What 70 years of AI on film can tell us about the human relationship with artificial intelligence

In 2024, AI is making headlines daily. We may be aware of the science, but how do we imagine AI and our relationship to it both now and in the future? Fortunately, film may provide us with some insights.
Probably the best-known AI in film is HAL 9000 from Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968). HAL is an artificially intelligent computer housed on board a spacecraft capable of interstellar travel. The film was released less than a year before humans landed on the moon. And yet, even in this optimism about a new era of space travel, HAL’s portrayal sounded a note of caution about artificial intelligence. His motivations are ambiguous, and he shows himself capable of turning against his human crew.
This 1960s classic demonstrates fears that are common throughout AI film history – that AIs cannot be trusted, that they will rebel against their human creators, and seek to overpower or overthrow us.
These fears are contextualised in different ways during different historical eras – in the 1950s they are associated with the cold war followed by the space race in the 1960s and 1970s. Then in the 1980s it was videogaming, and in the 1990s the internet. Despite these differing preoccupations, fear of AI remains remarkably consistent.
My latest research, which forms the backbone of my new book AI in the Movies, explores how “strong” or “human-level” AI is depicted in film. I examined more than 50 films to see how they shed light on human attitudes to AI – how we interpret it and understand it through characters and stories, and how attitudes have changed since AI’s beginnings.

Types of AIs
The idea of AI was born in 1956 at an American summer research project workshop at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, where a group of academics gathered to brainstorm ideas around “thinking machines”.
A mathematician called John McCarthy coined the name “artificial intelligence” and just as soon as the new scientific field had a name, filmmakers were already imagining a human-like AI and what our relationship with it might be. In the same year an AI, Robby the Robot, appeared in the film Forbidden Planet, and returned the following year in 1957 in the film The Invisible Boy to defeat another type of AI, this time an evil supercomputer.
The AI as malevolent computer appeared again in 1965 as Alpha 60, in the chilling dystopia of Jean-Luc Godard’s Alphaville, and then in 1968 with Kubrick’s memorable HAL in 2001: A Space Odyssey.

These early AI films set the template for what was to follow. There were AIs that had robot bodies and later robot bodies that looked human – the first of these appearing in Westworld in 1973, where a robot malfunction at a futuristic amusement park for adults creates chaos and terror. Then there were AIs that were digital like the evil Joshua in the 1977 horror Demon Seed, where a woman is impregnated by a supercomputer.
In the 1980s, digital AIs started to become connected to network computing – where computers “talked�� to one another in an early incarnation of what would become the internet – like the one stumbled upon by Matthew Broderick’s high-school student in War Games (1983), who almost accidentally starts a nuclear conflict.
From the 1990s, an AI could move between digital and material realms. In Japanese animation Ghost in the Shell (1995), the Puppet Master exists in the ebb and flow of the internet, but can inhabit “shell” bodies. Agent Smith in The Matrix Revolutions (2003), takes over a human body and materialises in the real world. In Her (2013), the AI operating system Samantha eventually moves beyond matter, beyond the “stuff” of human existence, becoming a post-material being.

Mirrors, doubles and hybrids
In the first few decades of AI film, AI characters mirrored the human characters. In Collosus: The Forbin Project (1970), the AI supercomputer reflects and amplifies the inventor’s own arrogant overreaching ambition. In Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991), Sarah Connor has become like the AI Skynet’s Terminators herself: her strength is her armour and she hunts to kill.
By the 2000s, human-AI doubles began to overlap and merge into each other. In Spielberg’s AI: Artificial Intelligence (2001), the AI “son” David looks just like a real boy, whereas the real son Martin comes home from hospital connected to tubes and wires that make him look like a cyborg.
In Ex Machina (2014), the human Caleb tests the AI robot Ava, but ends up questioning his own humanness, examining his eyeball for digital traces and cutting his skin to ensure that he bleeds.
In the past 25 years of AI film, the borders between human and AI, digital and material have become porous, emphasising the fluid and hybrid nature of AI creations. And in the films In The Machine (2013), Transcendence (2014) and Chappie (2015), the boundary between human and AI is eroded almost to the point of non-existence. These films present scenarios of transhumanism – in which humans can evolve beyond their current physical and mental constraints by harnessing the power of artificial intelligence to upload the human mind.

