| haerin sucks!
synopsis: not your average vampire — haerin lives a life working night shifts at an empty convenience store every night until before the sun rises up, she's also got her eyes on a girl whose favorite past time is to pretend she's a vampire's girlfriend.
— nonidol!vampire!khaerin × nonidol!highschool!fem!reader
/╲/\╭(•‿•)╮/\╱\/╲/\╭(•‿•)╮/\╱\/╲/
"hyein what the hell?" haerin slams her hand on the counter as she watches her younger friend walking to the exit of the convenience store with a box of chocolate in her hands, with a disbelief expression — haerin, as if this hasn't been happening multiple times still cannot believe her friend could do such a thing. "what's up?" hyein even gets the courage to turn her whole body around with a smile.
lee hyein is another employee of this store owned by mr. kim taehyung, but unlike haerin, hyein is not a vampire and actually gets to live her life like any other ordinary person, except maybe she's insufferable sometimes. haerin used to do so too, but it's been a long time since she's felt the touch of the sunlight, nor have drank anything other than blood. it doesn't even help the fact that haerin looked like she's never had a bed to sleep on, the bags under her eyes are evident, it's as if it's carrying all the weight in this world. not to mention her pale skin, her lips the color of her cheek, porcelain white and literally no signs of life on her body.
it's only been 5 months since that unfortunate incident she had in this very same convenience store, where her life flashed before her eyes and she came out of the storage room as a different person and a different kind of species that night.
haerin rubs her eyes and glares at hyein. "why are you stealing another box of chocolate?" haerin points at hyein with a frown, brows furrowing and her eyes are barely moving. hyein raises the box with a confused look on her face, as if she doesn't get the idea why haerin would be mad.
"i'm borrowing it..." hyein states, she's always like this, there are times after her shift she doesn't steal but more like take something off the store and promises that she'll pay for it through her salary. no matter how hair says she hates when hyein does that, she had never snitched and told mr. kim taehyung, instead she takes an amount of money from hyein's salary and brings it back to the shop's money.
haerin puts a hand on her face, rubbing her forehead before sighing. "hyein — " she stops, looking up at hyein with a glare. "just watch out, goddamn it. if mr. kim taehyung finds out about this i'm dead." haerin grumbles, thinking about how horrible the store's owner is. he's so selfish! not only is he a notorious gambler, he is also very evil and takes his anger out on his minions a.k.a. the innocent people he turned into vampires.
technically, it's not him who turned haerin into one of his kind — but his sister, kim minji, that evil prick. haerin remembers that night, in this same convenience store. she was just a hopeless teenager who is trying to find a part time job, with her papers she carried them with her soul in this convenience store only to get bitten by a rabies infested younger kim. that asshole lied about it being a requirement, saying it had to be done and haerin couldn't be more regretful about everything.
now she's stuck inside this hellhole forever. with a grumpy evil owner, and a tall teenage girl.
great, just how great it is.
"he won't! he's like always away and it's not like you'll tell him, right?" hyein clutched the door, looking at haerin with begging eyes that she couldn't say no to.
"damn it, alright. just go!" haerin looks away and grumbles, watching hyein flee with stolen goods and she watches the taller girl disappear under the dark skies.
then there's the annoying, good for nothing customers — for a bunch of people who purchase nothing but the cheapest thing in the store, they do sure talk a lot. haerin hates this the most about her job, other than being a weak, fragile, coward, and awkward vampire — she's also terrible at customer service, she hates having to spend time helping strangers with the most basic stuff. that's common sense!
oh how much haerin hates talking to people, let alone doing something for them but this was her only choice, other than old vampire men who abuse the capitalist system, there's no one else in this world who would hire a weakling like her. haerin's conscience couldn't even get her to kill a bird to eat, it's just too much.
she's lost everything after what minji did to her, she had to drop out of school — with her roommate's (danielle) help, it's too hard for her and it's almost as if there's no hope left for someone like her. luckily, danielle is helping haerin to get her signed up at a work from home job, which might benefit her considering she's quite smart and all they're waiting is the result of the interview.
seriously, haerin would be nothing without her kind roommate...
that girl is working overtime to look for hospitals that sell donated bloods, at this point the city probably thinks she's a maniac, all that just to help haerin cause the girl is too weak to actually kill someone. that's where her biggest problem lies, how is she supposed to keep living with literally just donated bloods? she's too weak for a vampire, most of the time she looks like someone sucked the life out of her (which is true) still, even vampires find her ridiculous.
