All checked in and are going to hit a couple places for some drinks and food before we drive through Arches National Park (at sunset!). Before I left Denver this morning, the very nice bartender warned me about the Utah alcohol laws. So, I did a little research on the way here, and yikes. Here are a few of the more interesting ones (all from The Salt Lake Tribune):

1. Liquor stores are the only places consumers can buy vodka, whiskey, rum and other distilled spirits. They also are the only places to buy wine or beer that is higher than 5% ABV.

2. Utahns pay a lot for the alcohol they buy in state-run stores. Spirits and wine are marked up 88% on the wholesale cost, while heavy beer is marked up 66.5%.

3. At a restaurant, guests are required to order food with their alcoholic beverages — even if they are sitting at the bar. There is no requirement on how much food a patron must order — so the chips and salsa appetizer is usually enough to satisfy the law.

4. How can you tell the difference between a restaurant and a bar in Utah? Look for the quirky sign that says “This is a bar” and “No one under 21 is allowed.” These signs, under state law, must be at least 8.5 inches long and 11 inches wide and be posted in a conspicuous place at the entrance. The signs became mandatory as part of a massive liquor-reform law passed in 2017 and have been an annoyance for owners, confusing to diners and the butt of jokes on social media. But when you see one, you know that you can get a drink — without having to also order food like the restaurant requirement mentioned above.

5. In Utah, cocktails can contain no more than 1.5 ounces of primary liquor. However, bartenders can add secondary alcohols and flavored liqueurs to cocktails, as long as the beverage doesn’t exceed a total of 2.5 ounces of spirits. (And FYI — they have to hook their bottles up to an electronic measurer, to make sure they don’t over pour.)

The fungus among us

You know you're getting too predictable when your wife walks in the house and says, "I just saw your next blog."

OK. I'm intrigued.

She leads me down our driveway, past the creek. where the trees are just starting to display intimations of fall.

"Look to your left," she says. And there, lying on the ground about 20 yards into the woods, is a glowing white pod that looks like it could open at any moment to release an alien life form.

But in fact it's a fungus - a giant puffball mushroom.

I went on the Internet and learned that the largest puffball ever recorded, according to Guinness Word Records, turned up in West Yorkshire, U.K. It measured 66.5 inches (in circumference, I presume, although that was unclear).

Technically they're edible. But only technically. A few years go, out of plain curiosity, I sliced one up and fried it. Take my word for it: It was no morel.
