentators say there is radio chatter between Oscar and the team if he can make his expected number of laps before pit and he says yes. Gap to Lewis has dropped to 28 secs. Gap between Oscar and Lando has widened to about 2 secs
End of 44 mclarens are approaching another set of cars to lap. Slower in traffic
Lap 45 commentators say that a few laps ago Lando’s radio said he had “unacceptable speed around turn 4” uh ok you told him to race tho? This could be why Oscar is opening up a gap again. Also note that the “race until mid-40s” benchmark has definitely arrived. Pitstop when my dudes
LAP 45 LANDO PIT
HANG ON WHERES MY CALCULATOR
Ok the moment of the call.
Ok the gap from Oscar to Lewis was 27.064. We can definitely see that Lewis is gaining about a lap per second as the commentators said (lap 43 = 29 secs, 44 = 28, 45 = 27). Lando has been slowly losing speed compared to Oscar but over the course of about 5 laps; between 44 and 45 he only lost about 0.05
We can sort of piece together the full picture tho. Lando is getting scolded for pushing his tires too hard between laps 40-44 meanwhile Oscar in 44 says that his tires are fine and he can keep his pace. The gap between them is slowly widening either because Lando is slowing down or Oscar is speeding up. Lewis is quickly catching up. The team decides to send in Lando 1st because they’re afraid he’s going to be overtaken
I think this is kind of a stupid fear tho? Ok, take the worst scenario: Lando has worn out his tires and is slowing down. Even if he slows down the ENTIRE amount from laps 39-45 in ONE lap 46 AND Lewis gains a full second, Lando specifically should still have 23 seconds for a pit stop. As the commentators are always telling me that the average pit stop is 20-21 seconds, that seems like more than enough time to get it done unless for some reason your pit lane fucks it up entirely. I should have taken notes on the time lengths of their last pit stops 😭
So to me this seems like they made a risk management calculation and picked a conservative approach rather than a risky one. With hindsight I think they should have pitted a lap earlier 🤷♀️ however this is definitely a high risk high reward sport so if they’re going to pit later they should at least put their whole pussy into it instead of chickening out halfway
The conspiracy theorist in me is wondering if at the lap 39 ok to race papaya their two teams stopped sharing data/working together and then got overwhelmed and panicked when they tried to come back together for the pit stop strategy
A few last notes before I unpause: Lap 39 Lando getting told to race and then immediately getting scolded for… racing. Meanwhile lap 42 Oscar getting “don’t worry about Hamilton” and lap 44 he can make the tires work. They were both getting such confused information and the pit fiasco is so clearly a team error with all the pieces laid out. They both followed orders until Lando (understandably) got fed up with following orders (race, pit) and then getting scolded for doing so (don’t go fast, let Oscar pass). Oscar’s 42 and 44 radios are interesting too since we can clearly see that the team changed their mind on strategy in between those radios. At lap 42, Oscar was going to pit first. By lap 44, Lando was going to pit first. Again I think they waited too long to make a decision—clearly lap 43 gave them the data that Lewis was becoming a threat and they needed to pit. Oscar 44 Lando 45 would have given them plenty of pit time without the undercut.
Lando’s pit only took 21.249 😭
Lap 46 Lando is on scrubbed medium tires. Commentators immediately assume that Lando will be ordered to give up the position to Oscar. We get this on Oscars radio: “OK Oscar, Lando has pitted to cover Hamilton, to make sure he covers Hamilton. We’ll manage that situation, best pace from you now. Best pace. Best pace. Don’t worry about Lando.” From beginning to end of 46 Lando gained over a second on the race pace so the tires were immediately helpful at the same rate as Lewis.