Although these stories are imaginary and their characters fictional, they vividly depict our fascinations and fears. We are afraid of artificial intelligence and that fear never goes away in film, although it has been questioned more in recent decades, and more positive portrayals can be observed, such as the little trash-collecting robot in WALL-E. But mostly we are afraid that they will become too powerful, and will seek to become our masters. Or we fear they may hiding among us, and that we might not recognise them.
But at times, too, we feel sympathy towards them: AI characters in films can be pitiful figures who wish to be accepted by humans but never will be. We are also jealous of them – of their intellectual capacity, their physical robustness and the fact that they do not experience human death.
Surrounding this fear and envy is a fascination with AIs that is present throughout film history – we see ourselves in AI creations and project our emotions onto them. At times enemies of humans, at times uncanny mirrors, and sometimes even human-AI hybrids, the past 70 years of films about AI demonstrate the inextricably intertwined nature of human-AI relationships.

Now And Then
Headlines this morning are proclaiming that SAG-AFTRA (the screen actors guild) and Hollywood studios have reached a tentative agreement. That’s good for everyone, including fans, because it means that new content can be created for our viewing pleasure.
One of the major bones of contention in the strike was the possible use of AI not only to write scripts, but also be used to create audio and video in the likeness of stars. It is a very real possibility, and AI capabilities have advanced so much in recent months and years that it could happen, and completely without the permission of anyone being imitated.
But what if a project of this sort were actually initiated—and approved—by artists who tapped into AI capabilities to produce content of someone who is long deceased? That is precisely what Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr—the surviving members of the Beatles—did. Last week what is quite likely the last song ever by the Beatles to be released was unleashed to the world.
The song, Now And Then, was written by John Lennon, and had only been recorded as a crude demo on a cassette player in 1977. He had written it while living at the Dakota Hotel in NYC, and simply recorded it while at the piano. John’s wife, Yoko Ono, gave the cassette tape to Paul in 1994, but it could not be used in a subsequent effort at the time to produce a post-mortem anthology. The piano and vocal tracks could not be isolated.

Lennon was shot and killed in New York City on the evening of 8th December 1980. When that 90s project was underway, George Harrison was still alive. Alas, he died on 29th November 2001 of cancer. That left Paul and Ringo to do this project in the modern era.
And were it not for AI, this never would have happened. It should be noted that the new song is John’s real voice, not “AI John.” Artificial Intelligence was used to separate the original vocal from the piano, and then enhance Lennon’s vocals.
So while critics of AI need to mull that over and accept this was really a high-tech editing project, there remains the possibility that far more could be done. For example, I have extensive audio of my father telling stories while he was yet alive. Not only could I feed those into AI for enhancement, but I could tell the AI machine to create new audio content in the voice and style of my late father, using a script that I would feed it.
Now imagine a professor—someone, maybe me, maybe someone else—doing the same thing. It takes a long time to create long-form lecture audio files. Not just for the speaking part, but also for the multiple takes required when the prof stumbles or coughs. It’s one thing for this prof to do the audio recording of blogs like this every morning, because they are only five to seven minutes long. It is quite another when you’ve got thousands of words to speak.
For that matter, Voice Actors could be put out of business if we’re not careful. All those audio books on Audible could be created with the click of a few buttons, having uploaded a voice sample. And while we’re at it, why not audio text books? Sheesh. That’s an idea that should have been done years ago.
Meanwhile, I am loving the Beatles’ new song. I know. I am old like that. But in my defense, my two 20-something daughters love the Beatles, too. I credit that to good upbringing, and them growing up surrounded by 60s- and 70s-era music. You might call that punishment, but they rather like it.

Today I was researching Artists for my project and I stumbled across Alex Coville’s art.

I found this interesting as I’m basing my project around Ai, and how an artificial intelligence may assemble art. The idea that the artist was ahead of technology is a luxury we lack today. With technology very quickly catching up.

Mark Zuckerberg embraced a digital world known as the metaverse when he said in November 2021 that he was changing his company’s name from Facebook to Meta.
A month later, Bill Gates, a founder of Microsoft, wrote that within two or three years, he believed most virtual meetings would transition from two-dimensional grids of video “to the metaverse, a 3D space with digital avatars.”
Soon after, Microsoft announced that it would spend $70 billion to buy the video game giant Activision Blizzard and said the deal would “provide building blocks for the metaverse.”
But since then, interest in the metaverse has stalled. Technology investors have moved on to new trends like artificial intelligence. And some metaverse projects have been shuttered at companies like Disney and Microsoft, despite that burst of enthusiasm.

