NWK Club again. Was... all over the place today... tweaking interconnected scenes in Part 3 and Part 4 (the finale). I feel like this was the equivalent of pecking at the nest to make sure it was sturdy, and being pleased with the results so far. Very happy with the work today even if I didn't blow off the doors with how many words were actually written.

hi, I'm a new follower but i just realized something I need to share to a fellow lunter shipper.

Luz and Hunter have inverted color schemes OH MY GOD.

I may be a delusional shipper but they had to had known about this right?

A very keen eye! In fact, the reason their color schemes are inverted is because gold and purple are complementary colors on the color wheel! I think Hunter and Luz were very intentionally designed to be literary foils to each other and to have a lot of things in common as well as differences; basically, they complement each other very well, including their costume designs, as you so aptly pointed out! 💛💜

Hey folks! So, if you feel confused or overwhelmed by Cheritz’s new otome game, know that you are not alone. In fact, that has been the experience of many people. That’s why I’m making a few guide posts to help break everything down. It’s not quite as chaotic at it first seems once you get the hang of things. 

This first post will give you a tour of the main homepage of the game, what you see when you first log in. I’ve created an image that numers each item you can interact with, starting from the top left and going roughly clockwise. Explanations for each item are under the cut.

#1 - PIU-PIU Flavor Text

Pressing the wing icon will give you a random flavor text from PIU-PIU

#2 - PIU-PIU Antenna

This icon will let you know what your current subscription services are. 

If you have not subscribed to any service it will list the basic features you can access for free. 

If you have subscribed to a service it will list the additional features you currently have access to. It also has a button that brings you to the subscription page.

#3 - Anti-Gravity Chamber

This button brings you to the anti-gravity chamber. This is where you can open your Creature Boxes. When you have Creature Boxes they will appear floating in your chamber, and you simply click on them to open. 

Creatures are basically little virtual pets that you collect from gacha pulls. They come in a variety of species and colors.

You cannot interact with Creatures in this chamber-- it’s only for opening! To interact with them, you will need to visit the Sunshine Shelter.

The fridge in the bottom right of the chamber is where you store Creatures. The button on the bottom left tells you the rates of the gacha pulls.

#4 - Energy Meter

Pressing on this rainbow-colored little meter will display how many Energy Orbs you currently have of each type. It also will list flavor text describing each type of energy orb. 

The purpose of these orbs will be explained in further detail in my next post! But very briefly, Energy Orbs are refined in the Incubator into Frequencies, Emotions and Gifts. Frequencies and Emotions are used to discover planets and then are used as currency in their corresponding planet. Gifts can be given to other players.

#5 - Aurora Batteries/Research Assets

The battery icon (right next to the Energy Meter) will display how many Aurora Batteries you currently have. Aurora Batteries are the game’s primary mode of in-game currency, used for various things such as speeding up chats, making phone calls, etc, similar to Mystic Messenger’s Hourglasses.

Pressing the battery icon will lead you to a page that lists all of your current Research Assests. 

Research Assets are just the various items you can get in the game for free or for purchase. 

-Bonus Aurora Batteries is a list of how many free Aurora Batteries you currently have.

-Aurora Battery tells you how many current batteries you have that you’ve purchased

My #1 post of 2022

Feeling emotional and decided to post this here.

When this moment happened in the show,

It meant so, so much to me. It wasn’t just Hunter taking Luz’s hand. It was him finally accepting her help, finally allowing himself to be truly vulnerable with her. 

I think I’ve included this sort of moment in every one of my fics because I think about it so often, because the symbolism is so potent to me. So simple but so powerful. So when I finally saw this moment unfold on the screen, the one I’d imagined for so long, I wanted to sob with joy. 

This is Hunter opening up to Luz; this is the start of something big. The moment it begins. 

There is so much hesitation and anxiety in his eyes, but there’s also this soft hope and trust. He’s giving Luz something so delicate and precious of his. I get so emotional every time I look at it.