Lap 47 Oscar’s pit. Lando has by now gained about 2.5 seconds on the race pace. Commentators were a bit surprised that Oscar didn’t pit on lap 46 given that the gap between them
Lap 48 commentators say that Oscar has again had a message from radio saying that they plan to reestablish him in p1. So that’s twice before Oscar even pits where Lando (as far as we know without the full team radio) may not have heard that message at all yet. Oscar’s pit was slower, 21.823
Lap 48 commentators debating fair for Oscar to have p1 back vs Lando needing points to challenge Max for championship. Lando’s radio: “OK Lando, Oscar has just pitted. He’ll likely come out just behind you. We’d like to re-establish the order, at your convenience.” He’s 3 seconds ahead of Oscar when he gets that message
The central conflict is already established between Oscar “focus on your own race, don’t worry about Lando” and Lando “we’d LIKE to swap at YOUR CONVENIENCE”. Again they’re getting slightly different messages re: order vs suggestion and priority of swapping vs racing it out
1st thing Oscar does out of the pit is hit the gravel trap 😭 why are you making this more difficult for yourself
Lap 48 Lando sets the fastest lap which was, if you check closely at all of my screenshots, held by Charles for the last 100 years
Lap 49 commentators immediately assume Lando will give over the position to Oscar
Different commentator mentioning that Lando isn’t going to make it an easy decision for McLaren. Important for Oscar to do the best driving of his life and stick close to Lando to make the decision easier; Lando naturally trying to do the opposite. This is another place I feel the team really went wrong. If a swap is what they wanted, they should have ordered them to swap by lap 50 and then race it out after that (exception for threats to the 1-2). Or some other of the million possible plans that aren’t actively working against the drivers’ desires to compete and win. Honestly, even though it would suck for Oscar, it honestly might have been easier to understand as a driver if they just said “lando is our star driver, he gets p1 priority, if you want it race him for it.” I also feel obligated to point out, again, that Oscar has at this point flubbed it off the track twice, while Lando at least previously was abusing his tires too much. They’ve both made mistakes that are obvious even to my newbie self. Neither of them have had some A+ no hitter race that somehow merits complete protection.
Also lap 49, not mentioned in the broadcast but I can see it in the radio transcript, Lando gets a reminder to look after his tires after setting fastest lap
Lap 51 Oscar is still 3.6 seconds back from Lando and he gets this radio: “OK Oscar, so, once you get to Lando, we’ll swap positions. We’ll swap position, but we want to avoid Lando having to give up a lot of race time.” So his instructions have now changed from “don’t worry about Lando” to “catch up to Lando”. Commentators second my thinking that this is ok to race the papaya car 2.0
Lap 52 commentators note that in order to catch Lando, Oscar will have to deal with the slipstream off Lando’s car, which will slow Oscar down
Lap 53 Lando’s radio: WJ: “And Lando, radio check, please. LN: “Yes, loud and clear.” WJ: “OK, save the tyres at Turn 4 and Turn 11, please.” These radio instructions can’t stop me because I can’t hear 😂 This is the 3rd save your tires message to Lando (somewhere laps 39-44 as well as 49 and 53) with corner 4 being specifically called out twice. So Oscar has gone off track before and after his pit, and Lando has worn out his tires before and after pit. They’re both making the same mistake repeatedly rather than learning from previous errors. Like I said neither of them are significantly more perfect than the other at this point.
Also 53, Oscar has made up over .6 of a second, but Lando is stuck in traffic behind (lapped) 16th place

also! can you tell us a bit about nadia van dyne? i see you write drabbles for her and post about her sometimes but i know NOTHING about her! like? a wasp that was in the red room? fascinating, tell me more
MY BLORBO, NADIA VAN DYNE!
How do I even begin to explain Nadia Van Dyne? Nadia Van Dyne is flawed, but flawless. She has one of the highest IQs in the Marvel Universe and started the Agents of G.I.R.L. to champion women scientists and heroes. I hear her genetic ability to shrink is insured for $10,000. I hear she's taking driving lessons... with Carol Danvers. Her favorite musical artist is Dazzler. One time, she met Doctor Doom on a plane, and they became best friends and he sort of became a good guy for a while. One time, she punched Monica Rappaccini in the face... and it was awesome.
::record scratch::
Okay, now that that's out of my system, seriously for real though, Nadia is the best. Every part of her character creation is that she was made to be my best blorbo girl. I love her.
Quick biography:
Way way way back in the day, Dr. Henry "Hank" Pym fell in love with a Hungarian entomologist (and political prisoner) named Dr. Maria Trovaya, who escaped to the US. She is who got him interested in ants. They got married. They went on their honeymoon to Hungary, where the Red Room kidnapped Maria and faked her murder so that Hank/the Americans wouldn't try to get her back. Hank had a nervous breakdown and got REALLY into ants, became Ant-Man, etc.
