not that anyone asked but he’s my rant about the episode because it’s been a few days and i get more and more upset the more i think about it.
i’ve seen a lot of people complain about how brad and matthew got too much screen time. i agree to an extent. i think we should be focused on eddie and chris as that’s the biggest storyline but i also think focusing on brad is important depending on what happens this week.
in season 5, we got a lot of screen time with jonah. why? because he was important! imagine if they didn’t set all of that up and it came out of nowhere— that’s shitty storytelling. they have to focus on brad right now if what’s coming has to do with him.
now matthew. . . *angry shakes* what? so you’re telling me you’re going to introduce a new character— a probie— have athena be completely against the idea/him, make him bad, and then have her change her mind and ask for one? why not just give her *that* guy? it feels like a complete waste of a character! i think it would’ve been so much more fun if we got to see him be all power hungry and then be taken down a notch and have athena take him under her wing rather than waste him like that! what was the pooooint? it felt like backtracking.
the lightning strike callback. i wasn’t expecting them to do anything with it considering all they did for the well was have bobby make a joke abt eddie not being able to fit this time. i wasn’t expecting anything so i don’t really care but at the same time, you have these callbacks and you’re not going to anything with them? literally one line from any of the 118 would’ve made a huge difference! you had the well, then the lightning strike, and the guy with the rebar stuck in his head! HELLO!!! give me anyyyything!
my pros; ryan talked about eddie being “childlike”- oh i can see it! him goofing off with buck and his phone (buck asking bobby for help like a little kid hehe), eddie jumping over the couch when buck says it’s time for lunch, eddie filming bobby and brad at the end. then we got that scene of athena and hen!!!! i’ve missed their talks so much UGHHH I WAS SO HAPPY!! buck being in a baking frenzy to cope with his heartbreak and maddie and chimney handing jee over to him— buck finding out about them being pregnant?! looooved that!!!! i loved how much bobby was such a dad in this episode like again, with buck and the phone, and then again with the waitress. i loved that we got to see the characters we didn’t get in episode 6 since that was so focused on buck and eddie with a little sprinkle of madney.
i’m not very good at saying i don’t like something when i’m a fan of it. i feel like i’d be called a fake fan or whatever but i’m trying to get better at it. i love 9-1-1. i love all the characters (i do have a favorite though) and i get so happy when i see them because ***UGHHH*** i loooove them! it makes me so sad when they’re not being used to their full potential and being cast aside when their stories are impoooortant! this episode was very meh to me.
i was talking to my mom about my disappointment and she said it’s because i went into it expecting too much. not at all! i wasn’t expecting anything from the episode but i also wasn’t expecting nothing.

this episode really burnt any last hope i had of buddie actually becoming canon
i just knew they were gonna force bucktommy and then have eddie just be ‘supportive best friend’ but now that it’s actually out there i’m so disappointed
just completely ignoring the past 6 years of buildup between buck and eddie
anyway ig it was fun while it lasted
I wouldn’t lose hope AT ALL
Like yeah they’re pushing buck and Tommy and Eddie and Marisol a little bit but there are SO MANY things that warrant buddie optimism:
• the fact that they gave us bi buck in the first place
• THE INTERVIEWS bro I only saw snippets so far of the newest because travelling and yada yada but in one when asked about Tommy and buck, lou flat out said we should be happy abt bucktommy and that it can be a trial run to work out the kinks if buddie were to go canon and also Ryan saying that as far as Eddie’s sexuality goes, Eddie is very catholic and grew up a certain way but is learning he can explore a little more (aka unlearning comphet🫡) and something about how there is/will be the amount of queer rep expected in a Ryan Murphy/tim minear show (a lot) - I love Ryan sm cos he FEEDS us
• they saw ratings stay HIGH (I think they rose even??) with the Tommy and buck kiss so now all the issues Tim described as being factors to consider when deciding whether to make buddie canon are now non issues- actors= on board, Network and higher ups= love queer rep, Ratings = staying high (and I think rose from the kiss but i don’t wanna misinform)
• Eddie’s whole storyline this episode is just confirming the existence of his catholic guilt, like it’s the most ridiculous stupid storyline they could’ve chose but maybe this was its purpose cos that’s the only thing that makes sense to me
• the parallels and POINTED lines this season are off the charts- as a general rule in film EVERYTHING IS INTENTIONAL think checkovs gun type thing SO MANY LINES just have to mean something
• it seems the leaked script was legit and the fact they scrapped the “brother” line is VERY telling, this means either the script was a draft and they didn’t like it and it didn’t feel right orrr that they edited the line out in post production which could be recent and could mean they waited to see the ratings for the bucktommy kiss before either confirming buddie platonic to please whatever homophobes that popped up or to roll with buddie and not confirm or deny yet
•also we knew Tommy is here briefly
Look maybe I am just delusional and enjoying it but seriously I do NOT think anyone should lose hope at all
Love ya guys and stay delulu comrades🤝🫡🫡

You seem to know quite a bit abt venom and I don’t rly know who else to ask so…..I’ve been wanting to pick up reading the comics but I’m not rly sure where to start so I was wondering if you have any thoughts on where to begin/ what I should read first thanks!!
