Hello! I have a fanfiction archive (Potions and Snitches) that I would like to help survive forever... I heard that you made a 503c charity with a board, etc. that can survive you. I'm trying to do the same. Could you help advise me? :)
100%!
You can contact me offline if you want to talk (Squidge.org Blog has details) but you need to register to become an LLC, then the IRS and state you're living in/the LLC is registered with, then get an independent pers to be your treasurer and another for secretary, plus a couple Bard members. Then once you get IRS approval you'll need to establish a bank account, register for taking donations (paypal is probably the best because EVERYONE uses it) and start keeping records.
Lots of moving parts. We can chat if you'd like.

In terms of groups blocking weapons do you think Palestine Action and Stop Weapons MN are good to give to and support
Honestly, I do not know. I know the former has been involved in some actions but nothing specific and I definitely know nothing immediately about the latter For me, I look for the following: Is everyone masked? Are they keeping out/away press and counter protestors? Do they have arrest plans in place? Do they practice dearrest? Who else organizes with them? Do they protect participants' identities? A lot of people doing direct action have been independent groups of people who may know each other from work, school, worship, or any other communal social spaces & they decide to take action. I'm always wary of any nonprofits involved (which Palestine Action is) and especially if they organize with dangerous groups like PSL or RevCom. There are many ways to shut down war factories and they don't all require large groups of people doing blockades and many of them can be done in small groups or alone. None of them require a 503c. Personally, I will always recommend first and foremost giving to mutual aid groups active in your areas of concern-- they are directly supporting the most marginalized people, which can often include protesters. A lot of mutual aid groups supported the 2020-21 protests and remained active for years & have been providing aid to protests supporting Palestine this past year.

Tag Game: Get to Know Me
Thanks for the tag, @brendaonao3! (Note for people who tag me in tag games: I love to be tagged in tag games, even though my typical response time suggests otherwise.)
Name: Carly
Pronouns: she/her
Star sign: Maverick sun, Iceman rising Sagittarius sun, Leo rising, Pisces moon
Number of siblings (+ any fun facts): One of each, both younger. They look like each other, but I don't look like them at all. (Oddly, my sister and I both look like our mother, but in different ways.) When my sister and I were little, my mom used to have to tell people that yes, we had the same father. (Bc people think it's fine to ask stuff like that? Also I have very curly hair, and it's a recessive trait that one person in every generation on my mom's side gets, but people are so weird about natural curls, and every new hair dresser I see asks, "Who did you get them from?" and a disturbing number of them have made jokes about my mother's infidelity and my questionable parentage when I inform them no, neither of my parents have curls. Who raised y'all?)
Number of pets & their names: Currently, I myself only have one animal, my dog, Elio. But 1. I am actively looking for another dog, 2. My family has a ton of dogs, and 3. We all volunteer for dog rescues (Yes, plural. My sister actually started her own 503c NPO rescue a couple years ago bc her own, like, extra credit financing of homeless dog medical bills was going to bankrupt her, so she had to start a charity so people could donate. She specializes in senior and special needs dogs, but works with local city and county animal control agencies so she gets a lot of breeder and hoarder surrenders, and subsequently ends up with, for example, 18 purebred Bernese Mountain Dog puppies several times a year.) The point is, there's, like, a whole lot of dogs in here.
Fandoms: They are legion. Mostly active in Top Gun rn. Again. Still. Still again.
Favorite song: They too are legion, but include Fiona Apple - I Know, Fleetwood Mac - Silver Springs, Hozier - From Eden, Lake Street Dive - Good Kisser, Bad Company - Bad Company, Natalie Merchant - My Skin. Lately, I'm listening to the following a very normal amount: Tracy Chapman - You're the One (it is Icemav af BTW check it out)
Favorite author: Fiction: Neil Gaiman. Nonfiction: Mary Roach.
Favorite fic type: I like established relationships, true love and people just enjoying each other, and happy endings.
Favorite holiday: Ugh I hate this. Um, New Years Eve.
Do you have a partner (romantic, qpr, etc)?: I already told you I have a dog. Nope.
Hobbies: Dogs, writing, art of various kinds (mostly drawing, some painting, and I am always trying new things like building a tufted headboard, teaching myself to sew, or making custom funko pops), gif making, Val Kilmer.
Fun facts about you: I've never had a cavity. I ran over myself with my own car. I can't figure out if I have 12 tattoos or 13. I can French and Dutch braid my own hair. My favorite perfume is Chance by Chanel, but I also wear Daisy by Marc Jacobs if I want something lighter.