MEANWHILE: Maria is alive and being held captive by the Red Room when it's discovered that SHE'S PREGNANT WITH HANK'S BABY. She gives birth in the Red Room and is immediately killed, because now the Red Room doesn't need her -- they have her baby, who they can train from literal birth AND who is the product of TWO geniuses instead of just being ONE genius. Maria survives just long enough to name her Nadia, which means "hope" (because Hope Van Dyne in the MCU actually came first, and Nadia is an homage to her).
(Double meanwhile: Hank meets Janet Van Dyne, whom he thinks looks like 'a less beautiful Maria,' and he is a piece of shit. He marries Janet, is physically and emotionally abusive, Janet gets out, Hank turns into Ultron, it's a whole thing.)
Back in the Red Room, Nadia's FIRST MEMORY IN THIS WORLD is of A KIND MAN WITH A SILVER ARM TELLING HER SHE'S SMART. ::cries for 70 years::
Nadia is raised and trained to be a Red Room agent, but she's put in the science division that I'm forgetting the name of, so she does not have to pass as many physical tests as other Red Room girls (for example, she only has to be able to kill someone in like 14 ways instead of 27). She has one friend in the science division, who is much more into the killing aspect of the Red Room than Nadia is and protects her: Ying. However, because of their closeness, Ying is taken away and reassigned to the normal assassin program. Nadia is alone.
Nadia is determined to escape the Red Room and bring Ying with her, so she eventually manages to acquire black market Pym Particles and experiments with them. She integrates their size-changing properties into her being because hand-wavey superhero science and escapes into the Quantum Realm and thereafter, to America.
She makes her way to Hank's last known address in New Jersey, but oh no, Hank is dead sort of, and also Ultron, sort of, whatever, he's gone. Nadia is crushed that he is dead (she doesn't know about the Ultron part). Nadia decides to become the Wasp and join the Avengers. She saves Vision's life and is like, "YAY I SAVED MY NEPHEW'S LIFE!" and she's not technically wrong. Jarvis immediately is like, "I am adopting this child. Let's go meet Janet."
Janet and Nadia meet by saving the President from a microbomb, idk, it's a whole thing. Anyway, they meet, and Janet immediately just totally falls in love with Nadia and takes her out for a day on the town to experience all of the things she'd never gotten to do before, while living in the Red Room, like ice cream and not being in the Red Room.
Then Civil War II happens and idk whatever.
Then Nadia decides that she is going to form the Agents of G.I.R.L. and that's where her first solo series starts, and you should read it because it's SO GOOD!!!!
Fun Nadia Facts:
Canon aroace!
Canon bipolar representation! Her manic episode is the best-written one that I've ever read.
Canon cute language mix-ups and Russian accent!
Canon thinks of Viv Vision, whom I also deeply love, as her great-niece, and she's again, not wrong!
Janet and Bobbi are co-raising her and Ying! And I ship Janet/Bobbi so much!
Nadia is a badass optimistic traumatized scientist ballerina angel superhero, and I love her.

Hi! Could I ask what Chess is about? Your posts on it have caught my interest.
GOOD QUESTION!!! apologies in advance this is going to be a bit of a long answer
so back during the cold war, chess competitions ended up being, like, a Big Thing. it was one of the ways the ussr liked to prove their intellectual superiority, so during the 70s & 80s most of the world champions and challengers were russian. this meant that whenever one of the players was american (specifically bobby fischer) the competitions turned into really big media events, since it's an american vs. a russian and whoaaa we need to prove our country is better at chess so we can prove communism sucks or something
anyway, tim rice (most well-known for working with alw on jesus christ superstar & evita) saw these competitions and went, "hey, that'd be a kickass musical." so he teamed up with the music-writing duo from ABBA to write it.
the resulting musical was chess, which is about. Um. Well. it's about chess. but it's also about the cold war and politics and commercialism and national identity and divorce. (the divorce part is important i truly can't stress enough how much divorce is in this musical)
our... protagonist? one of our main characters is freddie trumper, a communism-hating american and (usually) the current world chess champion. he sucks. i love him dearly but he sucks. his second is florence vassy, a hungarian displaced from her home as a young child due to the 1956 invasion of budapest. she is only slightly more normal than freddie.
freddie's opponent is the russian player anatoly sergievsky, who also sucks, but in a different and more subtle way. he has a wife named svetlana who is possibly the only guiltless character in this show.
the drama at the world chess championship is only upped when anatoly and florence fall in love and florence helps anatoly defect from the ussr to england. freddie gets really upset about this and fires/breaks up (it's ambiguous as to if they're romantically involved or not) with florence. after this anatoly is (usually) the new world chess champion, although sometimes it's still freddie and they're just taking a break before the match finishes.
the exact plot of act ii varies a lot depending on which script is being used, but in very general terms: anatoly is playing a chess match. he wants to win and become/remain world champion. his soviet team wants him to lose and come back to russia. various espionage plots ensue to incentivize anatoly to return home. in the end, he wins the match (usually. sometimes he loses) but returns home anyway, leaving florence behind. no one is happy. there's like no good ending here.
one of the interesting things about chess is that there are like a hundred different versions of it. there's two main scripts (london and broadway) but there's tons of variation even within the two scripts, and some that combine elements of both (like sydney and danny "the bane of my existence" strong's book). and there's some pretty significant changes from script to script, right down to who wins the final chess game. it's really interesting.
if you want me to elaborate/clarify any part of this i'm more than happy to do so, but i hope this offers some insight as to what chess is about?? it's a terrible show and also my current favorite musical. hope this helps 👍
#...yeah this is long. you've activated my trap card lmao#thank you for asking though i love talking about chess 💞#asks#mythologeekwriter

This Week’s Horrible-Scopes
It’s time for this week’s Horrible-Scopes! So for those of you that know your Astrological Signs, cool! If not, just pick one, roll a D12, or just make it up as you go along. It really doesn’t matter. Better yet! Check out “Heart of the Game, Fredonia” and see if they can sell you those D12’s with the symbols on them. Tell them “Shujin Tribble” sentcha. And “Hail, Hail, Fredonia!”
This week… yeah, we’re going back to the music collection’s shuffleboard - but we’re limiting it to the Sound Effects section! You thought musical cues was bad before? Well folks.. Ya ain’t heard NUTHIN’ yet!
Aries
Although yours is listed as “Arcade”, it includes the sounds of some driving game and Asteroids. The best part about Asteroids is… there were sequels that were actually better than the original in almost every way. Asteroids Deluxe replaced Hyperspace with a shield; Space Duel gave you co-operative ship gameplay, and Blasteroids replaced the vector graphics with sprites, spaceship morphing, and an actual BOSS to beat! This week… find a bowling alley with an actual arcade and PLAY!
Taurus
You get the sounds of a car door opening and shutting. No locks, no latches being clicked open, nothing except that. Which is exactly how your week will be, Taurus - all business, no pleasure. This week find your pleasure where you can in food, ‘cause you sure ain’t havin’ fun any other way. Pick up cheap Chinese takeaway on Friday - you can make your own fried rice for breakfast on Saturday Morning.
Gemini
This one is fun. Listed as “Tank Army”, it sounds less like a tank and more like a 70 year old tractor with a lawn mower attachment under it trying to hold on for dear life. This is your way of knowing that you need to get more exercise; and you have no excuses this time; Mall Walking is still a thing. So lace up your Converse and head out to the food court.
Cancer Moon-Child
Your sounds are the ambiance from the Cafe’ Pecs in southern Hungary. For over three and-a-half minutes all we get are the overlapping Hungarian voices, where not a single piece of silverware can be heard. No spoons, no cups and saucers, no one walking around… Just chatter. This week have a sit-down and just listen to the voices in your head. Some of them would like to have a word with you.
Leo
The randomizer just picked for you…. “Two horses pass at trot on gravel”. Truth be told, we’ve got no real idea on what to think about this one. There’s the old adage about how “Inside you there are two animals”, but of all the animals they might be, we’d never pick horses for you. This week… Honestly, we don’t know. How about you go find a Brannock Device and put it to good use.
Virgo
Oh, perfect. You got one of the shortest sound effects in the collections. At BARELY 1 second worth, it’s Big Macintosh from My Little Pony Friendship is Magic saying, “...eeyup!”. No, we’re not suggesting you watch the show - though you could do worse than that one. This week try agreeing with everything for just one day solid. After all… What’s The Worst That Could Happen?
Libra
Apparently a bunch of you people are celebrating a BUNCH of birthdays this week, so without wasting any more time, here are the names… Michelle (Susan) Jean (Mark) Fran (Carrie) Jay (Phil) Cirus (Theo) Stephany (Noah) Erica (Wolfgang) Timothy (Aaron) Jerry. Happy birthday to you all. And if you didn’t hear your name called, stop being so selfish! It’s their birthday too, you know. Learn to be more… you know.. Less Like ‘You’.
Scorpio
You get the sounds of Telex And Typewriter. You’re so young you probably don’t even know what Telex was used for, but you enjoy the fruits of its technology. We know you know what a typewriter is, but we’ll bet you’ve never changed a Daisy Wheel even once. This week, get your fingers dirty on red and black ribbon ink.
Sagittarius
NOW we’re talkin’! From the Star Trek Original Series Sound Effects CD… Yes, that’s an OFFICIAL CD out there! With 69 tracks no less! (*NICE!*). You get “Enterprise Doors Open Into Transporter Room”. And before you think that’s not a cool sound… DUDE! It’s a background warble that’s just all KINDS of soothing at night. Turn that on for a Repeat Forever when you go to sleep, and you’ll totally sleep like a baby. This week… Find the track on YouTube and play it. You’ll see we’re right. And you need the sleep.
Capricorn
Some of you are too young to remember this sound effect. Most of you likely know the old AOL Dial Up sounds, but we’ll bet you don’t know the difference between K56flex and X2 handshaking sounds. If you thought you can tell the difference, you’re kidding yourself. Unless you worked I.T. in some capacity you wouldn’t know which was which. This week… be proud if someone calls you a “Phreak”... spelled with a P-H.
Aquarius
You’ve got a sound that isn’t annoying on its own, surprisingly. The sound of an ATM and its internal mechanical parts at work, like the receipt printer and the money counter. The annoying part is that you… Ok, look.. We promise this isn’t personal, OK?! –you keep saying “ATM… Machine”. PLEASE! Please, just… just stop saying that. It’s just an “ATM” or “Cash Machine”. It’s not an “Automated Teller Machine Machine”, ok? This week.. Just.. stop talking so much.
Pisces
You’re gunna get a sound effect that almost everyone, everywhere, will recognize. Kids have been imitating it for YEARS, and we’ll bet you have too! No, it’s not the Six Million-Dollar Man Bionic sound, you know.. Like the Eye? That goes (DOO-DOO-DOO-dahh-dahh-dahh-dahh). No, you get the one that goes, “Vr–VOO-Vah-vah-VEE!” That’s right, you get the sound of The Transformers changing from their robot to vehicle forms because… DAMNIT! We’re STILL pissed off about Rodimus Prime last week, OK? We’re NOT letting that one go! Just… Just deal with it, ok? (*DUDE! Take it easy, man!*) I’m fine! I’m ok, ok… So.. This week, Pisces… Uhm… Buy more boxes of tissues.
And THOSE are your Horrible-Scopes for this week! Remember if you liked what you got, we’re obviously not working hard enough at these. BUT! If you want a better or nastier one for your own sign or someone else’s, all you need to do to bribe me is just Let Me Know! These will be posted online at the end of each week via Tumblr, Twitter, Facebook and Discord.

Movies I watched this Week #135 (Year 3/Week 31):
First watch: The MGM classic Christmas musical Meet me in St. Louis. Delightful all the way, with Judy Garland and the wonderful child actress Margaret O'Brien (Photo Above) as Tootie. 1950's Nostalgia for an idealized middle class world.
🍿
Journey to Italy, my (first?) by Roberto Rossellini. A devastating, compassionate study in a dissolution of a marriage, with a story line reminiscent of James Joyce's melancholic novella 'The dead'. 9/10.
🍿
A second chance, another of the half a dozen Danish collaborations between director Susanne Bier and screenwriter Anders Thomas Jensen. And again with the music by Swedish composer Johan Söderqvist, which builds up as much to the mood. A hard story of drug abuse, baby abuse and mental disorders that lead to suicide.