"welcome..." haerin mutters as someone enters the store, haerin is too absorbed by her daydreams to even care who entered maybe until she hears the voice. "uhm, do you guys have any adhesive here? like super glue or something like that..." haerin's eyes shoot up and she looks up to see you standing by the nearest aisle, looking for any strong adhesive available. haerin's eyes focus on the girl just a few meters away, and it feels like she has nothing to say.
you notice the delay in haerin's response and take a peek at her from the aisle you were standing behind, your eyes met haerin and she feels like she's about to explode. "u-uh, i think we have them... here at the counter." haerin stutters, taking a breath with a small curse in her head — she doesn't understand why she's like this around you, even before she turned into a vampire.
you've always been giving her the worst types of emotions ever.
"oh, okay." you smile and make your way to the counter, reaching over to the adhesive and the lighter. "i should also get this." you whisper to yourself, as if making a small conversation. haerin feels her fingers shake, not knowing what to do and she stretches her arm a bit to reach over to the items in your hand — when she did she feels like turning into a block of ice, right at that moment she's freezing from head to toe.
you look at her, totally not realizing the severe effect you have on her. haerin shuffles to immediately scan the items, get the amount of money to pay and then the receipt — even though she's liked you for ages, haerin always gets the urge to ask you to leave; immediately! it's hard for her to stay still when you're out there looking so damn pretty, even after she's turned into a vampire her feelings for you have never changed.
to haerin's dismay, you didn't leave — instead you stay there and give her a worried smile. "how come i never see you at school again?" you ask, tilting your head a bit to see her face better. haerin feels like shrinking, or she's always felt small when you're in her sights.
it's bad.
you noticed her absence, even if you never talked to her — you're from another class, just one door away from her room... yet haerin had always made sure to get a glimpse of you, when you're busy working with the science club or when you're just existing.
it never occurred to haerin that you'd even notice her presence, let alone care enough to ask her about it. it's bad, it's really bad...
"uhm, i changed my schedule... i'm taking irregular classes." haerin puts her hand on her forehead, trying to find that familiar warm feeling on her skin yet there was nothing.
she tries to avoid your eyes but you keep looking at her. "oh really? no wonder, it must be a bit complicated for you." you tell her, yet you were quite hesitant if you were going to believe... you really haven't seen her at all in the past few months, that it started to worry you because you've familiarized yourself to haerin's existence when she visits your club which is located at the library.
"yeah... it is." haerin mutters, closing her eyes for a second, enough for her to snap back and for you not to notice. you don't want her to feel uncomfortable, so after paying you leave — feeling quite disappointed you couldn't talk to her more.
haerin curses when you leave, finally able to breathe properly again.
she's not a vampire, which means it must be hard for her to locate the usual emotions she feels when you're around. it's not the same anymore, there's no heartbeat, no blushing, and the same warmth isn't there anymore. it feels so different that haerin isn't used to it, still couldn't get herself to get used to it and it's starting to piss her off.
her shift finishes, she doesn't want to think about you again when she shakes her head and starts pedalling her bike before the sun starts peeking out of the sky.
when she gets home, danielle rambles about the current happenings in her life, which were — thankfully, interesting. danielle doesn't forget to remind haerin about the bags of blood and then to particularly the second best part of her day (first is seeing you again and finding out you actually care about her existence more than she does herself), haerin got the work from home job and can start next week, meaning she doesn't have to rely on her stupid convenience store job.
"that's great." haerin sits on the couch, looking up at danielle who nods and clasps her hands together. "i know right! i mean, god you don't have to keep worrying about losing your job under mr. kim taehyung!" danielle chirps, clearly happy about her friend's start of an actual good story.
haerin sighs, of relief for a second.
she really can't lose her convenience store job but not for the salary, rather than the fact mr. kim taehyung and minji might hunt her down for betraying a trust that's never been there from the start.
