1945 04 P-51D Mustang 'Big, Beautiful Doll ' Col. John Landers 357 FG - Stan Stokes
Col. John D. Landers, the pilot of the Big Beautiful Doll, was born in 1920 in Wilson, Oklahoma. He attended Texas A & M and Arkansas State University before joining the Army Air Corp. In March of 1941 Landers graduated from aviation cadet training and was commissioned as a second lieutenant. With America thrust into WWII following the attack on Pearl Harbor, Landers was assigned to the 49th Fighter Group and set forth to Australia. Flying a Curtis P-40 out of bases in Darwin and Port Moresby, Landers became an ace by downing two Betty bombers and four Mitsubishi Zeros. When his first combat tour ended, Landers returned to the States as a P-38 Lightning instructor. During a second combat tour Landers was assigned to the European Theatre as Commander of the 38th Fighter Squadron of the 55th Fighter Group. On June 25th 1944 Landers downed his first German aircraft, an Fw190. Several days later he would bag three Me110s on a single day. Later in 1944 Landers was made acting Commander of the 357th Fighter Group. Flying a P-51 Mustang for the first time he obtained an aerial victory on November 18th. Landers returned to America for a brief rest following completion of his second combat tour. However, by January of 1945 he was back in action as C.O. of the 78th Fighter Group which flew out of Duxford, England. Landers attained 3 ½ additional confirmed aerial victories and destroyed many additional enemy aircraft on the ground. In fact the 78th Fighter Group destroyed 125 German aircraft on the ground on April 16th 1945, which is a record for one day. After V.E. Day Landers was given command of the 361st Fighter Group which he was preparing to take to the Pacific when the war ended. Officially credited with 14 ½ aerial victories, Landers decorations include the Silver Star with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Distinguished Flying Cross with three OLCs, the Purple Heart, the Croix de Guerre, and the Air Medal with twenty-one OLCs. The ace returned to civilian life after the war where he was active in the pipeline business in the Southwest. He retired in 1975, and passed away in 1989 from complications during surgery. The P-51 Mustang played a major role in the Allied victory in WWII. The P-51 was the first fighter with the range to accompany bombers into Germany, and tangle with the best of the Luftwaffes fighters on an equal basis. Many Mustangs carried unique personalized paint schemes. The Big Beautiful Doll is considered by many to be one of the classics with its checker board cowling, black rudder, and red accents.

After that, he was able to return the plane to the Wormingford base in the UK."