Covid-21: Lethal Virus (2021)

Film review #591

Director: Daniel Hernández Torrado

SYNOPSIS: After a new strain of Covid turns most people into zombies, a biochemist is travelling to a laboratory to work on a cure when her convoy is attacked by zombies. She runs into a lone survivor, who begrudgingly accompanies her, and the two have to survive the harsh countryside overrun with zombies...

THOUGHTS/ANALYSIS: Covid-21: Lethal Virus is a 2021 zombie film. It is also (perhaps unsurprisingly) part of a host of covid-zombie movies that appeared around this time. The film revolves around a typical zombie plot (with a covid twist): the melting of polar ice has released an ancient super strain of covid that turns people into zombies. Following on from that statement which should never be uttered, we have the typical post-apocalypse world where the survivors have to avoid becoming undead themselves. Into this unoriginal setup we have a biochemist named Allyson, who is being escorted to a secret lab where she will be able to develop a cure. Unfortunately, her convoy is attacked by zombies, and because no one in this film has ever seen a zombie film before, the convoy is overrun and Allyson has to make it to the lab on her own. Well, until she runs into Scott, an angry loner who sort of accompanies her to argue all the way. The story consists mostly of this bickering and occasionally hacking away at some zombies, without any real direction or development. There's nothing original or interesting about this post-apocalyptic world, and it's all been done before in better films. The use of "covid" as part of the premise is irrelevant, as this "super strain" is only mentioned off-hand in dialogue once, and was probably only put in to promote the film.

The characters are all dull and unlikable: apart from Allyson and Scott and their distinct lack of any chemistry, there's also two random soldier guys who are walking through the woods too, whose little side-story has no real purpose other than to shove some more action scenes in, I suppose. But again, the lack of any originality makes it uninteresting. All of this is supplemented by some poor acting and flat deliveries, and there are points where the actors clearly mess up their lines. The little twist at the end doesn't really add much when the characters always feel disposable and without purpose anyway.

The production as a whole feels very unprofessional, with horrid, shaky, close-up shots that make it difficult to follow what is going on (and to avoid paying for backgrounds and sets), the colours are all dull and washed out, and the lighting is haphazard and nonsensical. I know you can't be too judgmental when it's an obvious low budget film, but there's still a lot more that could have been done with what they had. There's nothing to recommend Covid 21: Lethal Virus in any way: it's unoriginal, unprofessional, unstructured, and any enjoyment you might get out of it being a "bad" film is scuppered by it being just so incredibly dull. Avoid.

Premise: Ethan is wearing an unusual accessory :)

"What was that?"

The question slipped out before Haley was able to think twice. Something weirdly yellow flashing from under the hem of Ethan's sleeve caught her eyes when she was about to exit the office.

"What was what?"

"On your wrist."

"Nothing." Ethan replied sternly as he pulled his sleeve over his wrist.

She quirked an eyebrow,

"I saw something on your wrist, and that did not look like the rolex you always wear."

"I have 12 different watches. I don't always wear that Rolex you're referring to."

"I know, but I also know your impeccable taste and I'm pretty sure if that was one of your luxury watches you wouldn't have tried to hide it so fiercely."

Despite his best efforts to remain calm and collected, the blush on his face was getting more and more severe by the second.

"Why don't you mind your own business rookie?"

"Oh come on, let me see! I won't tell anyone, I promise."

With the twinkle in her brown eyes, widened by curiosity, and her mischievous grin, Haley was looking far too adorable for him to resist.

"Your resistance is only making it worse you know."

"let it go!" Ethan grunted as He put the hand under investigation in his lab coat pocket and pinched the bridge of his nose with the other.

"come on! Please, let me see what is it that making the Dr. Ramsey blush like this!"

"I'm not blushing!" He scoffed.

"You look like a tomato!" She snorted, "A very... wise and respectable...tomato." She added carefully in response to Ethan glaring at her.

Haley took a tentative step forward, stretching her hand towards him, and then shot him one of those looks that always made him give in instantly, no matter what she was asking for. Whether she wanted a cop of coffee or for him to jump off the Empire State Building, he would've done it for her. This time was no exception.

"Oh my god!! Oh dear!" Haley's attempt to suppress her laughter as she saw the yellow accessory on Ethan's wrist was completely unsuccessful.