Enter Apple. At its Worldwide Developers Conference starting on Monday, the tech giant is expected to debut its virtual reality hardware product: high-tech goggles that blend together the digital and physical worlds.
The company is betting that it can tempt consumers with mixed reality products better than Meta, whose high-end Quest Pro headsets have not sold well, and that it can ignite mainstream interest in virtual reality in a way that other companies have not. The Apple headset is expected to cost about $3,000 and will look like ski goggles, according to current and former employees familiar with its development.
Apple has done this before. Eventual hits like the iPod, iPhone and Apple Watch started in niche markets that grew into big businesses. But even Apple executives have been skeptical about the company’s prospects in virtual reality, which, they say, may still not be ready for its mainstream moment.
What Is the Metaverse, and Why Does It Matter?

The origins. The word “metaverse” describes a fully realized digital world that exists beyond the one in which we live. It was coined by Neal Stephenson in his 1992 novel “Snow Crash,” and the concept was further explored by Ernest Cline in his novel “Ready Player One.”
An expanding universe. The metaverse appears to have gained momentum during the online-everything shift of the pandemic. The term today refers to a variety of experiences, environments and assets that exist in the virtual space.
Some examples. Video games in which players can build their own worlds have metaverse tendencies, as does most social media. If you own a non-fungible token, virtual-reality headset or some cryptocurrency, you’re also part of the metaversal experience.
How Big Tech is shifting. Facebook staked its claim to the metaverse last year, after shipping 10 million of its virtual-reality headsets and announcing it had renamed itself Meta. Google, Microsoft and Apple have all been working on metaverse-related technology.
The future. Many people in tech believe the metaverse will herald an era in which our virtual lives will play as important a role as our physical realities. Some experts warn that it could still turn out to be a fad or even dangerous.
Apple declined to comment.
The idea of an immersive, all-encompassing online universe made more sense to many investors when people weren’t leaving their homes during the height of the pandemic. Metaverse-related start-ups raised about $664 million in venture capital in the first five months of 2023, a drastic drop from the more than $2.93 billion they raised in the same period in 2022, according to data compiled by PitchBook. That drop-off cuts recent metaverse start-up investment to about a quarter of its peak in the first half of 2022, PitchBook said.

“The metaverse investment fad — it came and went, and now people are focused on A.I.,” said Doug Creutz, an analyst at Cowen & Company. “The people who were hopping on it because it was a sexy thing to talk about have hopped back off.”
This year, Microsoft shuttered a virtual reality world, called AltspaceVR, that it acquired in 2017. The company also laid off some employees working on its HoloLens mixed reality headset and eliminated or reassigned teams that had been working on metaverse projects, according to a person familiar with the changes.
In a statement, Microsoft said it was still committed to the metaverse and pointed to the news that it was rolling out three-dimensional avatars for Microsoft Teams meetings.
Disney also laid off about 50 employees who had been working on metaverse projects, according to a person familiar with the cuts. News about Microsoft’s and Disney’s cuts was reported earlier by The Wall Street Journal.

At Meta, Mr. Zuckerberg’s plan to restructure the company around metaverse-centric technologies has been costly. Meta’s hardware unit, Reality Labs, which includes its Oculus headsets, is responsible for a significant part of Meta’s recent big increase in spending. That division lost about $4 billion in the first three months of this year.

Mr. Zuckerberg cautioned that building the metaverse would be a money-losing proposition with little promise of early returns. Still, it has taken much longer than he anticipated. In recent months, Mr. Zuckerberg and his lieutenants have spent more time talking up Meta’s expertise in A.I., though he has bristled at the notion that the metaverse is no longer his focus.
“A narrative has developed that we’re somehow moving away from focusing on the metaverse vision,” he said in a call with investors in April. “So I just want to say upfront that that’s not accurate. We’ve been focusing on both A.I. and the metaverse for years now, and we will continue to focus on both.”

