Thank you NetGalley and Sourcebooks Fire for providing me access to an eARC of Vincent Tirado’s amazing book, Burn Down, Rise Up. All thoughts and opinions are my own. People are going missing and no one knows why. Sixteen year old Raquel finds herself caught in the trap of the deadly Echo Game when her mom mysteriously falls ill. This leads her to reunite with an old friend, Charlize whose cousin has gone missing. As the two team up to untangle the mystery of the Echo Game, they start to unravel some long-buried feelings they have for each other. Meanwhile, Raquel learns about the Bronx Burning for her history class and somehow this seems to be tied to the game. Will Raquel beat the Echo Game and save her mom? This book is wild. First of all, as someone who works with teens, I love books that highlight how resourceful teens are. These teen characters are inventive, funny, and so clever. I love Raquel and her attempts to be prepared for all scenarios while entering the Echo Game. The friendships in this book are fantastic and the romance is realistic for the dangerous circumstances at hand. And the horror? Amazing. The Echo Game and all that comes with it is tragic and terrifying. I think the history of the Bronx and Raquel’s love for her home add complexity to the Echo Game. I also enjoyed reading about Raquel taking both her parents’ religions into account when it comes to protecting herself from the Echo Game and learning more about her papi’s beliefs in Santeria and finding value in his beliefs that she hadn’t really considered before. I think sadness in scary stories always makes them more terrifying because the acknowledgement that characters have something to lose raises the stakes for readers and Tirado knocked this one out of the park. 5 out of 5 stars #books #5outof5stars #netgalley #burndownriseup #bookstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/CmCVi3uLf5f/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Book Review: The Liar’s Girl
The Liar’s Girl by Catherine Ryan Howard is a psychological thriller set in Dublin, where the truth comes out, but at whose cost?  Allison is going back to Dublin, reluctantly. She hasn’t been back there in ten years, not since her boyfriend was found guilty of being a serial killer; one of the victims having been her best friend. Now for some reason Will wants to try and convince Allison that…

Just finished watching Searching starring John Cho and Debra Messing.  The movie is about a father who is looking for clues to find his 16 year old daughter who has gone missing.  In the search, he finds out that he doesn’t know his daughter as well as he thought and as he uncovers more clues, the mystery continues to grow.
I was really blown away by this movie.  I would give this a 5 out of 5 stars.  John Cho was excellent and Debra Messing played her part well, also.  The movie really makes you stop and think about things, in my opinion.  There are two things you definitely take away from this movie:  Clues are right in front of you the whole time, you just have to choose to see them and you never know to what lengths people will go to help those they love.
If you decide to watch it (I think you should!), leave a comment here or go to our Facebook page and leave a comment on the post there and let us know what you thought of the movie.  Did you have it all figured out before the end of the movie?  Were you surprised at any of the things that happened?

I started and finished this book of poetry ("unwritten letters to you"-TB LaBerge) at 2am last night. This particular poem was by far my favorite. The author turns blood into ink and pain into stories in his writing and its the most beautiful thing. #foundhimontumblr #5outof5stars