"Oh Christ!" Ethan rolled his eyes.

"Why are you wearing a SpongeBob SquarePants watch??"

"A 7 year old patient gave it to me as a present and I promised him to wear it all the time. Not that it's any of your business."

He responded in a quiet voice, however, not quiet enough to hide the vulnerability in his tone.

Haley looked at him in awe. Her lips were parted slightly, not being able to turn her emotions into words.

"Ethan, You are the sweetest."

Before letting her logic hold her back, Haley lovingly cupped his cheek. The stubble tickled her finger tips pleasantly, giving her butterflies.

"I just... care about my patients. He's been my patient for over a year and he's in the surgery right now."

"You're worried about him."

The older doctor averted his eyes and nodded silently.

Without another word, Haley wrapped him in tight hug. Ethan nuzzled her hair, inhaling the familiar orange blossom scent.

Their moment were interrupted by the knock on his door, making them spring apart.

"Dr. Ramsey, Adrian Cooper is out of surgery."

"Thank you Sara."

Haley looked at him with a tender smile,

"Wanna go see him?"

"Yeah let's go."

With that the attending bolted out of the door, leaving Haley behind.

"What a kind heart he has, and how hard he tries to look like an ass."

She shook her head with an amused smile and ran after him.

A Toast to Diplomatic Dangers- 2.0k. It's difficult to enjoy a nice dinner when everyone at the table is hell-bent on killing you. Obi-Wan and Anakin find this out the hard way.

A Magnet for Trouble- 3.9k. Anakin gets too close to a Sith artifact, and Obi-Wan must figure out how to get his padawan back.

Just Resting My Eyes- 1.2k. During a war, sleep is few and far between sometimes. Especially for stubborn Jedi who think meditation is a substitute for a REM cycle.

I Need an Adultier Adult- 2.6k. Obi-Wan is newly knighted and facing some issues adjusting to having a padawan. Anakin isn't exactly making the transition easy on his new master.

Four Walls and Two Jedi- 10.0k. Obi-Wan and Anakin get exposed to a deadly virus and must spend two weeks in quarantine battling sickness, ghosts from the past, and worries for the future.

Drunken General Kenobi: A Field Observation - 4.5k. After a long time of being deployed, the gang decides to go out for drinks on their first night on leave. Obi-Wan has a little too much to drink and chaos ensues.

Safe ~ 1.3k. He keys in the door code, still the same as when he was a padawan. Obi-Wan's front door slips open and Anakin walks leisurely inside. Something is definitely wrong. Anakin's first clue is the cloak abandoned in the center of the floor. His second clue is the pang of warning that cuts through the Force a moment too late.

Vanitas no Carte Mémoire 49 Analysis

It took me a great deal longer to get to this than it normally does. Life has been busy! But what a chapter; there were a lot of unforeseen things that happened in this one.

The previous chapter explored Misha and Vanitas's time with Dr. Moreau and their eventual in the form of Vanitas of the Blue Moon. This chapter continues that thread and we get some idea of what their time with VotBM was actually like. Needless to say, it's a bit different from what I anticipated.

VotBM's personality is a lot more easy-going in a lot of ways than I thought it would be. Before now, all the flashbacks portrayed her as a somber person, but, of course, we were only seeing her somber introduction at Dr. Moreau's lab. There are certain impressions I had of her that haven't changed, though, and that's that she is powerful and knowledgeable.

Right here we can see she has a pretty good understanding of the chasseurs and how they operate, but we notably still don't know why she was there to begin with. Later in this chapter, Vanitas directly asks her why she has saved them, which is essentially asking why she was there, and she doesn't answer. We never get an answer and I find that a bit suspicious. Why not say something even if it's just "they were bad people and I wanted to stop them?" But she doesn't, which implies that isn't why she did what she did.

