You tuck your letter away under your placemat as you eat, not wanting to open it up in the middle of lunch, even though the others had done so.
Truthfully, you were dreading whatever news your dad had for you and you would rather read it in private, knowing he rarely wrote to you so it must be some form of news, most likely bad.
George kept flicking his gaze to you at he ate, clearly checking on your well-being but you simply pretended that you were fine even though you could feel the pit on anxiety building up inside.
After lunch, you'd all decided not to go back to the lake but to shower and chill in the house as the sun was at its peak and quite frankly, you couldn't sit in it much longer. Hermione had packed already and had everything ready for her leaving later that afternoon, so you took some time to just spend her last few hours all together.
You were all sat around in the lounge, the coolest room in the house, some of you reading, some playing exploding snap and others just chatting. It was nice just to all spend time together even if you weren't all interacting as you escaped the heat in the coolest room.
"Wanna play a game? Like truth or would you rather or something?" Ginny asks after winning another round of exploding snap. "I'm not doing dares with these two here," she says, nodding towards the twins.

You, Hermione and Harry were sat on the sofa, Ron in the armchair and Ginny and the twins were sat around the table on the floor, padded out with cushions.
"Yeah sounds good to me," you say, placing your bookmark into your book and placing it down next to you on the floor.
Everyone mutually agreed and you all began huddling round, deciding on the rules.
"Okay youngest to oldest," Ginny says, hearing immediate protest from the twins. "You chose first yesterday and today, time for a switch up." "Would you rather, er, throw up slugs again or dance with Snape at the yule ball," Harry says with a devious grin. You had to admit the last one was good but it was much tamer than you originally had thought it would be.

"Oh erm, ughr," Ron mumbles, not knowing what to ask. Immediately the twins begin to mock him and you even inwardly groan, finding the game boring already. "How many books have you read this summer?"
You roll your eyes and openly groan along with the twins, all three of you finding the questions too boring.
"I'll answer that for her, too many," Fred says, jumping in. "Right I'm switching things up." He immediately stands and walks off, coming back a few minutes later bringing an empty bottle with him, necking the last of the drink before he puts it on the coffee table.
"Whoever it lands on has to answer the question, then they get to ask the next question," He says, spinning the bottle until it lands on Ron.

"He was just forwarding a letter from my friend," you explained.
The beginnings of an idea were forming in your head as you looked at George, a rising hopefulness gathering in your belly.

"Um about two I reckon, why?" George asks, moving to sit beside you at the table in Arthur's usual spot.

Molly had jumped at the chance to go shopping and Arthur had gone along with it for the sake of his family. You knew where Val would be later that afternoon and hoped to be able to catch her but until then you strolled around Diagon Alley with the twins, having dropped Hermione off at the station and then broken away from the others as you weaved in and out of the stores.
Your first stop was Gringotts to exchange a muggle cheque your father had sent at the start of term for your school supplies before heading to Flourish and Botts for some new supplies.
"Wonder if they still sell Lockhart's shit?" You laugh as George opens the door for you.
"Doubt it, though fiction books always sell better," he laughs, following you towards the textbook area with Fred lingering behind.
Seeing a potion book you didn't own, you briefly flicked through it before putting it back on the shelf, realising it was utter trash. You briefly wondered if Professor Snape would let you borrow any of his own books this year, knowing that though they were much more advanced, they were immeasurably more informative.
You picked up a new textbook that you needed for your defence against the dark arts class and began wandering towards the back section when an overly excited Fred ran up to you and George, wielding a book.
"Twelve fail-safe ways to charm witches!" He says excitedly, laughing whilst flicking through the pages to show you a few diagrams and read out a couple of passages.
"And you need that why?" You asked defensively with a frown, not finding the underlying meaning very funny. He immediately senses your displeasure and his eyes bug out as he stumbles over his words as he tries to explain.
"Not for me princess, obviously, merlin, I meant for us to give it to Ron!" George immediately laughs at the plan and you absently nod, feeling a little off from the whole thing. You begin wandering away from them, making your way back to the potions area as they excitedly flick through the book.
"Professor?" You say smiling, spotting a familiar face within the potions section, his characteristic black hair and flowing capes always recognisable.
"Miss y/l/n," he says, turning in surprise at your voice, an almost smile tugging at his lips in recognition as he looks down into your basket. "I would have thought you already owned a copy of the necessary textbook for my class," he says with a hard but familiar tone, as if there's humour buried deep within it.
"I do sir, I was hoping to find something more advanced but they're all utter drivel," you said honestly, gesturing to the green book you'd looked at earlier. He huffs out a little puff of laughter though he tries to hide it before turning away to look up at the shelf. "Yes," he says, drawing out the syllable of the word before reaching up to the top shelf and pulling down a small, leather bound book that was hidden between two much larger books. He checks the spine and briefly flips it over before handing it to you with an almost smile, "this should be of use to you, it is well beyond the ability of a typical sixth or seventh year but you've exceeded all of my previous expectations, what's one more."
"Thank you Professor," you say as you reach for the book, trying desperately not to blush at his praise.
"Angel- oh, Um, Professor Snape," George says as he bounds around the corner, coming to an immediate holt as he spots the Potion master. Fred, clearly not anticipating his brother's sudden stop, barrels into George from behind as they both look up to see you and Snape conversing.
"Anyway," Snape says, his tone and features immediately hardening as he looks at the troublesome twins before looking back at you, "good day."
You follow him with your eyes, looking down at the book he'd given you before looking up again, just in time to see him cast one last glance at you before exiting the store.
"What did old Snapey want?" Fred said, throwing his arm around your shoulders.
"He recommended a book for me, said it would help me with my NEWTS," you shrugged, not directly trying to knock Fred's arm off of you but also not actively trying to keep it around you, still feeling a little uneasy about the misunderstanding with the book from earlier.
You walked and paid for the two books before shoving them into your little crochet shopping bag and walked over to Quality Quidditch supplies with the twins so that they could fawn over the new brooms and array of merchandise.
Checking the time, you briefly wondered when you should set off for the little muggle coffee shop just outside of Diagon alley that you knew Val would be visiting and decided to have another thirty minutes with the twins before going.
You ran into Molly and Arthur who were sat outside one of the tea shops sharing a pot of tea. They waved excitedly at you all and carried on with their little date that mainly consisted of people-watching and laughing.
You nipped to fetch a new quill and some parchment before eyeing up a new school skirt in Madam Malkin's but couldn't justify spending the money when you're old one would do, at least for the rest of this year. Fred, true to form, had quietly muttered some sexual innuendos about never having enough skirts and how much he liked you in them but you ignored him and instead left without the skirt.
"Okay, I'm going to meet my friend, not sure how long I'll be, where will I find you?" You turned, addressing the twins.
"Take all the time you want. We'll probably be in Gambol and Japes, if not we'll meet outside Ollivanders or come to you?" George said, pointing towards the joke shop on the corner. You nodded and reached out to subtly grab his other hand as you said goodbye. You turned to Fred and he subtly leaned in, looking like he was whispering in your ear and kissed the side of your head gently.
George then reached up and grabbed your shopping bag off your shoulder with a smile, "don't want her seeing any of this do you?" He slung it over his own shoulder and you had to bite your lip at seeing the 6 foot 3 Weasley boy lugging around a rose patterned crochet bag, but it didn't even faze him after wearing a lifetime of Molly's knitted creations.
Walking towards the coffee shop, your nerves were all over the place, firstly hoping that you could catch her and secondly that she would respond well to the surprise if you had your timings right.
Walking in, the little bell above the door chimed and you took a moment to look around at the customers, not seeing her signature blond hair anywhere.
"What can I get you love?" The barista asks and you ordered a caramel macchiato, something that you would never be able to find in the wizarding world. You reached for your little coin purse of muggle money and paid with the change, waiting to collect your drink at the end of the bar. When your drink was ready, you walked over to a table near the window and were immediately thankful that you'd bought along your book so that you'd have something to distract you and that the coffee shop had working air conditioning. Each time the bell chimed, you looked up in hope but then went straight back to reading your book, waiting for the next time.
"You have to get the banana bread!" You heard as the bell chimed and it immediately alerted you to the voice. You grinned as you spotted a shirt female with familiar blonde hair stood beside her absurdly tall dad who had dark brown nearly jet black hair.
They ordered their drinks and cakes, paid and then moved to wait by the end of the bar just as you had. Seeking an opportunity, you stood and walked over to them discreetly before putting on a voice, "excuse me?"
They both turned around with polite but confused smiles on their faces and you couldn't help but laugh at the reaction as waves of recognition passed over them.
"Oh my god!" Val squealed as she threw her arms around you, not a single care in the world about her absurd volume. You beamed and laughed as she rocked you in her arms, thankful you were able to see her again. "What are you doing here?! I thought you were in school? Did you get my letter?" She began to say frantically as she pulled away to look at you. You simply laughed and nodded, not even knowing where to start. She pulled you in for another hug and you held her just as tightly; only realising now how much you'd missed her.
You looked over her shoulder to Adam, her dad, seeing him smile widely at you both. When you pulled apart, he held out the plate of banana bread towards you, gesturing for you to take it as he pulled you into a side hug, having been close since you were five years old.
"No I can't, you have it," you said, trying to protest. He chuckled and ran his hand through his hair, "I don't even like it, I was just doing it to shut her up. It's really good to see you, kid."
He walked off with his drink to sit down near the table where your stuff was, happy to give you both space and to flick through his mobile phone for a while, something you hadn't seen in a long time.
You were desperate for a catch-up with your best girl friend and truthfully, you needed some one to talk through your problems with, someone with an unbiased, outsiders perspective; someone who didn't know the twins at all. The whole Amortentia incident was still fresh in your mind, only worsened by smelling the whizzbang smoke the other night and you were more conflicted than ever about your feelings for both of them. Val was the only one who wouldn't judge you for what you were doing, who you knew you could trust to talk openly to, at least without mentioning the magic.
Val grabbed her drink from the counter and moved over to your original table so that you could chat. She went first, immediately telling you about how she was seeing a guy at school and that her dad didn't know so you had to be cool about it. She told you more about what college she had picked and how the rest of your friends were doing and some chatter about new muggle movies and music you needed to experience
"So, what about you?" She asks, picking the last little bits of her cake off the plate. You huffed out a sigh and placed your drink back down on the table. "Oh no, what happened with Fred?"
You'd told her all about your crush on Fred a few years ago but had never mentioned much about his twin, though you'd spoken about him in a friend way. You figured there was no time like the present to offload all of your complicated feelings.
"It's, complicated," you say, picking at the lid of your coffee, "did I tell you that Fred told me he had feelings for me?"
Judging by her almighty gasp, you assumed not. "Problem is, so did his twin brother." Another almost comical gasp.
"Then I realised that I might also have feelings for you George and things are now a little complicated, to say the least." You were quiet now, just a little above a whisper to avoid someone overbearing.
"So what did you do?" She asks attentively, giving you her full attention. You sighed and looked up at her as you replied.
"I'm kind of dating both? For now, please don't judge me."
"I would never!" She says reaching her hand towards yours, "so you have to decide eventually?"
You nod. "That's the problem. Every time I feel like I'm starting to decide, something tips the scale and I'm right back to the beginning."
You rub your hands over your face trying to relieve some of the tension but of course it doesn't work.
"Who do you see a future with?" She asks, keeping her tone even as she takes a sip of her coffee.
"Well that's the thing, I've been staying with them this week and both of them have said the cutest things about the future and it's got me even more confused. We had separate dates earlier this week and I had a night with George first, well kind of the day and night because Fred was sick and we talked about what we were doing after school and how we both wanted one or two kids etc, and it was such a nice thought. Then the other morning I came downstairs and he was in the kitchen reading the newspaper, shirtless and looking hot as fuck and it made me think that it could be my future you know, husband in the kitchen making breakfast blah blah blah." You took a breath and carried on explaining as she listened to you, "but then with Fred, the other night, he was saying about how we'd live together and he's hold me every night and bring me cups of tea in a morning and god the constant marriage references," you took another breath, trying to remember not to overload her and forcing yourself not to mention the Amortentia outright.
"The thing is, I love them both but in different ways. George brings me comfort, he's gentler and more sensitive, real proper husband material. I can see our future completely and I'd be happy but then there's Fred. We'd have a happy, fun filled life, it would never be boring and I'd be happy with him. But now I know what it's like to be loved by both of them and I can't even bare to think of choosing one and losing the other."
Silence lingers around you both as you finish offloading your thoughts. The weight of your words hangs in the air and you have to shoot a look at Val to check that she's still with you, and then around to check no one was listening.
"What about quick fire questions? We write out the answers or tally them and you can see who you favour?" She asks and to be honest, it sounds like a good plan.
"At this point I'd do anything."
She immediately scoots over to sit beside you rather than across from you and leans down to pull a notebook and pen from her bag. She flicks it open to a blank page and draws a little tally chart with their names at the top.
"So I'll ask you a bunch of different questions and scenarios and you have to say the first one that comes to your mind," she explains as you enthusiastically nod along with her. She suddenly leans in to whisper in your ear. "Quick one, have you slept with them both?"
You nod slowly, feeling as if she would judge you but she simply nods with a neutral expression, as if it was just a regular thing to ask someone.
"Okay, who's messier?"
"Fred."
"Who's grumpier?"
"Fred."
"Who's the most romantic?"
"George."
"Who's funnier?"
"Fred."
"Who's more sensitive?"
"George."
"Who hugs you more?"
"George."
"Who kisses you more?
"Fred."
"Who's hornier?"
"Fred."
"Who gives better head?"
"George."
"Who has a bigger dick?"
"Fred," you say, quickly adding, "only by a fraction though." She nods, then begins changing tactics.
"Does Fred want kids?"
"Yeah, but he wants more than George."
"Who's more attractive?"
"They're identical twins," you say blankly but she reaches out and flicks you on the arm.
"And you can tell them apart so there must be differences," she reasons and you can't fault her logic.
"Um Fred? George's nose is a little bigger and his features are a little sharper I guess."
"Okay next set of questions," she says, looking up from her notes, "If you did chose one, who would take the rejection worse?"
"George," you reply, your heart doing a little twang of sadness at the very thought.
"Okay, fast forward five years, it's a Saturday morning, no work, no plans, explain what it would look like with George," she says, preparing to make notes again.
The memory of him in the kitchen the other morning, shirtless and reading the newspaper flashes into your mind.
"I wake up and he's not in bed but there's a hot cup of tea on the bedside table. He's in the kitchen, sat shirtless at the little table, reading the newspaper and sipping his tea. He pulls me into his lap, rests his head on my shoulder and reads the sport scores out to me and any news bits he knows I'd like. I make breakfast for us and we sit and eat at the little table laughing and chatting until we inevitably end up back in bed," you say, listing out each part of your little dream.
Val let's out a little 'aww' as she makes her notes before looking back up to you with a smile, "same scenario but with Fred."
"I wake up and he's sleeping next to me, still holding me from the night before. He wakes up and we don't leave the bed for another hour at least. He makes me tea and we make breakfast together and then we sit watching terrible tv, mocking the actors and awful storylines. He pulls me closer to him to cuddle on the couch and we spend the day just like that."
"Okay different tactic again, I want you to give me the pros for dating Fred or listing his best qualities," she says, flipping over the page and starting a new one entirely.
"He's funny and mischievous, kind to me, very protective. Hot obviously, like little stupid things like running his fingers through his hair or rolling up his sleeves. We're best friends so there's no weirdness and most people think we're dating anyway."
"Okay now George."
"Funny, sensitive and sweet, more considerate than Fred and more likely to notice somethings wrong. More likely to think ahead, and to apologise. He's comfort for me."
"And now worst qualities of Fred."
"Doesn't always think things through, can be impulsive and not think of the consequences. He can be a little mean, to his brothers and stuff, just a little more brutal than George is. He can be a little grumpy sometimes, usually about other guys or whatever like he's a little possessive. Not always the most responsible and can be a little unreliable."
"And George?"
"Follows Fred diligently, a little insecure, not as confident in himself, same as Fred that he doesn't always think of consequences."
"Okay last one, what are the pros and cons of being in a relationship with them in general?"
"Pros; wonderful family, great parents in law, I get along really well with their other siblings, share the same friends. I'd be happy."
"Cons?"
"Um well I guess there family isn't rich or anything, not that it bothers me, but for some maybe that's a thing? The only con is hurting the other brother."
"Right, your conclusion," she says, adding up the tally before looking back at you.
“You’re screwed.”

whether it be random projects you just started and dedicate most of your time to, or tasks for work/homework for school you still need to get done; heeseung is always right by your side to help you out with whatever you need. even when you don't really tell him that you're struggling with something, heeseung grabs a chair and sits down beside you anyway - without a word, like it's a given. regardless of the fact that he might have other things he'd like (or even has) to do; helping you with whatever you need to get done with has priority now. plus, especially when he knows you're stressed, he'll try his best to help you out even more - knowing full well he doesn't actually have to and he could just let you do it yourself, since he knows you'll get it done either way. but of course, you thank him every time for it. and you make sure to thank him especially when you know it's a task he doesn't quite enjoy doing; knowing he takes time out of his day for such things makes you happy.