I have lots of thoughts!!! This is long and im sorry.
Fair Warning: If you are looking for the movie storylines, you will not find them. The movie storylines, to my understanding, are an amalgamation of different arcs from the comics. The recent movies are not comic-compliant for their origin stories meaning the other content isnt going to line up w comic-canon perfectly ( I can talk more about this if anyone is curious!)
Short answer 1: there is no good place to start just pick up a Volume 1 from any author and go at it.
Short Answer 2: Mike Costa's 2016 run. Volume #1: Homecoming (leads into the most recent run by Cates and Stegman and you can work backward after you catch up)
Long Answer:
It depends on how much back story you want and what stories youre looking for. Venom goes through many different iterations and hosts over the years so theres a few different places you could start based on ur personal story tastes and what you want out of the comics. Im going to outline the general runs from newest to oldest.
Keep in mind i havent read all of the comics yet so im going off of what i know and my own experiences working through the comics.
Note: In general, you get more bang for your buck by buying Omnibuses, complete collections, collected editions, volumes, etc instead of individual issues. (I only buy back issues for collecting purpose or for ongoing series). You can also read them for free online if you dont like paying money for things (personally i like owning things but w/e)
Anyway:
If you want to really see the relationship between eddie and venom you can start w the Mike Costa run from 2016 or the Donny Cates run from 2018. I LOVE the donny cates run but theres some backstory and info you may miss if you dont have other knowledge of venom from previous comics. (Flash Thompson, Cletus Kassidy/Carnage info mainly) Most of it is easily google-able though and if youre jumping into later issues im guessing you dont care too much about spoilers so google away! I think the Cates and Stegman run of venom is so so good it adds some dark story elements and new layers to the character of Eddie (#11 and #12 will hurt you in a good way). It also adds some mythology and additional lore to the symbiote that i kinda love. This is also the most recent run and it ended earlier this year. The venom comics will begin a new run next month i believe but i have no idea how beginner friendly that will be.
The Costa run will require you to know a little about Flash Thompson, but again all easily google-able. As i mentioned above, this directly leads into the Cates run. The costa run starts as the transition between the symbiote being w Flash Thompson and going back to Eddie Brock through Lee Price and then the story follows Eddie.
Speaking of Flash Thompson, this is a good place to start if you want the full lead up to where the comics are now. Flash Thompson as Agent Venom comics are from the Rick Remender and Cullen Bunn runs, beginning in 2011. This was part of a Rebirth for the character and lasted for i believe 40-something issues. There are 3 large complete collections (2 for Remender and 1 for Bunn) or theres smaller collected volumes. (This leads into the Space Knight story line which will then put you at the Costa run.)
If you wanna start with Venom #1 in his solo comics, David Michelinie's 1993 Lethal Protector is the first issues of venom solo comics and i can outline where to go from there as these issues are usually collected in like limited runs with series titles (ex. Venom: The Madness, Venom: Seperation Anxiety, Venom: Carnage Unleashed etc.) instead of just having the volume numbers and it can get confusing v quickly. The Venomnibuses collect a lot of those early issues and story arcs along with some appearances in other characters' comics all in order. Theres 3 Venomnibuses currently that collect all the venom comics (plus bonus issues) up to 2003 i think? So that includes all the OG venom solo run from Michelinie and the Daniel Way runs and would set you up to start the Agent Venom story arc. Again this is pricey if your buying omnibuses but theyre also like 1000 pages and cheaper per issue in the long run.
If you want REAL OG venom and to start from the beginning, Marvel Comics has an Epic Collection for venom called Symbiosis that collects a good amount of venom appearances in the Amazing Spider-Man series before he got his own series, including Eddie's origin story. Although this collection does miss some crucial story points like #361-364 (i think) which is the first fight between carnage venom and spiderman and #375 which is the point where vemom/eddie go to San Francisco (also first canon appearance of Ann Weying) and is basically the launch point for the 1993 6 part Lethal Protector series (as mentioned above). Those missing issues i THINK are on a spiderman collected edition, you can also buy back issues online or just read them for free online if u feel the burning desire to read them.
I hope this is helpful lol.
Like i said, theres no qrong place to start it mainly just depends on how you wanna do it. Some people are purists and wanna start from the very beginning, others may just wanna dive in and work backwards (basically what i did, i started on either end eventually ill meet in the middle).
If you have any other questions im happy to help! If you want a more tailored suggestion for where to start let me know and ill do my best!!!
Happy reading!!
