May I have the courage
May I have the courage to live through all the things that my dance reveals to me. All the things I’ve pushed down inside that need to come up and out through me, so I can be an empty vessel of perfection, of love.
May I have the courage to get out of my way, to become all that I am, and to hook myself up with my deepest yearnings. To stand up for my truth. To break through my own walls of resistance.
May I have the courage to embrace my body while it’s still here. To express my heart. To allow it to be part of my body, part of my spontaneity, part of my expression.
May I have the courage to let my head go and trust that there is something guiding me. That there is some enormous amazing purpose to my existence. That I wasn’t thrown here as some accidental afterthought of some mean cowboy.
May I have the courage to stand with my own story, what ever it is and was. To know that I and only I have the power to erase it and to move beyond it confines, however good, or bad, or weird, or twisted, or wondrous they may have been. They were and I am.
May I have the courage to witness another, to encourage, to celebrate, to support, to catalyze their growth, to be committed to the poetry of their existence.
May I have the courage to be myself. To be real. And may I please have the courage to stand up for those who can not stand up for them selves. ”

Late #inktober #selflove #selfportrait I had my #5rythms class yesterday, I was nearly too sad to go! #dancing has been really important to my #healing though...any Texans if you're interested google 'Dancing Fire Lizards' to see the class, Lisa teaches in #houston & #austintx So Lisa took us through both the dance & a short writing/drawing exercise yesterday, to get us closer to ourselves & what we were dancing with. Lisa's classes in Houston are called 'Beneath Words', beautifully describing where the dance works, but often through exercises, prompts during the dance or our group sharing after class, I get words to work with too. (Yesterday I had "I choose" & "my body, not yours.") I believe in body-centred therapy very much, although in "The Body Keeps the Score" (2014), Dr Bessel van der Kolk says "...at this point in time we know very little about how [art, music & dance therapies] work or about specific aspects of traumatic stress they address..." He goes on to explain "one of the few systematic studies" that compared the therapeutic effects of nonverbal artistic expression to those of written expression. Three groups participated, the first was asked to disclose a traumatic incident through dance & then to write about their experiences, the second danced but did not write, & the third engaged in a routine exercise programme. All three reported feeling better after a few months of this, but only the dancing + writing group also showed objective improvement via better physical health & improved GPA. The study concluded: "the mere expression of the trauma is not sufficient. Health does appear to require translating experiences into language." Dr van der Kolk mentions, though, that we don't know "that language is essential to healing..." But that writing to yourself, not others, to "let your self know what you have been trying to avoid" is the right kind of writing. For me dancing has been about being at home inside my body & thawing the body that has been frozen in fear. I'm pretty lucky to have so many good resources :) #edrecovery #eatingdisorderrecovery #eatingdisorder #ptsd #therapy #art #dancing #bodypositive #writing #journal #mentalhealth (at Houston, Texas)

“In many shamanic societies, if you came to a medicine person complaining of being disheartened, dispirited, or depressed, they would ask one of four questions: "When did you stop dancing? When did you stop singing? When did you stop being enchanted by stories? When did you stop being comforted by the sweet territory of silence?” ― [Gabrielle Roth]

Matthew, mon professeur d’anglais pendant plusieurs années.