AC-a-a-a-a-B, screamed the goat
again, we see the police PR machine & a complicit press present the innocuous, bumbling barney fife ‘we’re here to protect’ trope.
the ubiquitous coverage of the screaming goat has reached an international audience [if the BBC counts in that regard].
it reminds me of the ‘ah, look! cops dance with ice cream’ which should have been ‘two scoops of fuck you.’
__
one of the more recent and disgusting examples of police PR/media collaboration has been the ‘viral’ PR: ‘Police dog in Wyandotte accused of stealing fellow officer's lunch.’
this ‘story’ originated from a facebook post by the Wyandotte PD, with an accompanying image edited to appear as a mugshot of a black police dog – named ‘Officer ICE.’
however, i found this posted on a ABC affiliate news website, on the same page as an article about Tyre Nichols’ family pleading for justice and calls for the bodycam footage to be released.
__
the timing and content of these press releases is no coincidence.
on august 1 2016, within weeks after the series of murders by police of Delrawn Small, Alton Sterling and Philando Castille, the cop PR machine rolled out #copsgiveouticecream.
one particular headline — ‘these cops pranked drivers by giving them ice cream instead of tickets’ — fell under the ‘feel good’ category, much like ‘officer ice’ and case of the screaming goat.
text beneath the image reads: "You can see the sense of relief when the officers explain this ‘violation’ to the anxious drivers who all got a big laugh out of it."
i can see intimidation, fear, injustice…
‘no cameras!’ — nor accountability
social media has changed the playing field in the propaganda war for policing. like in the instances of feel good news, cops only like social media when it works in their favor.
the fbi has warned about ‘cop baiting,’ ‘viral attack’ and potential liability. [Social Media and Law Enforcement: Potential Risks; leb.fbi.gov]
unsurprisingly, this particular article expresses an overarching sense of fear and need for control:
Empowered by social media, cop baiting presents a crisis for law enforcement. Questionable videos of police officers are popular on sites, such as YouTube, and can be financially rewarding to malefactors who file claims or lawsuits. For some individuals, a citation or jail time is worthwhile if a cash payoff results. Cop baiting could become so common that officers may not know whether they are facing a situation that is legitimate, staged, or exaggerated for someone else’s benefit. This puts officers’ personal and professional well-being at stake.
so strange, their fave defense for surveillance [search, et al] isn’t mentioned: ‘if you’re not doing anything wrong, why worry…’
copspeak + providing those good feels
i posted the link back in 2016, but i find it’s still relevant:
Copspeak: 7 Ways Journalists Use Police Jargon to Obscure the Truth [fair.org]
FAIR’s CopSpeak series is good for examining the media-PR symbiosis:
“The linguistic gymnastics needed to report on police violence without calling up images of police violence is a thing of semantic wonder."
privatization of public policy has helped drive much of this. [Meet the Company That Writes the Policies That Protect Cops; motherjones.com], [Police Policy For Sale; theappeal.org/].
the lexipol rabbithole can take you through an insular cop-cult[-ure] & convenient shopping for all of your militarized force needs.
‘Police Chief Magazine’ run by a 503c lobbying group, International Association of Chiefs of Police [IACP], reveals some PR tactics in ‘Media Coverage: When It Doesn’t Work Well… and When It Does’ [policechiefmagazine.org]
The Secrets to Success “It is the role of the public information office to push the positive stories to the media,” says Sergeant John Roth, Glendale Police Department’s public information officer (PIO). His office publicizes the department’s Coffee with a Cop events, as well as other newsworthy items, such as when major cases are solved. …
it is imperative to develop a rapport with media representatives. He makes a point of meeting with them and establishing relationships built on trust.
‘trust us,’ said at gunpoint…
[btw, national police week 2023 has begun]

Direct funds are the best way to benefit Palestinians or people at risk in Sudan, but if you are a US taxpayer it's worth considering making donations to Save the Children, UNRWA, UNICEF, or other 503c charities benefitting them to both divert some tax money from the US war machine and to reduce what you will owe on your taxes. You may also have corporate matching options if you have a big employer.
Do not confuse this with direct, mutual aid. But if you have the space for it in your budget it will do a little bit of good both for you and people in need, particularly if you can draw some extra money from an employer in.

