A recent report by the National Pharmaceutical Council provides an overview of seven different value frameworks. Specifically, the overview includes value frameworks developed by:

Asset-Based Mindsets for English Language Learners
English Language Learners (ELLs) have often been considered a minority segment of school populations. However, ELLs are growing as a learner population twenty-five times faster than overall student population growth (Mavrogordato & White, 2020). While many schools currently implement specific pedagogical approaches to serve ELLs, these approaches often reinforce a deficit narrative about ELLs that has been written through policy in the United States. To better serve ELLs, educators must understand the formation of current mindsets about ELLs and then combat the status quo through asset-based mindsets that actively advance equity and social justice.
Policy’s Role in the Formation of the Mindsets About ELLs
Deficit mindsets about ELLs, whether explicit or implicit, may be the product of decades of ineffective policy that has left ELLs underserved. Although the 1954 landmark decision of Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka ruled that segregation was inherently unequal, many ELLs remained effectively segregated through the means of language (Cruze & López, 2020; Torres-Velasquez, Sleeter, & Romero, 2019). “Prior to the Lau Remedies, resulting from the 1974 Lau v. Nichols Supreme Court decisions, [Dual Language Learners (DLLs)] were denied access to grade-level curriculum due to schools’ use of language grouping that separated DLLs from mainstream classrooms despite the Brown (1954) desegregation orders” (Cruze & López, 2020, p. 82). The Lau Remedies provided guidelines about instruction and resources, but they were nebulous and did little to recognize the assets of non-English-speaking students (Robinson-Cimpian, Thompson, & Umansky, 2016).
It was not until the Castañeda v. Packard ruling in 1981 that policy gained definition in the form of 3 provisions: 1) ELL programs must be research-based, 2) programs must be adequately resourced, and 3) effectiveness of such programs must be evaluated (Cruze & López, 2020). While more explicit than the Lau remedies, the Castañeda provisions did not ensure every non-English-speaking student would receive a quality education equal to that of their English-speaking peers. As with the Lau Remedies, the Castañeda ruling left execution to already inequitable schools and did not define criteria for success. Moreover, Mavrogordato & White (2020) describe how the Castañeda policy is often interpreted rigidly and with perfunctory understanding, without considering the nuance of serving ELLs.
For example, some systems, such as Arizona, allow instruction in English only, even though there is evidence that native languages can be used to make instruction more effective (Cruze & López, 2020). English-only instruction creates two disadvantages for ELLs: the language barrier denies access to grade-level curriculum, and it minimizes the student’s native language (Cruze & López, 2020). In the case of Martinez v. State of New Mexico, plaintiffs alleged that education was insufficient for at-risk populations, including Native and ELL students, on the grounds that their culture was minimized in favor of American English-speaking culture (Torres-Velasquez et al., 2019).
Such cultural minimization is pervasive. In 2010, legislators passed a bill barring a Mexican-American studies curriculum in Arizona because it was viewed as an attempt to overthrow the national government (Torres-Velasquez et al., 2019). The legislators claimed the curriculum was a threat to national security, even though the program had demonstrated positive academic results for students (Torres-Velasquez et al., 2019).  Cultural minimization reaches far beyond the Southwest.
Within the last nine years, 32 states have implemented the Seal of Biliteracy as an award for students who graduate high school with proficiency in two languages; many states have intentionally omitted ELLs from policies framing the Seal, meaning ELLs who become biliterate cannot receive the award because their native language is not recognized within policy (Heineke, Davin, & Bedford, 2018). By and large, such omission is an attempt to avoid political opposition, demonstrating the deficit mindset toward ELLs in the sociopolitical system (Heineke, Davin, & Bedford, 2018). Over the last 66 years, policy has remained vague and minimized heritage cultures.
