Rico Nasty - Nasty (Review)

I think I’m reaching a point in life where the music I got used to listening to growing up is preventing me from enjoying the artists people are listening to these days. I can’t say I make time to really research underground artists like I used to because most of them really aren’t doing anything to offer anything different in hip-hop/rap.

You have your wave of drug rappers that seem to be gaining a lot of traction and simultaneously having nothing to provide to the scene, and then you have Rico Nasty, a Maryland-based rapper firing on all cylinders.

Active since 2014 and with 5 mixtapes under her belt prior to Nasty, Rico Nasty set off what I think is the breakthrough that she’s been looking for since she started making music.

What you get from Nasty is an instant understanding that you are not listening to what you thought you were. First impressions almost give you a feeling as if you’re listening to mixture of Lil Uzi Vert, 6ix9ne,  and the rest of the artists out right now that seemed to have take over everyone’s headphones. Mind you I’m not too crazy about anyone out right now so for her to approach this mixtape with this sound AND make me enjoy? That speaks volumes as to what she produced with this.

Clearly taking inspiration from the current rap scene along with the heavy influences of punk/rock, trap, pop, etc. this album serves as a fantastic foundation for the direction she could be heading in. The production was extremely unique and well thought out, each track...one after the other...leaving me completely engaged and wanting more.

The lyrics have a little to offer, but as I mentioned: what it lacks in terms of lyrics, it makes up for in just the fact that it’s just a unique and solid experience. You’ve heard half of this shit before...and yet it’s better than what you’re used to.

Features on this include BlockBoy JB and Lil Gnar (don’t know who he is, don’t care to find out) which means that the majority of this 14-track tape leaves much of the limelight for Rico Nasty, and she fucking did. It’s extremely refreshing to hear this sound from a black woman and not something I was anticipating when I threw my headphones on for the first time to listen to this thing.

Like I said...I’m not one to really get into the new music that has been releasing the last 2 years but I’m making an exception with this one. It’s new, it’s engaging, it gives you so much energy and it is genuinely such a ride throughout the entire thing. Make some time this week and give it a listen because I can tell you right now, after signing with Atlantic Record, Rico Nasty can only go up from here. Solid 8/10 for me, loved every minute of it and I can’t wait to see what she drops next.

10-12-20 ofc this post is about 6ix9ne. at first everyone was understanding of what he was doing. then the jokes were coming and were the same stale jokes, what was going on with all the protests, and you’re online STILL trolling talking about “I told, they’re mad. I like the police!!!!” like, it was just tone def, even towards other communities that are non black. it just seemed corny I don’t care how you spin it. 

he does a horrible job of making his points, the dissing Nicki in interviews. like, you should've been APPRECITATIVE that still an A list celebrity, and artist would still want to work with you?? you should've been grateful is my whole point. for him to throw shade I thought it was rude. and it showed how large his ego is. people bring in the example of meg and cardi being excited about their number 1, and how they con graduate one another. its mutual. 

the inappropriate and gross jokes about dead celebrities or dead rappers family/friends. its annoying. going to duck’s cousins grave site in Chicago was pathetic. all because durk called u out? like who cares make fun of him if u want but not his dead cousin. same with nipsey in LA. that was so tacky and nobody could defend or find that actually FUNNY BECAUSE IT WASNT. 

finally, he needs the industry. but he wants to call out the industry. it doesn't work that way sadly friend. and I wish he knew that. I agree that they've black balled him, and obviously not many rappers wanna work with him (A list artists- such as Nicki)
