I got a refurb canon rebel t7 as a wedding gift last year and have several good lenses (Tamron something for landscape, and a canon 55-250 mm for zooms) both of which are second hand from camera shops, but I was wondering what exactly do you recommend for a birding setup? Preferably dedicated amateur-friendly, and not national geographic level! Also I'm limited to the t7 for at least a while. The 55-250 is blurry at max zoom but I can get decent pictures with good lighting and a stationary subject and I wonder if better lens will help. Thank you!
Hi! I'm gonna be honest, 85% of my wildlife photos on this blog were taken with my Canon Rebel T6i and a Canon 55-250mm. It is not a professional level lens but it is extremely versatile and was my go-to for years and years. I would highly recommend it as a budget lens for pretty much everything!
I would personally stay away from the Canon 75-300mm. It's a decent lens but you get a lot of distortion and I found the image stabilizer lacking. I used my 55-250mm much more than my 75-300mm.
My current set up is a refurbished Canon 7D, which I really like so far, and a Sigma 150-600mm. You can definitely get better lenses (and better cameras) but for where I'm at in terms of skill, usage, and budget, it's pretty much perfect. I'm really excited to get out more this year now that I have a really solid set up!

A few pictures of a Tephritid fruit fly (or maybe two individuals?). These photos are from different days, but both showcase the inkblot-wings and iridescent blue/green eyes of these beautiful flies.

These Anemones looked inviting whenever we passed by and so we would end up taking a couple of shots each time.

Managed to barely capture the Orion Nebula with a 18-55mm lens. I'm looking at getting a 55-250mm or a 75-300mm lens in the future.

Bio's SDL
I looked at Raymond Sagapolutele's bio (that one was my favourite because it was concise and clear, and highlighted his work and history without needing to resort to bullet points). I also liked how Ann Shelton's bio was written, and her body of work is so impressive and beautiful. I looked at Richar Robinson's which I thought was almost too concise? Really fast and bullet-pointy in a way. I also read Rob Suisted's bio and that wasn't my favourite because it has a sales-pitchy tone and didn't feel as personal, i guess?
So I'll keep those points in mind with my attempt here:
******************************************************************
I am a novice photographer, originally from Oman, now living in Pakuranga, by the Tāmaki River in Auckland, New Zealand. After escaping oppression and fear, and finding a new home in Aotearoa, I recently re-discovered my voice, and love for expressing myself creatively. As a communication design student at AUT, I am currently learning the art of photography, and it has become my way of exploring my creativity, history and identity.
I am deeply inspired by the way light interacts with nature and objects, and I find motivation in the vibrant colours around me, like the tonality of the sky and the natural world. My work focuses on moments that either feel frozen in time, or burst with energy, aiming to evoke strong emotions, and express my own inner emotions and story. I primarily use an ancient Canon EOS 700D, and a 55-250mm Canon lens for most of my work, although I also experiment with also taking RAW photos on my iPhone 14 for versatility and ease, since my DSLR is quite bulky, and sometimes I find ease and speed are needed to capture a moment before it’s lost.
Currently, my work centers around the idea of 'Home' in Tāmaki Makaurau, exploring the concept of outdoor spaces as a form of home, as opposed to the typical indoor scenes of “home”. I am also working to express my identity, and conflict with “home” as an Outsider -having had to leave my original home once upon-a-time. My work explores my place, and love for my current home under the roof of Tamaki Makaurau, while navigating the terrain of lost heritage, and heritage gained. I began with Takapuna Beach because I remember it as my favourite ‘road-trip’ when I first came to Aotearoa. There is a rocky and cumbersome path towards a ‘hidden’ beach that I loved clambering towards at low tide. Representing a journey, and stunning destination, worth the effort. I’ve been there many times, and introduced it to close friends, and it was one of the first traditions I’d made for myself here.
I have expanded my work to other locations, including the Tāmaki River that runs behind where I live as I see it each day, high and low, and it brings me a sense of comfort and love for this land. I also included the High Court in Auckland City, as I used to live by it, and justice and liberty is something that has been gifted to me by this land, my home.
I aim to reinterpret Tāmaki Makaurau with a lens of my cultural identity, and show my  sense of belonging to this land, and deep love for my home here.
As I continue to grow as a photographer, I am inspired by more and more creatives, and am currently inspired by the work of Hoda Afshar. Her portrayal of oppression and emotive landscapes speaks to me deeply. Her use of contrast and shadow, as well as her ability to make the ‘intangible’ tangible through photography, is something I aspire to achieve in my own work. I have been a long way, but my journey in using my voice is just beginning, and I look forward to exploring how I can tell stories through the lens of a camera.