A Meta spokeswoman, Ashley Zandy, said: “We’ve always been clear that our metaverse vision is a long-term one, and nothing about that has changed. We are committed to our metaverse vision, and we’re seeing good momentum.”
On Thursday, Mr. Zuckerberg teased a version of the Meta Quest 3, the company’s latest VR headset, which will cost $499 and may come this year. Consumers have spent more than $1.5 billion on apps and games in Meta’s Quest app store to date.
For Apple, its new headset could be the beginning of a long-term plan that eventually leads to a more popular virtual reality product, like a lightweight pair of glasses.
Some analysts have suggested the company could take an experimental approach, gauging how early adopters use it and then making changes before marketing a future version to a broader audience. That would be similar to what it did with the Apple Watch. It was initially marketed as a general purpose companion to the iPhone but was later reframed as a fitness gadget.

Despite the decline in interest, many argue it’s far too soon to write off the idea of the metaverse. Companies that had been preaching the metaverse well before Meta popularized it, like Roblox and Epic Games, are still committed to their long-term visions.
Matthew Ball, a venture capitalist who has written a book about the metaverse, said the mainstream attention to the concept after Facebook changed its name had spurred outlandish predictions about how soon people would be spending their time in immersive online worlds.
“This was more about timeline mismanagement,” Mr. Ball said. “The intense focus on the metaverse within a short period of time, with some arguing it was here now or was about to be, was bound to disappoint many.”

Roblox, a platform with millions of games often aimed at children, had 66.1 million daily users in the first quarter of 2023, a 22 percent jump from a year earlier. Craig Donato, the company’s chief business officer, said that Roblox was working on expanding into other immersive online experiences, but that a full-fledged metaverse was still far away.
“We’re very much in the first or second inning,” Mr. Donato said.
In March, Epic Games released new tools designed to help Fortnite players create and make money from their own games on the company’s platform, spurring the creation of an online economy in Fortnite — a cornerstone of the vision of the metaverse preached by Tim Sweeney, the company’s chief executive. Mr. Sweeney said mainstream interest for the metaverse attracted people who weren’t really invested in the space.
“Unfortunately, a lot of people tried to attach themselves to that trend without really delivering the goods,” he said. “But if you look at the trend, it’s continuing to grow, and it continues to look like exponential growth.”

01 TRANSACTION

02 DATA TRANSFER
The data to be processed is uploaded to a encrypted area in a distributed file systems. As part of the transaction, the costs of storage are charged against the deposit. 03 A.I.PROCESSING

04 VALIDATE AND ADD

The data is verified with a parity verification node and encryption verification. The data is then stored in the distributed files system or returned to the customers data storage area.
05 COMPLETE
After the data has been validated, a transaction complete is sent to the main blockchain. The blockchain moves the payment in Genius tokens out of escrow ready to be distributed to the individual nodes that processed the data

Once the process is complete the blockchain contract then distributes 70% of the Genius tokens to all the individual nodes wallets. One of his works is Cutie Honey, which is about Honey Kisaragi, an android who can transform into different versions of herself, which the most iconic is Cutie Honey, a heroine with pink (or red) hair, who fights against the villains that threaten her or the world (in most versions, Panther Claw is responsible of everything that threates the world). In every version, she is desired because of her power, which it could be considered infinite, therefore, they can be used for rule the world, but due to having emotions and empathy, Honey decides to use this power for defend humanity. Due to its popularity, there have been some takes with the pass of time, which reinvent the concepts and the world where the characters live, at the same time, many of these reinventions are closely linked to the audience they focus on, because they had the resources to carry out these projects and they had the opportunity to do so. Also, in this post i wouldn't cover all Cutie Honey reinventions, because althought i'm familiar with the franchise, i haven't watch/read all of them.
At the time, Cutie Honey was planned to be a shojo manga, focusing on the characters' relationships and romance, and there wouldn't have much violence, but for reasons of television blocks' schedule and agreements with manga magazines, its demographics changed to shonen, therefore, they added more violence and nudity in her transformations for making more appealing to a young male audience, because in those times, it was interesting to see erotic content and scenes with sexual undertones, therefore, she would be considered the first "waifu" in the history of anime, due to her personality and her revealing design. Even so, Cutie Honey gained some popularity among the female audience, because Honey was the opposite of the stereotype of the japanese woman in the 70's, who were considered modest, delicate and shy, instead, Honey was a modern girl, strong but at the same time innocent, as she was also one of the first female protagonists in the shonen genre, therefore, Cutie Honey was a revolutionary product for the time, and at the same time, being a prototype of a Magical Girl. In this way, Cutie Honey became a female empowerment fantasy and the strong and sexy girl's male fantasy.