The RAF First Aid Kit is hanging from the waist strap of his B-3 life preserver. Merriman of the 20th FG 79th SQ, posed with three of his ground crew. I'll simply list the items in photo and you find them: A-11, Type-C's, AN-H-15, B-8's, A-14's, B-2's, B-8's again, B-10's, M-3's, B-4's, AN-6550/AN- S-31A "Crusher" and P-51 (Further down this page is a second group of pilots from this same FG SQ). For you beginning collectors, I will make this a test photo. That hose is from the anti-G suit Type G-1 or Type G-2. The pilot on the far left has a hose extending from the waist. Shown circled are the RAF first aid packets. (F-7) Shown above is a an excellent photo of a group of 364th FG pilots. 1 large wound dressing / and 1 safety pin. Either way, both kits contained the following: 2 morphine syringes / 2 anti-burn mitten-gloves / 1 tube of anti-burn jelly 1 oz. One refers to the anti-burn gloves as mittens while the other kit describes them as gloves. The only difference is the printing of contents. The one kit displayed on my fighter pilot is stamped MkIII. RAF: Flying Equipment of the Air War, 1939-45", there were 3 variants of the Aircrew First aid kit - The Mk I, MkII and MkIII. (F-6) According to Mick Prodger's excellent book "Luftwaffe vs. Also in the photo, the connection point for the life raft is shown clearly. One can only speculate on how or why some of these kits wound up in some of the fighter groups. This RAF kit shows up in a few photographs, but not as prevalent as the US parachute first aid kit. (F-5) Shown above is a closer look how the RAF First aid Kit was hung from the life preserver strap. bomber crews, but were much more prevalent with U.S. These gloves show up in a few photos of U.S. (F-4) Shown above is the RAF 1941 pattern gloves accompanied by the silk inserts. The men are shown turning in their personal items before going out on another mission. He too was shot down and became a POW in Nov. Jensen wearing the tanker jacket and pants/coveralls. Garlock who was shot down May 1944 and became a POW. Larsen wearing the tanker pants/coveralls that go with the tanker jacket. (F-3) Shown above are three pilots of the 55th FG. Its use decreased when the B-10 jacket and A-9 pants arrived. The jacket and pant/coveralls were made of the same material and had the wool blanket type lining. It was warmer than the A-2 jacket and more comfortable to wear. The name "tanker jacket" seems to be the term mostly used. (F-2) Shown above is the Tanker Jacket or Combat Jacket. Several of these items are shown in more detail in the photos below. Plus one more RAF item, the AM (Air Ministry) marked whistle. issued first aid kit, the AN-6530 goggles, the A-14 oxygen mask with T-44 mic installed. issue: The tanker jacket and pants/coveralls (shown folded in front), the B-3 life preserver, the B-8 parachute with the U.S. Additional RAF items shown above are the 1940 pattern flying boots, the white silk gloves worn under the 1943 pattern gloves and the RAF 1942 pattern type C helmet. The RAF first aid kit did not replace the standard issue first aid kit tied to every parachute, but was an addition. The RAF first aid kit shows up in the 20th and 364th FGs and possibly more. My figure is based on the many pilots of the 20th and 55th FGs. (F-1) Shown above is one example of what fighter pilots wore late 1943 into the first half of 1944. VIDEO: USAF releases first images of the new EC-37B Compass Call
The video released by the U.S. military shows the EC-37B Compass Call electronic warfare aircraft arriving at Davis-Monthan Air Base.
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 08/23/2022 - 11:00 am Military
The new EC-37B Compass Call aircraft arrived at Davis-Monthan Air Base, Arizona and the military members of the 55th Electronic Combat Group had the opportunity to see the electronic warfare aircraft (EW) up close for the first time.
BAE Systems is the mission system integrator for the program and Gulfstream is the original manufacturer of the specialized EC-37B aircraft, a special mission Gulfstream G550 that meets the requirements of the U.S. Air Force (USAF). As a platform integrator for the program, L3Harris is migrating, or cross-decking, from legacy EC-130H Compass Call mission system to EC-37B.
youtube
The G550 platform increased the speed, endurance and extended range of the inherited EC-130H aircraft - providing significantly improved survivability. The new platform will provide combatant commanders with improved interference capacity and flexibility to combat sophisticated communications and radar threats.
Members of the 55th Electronic Combat Group closely watched the EC-37B Compass Call electronic warfare aircraft.
The cross-deck initiative extends the U.S. Air Force's critical electronic warfare mission for many years, while allowing you to overcome your opponents and combat emerging technologies. The superior reliability and sustainability of the G550 means that only 10 EC-37B aircraft provide EW capacity equivalent to the original fleet of 14 high-demand EC-130H aircraft. The Compass Call mission system interrupts enemy command and control communications and limits the opposing coordination essential for the management of the enemy force.
The Compass Call system employs offensive counter-information and Electronic Warfare resources in support of U.S. and coalition tactical air, surface and special operations forces. It is part of the suppression of the enemy air defense triad, and the scheduled updates have expanded its mission, acquiring a secondary electronic attack capability against early warning radars.
The U.S. Air Force's Compass Call program has been in operation for 40 years. The highly deployed EC-130H aircraft served in all major U.S. contingency operations and, until recently, have been continuously deployed to support U.S. Central Command.

The L3Harris aircraft mission facility in Waco, Texas, has been providing warehouse-level integration and maintenance services for the legacy EC-130H Compass Call fleet since 2003.
