"And his eyes, I could go on and on about his gorgeous eyes. I didn't think someone's eyes could be that beautiful."
"And his eyes. I could go on and on about his hideous eyes. I didn't think someone's eyes could be that plain."
"His skin too, I absolutely love how it glows or the fact his freckles disappear in the winter. It's so cute, I absolutely love it."

"Oh, and he loves space. It's so childish and I hate it. He's so stupid when he rambles on and on about it. I've learned so many useless facts from him."
"I absolutely love everything about him."
"I absolutely hate everything about him."
"I think I'm in love with him."
"I think I hate him."
"I love Finn"
"I hate Finn."

next installment (1000/????)
Also I have I beeeeelieve just two art commissions left to wrap up (not counting Ted Lasso, which is in limbo), one of which is waiting on approval for its next step and one of which I need to do some corrections on before moving onto its own next step. They're both pretty close to done overall so they shouldn't be too much longer. I've been drawing a lot the past couple days, though, so I think I'mma go work on Jedi Finn for a bit. I might take a little nap first because I am a sleepy creature, but that's the overall goal for the afternoon/evening. Also might poke at speed demon Palpatine because uh . . . I'm very Star Wars-oriented this week, if anyone somehow missed that? I know I've been VERY subtle about it.
Seriously I want to do so much Star Wars right now. So much. So we're gonna see if we can't ride that wave and get some writing in!

Describing Stuff
I’ve had this rattling around in my brain for a while, and I’ve got the day off and I’m trying to get used to this ergonomic keyboard I bought, so I figure I’ll write about this for a while.
Recently, I’ve been seeing more examples of really terrible writing where a male author describes a female character, and they seem to go out of their way to make it awkward and creepy and weird. I don’t really feel like quoting any excerpts here, but you can find all sorts of examples on Twitter @men_write_women .
I feel like the common thread with all the ones I’ve seen is this compulsion to describe a woman in exhausting detail. It always seems to boil down to how sexy the woman is, and why exactly she’s sexy, or what flaws she has that disqualify her from being sexy. It’s sexist, because the emphasis is on the character as a sex fantasy for the author, and presumably the reader. If the character has any other purpose in the story, it’s going to be undermined by a 500-word treatise on what her boobs look like. It also insults and dismisses a sizable portion of the audience that, you know, may not be that into boobs.
Writing is about setting priorities. People talk about unlimited creative freedom and building entire universes at the point of their humble quills, and that’s horseshit. Writing is all about deciding which parts of your daydream to keep and which to leave out. You can’t capture every tiny detail of a character, or and object, or a scene. Even if you could, it would take too long to document it all, and the reality is that the reader’s not going to parse that much information anyway. So you have to decide which parts are important and which ones aren’t. And if you blow 1,000 words trying to explain why breasts are cool, you’re sending a message to the reader about what your priorities are. The message is: “I’m horny right now, and my libido is more important to me than this character or your enjoyment of the story.” I don’t think that’s the message authors want to send.
There’s also probably some ego bound up in this. Every excerpt I see on @men_write_women seems to be completely unaware of any of the others. It’s like each writer has deluded himself into thinking he’s the first person to try to describe sexy ladies in print. That, or they think it’s been done before, but never quite right. I sense such an enthusiasm whenever I read these things, like the author is going to pull out all the stops and come up with this literary salute to badonkadonk. And it always ends up looking absurd, because they overthink it. How can they not overthink it? They're trying to come up with an extra-special description of something people see all the time. I’m pretty sure that’s how the word “badonkadonk” was invented, because no existing words were sufficient.
I’m going to talk about professional wrestling here in a minute, but first, let’s class the joint up by looking at the poem “Trees” by Alfred Joyce Kilmer.
I think that I shall never see A poem lovely as a tree. A tree whose hungry mouth is prest Against the earth’s sweet flowing breast; A tree that looks at God all day, And lifts her leafy arms to pray; A tree that may in Summer wear A nest of robins in her hair; Upon whose bosom snow has lain; Who intimately lives with rain. Poems are made by fools like me, But only God can make a tree.
It’s that last line that made me think of the poem just now, because Kilmer recognized that he could never hope to recreate the beauty of a tree in mere words. At best, he could only string together a few lines to remind people of how nice trees look, which is an achievement in itself, but it’s never going to be as good as the real thing. If poems about trees can be beautiful, then how much more beautiful a poem is the tree itself?
But look at all the stuff he leaves out. He doesn’t mention the trunk at all, or the rough texture of the bark, or the way the leaves turn color in the fall. That’s because Kilmer wasn’t writing a monograph about the appearance of a tree for space aliens who’ve never seen one. He was making the assumption that his readers were already familiar with trees and referencing imagery they might have seen before.
I think the same trick can be applied to women (or any humans for that matter), since readers can be trusted to know what they look like. I also think it’s safe to assume that the inherent beauty of humans is comparable to that of trees, so a quick, simple description can be plenty.
That’s kind of my approach to this sort of thing. I’ve always struggled with describing things in stories, mainly because I would see these lengthy, detailed descriptions in books, and I thought I was supposed to imitate that and couldn’t really pull it off. But eventually I realized that I didn’t need to, and maybe I’m better off if I don’t even try. One of the stories that clinched this for me was “Gold” by Isaac Asimov. The main character is contracted to make a movie adaptation out of a book, which happens to resemble another Asimov story, The Gods Themselves. The problem is that the aliens in the book are sparingly described, so the guy has no idea where to begin. Through the author character, Asimov defends his own writing style, opting to keep things fairly abstract, and relying on the reader to fill in the gaps.
I could relate to this, because when I read Les Miserables in high school, I couldn’t get past Jean Valjean’s name, because it reminded me of Jean Paul-Valley, the DC Comics character who filled in as Batman while Bruce Wayne was injured in 1993-1994. Try as I might, I could not shake the image of Valjean trudging through the novel in an armored Batman costume. So eventually I stopped trying, and ran with it. I have no idea what Valjean was supposed to have looked like. Victor Hugo might have described him, but I only ever imagined a young man with long blond hair and glasses. Wearing an armored Batman costume.
I’m not sure exactly when I put it all together, but eventually I realized that it’s all theater of the mind, and ultimately the reader is going to imagine whatever the reader wants, regardless of what you put on the page. If you say this guy wore blue and the reader likes red better, they’ll just start imagining it’s red. They may know factually that it’s blue, but you can’t stop them from making that switch. Now, knowing that, doesn’t it seem a bit futile to describe exactly what shade of blue it is? You can pontificate about the profundity of the color blue, and how the guy’s shirt was the color of the ocean on a blustery afternoon off the shore of Maine, but your reader is like “Nah, mate, I like red better”, then you’re probably wasting words.
I’m not saying it’s pointless to specify details. If a reader was completely unwilling to cooperate with your story, then they’re probably not reading it in the first place. But I think writers need to make peace with the fact that readers are looking for cues and stage directions for their imaginations, not immutable details. That’s why it’s so important to prioritize. Take the most important details and get them out there up front, when the reader is most receptive to them. Boob size is not important. If boob size is one of the top three details for your character, then you either haven’t finished creating the character, or you probably don’t actually have any use for the character.
Just to demonstrate what I mean, I’m going to try to write a description of AEW referee Aubrey Edwards, as if she were a fictional character in a story. I wasn’t sure what to use for an example, but I watched All Out Saturday and she officiated the main event, so I decided to go with her. That’s her on the left, but I probably didn’t need to tell you that, since I think we all know how to spot a referee.
Now, first and foremost, if I were writing a story about a wrestling match, I probably wouldn’t bother mentioning the referee much at all. Their whole role in these events is to be as inconspicuous as possible. They just enforce the rules; it’s the wrestlers who are supposed to be the main attraction. I’d probably just keep it simple.
“The referee was a woman, but Dirk Hardcastle paid little mind to her. His main concern lay in the competitors, and which of them, if either was his archnemesis, Tad Plowshare, in disguise.”
Or I might not even go that far, and just use “she/her” pronouns whenever the referee is mentioned. I want the reader to think about where Tad Plowshare is, not the referee.
Of course, if the big twist is that the ref is important, then I have to go into a little more detail, because now she’s in the spotlight.
“It couldn’t be. Dirk knew it had to be true from the way she looked directly at him and smiled deviously. He would recognize that sinister grin on a thousand different faces. But he had already ruled out the officials and production staff as suspects. He had been so certain of this that he had ignored the referee completely, but she was definitely the one. And now that it was too late, Tad Plowshare dropped the act entirely. She pulled off the tie that held her brunette ponytail in place, and removed the black nitrile gloves from her hands. Only moments ago, her expressions and movements had been those of a consummate professional, focused entirely upon adjudicating the match. Her bright red lipstick had been the only sign that she had any sort of personal life outside of her work. Now, as she laughed in triumph, the red on her lips only reminded Hardcastle of the blood of thousands of innocents, which would soon be spilled as a consequence of his failure.”
Maybe I’m laying this on too thick, but the core things I’m trying to convey about Edwards are her no-nonsense attitude, the way she wears her hair in a ponytail, and the red lipstick she wears, which seems to contradict her serious demeanor. I wouldn’t even bother describing her referee uniform, because everyone has a general idea of what those look like. The other night, I found it kind of odd how the stripes on AEW’s refs look wider than what I’m used to seeing, but a lot of wrestling refs don’t even wear stripes at all, so it really doesn’t matter a lot. I’d probably only bring it up if there was a need to mention variations in uniform. Like if she was officiating water polo instead.
What I don’t need to spend a lot of time on is her figure. I don’t see much point in talking about how fat or thin she is unless I plan to have her crawl through a ventilation shaft, and then I could just confine it to “She fit”. And that doesn’t tell you anything because you don’t know how big the ductwork is.
Physical attractiveness is something I try to shy away from, because I figure that’s a subjective thing, and I don’t see much point in trying to cram my own standards down anyone’s throat. I don’t think it does much good to just declare that such-and-such character is attractive; it’s better to have another character do it instead, and that way it says something about both characters. This one finds the other one to be hot. If I want examples of what they find so hot in the other character, I’ll try to keep it vague. “Well, Dirk Hardcastle has a cute chin. What’s cute about it? Who knows? Who cares? The character who’s admiring his chin, that’s who. But why should it need to be explained in greater depth than that.
The handy thing about this approach is that it leaves large swaths of Dirk’s body open to interpretation. He could look like a troll doll and still have a “cute chin”. He could have chest hair or not, be chubby or skinny, and so forth. So if you want to join in the notion that he’s attractive, you can rule in your own type, whatever that is.
I don’t know if that’s making any sense, but that’s how I try to approach it. When I read these long things about knife-like boobs or gentle slopes of buttcracks or whatever, it annoys me because it feels like whoever wrote that was losing a game they never should have bothered trying to play. All they needed to do was have the character who’s looking at this woman be like “Wow, this is the hottest lady I’ve ever seen” or something like that, describe whatever sexy dress she’s got on (briefly), and you’re done. And only do that when you need to. Dirk Hardcastle doesn’t have time to size up all the ladies, not while that bastard Tad Plowshare’s running loose.