"still, i should stay for a bit until the big guy finds his next target — i mean, i can't risk being hunted down by them." haerin shrugs, danielle frowns and nods. "you're right, i mean — no offense but, you're not fit enough to defend yourself. not against minji and definitely mr. taehyung." danielle speaks, to which haerin agrees.
"for the meantime, let's not worry about that stuff... let's focus on the good things!" danielle points at the ceiling, causing haerin to laugh but she agrees again. "you're right." she says, a smile on her lips.
maybe it's the world playing tricks on her but, haerin sees you with niki — nothing too special about him except the fact he's lying about being a vampire. you work at a clothing shop, specifically catering to those who have gothic, emo or punk sense of style. he's a regular customer apparently, and he's always bragging about being a vampire — talking about how it's hard for him to stay at the sunlight, how he's constantly on the hunt for blood, those are tales you usually see in medias portraying lies about vampires.
and you're not usually stupid but for some reason — you believe him, heck, you were even amazed! haerin had always remembered your small interests in things like vampires, gothic church architectures and stuff like that — it is to no surprise you've watched a lot of movies about vampires, read conspiracy theories and imagined stuff...
this dude is gay... haerin curses herself for being mean, but it was true!
it must be just her vampire senses... but she's got this feeling niki is gay, aside from your obvious crush on him — how could you or how could he not notice it? he's always around boys and gets so giddy around guys, when he's with you he acts as if he doesn't care sometimes he's just gonna flaunt about his obviously fake vampire life.
it's super annoying that sometimes haerin has to witness you fawning over him in the convenience store late at night when him and his friends are getting ready with their illegal racing shit.
haerin receives a message from minji, to which she scoffed.
asshole
minji: hey when you start your shift later make sure to meet me outside the store.
minji: i need you to get me some stuff to my car.
and here comes minji, she's also part of the whole illegal racing stuff — funny but minji actually knows you too, haerin assumes it's because of the fact you're always on niki's tail and that niki has friends that take part in the racing community who knows minji.
haerin starts to wonder if you have ever had a conversation with minji, for sure that girl also knows about niki's whole facade.
haerin sighs and puts her arm on her face, regret sipping on her mind again, even hatred and bitterness comes at the tip of her tongue; there's an urge to curse minji as well as niki, but for some reason she couldn't say it.
"i hate this so much..." haerin grunts.
"come here!" haerin blinks and when she opens her eyes she's met with her worst nightmare.
kim minji.
who shouts from the entrance of the store with a demanding tone, gesturing haerin to get out of the store. minji stomps down to the parking spot and haerin follows, quite lethargically with a small frown. it's late at night, and it's only the two of them right now but haerin guessed that minji is probably waiting for her minions.
"my friends are arriving in less than 5 minutes," minji starts to talk and digs her large hand in her pocket to get a severely crumpled paper and shove it towards haerin. "go get me the things listed on that paper and put it on my trunk." haerin tries to remember what job she signed up for, did she sign up to be this gaint-sized toddler's maid?
although it would be nice to teach minji a lesson, haerin knows this girl likes to deal with things physically so it's not a good idea — it's not so ideal to get thrown by someone bigger than you, so all haerin could do was nod and go.
when haerin comes out with the box of beers, she squints her eyes to see you talking to minji — she had her eyes on you, like so focus! even leaning on her car as she speaks, suddenly turning into the nicest vampire around like she just wasn't bossing haerin earlier. this is bad haerin tells herself and she wants to smack her head somewhere, maybe the roof of minji's definitely not super cool car just to get her mad? oh no, that's not a very bright idea.
haerin walks around and carefully puts minji's junk on her trunk, acting like she didn't see you but you did see her! so you move away from minji's car and wave at haerin.
"haerin! hi!" you greet her with a very bright smile, haerin's eyes try not to shift away from yours but she starts to grow nervous — because of you or maybe because minji is staring daggers at her. haerin nods her head but says nothing until maybe she realizes it was better to greet you back. "ah hi y/n." haerin knows the more she stands there the more angry minji gets.
there's nothing worse than an angry bear slash vampire.
"oh you're working? sorry, i didn't mean to bother it's just — i was just happy to see you again!" you tell her, haerin smiles back before nodding.
