Miraculous Fandom Stats

Ao3 Wrap Up 2023

I don’t know if anyone has done this, I hope I don’t step on anyone’s toes. Here a wrap up for 2023 for Miraculous Ladybug!

This study only assesses the fanfics posted by the last update, so if there was an older fic that was from 2021 that was updated in 2023, this would be captured by this study.

🖤 Works posted to Ao3 in 2023

In 2023 there were 10,515 fanfics posted (including crossovers and all languages). The median word count per fanfic was 2,268 words. In general, each fic received 5 comments, 561 hits and 36 kudos (median).

A majority of fanfics were not crossovers (Fig 1). The peak of Ao3 posts for Miraculous Ladybug was in 2021 with a total of 11,350 fanfics. Fanfics with crossovers have had a steady rise in popularity from 2018 with a peak of 2,609 in 2021.

There was a large shift in a number of pairings, in particular there was a dramatic increase in the number of fics tagged with Felix Fathom / Kagami Tsurugi (see below the cut for Season 5 spoilers). Other notable mentions are also Marinette Dupain-Cheng / Zoe Lee with a 2.5 fold increase in fanfics posted in 2023 (63 in total) compared to 2022 (26 in total).

🖤 Conclusions

It’s been a big year, and one that is controversial in many ways. I was just curious to see if there’s a decrease in activity since the season 5 finale, but it looks like the fanfiction writing is going strong. But are fans tuning out? Or are we trying to create more fix-it fics? (I will delve into that in a different post, since this was quite labour intensive).

There have been some interesting changes in relationship tags as well as tags for Sentimonsters (below the cut).

🖤 2023 was also the year Feligami became official

This has lead to a dramatic increase in fanfics for the power couple.

💔 2023 was also when the sentimonster theory was confirmed

In 2023, there were 192 works that tagged for Sentimonster Adrien, and 95 for Sentimonster Felix and 34 for Sentimonster Kagami. Recent usage for the tag 'Adrien is not a Sentimonster' was also observed (21 cases).

Methodology

Filtering

The analyses start from Sep 05, 2012 when the first promotional video (PV) for Miraculous Ladybug was publicly leaked [1].

Since the website is very active, the information may change as this data is best considered to be a snapshot of the fanfics posted at this point in time. Also note that the filter is also for last update, and not first posted, so that older fics may be captured in later datasets. But for the purposes of this study, I am assuming that if the author is updating, then they are still active in the fandom.

To get an idea on what was posted to Ao3 this year, I have filtered for last published date 01 Jan 2023 - 31 Dec 2023. Note that while there was only an option for selecting by Last Post Date, which meant that works originally posted earlier (pre-2023) would still be captured if it was updated within the bounds of these dates.

Furthermore, it is also possible to backdate works on Ao3 which may also give false results. However, it may be likely that if this did happen it would only be a small percentage of fanworks. As such the data is an approximation of fandom activity during 2023.

Relationship Tags

I have followed the Ao3 rules so that / are taken to mean romantic relations and & for platonic relationships. In this analysis, I have combined the numbers for Felix (PV), Felix Graham de Vanily and Felix Fathom.

This book has been sitting in my TBR since I started back up reading books again and I am now sending out a formal apology on me taking so long to pick up this book. I now understand why some people have multiple copies and editions of this book.

Although the font was extremely small for me so I had to get the audiobook also to follow along....the audiobook simply helped me become even more immersed in the world that Bree Matthews was navigating through.

Now, let's talk about Bree Matthews. The GOAT herself! By the end of the book, she became one of my favorite book protagonists. From the longing of wanting to know what happened to her mother to her development by the end of the book, it was just such a fun experience watching her grow as a character. Especially as the chapter went on and she connected more and more about her roots.

This story just kept me on my toes as each chapter went on. From the plot to the world-building, it was such a roller coaster that I didn't want to get off because I was so eager to know what was going to be next.

I loved the side characters in the book. Sel had me side eyeing him the first half but he grown on me. Nick just deserve best fantasy boyfriend award tbh. Matter of fact, him, Bree, and Sel should just be a trouple or something. I loved that Tracy included so much about Bree and her interactions with other characters. I feel like it made Bree so much more human to see her have a fight with her best friend and see her conversations with her father (the scene in the Waffle House was my favorite).

Overall,

Tracy Deonn...I wasn't familiar with your game. I am seated for the rest of this series. On to the next...aka Bloodmarked.

Highlights of Eps 500-501

Goo was rummaging through Taejin's belongings, to the boy's annoyance. The Red Paper was nowhere to be found, however, and Goo quickly concluded from Taejin's words that the boy knew nothing of it.

Taejin was enraged, but he could barely put up a fight against Goo. After beating Taejin unconscious, Goo took the fake shaman boy out of Cheonliang.

Taejin woke up groggily much later on, and found himself stripped naked, at a red-painted space (this is the precursor of The First Affiliate, in case anyone had forgotten about it), where so many people were made to fight to the death, all stripped naked just like himself.

Eugene told him that they were the worst criminals in the country. And unless Taejin gave up the entirety of his Cheonliang inheritance, said Eugene, he would never leave that place.

Back in Cheonliang, a year later, Mary had lost so much weight that she turned into the girl whom we knew at the start of Lookism. The Cheonliang Fam kids had each turned into ordinary students.

Vin, unfortunately, had regressed into a bully. One of the kids whom Vin bullied was a boy whose love confession Mary rejected because he used to ignore her before she lost weight.

Despite his outwardly tough act, Vin quickly found that people's glances terrified him, especially their implied insult at his "otherness", and their open accusations of the murders he supposedly had committed and gotten away with. In the same way that Seongji was scared of people's glances at his perceived monstrosity.

The pressure of societal judgement was proven too much for Vin, that he started hurting others including in judo classes.

Mary was reluctant to put a stop to his act because she saw that Vin had no other outlets for the immense pain that he was still caught in.

Elsewhere, a crew planned to take over Cheonliang in order to pay for protection money after two "monsters" (Goo and Gun) came and destroyed their premises. After the Cheonliang Fam kids fought that crew, other crews kept coming, eyeing the area as a potential source of money and assets.

When one of those crew members called Vin a monster after seeing the boy's left eye, Vin was so triggered that he almost dropped a motorbike on the man. On the inside, he was thinking that he wanted to follow Seongji (in death).

In an act of solidarity, Jewoo, Taebong and Hyungjae calmed Vin down, saying that he wasn't a monster, that they were there for him in Seongji's place.

Some time afterwards, the Cheonliang boys were deciding on the future leader of Cheonliang through extreme ssireum, and they were interrupted by Taejin.

Apparently, Taejin had also boasted the name of Cheonliang while surviving Eugene's Inferno. And now he had returned to challenge the other boys for his claim on Cheonliang. Jewoo answered the challenge first, yet was quickly slammed to the ground, then it was Vin's turn.

But Vin was still stronger than Taejin, and this was something Taejin bitterly admitted as Vin repeatedly threw him down that he lost consciousness. In cold fury, before Taebong could stop him, Vin lifted and threw Taejin into the sea.

But before he could relish on the harsh victory, Vin was quickly knocked out, and the other three boys were too. Goo had come to save Taejin, after all, since the former young shaman had become one of the Kumdo heir's "secret friends".

Another time skip. Out of nowhere, Vin told Mary that he wanted to go to Seoul and became a rapper. She wondered why, and initially Vin told her that since no crew was targeting Cheonliang anymore and people still wanted to find Shinmyeong, his presence there was futile. But eventually he broke down and admitted that he wanted to run away.

Mary immediately agreed to go with him, and when Vin in exchange asked her why, she just told him that she did it as his friend.

Then in Seoul, Vin gradually became the Vin we saw all those years ago, the one who listened to Duke Pyeon's music but bullied him. And now we know: he envied Duke's inner strength, since he himself was still entangled with his fears, guilt, and shame.

In the present timeline, Vin paid his tribute to Seongji at the now abandoned hut, and managed to avoid the other Cheonliang boys. Yet he found Daniel there, to his annoyance and amazement, and Daniel completely ignored him while talking to Eugene on the phone.

It turns out that Daniel too, was there for the infamous Red Paper, like so many before him. The Paper that was allegedly crucial in bringing down Charles and sparking the hunt for Gun.

Far away in a junkyard at dusk, a pensive Gun was resting alone among his ittobori carvings.

These days, Minako’s life was more than hectic.

There was the obvious having to unpack from the school trip, but she wished that was all.

School duties were immediately dropped back onto her; the student council had her running around everywhere for any reason Hidetoshi could think of, and the ever growing list of clubs and activities she had signed up for and joined also kept her busy.

(Seriously, who told her it was a good idea to have so many engagements?)

On top of that, things weren’t calm either at the dorm. The entirety of SEES was on edge, stuck in this weird place where none of them knew what to do next. Ikutsuki had died, and the Dark Hour still existed, but they had defeated all the Full Moon shadows already… As the leader, it was Minako’s duty to decide when to go to Tartarus again, if they even went.

That’s putting aside Mitsuru’s current situation; grieving her father, and definitely depressed - although she seemed to be feeling better after the trip. Her and Yukari had also grown closer. Hm.

Not to mention, Junpei also seemed to not be feeling well. Something about Chidori?… Whenever Minako asked, he’d brush it off or completely ignore her.

And Aigis’ weird obsession with that new student, Ryoji… If Minako could go one day without hearing about how he was dangerous from her, she’d cheer. Still, she had to admit something was off about him.

And finally, Minako herself was still grieving. She still hadn’t gotten over Shinjiro’s death, and as much as she tried to deny it by showing off her cheerful persona and her bright smile, it had affected her more than she’d like to admit.

All her problems seemed to disappear whenever she was with Akihiko, though. He made her feel lighter. Akihiko was close to Shinjiro too; he understood. Akihiko was worried about the rest of SEES too; he understood. Akihiko was worried about Minako. He helped.

He stood waiting for her in front of the student council room, when meetings ended late, and walked her home, just like she had done a few months prior when she still had the time to wait for him after practice. Sometimes he even bought her a snack; anything to cheer her up.

When they were in Tartarus, Akihiko always checked on her, making sure she wasn’t overworking herself, and pushed for her to take breaks when needed.

He even went out of his way to keep an eye on her in the dorm. He took care of her. Woke her up early to bring her on his runs. Sometimes even cooked for her, if Minako was feeling especially tired. Akihiko may not have been the most emotionally intelligent person she knew, but he still did his best to love Minako.

Whenever Minako was with Akihiko, she felt light.

Whenever Minako was with Akihiko, it was April again, and her only problem was whether or not she’d make friends in Port Island.
