Regrading Taskmaster: S06E04 BMXing!

Been a bit! I really don't like Series Six, so it is actually tough sledding writing it up. Still, the faster we get through Six, the sooner we get to Seven.

We get to meet Alex's assistant "Little Ian" who is quickly sacked. He just has enough time to trick Greg and get Alex a silver car.

Prize Task: The Most Thought Provoking Thing

I've worked it out . . . Bill is dead.

Greg seems to be looking for items that provoke a wide variety of thoughts. I'm more of the opinion that anything that inspires a strong sense of curiosity fits the bill here. Asim's Iranian prince portrait does look a lot like him, but Greg is not wrong in saying that having a doppelganger doesn't really wrinkle the brain.

Tim's Bill Cotton and Kathie Kay record really seems to get Greg's conspiracy brain going. I'm less intrigued by it; it's just kind of a bad album cover. It's interesting that Greg didn't seem to know who Tesla was before Liza brought in her prize. Tesla is thought provoking, but she didn't really have a prize to bring in other than "files." I am curious what those files consist of, which technically fits the category.

Alice brings Don't Pee on my Leg and Tell Me It's Raining by Judy Sheindlin. I can't really speak to how thought-provoking the book is, but Alice does not sell it well. Russell has a photo of a Buddhist monk playing with a fidget spinner app on an iPad. I'm not so thrown by the mystique of monks that I can't imagine them using apps.

Overall, a pretty weak showing in my opinion. Alice goes in last because of her pitch. Tesla goes in first because he's an interesting figure. The rest are mostly interchangeable, but personal preference dictates Russell > Tim > Asim.

VT 01: Do something manly with this cardboard box.

Go down to the local abattoir, take your own hammer, and start taking names.

Interesting task because "manly" is a construct that is mostly in the eye of the beholder. The easy ones I can mark down are those who failed to use the box. Tim's flexing has a simple elegance to it, but he is just standing in the box. Alice's play about the wage gap doesn't integrate the box at all and seems pretty half-hearted.

Asim makes a cardboard feeling robot that does go beyond the conventional understanding of "manly." It's not brilliant, but it's better than most of the showings. For example: Russell basically loses his mind (he also just stands in the box). I do think Liza has the best effort by casting the box as a man and creating a pretty depressing image of a servile marriage.

VT 02: Have the most fun. Exactly recreate your attempt at the first task.

Fun!

The point of this task really seems like it's the recreation attempt and "having the most fun" is pretty superfluous. The team of three definitely seems to have more fun than Team Funk and for that reason, they're a lot worse at recreating the attempt. That said, Russell and Alice don't do so perfect a job that they deserve more than the 3-2 split.

Team Funk: 3 (-4) Asim, Liza, & Tim: 2 (-6)

VT 03: Make the best art using the entire contents of this can of squirty cream.

Her majesty the cream.

I'm not entirely sure what Liza made and I'm a little shocked she gets five for it. Tim went for the pun, but it's not an impressive bit of art. Alice's, on the other hand, is really really good. Asim doesn't have the clearest idea to represent global warming, so he's going to slide in after Russell.

Alice: 5 (+1) Asim: 3 (+2) Liza: 1 (-4) Russell: 4 (+1) Tim: 2 (0)

VT 04: Remove the £5 note from under the pint without spilling any of the pint. If you spill any of the pint, you are disqualified.

Zero points for Alice and Liza who both spilt so much beer.

Alice seemed to have the strategy figured out by sliding the pint off using the task. It's just unfortunate that she spills. They're not allowed to touch the glass and it doesn't seem like anyone broke that rule.

Gotta respect Liza for just going "fuck it" and going for the whip. It does get her disqualified.

Live Task: When tapped on the shoulder, shake hands with the Taskmaster without revealing your identities. You may not speak during the task. Everyone must shake hands with the Taskmaster once for at least 2 seconds. If the Taskmaster guesses your identity, you are disqualified.

The breathing is awful.

This is a winner-take-all task. Asim and Tim accidentally give away that Greg guesses them correctly. It doesn't really matter because Alice is the only one who successfully dupes him. No controversy here.

Russell won the first time and he does so again.