"yeah me too—"
"okay now don't you have things to fetch there? why not go back and finish it first." minji cuts her off with her rubbish tone, causing haerin to get startled and run back to the store.
you look at minji and wonder what's gotten into her.
"are you okay?" you ask her and she looks at you with her round eyes and says.
"oh definitely, look why don't you head to the meeting place with my friends? i just have some stuff to pick up here but i'll follow."
you nod and immediately get inside one of her friends' car who she called for.
haerin comes back outside with a box of chips and yelps as minji pulls her behind by her collar. "woah! what's wrong with you!?" haerin clutches her collar and grunts, eyes glaring at minji who scoffs at her.
"what's with you and y/n?" minji asks, eager for an immediate answer.
haerin shakes her head, even though she hates minji of course she's still scared — she has no idea what this prick could do.
"nothing! we're schoolmates before, she knows my roommate... why don't you ask that to niki?" haerin talks back, but immediately feels minji letting go of her collar and she chokes back her breath.
"who now? that gay boy?" minji chuckles and clutches her before bursting into a fit of laughter — getting a startled stare from haerin.
"there is no way! what..?" minji looks up at haerin and continues to laugh.
"yeah, y/n likes him a little."
minji looks at haerin as if she can't believe what was said, haerin walks backwards a bit, feeling minji's taller figure approach her menacingly.
"i feel like you're lying to me just like how niki lies about him being a vampire."
haerin sighs, of course minji knows about that but haerin knows she's not lying because she is scared to face it. "minji, i swear. i mean, isn't it obvious with y/n's particular interest in vampires?" haerin tries to stand properly just in case minji tries to blow a punch on her, which thankfully she's never done before but haerin does not want that to happen.
haerin realizes minji must also like you, a lot. "you shouldn't be threatened by him." haerin mutters enough for minji to hear, minji pushes haerin by her shoulder rough but not rough enough for haerin to fall. "you're crazy if you think i'm scared of that clown." minji looks around and then back at haerin.
minji with her pride, she pushes her hair back and sighs. "y/n should be with me." she mutters before hopping on her car and leaving haerin standing like an idiot.
what the hell was that? haerin slams her head on the counter, sighing. she already has zero chance to have you now it's reduced to negative? how bad can her life get?
haerin ruffles her own hair and groans.
another night again, she's on her way to her work and she stumbles upon an alley that feels unfamiliar — she walked almost a hundred times here already but she's felt something weird here.
she continues to walk further and sees minji cornering a random man and in the corner of her eyes she sees you.
"minji!" she calls for the girl who had her hands on the man's collar.
"get out of here!" minji yells back causing haerin to step back. "b-but—! mr. kim taehyung!" haerin stutters and sees minji slam the guy on the wall.
you stood behind watching everything unfold, minji's unusual strength and your eyes meet haerin. "take y/n out of here or else i'm gonna punch you!" minji shouts and haerin immediately scrambles to reach for your hand and pulls you away.
"let's go!" haerin says and you turn your head behind to look at minji. "but how about her?!"
"just leave it to her! she can manage herself!" haerin says running until you both were somewhere in the middle of the main street. haerin sighs thinking about how screwed she is that she isn't at work yet.
minji really told her to take you. she's sometimes so stupid.
haerin takes her phone.
lee hyein
haerin: hyein! please... cover for me for a bit!
haerin: i'm going to be super lateee and i need you to stay there.
haerin: i'll let you take food with you and i'll pay for it!
hyein: thanks! i was about to say no but that's a nice deal!
"what's up with minji? she's so strong? i bid her goodbye and when i was being harassed she immediately knew where i was?" you ask haerin, as if she knew — technically she did but it's not like she's gonna say it. haerin wipes the sweat off of her forehead. "she's just like that — she knows every corner in this place and she's of course strong." haerin sighs.
you take a step closer to haerin, scanning her face all over. "are you okay? you look really stressed out." you tell her, taking a peek at her face. haerin closes her eyes and nods. "i'm just worried, ugh — she's so reckless, if she gets in trouble my boss will kill me."
it's not supposed to be some kind of exaggeration, she's serious about mr. kim taehyung comes for her ass once minji comes home with a bruise or gets tangled with the police officers roaming.