Thank you @netgalley and @macmillanusa for giving me access to an eARC of Robin Gow’s A Million Quiet Revolutions in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own. A Million Quiet Revolutions by Robin Gow is a phenomenal coming of age novel in verse about two teenage trans boys who have been intertwined since childhood and have to part ways when Aaron moves due to a family emergency. Oliver and Aaron name themselves after Revolutionary War soldiers Oliver researched and believes were transgender men who were in love with each other. An important topic in this book is the fact that transgender people have always existed, they just haven’t always been acknowledged, and there have been different words to describe trans and queer experiences throughout time. There are serious topics discussed in this book. One of these topics is the difference between Oliver’s coming out story and Aaron’s coming out story. One family is more accepting while the other takes more time to become accepting. Another serious topic is the different experiences Aaron, a Puerto Rican Catholic gay trans teenage boy and Oliver, a Jewish trans teenage boy, have living in a small town. Other serious topics discussed include transphobia, sexual assault, racism, and more. At the beginning of the story, Oliver and Aaron’s point of views are very similar and become more different later on. I wonder if it was by design to show that they were intertwined when they lived in such close proximity, but when they are separated, they learn to flourish into their own people. Something else that I liked was the use of multimedia correspondence. It's one of the things I love about novels in verse: the room for creativity. Readers get the characters’ thoughts, texts, letters, and art which adds to readers’ understanding of the characters. 5 out of 5 stars. Thank you @netgalley and @tordotcompub for providing me access to this marvelous eARC! All thoughts and opinions are my own. Robin just wants this new job to go well so he can provide for his sister; he never expected to have his eyes opened to the world of magic in such a violent attack after work. Edwin just wanted to have a regular day at work but instead, he finds out that his colleague has gone missing and has been replaced by someone new (Robin). These two couldn’t be more different and yet they must figure out how to remove a curse from Robin and uncover a sinister plot that will impact all magicians. This book is all about the slow-burn. The romance between Robin and Edwin is not love at first sight by any stretch of the imagination. It’s more like annoyance-at-first-sight turns oh, there’s more to you than I thought. This book is also excellent in terms of its fantasy elements; the world-building is wonderful and done through Edwin’s attempts to riddle out magic and through Robin’s introduction to magic and magical society. Readers who love mysteries are sure to fall in love with A Marvellous Light. And readers who love humorous romances between people who yearn for each other will adore A Marvellous Light by Freya Marske. I cannot wait to see what happens next in this series! 5 out of 5 stars! A Marvellous Light by Freya Marske comes out November 2, 2021! (That’s tomorrow! Go get it!) #bookrecommendations #netgalley #tordotcompub #amarvellouslight #5outof5stars #5starreview #fantasybooks #fantasy #slowburn #romancebooks #novemberreads #annoyancestolovers #books #bookrecs #bookreview #bookstagrammers #bookstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/CVwU_U6LBkj/?utm_medium=tumblr

The Worst Best Man is one of the best books I’ve read all year. Mia Sosa writes a hilarious and moving rom-com-esque book filled with heart-to-hearts, confessions of love, the feeling of accidentally falling for the “worst” person possible, and strong family bonds. Summary This dual-point-of-view novel begins with Max waking up to a text from his uptight older brother, Andrew, saying that Max was right about everything, so he will not marry Lina, leaving Max to tell Lina that the wedding is off. Lina begins the novel putting on a brave face as she is faced with the mortifying truth that she, a wedding planner, is now a jilted bride. Fast forward to Lina walking into a life-changing meeting with a hotel manager to discover that she must work with either her ex-fiancé or his brother, so she pretends not to know them. Lina and Max work together to maintain the ruse so Lina can become the official Cartwright Hotel wedding planner and so Max can step out of his brother’s shadow in their family company. Along the way, they come to the startling realization that they both have strong feelings for each other and let’s just say things do not go as planned. Short review: The Poppy War by R. F. Kuang is the first book in an epic fantasy trilogy that is inspired by events that took place in China during the twentieth century. This novel is full of magic and mayhem and it’s centered around Fang Runin (AKA Rin), a poor war orphan who lost her parents in the Second Poppy War. In an attempt to better her life, Rin tests into a prestigious military school, Sinegard. While at Sinegard, Rin is mercilessly bullied because of her race, her class, and her gender, and just when things begin to look up, war breaks out and Rin and her classmates are sent off on assignments to help defend their country from their enemy, The Federation. As all this is happening, a power awakens in Rin, and she studies to become a shaman to control her often alarming power. This book is about the grim realities of war and the price of power. I highly recommend it for anyone who appreciates coming-of-age fantasy stories without a focus on romance and epic fantasy stories based on military history. 5 out of 5 stars More thoughts on: https://stormyskyreads.blog/2021/07/23/review-of-the-audiobook-of-r-f-kuangs-novel-the-poppy-war-narrated-by-emily-woo-zeller/ #fantasybooks #thepoppywar #5outof5stars #bookreview #bookstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/CRry5nss_Fb/?utm_medium=tumblr