I prepped some refs for my ocs for Artfight! which is currently down lmao! Add me tho when you can here’s my linkhttps://artfight.net/~Melondots !! These guys were previously named the good kids gang for those who’ve seen some of them before but Prisim fits better and ye i know its not spelt right lmao
Seven years ago Winona, inari, onari and Brenna had gone on a hike to find some items to build a fort, they’d all gotten lost in the woods and at sunset they’d reached the creek. Across the creek they saw Anne, Roy, Nova and Sasha.
Anne, Roy, Nova and Sasha. were out exploring as per sasha’s usual antics and after getting lost they’d reached the creek at sunset. Nova had been against going out that day.
When both groups locked eyes the sky erupted in a thunderous sound, a second explosion followed. Something plummeted into the creek. A prism slowly rose from the crater it created spinning slowly, it quickly gained speed as everyone tried to recover and run away, stopping abruptly bursting and cracking into a kaleidoscope of colors, stabbing into each kid haphazardly. After that it collapsed in on itself pulling in everyone into the center of the creek. ( I’ll post what their old colours would look like on them now later)
That day they each gained powers from Ultra. The tester of planets. Ultra sends nine shards to create elements to better the planet and get it ready for Ultras return as Artlu. Artlu will test how the shards have done in restoring the planet, not even the shards know what happens if they pass or fail. They’re not even sure what Artlu is. When all nine shards come together they’ll create one.
Nova took it the hardest. The change was too much. The fear of failure and pressure. She doesn’t talk to anyone from that night and has worked tirelessly to control her powers. She still slips now and then. She hates fire more than anything. She has nothing to do with Prisim. Though she still has to go to school with all of them.
Sasha and the rest went on to create Prisim they were ten and nine of course they spelt it wrong, the name grew on them all.
Prisim did stealthy missions for the good of the neighborhood, finding lost pets, getting cats out of trees you name it. As they grew older they began to do good deeds done by less than nice means. You could say it’s a robin hood sort of situation now.
Prisim is the top crime syndicate in the country, orphanages and food banks are booming. Homelessness is down by 25% and houses are being rebuilt. produce and cattle are on the up. Restoration of forests are doing so well. The government is still after them sadly.
The real fight has only just begun! Prisim isn’t only missing Nova, someone else was at the creek......Prisim needs to find them in a year before the next touchdown of Ultra.
Its not a matter of where to find them its a matter of when.
Powers and how they work under the cut !
Sasha Univera- (SAW-SHA / U-KNEE-VAIR-AH) Lighting
Can create, summon and control electricity. Can use their powers to control electronics to certain degrees. Can blow out and restart mainframes. Gives them an extra boost of energy in daily activities
Thunderstorms with a lot of lightning can cause them to be untouchable for the duration, they have to wear special gloves to properly work with their mechanics. The less they’ve eaten the less power they have aka electrolytes. While they can use their powers while wet it’s the only way it’ll hurt them too so it’s a risk.
Can’t use their powers when too over heated,
Inari Summers ( Inn-Are-e) Living Earth
Can create plants from their body, help along the growth of preexisting plants and can form new plants long as they know enough about the composition of the plant itself.
500 acres is the max they can create in a weeks span after that they'll need at least a two weeks rest.
Constantly is sprouting plants and presses them to look like tattoos
Onari Summers (Oh-N-are-e) Gravity ( Being a Loser)
Can change the density of the atmosphere in a scaling diameter of size.
If she makes it to big and holds it too light for too long she’’ get nauseous, if she makes it big, heavy and hold it for too long she’ll pass out.
She can put these atmosphere changes anywhere in any place, say push you to the left because she made a new gravity to your right
Can’t move very large buildings like skyscrapers.
Anne Squire (Ann / SS-CHOIR) Shadow
Can create balls of black energy, shape shadows, herself and pass through shadows.
If the shadow she entered through disappears on one side she cant go back through it.
Gets sleepy after using her powers too much
Nova Jest (NO-VAH ) Flame
Prisim was unable to collect any information on this individual- IS
Roy Laust (ROI / LOUST) Water
Can shape and control water in all forms.
During rainstorms her powers are unpredictable as well as near large bodies of water. Has to stahy hydrated and moisturized, if dried out or dehydrated cannot use powers.
Can’t create water from themselves
Winona Byrce (Win-owe-naw / BRRICE)
Can manipulate metals, earth, gems and crystals
Has to be touching the mineral/ has to have interacted with it before.
Brenna Quinne (Br-eh-nuh/ Qui-inn)
Can commune with animals. Can calm and understand their needs
Can take on an attribute from one of five of the last animal they've interacted with. I.E Gain wings if theyve spoken to a bird recently. a good smell if a bloodhound
That’s about it! if you have any more question about them or anything my ask is always open lmao

1. HomeLabs 1,500 Sq. Ft Energy Star Dehumidifier - https://www.amazon.com/hOmeLabs-Dehumidifiers/dp/B09BD9GM8S/ref
Very humid.densities such as rooms with missing walls in the room, floors, or large furniture such as king beds, dressers and chairs.
The portable dehumidifier features an automatic shut-off timer (that can be set to 10 or 24 hours) that turns off the unit if not used for one hour, 15 minutes or 30 seconds. Large bulbs and fans suggest the max heat output possible with our design. For this reason we do recommend that you allow time for it to dry properly following whole house application such as a large living room whenever these kinds of situations occur:
It offers energy efficiency up to 92% compared to the leading competitor. This is the best energy-efficient dehumidifier in the market, which is the right choice for your home.
Key Features of the HOMELABS 1,500 Sq. Ft Energy Star Dehumidifier for Medium to Large Rooms and Basements.A large side-mounted dial will allow you to easily adjust its power while using a durable steel control plate on the front panel keeps things tight and secure.