"are you worried she's not gonna come out okay?" you ask while putting a hand on her shoulder, haerin freezes, then she looks at your hand and to your face. not necessarily about minji well being, more on the fact that police are now on the hunt for vampires who are the reason why the town's currently in shambles.
"yeah, she's so reckless." haerin says and immediately looks away.
haerin scratches the back of her head and proposes an idea. "i should probably accompany you home, that's probably what minji wants me to do." you look at her with a confused expression.
"we're not gonna wait for her?"
haerin nods and gulps. "her pride can't take that, besides she's gonna ask me about you later."
haerin starts walking and you skip your way to follow behind her, it doesn't matter that the sky is pitch back, the stars are not visible from your view probably because of the air pollution — and the only thing you see is haerin's back under the street lamps.
haerin is still stressing.
"i did miss you."
you start talking and haerin looks behind you and stops walking.
"what?" she asks.
you stare at her and smile, chuckling a bit.
"why not? i always see you at school, i mean yeah we're not friends and barely had any conversation but i was kind of fond of your presence somewhere..." you roll your eyes playfully and shrug, haerin still is speechless.
"uhm, i didn't know that." haerin mutters, looking away and trying not to cower away.
you laugh awkwardly, walking past her.
"i guess you don't probably feel the same, which is okay — i never found you to be the type to bond over strangers and small things." you speak, walking slowly and haerin starts to follow behind.
"no! it's just, i didn't think you'd think it's a big deal. i left and that's all." haerin is now the one trying to catch up, there was not much of a gap but it feels like haerin is trying to reach for something she cannot get a hold of.
you hear her say she left and turned around.
"you left..?" you remember her saying she took a different schedule, guess maybe vampires don't have sharp memory.
"huh? wait what did i say?"
"you said you left? but last time you told me you changed schedule and is now an irregular student." you look at her with an accusing look, why does it matter so much? what if she really did leave school? why should you care about it?
you don't know too.
all you knew is that you cared for her, even just for a bit.
"i did say that... and it's true—"
"you're not that good at lying." you cut her off, staring at her and she stops walking to stretch her hands to try and reach but she stops to put it on her head, opting to fix her hair and sighing.
"can i... yeah — i did drop out." haerin puts her hands on her face.
"that's it. it's not that hard."
haerin slowly puts her hands down like a poor kitten.
"are you mad at me for lying?" haerin asks and you stare at her before laughing. "no, i'm just worried. you've been gone for so long and i started wondering what happened to you."
haerin shakes her head. "i didn't want you to have a different view of me."
you cross your arms and sigh. "no matter what happens, i'm never gonna change how i look at you!" you tilt your head and smile at her.
"even if i was a monster?" haerin asks.
you pause and stomp your feet, raising your hands. "even if you're a cockroach or a worm!"
haerin blinks and nods. "that's nice."
you turn yourself around and start walking again, haerin watches and sighs for almost a thousand time.
"sometimes i want to be a vampire, just because i think it's very cool..." you raise your hands to the sky, as if reaching for something that's not there — haerin continues to watch, almost forgetting how short her time is outside.
"like — i want to dress so elegantly, just the darkest colors out there, my closet so perfect... i want to live in a mansion, get serve by maids and stuff... i want to live for a long time like those vampires in the books and movies."
haerin blinks and you look up, closing your fist and eventually bringing them down.
"have you ever seen a vampire working on a minimum wage job?" haerin asks, you turn your head to look at her and laugh. "huh?" you chuckle.
haerin shrugs and continues to walk, you turn your head away again and continue walking.
"i don't even think i've seen an actual vampire." you tell haerin which surprised her. "what?" haerin mutters.
"yeah... i heard they were real and roaming around our town, it's kind of hard to believe but i guess the police are just making sure."
haerin opens her mouth, pointing her index finger at you.
"but i thought niki was..."
"a vampire?"
you laugh. "you think he's saying the truth?"
haerin immediately shakes her head with her brows furrowed. "no —!"