A good example of this were New Cutie Honey (1994) and Cutie Honey Flash (1997), which they were made in the same period. The first mentioned is 8 episodes OVA, where it occurs 20 years of the events of the manga/anime, where we see Honey that needs to remember who she was and for what she is fighting for, in a darker and more futuristic world, with similar Gotham City vibes, instead of a more colorful palette in the anime; and due to being an OVA instead of an anime, they took more freedom animating the transformation and fighting scenes, and why not, also the fanservice scenes; therefore, it appealed more to the male audience, introducing us to a more voluptuous Honey, with poses that left much to the imagination. While the latter, was more focused on a female audience, adding more romance and softening certain elements to make them more appealing. In this case, Honey is an actual girl rather than an android that looks like that. Also, this reinvention is closer to the idea of ​​the Magical Girl and the prototype idea that Go Nagai had at the time, along with a line of dolls. From this, it can be inferred with this duality, the girls relate to Honey, someone who can face the adversities of life, and who, at the same time, can be what they want to be; on the other hand, the boys want a girl like Honey, who is strong, beautiful and will always protect them.

In Re: Cutie Honey (2004), which are a 3 episode OVA, based on the live-action/tokusatsu movie of the same year, both directed by Hideki Anno, in this case, Honey has a more youthful and adorable attitude, contrasting with her normal life as a office worker, but still retaining the things that makes Cutie Honey as a franchise. This leads to problems in her private life, since she is seen as childish and useless, but at the same time, due to her lack of caution, she tends to cause destruction when she is fighting with the Panther Claw members, causing mistrust between the population. A character that I have to mention is this version of Natsuko Aki, which is the inspector who was taking the terrorism cases by Panther Claw and Cutie Honey in the OVA, and which, is the one who is best trained for this cases' style, therefore, when the police arrive, she (along with her companions) is the one in the center of the scene, while the rest is there, filling in the screen. Although both have similar goals, she is the opposite of Honey, since she is more serious and cautious on what she does, and also, she has a more modest design, but still looks imposing through her body language and the way she talks. When the plot progresses, both characters learn from their differences, where Honey learns to be more careful with the actions she does, while Natsuko learns to trust people. In case of the movie, Cutie Honey (2004), due to being a tokusatsu, it's filled with CGI, but some of the fighting scenes were made by frame by frame, also, the movie had some campy value due to the costumes that characters used, the color palette and the way special effects were used in the film. But to me, it felt like this would be the result afterwards, i mean, Cutie Honey is all pink and everything is over the top, right?

But, was there a reinvention that deviated a bit, i mean, a lot, from the standards we had for Cutie Honey at this time? Well, I would say yes, and one of them is Cutie Honey: Tears (2016) is a live-action movie where it occurs in cyberpunk dystopia; due to pollution problems and a virus, the society is controled through an Artificial intelligence based technology, in this way, the upper class oppresses the poor, through contamination that they produce, affecting their lives in a negative way. In this movie, Hitomi (yes, they changed her name) is a girl who is much more careful of her movements, because she is persecuted for her power and she is much more serious, helping people from the shadows, because she had to learn to hide herself rather to try to do something reckless. This movie doesn't have the fanservice scenes and the colorful palette that audience was used to look at. Also, maybe it's just me, but the movie focus on the backgrounds, making a good contrast between the dark and washed out palette in the low class live and the more light and more technological upper class.
In conclusion, it can be said that Cutie Honey, as a franchise, has had many reinventions, some of which take on a characteristic of the original work that could be better executed in a medium or to appeal to a specific audience, as they can also add concepts that can complement the franchise and in the process, they can create something new; because to me, it shows how the same thing is actually made in different periods of the history, where you can see changes on the techniques and plots; but after all, Cutie Honey appeals to the male audience by being the fantasy of the sexy woman in a tight outfit, and at the same time, appeals to the female audience by being the fantasy of female empowerment , where she can transform herself into whatever she wants without necessarily due to social acceptance, and it seems that these characteristics would still endures trought the time pass.