Cons:
The unit stops working when it is not useful for running in excess of 8 hours per day or being on 24 / 7 without turning it off, which may make you annoyed.
You need to get used to the US/Canada plug with bare wires (not GFI) because this unit is too sensitive and if it gets wet, it won't work.

Eva-dry's compact and portable design makes it easy to roll into the crawl space when needed.
I just built a shop and now have air conditioning going because we redid our woodstove chimney protective cap over the winter; unfortunately this summer has been one of hot temperatures so new air vent is essential but trying to find anything to fit through the chimney (even the vented dryers have a 1/2" twist fit) and finding anything on the internet that does is useless.
A researcher claims to know how dangerous indoor radon gas can be in your home; he swears his test kits are safe because they show there's no radon gas inside an enclosed soil space .
Pros:
An all new formulation! Renewable card no longer necessary Larger capacity
E-500 Renewable Extractor
Both the new and old forms of Eva Dry E will be available.
Renewable card no longer necessary Larger capacity No more screw top, bulky lid.

Cons:
The angle the plug comes out of the bottom makes it difficult to charge because the weight of the dehumidifier.
Degreaser - 8/10 Refill container was perfectly recyclable unlike E500 Dry Spray.

Honeywell makes these products smaller than conventional brands and have also reduced their size thru; Less Energy consumption Less weight Smaller body Design why we like:

very large water tank.
Unit does a great job of drying rooms small and large.
Cons:
Does not include a power plug for your electric outlet.
Filter has to be changed up to once a month.
it is only 2.3 gallons of water/day but this is not bad for such a small machine.

5. Pohl Schmitt Electric Dehumidifier - https://www.amazon.com/Schmitt-Dehumidifier-Water-Ultra-Quiet/dp/B083Y74YVV/
If you have a large family or live in a small space, you'll want one of the most powerful dehumidifier that's on the market.
The Dehumidifier will help you keep your home dry and clean, but also free from mold and mildew. These are essential for the health of your family, because these problems can cause issues like allergies and respiratory problems.
It's not worth it if your home is only used 3 months out of year with high humidity, because having mold will cause health problems in years to come such as lung disease, asthma etc..
A good dehumidifier will help you reach an optimal humidity, around 30% and lower, because a too high level can damage the structure which leads directly to mold growth.
The tiny house feeling is one of its charm, you can enjoy it more by making your space as dry and clean as possible.
Pros :
Best dehumidifier for small houses.
Very quiet.
The pump is resistant to vibration (should be mounted on a wall).
3-year warranty if you register your device.
Energy efficient and no refrigerant, so it can run all year long without being plugged in.
Cons :
Not available for bigger spaces.
Since condensation can get inside the unit, it’s needed to clean regularly.