"— i just thought you thought he was..." she continues.
you shake your head and shrug. "you know niki is actually kind of funny, he has a cool sense of style... he's fun to hang out with and honestly i love how on character he is most of the time — that's all i think about him, why i like hanging out with him."
haerin puffs her chest and breathes out, as if trying to contain herself from saying something so unnecessary. "i agree —! he's also a regular at the store you work at."
now, does that mean you don't have a crush on him? haerin would love to dip her head somewhere cold.
you eventually stop in front of your house, and you turn around to look at her and smile. "it's almost 5 am..." you tell her and haerin's face contorts into an unknown expression. "what..?" she whispers.
"can i tell you something? i was thinking if we can go out —"
"i should go now!" haerin scrambles and starts running, leaving you confused on your own standing in front of your house.
haerin feels like her soul is about to fly out of her body, she's running so fast in order to get ahead of the sun that's about to rise.
no... no, no, no, no, no!
haerin chants inside her head, wishing for the sky to stop moving and the earth to stop rotating. it's so over for her once the orange starts peeking out of the clouds.
and there's a loud boom of engine and haerin almost trips when she stops and sees minji's familiar car.
"get in you loser!" she hears minji's aggressive voice and that made her immediately climb inside the passenger seat and close the door — taking a deep sigh of relief.
"your seatbelt." minji simply says and that has haerin putting the seatbelt around her immediately and leaning on the seat with a loud grunt.
the car drives around the neighborhood and it's quiet.
"god, are you okay? were there cops chasing you?" haerin asks, looking at minji — minji glares at haerin and scoffs. "no, so don't worry about being murdered by my brother —"
"he is so violent when he's angry!" haerin fights back.
"can we stop talking about him? be honest with me." minji looks at the road again, hands on the steering wheel.
"what?" haerin looks at the window, taking in the view of the sunrise. "do you like y/n?" haerin sighs when hears minji asking.
"no —"
"i said be honest with me." minji cuts her off.
"did you get rejected?" minji chuckles and answers. "you're bold, kang. she just happened to not be my type after some time talking to each other."
"'cause she wasn't fawning over you probably, wait — why are you even asking?" haerin grumbles, minji takes a look at the younger girl and shakes her head.
"you're so bad at many things — even lying." minji says.
haerin looks at the older one dead in the eyes, she doesn't fail to make fun of haerin's capabilities as if it wasn't her fault.
"so? this is all your fault."
minji sighs and then she chuckles. "i'm sorry, alright? i'm trying to make it up to you."
haerin looks at the lines of houses.
"whatever, why'd you ask anyway?"
minji takes a swift turn, talking so smoothly.
"i think y/n likes you."
that made haerin fall, literally — as the car stops abruptly causing haerin to lose her posture, figuratively — as she remembers what you told her.
going out...
y/n :)
y/n: did i say something wrong?
haerin stares at your message when she runs to their shared house and immediately closes the door.
y/n :)
haerin: i'm so sorry i ran away!
haerin: minji needed me.
haerin: and yes! let's go out together!
y/n: great! it's a date by the way...
haerin puts her hand on her face before sliding down the door, receiving quite a stare from her roommate.
she receives a message again but from hyein.
lee hyein
hyein: you asshole...
hyein: why'd you leave me here!!???
haerin lets go of her phone with a surprised look on her face. "oh my god, my shift!"

Trying to figure out the Ace "murder" method
Hey, it's me again!
Seeing the great reception to my Arei murder theory (which, in case you missed, has an important second version (adult warning for Arei's BDA) and a less important third post, and beyond), I decided to try and figure out a method for the Ace murder attempt from episode 6. That and I have a sorta friendly theory rivalry going on with thebadjoe-
Seems like a fun challenge. Let's get into it!
Truth Bullets
Before the murder:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1- Ace's body and wounds: Ace's body is sitting against a wall, slumped over. His neck has what seem to be three slice-type wounds across the front. These are the only visible wounds we know of. His face is angry, but this being Ace, it'd be weirder if it wasn't.
Tumblr media
2- Bloodstain on the wall: There is a faint bloodstain just behind Ace's neck. Notably, this is the only trace of blood outside of Ace and the wires.
3- Lone wire: Because I clearly didn't have enough thinking about ropes and pulleys in the other murder, this one involves a wire! That's practically just a sharp rope! Notably, there is blood around a huge chunk of the middle of the cable, and a bit on one of the sides.