You got any headcannons on Donnie’s opinions on fidget toys? Such as fidget cubes, fidget spinners, infinity cubes, rubix cubes? If you look up fidget toys there’s a ton out there

Donnie’s mind is always going 60mph

he can’t help it, it’s how he works

new projects, new inventions, his brothers to keep up with, a s/o....

he has a lot on his plate

so fidget toys are kind of his best friend on stressful days or when he’s just tryna sit still for 5 minutes

he used to use a rubik’s cube to calm himself down but they were too easy to complete so he got tired of them

he’s tried all the fidget and sensory toys you can think of

cubes, spinners, little balls of play-dough, those weird snake looking things that are all clipped together (that I clearly can’t think of a better description for)

but his favourite are the bike chain fidget toys

he actually likes to make them as well, which is another good distraction for him

they’re just more discreet as as fidget toys so Mikey and the others tend to pick them up and play with them less

not that Donnie can’t share but Mikey forgets to give back

he’ll sit there for a good half an hour just thinking and twiddling this bike chain toy between his fingers

sometimes he’ll have a cube in one hand and another toy in the other

he’s very dexterous with them

but the cube is definitely his anxiety toy rather than a thinking or relaxing one

there’s enough to do on it that he can just go to town and try and relieve some of that feeling

it can get a little difficult for his s/o because the toys make little clicking noises when they move but it’s nothing a pair of headphones can’t solve

Donnie will pace up and down, occasionally writing on his whiteboard, and just fiddling with one of his toys

April always gets him new ones because she knows how much he loves them

sometimes he’ll just resort to throwing the toy in the air and catching it for a while

but it’s whatever works for him y’know?

he’s not the biggest fan of spinners as because they don’t “do much” for him

but he did learn a couple of tricks to do with one which he taught the others

persona characters autism headcanons!

hi im autistic and i started my day with sun so now im !!!!!!!!! some of these headcanons are from elsewhere on tumbr, but i dont know where :((( so i am hoping someone out there knows that n that everybody knows that i love them <3

Joker

there was some artwork from someone on tublr..where they pointed out that he doesnt really talk outside the metaverse so--hes hyperverbal as joker and just near nonverbal as akiren

he stims ALL THE TIME. that phone thing, the pencil thing, the little tappy tap of his foot, pulling at his bangs when hes embarrassed/smug. someone get him a fidget spinner. he’ll prob learn to do tricks with it

he probably sucks at focusing in class, like i know its just the game design but hes always surprised out of his daily “star out the window at the nearby office building” when his teachers ask him questions

mona mentions when the pt is at Wilton for the first time (after they run into shido) that joker eats like shit, and that could have multiple causes at the start of the story of course, but when i first played i thought that joker was a picky eater and that the variety (and amount of food) at the buffet would be an Ordeal...

tho mona makes that comment bc joker looked pale after having a little ptsd moment from shidos voice, but i didnt know that the first time i played

maybe when joker makes a face at ryuji putting so much ginger in his gyudon? joker probably does not like pickled ginger lol

his favortive foods are all spicy, which is why the curry he makes for his friends is always ‘overly spicy’, and why kasumi makes him a curry bento and joker kept going “...?” .... “....?!”

overly reflective glasses have been a great plus for him bc now he never has to make real eye contact every again!

he has so many options to be straight up rude sometimes in game. he probably no clue on his own, which is why he defaults to Not Talking. people probably mention his constant scary face, which is just him being nonexpressive, squinting at all the fucking bright lights, and Tired

high pain tolerance, which is why he was the kid that was always climbing trees in elementary school to get basketballs unstuck from the branches

his sixth sense lets him see treasure and possible places to climb/crawl bc 1. Shiny? Steal it. Steal it Now. and 2. Could i fit in that? Time to Find Out

probalby a bit of a klepto too oops. he’ll return it tho!! but he has to do it dramatically or he’ll die

cant sit properly to save his life

smells and touch are Great, they can keep him grounded when his brain goes off to police or dead rivals or guilt or

if a friend hung out with him and gave him total reigns of the agenda, he would choose to nap on the floor while his friend does something off to the side quietly

hyperfocuses on handy tasks (i.e. lockpicks, coffee brewing, cleaning, his part time jobs) and some things like movies and books. everything else is a tossup

his (normal) navigation app is his most used app bc he still doesnt know where hes going, even though he only goes to the same few places in the city

hates being sweaty, literally cannot stand it. probably double exhausted during the summer

yes, he mostly wears gray semi formal clothes bc parents tell him to, no, he will not changes this