April 29th marks the 28th anniversary of the establishment of the Children's Embassy Megjashi. Dear friends, supporters and associates, In this rather troubled time, we would like to share with you the joy of our 28th anniversary of many years filled with work and activities under all circumstances, years dedicated to helping suffering children, years of grief, but also years of fulfilment being aware of the fact we can be supportive. We have left many years of work behind. In larger or lower scale, crises are an integral part of our history, and for one who is suffering or in need of help, there is no larger or lower scale of crisis. 1992-1996 Dedicated to supporting children affected by the war in the former Yugoslavia/refugee children from Bosnia and Herzegovina accommodated in Macedonia We started with the Bosnian crisis and the need to take care of a large number of refugee children. We organised a flight from Sarajevo and publicly called for accommodating the children in Macedonia. We are still in contact with many of those children (now adults), some volunteer, and some physically distant, but close in their hearts, continue to follow our work. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=epWnA9k7-_k&t=994s https://www.facebook.com/groups/mojdrugidom/ 1999-2000 The Kosovo crisis, support for Kosovo refugee children in Macedonia We also worked in the camps during the Kosovo crisis. https://www.facebook.com/pg/megjashi/photos/?tab=album&album_id=130948550304430 2001-2006 The insurgency in Macedonia We accommodated 16 internally displaced persons from Arachinovo in our shelter, families with 8 children. Three babies were born in this shelter - Aleksandar, Maria and Nikola. Families have been accommodated in our shelter for five years. We have organised summer camps for over 500 children, five years in a row from the crisis areas in Macedonia. https://www.facebook.com/groups/2387578188142339/ https://www.facebook.com/pg/megjashi/photos/?tab=album&album_id=165771196822165 2016 Stajkovci flood We were together in the flood in Stajkovci with a group of volunteers on the field almost the entire time. We provided direct assistance to those affected by food and medicines, and together with the PHI University Clinic for Dermatology, we opened a medical point in the Primary School "Kiril i Metodij" in s. Stajkovci, where examinations and medical care were provided to children. https://www.facebook.com/groups/856858227777831/ 2016-2017 Help and support for migrants who transited through Macedonia The last refugee crisis led us from Tabanovce to Gevgelija, we worked directly with refugee children, we collected humanitarian aid, but we also tried to encourage empathy and understanding towards refugees through the manual "We are all children of this world" which elaborates on the content of the manner in which one should talk to children about the refugee crisis. Within the “Macedonia with Love for Aleppo” campaign, we provided humanitarian aid, clothing and footwear for 350 children from five refugee centres without parental care, accommodated in Turkey's border zone with Syria. https://youtu.be/s0N71FOf904 https://youtu.be/uXMAlKFG51E https://youtu.be/OfRCsiilJKo https://www.flickr.com/photos/childrens_embassy/35387616401/in/datetaken-public/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/childrens_embassy/32900588690/in/datetaken-public/ 2020 Coronavirus COVID – 19 This crisis is particularly difficult for us today because we cannot work on the field, directly with children. This crisis requires us to distance ourselves from the outside world and find creative solutions of how to maintain the warmth of human interactions while being socially distant. How to help someone from home, but also directly, in the field when it is necessary, how to find out who needs help? And every day we discover that we can, that we are here for each other, that Megjashi's work continues, whatever the circumstances. Due to the state of emergency, the First Children's Embassy in the World MEGJASHI provided: - protective equipment for medical personnel working with children; - humanitarian aid in food and hygiene products for marginalised groups; - educational contents intended for the youngest with the mascot of Megjashi “Bushavko” (Britsly – Shaggy); - started a platform / FB group on the topic "HOME TOGETHER" in order to encourage creative and quality time spent with children in a state of pandemic. We continuously remind that isolation due to coronavirus is an opportunity for adults to use their time with their children in an interesting manner, filled with creative and educational contents, in order for children to feel supported, to understand the information they hear more easily, to be informed accordingly at their age, but not being overwhelmed by everything that happens. We want to encourage to sharing games, knowledge, humour, songs, drawings, short videos, photos... The Maggie Story
It’s long awaited. Sorry it took so long, it’s a lot. 5,613 words a lot. But it’s what happened.
As always, thanks for caring y’all.
So I’m not really sure where to begin this… I guess I’ll start at where The Stevie Story left off last August.
Okay so after Stevie left and Maggie moved into the master bedroom… We lived a charmed life. When Maggie didn’t work at 6 AM, I would wake up early enough to say bye to her when she went to work and then I’d go about my life at home and she’d come home and dish with me about her life and we’d watch TV until she went to bed and then I’d watch TV in the living room and then go to bed and then we’d do it all over again. I posted last year that I was happy and that this was really working. Honestly, I’d found a fucking best friend. She was amazing… WE were amazing.
In October, Jasper moved upstairs. He and Simon broke up (thank god that took a long fucking time) and then he moved in with Maggie and I. He slept on the couch from late October - early January when we moved. In December, we found a three bedroom house (that I’m currently in) and moved here in early January. For months, we functioned really well as a household. The three of us worked super well together. Maggie and I split driving Jasper to and from work and we did really well. Good life. Honestly.
And here’s where things get muddled.. I’m going to be honest with y’all… I do not know what happened. I do not actually understand. All I know is my perception of four different breakdown points… Which I have broken down by name.
The Dog
When we started looking for houses in November last year, Jasper and I remarked that we wanted a dog. We saw houses with fenced in back yards and we knew that we wanted a house with a fenced yard specifically because we wanted a dog. I really wanted a house outside of the city limits (this one is) so we could have a fire pit out back, a fireplace inside, and a fenced yard for a dog. That’s all I wanted from a house. This one was the first (and only) house we looked at and it ticked all three boxes… and was also a great price… So we just… went ahead with it.
I want to reiterate.. the plan was always to get a dog.
Initially, the plan was to wait until spring… When we’d settled in a few months. Then the plan was mid spring. Then late spring. And finally… Early summer. Well early summer got here and we set out to get a dog.
I gotta pick up this story of the dog until after I talk about the next bit so it will make sense.
West
Okay, so West is Jasper’s boyfriend. They have a weird past I’m not going to bore you with but essentially West came to visit as Jasper’s friend because they recently reconnected and then that quickly turned into something else upon arrival. Anyway… West has lived with his family his whole life and he didn’t want to go back to Texas and Jasper didn’t want him to leave.. so he asked Maggie and I if we were okay if West moved in.
Jasper gave Maggie several outs. They had multiple one on one conversations in which Jasper was like “I will not be upset if you are not on board with this or don’t want this” and Maggie was excited and enthusiastic.
West went back to Texas after two(ish) weeks to pack stuff to move. He left his car here in our driveway and flew (fun facts, dropping him off at the airport is when my car died - which is a later point) and then flew back.
Before he got back, Maggie was driving me somewhere and she asked me if I thought West was really going to move in. I told her I saw no reason why not.
Now… It is my theory that she did not want West to move in… But she didn’t want to be the person who said no. So she said she was okay with it repeatedly even though Jasper told her she didn’t have to. She figured she could say “yes,” and something would come up and she could play sympathetic and then be like “I mean things will turn out for the best” blah blah blah. This is my theory.
At any rate, West moved in and she was never particularly kind to him or seemed interested in him as a person.
That leads us too…..
The Dog: Part 2
Shortly after West got back from Texas and moved in, the dog became a reality. Originally, we were going to the shelter just to look. It was the summer solstice, the 21st of June. Jasper and West took me to therapy and we were going to go to the rose garden after for me to get flowers for my celebration of Aphrodisia… While I was in therapy, they got the idea for us to go to the shelter and look at dogs. We found a babe who we loved deeply and decided to adopt him. We told Maggie and she said she was uncomfortable living in a house with a dog without a pet deposit paid for said dog. When we moved in, we paid 2 pet deposits over the course of 2 months along with rent, and we figured it would be easier to do if we could pay the one over the course of several months too. So I asked. Then on Friday, Jasper went and paid to adopt the dog.
At no point in this did Maggie say she was not on board. Well.. That’s a lie. She told West at one point, but refused to tell me and Jasper. In her mind, her passive aggressive actions (which she now claims weren’t passive aggressive) should have been enough.
She did, however, tell Jasper she wanted to be left out of it. That she didn’t want to be responsible for the dog and she didn’t want the dog to be something she had to focus on or worry about. This is important….. Because, SPOILER ALERT, she didn’t actually mean that.
So they fix the dog and tell us we can pick him up on Monday the 26th. Monday comes, I get an email that says the pet deposit has to be paid all at once. We figure we’ll pay it along with July’s rent.
Meanwhile, when we were clearing the back yard in preparation for the dog, we found what looked exactly like termites in a piece of wood out back.. So I had called to ask about getting the house inspected.
So then on Tuesday, I get a call from the property manager asking if we can be there on Wednesday at 4 because the terminix guy needed someone to be there when he came. I said yes. He also informed me the owner of the house was requesting a $500 pet deposit for the dog since we already had two cats. I said “okay…” and then hung up the phone and grabbed the lease to see if there was a clause that I skipped over before I initially emailed about the pet deposit the week before, before a dog had been paid for. I found no such clause and called back to ask how that was legal. I got no response.
He also said the owner of the house was requesting size and breed. The dog we adopted was an American Staffordshire. We adopted him specifically because there was nothing in the lease about breed or restriction based on breed. We knew though if they were all the sudden asking for a $500 pet deposit when the first two were $200, the second we said the breed, they’d say no. So we tried to figure out what to do. I called my dad and asked if the dog could stay with him for a while for the duration of Maggie still living with us so that we could take him back into our home after there was no one to insist on communication with the landlord.
On top of that, I have fought the landlord tooth and nail about the back deck, which is falling apart and unsafe. I have requested it be fixed multiple times and the maintenance guy said he’s been telling them to rebuild it for years. They committed to rebuilding, but I have seen no progress beyond a man coming out to get a “quote” in May who said he was told the job would happen in June. Which it did not. So because of that and the concern of termites, we thought that maybe the random increase in pet deposit was a push back on us for being pushy tenants. So we wanted to be more careful about what we communicated to the landlord because we didn’t want to rock an already rocked boat.
So my dad said that he’d take the dog. West and I brought the dog to dad’s house because Jasper was sick. While we were there, Xena did her Xena thing and made a problem out of nothing. Dad said he wasn’t going to keep the dog for long. Xena kept bitching and it just seemed like the only option we had that wouldn’t destroy us with anxiety would be to take the dog back to the shelter.
The shelter does a 3 day grace period where you can get your money back. So this was Wednesday, Thursday was the last day for Jasper to get the $93 he paid back. So we take the dog home with the intention of taking him back to the shelter the following day.
We get home at about 1 or 2. At 3, I get 10 texts from Xena apologizing. She said she messed up and that dog did not deserve to be in a shelter and she wouldn’t bitch about it, that we should bring him back. I confirmed with dad that that was okay and we made plans to bring him back after the terminix guy left.
Terminix guy gets to the house around 4:45 and says that he was told the property manager would meet him at the house. This freaks the everloving fuck out of me, West, and Jasper because we already assumed the landlord was pissed at us and was trying to check up. Maggie walks in and tells us that the guy said he was waiting for the property manager and I’m like “oh shit.” Maggie asks if we’ve paid the pet deposit. I try to explain to her what’s gone on the past two days and what we’re planning for when the guy leaves.. But she was having N O N E of it. She refused to listen and called us irresponsible and said that what we did was “fucked up” as if we had done something specifically to her.
I go out to talk to terminix guy to get a clearer picture on what’s going on and he said not to worry and that if I hadn’t heard from the property manager he would be there, there was probably a mix up in communication between property manager and terminix guy’s boss.
He leaves and West, Jasper, and I take the dog to my dad’s house.
On Thursday night, my dad calls me and tells me that our dog was having issues with his dog and he didn’t feel safe having him around. We went and picked him up on Friday and took him back to the shelter… One day past the refund deadline. (Update: the website shows he got adopted again today!!! I’m so happy!!)
We had that dog for one business week. 5 days. Adopted on Monday, surrendered on Friday.
Maggie, was pissed. She insists even still that we should have kept her in the loop about the pet deposit stuff and that we should have paid it first before adopting the dog. I told her that no one I know in my life has ever paid a pet deposit after moving in and we all assumed we’d give it to them on top of rent when we turned that in. She said that everyone she knows had done this before, which excuse me, feels like a lie.
This all set us up for
The Cats
So when we moved in in January, Jasper and I each paid a pet deposit. Maggie was on board with this. At the time, Jasper didn’t have a pet.. He was paying half the pet deposits upon move in because he would be getting a cat shortly after moving in and both wanted to take responsibility for his cat and get that out of the way and take the burden off of me.
On January 25, Jasper and I went to the animal shelter “to look around.” We found a cat who we loved a lot who was available to come home same day.. and we came home that day with Roscoe.
Now, I don’t remember Maggie being upset about Roscoe but Jasper assures me she wasn’t entirely on board. I believe him. Anyway… so Roscoe’s been in our house in January 25. And up until the dog, Maggie seemed to have absolutely no problem with the pet deposit. When she said she wasn’t comfortable living in a house with a dog without a pet deposit paid, she said “We already have one cat that’s not paid for.” That was the very first either me or Jasper had heard of discomfort on her end for the way the pet deposit was handled.