We finally get to see VotBM's facial features as well. I think I've seen some people compare her looks to Faustina's, but I'm not sure I can see that very well just yet. It certainly would be interesting if they turned out to have a connection, though! What I can say is that VotBM's eye has many spirals in it, which is similar to Ruthven's. If this is a mark of a vampire's power (and a vampire's eyes do seem to have a lot to do with their power) then I think it's safe to say VotBM is very powerful indeed. She also has some crystalline decorations underneath her eyes and I can't say if that's actually part of her skin or just makeup. If it is part of her skin, perhaps it's another mark of being born under a blue moon? Or perhaps of her power?

Regarding her eyes, I will also note we only ever see the one; her other eye is conveniently covered by her hair. Is it because it's missing or is there some other reason? Vanitas, when he tried to hurt her, went right for her eye, which is how she identified he'd had chasseur training. Could she have had a run in with some chasseurs that went badly at some point in her life?

Another impression I had of VotBM was that she was a loner outside of Vanitas and Misha, but that is quickly disproven as well. She says "Those around me call me Vanitas" and she acquires lodging through a human contact. Therefore, VotBM must speak with people a fair amount, and by the sounds of it she speaks most with humans who dabble in the occult. When you think about it, it makes sense. Other vampires would be too frightened or suspicious of her to want anything to do with her, while devout humans would likely see her as a devil. But humans that are also outsiders with their beliefs? Perfect companionship for one such as herself. I wonder where this puts dhampirs. Would she interact with them or would they be more likely to share most vampire's views on her? We've never heard Dante talk about her nor any of the other dhampirs, so I guess we can't say just yet.

Getting back to VotBM's name, it's interesting that she says she doesn't have a name she likes yet. Names have a lot of meaning for vampires. I wonder if she's being honest when she says she simply hasn't found one she likes or if there's another reason for not choosing one. Maybe a name, even one that isn't a true name, can have power and she doesn't want to risk it?

So, we learn a little bit about VotBM, but we also learn some things of Vanitas. Oddly, while these are supposed to be Misha's memories, I feel like we're learning a lot more about everyone else. I suppose he is trying to show Noé that VotBM was killed by Vanitas and that is why he should help him, but still.

I think we're starting to get to the root of some of Vanitas's issues with women at long last. So, he never met his mother, but he's constantly told he looks like her. He assumes his father must have hated him for taking his mother away, which implies his father did something to give that impression, though we aren't told what. And then there's the small matter of Vanitas doing all the feminine chores of the household. This one is a lot more indirect, but we can infer it from a later scene with Misha and VotBM:

So, VotBM is a bad cook. It's portrayed humorously, but what we really learn is that Vanitas is a great cook. And a great tidier. It also looks like he continues to do the baking for their trio judging by the second panel and it looks like quite elaborate baking as well. It also continues to be proven that VotBM honestly has no idea what to feed children whatsoever judging by the alcohol. At least she only gave it to Vanitas...

What I'm getting at, though, is that in order for Vanitas to be this good at cooking and cleaning, he'd have to have done a lot of it already. It's possible his father was a meticulous person and taught him. Perhaps it's something they enjoyed doing together. Or, alternatively, without a wife he gave all the traditionally feminine tasks to his son and expected him to take care of things. I kind of think it's the latter considering Vanitas's issues with women. He was constantly compared to his mother visually when he was young (and indeed both VotBM and Misha exclaim she must have been beautiful, implying Vanitas himself is beautiful like a woman), was likely expected to maintain the home, and his father may have resented him for not being his wife. We also have Vanitas trying to be a doctor in the present, which was his father's profession. Indeed, Vanitas has gone out of his way (in some regards; his hair is an anomaly here) to behave in a "masculine" fashion: he tries to take charge of his relationships with women, makes digs at other people (i.e. Astolfo) for looking feminine, and is trying to pursue a career he associates with men's work. Talk about a lot self-image problems all rolled up into one person!

And here's the thing. I think Vanitas might genuinely enjoy cooking and cleaning to some degree (he certainly dislikes messiness at least), which might make things all the worse for him since I think he's trying to assert is masculinity and he probably doesn't see that as masculine. It's hard to say; we still haven't heard much from Vanitas himself on a lot of different matters.

Another revelation about Vanitas this chapter is just how kind he is, as much as he does his very best to hide it both in the past and the present.