In the words of Cruze and López (2020), “The U.S. has a long history of tension surrounding equitable access to education for students who speak a language other than English at home” (p. 81). It is important to understand how the history of educating ELLs in America has created a context in which unequal instruction can persist, native languages and cultures are seen as a deficit, and limited understanding of both the law and research can result in poor results for ELLs.
Leadership Postures that Advance Equity and Combat Deficit Orientations
Two leadership postures that promote equity for ELLs are: 1) affirming students’ native culture – including language – as an asset, and  2) insistence on grade-level curriculum for ELLs (Torres-Velasquez et al., 2019; Robinson-Cimpian, Thompson, & Umansky, 2016; Mavrogordato & White, 2020) Affirming students’ cultural and linguistic identities might include practices such as culturally-relevant curriculum, cultural pedagogy, multicultural education, bilingual education, and including students’ communities as stakeholders (Torres-Velasquez et al., 2019; Heineke et al., 2018).
Torres-Velasquez et al. (2019) define multicultural education as a philosophy that promotes justice, equity, and dignity in such a way that students are ready for the responsibilities of a globalized world because of their pluralism. It is important to note that none of these practices in isolation fully affirm heritage cultures. In the 2014 case of Martinez v. The State of New Mexico, legislators asked whether students should receive a bilingual or multicultural education, but such questions present a false choice (Torres-Velasquez et al., 2019).
Rather than seeking a singular system or practice, strategies that affirm students’ heritage should be used in concert. One affirming strategy often overlooked by schools is the explicit engagement of ELLs’ families and communities, which is frequently avoided because school leaders fear the language barrier (Cruze & López, 2020). Additionally, promoting ELLs’ full integration into the school community such that native English speakers build an appreciation for ELLs’ cultures is key to affirmation (Cruze & López, 2020; Mavrogordato & White, 2020; Robinson-Cimpian et al., 2016).
While access to grade-level curriculum is not a singular lever to promote equity, it is central to the learning experience. A common practice is to provide ELL instruction as a pull out from the general education classroom. As a result, ELL students frequently do not participate in grade-level curriculum necessarily for equitable schooling (Torres-Velasquez et al., 2019; Robinson-Cimpian, Thompson, & Umansky, 2016; Mavrogordato & White, 2020). 
“Research identifies four main ways in which access to core content is frequently limited for ELs: (a) English-only instruction without appropriate accommodations, (b) weak or slow-paced curriculum in separated classes for ELs, (c) tracking into low-track (low-level) classes, and (d) exclusion from core subject area classes” (Robinson-Cimpian et al, 2016, p. 132). In pull-out classes, teachers may struggle to teach grade-level content to ELLs, and students do not have access to meaningful content discussions with peers (Robinson-Cimpian et al., 2016, p. 132). These low-track courses often teach through rote practices and avoid critical thinking which compounds the problem (Robinson-Cimpian et al., 2016). When students cannot access advanced courses with challenging curriculum, dropout rates increase (Mavrogordato & White, 2020).
Conversely, Cruze & López (2020) indicate that when students have access to grade-level curriculum, a virtuous cycle of achievement is created and students are able to learn increasingly advanced material which has positive impacts on student achievement and graduation rates. Access to rigorous, grade-level curriculum is paramount to move toward equity for ELLs. The impacts of such access goes far beyond academic success and may determine ELL persistence (Mavrogordato & White, 2020). By affirming cultural identity and providing access to grade-level curriculum, educators promote asset-based practices to better serve ELLs.