When Maggie got home the chaotic Wednesday night when we took the dog to my dad’s twice… She sat down to talk. I explained to her what happened and everything I was trying to explain to her earlier before she’d stormed out. She was suddenly somehow okay that we were handling it and said she wish she had known all of that… To which I was like “I tried to tell you, but you refused to listen.” Anyway, during that conversation, she said that she was no longer comfortable having three cats with only two pet deposits. I asked what changed and she said “Having three cats themselves is not a problem… But they make a problem worse if a problem exists.” Since we took the dog back on Friday, from my perspective, there should have been no problem.
At any rate, on Thursday, when the dog was at my dad’s before dad said he couldn’t keep him, I emailed the property manager and asked him how much it would be and what the process looks like for a third cat. He was out of the office and replied to me on Monday the 3rd after the dog was gone. He told me that the owner was requesting $500 for any third pet because they were under the impression that we paid $500/pet when we moved in.
He communicated to me VIA EMAIL (aka IN WRITING) that the management company did not communicate with the owner properly when writing the lease.
Had they communicated the way they should have and we were told when we looked at the house and inquired about the pet deposit that it was $500/pet, we wouldn’t have moved here.
Now, I just want to mention it’s obvious the owner of this house does not give two fucks of a shit what shape it’s in. They care about getting money. The house is falling apart, there are holes everywhere and no matter how much I call and ask them to fix basic things like the bottom of the back doorway which is falling apart due to wood rot that appears to have been glued in place before, nothing happens. Like… It’s clear that this house was bought specifically as a rental unit and the owners of the house have actually no mind or care to the shape of the house… So I can tell that the $500 pet deposit is not because they care that much about the house, but rather because they care that much about making money.
At any rate it’s a ridiculous number for this neighborhood and for a cat. It’s absurd. And everyone I talk to has advised me expressly NOT to pay it because it’s a ridiculous number and because the two parts that make up my landlord do not agree on what is reasonable.
Anyway… So when I get that email, I say in the group chat what’s going on and I say that if they had communicated $500/pet when we moved in, we wouldn’t have moved here. Jasper says he feels that. I say I’m skeeved out that the management company and owner didn’t communicate. Jasper says that sounds sketch and he feels paranoid that they’re just trying to get even more money out of us. I say that’s what my mom said and I kind of agree. I also say that I’ve talked to a lot of people and 200 is standard.
Then Maggie replies. I’m just going to copy and paste her response because I can’t capture the condescending tone of her communicating about money through my description alone. (Note: She was out of town for 4th of July weekend and came back mid-day on the 4th) “That's what they're in the business of. Don't worry about it too much. I'm going to be home tomorrow so we'll talk about it. Unfortunately there's no standard. Pet deposits have to be "reasonable" which there's no set number for. Even added up, the security deposit and pet deposits are no more than 2x the rent so it's still considered reasonable.”
I was SO PISSED she tried to rich-splain to me “standard pet deposit.” So I replied sharply “I meant standard as in "this is what is defaulted to." Not that there was a specific number.” and then “As in "Everyone I talked to has had a pet deposit around 200-250"” I’m still pissed she tried to rich-splain that to me. GOD I know my shit.
Anyway, because Jasper had paid a pet deposit and he had a cat and I paid a pet deposit and I had two cats, the cat in question was mine. I know my dad and sister love Stacey so I called them to make sure it was okay that she go live with them until Maggie leaves if need be. They say yes, but they hope stuff gets figured out so that doesn’t have to happen. I do too.
Everything
(This next bit is just a straight up story of what happened. It involves everything. There’s another part “inconveniences.” after this story, but I had to put this story here for the purposes of narrative flow)
West, Jasper, and I decide to get wine drunk that night to celebrate our last day of freedom before she comes home as we ring in the 4th. West chugs some wine and gets way too drunk and is having panic attacks while throwing up… Jasper and I call the paramedics to try to figure out how to get him to breathe… Bad night.
Maggie gets home on the 4th and I tell her what happened the night before and she says that it’s not a good time to talk and I confirm that it is not. The next day, she insists on forcing the conversation.
That conversation still fucks with my head.
So she said it was “messed up” what we “did to her” not telling her about the dog. Now… remember when I was talking about the dog when I said that she didn’t want to be responsible and have anything to do with the dog? She said the words “leave me out of it” to Jasper? Yeah… Remember when I told you she didn’t mean that? Yeah… This is what I meant by “she didn’t mean that.” She comes at us saying it was “messed up” that we didn’t tell her the second something was wrong and I was like “we were handling it ourselves because you didn’t want to be a part of it! You said “leave me out of it” and so we did!” and she was like “I didn’t mean leave me out of everything. I said I wanted the pet deposit paid!” and I was like “Okay and we were doing that Maggie! Like you cannot expect us to read your mind! You said you wanted to be left out, so we left you out!!”
We went back and forth like that for a while before I told her I didn’t know what I was doing with the pet deposit. She got upset with me because we didn’t pay it first and I was like “I thought we’d pay it with rent” like we did ORIGINALLY! And I told her that no one in my life has paid a pet deposit post moving in.
And then she said that everyone in her life had (I do not believe this) and they all advised her to get out of this situation quick because what we did was “so messed up.” Do you see the over the top dramatics for no reason? Yeah.. Me too.
I’m telling y’all.. this conversation was so unnecessarily dramatic. But then again, everything with Maggie has been unnecessarily dramatic for the past month and a half. It’s just… Wild.. how dramatic she is. And she thinks I’m the dramatic one… I’m exaggerated with enthusiasm and I live for online drama… I’m not dramatic in my personal relationships. Not like she’d care though...
Anyway… so I say that no one in my life has seen it as messed up in a tone that’s like “oookkkaayyyy I didn’t ask….” and then she cuts me off..
Which by the way, she wouldn’t let me finish my sentence when I first started talking.. She was talking and then I let her finish and then I went to respond and she kept cutting me off and I was like “I’d like to finish my sentence please” and she’d stop talking and then cut me off again and I would let her finish and say “Okay, well I’m going to finish my sentence now” and eventually I snapped at her “Can I finish a sentence or do you just want to talk?” Like bish would not hush for half a second and let someone else speak and I almost leaped across the room at her if I’m honest..
So anyway she cuts me off and says “We know different people” and I’m thinking “no shit, I know normal and poor people and you know rich people and newly licensed lawyers.” But I don’t say that because I don’t want to have the classism fight (though let me tell you this girl is PRIVILEGED). So I say “Yeah I know and I’m telling you I handled this the best I could but you have to understand I don’t know what I’m doing and no one I usually turn to for help knows what they’re doing either!”
Of course, she didn’t understand because heaven forbid she think about something through someone else’s perspective!!
Anyway and also in that conversation was the topic of West. She said she wanted him on the lease but he’s not comfortable with that so I was like “Okay we West doesn’t want to be on the lease” and she was like “If our property manager found out that West was here, they’d be furious!” and I was like “How do you know?” Because most places do not actually care. It’s not “””allowed””” to have a non-leaseholder stay in your rented place of living, but most landlords do not actually care. As long as the leaseholders are still paying rent and understand they are taking responsibility for the actions of the non-leased person. Meaning.. if that person does something worthy of eviction, the leaseholders are getting evicted and that goes on their record. If the non-leased person destroys the property, the leaseholders are paying for it. Most landlords don’t care as long as we (the leaseholders) are okay with that. Which we were. Except Maggie.
So I say “How do you know?” and she says “Because they can’t evict him!” and I’m like “No, they’d evict us. That’s how it works.” and she’s like “Yeah, they’d evict us if they knew he was here because they can’t evict him” and I’m like “How do you know they care enough to make this a problem” and she was like “what?” and I was like “some people are more lenient than others and our lease says nothing about visitors so how do you know?” and she just was so confused and I said “Did you ask?” and she was like “How do you ask?” and I was like “Hey, we have a friend from out of town who’s looking to move to Raleigh.. Would it be alright if he stayed in our house for a while while he got situated?” She was so Shook™ that you could ask that. She agreed to ask about it.
Well anyway after that, she says that she wouldn’t have a problem with the cats or West if this wasn’t going to come back to bite her in the butt (again, dramatics). She insisted that because this was “””technically illegal””” it could come back to her and she could be responsible for our “”””illegal behavior”””” or some shit like that. So she said she wanted off the lease but she didn’t know how to do that without screwing us over… Which like…..
So here come more random dramatics. She’s got this thing where when a problem arises, she jumps to the most difficult possible solution and no other solution is considered. It’s not that she refutes other solutions, it’s that she legitimately doesn’t consider them. So with the lease, she figured we’d have to break and terminate the lease entirely and then Jasper and I would re-apply for this same house and sign a new lease. I said “Why don’t we just sign a piece of paper and take you off of it” and she’s like “that’s not how it works” and I’m like “????” So I said “why don’t we ask?” She again acted like that was the most wild thing in the world… To ask a question… Like omg you don’t know something… ASK ABOUT IT! why is that a wild other-worldy suggestion to you????
Anyway… So the next day (Friday the 6th), I ditch work to go to the management office with her in the morning to ask about the paper. They say they’ll write it up on Monday morning and she can pick it up when she leaves work. So she plans to do that. She tells us she’ll give us rent for the remainder of the lease… Five months…
Now that’s a lot… And way more than we were going to ask for. Which I told her. And she still gave it to us… Which is so wild to me.
So she brings the paper, I don’t want to sign it until I have reassurance she’ll give the money she says she’ll give.. or at least August rent… She agrees to meet me at the place the next day (Wednesday) to sign it with a check in her hand. She also tells me she’s not ready to consider still being friends because we “hurt her feelings” with the dog drama. I do not for the life of me understand how she can still be dramatic about it considering it was a mess and there IS NO DOG but………. she can be! We argued and talked over stuff and I basically told her that like… I can’t read her mind! So if she has something to say living with other adults, she’s got to say it! She says repeatedly it didn’t feel like she could and I’m like “??? You say something if you’re not comfortable! Like of course you can! We’re not going to act like something’s wrong if you don’t tell us so we’re not going to ask you you gotta say something!” And then I recalled that I DID ASK HER about her negative feelings about the dog and she brushed it off and pretended it was nothing WHEN IT WASN’T! I reminded her that none of us can read her mind and we’re not responsible for her shitty communication.
That’s our personal stuff up to now… ish. There’s one more category…
Inconveniences
This is actually what happened first chronologically… But it’s background to the drama of everything else, so I saved it for last. It’s also probably the driving force of why all of that stuff was so dramatic.
So around the time West moved in, things with Maggie got a little… weird. I’m honestly not sure when it started… But I know I noticed it when West went back to Texas for that little bit. She was hanging out a lot with this guy she was seeing and her former roommate and friend from college… and when she was home she was really… short with me. I thought maybe I was exaggerating it though.
Then West came back and he noticed it. There was one day in particular… Maggie had been asking me to rake the back yard for months honestly and I tried but I had so much anxiety about it because it was way too big a task for one person and I have the physical limitations of my back and it’s hard on your back and we didn’t have an appropriate rake.. But West felt bad sitting at home doing nothing so he went to do the yard so he didn’t feel useless. One day he got stung. The next day he didn’t do really anything, just swept the porch and I also didn’t do much of anything. We sat in the living room all day talking and watching Kitchen Nightmares. We applied for jobs and sat in our unemployed misery of boredom and not feeling useful. When Maggie got home, I had just gotten my computer for the first time that day maybe 20 minutes prior. She sat down and asked how our day was. West told her he didn’t do much on the backyard. As he finished saying that, I saw something funny on tumblr and told the room about it. She scoffed and said “Is this all you’ve done today? Sit on tumblr?” West and I both insisted that it wasn’t and that I had just gotten my computer… which was true. She scoffed again and said “alright….”
Later that night, Jasper gets home. He’s gotten two pieces of mail. A bill from Planned Parenthood and a small package. I ask what it is, referring to the small package. He plays with me and says “a bill!” and I’m like “that’s not the interesting part.” We banter and such and I push and he plays hard to get and says “Just for that, I’m gonna open it upstairs!” And he goes upstairs. Mind you, he’s just playing. Maggie snaps at me and says “It’s none of your business. It’s his mail! I don’t tell you everything about my life!” I look at her and say “I was only joking, you don’t have to be so mean.” Then I get up, go to my room (which is right there - they are right outside the door at the kitchen table) and cry. I come out, get my diet coke, and go back in my room. I felt fucking terrible.
A little while later West and Jasper are going to Walmart and I go with them and West says he noticed she’s mean to me and it’s not in my head and that I had a right to be upset.
So then I start freaking out because I don’t know why she’s mad at me. I decide it’s probably because I owe her money. I had borrowed money to pay the rent because my dad couldn’t afford to help that month and hadn’t been forthcoming with that until it was the day rent was due. She had said it was fine if it was for the rent, but then acted off to me ever since. I also figured it was because I’m such a big personality and that frustrated her. I don’t know…
Anyway, my therapist and I planned how to talk to her about it. So then I do. I tell her that we gotta talk and she says that she’s just felt off and it wasn’t me and I shouldn’t feel responsible. I let that go. Then the whole thing with the dog happens and I go to talk to her again and I tell her that I know there’s something off about our friendship and I don’t want to lose a friend because of all of this stupid crap. We talk through it… It was the money…. and the big personality… It was kind of everything… But mostly it was class differences. As a rich person, she just never understood me. And she never wanted to.
At any rate, I lost a friend for absolutely no reason and it came out of nowhere and I still do not know what inspired it…. But this………. This is The Maggie Story. West came to visit at the end of May, so this is what defined the month of June for me.
What a ride.