cooking your favourite meals for you
whenever jay finds out about another one of your favourite meals, he promises himself that he's gonna try making it - despite the fact that sometimes, he's never even heard of some of them. but even then, he will try his best so he can surprise you with it even better. because, one; they're your favourite meals. and made by jay? he knows it'll make you happy. he loves nothing more than making you happy, with literally anything - and hey, if cooking for you does the job, then he'll even spoil you with all the food he cooks. and two; if they're your favourite meals, then he might want to try them himself; possibly wanting to see why you love them so much. and who knows, maybe he'll love them as much as you! so as soon as he knows, you can bet that he'll make your favourite meals more often from time to time, knowing how happy it makes you. plus, making them more often, means he'll get to polish his skills! since everyone knows how much of a perfectionist he can be. but what makes you the happiest about it, is that now you'll have your favourite meals with jay. and what makes jay the happiest about it, are your happy reactions each time and how you genuinely enjoy it.

giving you a massage whenever you're stressed
whenever you just fall into bed and sigh, jake knows something's up. and if you don't wanna talk about it or are simply too tired, jake just asks if you want a massage and chuckles when you nod in an instant. you simply relax like you've been waiting for this all day, sometimes even going as far as falling asleep the second he's got his hands on you. jake loves making you feel good, so it's not only something he does when you're stressed; oftentimes, he'll randomly ask when you're just sitting at home, and of course, you'll randomly say yes. if it were to go after him, he could have his hands on you all the time. and if it were to go after you, you'd let him. plus, to your luck, he gives good massages. like, really good, and therefore, you could never get enough of them. it's like his hands work magic on you, and suddenly you feel so much better. a very very good thing you were lucky enough to get used to after a while.

tying / braiding your hair for you
the fact that sunghoon knows how to braid hair isn't too surprising, all things considered; so it only seems natural. yet you still can't hold in a tiny chuckle every time he braids your hair - you think it's cute, especially considering how much he loves doing it. he'll do it at any given chance, never missing a single opportunity. it's something rather small, although daily, but it makes both of you happy in a silly way. even something small as simply tying your hair for you when you're almost falling asleep, and therefore too tired or lazy to do it yourself - you appreciate the fact that he pays attention to details like that. it feels like a tiny favour he can do every now and then (quite often actually). whenever he sees you wearing your hair in a braid, - which, needless to say, he braided - he can't help but smile. even more so when you wear it throughout the whole day - although it, obviously, looks rather tacky after a while compared to how it looked in the beginning. but it's more than okay, because guess what? he's already down to braid your hair again. and additionally, you also braid some short strands of his hair just for the fun of it sometimes. because of this, he's always got at least one hair tie on his wrist - and needless to say, none of them are ever really his.

taking care of you when you're sick
you could almost call sunoo your personal nurse whenever you get sick, or just don't feel good at all. he will make sure you stay in bed so you can rest; therefore bringing everything he makes to bed so you can relax extra much. it can go from meals, additionally specific soups to make you feel better, to tea and over to hot water bottles and more - he will most definitely make sure you got everything you want. but also everything you need, for that matter; for example, sunoo always makes sure you don't skip any meals, even when you're sick and barely feel like eating. and honestly speaking, you could never resist him, not when he's there to make those meals for you. but what you probably almost love most besides his five star service, is also him always making sure to ask if you're feeling better by now, and assuring that you will get better in no time. that he loves you, and how he asks if you need anything else - like he hasn't given you the world by now. it's something you appreciate beyond words, and you can never actually thank him enough for doing everything he can just so you'll get better.

always asks how / if he can help you
maybe most people would barely notice how this became an actual thing jungwon does every time he sees you doing something, literally anything. but you did notice, and it's kinda really adorable in a way. whatever you're doing, - cooking/baking something, cleaning, doing other chores such as laundry etc, homework and what not - he always asks how or if he can help you. and if he can, he's doing it in no time. like, you'll barely have finished telling him what exactly he can help with, and he's already doing it. you'd say he's dedicated within only a second, just to help you. like mentioned, it's something rather small, - really small, most would say - but jungwon always wants to help wherever he can, and with whatever there is. and you really, really do appreciate it; despite the fact that you might already be doing something quick and easy. he loves to do things with you, even if it's something such as chores. even chores you're almost done with, for that matter; if he sees a chance, he'll take it. and hey, if you get it done faster together than you would have by yourself, maybe jungwon can even spend more time with you for the rest of the day, just enjoying your company.
ʚɞ. nishimura riki — 西村 力
tying your shoes for you
sometimes riki will notice that your shoelaces are untied before you do; meaning he'll simply stop you from walking any further and basically drop to his knees to tie them. and well, sometimes you're quite taken aback as he does it without saying much. he loves doing it for some reason - whether you're already outside and they're suddenly untied, or you're just about to leave and you (well, initially you) need to tie them. the boy will literally drop to his knees in no time, leaving you barely time to react sometimes; no matter where you are. he won't even ask whether he should do it for you, he'll just do it. but it always gets a little giggle out of you regardless - you love when he does it, so you let him. although.. at times, you wouldn't put it past him to tie your shoelaces together just to mess with you - like the menace he is (more like the menace you're hopelessly in love with, though) - however, you couldn't say you'd be surprised. but needless to say, at the end of the day you'll always let him do it, because why wouldn't you?

Summary: After your family cut you off, your great-aunt Laura invited you over to her ranch you often visited when you were just a child... You drive through the beautiful town until you accidentally graze a horse that just so happens to be the sheriffs...

A/N: I've gotten some feedback on my writing! So this is my first attempt at trying to make it better and make it make sense for all! I really do appreciate suggestions with writing/about the book, also love hearing what you have to say about the characters.

The beautiful grassy fields, full of bright colorful flowers, and the clouds in the most beautiful blue sky ever seen. It was like it was picture-perfect almost too good to be true. Maybe it was, maybe it wasn't you'd never know for sure.
Most of all though... Dean. He was a good man, you could tell by just the way he carried himself or the way he cared about others.
You've never laughed as hard or had genuine conversations as you had this afternoon with no other than the gruff cowboy. Family members never really cared or even tried to seem interested in what you had to say but when they did they were only interested in how it'd affect their precious images.
After he left though, grumbling about having to chase some dog again earning a laugh from you and a simple 'good luck' he ran off after walking me back. True gentleman I must say.
“Hey, Laura do you need help with anything?” You tiredly ask desperately wanting to drown yourself in a nice hot shower.
The older woman looks up from her knitting and smiles as she shakes her head “No thank you sweetheart, how did today go? Did he go easy on ya?” She asked as she went back to what she was doing glancing up at you a few times.
Easy? Maybe he did? He didn't seem as bossy as he usually was had they talked to him?
“You could say that... He did teach me a lot. I appreciate you guys letting me stay here” You thank them probably for the one-hundredth time this week.
“That's good. He's very good at what he does, and quit thankin' us we are family and family helps one another. Now shoo! Go relax, you are probably exhausted its getting way too hot out there”
You smile and nod, giving her a quick hug before running up to the room.

Drying off your hair, tossing a tank top, and your favorite soft pajama pants that most definitely would get ruined here if something were to happen.
The creaking wood floors, announce you to everyone downstairs causing Dean and a little girl to look at you... Smiling at them you wave.
“Who's this little one?” You ask but can see the resemblance between the two, was this who Lina Linda Lisa was? Whatever her name was talking about that day on the sidewalk?
“My daughter” His usual gruff and annoyed voice was non-existent. He sounded happier.
The big ole green-eyed little girl had the biggest smile on her face as she leaned back and forth on her plastic princess heels. She was practically a carbon copy of Dean, but as a young girl and boy was she adorable.
“Hello! I'm Rory” She stuck her tiny hand out, You gently shook her hand the same smile stuck on your face.
“Nice to meet you, Rory! I'm Y/n”
Rory quietly thought for a moment, it felt like a mini interview, and god that made you anxious.
“Do you like ponies?” she asked squinting her eyes, acting as if she was asking the most important question ever.
Dean rolled his eyes and shook his head while he had a small smile of amusement wondering how this would go.
“Hm, are they magical ponies or normal ones?”
She tapped her chin, before reaching up to her father who knew the look she gave him probably way too well because right away he handed her a unicorn stuffed animal. “Obviously the ones that can fly!” Aurora said in a duh tone, pointing up at you, you look around curious as to what/why she was exactly pointing for.
“Aurora what did I say about pointing? It's rude.” Dean's voice echoed from the hallway, he was on his way into the kitchen.
“I like her, you date her?” She said, causing Dean to spit out his coffee and start coughing his lungs out. Your eyes widen in surprise, who would've thought a simple question about magical freakin' horses would lead to this?
“You can't keep doin' that, sweet pea. She's my friend, and that's all.” He explained, cleaning up his mess while the little girl nodded before shrugging.

The rest of the night went well, You and Rory played for a bit while Dean cooked. Giving him credit where it's due, he's a pretty damn good cook if you must say yourself. Though half the things he does make will mostly take 30 years off your life. That donut burger was worth it though...
Bedtime came around, and Aurora fell asleep in your arms safe and sound. Following Dean up to his room after he offered plenty of times to take Rory off of your shoulders after you refused not wanting to wake the young lady.
What you hadn't noticed before when you had woken the man up this morning was the little princess bed on the other end of the bedroom full of toys and stuffed animals.
“Sorry,” He whispered pushing everything off to the side neatly, grabbing a big t-shirt and gently putting it on Rory, before taking her from your arms and tucking her in.
Oddly enough this felt normal. Though it probably shouldn't have. Friends, friends are what we are and that's it.
“Good night Dean.” You say halfway out the bedroom door when he says something that caught you off guard.
“Will you have a drink with me?” He asked standing up straight and walking towards you with a tiny smile.
A drink with Dean? That actually sounds kinda nice.
“Sure. Though I'm surprised you still haven't learned your lesson from last night's drunken mess” You tease, flashing off your pearly whites as he rolls his eyes guiding you downstairs out to the front porch.
He hands me a nice cold beer before plopping himself down onto the front porch stairs, looking up at the starry night sky. Even at night, this place was beautiful.
“So, you never told me why you're here in the first place Darlin',” He said breaking the silence, putting his full attention onto you.
“Runaway bride.” You say shortly, with a tiny shrug before taking a sip of the liquid. Dean's were wide before he broke into a fit of laughter, shaking his head
“No really why are you here?” He asked again calming himself down, the smile still on his face and his face all red from the laughing.
“Runaway bride.” You say slower this time, in all seriousness. The smile was quick to leave his face and his eyes looked like they were about to pop out of his face.
“Your fuckin' with me right? That stuff only happens on telenovelas” Dean was leaning his head back against the railing, still in shock.
“Nope.”
“Y/n why do you sound so calm about this? What'd he do to have you run off to the middle of nowhere and pick up horse shit for the rest of your life” Dean asked, running his fingers through his hair before finishing off his beer.
“It was set up, arranged marriage. Didn't want to go through with it so I left plain and simple.” You get up stretching your arms grabbing the small blanket from the swinging couch, wrapping it around yourself.
“You shock me every day. I won't have some crazy man comin' here demanding you right? I ain't gonna get in a fight for you sweetheart pretty and all but I have a kid and I'm already on thin ice.” He seriously says while never once looking away from you.
“I don't expect you to get in a fight for me and no, there should be no man coming here to fight you” You roll your eyes, men were stupid sad thing was you did want someone to love, and protect you. But then again that only happened in fairytales, this was fair from one.
“Glad we are on the same page. But as the sheriff, I'd have to help ya out so just gimmie a call”

pick me girl...
There were new recruits in TF141, and there was one of them who was a... pick me girl... oh no-
You, Price, Ghost, Soap, and Keegan were talking about the next mission, Alejandro was doing some work with Graves. Suddenly, the pick me girl approached you guys
"Hewwo! Can you guys just show me around this huuuuge base! I'm so smol that I get lost in this base... and don't wowwe! I'm definitely one of the bois!" She said. She didn't even acknowledge you because of the fact you are a girl.
You didn't want to deal with her, but you knew that you couldn't start up a fight. Not yet. You stood back with your arms crossed as you looked down at her, waiting for one of the guys to say something.
Soap snorted loudly at her, and she took a step towards Soap, putting her hands on her hips.
"Excuse yow? Hewwo? Can I be addressed, pwease? It's vewy rude to ingowre someone, ya know...?" Soap just rolled his eyes, and she was talking in this high voice. The other soldiers chuckled. You furrow your brows in annoyance, but you let Soap and the others handle this. Not unless things get too out of hand.
Keegan, the calmest soldier you know, walked up to her and got uncomfortably close to her. She backed up a bit but still smiled.
"What's your name, doll?"
"Oh! I'm [insert name], but everyone calls me [something cutesy like "angel" or "sweetiecakes"]. I always get lost in this base bc I'm so tiny and lost... pwease can I have one of you big men to show me arouuund??"
You cringe at the way she talked, and how she introduced herself. With narrowed eyes, you think about how she included her nickname. She's so...ew. Gives you the ick. You stand a little distance away, quietly observing the situation with this pick me girl.
Keegan chuckled and said in a flirtatious tone...
"Ooh! Don't worry your little head off! I'll show you where everything is, little princess." GAGGING AT THIS
"Aww, tanks you vewy much." She smirked. The other male soldiers were like... "Uuuhh" as they watched it all. You raised your brow in question as Keegan walks past you. You shoot him a questioning glance, and he gives you a reassuring wink. Did Keegan have a plan in mind?
Keegan and her walk off to some place in this huge base, and after 5 minutes your ear piece crackles, and Keegan's voice comes up.
"Uhh... guys... she's not stopping talking. Like, literally. Not for even a second. She's making me uncomfortable."
You sighed, and responded back to your ear piece.
"Where are you?" You asked, already on the move.
"Uuh, I'm on the roof, she dragged me up here and won't stop talking." And he said it in a panicked way that showed this wasn't just a mere inconvenience, he genuinely didn't know how to cope with her. Hearing that, you picked up your pace.
"Make sure you update us on what's going on up there with that....pick me girl". Keegan sighed and nodded, and Soap rolled his eyes.
"Alright. It's a nightmare here." He said, sounding like he was genuinely distressed. You walk out onto the roof, swiveling your head, searching for Keegan. You spot him backed up on a crate while the girl was all up on him. You frown at this and approach them quietly.
"Hey new girl, think you can walk around the base by yourself now?" You said as you nearer them, crossing your arms as you stand next to her. The girl looked at you and narrowed her eyes as she backed away from Keegan. Her expression was a mix of annoyance and confusion, and she was trying to decide how she was going to deal with you.
"Excuse me? Why don't you go mind your own business."She got even closer to Keegan, and he was obviously very uncomfortable, but he tried to play it cool.
"Keegan's my friend, so technically it is my business" you hissed, leaning down to hover above her since she was shorter. She rolled her eyes and spoke in a flirty tone.
"Yeah, whatever you say, sweetie, he's mine now."She laughed, thinking her comment was hilarious. The thing was, Keegan was actually getting annoyed at how clingy she was towards him.
"Yours? Keegan belongs to no one but himself" I scoffed, narrowing your eyes at her. You started up get annoyed by how she acted. She just laughed at that. THE AUDACITY-
"Oh... I think you're jealous..." She tried being flirtatious with him, but he was obviously uncomfortable. When you got mad and said that... she got mad too. "Okay, he doesn't, yet... but I'm going to make him! He's way too hot to belong only to himself."
"Clearly Keegan is uncomfortable with you" You said, and gestured for Keegan to come by you instead. When he walks over, your arm snakes around him, pulling him in close."You see the difference? Obviously Keegan is way more comfortable with me than you- take some hints, girl" you scoffed.
Keegan looked relieved to be away from her, and the girl looked so annoyed she was turning red.
"No... no... he's just shy! I know he likes me! He's just afraid of admitting it."She pouted a little. "Also, don't touch my man! I know he likes me, so you go away."
"You better watch your mouth, little girl" you scowled, pulling Keegan in closer. She scoffed and backed away.
"Listen here sweetie, you're one to talk... I'm clearly superior to you, and everyone knows that men prefer superior women." She said in this extremely arrogant and high-horse tone... as if you weren't even able to be in the presence of her. She got up and walked a little closer to Keegan, placing her hands on her waist and said.
"Can I have my man back?" You snicker sinisterly, and look down apon her.
"He's not your boyfriend" You hugged Keegan, your hands in some suggestive areas, but you glare at her. "And I'm your superior, you need to remember that you're a recruit" She had a shocked look on her face, probably didn't expect you to get so aggressive. She got so annoyed that her tone dropped her act entirely, and she seemed furious.
"Look, he's mine, I saw him first, so stop clinging to him, he's mine now. As the superior woman, he would never stoop low enough to be with you, he's mine. And you better stay away from him."
"Such a brat with all bark but no bite..." You sneer at her, letting go of Keegan and stalked closer to the girl. "What if I happen to be girlfriend, hm? What are you gonna do now?" You said, getting all up in her face. Even though you really weren't Keegan's girlfriend, you just wanted this girl to back off from your friend.
The girl scowled at you, but she was slightly intimidated because you stood over her with an ice cold glare.
"Well... I'd just fight you to win him over. I'm stronger, better, and much prettier than you." She was trying to be a bit intimidating, but she was failing miserably. She couldn't even look you in the eyes, and she wasn't able to keep her act together since you got close to her.
"You wanna test that, dollface?" You sneer, cocking your head, cracking your knuckles. She tried to keep to her attitude, but she couldn't keep it up. She looked a little scared now that you were being so aggressive with her.
"Y-you know what, he's not even worth it... he's not even hot enough for me!" Her tone made it clear that she wasn't joking, she was actually quite jealous of you and Keegan being close, so she tried to play off her jealousy in a cool way. You stepped closer.
"You try to flirt with the male or female superiors again and you'll be out of here faster than a bullet- you understand what im saying?" You grit through your teeth, your glare piercing into her. She backed up, a little intimidated now. She was so used to flirting her way out of problems, and the men were usually too blinded to see what she was really doing. But not when you were around... she saw that you were a strong woman and couldn't use her "assets" here.
"Okayyyy, s-sorry," She said nervously, and her flirtatious tone quickly left her voice.
"Good. Now see to it" you said, standing up straight again to your full height. You turned abruptly on your heel and motioned for Keegan to follow. Keegan took his time to follow. When the girl was finally gone, he exhaled and wiped some sweat off his brow, and chuckled nervously.
"Phew... she was really, REALLY clingy, huh?"
"I thought you were better than that- to let a girl walk all over you?" You joked, nudging his arm gently. Keegan smiled a little.
"I didn't know what to do. She's relentless, I couldn't get her to leave me alone. She was too clingy, and I was getting uncomfortable." He said, and you rolled your eyes, but couldn't hold back your laughter at the situation. You chuckled, shaking your head as both of you make way back to the main floor.
"I guess so... and I'm sorry I had to touch you like that back there- she had to get the hint you weren't interested in her" He shrugged and chuckled.
"Don't worry about it, you had to do what you had to do to get her away from me." He laughed a little as well when he mentioned how annoying and clingy she was toward him. He was glad you pulled him away.