VotBM points out that with his chasseur skills, Vanitas could have easily escaped from Dr. Moreau and his lackeys. So why did he stay? And the reason was very simply so that no one else would be hurt to get to him. Someone--a stranger--had been killed so that Moreau could kidnap Vanitas. If he escaped, how many otherw would be hurt to get him back?

Earlier in this arc we saw that Vanitas allowed himself to be tortured to protect Misha. I found this surprising because, while it's in character, it's also an extreme action to take. But now we discover that Vanitas didn't just do that because he kind of knew Misha; he cares so much about others' lives he subjected himself to Moreau well before he met Misha.

Vanitas has a lot of things to work out in the present, but there's no denying there's a genuinely good and kind person underneath all his hangups, and that person is coming to the forefront more and more as the series goes on. Even though things started out remarkably poorly with Jeanne, there's no denying he is trying to help her in his own way, and he's been softer towards Noé lately as well. Vanitas does care about people; he just wishes he didn't.

Around this point, Noé begins to surface from Misha's memories or at least they begin to fast forward. Still, there are a few important points that are made before the chapter ends. One of those revelations is that Moreau's experiment on Vanitas and Misha nearly worked: they were very nearly rewritten into being vampires. But it didn't quite work and they're now hovering between the two races. I wonder if this is a problem dhampirs have and, if not, why not? All of this has raised a lot of questions about dhampirs for me. Regardless, VotBM solves the problem by making them her kin. I don't quite understand how marking them prevents them from being rewritten. I mean, I think it was a temporary fix because if they use her power they wind up rewritten anyway, so I guess it's more like stuffing a shirt into a leaking pipe. It slows things down, but you still have a problem.

Misha accepts VotBM's offer readily, but Vanitas flat out refuses, saying he wants to "stay human until the very end" and if that isn't ominous foreshadowing I don't know what is. What does being rewritten mean now that he's been marked by VotBM? Will he simply die or will he lose his humanity instead? But despite Vanitas's refusal, we know he is marked by VotBM. Did he change his mind or was it forced on him? The flashback doesn't say. But it does show us this:

That first image is a little unclear. I'm positive the text panel was placed in just such a fashion to obscure important information, but basically we see that Vanitas was marked by VotBM. There's blood all over him, which also implies there was either a struggle to prevent this from happening or, I guess, he was coughing up blood and dying. Misha was bleeding quite a bit as he was being rewritten, too. Hard to say. But the second panel shows that Vanitas really did kill VotBM. Unless she can come back from the dead, she seems pretty definitively dead, turned to dust and everything, and it's heavily implied he killed her for marking him.

And yet, that still feels nearly too straightforward. I don't actually have an alternate theory at this time, but I have to wonder if that's all it was or if there was more to it. It's decidedly strange for him not to just tell Misha; certainly Noé's life would be easier right about now if he had.

And speaking of Noé and Misha, we have jumped back to the present! And Vanitas has arrived!

I had wondered how Vanitas would react when he found Misha and Noé, whether he would be furious, shocked, appalled, etc. It seems, for now, that he's settled on "dour acceptance." He definitely doesn't look shocked, so he had some idea of what Misha was going to pull. And while he doesn't look happy he doesn't look overtly furious either. Very curious how things are going to continue in the next chapter, which to my understanding will be in March. Ahh, let's do our best to wait patiently! I really want to know what happens. XD

"Guard!" I shouted to the man standing outside in completely black cloths. "I want to talk to the doctors." I heard him talking over his radio, but I couldn't understand what he was saying. I didn't have to wait for long, before he unlocked my door, grabbed my arm and started leading me towards the lab. The corridor walls were white, with a blue horizontal line crossing on the middle. The ceiling had bright long lights laying across it, making the white paint turn into a bluish colour. People were walking around in lab coats with plastic boards and test papers in their hands almost bumping into each other as they were deeply lost in their thoughts. 