ep. 33: I got Bringing Up Baby (with Wendy Mays from Pet Cinematary!)
We shoulda done this episode in our Katharine Hepburn voices, ‘cause we’re talking as fast as we can to keep up with Howard Hawks over here! Wendy Mays of the Pet Cinematary podcast (#LadyPodSquad) joins us for a conversation about the 1938 classic screwball comedy Bringing Up Baby, starring Hepburn and Cary Grant and directed by Howard Hawks. Listen in as we attempt to explain (and remember) this crazy plot, tell silly stories from the set, and dive into Hepburn’s role as one of the earliest Manic Pixie Dream Girls in cinema.
Is Baby a human baby? (Nope.) Do Luke and Lorelai have a Grant and Hepburn dynamic? (Yep.) Would Kyla, Taylor, and Wendy like to hang out with a leopard? (Debatable.) You’ll never know if you don’t listen in—feel free to turn it up to 1.5 speed to make us sound like Hepburn!

Paul “SHIELD” Corentin
My name is Paul Corentin, and my life has been a series of discoveries. When I was 12 my friend and I had the brilliant idea to show off our knife throwing skills by attempting to impale an apple resting on my head. We even taped it for Youtube. Thankfully, I must have an exceptionally thick head, because somehow the knife tip just bounced off my forehead.
We posted it, but no one believed it. People tried to point out where the green screen was. No matter what we said, no one believed us. This led to the second discovery, it’s not just my head that’s hard.
My friend Donny Corven was trying to convince a guy at our school that the video was real. The guy was one of the meanest bullies at our school though. The bully, Jeff, started smacking him around, I couldn’t let that happen. So I surprised Jeff with a push.
Obviously, Jeff didn’t take that well. I wasn’t a fighter at the time, Jeff was. Donny actually knew how to fight because of his dad, but Jeff was double our size. Jeff hit me with a right cross and a hit to the gut. This was the second discovery. I took the blows but barely felt them.
I didn’t even double over. That ticked Jeff off and he spent 10 minutes pounding on me to no avail. I tried to fight back, but he swatted my attacks away like I was a fly. Donny didn’t fare as well. He landed a few good blows, but Jeff laid him out rather quickly.
That’s what hurt me, my friend getting hurt and I was powerless to stop it. A teacher finally broke up the fight and sent Jeff and me to the principal's office. Donny was taken to the nurse. The principal gave us a choice, take licks, or get suspended.
I’d never seen Jeff so worried, and for good reason. If he got another suspension, he would be expelled for the year, and have to repeat the eighth grade. The flip side of that was that our principal used to be the baseball coach. He was known for having a powerful swing with a bat and a paddle.
Jeff tearfully accepted the paddle, the suspension wouldn’t have hurt me that much, but I was actually curious how tough I was. Jeff screamed and cried with every strike. I laughed and stared at him with what felt like a strong thumping. I could see the burning hate building up in his eyes.
I decided at that point, that I was going to learn to fight, so that people like Jeff would be the one on the ground next time, instead of Donny.
I immediately found Donny and asked if his dad could teach me to fight. His dad was happy to, but also droned on and on about the whole you shouldn’t fight unless you absolutely have to shtick.
We trained together every day after school. We were taught to box first. Donny was definitely the better fighter, he had had many more years of experience with his dad. But I typically won, simply because he couldn’t hurt me. I took headshot after headshot and never once got woozy. I simply waited until he ran out of stamina and let his guard down.
The next discovery was on Donny’s part. He refuses to tell me the entire story, but something happened when he and his dad went to a boxing match out of town. Donny came back, his dad didn’t. After that, Donny didn’t want to spar anymore, and he got distant for a while.
I refused to stop learning though. I started cutting lawns to earn enough money to take karate, self-defense, judo, Akito, and whatever other fighting classes I could find. I even got on the sparring team at our school. I was undefeated.
On the night of a competition, a shady guy asked if I wanted to make some extra money with my skills. I said sure, and he gave me an address. It was an abandoned warehouse where an underground fight club was happening. The only rules here were no weapons and don’t kill anyone. This was the first time I felt pain, but my opponents felt much more.
I fought every Friday night and left with $500 bucks every time. After a year of this, I was undefeated. One night a group of guys who had lost a lot of money betting on my fights had enough. They jumped me with bats and knives in the parking lot.
I didn’t get out of there unscathed, but they were much worse off than I was. I had some bruises and a couple of minor cuts. They had broken bones, concussions, and a fair amount of blood loss. I stopped feeling sympathy for my opponents after that night. And I had an even great hatred of bullies.
I started looking for bullies at school. I would catch one beating up classmates and show them the error of their ways. I would step up do a massive amount of damage, and then get out of there before anyone saw. After three months of this, the school finally installed cameras to catch me.
That was actually really beneficial at first. It even made the bullies stop, at least while they were on school property. They moved their activities off grounds, and so did I. I became the bully of bullies.
After high school, I started fighting nightly. I told my parents that I got a night shift job so that they wouldn’t worry. During the day I would sleep and train, at night I would beat the mess out of people.
I ended up being a victim of my own success though. No one would bet against me, and the pool of fighters that would test me shrank. The organizers started scheduling me for one night a week when they would have the best fighter go up against me. When that got boring to the crowds, they started sending me up against two and three guys at a time.
I decided to walk away when they wanted me to fight several feral dogs at once. My pay had gotten pathetic too. They offered me a job shaking people down for their lost bets, but I said no. I thought about going to college, but no degree brought the same kind of thrill as fighting in the ring.
I briefly entertained the idea of becoming a masked superhero like the ones that started appearing around the world. But that wouldn’t pay the bills, and I was afraid to test if I was bulletproof as well.
By luck or fate or whatever, I happened across news that Donny was opening up an MMA gym. That was a style of fighting that I hadn’t gotten to try yet. I swung by the gym and started talking to him. It was weird, it was like we picked right back up where we left off.
As luck would have it he was looking for someone to teach some alternate classes. The main focus of the gym was MMA, but he thought to diversify with other styles of fighting would bring in more business.
As an added bonus, he offered to teach me how to fight MMA. I jumped on that opportunity, and almost regretted it after a week. First of all, I had to relearn to fight legitimately. When I was fighting illegally, any kind of dirty trick you could imagine was fair game.
On top of that my form was sloppy because it had never really mattered that much if I got hit. It still didn’t really, but if I was going to take Donny’s class, he demanded that we do it right. The other challenge came from the strength training he put me through.
I was typically content with the strength I gained through my constant fighting, but Donny showed me a more rounded approach. I could barely walk after most of these workouts. But after three months, I was hitting harder, moving faster, and no one could break my grapples.
In the midst of all of this, I noticed that Donny refused to spar or touch anyone. He also wore gloves and long sleeves even in the summer. I asked him about it once, and he shrugged the question off with a joke about not wanting to get our sweat on his skin.
I found out the truth a few months after I started competing professionally with the gym as my sponsor. I had had a successful career all the way up until my next match was with Jeff, the bully from high school. His family moved away before I ever got my revenge on him.
I had also heard stories that he liked to break the rules in the ring. He kept pounding his opponents long after they were out. There were also rumors that he had attacked a few of the fighters, in the parking lot, that he had lost to in the ring. There was a laundry list of other grievances that told me that he had never changed.
I saw myself as his reckoning. In the ring, I beat him handily. The only problem was that I kept beating him on the ground. The ref tried to pull me off, and I knocked him out before continuing to hit Jeff. He begged for mercy, and I kept pounding on him.
I saw red, and he was the totem for every bully I had ever dealt with in my life. I probably would have killed him, but then I felt a cold hand touch my cheek. My body went cold and I felt the strength drain out of me. My vision went black even before I hit the ground.
When I woke up Donny was there. He explained that Jeff was in a coma, and it took a lot of fast talking to keep the police from arresting me. I had been banned from competing for a year though.
In my mind, the damage I inflicted was worth it though. But then Donny started speaking to me about my pent up rage. He knew things about me that I tried not to even admit to myself. Then he helped me to understand that people are more than just the bad things they do.
By the end of our conversation, I was weeping. I had been fighting everyone for so long. I let my soul get as tough as my skin. I believed in justice so strongly, that I had abandoned mercy. I needed a balance of both.
Then a voice spoke out of the shadows of the room and said, “That’s good to hear because I really hate having to arrest mutants when their abilities can be put to much better use.”
I was actually the only one to jump in surprise. Donny explained, “This is Agent Thompson with SHIELD. There is a lot that we need to get you caught up on.”
They proceeded to explain mutants and Donny’s powers to me. Donny had been working for S.H.I.E.L.D for years now. S.H.I.E.L.D had also been keeping an eye on me for nearly just as long. They wanted Donny to focus me before they considered recruiting.
I didn’t believe them at first, then I joked about the stupidity of the idea of us being superheroes. Running around in spandex fighting crime. They said that they were recruiting me to be a special agent of S.H.I.E.L.D, not a superhero.
I don’t know why I said yes, I just felt I needed to, and so I did. That was when I went through the hardest training of my life. Paperwork and laws.