Two Knives Chapter 5: Kyoshi- Escalation

Summary:
Things have been stressful for Kyoshi. First, she sang a poem and now the whole kitchen staff thinks it’s about Rangi, and is sure that there will be gossip. Then, Yun asks her to join him for the Fifth Nation treaty signing. Now Rangi’s acting strange. It’s becoming a bit much for Kyoshi’s small corner of the world.
(Canon Divergent AU- Kelsang wasn’t the one who heard the poem?….aka What if it took longer for them to realize Kyoshi was the Avatar?)

About two weeks passed before Kyoshi was able to talk to Yun. 
It had become extremely hectic around the mansion. Hei-Ran was really on Yun when it came to his firebending training. And when she wasn’t taking up his time, Jianzhu was. They were arranging several political meetings for the upcoming months. Treaties and laws needed signing and other such important things.  
Auntie Mui also had an enormous amount of tasks that Kyoshi needed to do. The list was so long every day, she almost didn’t have time to finish them all by the end of the day. 
There must’ve been a lot to do, because even Rangi had to chip in. Unfortunately for Kyoshi, a lot of the tasks seemed to take Rangi to the complete opposite side of the peninsula, let alone the mansion. 
But somehow, every night, Rangi would find a way to make her way back to Kyoshi. It would usually be after everyone had gone to sleep that she would show up at Kyoshi’s door.
Seeing Rangi had become the highlight of Kyoshi’s day-well…night. The only downside was they couldn’t progress their relationship as far as they wanted, due to being so dead tired every night. A combination of the overwork, and the time they spent sacrificing sleep so they could steal what tired kisses they could, would do that to you.
Today, Rangi was in another village delivering a “secret package.” She wouldn’t be back until that night, again. Kyoshi couldn’t help but sigh. 
On the brightside, Yun finally had time to talk about whatever it was that was so important. 
She and Yun were alone in the garden while she fed the koi. In the end, she lied about a frog squirrel eating the lost feed.
“What was it you needed to talk about, Yun?” Kyoshi asked as she scattered the feed into the pond.  
“First off, Kyoshi, I would like to sincerely apologize about what happened with the Fifth Nation,” Yun looked down at his palm. It had been stained by the ink when he earthbent the container to defend himself. “I shouldn’t have put you in danger like that. You even put your life on the line to save me, and it gave me the opportunity to break free of my ice prison.”
Kyoshi put a hand on his shoulder and smiled reassuringly. “Yun, it’s really ok. Don’t beat yourself up, I’m just happy you’re alright.”
Yun grimaced. “But still…..”
“I’m just happy you’re safe. You’re important and people care about you, Yun. And not just because you’re the Avatar! You’re important,” she laughed. “Don’t worry about me.”
Yun smiled at her. “Thanks, Kyoshi. You always seem to know what to say.”
Kyoshi scratched the back of her head. “I don’t know about that.” Her mind wandered to the multiple goofs she’d made in the past month. “Is that what you needed to talk about?”
Yun’s eyes widened and looked away. He stood there silently for a moment, then he nodded to himself. He turned back to Kyoshi, drawing up his full height. He had a serious look in his eye. “Kyoshi, I-” he stopped. His eyes widened and face fell in surprise. “R-Rangi?!”
Kyoshi’s heart fluttered upon hearing Rangi’s name, and quickly followed his gaze that led behind her. When she turned around, she dropped the bag of feed to the ground in surprise as she saw Rangi running towards them. She was a mess, covered in dirt and other foliage. There was even a tiny branch sticking out of her topknot!
Rangi stopped right next to her friends, and stood at attention like she wasn’t covered in grime and sweat. 
“Hey… Guys…. What’d I…. Miss?” she paused between deep gasps of air. 
“Y-you’re…..back,” Yun looked at Rangi, completely surprised.
Kyoshi’s hands hovered over Rangi, the intense urge to clean threatening to overcome her. “W-what happened to you? What happened to your delivery? I thought you wouldn’t be back here until tonight!”
Rangi smiled at her, “Funny story. Turns out, the carriage that was supposed to take me back broke down. So I most likely wasn’t going to be able to come back until tomorrow night at the earliest.”
Kyoshi would’ve hated that, especially if she didn’t get word from Rangi that she'd be late. She would’ve stayed up all night worrying….. But that didn’t mean she wanted Rangi to run headfirst into…..whatever happened to her!
“So, uh, how’d you get back?” Yun let out an exasperated noise. 
“I took a shortcut through, or I guess it was over, the mountain,” Rangi said matter-of-factly. As if it was the most normal thing in the world. Just a typical stroll for the firebender. 
Kyoshi stopped her hovering, only because she needed her full attention to not grab the firebender by the shoulders and shake her. “You took a shortcut through the mountain?!”
Rangi gave Kyoshi a dazzling smile so bright, it’d make the sun jealous. “Of course, it was easy. I think I might make it my go-to shortcut in all honesty.”
Kyoshi was at a loss for words. Rangi sure was….something at times like this. So Kyoshui decided to just…… let the urge to clean overcome her. She started by brushing off the foliage on Rangi’s armor. 
“Well you should be careful, I don’t want my bodyguard getting hurt,” Yun laughed. 
“Thank you for your concern, Avatar. But you needn't worry, I’m very capable,” Rangi laughed back.
“So what was it you wanted to say again, Yun?” Kyoshi asked as she brushed off Rangi’s pant leg.
Rangi flashed her dazzling smile towards Yun. “Oh, were you two talking about something? I’m so sorry for interrupting.” 
“Uh…..” Yun paused, trying to collect his thoughts, then he grinned. “I got a new pai sho board.”
Kyoshi stopped what she was doing and grimaced. “That’s the forty-fifth one! Get rid of it!”
Yun laughed. “Don’t worry, don’t worry. I plan to.”
“I seriously have no idea why people keep sending you those! You have more than enough.”
“No idea either, I guess people are just persistent.”
Kyoshi sighed, and turned her attention to Rangi’s hair. She needed to get the leaves and sticks out of it. “Was that all?”
Yun laughed. “No, I do have some-” He stopped.
Kyoshi picked a leaf off of the crown of Rangi’s head, then looked at him. Wondering why he went quiet. “Something else?”
Yun stared at Kyoshi with a wide-eyed, aghast expression. Kyoshi returned it, puzzled. Then she followed his eye’s path, and it led to where her hands were, on Rangi’s hair.
Is something wrong? I know her hair is a mess but I’m trying to fix-
Kyoshi’s heart sank and her hands stiffened, then she slowly pulled her hands away from Rangi’s head.
The hair! She thought, terrified. The hair is the most sacred part of a firebender! And….and I….. I-
She's gotten so used to touching and caressing Rangi’s hair for the past two weeks, she’d forgotten about how sacrilegious it was to touch in general, especially in public! And Kyoshi did just that, she had dishonored Rangi!
No wonder Yun was looking at her horrified, she basically just stabbed and cursed their friend all at once! No, worse!
Kyoshi was starting to spiral, but found herself being grounded by a soft hand holding her’s. 
“Why’d you stop?” Rangi asked her, completely unfazed, if not a little disappointed.
“I-I-” Kyoshi stuttered.
“Rangi, it’s your hair!” Yun said exasperated.
“That it is, I’m aware.” She closed her eyes with a small smile gracing her lips. Then she bowed her head forward, offering it to Kyoshi. “I really don’t mind, Kyoshi. If anything, you're helping me.”
If…if she says she doesn’t mind then…. Kyoshi’s heart began to pound as she resumed picking the foliage out of Rangi’s hair, gently. She went on in silence for what felt like eternity. It wasn’t until she removed the final stick from Rangi’s topknot, that she felt like she could breathe again.
“There,” Rangi smoothed her hair out as she stood up. “Much better.”
Kyoshi could feel her face blazing as she turned to Yun. He still looked shocked. Rangi may have said it was fine, but judging from Yun’s reaction, Kyoshi knew they did something that would’ve been considered taboo in the Fire Nation.
Then, as if coming out of his stupor, put his hands on his hips and laughed. “Well aren’t you two close!”
Kyoshi flinched. She and Rangi had agreed on keeping quiet about their relationship, mostly to not cause unnecessary trouble for them. Though, Kyoshi couldn’t help but feel like they weren’t exactly the best at hiding it. 
“Of course, we’re friends,” Rangi said with a smile, but she grabbed Kyoshi’s hand as she said it. Kyoshi’s face grew hotter at the contact, she was getting a lot of mixed messages at the moment. It was better if she just kept quiet. Let Rangi lead.
Yun laughed. “Well, we’re friends too. Does that mean I can touch your hair?”
Rangi returned the laugh, then said with a slight melody, “If you do, I’ll burn more than just your eyebrows off~!”
Kyoshi watched as her two friends talked and couldn't help but feel….that something was up. Perhaps….she should speak up.
“A-anyway, Yun, you said you had one more thing you needed to talk about?” Kyoshi interrupted.
Yun tapped his chin, in thought. “Well, I still need to work out the kinks. But I wanted to offer you something Kyoshi.”
“What is it?”
Yun grinned widely at her. “I want you to become my Official Avatar Companion!”
There was a long, stunned silence. After hearing the eighth croak of a frog squirrel nearby, Rangi was the first one to speak.
“What?” Rangi said in a dead tone.
Uh oh. Kyoshi thought. She was already envisioning a sequel to Rangi’s mood after she found out Kyoshi was going with them to the Fifth Nation.
“Of course, we’ll make sure Kyoshi is trained,” Yun put his hands up in a surrendering fashion to the firebender's oncoming wrath. “You have a real talent Kyoshi, a lot of raw power. I saw it on the iceberg. And I think learning to fight would be the best thing for you.”
Rangi was taking very audible deep breaths as she squeezed Kyoshi’s hand. Kyoshi could feel her shaking with anger. “No.”
“I think Kyoshi is the one who has to decide for herself, Rangi.” 
Rangi didn’t turn to Kyoshi, she just kept glaring at Yun. Kyoshi….didn’t know what to say. Becoming an Avatar’s companion was what so many people dreamed of, but seeing Rangi’s reaction….. Right now, Kyoshi’s primary dream was just having a happy girlfriend. 
“Yun, I-” Kyoshi started.
Yun put his hand up. “You don’t need to decide yet. Mull it over a bit. I really think this is the best, for all of us!” His grin grew wider. “We’ll be able to spend all our time together! You’ll be able to explore the world! And, most importantly, you’ll know how to defend yourself.” 
Kyoshi felt Rangi grow stock-still. 
Yun clapped his hands as he looked up at the sky. “Well, would you look at the time? I better get back to training. Kyoshi, Rangi, you should take the rest of the day off. You’ve both been working so hard.”
Kyoshi watched as Yun left them, rounded the corner, and walked out of sight. As soon as he left, she felt Rangi’s hand go limp, and Kyoshi quickly caught her as the rest of her body began to fall. 
“A-are you ok?”
Rangi groaned and then grimaced. “Yes, just…. a little tired.” 
Of course you ran up and down a mountain! “Let’s get you to your room,” Kyoshi said, as she held Rangi close to her, arms slung around each other’s waist. Kyoshi half carried the firebender as they walked.