Tumblr media
4- Wire taped to the fan: There is another piece of wire, wrapped around and taped to the broken ceiling fan. There is blood on the end of the wire not connected to the fan. The roll of tape used is right there. Fun fact, the tape actually dissappears from the background in the middle of the investigation, as pointed out by thebadjoe. Eden took it. This has more to do with the other murder than this one, but it's something to consider.
Tumblr media
5- Broken fan: The fan on the right (door view) is broken, and on the ground.
6- Moved benches: Two benches have been moved from their original position. The one on the left is just moved to the side, while the one on the right is toppled over next to Ace. Notably, it's under the broken fan, meaning it must have toppled over before the fan got there.
7- Stool: There is a stool.
I have genuinely no idea where the hell this thing came from. It wasn't in any of the second floor rooms, or any of the first floor rooms we've seen. Was it in storage?
Tumblr media
??????????????????
Hey, how fucking far did they drag this thing?! I have to imagine it was somewhere else, as there are actually a few doors which have never been opened, such as in the laundry room.
Whatever, no one cares. There's a stool, let's live with that.
8- Broom: There is a broom. I really hope they didn't get this from storage as well.
9- Toppled over weight rack: The weight rack has been moved closer to the... lifting bench thing, and now lay sprawled across the floor. Yeah, I got no idea about gym terminology.
10- Isolated weights: There are two small weights off to the side. Yep, they sure do exist.
11- Non-functioning fan: The fan on the left isn't moving (I know you can't tell from the picture, but trust me on this). This is especially strange, as we see the same fan moving the next day when Teruko and Rose go to the gym, despite the other fan still being gone.
12- Clean pull-up bar: The tape which was around the pull-up bar since the first day the second floor opened has disappeared.
13?- ???: So, uh, I got no idea what's going on in this general area. Apart from the bench press bar apparently disappearing, there seems to be a whole ass chunk of a mirror missing, which makes absolutely zero sense. It almost looks like someone took a bite off the damn thing, but I don't think anyone here eats glass, not even MonoTV. I imagine this is an animation error, but I'll point it out anyways in case it's somehow important.
14- Rose's account: During her painting session with Nico, her turpentine went missing.
15- Teruko's account: "[Ace] stayed unconcious for much longer than can be explained by blood loss or asphyxiation." Teruko believes this means Ace was likely knocked out with Rose's turpentine. Now, why she believes this when turpentine inhalation cannot cause unconciousness, only vomiting and nausea at worst, is beyond me. But since no one ever corrects her, I believe turpentine just... works differently in the DRDT universe.
16- Banging noise: Shortly before Eden and Teruko entered the crime scene, they heard a strange banging noise which came from the gym, followed by a clattering sound. This noise is... definitely strange, and in fact, I struggle to say what exactly it was. Since it doesn't match anything perfectly, I guess it must either be the weight rack toppling, or the fan falling. Also, this noise must have been caused by Nico, as no one else ran out of the gym afterwards.
Tumblr media
17- Nico's missing cloak: Nico's usual cloak (that's what it's called, right?) is nowhere to be seen. Where the hell it went is a fantastic question, but the fact they don't have it in the first place could mean a lot of different things. Also to note, Nico doesn't have any blood on them.
Tumblr media
I believe that about covers it. Let's see what we can manage. Also, I apologize in advance if it seems like this isn't very structured, I'm doing the best to explain my reasoning step by step.
What was Nico doing?
This may seem like an odd question to start with, but it's actually one which gives way to one of the most fundamental truths of the crime. One which I need to establish before getting anywhere in terms of theorizing. No, I'm not about to claim Nico didn't try to murder Ace, It's something else.
The answer seems obvious at first: they were clearly killing Ace, right? Well, not so fast. Nico was standing quite far from the body, yet holding a wire covered in blood. It almost looks like they just stumbled into an already established crime scene and were just investigating. Some claim this means Nico wasn't the one who set up most of the crime, but we have to remember this line:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Charles: But did you not intentionally try to make a serious attempt on Ace's life? Answer honestly.
Nico: Y... Yes...
Nico admits to, at some point, having tried to kill Ace. Of course, this isn't conclusive, but there is actually something else which makes me believe Nico might be the sole culprit of this almost-murder. A piece of evidence I haven't seen anyone mention in detail before.