Beans for good: youth start-up aims to change the world through coffee
The idea came to then-UNSW engineering students Small and Smith after they completed a summer course at Gulu University in Uganda. There they met local agricultural student Daniel Okinong, who encouraged them to try Mount Elgon coffee. They brought some of the beans back to Australia and had them tested for specialty grading. They passed.

What can we do with this to create positive social change, across borders and with a strong environmental focus?, Smith says. They pitched the idea to UNSW Engineering, which granted them $8,000. Named for a region in Uganda, Bugisu has received $20,000 in donations through UNSW Philanthropy, including personal donations from UNSW Chancellor David Gonski and Vice Chancellor Ian Jacobs. Bugisu took part in two pre-accelerator and mentorship programs with UNSW Innovation, which provided the project with free training, development assistance and ongoing support. Bugisus four directors (Smith, Small, Wang and Kerr) have invested a total of $10,000 and somewhere between 500-600 standard working days into the project since mid-2017, Small says.
Wang, Smith and Kerr are seeking to create a social-enterprise business that feeds back to Uganda-based charities.Credit:Wolter Peeters A Mount Elgon coffee-farmers union supplies the beans, which are imported green to Sydney. After being roasted by Banksmeadows Neoma Coffee, the beans are packed in reusable aluminium canisters, which are delivered to workplaces. (Currently, Bugisu supplies six businesses, including Canva, Tzannes, VivCourt and Finder. Cafes are in the pipeline.) Bugisu is working with Raise the Bar to turn the grounds into a pump-ablehand-soap; the remaining grounds are used for compost. Its a way to change business mindsets around the way we consume products, Small says of the closed-loop, circular economy approach. Were trying to turn an everyday products waste into another product that we can use every day. All profits go to Ugandan charity Love Mercys Cents for Seeds micro-loan program. Bugisu Project coffee sells for $40 per kilogram; a minimum of $5 -- plus all profits -- circles back to Uganda, with at least one woman entering the program for every six kilograms sold.