BOSTON (CBS)– 5 more brands of hand sanitizer have actually checked positive for a hazardous chemical.

Uma das maiores locadoras de veículos do mundo, a Hertz, está lutando para não entrar com pedido de falência nos Estados Unidos. Com quase toda sua frota parada no mundo devido ao isolamento social, a empresa está praticamente se livrando dos Chevrolet Corvette Z06 que têm.
A Hertz sempre foi reconhecida por ter uma divisão de performance de carros de aluguéis. A característica desses carros é que todos eram encomendados nas cores da empresa. Pintados em um esquema que mescla amarelo e preto. No caso dos Corvette, eles eram amarelos com as faixas e rodas na cor preta.

Segundo a CNN Business, a Hertz possui uma frota total de 568 mil veículos ao redor do mundo e 12.400 locais corporativos e de franquia. 33% desses estabelecimentos, que representam quase 70% do faturamento da Hertz, estão em aeroportos, que também tiveram queda de movimentação. Só nos EUA, os números de voos caíram mais de 90%, impactando o faturamento da locadora.

Blog Post #2: American and UK Healthcare Systems
American health care and United Kingdom health care are significantly different. American health care is a system that is mostly funded by private health care insurance companies. Two exceptions are Medicare and Medicaid, which are government programs. Medicare is for those who are 65 and above, and Medicaid is for those who qualify as poor. Healthcare in the United Kingdom is not run by insurance companies, but is available to all. It is called the National Health Service, or the NHS. The NHS is a state-funded system that guarantees care for all. The NHS is divided into four parts: The NHS England, NHS Scotland, NHS Wales, and the Health and Social Care in Northern Ireland. For the purpose of this blog, I will be talking about the NHS in general, NHS England, and NHS Scotland. The main difference between NHS England and Scotland is that the central government in England is responsible for health care and health policy, while in Scotland, the devolved governments hold this responsibility (Grosios, Gahan, and Burbidge 2010). The NHS includes ambulance rides, emergency room visits, surgery, chemotherapy, and much more. And the catch? Nothing. All of it is for free, thanks to payment in payroll taxes that people constantly put in. Medication received at hospitals is also free, and the cost of prescription drugs at a pharmacy are relatively cheap (Frayer 2018). Even though there are many benefits with both health care systems in both countries, there are some disadvantages. The biggest downside with American health care is that it tends to cost a lot of money. Another issue is that Americans spend the most on healthcare compared to other nations, with covering the least amount of people with the worst overall health outcomes (Sainato 2020). For the NHS, the issues lie with the amount of people they can hold, and the type of treatment people can get. With the constant flow of people, hospitals can fill up very quickly because it is free to visit. For example, my British friend said that she needs to get her wisdom teeth removed, but she is not sure if she wants to. She told me that the only method the NHS offers to remove wisdom teeth is through a needle to numb the mouth. They cannot administer laughing gas, which she prefers because to the NHS, it costs a lot less to use needles compared to laughing gas. After my own personal experience in the United Kingdom and after my research, I have found that American health care fosters an independent culture, while UK health care fosters an interdependent culture. For example, people in America can choose what type of health care they want (TRICARE, UnitedHealth Group, CVS Health, etc.), while people in the UK only have the NHS. One big difference I learned is with the UK commercials. They do not have any commercials about medical prescriptions that contain all potential side effects, because the NHS determines what is best to prescribe to its patients. American commercials are plagued with different medical prescription commercials with every side effect imaginable, because we get to choose what we think will work best. American independence is fostered through the choice of whatever health care provider we want, while the UK is interdependent because all rely on the NHS. In a way, American health care providers mostly act like businesses. According to our Clash! Chapter 8 Notes, business makes up 75% of American workplace cultures, while government only makes up 16%. Businesses breed creativity, motivation, and independence to make their product the best of the best. For the NHS, these statistics would be completely switched. The government would take up the majority of the workplace culture, with business a tiny percentage.

Yaris XLS: equipamentos, motor, consumo, revisões, concorrentes
Os compactos estão ficando cada vez mais refinados e equipados. Se até pouco tempo atrás a Toyota vendia o Etios como representante do segmento, hoje ela tem o Yaris como destaque. E é o Toyota Yaris XLS que oferece “tudo do bom e do melhor” aos consumidores do hatch e sedã compactos da marca japonesa.
Tudo bem que este modelo custa o mesmo que um Toyota Corolla de dois anos atrás. Isso não é um demérito ou exclusividade do Yaris XLS, visto que os outros rivais seguem a mesma linha. Porém, o Toyota Yaris XLS recompensa na lista farta de equipamentos de segurança, conforto, visual, acabamento e tecnologia.
Atualmente, o Toyota Yaris na versão XLS é o único hatch compacto que dispõe de teto solar. E nesta configuração, hoje chamada de XLS Connect, o recurso é um item de série.
Confira abaixo todos os principais detalhes do Toyota Yaris XLS 2020:
Toyota Yaris XLS – detalhes
Disponível no mercado brasileiro há quase dois anos, o Yaris não é um dos mais vendidos da categoria. Mas também não faz feio no mercado, ainda mais por levar o aclamado logotipo da Toyota na dianteira – o que é símbolo de confiança para muitos.
Por conta dessa confiabilidade, o Toyota Yaris não é aquele carro que procura se destacar, sobretudo no quesito modernidade. Ele ainda usa motor aspirado que rende somente 110 cavalos de potência máxima e 14,9 kgfm de torque máximo. Rivais como Chevrolet Onix e Onix Plus, Hyundai HB20 e HB20S e Volkswagen Polo e Virtus já têm a opção de motores turbo com câmbio automático.
Numa primeira olhada, o Toyota Yaris XLS agrada pelo visual com traços agressivos e modernos, seguindo o padrão mais atual de design da marca japonesa. Um dos destaques é a área das janelas laterais que conta com um aplique preto que simula um prolongamento até o vidro traseiro.
O hatch e o sedã são praticamente idênticos até a coluna traseira. O três-volumes apela para um formato mais fluído, que inclusive contribui para uma aerodinâmica mais eficiente, refletindo nos números de consumo – melhores no modelo familiar.
Por dentro, ambos usam plásticos pretos por todos os lados, mas com materiais de boa qualidade e com bom encaixe das peças. Nesta versão, há detalhes cromados e em preto brilhante, além de bancos, volante, alavanca de câmbio e parte dos painéis de porta com revestimento em couro preto.
O espaço interno do Toyota Yaris também agrada, ainda mais por contar com assoalho plano na traseira e ainda pelo entre-eixos de 2,55 metros. O porta-malas do hatch tem capacidade para 310 litros de bagagens, enquanto o sedã leva 473 litros. Um dos pecados é o tanque de combustível com capacidade para somente 45 litros de etanol e/ou gasolina.
Esta versão XLS tem como destaque a lista de equipamentos, com direito ao já citado teto solar elétrico, além de sete airbags, sensores de luz e chuva, luz de posição e lanternas em LED, retrovisores externos com rebatimento elétrico, central multimídia com Android Auto e Apple CarPlay, entre outros.

Toyota Yaris XLS – motor
Ao contrário de modelos como Polo e Virtus, Onix e Onix Plus e HB20 e HB20S, que já utilizam modernos motores turbo flex, o Toyota segue apostando nos motores aspirados. A versão topo de linha XLS do Toyota Yaris 2020 é equipada exclusivamente com o motor 1.5 litro flex Dual VVT-i DOHC de 16 válvulas.
Este propulsor 1.5 é construído com bloco e cabeçote em alumínio, sistema ETCSi de abertura da borboleta do acelerador (que corrige acelerações desnecessárias para gerar maior economia de combustível e acelerações mais ágeis), sistema flex sem tanquinho auxiliar de gasolina para partidas a frio com etanol, entre outros.
Trata-se do mesmo motor já usado no Etios, mas com um aumento de 3 cv na potência máxima e 0,5 kgfm no torque máximo.
Neste caso, são 105 cavalos de potência quando abastecido com gasolina e 110 cv com etanol, a 5.600 rpm. O torque máximo é de 14,3 kgfm com gasolina e 14,9 kgfm com etanol, a 4.000 giros.
Junto a ele está o câmbio automático Multidrive do tipo CVT (continuamente variável), que conta com um software que simula até sete marchas, mesmo quando o motorista conduz o carro com a transmissão no modo Drive. Ou seja, ele não proporciona aquela sensação de “marcha infinita” (o que é irritante para alguns), simulando marchas como se fosse um câmbio automático com conversor de torque convencional.
Além disso, essa transmissão tem a opção de trocas manuais sequenciais através da alavanca de câmbio ou ainda por paddle shifts (ou borboletas) posicionadas atrás do volante.
Ainda falando a respeito da mecânica, a Toyota diz que a suspensão do Yaris foi adaptada para o mercado brasileiro. Em comparação com o modelo vendido lá fora, a configuração nacional do compacto teve a sua altura elevada em 13 mm. Fora isso, adotou eixo de torção com barra estabilizadora no eixo traseiro.
A dianteira conta com suspensão tipo McPherson com batente hidráulico, que evita batidas secas quando a roda atinge o limite do curso do amortecedor.
O Yaris 2020 oferece também direção elétrica progressiva, que fica mais leve ou mais rígida conforme a velocidade.
Toyota Yaris XLS – consumo
De acordo com o Inmetro no Programa Brasileiro de Etiquetagem (PBE), os números de consumo do Yaris Hatch e Yaris Sedan na versão XLS, com motor 1.5 flex e câmbio CVT, são estes:

Estes podem ser os principais rivais do Toyota Yaris no Brasil. O Fit e o City seguem a mesma linha dos Toyota, mantendo o padrão japonês, com motorização aspirada e preço elevado. Eles usam um 1.5 litro flex de 116 cv e 15,3 kgfm, com câmbio CVT.
Só o Fit tem controles de estabilidade e tração e assistente e partida em rampas. Current Value Assessment Landscape in the US
A recent report by the National Pharmaceutical Council provides an overview of seven different value frameworks. Specifically, the overview includes value frameworks developed by:
American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association (ACC-AHA),
American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO),
Avalere/FasterCures Patient-Perspective Value Framework (PPFV)
Innovation and Value Initiative (IVI) Open-Source Value Project (OSVP)
Institute for Clinical and Economic Review (ICER),
Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (DrugAbacus),
National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN)
The paper has a number of nice comparison tables, including the following.

The study also finds that the value assessment tools are influential. In a 2019 survey of 534 payers, 76% of respondents had previously used an ICER report, 24% had used the NCCN Evidence Blocks, 7% had used the ASCO framework, and 5% had used ACC-AHA. Other value frameworks (i..e., DrugAbacus, PPVF) had <2% use and IVI was not included in the survey.
Department of Veterans Affairs Pharmacy Benefits Management Services, CVS Caremark and the New York Medicaid program, among others, have publicly announced their use of ICER’s analyses to inform their decision-making
The report, however, notes limitations of many of these frameworks including: a lack of patient centeredness, lack of transparency (with the notable exception of IVI), focus on evidence largely from clinical trials, a focus narrowly on pharmaceuticals, and either confusing output or output that provides a false sense of precision.
In short, while there has been much progress on the value assessment front in the US in recent years, there is much work left to be done.