/Female /
🍿
Joyride, the new raunchy Asian-American girlfriends road-trip in China comedy. Gross out and hilarious for the most parts, with some sit-com deliveries and tropes. The Hangover + Bridesmaids, with an all-female crew. 7/10.
Also with 'Palm Springs' "Misty" as a hysterically funny drug smuggler on the train!
/ Female /
🍿
Like Alfonso Cuarón’s Mexican 'Roma', Sebastián Silva's Chilean 'The Maid', and other South American dramas of recent decades, The Second Mother by Brazilian Anna Muylaert tells of a live-in domestic worker who dedicates her life to the well-fare of her affluent employers. Then her daughter who she hadn't seen in 10 years arrives, like 'a magical visitor' and upends the stable household. Power relationship between classes and families. 6/10.
/female/
🍿
The U.S. and the Holocaust, the most recent Ken Burns PBS documentary. Another sober and harrowing 7 hour series, narrated again by Peter Coyote, and featuring Timothy Snyder and Deborah Lipstadt. Another deep dive into America's relationship with race and immigration, genocide, xenophobia, antisemitism and isolationism. 9/10.
🍿
When I was 13, the greatest comic I knew was Louis de Funès. After seeing a lovely clip from Le grand restaurant, I decided to re-visit the comedy, but unfortunately, this clip was the best - and only - funny scene there. 2/10.
🍿
There's diminishing returns with watching too many of Hong Sang-soo's naval-gazing art films. The early (2008) Like you know it all is my 11th, and my least-favorite film by him. Mostly because the protagonist, who stands in for for the director himself, is a young, unpleasant cad, a small-time film director adored by small groups of film students, who floats from one situation to another, and always ends up sleeping with his friends wives. The constant smoking, so much smoking, and getting drunk, doesn't help. 3/10.
🍿
One Cut of the Dead, my 9th 'One shot movie' (*), or as the Japanese director calls it 'One Katto!". A strange independent Zombie comedy, made for $25,000, which ended up making box office history by earning over a thousand times its budget. The first act was actually the only one done without a cut (Like Bi Gun's ‘Long day’s journey into night’!), and the 3rd act was a recreation of that shot, a-la-Truffaut's 'La Nuit américaine'. Funny and inventive. 6/10.
(*) After ‘Rope’, ‘Russian arc’, ‘Lost in London’, ‘Birdman’, ‘1917′, ‘Boiling Point’, 'Victoria' and ‘Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes’.
🍿
4 Shorts, two of which were Oscar-nominated in 2016:
🍿 The winner, Sing, is an Hungarian story of a 10-year-old girl in 1990 Budapest, who joins the school choir at her new school. 10/10 - The sweetest film of the week!
🍿 Joe’s violin was a simple, emotional documentary about an old holocaust survivor who donates his 70-year old violin to a school program, where it ends with a 12-year-old Bronx girl.
/ Female /
🍿 ...And Dimensions of dialogue, my second by surrealist Czech crazy man Jan Švankmajer (After 'Alice'). One of Terry Gilliam's best animated movies of all time, a disturbing 1983 claymation nightmare, comprising of 3 short scenarios, including THIS disgusting parable.
🍿 Tender Game, my first independent animation by blacklisted, 3-times Oscar-winners John and Faith Hubley. (He led the Disney's animator strike of 1941 and was denounced by the HUAC). A lovely 1958 short with music by Ella Fitzgerald and Oscar Peterson.
🍿
The Sweet Hereafter, my first by Atom Egoyan. A tragic story full of pains; a bus accident that kills score of kids in a small Canadian town, and tears the community apart, a father who can't help his drug-addicted daughter, another father who sexually abuses his daughter. Also, an ambulance-chasing lawyer as the main character. Too much suffering for me. 5/10.
🍿
2 Judd Apatow productions:
🍿 Honestly, I was bored with the more serious fair, and had to fall back on the old favorite, Superbad. The raunchy humor tries to cover the tender love story between Seth and Evan. The wild and crazy shenanigans by the police duo provided the least authentic action and took away from the core of the story. But it was McLovin's adventures that made the movie what it became. And Emma Stone's Jules.