Were essentially bootstrapping it, Small says. The six of us have committed to this year as growing professionally through starting a social enterprise, and by 2020 to be a fully-functioning business. Bugisu is targeting $150,000 in turnover by the end of this year. Their goal is to be supplying beans to 500 businesses in five years. At that point, weve got an option to replicate it in a city like Melbourne or package it up, Small says. There are all the elements to make it work in a city like Hong Kong or Vancouver. CANTLON: PACK VANQUISH DEVILS IN OT
BY: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings HARTFORD, CT - John Gilmour’s overtime breakaway goal, his second of the game, allowed the Hartford Wolf Pack to escape with a 4-3 victory over the Binghampton Devils at the XL Center Wednesday night. The Devils' Josh Jacobs lost control of the puck at the right point. Gilmour was right there to collect the loose puck and, while playing three-on-three, and with room to operate, and with his tremendous speed, nobody was going to catch Gilmour. Gilmour charged in on Cam Johnson and slipped his 20th of the season through the five-hole. He is the third Wolf Pack player this season to hit the 20-goal mark. The goal came at the 2:20 mark of overtime and gave Hartford the win and two points. “Certainly, we would like to close these games out a little earlier, so we went to overtime, but as long as we're getting the results (a win) we're a happy bunch," Gilmour said. Gilmour wasn’t going to mess with success. He went with the breakaway move he's most comfortable with and that's helped him tally his fifth game-winner,l tops on the team. “That was a bit of a gift and I had some space and went with the move I’ve been using,” Gilmour remarked with a laugh. "I had that all planned out once I touched the puck,”. For the Pack's head coach, Keith McCambridge, Gilmour is the go-to guy right now. “He has the ability to pull away from his checks when he has that much room to skate and he can finish for us. He’s playing great hockey for us right now. When trailing from behind, John is the guy you want hopping over the boards for you. He can score a goal and the trust is there for him defensively." Gilmour has 12 points in his last six games and is the leading point-getter for all AHL defenseman with 51. The Wolf Pack record improves to 27-28-6-3 (63 points) and has them in eighth place in the Atlantic Division. They trail the Springfield Thunderbirds by one point and are nine behind the fourth place Providence Bruins. Binghamton sees their record drop to 24-34-6-0 (54 points). They sit in eighth place in the North Division six points behind the Laval Rocket. The Wolf Pack used the powerplay to perfection in tying the game at three just past the midway point of the third period. While in a four-on-three situation, McCambridge wisely took their timeout. Off the ensuing face-off, the Wolf Pack were able to light the lamp in just seven seconds. “Crucial moment in the game," McCambridge said. "We had the chance to calm things down. We got the chance to do what we wanted to on that powerplay, and Vinni (Lettieri), of course, is a big piece of our powerplay. He can shot that puck. It was quite evident there.” Tim Gettinger won the draw and got the puck back to Gilmour at the right point. Gilmour, in turn, hit the ever-dangerous Lettieri with a diagonal pass. Lettieri then wired his patented shot from the left wing circle for his team-leading 22nd goal at 11:17. The Pack seems to never take the easy path as evident in parts of the third period. Goaltender Brendan Halverson had to make several key saves to prevent Binghamton from establishing a two-goal lead. He also took his high wire act early when he handled the puck and it nearly went in the back of the net. Once again, a Wolf Pack opponent scored early in the second period and gained the momentum and had traction after a well-played first period. Ex-Pack, Alex Krushelnyski, tallied his first of the season. Nick Sorkin was on the left wing side behind the net. He took a pass from Sam Kurker and reversed direction on Pack defenseman Julius Bergman. Brendon Crawley then left his spot to go play him and fell down. Sorkin sent a pass to Krushelnyski, who wasn’t picked up by Gabriel Fontaine and zipped his first AHL goal of the season low to the stick-side to tie the game at one. “We got a little too happy and comfortable there (early in the second period). You can’t take your foot off the gas pedal in this league. You saw that (early) in the second and part of third as well," McCambridge said. The Devils made it 2-1 as they used their second powerplay to take the lead. Ryan Schmelzer was deep in the right-wing corner and got Ryan Lindgren to come to him. That left Nick Saracino alone in front. Schmelzer had the time to take the pass, turn to face Halverson. His first attempt was stopped, but he got to the rebound and jammed it in for his fourth goal of the season. “We got away from what we were doing in the first, cheating and cutting corners, but over a matter of time, we got back to what we do best and came out on top,” said Steven Fogarty. The Wolf Pack used their second powerplay to tie it but did their damnedest not to. The first 1:30 of the man advantage was simply atrocious until McCambridge put out his top PP unit and competency set in. Ryan Gropp did a good job gaining the offensive zone with a strong rush down the right. He then passed to Fogarty, who made a quick snapshot/pass. With Gettinger setup in front, the puck went off his stick blade, deflected off his stick shaft and then over the shoulder of Devils' goalie, Cam Johnson. The goal was his 13th of the year and came at 13:14 with just two seconds remaining on the powerplay. “I saw him and I tried a fake pass/shot kinda thing, and fortunately he got his stick on it for a good tip,” said Fogarty. The Devils though ended the period with a goal. The Pack's defense got all tangled up allowing Egor Sharangovich to get behind Darren Raddysh who pulled him down as they crashed into Halverson. The ref immediately signaled for a penalty shot, but they reviewed the play first to see if the puck crossed the goal line before the net was dislodged and it hadn't. Sharangovich remedied it on the ensuing penalty shot. He slowed down and went to his backhand, shooting from the right wing side beating Halverson for his ninth goal of the season with just 4.7 seconds left in the period. It gave Binghamton a 3-2 lead. “That was tough to get a goal in the last minute, let along the last seconds, but we rebounded well and got the tying goal in the third,” said McCambridge. The Wolf Pack first goal was a record setter. The Wolf Pack’s top line got the offense generated. Lettieri pushed the puck up to Fogarty who was coming in off the left wing. Fogarty used Devils' defenseman Tariq Hammond as a screen and zipped a shot on Johnson. He made a left pad save, but the rebound went right to the hard-charging Gilmour who buried his 19th of the season at 12:07. The goal broke the team record for goals scored in a season by a defenseman. It's a record that stood for eleven years and was held by Andrew Hutchison who went on to win the AHL’s Eddie Shore Trophy that season. With the goal, Gilmour took over the scoring lead among AHL defenseman from Zach Redmond of the Rochester Americans. “(Scoring the record-setting goal is) very special obviously, and nice to get a pat on the back, but we have ten games left here. We still have points to get here,” Gilmour said. McCambridge started the game by changing all his defense combinations and shook up his bottom two lines from the previous game. He changed the lines again in the second period even a bit more when the team did not come up with much of a jump as they did in the first period. SCRATCHES: Dawson Leedahl (upper body, week-to-week) Rob O’Gara (lower body, week-to-week) Sean Day (lower body, day-to-day) Shawn O'Donnell (healthy) Chris Bigras (ankle, out for the season) If Day isn’t ready for the weekend another body will be added for the backline. LINES: Fogarty-Lettieri-Gropp Fontaine-Beleskey-Meskanen Butler-St. Amant-Wallin Greg Chase-Ronning-Gettinger Gilmour-Wesley Raddysh-Lindgren Bergman-Crawley NOTES: Wolf Pack recall Libor Hajak will likely not return this season after suffering a shoulder injury in New York. Thankfully, the injury is not as serious as first thought, but with the Rangers and Wolf Pack not making the post-season, they opted to not take an unnecessary risk and shut him down for the rest of the season. The penalty shot was the 38th against the Wolf Pack in their 22-year history of the franchise. It was the third that Halverson has faced. Te most by a goalie was Chad Johnson, who faced six. The last Wolf Pack successful penalty shot was taken by Dan Catenacci on April 14, 2017, against Utica. Attendance was announced at 1,775 making it the 18th worst home crowd in Wolf Pack history. In reality, there were only maybe 500 fans in the building. 26 of the 39 least attended games in team history have come under the Global/Spectra umbrella. The top day is Wednesday with 27 games, 5 on Tuesday and 2 on Thursday. Paul Carey (Salisbury Prep) and Connor Clifton (Quinnipiac University) were recalled by Boston from Providence. Congrats to now two former UCONN seniors for signing their first pro contracts. Captain Miles Gendron signed two contracts, one deal for the rest of the season with Ottawa’s Double-A affiliate, the Brampton Beast (ECHL), and a one year deal for next season to play for Belleville (AHL). He could make his pro debut for Brampton on Saturday against Ft. Wayne. Karl El-Mir signed an ATO deal with Providence (AHL). Other collegiate signees today include; Canisius College (AHA) saw three of their players sign. Ian Edmondson with the Wichita Thunder (ECHL), and Jimmy Mazza to the Reading Royals (ECHL) and Dylan McLaughlin to the Rockford Ice Hogs (AHL). Hans Gorowsky went from the University of Alabama-Huntsville to Adirondack Thunder (ECHL), while Jay Dickman of Bemidji St. State (WCHA) signs with the Florida Everblades (ECHL). The first player to go to Europe after this past season is Jacob Ratcliffe, from Division III's Westfield St. (MASAC). The first New Zealander (Canterbury, NZ) male player to play US college hockey at any level, will play with the Sydney Bears (Australia-AIHL) this summer. Goalie Grace Harrison plays varsity for St. Lawrence University (ECACHL) and is the only other Division I New Zealander in Kiwi hockey history to date. Pack jersey of the night: #5 Tommy Hughes, #46 Jordan Owens and a very unique defunct Lewiston Maineiacs QMJHL jersey.