Another Trick, Another Treat: Mayte's Moving to Nevada, Y'all!
We didn’t really know where to start because there seems to be so much going on with former financiers attempting to scam Prince’s estate and then former others running that tired belly dancing scam on folks in the name of “charity,” it seems there is just no end to the shenanigans and foolishness. But here we are…
So Mayte is supposedly moving to Nevada, specifically, Las Vegas. Well, if you are going to trick people into donating money to an organization not registered in any state, then Vegas is the place to do it since turning tricks there is a legal profession.
It’s not just the move that has been the talk among the “WTH-is-she-doing-crowd-now,” how she treats her donors has also been the talk of many. Specifically, the claims of a former donor who says she raised over $3,000 for Mayte’s charity and gave $1,000 over her own money for the “cause” and was then threatened by Dave and whomever is running Mayte’s social media. Apparently someone under the guise of Mayte’s account responded to a complaint about the threats by saying “you should’ve [not] crossed us.”
What kind of insane clown car mafia bull**** is that?! How foolish does anyone look running from an able-bodied man who has to ride through Universal Studios in a wheelchair with a puppy on his lap!? There's nothing intimidating about that! Even Baby can't put no "respeck" on that! And he doesn't pay his artists (or his execs). You have to be as crazy as Kim (who bid $61 on a Mayte wall hanging and over $180 for Mayte's flop of a CD? ) to believe a threat coming from the likes of this:
"I'll get you, my pretty, and your little dog, too
Whether this claim is true or not, this man has threatened so many people and gotten away with it. Here he is riding shotgun while there was probably someone who really needed that chair going without because he was too lazy to walk the park.
Whether Mayte is moving to Nevada or remaining in CA, the laws are the same--- she must register her charity with the state DOJ and file a return with the state tax board; this is something she has not done in California even though the DOJ sent her a letter to register and gave her 30 days to do so. She didn’t comply and continues to raise money there as seen in this screenshot:
Does Mayte think she is above the law? Well, here’s the thing, she can violate the state law in CA and remain not in good standing in FL. Fine and dandy. BUT, she would still have to register in Nevada if she moves there. If she is not in good standing anywhere (and she’s in danger in CA as well), Nevada will not register her charity and any fundraising activities done from there are considered illegal and the state will prosecute her and anyone affiliated with that sham in a fundraising capacity. Mayte has asked for donations for food, blankets, vet visits for the dogs and for a facility building fund. If someone responded to an ask for a specific purpose, then the donations collected must go to that purpose, it cannot be used for another unintended purpose, even if it sounds like it is for a good cause; that is still considered a misappropriation of funds and it is illegal. An organized charity knows who their donors are, what campaign they donated to and can assure donors their money was spent exactly for the purpose they designated.
An organized charity not only thanks its donors, but provides a tax receipt at the time they confirm the donation. An organized charity files all the proper paperwork when they are supposed to, remains truthful in its income reporting, and keeps its state registration current and in good standing. An organized charity holds regular board meetings and has bylaws they abide by so that when there are donor complaints, there is an internal process for managing those complaints, not a simpleton knee-jerk response from a bully attempting to strong-arm people online by issuing threats via social media like he was still in middle school. Mayte’s 501c3 is functioning on the one brain cell she and all her minions seem to share. Get your **** together, girl, or this organization of yours--- this fatally unsophisticated pyramid scheme--- is gonna have you and your homies as the principal cast in your own Orange Is The New Black Spinoff, “Real Housewives of Cell Block C.”