Schedule or Death

cats, fishing, he just likes to be quiet. you can literally spend a day at the beach just to think if you want, and that is what yu want

has a lot of scripts for things (of which he shares with nanako!) but if he runs out he just stops talking..

inaba is a godsend bc its so fucking quiet and warm

he Yearns to hold his friends hands, but he shies away from a lot of touch (excepting yosuke, teddie, and nanako)

Cooking and Cleaning makes the world better. he and joker vibe together with this

unlike akiren, he strong arms any executive dysfunction into Be Productive or Else. his punishment is feeling the pure anxiety of having to make up for ‘lost time’. (another symptom of his workaholic parents)

writes everything down, notes are very neat, has pages dedicated for bad doodles when hes not feeling his usual Super Classroom Focus

Cannot handle secondhand embarrassment (most often caused by yosuke) and will quietly slip away to random cats or origami folding

hungry, crunch crunch folks. probably needs chewelry bc he used to chew on his shirt collars when he was younger.

cleans up after everyone in the food court, constantly worries about them accidently hurting themselves. likely spends half of group conversations watching peoples hands

she is very angry when she has meltdowns that might involve slamming doors and shouting. her parents call these ‘tantrums’ and ‘unfitting for a polite daughter’ but really thats because her meltdowns tend to be caused by arguments w her family after a long day of school and TV world traipsing

her atmosphere brightens when chie appears. that is not only the lesbian energy within her, but also because chie is like her Favorite Person

probably likes certain food textures and will stand for nothing less, probably feels embarrassed about his preferences with friends

constantly jumps between ‘everybody hates me so i should act like them so they dont hate me’ to ‘i refuse to be anything but very comfortable as myself, and i dont care that im making you upset sir’

he and souji are the king and queen of subtle stims, but for unhappy reasons :(

does not make jokes. cannot joke around. understand? yes, do? no.

loose clothes are the only good clothes, but all tags and obtrusive seams will be obliterated by kanji tatsumi

not very empathetic so he probably comes off as an asshole to strangers (like when he throws away his classmates confession letters without reading them) but he tries so hard to sound comforting when his buds are struggling.

his understanding of others emotions/reactions come from his learning as a detective, which seems cold+clinical to others, especially compared to souji, whos completely unexpressive but very introverted people person

Hamuko/Minako/Kotone

big personality!! very people-oriented!! koromaru and her are buddies!! when shes having a real bad time, shes very quiet and expressions turn off

interrupts herself in the middle of conversations all the time. no one knows where shes coming from. her brains is thousands of km ahead of her body

bouncey legs, swingin arms, twirlly skirt, little somersaults! when will she stop? never!

very obvious music stims with her hands and arms! people are like “oh there she goes! happy as usual!” shes listening to minatos heavy metal playlist

switches from exhausted to excited within milliseconds. no one can predict, not even her

SEES has to ask her for context all the time cuz she’ll just continue shit from 2 weeks ago without warning

professionals will assume shes very childish bc of how chipper she is, but she is beyond mature for her age and only feels comfortable enough to have serious conversations if a person has proved themself able to handle it

collects every little thing. her room is a mess and she has to get rid of most of it every time she moves :(

hates cleaning! smells bad, feels bad hhhhhgggg

dont let mitsuru-senpai see her bedroom

gets lost in the middle of conversations with others bc shes thinking about a story connected to one(1) word that was said earlier

Minato/Makoto/Sakuya

no talkies, no walkies

his story in the movies is him literally learning how to function around people he cares for

doesnt get jokes, expressions, body language, empathy, subtlety, metaphors, physical contact, or eye contact. aigis is probably the only person he truly understands right away

he is still nice to people because he doesnt see a reason not to be, but also he has very limited energy so only his senpai and old people get his most polite-kindnesses

cannot describe feelings for the life of him. the team wont know hes injured or sick until hes passed out

everything is too loud, time to drown it out with my loud ass music

rocking and chewing stims, ryoji is the first person to point him out for these subtle stims (not accusingly of course, just general pure curiosity and love for the uniqueness of humanity)

likes to cover his face with whatever is available, lives like a bat in a dark dry cave

will wear anything that has pockets and his blue/gray/black palette

sleepy at all times bc he never has much energy

when he was younger he probably needed a lot of support, especially after his parents died, because he wouldnt communicate like a neurotypical and would shutdown for hours in the middle of school without warning. probably missed a lot of lessons and field trips out of pure overstimulation

eating at all times. no preference, just whatevers closest

his meltdowns probalby include humming whining noises and curling up in a ball, which makes people want to touch him, but that is the LAST thing he wants. put a blanket on him! play some music! do not talk and do not expect him to speak

aigis is the only person who can touch him normally bc her hands are cold and he likes cold

never nude, feels mmmmmmmmm without clothes and probalby wears a full robe in the hotsprings

will not do things that take more than one step w/o someone else walking him thru it, which Same

Ward’s Science–So Many STEM Resources

One of the most difficult skills to teach in school is problem solving. I can’t tell you how many kids–and parents–ask me, “How do I get an A.” My answer: “By thinking,” which oddly confuses them. We talk about what that means–problem solving, critical analysis, logical thinking–but often, that sounds hard to them–too hard. They want an easier way.

Why is that?

Basically, it’s because there aren’t enough education opportunities that require that sort of skill and those there are, usually rhyme with ‘math’ or ‘science’ which to many kids are “just too complicated”.

Enter STEM–Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.

“I don’t think schools can manage without coding and STEM. In Finland, we have had coding in the curriculum starting in the first grade; it is not taught separately, but through the thinking of various subjects.” –Anneli Rautiainen, Head of Innovation Unit at Finnish National Agency for Education

Coding, robotics, and experimentation–integral pieces of STEM–give students the best start possible to the rest of their lives. They are a toolkit of life skills such as problem-solving, coding and thinking. 93% of teachers (in America) believe these sorts of thinking skills in K-12 are critical.

Nothing promotes these better than STEM. Done right, STEM turns the confusing part of ‘thinking’ into fun. I found a partner in my STEM projects. It’s called Ward’s Science.

Ward’s Science is known to its customers and the industry as the complete solution for materials supporting classroom science subjects. They not only offer project supplies but lesson plans, curricula, how-to videos, tips and tricks, personalized help, and podcasts. What I really like about Ward’s Science

Ward’s Science makes it easy to find engaging, age-appropriate STEM resources, even if you aren’t quite sure what you want. The website is clean, simple to maneuver, and easy to understand. You type in what you’re looking for and get options. No ads. No animations. Just content.

Some services I didn’t expect and that would be difficult to find in other stores–virtual or physical–are:

Another feature I like is called Ward’s World. In this section of the website, Ward’s Science shares spectacular projects that will energize and excite students such as “Halloween fun with chemical reactions”, “The periodic table of candy–a chemistry lesson plan”, “Physics of the fidget spinner (for elementary and middle school”, “6 live specimens that make great classroom pets”, and “A fun way to teach pH”. Activities and lesson plans are organized by subject (chemistry, biology, geology, physics, and STEM), grade level, and resource type (activity, lesson plan, or video).

One more amazing offering from Ward’s Science is professional development resources. This comes to you on their YouTube channel with more videos than I could count on a lot of science topics such as 3D printers, probes, tarantulas, introductions to a variety of products, quantum dots, and so much more. I admit, when I first received this kit, I didn’t get the name–Crazy Circuits with Squishy Circuits. I couldn’t get my brain around all those words until I unwrapped the box and pulled the parts out. Then I got it: This had a ton of promise. If you’ve ever made Play Dough at home or in science class and used it as conductors and insulators–that’s the squishy part. When you poke circuits that light up or run motors or a bunch of other stuff into the dough–that’s the crazy part. With this relatively inexpensive kit, a wide age range of students learn about seemingly complicated topics such as insulators, conductors, resistance, and parallel and series circuits.

This is ready to go out of the box which means no soldering required.

How to Use it

The Crazy Circuits With Squishy Circuits kit includes six containers of colored squishy dough–some conductive and some insulating–and a variety of Crazy Circuits Chips. You don’t have to make anything or buy anything else. Detailed directions, project guides, educational resources, and videos can be found online in the Ward’s Science database. Crazy Circuits are compatible with LEGO

and similar brick building systems.

If you’re wondering how squishy dough can conduct electricity, watch this 4-minute TED Talk. Though the video shows how to make the dough, you don’t have to do that. Ward’s Science sends it as part of the kit. You just attach the circuits, motors, and conductors, and let your creativity flow:

Avoid the Table Tantrums: 6 Clever Ideas for Hosting a Kid-Friendly Holiday Feast

Fancy adult dinner parties are a festive part of the season, but of course kids will be joining the fun at holiday events, too. So instead of relegating them to a sad little card table in the corner, why not make their experience as attractive—and entertaining—as yours?

Perhaps you’re worried about things breaking, stuff spilling, and kids crying. Not to fear! You can create a classy vibe at your holiday buffet that’s also almost entirely kid-proof. Plus, your family and friends are sure to appreciate the effort (and will hopefully reward you with wine and treats). The kiddies will be pretty darn happy, too.

Not sure where to start? Here are six ways to set up a holiday table and food buffet so the little people in your house can party down, too.

1. Get creative to create a real kids’ table

Unless you’re frequently hosting hordes of children at your home, you might not have a kid-size table where they can feel like they’re having their own dinner party while you have yours.

But you don’t necessarily need to run out and buy a kid-specific table. You can get creative, as long as you get the dimensions right, says Julie Coraccio, an organizing pro at Reawaken Your Brilliance.

“We like to push together a coffee table or two with smaller chairs for kids’ seating,” she says.

You could also cover the top of a train or Lego table with a piece of plywood. And if you don’t have enough tiny chairs, pull up an ottoman, pouf, or footstool. Booster seats give tots a chance to reach the food, but if you don’t own one, grab a big book or pillows.

2. Serve smart—but with style

Shatterproof dishes made of melamine, bamboo, or study paper are the way to go when it comes to feeding the young’uns.

“For kids’ buffets and tables, we like to use banana leaf palm plates or the appetizer version of the plate on the adult buffet,” says Andrea Correale, president of Elegant Affairs, a catering company.

Pick a bright tablecloth or festive placemats, and decorate the table with peppermints, candy canes, or glitter confetti. Paper napkins are fine, but you could also elevate the look with smaller linen or cotton ones—kids can be classy, too!

“If you’re creating a kids’ buffet, bundle their utensils in a rolled-up napkin so it’s easier to carry,” Correale suggests.

3. Put a lid on it

Who doesn’t love swirly straws? Offer them at the kids’ table to poke into cups or jars with a ready-made hole in the lid. And nix paper cups (they tend to topple over) in favor of colorful plastic tumblers.

“Keep these drinks cold by stashing them in a labeled cooler on the floor for easy access,” Correale says. Place a folded beach towel under the cooler to catch drips. (You’ll be glad you did.)

4. Keep little hands busy

It can take a while for people to churn through a buffet, so it’s smart to arrange a creative activity at the kids’ table while they wait.

Roll out a long piece of butcher block paper to doodle on, suggests Coraccio. Place crayons, colored pencils, or washable markers in short cups, and put them in between place settings so two kids can share. “It makes for easy cleanup, too.”

You can also search online for printables to match the season (turkeys and Pilgrims for Thanksgiving, Santas and trees at Christmas). Roll several into a tube shape, tie the bundle with a piece of ribbon, and then place one at each spot.

Fidget spinners, stickers, or tiny containers of Play-Doh can also do the trick.

5. Choose a yummy centerpiece

Skip flowers in a vase, which might tip over and spill if the table is bumped. Instead, consider an edible fruit arrangement for the centerpiece or pile candy canes into silver julep cups and add small votive candles around them.

Don’t forget place cards at each chair so kids know where they’re sitting. You could tuck sturdy pieces of card stock into pine cones or tie name tags to chocolate Santas.

6. Create a separate kids’ buffet

Set up a smaller version of the adult buffet.

Getting kids served quickly will help prevent meltdowns, so take a page from the pros.

“For a large group or one with kids, arrange two buffets in two spots, like the dining room and kitchen island or at opposite ends of the same room,” Correale recommends. With two lines, the crowd will move along and you’ll promote good flow at your party.

And be creative with your kiddie buffet, says Alexa Lemley, executive chef at Artisan Foodworks. Lemley likes to repurpose a Radio Flyer wagon because the food sits on it at the right height.

“The ones with wooden sides are perfect for creating a buffet—just place a piece of plywood on top,” she says.