Rangi sighed, “Kyoshi, I’m fine.”
Kyoshi ran the damp towel down Rangi’s cheek, trying to get what grime she could off. “Then why did you almost collapse?” 
Kyoshi had decided to put off discussing Yun’s proposition for now. Taking care of Rangi was more important at the moment. 
Rangi grimaced. The firebender didn’t like showing weakness. “My legs were sore from all the running,” she finally admitted. “And exhaustion just….. caught up to me.”
Kyoshi stopped the towel and looked down at Rangi. Rangi was out of her armor, dressed down to her sleeveless white tunic and shorts she wore underneath. She’d also taken her hair out of her topknot. Rangi needed a bath, but Kyoshi wanted to make sure the firebender had the  energy to make it to the bath first. 
Her eyes flitted down to the bandage on Rangi’s leg. It looked worse for wear, not because mountain grime had gotten to it, but because of sweat. Kyoshi grabbed the medkit from Rangi’s nightstand and knelt down by the firebender. 
“Kyoshi! Really, you don’t need-” Rangi started to protest as Kyoshi unwrapped the bandage.
Kyoshi pouted and glared up at Rangi, “Just let me help you.”
After a brief battle ran through her eyes, she sighed and looked away. Kyoshi didn’t know why she was putting up such a fight, she didn’t act this difficult when she first cleaned the wound.
Kyoshi inspected the wound, it didn’t look too bad. Which was good, it meant Rangi was taking care of it when Kyoshi wasn’t looking. Maybe in another week or two it’ll be healed…..
She got to work, cleaning the wound with soapy water, and then applying the salve onto it. She wouldn’t bandage the leg for now, because it’d just get wet when Rangi went to take her bath. But at least the wound would be cleaned until then.
As she worked the ointment in, she lightly blew on it to help it dry a little faster. As she did, she heard a strange noise. Kyoshi looked up, and saw Rangi gripping her armrests tightly, her face red as she looked away.
Kyoshi blinked, fascinate. She blew on Rangi’s leg again. Rangi’s upper body flinched as she suppressed another noise. Her face turned even more red. Then she looked down and gasped.
“Y-you’re doing that on purpose, aren’t you?” she accused.
Kyoshi didn’t really know what she was doing, but she liked the reaction. She felt her eyes sparkle as she gazed up at her glowing girl, and then she smirked.
Kyoshi blew air once more.
Rangi’s hands flew to Kyoshi’s mouth. The girl lost her balance and fell forward onto Kyoshi, who caught her and held her in a tight embrace as she laughed.
“S-stop that! Don’t laugh!” Rangi shouted, nuzzling her face into Kyoshi’s shoulder as she lightly smacked Kyoshi’s collarbone. It just made Kyoshi laugh harder. “Ugh? Are you secretly an airbender or something?”
“No? Why?” Kyoshi said between giggles.
“Because you were blowing so hard the air went up my-” Rangi cut off with a grumble.
“Your shorts?” Kyoshi reached down and lightly tapped the back of Rangi’s exposed thigh. Rangi squirmed at the touch.
“Stop! I-I’m sensitive right now!” Rangi cried.
Kyoshi felt a fire ignite in her, emboldened by the firebender on top of her, as well as Rangi’s scent permeating all around Rangi’s room. Kyoshi’s grin grew wicked. 
“Sensitive?” Her lips dove for the firebender’s neck, peppering it with a bunch of light kisses, and let her hands wander freely over Rangi’s body.
Rangi didn’t stand a chance. She was puddy in Kyoshi's hands. She cried and laughed and kicked her feet. She was both trying to wiggle away from Kyoshi and hold on tighter.  
After a minute, Kyoshi decided to stop her assault, to let Rangi recover. Rangi collapsed completely onto Kyoshi again, exhausted, remnants of giggle still escaping her lips.
Kyoshi kissed Rangi’s forehead a few times. Then she sniffed.
“You really need a bath,” she chuckled.
“Screw you,” Rangi smiled, breathless.
“Is that a threat or a promise?” Kyoshi joked back, then the two of them grew stiff as the words started to sink in. Kyoshi’s heart began to beat strong and steady like an o-daiko drum, each beat felt like it vibrated the two of them.
Maybe Kyoshi propositioned too soon? Even if it was just a joke…. Well, in this case it was only half a joke. 
Rangi, shifted her body. Her face was now facing Kyoshi. Her legs straddled one of Kyoshi’s thighs. “It can be,” she mumbled, hot breath hitting Kyoshi’s neck as she flexed her thighs.
Kyoshi looked down as the beats got louder and more steady. She saw the same steady look in Rangi’s eyes. They leaned in, both of their eyes looking at the other’s lips with heavy intent.
And then Kyoshi felt a new drumming sound encroaching on them.
Footsteps! 
“S-someone’s coming!” Kyoshi whispered hurriedly. 
Rangi shot up out of Kyoshi’s arms. Kyoshi went to follow, but Rangi shook her head and rolled her girlfriend under her bed instead. Both were thankful that Rangi’s raised bed was a lot bigger than Kyoshi’s. 
Rangi quickly started picking up the medical supplies, and hopped around on one foot, trying to play up her injury.
The footsteps stopped, there was a knock, and before Rangi could answer, the door opened.
Kyoshi watched as familiar looking red boots and robes walked into Rangi’s room. It was Hei-Ran, her mother. 
Kyoshi said a prayer, thanking all the spirits in existence that she and Rangi had stopped just in time. That she didn’t have to deal with Rangi’s mother witnessing Kyoshi ravaging her daughter on her bedroom floor.
“Mother, to what do I owe the pleasure?” Rangi asked, a little breathless. She hobbled on her foot, trying to hint at it as the reason, rather than Kyoshi having been the one to steal her breath away. 
It took a moment for Hei-Ran to respond, she was possibly analyzing her daughter. “You came back…..early.”
Rangi let out a sigh of air. “Yes, I took a shortcut through the mountains.”
“The mount-” Hei-Ran began, surprised. Then she recomposed herself. “I….I see. I assume there were no issues?”
“Other than the carriage breaking down, and that I desperately need a bath? No.”
“Erm, right, I can see that. Wait, just a moment, it broke down?” 
“Yes, it should be back sometime tomorrow from what they told me,” Rangi sighed. “Is there anything else you need, mother?”
Hei-Ran let out a harsh sigh herself. “Is it so wrong for a mother to check up on her daughter?”
Rangi didn’t respond, and another long silence followed. 
Hei-Ran was the one who broke the silence. “Get your rest, you’ll need to return to Hongcun Village tomorrow to retrieve a few packages.”
Rangi was silent again.
“Be sure to bring Kyoshi with you, it should make the trip a little easier.” Kyoshi flinched on instinct when she heard her name, but made sure not to move any muscle further.
“H-huh?!” was all Rangi could force out. 
“You heard me. She’s strong and can help carry them,” Hei-Ran said as she turned to leave. “Oh, and do you know where she is? I believe I heard Auntie Mui was looking for her. I know Yun said you two should take the rest of the day off, so I don’t believe it involves work. Just send her over when you see her next.” Then she left the room.
Kyoshi couldn’t help but feel like the older firebender knew she was hiding under the bed, despite being completely concealed. However, she chose to live on the path of ignorance, until new information was otherwise revealed. Ignorance was truly bliss as they say.
Kyoshi watched as Rangi got on her hands and knees and poked her head down so she could see Kyoshi. It was adorable. 
“The coast is clear,” she said with a warm smile. She held out her hand to help pull Kyoshi out.
“I think we should probably play it safe for the rest of the night,” Kyoshi said after she got out from under the bed. “It just seems luck isn’t on our side tonight.”
It was Rangi’s turn for a mischievous grin. “Suuuure. So what should we do now?” She approached Kyoshi with that hypnotic sway she loved to do, and grabbed her by the lapel, and gave her a swift kiss. Seeming more interested in pushing their luck farther rather than playing it safe.
Kyoshi let herself melt until Rangi pulled away. “I think you should take a bath,” Kyoshi said with a smile. Rangi responded with a pout. “I need to go see Auntie Mui.”
Rangi straightened up Kyoshi’s clothes. “I think you should take a bath first, then go see Auntie Mui. I’ll take mine later.”
Kyoshi looked at her confused. Rangi smirked, placing her hands on Kyoshi’s shoulders and stood on her tiptoes as she whispered in Kyoshi’s ear. “You smell like me.”
Kyoshi’s face blazed as she looked at Rangi. 
“Plus, your clothes got dirty, sorry,” Rangi didn’t sound sorry in the slightest, and Kyoshi didn’t mind surprisingly. Rangi started guiding Kyoshi’s dazed body to the door. “Now hurry up, the sooner you get washed, the sooner I can too.” And promptly pushed Kyoshi out of her bedroom door.

“Rangi, I have a question,” Kyoshi asked, bandaging Rangi’s leg. The firebender had just finished her bath, and she snuck into Kyoshi’s room a lot earlier than she usually was able to.
“Fire away,” she said.
“Was that a firebender joke?”
“Is that the question?” 
“No,” Kyoshi mumbled. 
“The pun wasn’t intended. Now, what did you really want to ask me?”
Kyoshi finished tying the bandage, and drummed her fingers on the exposed flesh of Rangi’s knee, wanting to avoid the shin that was cut. Kyoshi wasn’t able to keep the blush from rising in her cheeks, suddenly embarrassed. “How do….how do you keep your legs so smooth?” 
She saw Rangi tilt her head out of the corner of her eye.
“It’s just, I’ve heard people talk about Fire Nationals growing up. They mentioned how, despite your hair and topknot being super sacred, you never have hair anywhere else….. Like, uh, how men don’t have chest hair…..” She drummed her fingers on Rangi’s knee one more time. “And I noticed how smooth your legs were and…. Um….”
Kyoshi finally gathered the courage to look Rangi in the eye. Rangi looked down at Kyoshi with a small flush, and laughed.
“D-don’t laugh….”
“What? It’s funny!” 
“It’s a serious question! Is there some special volcanic razor you use or….”
Rangi inhaled a few times to catch her breath. “Ok, ok. Serious answer. Firebenders don’t shave, we just firebend it off.”
Oh, well that was simple. “Is that why you felt so confident about burning Aoma’s eyebrows off that day?” Kyoshi remembered the threat like it was yesterday. She’d also made the same threat to Yun earlier that day, but Kyoshi didn’t think it was a good idea to bring his name up. 
Rangi laughed again. “Yes. But not every firebender does that. It’s a preference. Though, I guess most of us do. You know, less pieces of us to catch on fire.”
Kyoshi laughed and leaned a cheek on Rangi’s knee. “So you guys like to be hairless except for your head?”
Rangi choked on her laughter, the back of her hand flew to her mouth, attempting to poorly cover up a rising blush. “Um, the head? Yes, but there’s….one other area that we don’t usually touch…..”
Kyoshi’s eyes raised in interest, this was new information to her. Something about as sacred as a Fire National’s hair? She better pay attention so she could be careful.
“I’m guessing it’s off limits to touch in public too?” Kyoshi asked innocently.
“K-Kyoshi, it’s, um, I’m pretty sure it’s off limits in public…. regardless of which Nation you’re from….” Rangi trailed off as her blush deepened. Heat felt like it was rolling off the girl which each shade she turned. 
A place that had hair, but no one could easily see on a Fire National, otherwise the hairless rumor wouldn’t have been spread. But it’s also a place no one usually saw in public in the Four Nations. Did such a place like that exist?
Rangi moved one of her hands and rested it on the inside of her thigh. Kyoshi stared, wondering if it was a hint.
Kyoshi was slow to connect the dots at times, but, by the spirits, when she connected them. She connected them. 
“Oh….oh!” Kyoshi exclaimed, her eyes widening in realization. “Oh it’s- Oh!”
Rangi cleared her throat, “Yes.”
“So….it’s also not-”
“I-it depends on the….. preference. Either the person’s own preference…..or their partner’s.” Rangi kept her head facing away, poorly trying to hide her blush, but she looked down to Kyoshi out of the corner of her eye. Kyoshi could see that Rangi really wanted to know her opinion.
Kyoshi stared up at her. Kyoshi didn’t really have a preference, she never even thought about having a preference before. The only thing she knew was that she wanted Rangi. All of her. 
The deep heart pounding started to radiate throughout Kyoshi again, as the fire inside ignited and started to burn bright. 
“I-I don’t really have a preference. I’ve never thought about it…..” Kyoshi could feel a flush spreading throughout her body like a wildfire. 
“I see, well do keep me in the loop, I’d love to know,” Rangi barely made her voice audible. 
The thrumming felt like it was getting stronger. Kyoshi attempted to swallow, but found she was unable to. Rangi was drying the room out with her heat. It was maddening, and it was igniting Kyoshi even more.
No, no we need to rest tonight. We need to play it safe. We already had a close call, luck’s not really on our side tonight. She tried to advise herself. 
Kyoshi stood up, and looked at Rangi sitting on her bed. Rangi looked up at her with half lidded eyes, bearing the same hunger Kyoshi felt inside. 
 Kyoshi promptly ignored her own advice.
Kyoshi shifted her body so it was in between Rangi’s legs, then she pushed the firebender all the way down onto the bed in a fierce kiss. The temperature in the room started to rise rapidly as they both clung and clawed at each other with abandon.
Kyoshi broke the kiss and tried to form words. “Can…can I touch-” Her eyes flickered downward.
“Yes!” Rangi hissed, then slammed her lips into Kyoshi’s. 
Kyoshi's hands found their way to Rangi's waist. Then her hips. Then she found Rangi's waistband and-
A knock at the door. Kyoshi stilled. No idea who it was, because the only person that it could be was underneath her at this very moment.
“Maybe if we ignore them they'll leave-ngh!” Kyoshi whispered, then muffled her cry as Rangi bit into her neck. Apparently Rangi wasn't as deterred by the new surprised guest as Kyoshi was.
Another wrap at her door. “Kyoshi? Are you awake?” Hei-Ran asked through the door.
That stopped Rangi. Kyoshi and Rangi looked at each other through panicked eyes. Then Kyoshi picked the firebender up, and threw her into the closet and shut the door.
She grabbed her night robe and ran to the door to greet Hei-Ran. 
“Yes, Mistress He-Ran?” Kyoshi all but squeaked out when she flung the door open. Despite her closeness with Rangi, she was more than a stranger to Hei-Ran herself. 
“Kyoshi, do you know where my daughter is?”Hei-Ran raised an eyebrow, but didn’t comment on the heat that was surely billowing out of Kyoshi’s room. 
“No, Mistress, I-I've been asleep! And it's the middle of the night, why do you think she'd be here?”
“I see,” Hei-Ran folded her hands in front of her. “My daughter seems to have gotten into the habit of….exploring at night lately.”  
Kyoshi felt clammy beads of of sweat go down her neck. “Oh, well, no. I didn’t know that…. I haven't seen her.”
“I see, well, I’ll keep looking then. If you do happen to see her, tell her I’m looking for her.”
She turned on her heel, and slowly walked down the hall. As soon as Kyoshi saw her turn. She counted to ten, and then shut the door and ran to the closet.
“Coast is clear, you can come out,” Kyoshi said, feeling deja vu.
Rangi was curled up into a ball. She laughed nervously as she took Kyoshi's hand.
“What's so funny?”
“This isn't my first time coming out of the closet.”
Kyoshi laughed and then sighed. “I guess this means you have to leave early?”
Rangi sighed. “I suppose.”
Kyoshi pulled Rangi into a tight hug.
“Hey now, you'll see me tomorrow, you'll have the whole day with me!”
“I know.” But I want you with me now.
Eventually they let each other go, and Rangi left, and Kyoshi returned to bed. She laid awake, too wound up from the events of the day, and contemplated what was next to come.

A/N: Hongcun Villageis made up for the story, I needed a place that was close but not Chin’s village (I know it’s not called Chin during Kyoshi’s timeline, it’s just easier to remember/spell TT0TT). Hongcun (宏村) DOES exist tho irl. It just means “Hong village”? I just chose it at random from a list (didn’t feel like trying to be creative like I did for Hunt jfklajf), but ironically enough, apparently it was a filming location Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon….. I say ironically because I believe CTHD is a big inspo for a lot of Rise of Kyoshi (such as the dust/mist/jet stepping techniques). So it all works out! :D
Also, gdi Rangi you lunatic! Sprinting over a mountain? I wonder how tall those mountains are? Let’s pretend they are taller than a 14er and aren’t the most foot friendly, to really sell the point home. (because you can climb Mount Quandary in like 4-7 hours, though it feels like eternity >_> -1000000/10 do not recommend climbing mountains against your will)

You hated that motherless son of a bitch. He was so annoying, smug, and just an asshole in general. Which made you want to kill Carl even more.
Every day, at six in the morning, he'd storm inside your prison and throw a plate of expired food at you, punch you in the face, and then lock you inside. Every. Fucking. Day.
Oh, and that was just the beginning, sometimes he'd feed you dog food.
You were sitting in the same chair, but this time there was a table in front of you. Cause, "Carl is so... nice." You heard the door unlock, expecting it to be Carl.
You said, "Come to feed me more dog food, Carl?" You laughed.
But you were surprisingly wrong. It was a man who looked a lot like Carl. And you most definitely knew this man. "Rick?" You questioned.
"He's been feeding you dog food?!" He asked furiously. You nodded.
He let out a breathy laugh. "I told him not to do that."
"So, you're Negan's daughter. I remember you. I remember that day."
'Negan's daughter.' God, it hurt so fucking bad. Everyone called you 'Negan's daughter.' Of course, sure, the Alexandrians probably didn't even know who you were, but it was the fact that most of your father's minions called you 'The boss' daughter' or 'Negan's daughter.'
"Yeah, I remember you too, Rick. I saw it. How scared you all were. And when my dad killed that Chinaman and that red-headed fool, I felt nothing. So, if that's what you wanna talk about, then done." You said bitterly.
Rick stared at you with a blank expression before moving closer to you. "He's Korean! And his name was Glenn, Glenn Rhee. And that red-headed fool's name was Abraham Ford! And YOU don't get to talk about them like that," he yelled.
He crossed his arms and leaned back against a dirty wall.
"We'll let you stay here. In Alexandria. Just listen to us. Answer what we want you to." You frowned. "Why should I? Huh?"
"You won't survive another minute out there. Carl saved you! We saved you," he shouted. "No! He kidnapped me. He didn't save me at all. And neither did you."
You sighed, "So stop. Just stop, Rick Grimes. You're not helping. I don't wanna stay in this garbage community. It's repulsing!"
"Tell me if you change your mind. Until then, we won't let you out. Not today, not tomorrow."
"How about the day after tomorrow?"
He chuckled but didn't speak any further. He left, locking the door after.

You were getting bored of staring at the same grey walls. "Fuck!" You shouted.
You grabbed your chair and threw it at the wall, which did not make a difference as the chair instead broke.
You laughed and threw your head back. Of course, it had to break.
And now your back was against the cold floor, you brought your knees up to your chest. "Happy, happy, happy..." You whispered to yourself.
"Daddy loves you, Y/N."
"No, no. Stop..." You cried out.
Blood, sweat, tears, starve.
Jokes, money, friends, gone. Dead.
Around, soaked gown, cry, scream.

"Stop! No. Stop, I can't—" You're heart was racing, and sweat dripped down your forehead, maybe you were dying, you were too young, your hands were trembling, "No, no—" You couldn't breathe, it only meant one thing.

"No, you don't!" You yelled repeatedly.
You blinked rapidly, but you felt like giving in. Sleep, die. Sleep, die. Sleep, die.
You heard the door open, or maybe it was your imagination. Yeah, that's it. Right? Nothing more. Nothing less. Nothing special.

"She's waking up! Doc," You tried sitting up, but someone stopped you. "Hey, take it easy, sweetheart."
What even happened? I don't know...

You looked around the room. You were in a rather uncomfortable bed. The walls were painted a disgusting shade of green.
"No," you groaned. Your eyes were met with another. A singular blue eye. Fuck, it's him. "Damnit, it's—"
"—Me. Surprised, Y/N?" He chuckled.

So, you had a panic attack. It was not much of a surprise to you, but it was to Carl. "Wow, I knew you were fucked up in the head, but panic attacks too?"
You felt a bit ashamed. So much was done for you, and you didn't even deserve all this 'protection and care.' "Just cause you're a total mess doesn't mean I immediately care about you. I hate you." He confessed. You smiled.
"Why are you smiling?" He asked curiously.
You grabbed the glass vase. It was to your right. You jammed it in Carl's arm, making him scream in pain and fall back. "You fucking bitch!"

Levi let out a love-filled sigh as he watched you work. He saw you in this bright and beautiful light, you were practically glowing as you moved around the room. He wanted all your attention, but you were working in his shop. He pouted a little at not having you so he acted before he even thought about what he was doing. He’d reached out and grabbed your dress causing you to stop in your tracks.
You looked down at Levi in his chair and saw his blush. You smiled sweetly before leaning over and kissing him. “Cute.”
He whined. “Tch, what’s with the kiss? People can see.”
“You wanted my attention, so I gave it.”
He looked away and groaned. “You read me too well.”
You hummed a laugh. “Do you need a drink or anything?”
“No. I’m okay.”
You took his hand holding your dress and squeezed it. “Call me if you need me.”
He blushed and looked away. “I need you.”
You hummed a laugh. “I need you too. I have to work though, okay.”
He huffed. “I know. We need to make money.”
You winked at him and then started working again. You smiled as you served customers and enjoyed chatting with a few. You kept glancing over at Levi to check if he was okay. You frowned when you heard a few women giggling and talking about the handsome Captain. You stared at them as they encouraged each other to approach Levi and ask him out on a date. You weren’t the jealous type or possessive, but you found it irritating how they were going after Levi. You tried convincing yourself that it was because Levi would find it annoying because he doesn’t like people making a big deal over his scout past.
Levi looked up when a young woman approached him. “Can I help you?”
She blushed and fiddled with her dress. “I’m a big fan of you, Captain Levi.”
“You’re a fan of killing?”
She gasped. “N-no, of you.”
“But I was paid and trained to kill.”
She whined. “I just like how strong you are.”
He hummed a bit. “Right.”
“Oh, your bolo tie is off.”
He looked down. “It is?”
She reached over, leaned closer to him, and hoped he’d smell her perfume. “I’ll fix it.”
He reached up and took over. “I can manage.”
She smiled a little. “You got awarded that by our Queen, right?”
He nodded. “Yes.”
“You wear it well.”
Levi hummed in thought. “I don’t like it too much because it has bad memories.” He blushed hard. “But my girlfriend says I look handsome with it.”
She gulped hard. “Girlfriend?”
Levi nodded. “Yeah.” He looked over at you and called your name. “Could you fix my bolo?”
You walked over to him and knelt before him making him blush. You reached up and fixed his bolo tie for him. “There you go.”
Levi took your hand and placed it against his cheek. “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.”
The woman flirting with Levi said your name in a mocking tone. “You’re dating the Captain?” She smirked as you stood up. “I should have known you’d worm your way into his heart. You were always the type to go after all the men.”
You smiled softly at her. “Can I get you anything? Is there a certain tea you want?”
She rolled her eyes. “I’m talking to the Captain.”
Levi stood up and walked over to you. “You were pestering me. Now, if you aren’t buying anything, please leave.”
She laughed nervously. “I’m here for the Captain.”
“I don’t want you here.” He put his arm around you. “You insulted the woman I care deeply about and want to spend my life with. I don’t want you here.”
She pointed at Levi. “She’s using you. She’s a selfish disgusting cow.”
Levi stormed closer to her. “Tch, you take that back right now.”
She cowered a little. “It’s the truth.”
“Tch, you’re about as appealing as not being able to shit for months. No one in their right mind would want to be with a disgusting human like you.” He pointed to the door. “Get. Out.”
She welled up and hurried out the door with her friends. “So stupid!”
You smiled a little. “Thank you, Levi.”
He turned and looked at you. “She was spouting a load of shit.”
“I didn’t lead anyone on. I’ve only been with one man physically. I just…I’m just nice to people.”
Levi wiped your tears away. “I believe you, okay? I believe you and trust you.” He kissed you and smiled. “She was just jealous and spiteful that you’re with me and not her. I would never want a woman like her. I want you and only you.”
You mewled in delight at how affectionate Levi was being. “Can Bo and I come over tonight?”
Levi’s cheeks burned. “Yes.”
“Great.” You kissed his cheek. “I’ll make a pot of tea for us.”
“Thanks.” He limped over to the counter and started serving customers as you made a nice pot of tea. He handed a bag over and gave a small smile. “Thank you, have a nice day.” He gasped and blushed when you hugged him from behind. “H-Hi.”
You covered Levi’s shoulders in kisses. “Hi.”
“You seem happy.”
“I am.” You leaned and looked at Levi’s face. “Are you?”
He nodded shyly. “Yeah.”
You squeezed him for a moment before releasing him. “Enjoy a cup of tea.”
“Thank you.”
As the shop went quiet, you sat on a stool and sipped your tea. You smiled as Levi petted Bo and then started cleaning the shop up. “Need help?”
He smiled at you. “Just stay there and be you. I normally clean because I enjoy it, but now I like it because I have a cute view.”
You winked at Levi. “Thank you. So, I was wanting to talk to you about physiotherapy.”
“Yeah?”
You nodded. “It’s getting warmer so I was thinking we could go swimming. It’ll be a great help to your leg.”
“Sounds good.” He walked over to you. “I would appreciate the help.”
“Great.”
He took your hand and played with it. “So, I want to take you somewhere. Can we go tomorrow?”
You nodded. “Whenever you’re ready, we’ll go.”
“Great. It’ll be a walk, so there will be stops along the way because I will need to rest.”
“That’s okay.”
He kissed you and blushed a little. He turned and hurried off to start cleaning again. “I really like being with you.” He sighed as he thought about everything. “I’ll try and be a better boyfriend.”
“You’re a great boyfriend.”
He looked over at you. “I don’t know about that.” He stopped cleaning and sighed. “I don’t know what I’m doing.”
“I think you’re doing wonderful.”
“Thank you.”
You fussed Bo when he came over to sit next to you. “You heard anything from Falco and Gabi recently?”
Levi hummed in thought. “A few letters, but they are exploring right now. Tch, pair are kids still.”
You giggled. “You’re like their dad. You fit into the role well.”
Levi blushed a little. “I just seem to do well with looking after them. I feel bad for a lot because they’ve lost their parents and are made to fight in a fucking war. I wanted to help them.” He released a long sigh. “A lot of them don’t need me anymore.”
“I need you.”
He gazed at you. “I need you too.”

You walked with Levi as Bo led the way. You kept glancing over at your man to make sure he was okay. He was holding onto your arm to make sure he was supported as he walked. You were happy to help him out as you walked together. You weren’t sure where you were going, but you packed a picnic full of food and tea just in case.
The path was long but well-maintained. Along the path grew flowers full of life and lush trees with birds singing from them. The sun wasn’t too strong with a light covering of clouds now and then. A gentle breeze drifted down the path and ruffled the leaves in the trees. It was peaceful and welcoming the further you walked together as a couple.
Bo was happily running ahead then slowing down to sniff the area. He would pause a moment to look back at Levi and you. He’d trot over and circle Levi a little as if he was checking on him to ensure he was okay. He’d let out a little bark before running off ahead and looked back at Levi like he was leading him down a safe path.
Levi chuckled at Bo. “He’s trying to help me, huh?”
“He’s caring for you. Looks like he’s trying to tell you where to walk.”
“Thank you, Bo.”
With Bo leading the way you both continued to walk along the path. When you gazed upon the gate ahead you knew instantly where you were. Nerves bubbled through you as you walked up to the grand gates of the military cemetery. The important date that Levi wanted to take you on was to go see his fallen comrades. You were honoured that you were invited to go with him to see them as it was Levi’s way to show how serious he was about you.
Levi paused in front of the gates and retrieved his key. “They give all those who have lost someone a key to ensure it stays clean, loved and respected.”
“It looks beautiful.” You looked at the large cemetery to see many white gravestones, one large one and a few benches and cleaning stations. “Will Bo be okay here?”
“Yes.” He unlocked the gate and pushed it open. “I’ll show you to a few of them.”
“Wonderful.”
He smiled a little. “First is my old team, then it’ll be my two best friends and lastly it’ll be my three older friends.”
You gave him a reassuring smile. “Lead the way.”
He took your arm again and started walking with you. “We’ll sit by my friends when we eat your lovely picnic.”
“Sounds good.”
He walked through the graves until he reached four together. “These four were in my special task force. Oluo Bozado, Petra Ral, Gunther Schultz and my second-in-command Eld Jinn. All of them were incredible soldiers.”
You placed the basket down and bowed. “Lovely to meet you all.” You smiled at Levi. “I’ll be right back.”
Levi frowned as you hurried off. “Where are you going?”
You ran to the cleaning station and grabbed a bucket of water and other things to clean up the graves. You ran back and knelt in front of the graves and started cutting the overgrown grass. “Does that look okay?”
Levi nodded. “Perfect. Thank you so much.”
You swapped the gardening things out for cleaning materials. You scrubbed the graves clean and made sure the names and scout symbols were clear. You grinned at your work and packed up everything. “They look good.” You stood up and gathered your picnic things and the cleaning materials. “Do you need a moment with them?”
Levi smiled softly. “I’ve said my piece to them. I want to see my friends.” He walked ahead and petted Bo as he walked along Levi’s side. He moved down the rows of graves until he reached Farlan and Isabel. “Here they are.” He smiled sadly. “These two are always with me. Whenever I see birds I think of these two.”
You knelt and started trimming the grass around the two graves. “You ran with these two for a while, right?”
“I grew up with Farlan and Isabel joined us much later on.” He placed his hand on Isabel’s grave. “She was just a kid to me and I first met her falling through my doorway as he protected a bird.” He hummed a laugh. “She was so sweet and energetic with a lot of confidence.”
“She sounds like a lot of fun.”
“She was.” He chuckled. “Farlan though, he was a rock to me. He reminded me to let my emotions show, how to be polite and to make friends. He helped me be a functioning human.”
You gazed at Levi. “He did a terrible job.”
“Tch, cheeky little shit.”
You snorted a laugh and stood up. “I’m just playing with you.”
He pouted. “I know. You’ll have to make it up to me though.”
“Oh?”
He glanced at you. “Kiss.”
You leaned over and kissed him. “Better?”
Levi dropped his cane and wrapped his arms around you. He yanked you against his body and crashed his lips against yours. He slipped his tongue into your mouth and moaned in delight as you both shared a deep and passionate kiss. Normally Levi kept the kissing and intimacy behind closed doors but because the place was empty of people he could kiss you with all the passion in his heart. He clung to you so tightly and tried to push all his emotions into the kiss.
He pulled from your lips and panted. “Fuck, I love you.”
Your eyes widened. “You do?”
Levi blushed hard. “I uh…that slipped out…”
“Do you mean it?”
He whined a little. “I umm…yes…”
You cupped Levi’s face. “Levi?”
He locked eyes with you. “Yes.”
“I love you.”
Levi’s eyes lit up in delight. “I love you too. I’ve loved you for so long.” He lowered his head. “I know it’s fast, but I’ve fallen hard and fast for you.”
You tilted and moved your head so Levi would look at you. “Me too. Levi, I fell for you hard and fast. How could I not? You’re so wonderful.”
He hummed a laugh. “You are an incredible woman, I am so lucky to have you in my life.”
You hugged Levi and closed your eyes so you could enjoy the moment. You released a long sigh and parted from him. “Let’s see the last lot of your friends.”
He smiled. “Yes.”
You picked up his cane and handed it over. “Here, love.”
“Thank you.”
You grabbed the cleaning things and the picnic basket and began walking with Levi to the big grave. You looked up at the grave and felt impressed by it. “Erwin Smith.”
Levi hummed. “Next to him with a large grave as well as Hange Zoe and then my friend here Mike Zacharias.”
You bowed to them. “Lovely to meet you three. I’ve heard the most about you three.” You knelt in front of Mike and felt emotional. “I’m so sorry you died alone and so very scared.”
Levi smiled sadly. “I can’t even imagine the pain he went through. We barely found anything of him left.”
You looked up at Levi to see he was fighting tears. “Oh.” You stood up and held him. “Oh, Levi.”
He clung to you tightly. “I’m sorry. I’m trying to be strong but it’s hard.”
“It’s okay to cry. I want to cry as well.”
“They just kept dying.” He sobbed hard. “No matter what I did.” His voice cracked when he said your name. “They just kept dying.”
“I know, darling, I know.”
He shook in your arms as he whimpered your name. “I’m sorry.”
You rubbed his back. “Don’t be sorry. Just let it out. I’m right here.” You held him for a while as he sobbed and felt his legs buckle. “Oh, do you need to sit?”
“Y-Yes.”
You lowered Levi down to the ground and sat with him. “I’ve got you. I’ve got you.”
Levi lay in your arms and let himself be held by you as he cried his heart out. He let out all the pain of working hard and pushing his body to its limits just to he could save as many people as possible, but it was never enough. He had torn himself apart for other people. He felt so weak even though he was told he was the strongest there was to offer. It was then he realised that too much was expected of him. He knew a lot was asked of it, but over the years he’d slowly come to terms with the expectations others had placed on him. He was tired, but at least he had you now. You were someone that didn’t expect the world from him, just his love back.
He sniffed a little as he thought about you and his life with you. Everyone always wanted something from him. His fans wanted a piece of his for fame and fortune. His past comrades needed his strength for different reasons. He knew his comrades cared deeply for him. He never once doubted any of them and their friendship, dedication and loyalty but he often felt like that bond was tested by what they needed from him and that was his unusual strength.
You walked into his life and all you did was give instead of take. You gave help, you gave him food, you gave him kindness and you gave him your heart. You helped him out more than anyone had done before and he found the walls he’d put up to protect himself were just falling apart. He was himself with you. He was the true Levi. For so long he didn’t know who he was. Was he a Captain? Was he the blade of the scouts? Was he an Ackerman? Was he humanity’s strongest soldier? Was he an unstoppable killing machine?
To you though, he was just Levi. He was this sweet man that you loved fully. He was this man who loved cooking, cleaning and tea. He was this man who suffered from nightmares and pains in his body that you soothed. He was this man who would get easily shy whenever you flirted. He was just a man to you. A man that you loved with all your heart and soul. He liked that. He liked how you saw him and loved him. He liked the man you saw him as. He was beginning to like himself.
He felt tired in your arms, but not emotionally or mentally. He was tired from crying too much and his leg was playing up a little. “Mm.”
You played with his hair. “Tired?”
“How did you know?”
You hummed a laugh. “I just know you.”
He lifted his tired head and gazed into the eyes he loved staring into so much. “I know it’s a bit dirty and odd, but would you lie with me?”
“Sure! I have a blanket for us.”
He chuckled as he watched you open your bag and get out a thick blanket. “You’re prepared for anything.”
“I am!” You lay the blanket down with Levi’s help. “There, perfect for lying on and you don’t get dirty.”
He shifted onto the blanket and slipped his shoes off. “Perfect.”
“Wanna use my lap as a pillow?”
He blushed at your suggestion and his own idea. “Actually, I want to lie with you.”
You shifted on the blanket and lay back. “This is nice.”
He looked up at the clouds and watched the change. “It is.”
You looked over at Levi and saw the redness under his eyes. “Have you been sleeping badly?”
He hummed in response. “Yeah.”
You reached over and caressed his cheek. “Poor thing.”
He turned his head and looked over at you. “I suffer from nightmares, but whenever I’m near you they seem to stop. It’s like you chase them away.”
You smiled softly. “Perhaps we should share a bed.”
“That’d be lovely if I got to hold you all night.”
“I would like that.” You rolled onto your side and stared at him. “You’ve been through so much in such a short time.”
“Yeah.”
You placed your hand on his chest. “I’m so proud of you.”
Levi’s eyes widened in shock. He’d never heard those words before and to hear someone he loved same them was like a tremor of emotions went through him. He was happy but also felt like he didn’t deserve such praise. He felt so lost but you’d found him so easily and you kept guiding him along in his confusing life. He was so happy.
He stared at you. “Say that again, please?”
You shuffled closer to him. “I’m so proud of you, Levi. You’ve done so well.” You leaned over and kissed him. “You’re amazing.”
He welled up at your loving words and felt himself healing a little. “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome. I mean it though.”
“Thank you.”
You reached over and traced your thumb under his bottom lip. “Damn, you’re so handsome.”
“I…I’m not…” He blushed hard. “Th-thank you.”
You hummed a laugh. “Well done for accepting a compliment.”
“I’m trying.”
“It’s hard.” You lay on your back and sighed. “I know I shouldn’t compare, but I do know what it’s like to not be satisfied with yourself. There is always some fault.”
Levi studied you. “I see no faults.”
You giggled and looked over at him. “That’s because you love me.”
“True.” He grabbed your arm and yanked you onto him. “But it’s also because you are more wonderful than you think.”
You looked down at Levi. “Thank you.”
He cupped the back of your head and brought you down onto his body. “Now, it’s time for me to be the big spoon.”
You lay against Levi and felt his heart beating strongly against your face. “Mm, you’re not as nervous as you used to be, that’s good.”
He squeezed you. “Means I’m comfortable with you.”
“Yes.”
He held you close against him as he thought about everything and his relationship with you. He started thinking about your body against his and a thought hit him. He called your name and whined. “I need to tell you something.”
“What is it?”
He sighed. “I’m a virgin.”
You leaned up and looked down at Levi. “That’s okay.”
He stared at you. “That’s not off-putting?”
“Why would it be? I love you and there is nothing wrong with being a virgin. We all start somewhere.”
“I just don’t want our first time to be shit.”
You leaned down and kissed him. “I’ll guide you through it all. Communication is key.”
He nodded. “Yes.”
“We’ll go at your pace. Plus, practice makes perfect. If the first time is not great for you, then we’ll keep trying.”
Levi purred. “I’ll make sure you enjoy yourself.”
You giggled. “That’s the spirit. Just know it’s okay to worry a bit, but it’ll be okay.”
“Thanks.”
You kissed him and lay against him again. “You’re too cute sometimes.”
Levi chuckled. “Thanks…wait…you’re not a virgin?”
“No.”
“Last boyfriend?”
You hummed. “Yeah, wasn’t the best. We’ll be better though.”
Levi growled a little. “Tch, fucker.”
“Don’t get jealous.”
“I’m…not…ugh.” He huffed. “It’s fine. I’m going to be your last.”
You patted his chest. “Damn right.”
Levi closed his eyes and hummed. “Tired.”
“Rest well. I’m napping too.”
Levi yawned and then slowly fell asleep to the sound of the birds, the breeze, Bo’s snoring and your breathing. He was happy and didn’t have a single nightmare during his nap.

The Jacket

Warning: fluff, bad writing, one cuss word, a tiny mention of sexual activity, kissing  
Word count: 1.4k 
You don’t know how it happened. One day you were with your best friend Liz eating lunch then the next you and her were sitting at the Hellfire table. You were next to Eddie Munson with his arm around you. WHATT you never even talked to a boy and now one is eating with his arm around you. After that day Eddie was always around you. He would meet you at your locker in the morning, would walk you to your classes, when he saw you at lunch with Liz sitting at the side, he would grab your food and bring it to his table, drive you home. It was crazy he had “adopted” you as Liz said but you didn’t mind it, he was cute and funny. About a month later he asked you out on a date you said yes, well stared at him for 5 minutes and then said yes with the reddest face ever but he thought it was cute. 
“Good morning pretty girl” Eddie beamed when you hoped into his van. “Moring Eddie” you whispered with blush covering your cheeks, you still aren’t used to Eddie and his pet names. “Going shy on me already it is barely 7 in the morning” he teased. You hid yourself in your hands “No No No come out of there it is just me your boyfriend” he cooed. He let you calm down then said, “So what did you bring me for breakfast” “Um a bagel and orange juice” “Oo and its warm too” The rest of the drive was you feeding Eddie his bagel with some small talk and his music playing in the background. He loved it when you talked, it took you awhile to get comfortable enough to freely talk to him before you would only speak when spoken too and that would be two maybe three words. Now you are going on a full-on rant about how someone on the show you watched pick the wrong guy.  
When he pulled into a parking spot, he quickly ran to open your door with a bow “M’lady” there it was again he thought your face turned a bright red. Before he could admire you a gust of wind made you shiver “Oh your cold let me get a jacket” your eyes widen “No I have one on then you will be cold” “You have this thin little thing on you” as he pinches your cardigan “I can’t have my pretty girl freeze” you face heated up his pretty girl. He went back into his van a grabbed a black hoodie from the back. “It might smell a little, but it will keep you warm” he said when he sniffs it. He was right, it did smell but like him that musky scent with a hint of cigarettes and a bit more of a weed smell, but it was him Eddie your Eddie. He put it on you somehow your already red face got redder and hotter, you were in Eddies jacket his smell as all over you, your only thought in your mind was Eddie.  
You walked into school as normal, your head down holding Eddie’s arm as you walked to your locker. Liz was at hers when she saw you and ran over to you, she started talking about your show last night but all you can do is nod, you have Eddie’s sweater. You were released from your thoughts when Eddie spoke “I got to do some business really quick I will be back in time to walk you to class” he kissed your cheek and was on his way. “Sooooo” Liz started “New hoodie” “It’s Eddie” you said quietly “I can tell it smells just like him” she joked “He really has a hold on you” “What do you mean... is that bad” “Girl I was talking to you about the show last night and you didn’t even say a word to me” “Sorry I am just in shock I'm wearing his sweater” “I know you are sweetie your face says it all” 
Just like Eddie said he was with you before first period started. You got stares and whispers you never noticed before, especially not now, while wearing Eddie’s sweater. But Eddie did, he always did. He didn't mind when they were for him but if they were for you, he was livid. That’s how you guys started. You both had 5 period English together he was drawn to you by your beauty and shyness. Being in the back of the class he goes unnoticed and hears all the conversation. He can normally tune them out except when your name was heard. “Y/N is probably so easy” “Hell nah she is too shy” “Exactly, no one wants a shy girl” I do he thinks “Have you seen her with any guys around no right so any male attention she gets she will want” all of those stupid Jocks agreed. From that moment on Eddie has sworn to protect you. That day at lunch he found you and Liz sitting in a tree eating lunch. You were talking to her freely with no worries, when he walked up to you guys you looked at him with wide eyes then at Liz then back down Liz snickered. She knew of your crush on Eddie but you being you would never make a move. After he invited you both to sit with him at lunch, you looked at Liz with eyes pleading no, but Liz decided it was time to move and said yes. He extends an arm towards you, Liz was proud when you took it, then he carried your bag and lunch, yes, your face was red. He watches those jocks faces drop when they saw you with him, even more when he puts his arm around you. He saw your face the way you stared at Liz with wide eyes and blush on your cheeks, he loves that face. 
The day went by way too fast for your liking, you knew at the end of the day you would have to give him his sweater back. The warmth would be gone. When the finally bell rang you walked slowly to your locker in hopes that time would slow down. Before you know it, you saw Eddie’s head of hair over the sea of students. When you came into view he opened his arms wide for you, you snuggled into his warmth “You ready to go” go no you thought “Yeah sure” you said more quietly than usual Eddie picked that up fast “Are you ok, did anyone say something or do something because tell me and I-” “No Eddie no one said anything I’m just tired” you lied. He eyed you suspiciously “Mk whatever you say pretty girl- ah don’t hide from me” he caught your hands before they covered your face. He kissed your red nose “Let’s get you home tired girl”  
The car ride was quite just music playing and you trying to soak up the last moment in Eddie’s sweater. Eddie knew something was up your rarely talked today which is normal for you, but you normally talk more than you did today. He tried to make small talk out of you, but you were in your own world. Your face slightly dropped when he pulled up to your house its time. “So, I guess you will be needing your sweater back” you sighed. You began to take it off when “Nah” Eddie said “It looks super cold from walking here to your door and I don’t need my girl being an ice pop plus it looks really good on you so kept it” he flirted towards the end. “Really” he saw your mood change instantly now he knows. “Yes of course” you had the biggest smile he has ever since. “Thank you” you beamed then did something you never did before you kiss him, on the lips. Your first kiss. He was shocked and so were you. “I'm so sorry I was just excited and-” you were cut off by Eddie’s lips “It’s ok I been waiting to do that” he hummed into your lips. You smile into the kiss before you pulled away “You better get going before my dad shows up” “One more” he pleaded ugh those eyes “Yes” you caved. The next morning, he picked you up and you came running out with his sweater on and a big smile that he was ready to kiss.

“I’m going to ask you again. Am I dead in your universe?”
“Yes.”
The words sever the strings of courage that had been holding you upright, and you sway sideways, prompting Gold Steve to get up and help you sit on the bed. He drags his chair over for himself and leans forward on it, eyeing you with the care and concern of a person who has no idea how to fix what they’ve just broken.
“I didn’t want to tell you, not if I could avoid it,” he says. “Part of why I’m here is to reverse what happened, if we can.”
“What?” you gasp, shaken. He’s hopped universes to--
Gold Steve swiftly reaches over to take your hand with an encouraging squeeze. “It happened to a lot of people. More than you could ever imagine. Please don’t be upset, you’re--” He breaks off, looking at you with exasperated warmth. You feel buffeted from all sides, your ability to master your emotions at its lowest ebb. This man would throw himself into any void if he thought it would save a life, but this?
“Did you seriously just try to make me feel better by saying more people died?”

Chapter Five
Tony seems reinvigorated by your conversation, and he heads back to his lab. Either he’s too caught up in his conclusions or it’s too dark in the room for him to see how shaken you truly are, but you’re grateful. You… need a minute.
You lay back in the chair with your eyes shut, trying to find a way to calm your racing mind so you can sleep. All that does is swirl your thoughts deeper, a cyclonic storm front being fed a steady diet of awful futures and horrible alternatives. Eventually, you stand up and head toward the residence hallway.
Adrenaline makes your knock louder than you’d intended, but now that you’ve done it, there’s no taking it back. You tell yourself that if Gold Steve doesn’t answer after this one try, you’ll give up and try to talk to him during the dayti--
The door opens, faster than you would have expected it would if he had been asleep.
Before he can say anything, your fear bubbles over and you say, “Am I dead?”
His eyes close tightly for a second, and he drops his head. “What time is it?” he asks, his voice low and wary.
“Sometime after three. I can’t sleep, I--”
“Shh, it’s-- Come in? This isn’t a hallway conversation.”
The implication that it’s not a dining or rec room conversation floats between you for a second before you nod, and he backs up to let you in. As you suspected, his bed is still made. There’s a paperback open next to the wrinkles in the coverlet from where he’d been sitting, and a lamp is on. Gold Steve opens a folding chair and then sits on it, meaning he wants you to sit on his bed. You hesitate, and he scrubs a hand over his face.
You have a sneaking suspicion that the only reason Steve Rogers would sit down before a guest in his space is to make that guest pick the more comfortable option. Even so, it feels too intimate to sit on his bed, so you stay standing, wrapping your arms around yourself for support.
Steve’s brows furrow when he sees how uncomfortable you are, but he doesn’t push. Instead, in a soft voice that makes your heart ache, he says, “What makes you ask something like that, ‘Dine?”
“Tony told me about his breakthrough, the molecular fingerprint thing. He didn’t go into the why, but said if he was looking to send someone through dimensions, he’d want to use an anchor.” You hope you make sense, because even after a half hour, comprehension of what Tony had explained to you is slipping through your mental fingers. “He thinks you used me as an anchor, and that you did it because I don’t exist in your universe anymore. That way you could show up before whatever bad thing happened to kill me.” 
His expression is both stunned and regretful. It makes you wonder what your Steve’s expression will look like when that bad thing happens sometime in the near future. The room suddenly feels very cold, and the thing you’re asking may be inflammatory, but it won’t warm anything up.

“Yes.”

“Are you upset at the thought that I’d do it just for you?” Gold Steve whispers your name, your real one, the one almost no one uses, and the tone of his voice leaves nothing to the imagination.
“Don’t,” you plead, pulling your hand away, pressing it to your chest over the heart his counterpart lives in. “You asked me if I had feelings for him, and I do. But whatever difference between our universes that brings you here capable of looking at me with so much affection… That hasn’t happened to him, okay? It’s confusing, and in a really awful way it’s making me dissatisfied with the life I have.” You can’t stay seated anymore, so you get up, backing into the blank space beside his bed where a second nightstand would go. Gold Steve’s giving you his full attention, and the words spill forth, all of them, before you can stop yourself. “And now you’re telling me I’m going to die, that a lot of people are going to die, and you’re you, so obviously it’s something terrible enough to move time and space, and I just--”
Steve gets up abruptly, the fierceness of his action knocking the chair sideways. It collapses down, but he doesn’t stop pacing away from you, the stiffness of his posture illustrating how upset he is.
“I don’t know how to do this anymore,” he grits out, facing the wall across the room from you, head down.
“Do what?”
“Be less than honest with you.”
You don’t feel unsafe, but you do feel unsure. Still, this is a version of Steve, and you love him, even if you aren’t in love with this him. In a way, you feel like you haven’t earned being in love with Gold Steve. The two of you have slotted into some sort of emotional shorthand by accident, and it’s fucking you up.
“So, be honest.”
“You’re going to wish I hadn’t been.”
“Sometimes life is like that, Steve,” you say. It’s the first time you’ve called him that, and you watch the name strike him from behind like a literal cupid’s arrow-- because when Gold Steve turns around, it’s obvious how much it means to him.
“You’re right,” he sighs. “Something terrible happened. We weren’t even sure if we could fix it, but the pieces fell into place…” He looks down at the floor, and the regret painted across his features is somehow beautiful in the half-light. “The cost was too high.”
The two of you abide in the shadow of those words for a moment before he continues.
“We came up with a way to fix it. Tony had already mostly designed the device; he was confident that every Tony Stark could create it, given time. The real question was whether to risk sending me to a universe without him. That’s where you come in.”
“Tony’s the one who got me this job,” you realize aloud. “Isn’t that risky? How could you know every version of me worked with Tony?
“We didn’t have a lot of time to worry about that. There’s more, ‘Dine, but I need you to keep this to yourself. It’s important.”
“I won’t tell anyone if you ask me not to, but… what are you afraid of?”
“That someone would stop me from going back.”
Your heart clenches in your chest. Gold Steve’s expression is best described as dire. “What happened?” you whisper, genuinely frightened. By all reports, Steve had been ready to die in Sokovia, and that had been the latest in a long line of similarly life-threatening events he’d faced with stoic bravery.
He steps toward the middle of the room, the angular shadows from the lamp tracing across his chest. “The… event that took the lives of so many people, it was made possible by a set of powerful artifacts. They’ve been hidden across the universe, and one of them is held on a planet that asks a horrible sacrifice.” Gold Steve falls silent, and you can’t tell whether he’s searching for words or fortitude.
Did he say ‘planet??’ you think to yourself. Aloud, you say, “The one whose cost was too high?”
His smile is lopsided. “Yeah.” He avoids your gaze, looking around the room before seeming to make a decision. “Out of necessity, I lied about some things. My coming here wasn’t a mistake, and we do have this complex, with some variations in the architecture.”
“What don’t you want to tell me, Steve?”
Gold Steve had been avoiding your eyes until you said his name, and the look he gives you makes your breath catch.
“I didn’t tell you that story about loss because I wanted anything from you. I need you to believe that,” he says hoarsely. It’s deflection, but it’s also maybe a confirmation of the thing you hadn’t allowed yourself to conclude.
Imagining yourself as someone he’s loved and lost is too much for you right now. All you can do is nod.
“We gathered up a team, went to get the... artifacts I told you about, and when we all came back, we didn’t all come back. To get one of the stones, there’s a--” He breaks off. “Anyway, we weren’t going to let that stand. We don’t leave anyone behind-- in fact, those were the exact words used. When Tony made a joke about that in Romania…”
“Steve, it’s three in the morning,” you whisper, unable to follow. “I want to understand--”
“No, you’re right,” he says, tone turning confident. The team leader in him is taking over. “Head to bed, we can talk another time.”
It’s only once the door opens and you both move through to the hallway that your mind finally realizes something. It’s an effort to keep your voice quiet.
“Oh my God, Steve, if you get this right, if you reverse what happened, do you get her back?” It’s close to vocalizing a shared secret, the secret: that you are the One Who Got Away.
He closes his eyes and nods. “If we reverse what happened, she comes back, yes.”
“Oh, I hope it works!” you breathe, ducking under his arm to give him an impulsive half hug. Gold Steve tenses up for a second before that arm slings around your waist and squeezes, and he sets his chin against your hair briefly.
“Thank you,” he says, pulling in a breath as though to say something else. You wait, but his silence tells you he changed his mind.
“What is it? You owe me,” you tell him, and his puff of surprised laughter scabs over some of the wounds your conversation inflicted.
“I’m going to say this, even though I shouldn’t meddle,” Gold Steve says, “--but Brigandine, if any part of him is part of me? Then he wants you.”
He steps back and shuts the door, and you’re left in the hallway, shaken to your very core. Deep in your heart, in the places you’d built high, careful walls to prevent heartache, there are vines growing.
You fall back against the wall, heart racing. You’d hoped his story had been about you, but hadn’t dared let yourself think it. After all, you hadn’t met Steve until a year after he’d found out his childhood best friend was the Winter Soldier, and that doesn’t match Gold Steve’s narrative. After a year of loving Steve Rogers, you’d learned the hard way that making assumptions only leads to disappointment. There’s no mistaking what he’d just said, though, and the language he’d used -!
If any part of him is part of me? Then he wants you.
Wants.
There’s no way in hell you can sleep. 
You want to talk to Steve now.  
You want to hide in your room until you figure out what the hell to say to him. 
You want to ask him to teach you how to spar and then beat on him for a while until he admits maybe he thinks you’re cute.
You want to ask Natasha to teach you how to spar and ask her a million, million questions.
Most of all, you just miss Steve. You’d been hiding from the disparity between the two men’s reactions to you for long enough that your heart aches a little. That thought makes you imagine what it must be like for Gold Steve. Sure, he’s got a plan, but there are many steps left on it-- and the person he loves isn’t just a few rooms away. She’s dead, and by all accounts, has no idea how he feels.
You kind of want to knock on his door and tell him the inverse of what he’d said to you, because there’s no way in hell it’s not true. Any version of you is by her very nature completely gone over Steve Rogers. The next best thing you can do for Gold Steve is to make sure that your story doesn’t end the same way.
You hug your arms around yourself and do a dizzy little spin of happiness, anxiety, and hope.
When you come to a stop, an impulsive, sleepy, recalcitrant part of you offers an idea, one you reach for with greedy hands. Three times a week, Steve gets up very early to run, and it’s one of those mornings. You’d only have to wait ninety minutes, which is probably the same amount of time it would take you to fall asleep in bed with your mind racing like this!
You find Steve’s door and settle into a position across from it on the floor, your phone in hand. It’s got enough battery to last a while, and best of all, this gives you time to prepare for what you’ll say.

You wake up in your own bed.
You sit up in utter surprise, scrambling the blanket out of the way to find that yes, you are wearing the clothes you were wearing the night before. You don’t see your shoes anywhere, but they’re not on your feet or in the bed.
“FRIDAY?” you call out, standing waif-like and confused in the middle of your room. “How in the heck am I in my room?”
“Captain Rogers carried you to your room from the hallway just after five in the morning--”
“WHAT?” you shout over her form of address. “Show me?”
You throw yourself into your desk chair and open the laptop, grateful that FRIDAY is integrated enough to take care of the mundane nonsense-- the surveillance camera feed opens right away.
“I can display the footage in whatever order you wish,” FRIDAY prompts.
“How about backwards from when I got in here?”
The display in the window flickers for a second, then starts playing footage backwards. When you see Steve ohmygodhisarmsarebare Rogers back up through the doorway carrying you bridal-style, you slam your hand down on the spacebar to pause the video. It’s hard to breathe as you stare at the frozen image. Steve is wearing a white tank top, facing away from the camera in the process of shouldering his way through the door, careful to keep you from striking the door frame by turning sideways.
You’re certain it’s the Steve from your universe, but ask the question in a stunned whisper anyway. FRIDAY’s response is definitive: this is ‘your’ Steve.
Carefully, you hit the spacebar to unpause.
The blessed hallway camera gives you a front-on view of Steve’s backwards walk, including a moment where he stops and looks down at you. It looks like he’s checking to see if you’re waking up-- but the look on his face is absolutely everything. Your goosebumps have goosebumps as you watch the moment lengthen; Steve tips his head to the side and regards you fondly before starting to move again.
It’s confirmation of what Gold Steve said, in glorious pixelated technicolor.
Excited to rush over and talk to him in person, you get up and start looking for the clothes you’ll change into after your shower. As soon as you open your underpants drawer, though, you’re racing back over and hitting spacebar to play the video again, desperate to see more.
The Steve in the video backs up, then turns, looking down at you for a long second before leaning over to settle you onto the floor. You’re stunned, enraptured, overwhelmed.
Nothing about the video you’re watching contains the kind of jerky movements you’d expect from watching it in reverse. Steve is gentle, careful, and smooth. He’s clearly doing his very best not to wake you up. You’re actually conflicted, because waking up to see him looking down at you so tenderly would have shot up to the top slot in a list of happiest moments of your life, no question.
“Oh my god, I am literally going to combust,” you whisper under your breath. The video is still going, showing you curled up onto your side with your phone propped up onto your hand. This reminds you to look for your phone. You finally find a charge cable sticking out from the drawer of your nightstand-- Steve had clearly  looked for your your charge cable, despaired of finding a place on the messy surface to set down your phone without risking it falling, and stuck it in the drawer.
Is there a chance that Steve Rogers doesn’t know that nightstand drawers are for things guests should never see?  You're lucky yours were tucked farther back and out of sight.
It’s mere chance that has you looking back over at your laptop to see that the video has reached the moment when you'd spun in complete glee in the hallway. You walk over and sit down, smiling indulgently and wrapping your arms around yourself in a mirror of video-you’s movements.
You watch as you back up into Gold Steve’s doorway, and then you realize how different those last moments are when you can see his face.
Gold Steve’s expression is etched with longing as he tells you those world-changing words. That light pressure against your hair was a kiss, and his hands shake a little, as he responds to your hug. There’s grief in every movement he makes.
You’re dumbstruck and worried, rewinding and watching those moments twice, your heart breaking for him more each time. This doesn’t feel like concern about the plan not working. This feels like mourning.
You were already going to go straight to talk to Steve as soon as you got dressed, but now? Now you throw on the clothes you picked out and head out the door. Something is wrong, and the two of you are going to find out what it is.

Today's (10/7/2024) Episode: Happy Birthday fun
On Winterfest morning Noemi woke up early to make her birthday boy his special cake. Except for a rash, she felt completely over bloaty head.
“It’s a good thing too” she thought to herself as she headed into the kitchen to start cooking “We’re going to be running all over the place, trying to do that the way I was feeling would have been a nightmare.”

With a big day of travel ahead of them the couple had agreed aging Skye up first thing made the most sense. It would be much easier to transport him around from place to place with them as a child, and they both figured he’d have the most fun and remember more as a “big kid” anyway.
“Are you ready to blow out the candles?” Luigi asked, prompting a tiny but very excited chant of: “Cake! Cake! Cake!”
“I guess that’s a yes” he said to Noemi with a grin, helping his baby do the honors while Noemi put her all into belting out the birthday song.
Skye spun his way into childhood then immediately inquired: “So, I can have cake for breakfast today, right?”

Luigi whipped himself up a quick plate of eggs and bacon while Noemi and Skye each took big slices of cake; quickly cleaning their plates.
“Are you ready to go reintroduce yourself to everyone?” Noemi asked her son with a smile “I doubt they’ll even recognize you!”
She quickly regretted her joke when little Skye suddenly withdrew and looked at her with eyes full of tears. “Oh honey, I’m sorry“ she reassured him. “I was just being silly. Everyone is going to be excited to meet the new, grown-up you!”
She gave him a quick hug and suggested: “Why don’t you call up Elyse and Bruce and wish them a Happy Winterfest while I go give Daddy his present?” His smile slowly returned when his friends made it clear that they were excited to see him later that evening at the Town Potluck.

While Skye talked with his friends Noemi joined Luigi in the bedroom, both spinning out of their pajamas and getting ready for the day.
“Skye’s been a child all of 5 minutes and I already screwed up” she said as she followed him into the study to see her present.
“I’m sure he’ll be fine” Luigi replied “His friends should cheer him right up. Now let me cheer you up – feast your eyes on this Winterfest marvel!”

Noemi walked over to get a better look at her new desktop computer, still in shock “Oh honey, its perfect… but can we afford it?”
“I spent carefully” he replied “Rock solid hardware, optimized by hand. This investment will help our post-holiday scramble to finish Watcher Tales.”
She frowned at the reminder of the work to come but pulled out her own gift to him instead of dwelling on it.  “Its not nearly as fancy as yours” she said shyly “but I saw this on Plopsy and knew you’d love it.” His face, and the way he quickly placed the cross stitch hoop on his beside table, confirmed her guess.

Finally, it was time to present their boy with the gift Luigi had found online the night before. “I really hope he likes it” he whispered to Noemi.
Skye face lit up as he picked the camera out of the box. “Oh my grim! I can start my own simstagram account!”
“Well, I’ll need to help you with it, and if you want to take pictures with other sims in them, you’ll always need to get their permission.” Luigi hoped he hadn’t just participated in the origin story of a future paparazzi, but he couldn’t ask for a more positive response to his gift.
Noemi was worried after how sensitive Skye had been to her joke earlier that morning and wanted to head off unrealistic expectations. “Just keep in mind that it’s normal for other sims to not be as excited about your photos as you are.” Their boy nodded and ran off to take his first picture.

After Skye posted his first photos online as “BlueSkyBlossoms” the trio headed to the mailbox to send presents to the family they wouldn’t be seeing.
“Hon, look!” Luigi held up the book they’d received from Bonnie “Haven’t you been saying you wanted to read this one?”
“Yes, I can’t believe she remembered!” Noemi quickly texted their friend a thank you before grabbing Roach and heading to the teleporter that would take them to their next Winterfest destination in Chestnut Ridge.

I sat on a rug biding my time Drinking her wine We talked until two and then she said "It's time for bed"
“It’s not much, but this is home. Make yourself comfortable, I’ll go get the wine.” You say, turning to Mick, whose eyes were busy taking in every inch of your tiny apartment.
He snaps out of his trance and nods as you disappear into the kitchenette to retrieve the bottle of wine you kept around for emergencies, and two glasses.
You turn around for a second, and take a moment to observe as your slightly tipsy companion struggled to remove his shoes. You can’t help but smile at his mannerisms, there was just something so endearing about him, which was what had initially drawn you to him earlier that evening.
Typically, you would never bring home strange men you had just met that night in a bar. You’ve watched enough true crime documentaries to know that a lot of them start this way, but with Mick, you just couldn’t help yourself. He didn’t seem like the type to seduce innocent women into bed only to chop them up into tiny pieces and feed them to his dogs. He was too sweet for that, too innocent. Gazing into those bright blue eyes of his you could tell that he had a good, kind soul. You wanted to stare into his eyes forever, and that’s why, as the bar closed for the evening, you found yourself asking if he wanted to go home with you.
You hadn’t meant it in a suggestive way. If bringing home strange men wasn’t your style, then sleeping with them immediately after meeting them was even more unlike you. Honestly, you just wanted to spend time with him. He was just great to talk to. He listened attentively, spoke so sweetly and succinctly, and he really understood your wacky sense of humour. You wouldn’t mind, of course, if the evening progressed towards something a little less friendly and a little more heated, but you were happy just to get to know him more, away from the loud music and passionate punters of the bar the two of you had met at.
Wine and your only two clean matching glasses in hand, you leave the kitchen and return to the lounge, where you see Mick sat on the floor, his back resting against the sofa, and a throw cushion in his arms squeezed tightly against his chest.
“You’re a floor person too, huh?” You say as you drop to your knees beside him, sliding in next to him and placing the wine and glasses beside you on the rug.
“Yeah. It just looked… comfy.” He says with a smile.
“Can’t argue with that. My landlord just had new carpets fitted and it’s like walking on a chinchilla.” You say with a chuckle.
“That’s a strange mental image, the poor chinchillas!” Mick says, and you both erupt into a fit of giggles.
“Have you ever stroked a chinchilla? It’s like petting a tiny cloud! Did you know that their fur is so dense that they can’t actually get wet because their fuzz retains the moisture for so long it can cause a skin infection for the poor babies.” You say, and Mick raises an eyebrow at you.
“So how do they get clean?” He asks.
“They take dust baths!” You say, and Mick nods.
“You sure do know a lot of things.” He says, and you chuckle slightly.
“Oh, it’s all pointless trivia, I assure you. Not all that useful in real life but I’m great at quizzes.”
“Got any more pointless facts for me?”
“Ooh, umm… Roman soldiers were actually paid in salt because back then it was super valuable. That’s where we get the word salary from, because salt in Latin is sal.” You say, and Mick smiles.
“Being with you is like having a glass of wine with Wikipedia.” Mick says, and you chuckle.
“I hope that’s a good thing and I haven’t like, totally freaked you out with my nerdiness already.” You say, and Mick shakes his head.
“Nah, I like it. I like you.” He says, and you can’t help but smile at his compliment.
“Wine?” You ask, gesturing to him with the bottle.
“Yes please.”
“I’m afraid it’s only the cheap, screw-top stuff. I’m sure you’re used to better.” You say, opening the bottle and filling his glass to the appropriate level, before filling your own.
“It all tastes the same anyway. I’m convinced wine experts just gaslight themselves into thinking otherwise.” He says, and you laugh.
“Conspiracy theory alert!” You chuckle, before taking a long swig of your beverage.
Mick takes a sip and pulls a face as he swallows.
“I’m starting to think maybe I just don’t like red wine.” He says, and you collapse into a fit of tipsy giggles.
“Does anyone? To be honest, I only buy red because I don’t have space in the fridge for anything else.” You say, and it’s Mick’s turn to laugh.
“I know some red wine guys. I’m definitely not one of them.” He says with a smile, and you shake your head.
“This really is a shitty red. I’m getting notes of pickle brine, paint thinner and… plastic?” You say, holding the glass up to your nose and taking a deep inhale.
Mick begins to giggle tipsily as you swirl the dark liquid around in your glass the way you had seen sommeliers do it on TV.
“The paint thinner is definitely the most prominent note.” He says, and you smile, setting your disgusting beverage down on the floor beside you.
“Hey, I just want to say, thanks for coming back with me. I know my cramped, dusty old flat isn’t exactly the sort of place you spend your time, but I was really enjoying talking to you and I guess I just didn’t want our time together to end before it had to, you know?” You say, and Mick smiles sweetly at you.
“No, thank you for inviting me. Your flat is lovely, it looks exactly like you.” Mick says, and you quirk your eyebrow at him.
“What on earth do you mean?” You ask, and he bites his lip in thought.
“It just looks like you! It’s cozy, and warm, and cute. And it’s full of books,” Mick gestures to the piles of open textbooks on the counter, “You know a lot of things, I think you’re full of books too.”
“I have read one or two books in my time,” You say with a smile, “I suppose my flat does look a lot like my brain. Slightly messy and unorganised and full of useless stuff.”
“Not useless, interesting.” Mick says, gesturing to your with his glass, and you roll your eyes.
“That’s not what people normally think.” You say, a slight sad look appearing on your face.
“Well, forget those people. You’re very interesting. I could talk to you forever.” Mick says, nudging your shoulder with his own.
“I could talk to you forever, too, but sadly, I’m gonna have to call it a night.” You say, offering him a small smile.
“Really?” He says, turning to you with a sad look in his bright blue eyes.
“I have work tomorrow, and it’s 2am, definitely past my bed time.” You say, standing up from your comfortable position on the floor.
“I suppose I’d better go.” Mick says.
He stands up and brushes his hand gently against yours, sending shivers through your body.
“Or…” You say, brushing your hand against his.
“Or what?”
“You could stay?” You suggest, and Mick’s eyes light up.
“I’d like that.” He says with a smile, and he takes your hand in his, properly this time.
“I don’t have a spare room or anything, so I guess we’d have to sleep together,” You say, your eyes going wide as you realise the implication of what you had just said, “I don’t mean it like that, I mean, we’d have to share a bed. Not that I wouldn’t want to sleep with you, of course, I would, in the future, only if you want to, though, but I’m so tired and… fuck I’m rambling. Sorry.”
You offer Mick a shy smile and he squeezes your hand.
“You don’t have to be sorry, you’re cute when you ramble. Let’s go to bed, okay? I’ll be the big spoon.” Mick says, and you nod, unable to speak. Instead, you just stare at him with awe in your eyes and a soft, sleepy smile on your lips.
Mick guides you to your bedroom and takes a seat on the edge of your bed.
“Do you want me to go outside while you change?” He asks, and you shake your head.
“It’s okay.” You say softly, and you unzip your dress, allowing it to fall to the floor.
Mick’s eyes travel up and down your body as you reach for your pyjamas and pull your oversized shirt over your head.
You turn around to see him looking and smile at him, before crawling under the sheets and wrapping them around your shoulders.
“You getting in?” You ask, and Mick stands to remove his shirt and jeans, before sliding into the sheets beside you and wrapping his arm around your torso.
“Goodnight, (y/n).” Mick says, and you take his hand in yours, wrapping it further around your body and giving it a small squeeze.
“Sweet dreams.” You respond, before peacefully drifting off to sleep.

What is this thing called free time??? I managed to write another chapter for this series! I can't believe it's almost done!! And before the show comes out this month!! We get a little time jumpy in this chapter, mainly because I am following the timeline of the games. We also go from super cute parent/ellie vibes to sad vibes. mainly because I don't want to write the sad ending, but the little thing in my brain says I should... so I'm going to write sad ending and happy ending because this is my fic and yall are going to have to choose what ending you want to read, of course you can always read both. Thank you to everyone who's given this series a read, I love seeing you make your way through each chapter! And still taggin @sarahbellesaurus because you liked part 4 so here's part 5!
Series Summary:
This world isn’t kind to anyone; and heaven forbid anyone wants a slice of happiness. You wanted the stereotypical, as most people would tell you, dream of falling in love, getting married and having kids. After coming to Jackson, you kept that dream to yourself. Until your stupid best friend’s stupidly handsome older brother waltzes in, and you tell him. Joel thinks it's nice that you can hold onto a dream like that... and he let's his guard down just long enough to think maybe...he might want that too.

And then once the infection hit, it felt like the mocked you as you scavenged through houses, trying to survive. But maybe now, the could be some of the few words to describe your life. A Year Later
“Momma!” Ellie shouts as she lets herself into the house.
“Upstairs!” You shout back. You can hear her take the steps two at a time, slowing as she reaches the doorway to your office.
“What’s shakin’ sugarpie?” You look up from the quilt you’re making, giving her a little smile.
“Where’s Billy?” She nods to the empty playpen next to your desk.
“He’s with Joel and Tommy.” You chuckle, kicking a pile of fabric off a stool so she can sit down.
“Bit young for a boys day out.” She softly chuckles.
“Never too early to get them out of my hair. But what did you want to ask me?” Your sewing machine softly whirs as you continue your project.
“I was talkin with Cat… about getting a tattoo.” She shrugs. Lots of people in town had them, and Cat was a pretty amazing tattoo artist. She learned from her uncle, who was an artist before the infection.
“Over the acid burn?” You nod. It was something you both had talked about. Ellie found it absolutely hilarious that you had a tiny knife tattoo on your middle finger, and ever since she saw it she wanted a tattoo.
“Ya… I was hoping you’d help me design one.” Your machine stops and Ellie looks up to see your look of surprise.
“Really?” You ask, the corners of your mouth gently tugging into a smile.
“Ya. You’re an amazing artist, with some of the best designs. And I want it to be a reminder.” She swallows hard, eyes focusing on the floor.
“Reminder of…” you prod.
“Of my family.” She shrugs again.
“I love that.” You smile, quickly packing up everything on your desk so you have space to work. You tell Ellie to throw a record on, while you pull out all your art books. You both flip through pictures, tabbing things that catch your eye.
“You still have your wedding dress?” Ellie asks as she flips through an old catalog. 
“Ya, in the closet. Why?”
“It had a fern design didn’t it?” She looks over to you, a smile slowly appearing. You quickly dig it out, putting it on the table. Both of you draw a few variations and compare.
“Think this one.” She points to one of hers. The fern is fully inked in, many tiny leaves on each stem.
“Ok, one piece down.” You sloppily recreate it on your own sketchbook, doodling around it.
“So you have a piece of me… maybe a piece of the mom you never got to meet?” You ask gently. Ellie nods slowly, trying to rack her brain for something.
“What about something like this?” You turn your book to her. You’ve drawn a different type of fern, but this one is just a simple outline. “Mine’s filled in, because we’ve gotten to live a life together, we’ve filled in a lot of gaps. Hers is an outline, a life lived before and for you, but not with you.”
Ellie gently reaches for your book, fingers gently tracing the outline. She hardly thought about her birth mom lately, only turning to her journal in empty nights alone.
“Do you ever think about her?” Ellie asks.
“I do.” Ellie’s eyes flick to your face. “I only know what you’ve shared. But somewhere deep in my bones I can feel her; mainly guiding me through your temper. I hope wherever she is, she’s content with how Joel and I have tried to take care of you.”
Ellie soaks in your words. She thought about what her mom might say to Joel, how she would thank him for keeping her safe. Or maybe how she’d lay into him for stopping the fireflies. But she hadn’t thought what would happen if she met you. A stranger that was the only one who ever felt like home.
“She’d be thankful, for everything. Much like I am.” Ellie pats your hand.
“Thanks Sugarpie.” You lay your hand on top, taking a deep breath in. “Feel like you need one more piece.”
“I already know what it is.” She sighs.

“How’s your ink?” Joel chuckles. The dirt crutches beneath his feet as he guides you along the patrol route.
“Healin’ nicely.” You pull him down to you, kissing him on the cheek. He gently takes your arm, turning it to reveal your tattoos.
“Can’t believe my own son stole my nickname.” He playfully grumbles as his fingers gently caress the little bumble bee that sits on top of a lavender flower.
“Who else could ever be worthy?” You giggle.
“I guess that’s true.” He gives you a kiss, letting his lips linger for just a second more. It’s the moments like these that he remembers best. The way you smile at him, how you dance in the sunlight, the way the breeze carries you laugh.
“Have you seen Ellie’s?” You quietly ask, threading your fingers through his.
“Much bigger than both of yours.” He nods. It wasn’t much of a shock that she got one, she always liked the one on your finger. He was a little surprised it wasn’t anything Savage Starlight related though.
“We designed it together.” You tell him, “You like the moth?”
“Reminds me of the one on my guitar.” He flashes a smile, pulling your hand up to his lips and kissing the tips of your fingers.
“‘Cause it is.” You whisper. His eyes narrow at you, not sure what you’re playing at. “All I’m sayin’ is don’t stop trying. She’s comin around. There’s too much between you to let that all go forever.” You press your lips to his, smiling when he pulls you close.
"And you didn't want a matchin' one?" He chuckles.
"And miss the opportunity to permanently adorn my skin with a Joel Miller original weapon design?" You laugh, flashing the little pipe with scissors taped to the top.
"Only you Darlin'." He shakes his head, grabbing you and smothering you in a kiss.

A Year Later
“(Y/N), your terror is pullin’ on the lights again!” Tommy shouts from the top of his ladder.
“Mmm, can’t help it if Billy loves his uncle!” You shout from behind the bar. You look around at the team putting together the dance hall. It looks so magical with all the lights strung everywhere, the warm glow of the fire.
“Come here munchkin.” Ellie sighs, picking him up as he giggles in excitement. He wraps his little arms around her, trying to grab her hair that’s been scraped into a ponytail. She moves it out of the way, giving him a silent no.
"Pie!" He giggles as her fingers tickle his sides.
"Got you booger." She chuckles as he giggles louder.
“We gunna see you at the dance tonight?” You ask, leaning around her to smile at Billy. He gives you a toothy grin, tucking his head into his sister's neck.
“Uh… maybe” Ellie shrugs. Things have been a little less tense with Joel, she’s managed to keep herself in line for the sake of you and Billy;  but she still tries to keep her distance. “Who’s babysittin?”
“Molly next door. She said she wants practice.” You chuckle as Billy reaches for you. You take him from her, bouncing him as you hand Tommy the rest of the lights.
“I heard Dina is newly single.” You say low enough for only her to hear. She hums in acknowledgment, which makes you smile. They were always friends but Ellie started lookin at her a bit differently after Dina started hopping from boyfriend to boyfriend, and yet always ended up stumbling to Ellie’s every time she broke up with them.
“Remember what I told you the night Joel proposed?”
“That you love us?” She smartly remarks. You shake your head and lean over to her.
“That you have to dance with the people you love at least once.” You wink.

“I don’t need your help Joel!” Ellie yells. You quickly make your way around the bar, closing the space between you and him but he quickly turns and brushes past you.
“Joel!” You call after him, your body following but your eyes glued on Ellie. You give her an apologetic look, running after your husband. As you stumble outside you see Joel making his way toward home, but Maria is standin' across the street with-
“Seth!” You yell, calmly walking over to him.
“You gunna claim her as yours you need to get her-” He spits as you slam your shin right into his crotch before he can finish.
“(Y/N)!” Maria warns. You ignore her, throwing a jab to his eye and the heel of your hand up his nose. The force is enough to knock him flat on his ass, the snow around dotted with red.
“Stay away from my daughter you jackass!” You scream, kicking him for good measure and running off to find your husband.
“Joel!” You shout after him, jogging as fast as you can to catch him.
“She’s made it clear she doesn’t want anything to do with me.” He yells over his shoulder.
“That’s not true…”
“Then what the hell was that in there?” He whips around so fast you startle, tripping over your own feet and landing flat on your ass.
“Ow.” You wince.
“Sorry Darlin.” Joel sighs, helping you to your feet. He helps brush the snow off you, grunting as you wrap yourself around him. You put your chin on his chest and wait until he looks down at you.
“She’s trying to figure out where she fits in Honeybunch. And it constantly feels like it’s not here.” Joel pulls your hood up, tightening the cords as he mulls over your words. “She came to the dance…”
“Not for us.”
“No teenager goes to a community function for family. Does that matter anyways? Not everyone can be as… lucky as us. She’s gotta find her way, in her own time.” You pucker your lips at him, which makes him roll his eyes as he gives you a kiss.
“How do you do that?” He mumbles against your mouth.
“What?” You smile against his.
“Get my head out of my ass.” He presses another kiss to your lips, his tongue gently sliding along the seam of yours, both of you humming happily as your tongues tangle.
 “I was coming to see if y’all were ok, and clearly you are.” Tommy chuckles. You begrudgingly unseal your mouth from Joel, shooting Tommy a glare.
“Momma!” Billy lurches in Tommy’s arms for you.
“Come here honey bee.” You take Billy, laughing as he burrows his face in your neck.
“I’ll meet you back at the house.” You tell Joel, tilting your head for his kiss goodbye.
“Want me to take Billy?” He gives you a quick peck, gently rustling Billy's hair.
“Nah, we’re gunna go see Sugarpie.” You tell Billy, who gives a small yea in response. Joel gives you a curt nod, walking back inside with Tommy. You watch for a minute and then quickly make the trek home.
You knock on Ellie’s door, happy when she lets you in.
“I have an early patrol.” She states.
“And I have half a mind to smack you.” You cheerfully tell her as you set Billy on her bed.
“I don’t need his help.” She huffs, sitting at her desk.
“I know, and it doesn’t matter.” You sit on the crate across from her. “Ellie, he’s your dad for all intents and purposes. He’s always going to want to help you, protect you, be there for you. None of that stops simply because you want it to.” You watch as she picks at a loose thread on her pants.
“Sugar, we don’t know when our last days are. Don’t let the last words you say to people you love be ones you regret.” You gently put your hand on her arm. Her green eyes turn to you, knowing that, like usual, you’re right.

The Next Morning
“Hey, I gotta stop at the house.” Ellie tells Dina as they make their way to the stables.
“Ya, sure.” Dina shrugs following after her. Ellie slowly makes her way up the porch, letting herself in.
“Pie!” Billy yells in delight from the living room.
“Hey B.” She gives him a kiss as you come around the corner.
“His shift already started.”
“You responsible for the black eye?” Ellie questions. Maria made Seth apologize to her this morning, not that it did anything to make her feel better. It did warm Ellie's heart to see Seth's big black eye. Maria wouldn’t say who did it, which meant it wasn't Tommy or Joel. And of course Seth would have told everyone if it was Joel, and he would never admit if you were the one to beat him up.
“That all he walked away with?” You frown, trying your best to keep your smile at bay. Ellie rolls her eyes, wrapping you in a hug.
“Think your route crosses path with his, maybe say hello…” You give her one last squeeze before letting her go.
“You mean sorry.”
“Smarter then you look sugarpie.” You pat her shoulder and spin her toward the door. “Make sure to stay warm, keep your eyes peeled.”
“Do you think he would... want to watch a movie tonight?” Ellie quietly asks, opening the door and giving you one last hug.
“I think he’d love that.” You smile, waving to Dina, who flashes a smile. Ellie quickly walks down the stairs, turning to give you one last wave.
“Watch her Dina!” You yell. You assume Ellie rolled her eyes by the way Dina laughs.

“(Y/N)!”
You turn to see Jeremy running toward you, a look of worry on his face.
“Jer, what’s wrong?” You catch him as he slows to a stop.
“Jesse radioed in, Joel and Tommy never checked in. And there were strangers spotted not too far out of town.”
“Ellie?”
“Jesse went to find her and Dina. They’re going to cover the route, figured you’d want to be on the scout team too.”
You can feel the panic rise in your chest; you take Jeremy by the hand and run into the barn.
“Woah there-” Maria chuckles.
“Can you watch Billy?” You ask, trying your best to saddle your horse.
“(Y/N)... what’s wrong?”
“Can you watch Billy?” You ask louder.
“Ya sure.” She nods, backing up as you mount your horse and take off on the trail. You ride hard to the ridge that surrounds the mountain lodge; it was a place that Joel and Tommy frequented when they wanted to play their instruments in peace. You’re not sure why they would end up there in this bad weather, but something was telling you to start there. As you reach the ridge you leave your horse in a nearby stable.
Jeremy managed to keep up, quietly following you as you scuttle toward the edge. You belly crawl the rest of the way, using the scope of your gun to see down below.
“Anything?” Jeremy whispers.
“Two of our horses, lots of people outside. Burned infected at the gate” You whisper back.
“Clear up here.” He confirms. You can feel him sit by your feet, his back to you so he can keep watch.
You try to calm your breathing, watching as the people outside patrol the lodge. Your scope moves to the large windows at the front, and you can see him. You watch as a girl not much older than Ellie shoots Joel in the leg. You jerk, feeling Jeremy keep you in place.
“What’s happening?” He harshly whispers.
“Joel’s been shot.” You push past your teeth. You watch, seeing the flash of something silver come in contact with Joel’s face. That’s when you see her. Her little brown pony tail poking out of her hood. Ellie, get out of there.
“Be ready.” you whisper, taking a deep breath in and cocking your gun. You hear Jeremy do the same. The girl winds up once more and you pull the trigger. The shot rings out, scaring the horses below and sending the guards scrambling. You manage to shoot several of them, the pure white snow now a river of red.
You turn back to the lodge window, seeing two people dragging the girl, one dragging Ellie and two more dragging Joel. You let two more shots fly; one hits one of the people dragging Joel and the other gets the person dragging Ellie right in the neck.
“Jeremy?” you whisper, panic rising in your throat.
“Clear.” He whispers back.
You let a few more shots fly until the group drops Joel and Ellie, fleeing into their vehicles. You scramble back from the hillside and dig out your radio.
“Heather, do you copy?”
“Copy.”
“Lodge trail. Light it up NOW.” You yell. Jeremy peels you away, leading you back to the horses. You can hear gunshots in the distance, hoping that it did some damage. You quickly ride down to the lodge, staying close to Jeremy as you both make it inside. He does a quick sweep, coming for you when it’s clear.
You hear her before you see them, her sobs bouncing off the walls and deep into your skull.
“Ellie.” You engulf her in your arms, blood smearing across your jacket as you try to calm her.
“Back-up is on the way.” Jeremy whispers, keeping his eyes on the windows.
“Move her into the next room, away from the windows.” You command, pushing Ellie into Jeremy’s arms. Her scream is like a baby being ripped away from their parents, you can feel it vibrate your bones. Calm, stay calm. You take a deep breath and turn to Joel. He’s bloody, his shallowing breathing matching the pace of your heart.
“(Y/N)?”
You turn to see Tommy slumped against the wall.
“We got people on the way.” you nod.

“Ellie?”
You startle at the unexpected voice, moving to your hiding spot along the wall.
“Shit.” You hear two sets of feet scramble, immediately going to Joel.
“Dina? Jesse?” You stand up, your brain not quite believing your eyes.
“(Y/N), what the fuck happened?” Jesse asks, arms reaching for you.
“Ellie’s in the next room, grab her and get back to Jackson. She’s a little roughed up but she’ll make it.” You rub his arms, like a mom warming up her kid from the cold.
“Joel…” Dina asks.
“Can’t do anything until the cavalry is here." You glance at him, "Please, take Ellie and ride as fast as you can.” You swallow both of them in a hug. You take a deep shaky breath, gasping to keep the sob inside.
“I’ll stay.” Jesse whispers. “Dina can take Ellie.” 
“No! No.” You take both of them and lead them to the next room. “You have to watch each other, we don’t know if anyone is hanging around.” You gently shake Ellie, helping her stand and handing her off to Dina.
“We’ll make sure to put the whole town on alert.” Dina nods, helping Ellie out of the lodge. Jesse gives you one last hug, handing you his snacks and jogging after his friends.
_______
The mumbling. You’ve always hated when people talked in hushed tones, as if you didn’t know what they were talking about, or who. It didn’t help that the storm outside had settled, leaving the trees to groan in the silence, the snow to snapping the weakest limbs.
“(Y/N).” Jeremy’s voice is gentle, his hand resting on your shoulder. Your voice is lost in your throat; so you simply turn your head toward him.
“We have to move him.”
Your eyes turn back to Joel, his lungs wheezing with every breath. Silent tears blur your vision, a fat drop falling on Joel’s sleeve as you nod. 
Jeremy helps you to stand, making a note that you’ll need a set of new clothes before you go back to town. You’d scare the shit out of everyone with how much blood you have down the front of you. A few people come in with a stretcher, staring at the state Joel is in.
“Be careful.” Jeremy tells them, snapping everyone out of their daze. The four of you move Joel, trying your best to be quick and gentle.
“Blankets.” You mumble, gathering the few that were found in the cupboards and wrapping Joel. The two gently lift the stretcher and take him outside where the covered wagon is waiting.
“Ready?” Jeremy asks.
“Be right up.” You swallow hard. You listen as his footsteps fade down the hall, the door quietly closing. You look up to see the golf clubs still sitting in their bag. You walk over, taking out the one with the biggest head. You twirl it around, feel the weight of it in your hands, and start swinging.