Famous Mustangs: Pt 4 - Cloud
Perhaps the most impactful of the horses featured in this collection of famous mustangs is a very pale wild stallion, Cloud. Born in 1995, Cloud was an ambassador for mustangs nationwide (even Congress agreed, declaring him so in 2011).
“Cloud is a pale palomino wild stallion who lived in the Pryor Mountains on the Montana/Wyoming border, a range the Crow Indians called the Arrowheads. Cloud was been documented from the day of his birth until his presumed death by Emmy-winning filmmaker & TCF’s Executive Director Ginger Kathrens. Her films about Cloud, “Cloud: Wild Stallions of the Rockies,” “Cloud’s Legacy: The Wild Stallion Returns,” and the latest film “Cloud: Challenge of the Stallions” aired on PBS’ Nature series and represent the only continuous documentation of a wild animal from birth in the Northern Hemisphere. Ginger’s chronicles of Cloud have been compared to Jane Goodall’s work with chimpanzees in Africa. She has also written three books about Cloud. Cloud disappeared in late 2016 and his body has never been found; appropriate for a legend.”
The pale, flashy mustang was the son of the elegant black stallion, Raven, and the bright palomino mare, Phoenix. Cloud represented a rare color in his Pryor home, which is why he was always released, despite being rounded up numerous times.
Ginger Katherines went on to found The Cloud Foundation, a Colorado 503c nonprofit, that advocates for wild horse populations in the West. (I met her at an event, once upon a time.)
The films include a spectacular set of footage, which I highly recommend for mustang-lovers. I will warn potential viewers that they include some anthropomorphization, and (naturally occurring) harm to horses.

Rights, Wrongs, and Receipts: Rebuttal to Mayte Garcia's Facebook Live
Mayte responded to our last post, as did her fans. For the record, it doesn't matter how good Mayte Garcia's intentions are, if she is going to operate as a public charity in the state of California with federal 501(c)3 tax-exempt status, Mayte Garcia's rescue is required to operate like any other nonprofit organization. In California, the DOJ provides oversight that protects both the public AND the charity's governing body (re:Board of Directors) and ensures that monies collected from donations and fundraising activities. Ms. Garcia's charity presented her Articles of Incorporation to the State Attorney General in 2012 (they are stamped with that date and searchable online). She has a crowdfunding page showing she began raising money in 2012 as well. Even if Mayte collected one nickel, she had up to 4.5 months to register with DOJ. The fact that she didn't nor did she file taxes to the IRS that year places the fault purely at her feet. The fact that in 7 years she has not complied places the onus squarely on her as the named President of Mayte's Rescue. Anyone who has ever run a nonprofit knows this and accepts that responsibility. Furthermore, there are organizations that help people who haven't run a nonprofit learn the laws. As for the validity of the article bringing attention to this matter, saying it is "fake" doesn't make it so any more than saying Mayte's Rescue is legit makes it so. The proof is in documents accessible to the public from the IRS and State of California. Ms. Garcia's live defense is not a referendum on this blog, but further illustrates how ill prepared she is to run this rescue without someone at the helm who knows about nonprofit requirements in California. A crisis management team worth their snuff would have told her it was a bad idea. Mayte expected to bully whomever she hoped would show up and allow her followers to do so as well, particularly Dave Buchansky and uber fan, Kim. We are not on the hot seat here and, therefore, did not need to prove anything. We have the facts and law on our side. If Ms. Garcia was adequately prepared, she'd have consulted the checklist for legitimate CA nonprofits and provided proof of each item listed. She did not because she cannot. Posting the IRS 990 postcard doesn't prove you have CA DOJ registration. Basic high school civics: the IRS is federal, CA DOJ is a state agency and these laws vary according to the statutes passed by each governing body (re: legislature).
Tears and sob stories don't work with the government, period. Bureaucrats do not care about feelings. Show your CA paperwork or admit you weren't aware how detailed the process is and attempt to get your organization on track. Ms. Garcia, the future of your rescue depends on you, it's your name attached to it and on the CA Statement of Information, therefore, you bear all legal responsibility. You can blame this site, if it soothes your ego to do so, but that won't change the facts in this situation. Here's a link to help get you started along with some advice and wisdom from the field: form a new Board and come up with some bylaws. You may also consider amending your Articles because as they stand, they protect the rescue in name from liability, but you and all others associated can be sued individually by donors, which may happen considering you mentioned pocketing money in your live feed. That is an absolute violation and could jeopardize your getting DOJ registration. At any rate, here's the link you need:
