Call me Cassandra….*

Having a history of offending members of the Charmie fanhood, many of whom will not even see this post since they blocked me, I will nonetheless state my bona fifes openly. I love Armie Hammer and I love Timothée Chalamet. Being older, more educated, and a practicing professional provides me with apparently annoyingly inconvenient insights when discussing the two men I love and the years since CMBYN changed so many lives. The upset in the fandom occasioned by Timmy’s liaison with the Jenner person compels me to express the following. Believe me, my goal is to soothe rather than irritate.

First and foremost, I have said before and repeat here that one of the worst failings we have made in viewing the Charmie myth is that we tend to conflate Armie and Timmy IRL with their characters in CMBYN, Oliver and Elio. Neither man is much like their movie role at all. Briefly, Elio is sensitive, highly educated and intelligent, as well as emotionally vulnerable. Timmy is, based upon his interviews, observed public behaviors, etc., probably none of these. He is, as he says, an engaging goofball. Often he misuses and/or mispronounces words and creates word salad answers to interviewer questions. He’s a player more than a mensch, and his ambition knows no bounds. Armie is more like Oliver than Timmy like Elio, but without the redeeming affection the movie version of Oliver brought to the mutual seduction. The Oliver of the book was far less open and affectionate than movie Oliver, but both men were emotionally insincere, dishonest, and manipulative. Oliver was having a summer fling before finishing his degree, marrying, and getting on with life in both book and movie. Even more publicly than Timmy, Armie is a player who admits to manipulating and using people as personal convenience items. It’s questionable whether he remembers anything 😉, let alone everything.

Similarly, we are willfully blind to the realities of the profession that introduced us to Armie and Timmy in the first place. Show biz is a relentlessly demanding and often cruel bit of work. Timmy was born into a theatrical family and groomed through auditions and training from an early age. Small wonder that virtually all of the directors he has worked with mention his drive and ambition to succeed. That desire rules Timmy’s life and he is not likely to squander his opportunities as Armie tragically and so unnecessarily did. There is a new article out that captures this essential characteristic, titled the making of a global superstar. Timmy is surrounded by a team that calculates every move the young man makes, scrupulously. For instance, while Armie has loudly proclaimed his heterosexuality, Timmy’s team has assiduously cultivated an aura of androgyny, assuring that both the gay and straight communities can identify with and thereby claim Timmy as one of their own. The revision of Lee in Bones and All from jock to bisexual predatory adventurer is a classic example. So, in short, almost anything in the public eye should be viewed through the lens of this effort to promote Timmy to the highest artistic and popular levels of his profession. Most of you will hate this, but Timmy’s utter and complete failure to utter one supportive word about Armie, once his role model and mentor, throughout the shitstorm that Armie’s professional and personal life became. Many no doubt wish and fervently hope that there is still a viable bond between these men, but if there is, it requires a very steep price from one of them.

Before I go, one little observation that I hope will bring some solace regarding the PDAs seen at the Beyoncé concert. Kissing is an expression of intimacy that is usually accompanied by intense mutual gaze. Both participants in these lip locks looked directly toward the camera the second the kiss ended, not at each other. Telling…,

This Town -- Kygo, Sasha Alex Sloan

I don't even know when or why I came across this song the first time, but I don't remember it existing in my head before CMBYN. I wrote my entire french Oliver fic with this line alone :

I want an ocean view, somewhere

Some other lines are more literal, some less but even if it's not textbook Elio and Oliver, it's their song in my head. Or more accurately (and it's the first time i verbalize this thought), it's the song of book!Elio and book!Oliver, who are the closest to my heart.

All Melody -- Nils Frahm

I've probably said it before, but during the mourning period of 6 months following my first watch of the movie, I've listened a lot to the All Melody Album by Nils Frahm. Since I couldn't listened to many songs (anything about love, lost and many things), non-lyrical songs were a safe and good place to heal.

Je me dis que toi aussi -- Boulevard des Airs

It's french but believe me when I say the lyrics are quite literal this time. My favorite line of the song is the one I think fit the most to Elio and Oliver and it's: "Comment fait-on pour s'éloigner de soi ?" which can translate to something like "how can you move away from yourself?" or something like that. I like the sound of "s'éloigner" more than "move away".

All my Friends -- Seth XVI

In a parallel universe, I wrote an anachronistic fic (since it's not a 80s song) in which Elio goes dance to Le Danzing to this song on its own either the same summer after Oliver left or the next summer. It's a bittersweet story when Elio uses the song to make the transition between a sadness beyond reason and a resolute decision to be happy in his life.

The fifth is less obvious... I have an instrumental song called "End of August"

Touch You Where You’re Hardest by writemeatattoo / @694699 (E, 6K) This was such a surprise to find… beautiful writing, super sexy, a perfect back and forth internal monologue of that moment you tip over the edge from friends to lovers. Highly recommend savoring the sentences.

Danger I Can’t Hide by CelticSky (E, 227K) This one’s got all the tension and drama you’d expect of a World War II story—life and death high stakes, friends and lovers unexpectedly torn apart, battles and heroism, plus the added stakes of classism and homophobia—then add a slow burn, high risk, scorching love affair spanning years. If you want a story that’s complex and fantastically researched, plus lovers to root for, read it. It’s long. But I couldn’t put it down.

Faking It by TheCellarDoor (M, 46K)This one is so sweet. I loved Harry's internal monologue... his insecurities and thoughts that he'd made Louis uncomfortable because he liked, him made me cry. Louis is so soft and supportive. It’s just a lovely fic.

Our Lives, Non Fiction by @indiaalphawhiskey (E, 114K) this is, quite literally, the best fic I’ve read in years. It’s so well written, clever, funny, emotional, and sexy. Its draw you in immediately and you’ll end up falling in love with these characters before you know it. Don’t miss this one.

Pull Me Under by zarah5 (E, 140K) One of the very first fics I read when I came into this fandom…and I’ve read it multiple times since. Zarah’s fics hold up every time. This one has it all, great pacing, ot5 friendship, banter, super sexy smut, etc etc. Plus, Louis being super jealous of Harry’s best friend. Zarah writes really terrific internal monologue and her fics are all so good. I'd definitely check her entire catalogue. Link is to a download.

Things Unsaid by LadyLondonderry / @londonfoginacup (GA, 4K) This is so sweet and cute, I actually laughed out loud a couple of times. Louis’ internal monologue is neurotic and funny and this is such a fun twist on soulmates.

boy with kaleidoscope eyes by docklands / @hershelsue (E, 8K) This was just lovely. There was so much tender sweetness in the way they treated each other and I loved that even though it was just in Louis’ POV, we still got a very clear picture of how Harry felt. Honestly Louis in this fic is just sweetest thing ever. Harry should marry that boy.

don't have to go to the pool by kingsoftheimpossible (E, 12K) I just loved this one. This author captures the overwhelm and insecurity and desperation of a high school crush so well. Plus, the shaving scene is ridiculously sexy.

For Reasons Wretched and Divine by @indiaalphawhiskey (E, 95K) Really well written, angsty, emotional fic. I love this author’s ability to draw you in so deeply (and the smut is excellent).

all my love was down in a frozen ground by navigator (E, 16K) This is an old one that I didn’t have bookmarked for some reason. But it’s a favorite and I love everything this author wrote. This is one of those quiet, soft fics with a bit of angst and a lot of internal monologue and gentle conversations. I don’t know, there’s something so touching about it.

A Slow and Steady Rush by godots (E, 12K) I really enjoyed how this one was almost all internal monologue and how the slow build up led to a sweet and awkward first time for them. Just really nicely written.

My Lights Stay Up, But Your City Sleeps by PearlyDewdrops (E, 108K) Featuring lots of pining, really well done internal monologue from Louis, and excellent smut. It also has some really lovely writing that I felt captured the pain of mental illness/anxiety very well.

Could you love me anyway by @sadaveniren (E, 13K) I particularly like the way this fic handles both kink exploration and Harry’s internal monologue of negative self talk – both felt really well realized and realistic.

to hell with romancing by @bottomlinsons (E, 8K) This is worth reading for Harry’s internal monologue alone. This is just a funny fic that morphs into a sweet and really sexy one. Link is to a download.

Laundry Room by beautlouis (E, 10K) I always love an unusual meet-cute, especially when it’s combined with a quirky internal monologue, banter, and super hot smut. This one has it all.

use somebody by istajmaal (E, 5K) One of the things I love about fics from Nick’s POV is that he’s very much an insider, but he’s also very much outside the bubble of LouisandHarry. But here he’s been invited in. Sort of. I just love everything about how he and Louis bicker, Nick’s internal monologue, the set up. It’s all really well done.

Right Side of the Wrong Bed by eyesofshinigami (E, 11K) Louis’ internal monologue makes this one so quirky and fun. It’s just a lighthearted meet cute with a dash of some good smut

Acting vs impersonating

Is it just me or is there a trend toward rewarding actors who portray actual persons as opposed to fictional creations. Daniel Day Lewis as Lincoln, Rami Malek as Freddy Mercury, Eddie Redmayne as Stephen Hawking, Gary Oldham as Churchill, and this year Austin Butler as Elvis Presley. I find myself wondering if doing a spot on imitation of someone the public has seen and heard on countless movies or videos is the same thing as creating a character no one knew before in a credible, compellingly believable performance. Looks like Butler has the inside track to carry home yet another award for a wonderful impression of Elvis, which he apparently has a hard time leaving behind when he begins to speak.

Speaking just for myself, I feel that providing a faithful imitation is less about art than taking a character that lived only on a page into a living reality for an audience. What do you think?

I’m curious about your impression of the very last scene in Bones and All, Lee and Maren sitting together out in the grass. I wish that it meant that Lee somehow survived his wound.

Good question, good question. Thank you for asking it in my inbox 🙏

My first — and main — thought is that this last scene is more about some edit/4th wall thing that about the storytelling itself. My idea is that, as filmmaker, you must think about your last frame as much as you think about your first. Probably even more about your last, because it’s the thing your audience leaves with at the end.

So my guess is that they wanted Bones and All to end with a more tender note than Maren eating Lee on the floor, because that what they wanted their movie to be about — their love, the nature, and the beautiful colors of the American sky.

That being said, there’s more to say about it if I try to think more deeply.

For me, seeing Maren eating Lee and seeing them hugging naked in a field is the same scene told two different ways, speaking to two different sensibilities. I’ve completely agree with @694699 when she linked the eating part to the cmbyn quote saying something like "I believe every cell of your body should live and die inside my body" or something like that. For me, Lee asking to be eaten by Maren and Maren eating him is all about that. About Lee continuing to live in some way through Maren and her love (bitting my tongue so hard) for Lee keeping him alive inside her. Until she dies as well. I don’t know if the scene is the same in the book and written to encourage that kind of interpretation or if it’s a conscious or an unconscious move from the movie writer or if it’s a simple coincidence but it’s a link that can be easily drawn in my opinion.

So when we see her wrapped around Lee in the last scene, we see an illustration of that feeling as well. So for me it doesn’t mean that Lee survives. Not in a literal way, at least.