"These eyes are crying ... for you..."
🍿 Pee-wee's Big Holiday, his 3rd adventure story, was similar to his initial 'Big Adventure' from 30 years earlier, but lighter and less original. His infantile, a-sexual PG-man-child personality, mixed with the 1950's small town innocence, but added to an explicit bromance with the motorbike hunk. With Tom Smykowski as Diner Dan, and one good joke of playing the balloon. 4/10.
"Would you like to say a few words, Pee Wee?...
Mmm sure… Encyclopaedia, pimple and eh, hairball. Amen!"
🍿 Also, a public Service announcement from Steve Martin and Paul Reubens: "Plutonium is the main ingredient in Atom Bombs. Keep it down Behind the counter - away from terrorists".
RIP, Paul Reubens!
🍿
So bad I couldn't finish it: The new, bland 'satire' Corner office. Jon Hamm should have been a mega-star after 'Mad Men', but he's been picking his projects very poorly. Set in an artificial, sterile 'Severance' world, it's a tiring, boring parable of something, but I'm not sure what.
🍿
Throw-back to the "Art project”:
Superbad Adora.
🍿
(My complete movie list is here)

Historic Harley-Davidson Anniversary Celebrated In Budapest, Hungary
The Harley-Davidson® 120th Anniversary Festival has taken place over four days, from June 22-25, at the iconic Puskás Aréna Park in Budapest – Hungary’s national football ground and major event venue. The festival took over the park with a wide range of attractions and activities, including an indoor showcase of Harley-Davidson motorcycles old and new, celebrating some of the iconic brand’s greatest creations. Headlining the Harley-Davidson Expo was an exclusive European first viewing of the all-new 2023 CVO motorcycles, the CVO Road Glide and CVO Street Glide, globally revealed just two weeks before the festival began. Motorcyclists were also given the opportunity to test ride more than 70 Harley-Davidson motorcycles on the streets of Budapest – and beyond. And a tailored two-hour Pan America on-road and off-road demo experience, designed to fully test the capabilities of the adventure touring motorcycle, was also available. Riders and fans of Harley-Davidson made their way to Budapest from across the globe, travelling across Europe but also from the USA, Australia, South Africa and Singapore. Visitors were also treated to free tours of up to 300km, hosted by local experts, taking them far beyond Budapest to some of northern Hungary’s most scenic locations. One of the highlights for both visitors and locals was an extensive entertainment schedule, which included more than 50 bands across five stages. International acts such as Airbourne and Wolfmother from Australia, Larkin Poe from USA, fan favourite The Picture Books from Germany, and UK rock band The Darkness took to the arena stages, with Glenn Hughes Performing Classic Deep Purple bringing the show to a close on Sunday night. A clear Hungarian flavour was also added to the entertainment line-up with iconic bands such as EDDA Művek and Pokolgép also headlining. VIPs in attendance included Jochen Zeitz, Chairman, President and CEO of Harley-Davidson, overseeing a prize draw alongside Karen Davidson and Bill Davidson, 4thgeneration grandchildren of company co-founder William A. Davidson. A limited edition 120th Anniversary Harley-Davidson Heritage Classic was awarded to a UK winner. As well as a wide variety of creative custom motorcycles on show in various locations around the festival, Friday saw a customer ride-in Custom Bike Show, supported by Metzeler tyres, and featuring more than 80 bikes, brought especially to Budapest to compete, from eight different countries. The ultimate winner was Marco Sonnino from Italy. The company was also delighted to announce the location for next year’s 30th edition H.O.G. Rally, a free event open to all riders, which will take place in Senigallia, Italy from June 6-9, 2024. The outstanding location is less than two hours from Bologna and features iconic renaissance architecture, a stunning coastline and is surrounded by rolling hills and winding roads, making it a perfect location to plan a tour to in 2024. Kolja Rebstock, Regional Vice-President for Europe, Middle East and Africa said: “This was a truly incredible festival which epitomised Harley-Davidson as a truly magnetic brand and lifestyle that reaches far beyond motorcycles. On behalf of Harley-Davidson EMEA, I would like to thank the event organisers ‘SportMarketing Agency Kft’, the city of Budapest and of course the people of Hungary for embracing the festival’s combination of motorcycle, music and entertainment by making riders from all over the world welcome. We will head to Austria for our next large scale event on 5-10th September to welcome riders in celebrating 25 years of European Bike Week.” For more Harley-Davidson UK news check out our dedicated page Harley-Davidson UK News or head to the official Harley-Davidson UK website www.harley-davidson.com/gb/en/index.html Read the full article

☆ ALICIA’S MONTHLY MEDIA MENTIONS: NOVEMBER `22
it's mid-December. school is eating me alive. but here are my media faves of November.
Visual:
Howl's Moving Castle (2004) dir. Hayao Miyazaki - I was never a Ghibli kid growing up, and I think part of the reason why is that I was not exposed to it when I was younger. But holy shit was I missing out. I loved the story, the animation was gorgeous. It has further cemented this desire to pursue a career in filmmaking.
Class Action Park (2020) dir. Seth Porges & Chris Charles Scott - So, this is a documentary about Action Park, a New Jersey water park from the 70s and the crazy fucking way it operated. I'd recommend watching it, just because it's absolutely wild seeing the different attractions they had and just how dangerous they were. But just a heads up that it swings between nostalgic past employers/customers to families who have been victimized by the owner who prioritizes capital gain over human life.
Extracurricular (2020) dir. Kim Jinmin - I don't watch too many k-dramas, because I feel like most of them have an unnecessary romance going on that I just don't want to see lol. This is no exception, but the plot is interesting. It's about a couple of high schoolers and how they get involved in a prostitution ring. It gets you asking some moral questions; it's one of those dramas you'd like to debate with someone over. Justice for Seo Minhee.
She Loves Me (film) dir. David Horn, Scott Ellis (staging) - For a school assignment, I'm making a theatre poster for the play Parfumerie, a Hungarian play written by Miklós László, set in a 1930s perfume shop, and watching She Loves Me was part of my research of the play. It's a sweet, romantic story between two coworkers who have unknowingly been exchanging letters with each other. For the trope fanatics, it's an enemies-to-lovers story. I wouldn't say the songs are quite memorable compared to other musicals I've watched, but it would be something fun to see as the holidays approach.
Fire of Love (2022) dir. Sara Dosa - This is a documentary about two French volcanologists, Maurice and Katia Krafft, and the exciting lives they led studying, filming, and photographing volcanoes. I watched this on a really cold day at the Hot Docs theatre in Toronto. I feel like I went in expecting a romantic movie about the pair, but it didn't quite feel that way. It focused more on their lives and the crazy expeditions they took to study volcanoes. If anyone has watched Guillermo Del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities, the final episode, The Murmuring dir. Jennifer Kent, feels similar.
Atlanta, S4 EP8: The Goof Who Sat by the Door (2022) - My awesome roommate got me into watching Atlanta. So within a month or so, I had binged all four seasons. If you're unfamiliar with the show, it can only really be described as afro-surrealism - it follows its main cast through their ventures in Atlanta and navigating the music industry, and has the occasional off-plot single episode. And it's created by Donald Glover - so you know it's good. This episode is one of those off-plot ones and it's a mockumentary of the career of Thomas Washington, the first black animator and CEO of Disney. I went in thinking this was real LMFAO. But if you go in with that mindset, it's such an impactful episode. Any exaggeration or irony flies right past you and you just see the story and how amazing it is.
Music: November 2022 Spotify Playlist
SMITHEREENS (2022) - Joji - Ugh. What can I say? It's so good. that good Joji sadness we all love to cry to. A few faves include Glimpse of Us, Die For You, YUKON (INTERLUDE), and 1AM FREESTYLE.
'The ReVe Festival 2022 - Birthday' - Red Velvet - I'm always excited for a Red Velvet comeback. I think the album is solid, but by far my favourite track is Celebrate. I listened to this album for the first time with my roommate, and it just so happens that both our birthdays are coming soon. (We're born three days apart!)
Books:
These are all books I'm in the midst of reading.
Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones - I decided to read this solely because I couldn't get enough of the film and decided to read the book as well.
Steal Like An Artist by Austin Kleon - I'm still in the middle of it, but I'd recommend this to fellow artists! An insightful, useful guide to making your way in the art world.