As we were walking further I was looking through the windows of each of the rooms. They kept all the children separately to test their newest theories of... of... "I couldn't remember". The kids I saw in the rooms were not even human anymore. They were skinny, weak and barely alive. I remembered how I was just like them 591 days ago. Yes, I was counting the days indeed. I wanted to be with Minho and the fact that I couldn't, made me desperate. I promised him to stay alive and get stronger. And so I did. That's why it was so hard to look at the kids suffering. They had no determination, no goal to survive anymore. But I have had.

"Good morning." One of the doctors greeted me as we stepped inside the lab, but he didn't even look up from his paperwork. "How can I help you, Y/N?" He was short and chubby with a moustache and beard. A thick brown framed glass was sitting across his cheeks. He was going bold, but he was trying to hide it with a very obvious toupee which didn't even match his own hair colour.

"I want to go to the Maze. I want to do the trial." I stated simply. He looked up at me with raised eyebrows and a curious look in his eyes.

"And may I ask why is that?" He asked adjusting his glasses on his crooked nose.

"Because I want to." I replied mysteriously.

"And would you explain to me why you made this decision?" He asked elbowing on his notes.

"You let Minho go instead of me. Now let me go too." My voice never sounded so powerful before.

"Yes, indeed but that was an exception. After such recovery which you have showed us, why would we want to send you for the trials? Keeping you here is beneficial for our tests." He explained. "Give me one good reason to let you go into the Maze. And don't even try to use Minho as an excuse. You know very well that your memories are going to be wiped out. You will not remember him and he already forgot about you. You will be a nobody to him." He smirked at his brilliance.

"Yes, I will be a nobody. But I rather suffer through years of not knowing who I am, then to stay here. And you know very well, that I will sabotage your tests, just as I have been doing it in the past couple of weeks. I was only beginning to show my true colour. You've seen nothing so far. You can keep me here while I will be demonstrating how someone desperate can destroy years of work, or you can let me go and test me as you wish there." The look on his face was of serious thoughts. He was well aware of my test results in the last couple of days. I have made sure to get useless readings each time, this way they had no use of me.

"You know, with the chip we will be able to control your mind, right?" He asked trying to threaten me.

"I don't care." I shook my head.

"Fine. Let it be. You will be sent up soon." He nodded and turned back to his paperwork. The guard grabbed my arm again and started pulling me back to my room. I wanted to feel happy, I wanted to feel the victory, but somehow I just couldn't. I was relieved that I could see Minho again, even if we wouldn't recognise each other. But I was scared about what the future was holding for us.

When I woke up, I realised the sun was still up. Or was it up again? My head was throbbing and I felt hot. I was once again worked up about a new dream and I was getting tired of them. I felt like never wanting to sleep again. I couldn't understand why I was getting all these imaginations. I couldn't believe that it could have been reality. I was just trying to push them to the back of my mind.

As I dressed up and walked out of my room, I saw some familiar faces lazing around. Their change of clothes made me realise that I indeed slept through the day. I didn't even have to question it when my stomach loudly growled at me. I felt like I was doing nothing but eating and sleeping lately and I didn't fancy such a lazy, useless life-style. I walked to the Kitchen and grabbed some food to satisfy the beast, in other words my stomach.

As I finished my food, I walked out of the kitchen and fixated my eyes on a very handsome view. The sun was strong and bright and I just couldn't take my eyes off of how the drops of sweat were reflecting the sun's powerful light as they were rolling down his toned half-naked body. He was exercising to keep himself in shape, but he was also doing so, to get rid of his unneeded energy. As he turned around still sternly continuing his exercise, I saw something. Something that I was hoping my mind created only. Something that I was wishing not to be true.

I started walking up to Minho, almost in a daze. I completely lost control of my body. My mind was leading me as if it wanted to get a confirmation. Minho stopped his exercising as I was getting closer to him. I saw the confusion on his face when I stopped in front of him with a blank expression.

"When did you get this?" I asked him while pulling my finger across the scar on his shoulder. He looked down to understand what I was talking about.

"Oh, that. I am not really sure." He replied. "I already had it when I arrived." My eyes widened and the only thing I could think of was the dream I had about Minho getting shot. It looked just like a scar left after a gunshot.

"No." I whispered. I looked back up at him to see an utterly confused expression in his eyes. I didn't have the energy to explain or to understand completely. I just wanted to forget all the dreams I had. I was afraid to remember or to know more. I knew if such a key part of my dreams were to be true, than all of them had to be. It scared me too much. I shook my head and whispering 'headache' I walked back to my room and laid across my bed. I just needed some rest. Yes, that will solve all this mess. I needed some dreamless sleep.

Washington state was the initial epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak in the United States. And New York is now the hardest-hit part of the country so far, with hospitalizations increasing at rapid rates — more than 37,000 people had been diagnosed with the coronavirus in New York as of late Thursday afternoon.

Because COVID-19 hit blue, coastal states first, and because politics is politics, the response to the pandemic hasn’t exactly been apolitical.

But blue states are hardly alone in what is becoming a nationwide epidemic. Jefferson Parish, Louisiana — which went for Trump by 15 percentage points in 2016 — has a death rate about equal to that of Manhattan. And as terrifying as the hospital situation is in New York City, hospital capacity is also under strain in states such as Michigan and Georgia.

Overall, although the number of detected cases is higher in blue states, the number is increasing at a more rapid rate in red states.1 Moreover, blue states have conducted more tests per capita than red states, so — given that the large majority of coronavirus cases remain undetected — the lower rate of cases in red states may partially be an artifact of less testing.

Here is the data as of late Thursday afternoon, with states sorted by the increase in confirmed COVID-19 cases between Monday (March 23) and Thursday (March 26).2 All data is taken from the invaluable COVID Tracking Project.

Nine of the 10 states that have seen the most rapid increase in coronavirus from Monday to Thursday are states that voted for Trump in 2016, led by Texas, where the number of reported cases increased by 297 percent.

On average, states that voted for Trump saw a 119 percent increase in cases over this 3-day period, as compared to an 88 percent increase in states that voted for Hillary Clinton (plus the District of Columbia). Weighted by state populations, the difference is slightly larger: 141 percent in states Trump won and 88 percent in states Clinton won.

For now, states Clinton won do have considerably more total reported cases. As of Thursday, Clinton states had 4.29 positive tests per 10,000 people, as compared to 1.13 per 10,000 people in Trump states. A lot of that difference is attributable to New York; without New York, Clinton states have 1.89 cases per 10,000 people.

But the nature of exponential growth is such that these differences could evaporate in a hurry. If reported cases in Trump states continued to increase at 119 percent every three days (about 30 percent per day) while reported cases in Clinton states increased by 88 percent every three days (about 23 percent per day), then the per capita case count in Trump states would surpass that in Clinton states within about 30 days, or by late April.

Hopefully, the rate of increase will slow in both types of states as we begin to see further effects of social distancing measures in the data. However, these measures were generally enacted earlier and have been more forceful in blue states. That means the rate at which new cases are being diagnosed could slow down faster in blue states than in red states, meaning that red states would catch up earlier.

Blue states have also conducted more testing than red states. In states with reliable estimates of the number of positive and negative tests as of Thursday night,3 Clinton states had conducted 21.8 tests per 10,000 people as compared to 12.5 tests per 10,000 people in Trump states.4

That means the true gap in the number of cases may not be as large as the roughly fourfold difference in reported cases between blue states and red states right now. States such as Louisiana have discovered they have far more cases than they originally realized as they’ve ramped up testing over the past week, and other red states (and blue states) could follow.

COVID-19 has also led to a slightly higher case fatality rate (the number of deaths as a share of the number of known cases) in red states so far. As of Thursday evening, the death rate per case was 1.7 percent in Trump states as compared to 1.3 percent in Clinton states. This could reflect a variety of factors, including potential underreporting of cases in Trump states,5 the age and health of the populations in each set of states, or the efficacy of responses by local health care systems.

However, the higher fatality rate it is a somewhat troubling sign for red states given that many of them are generally at an earlier point in their epidemic curves, meaning that many people who have acquired COVID-19 in those states have done so recently and have not yet developed the most serious symptoms that could lead to long-term hospitalization or death.