The isolated weights.
Tumblr media
What's the issue with this weights? Well, there are three truths which make them particularly strange.
1- The fact they're isolated means they were likely involved in the murder method.
2- They are decently far from any other piece of evidence.
3- They are neatly stacked on top of each other.
The fact they're neatly stacked means someone put them like that intentionally, yet they were clearly involved in the murder method. However, if they were involved in the method, how are they this far from everything else?
Well, let me answer those questions by raising others in return. Why is Ace so far from the wires, and why was Nico holding one of them? Why are the weights the only thing in the room which seem to be placed intentionally, when everything else is all over the place? When did Nico lose their cloak? What did they do to make that banging noise?
All these questions lead me to one answer. Nico wasn't actively trying to murder Ace when Eden and Teruko entered the scene, they were cleaning the crime scene. This could include moving Ace's body around, screwing around with the wires in a way which broke the fan, and, the important part, instinctively stacking the weights on top of each other. Maybe because Nico was getting bothered by the general mess of the room, or something like that (I know I would try to put some order in the room if I was nervous), and the weights were the easiest things to move around.
Whatever the reason Nico had for moving the weights, the point is, they did. This movement clearly didn't have anything to do with the actual method, as again, the weights were pretty far from everything, so it seems to me like they were just sorta "cleaning". And the reason everything else is in disarray is because they weren't done when Teruko and Eden got there.
Of course, you may be unconvinced. You may have questions like "why didn't Nico check Ace was dead dead?". But I promise, this will all make more sense as I explain further, so for now, let's assume Nico was cleaning the crime scene.
What does that mean? It means the position of most of the objects in the room could have changed between the time the attack was carried out, and the moment Teruko and Eden entered the gym.
With this possibility in mind, let's take a deeper dive into some of the evidence.
Two Wires on a Bird
(Wait, that's not how the song-)
Now, as you may remember, there were two pieces of wire in the gym; one by itself, and one taped to the fan. A lot of people assume these two were pieces of the same wire, which was broken when the fan went down, probably.
However, I do not believe this is the case. Remember, these wires are metal. From what I could find, their black color could imply they may be aluminum or iron, for example. These have, scientifically speaking, a fuckton of tensile strength. You would need a force of no less than an elephant stampede to break that with tension alone. They can be broken, quite easily with enough effort and tools, but not easily snapped.
No, I believe the answer is much simpler. There were always two wires; there was never an unintentional breakage. If these two things were ever one solid piece of wire, the would-be-murderer must have separated them before they set up their scheme, with whatever they could find. Maybe there could be tools in storage? Not too important.
But, beyond stealing the turpentine, is there really any evidence the killer really thought the method through with that much anticipation? After all, there is this line:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Veronika: Is this what you were envisioning when you tried to kill Ace? That the trial would happen like this, but with Ace instead of Arei dead?
Nico: I didn't... I never thought about it... I...
If Nico is the sole culprit as I'm claiming, doesn't that line mean there wasn't much forethought on Nico's part?
Don't worry, I'll explain that line later. For now, let me show you that the almost-killer absolutely planned the method in advance.
Broken Fans, Broken Hearts
One of the evidence pieces which confused me the most at first was, without a doubt, the non-functioning fan on the left. Why the hell isn't it moving? It's not the other fan falling, as we see the fan on the left working independantly the next day. Clearly, something happened which broke this fan, and it may have broken the other one as well.
Now, I looked through Google to see how ceiling fans work, see if I can figure something funky out. As a quick and oversimplified explanation, they run a current to create magnetic force which moves a rotor which moves the blades. From this, I thought of maybe using magnets to screw them up, but there aren't any magnets we know of in DRDT. I looked into Nico's laser pointer, but that also went nowhere. Despite the lack of evidence of its use, J's remote was the only thing I could think of for a while.
That is, until I realized one fundamental truth:
I'm an idiot.
The answer is much, much simpler. And it comes from one important question. Why is the tape on the fan facing the ceiling?
Tumblr media
Most people, myself included, see a stool, tape, and tape on a fan, and assume the killer used the stool to reach the fan and put the tape there. But the problem is, that would only allow you to place the wire on the underside of the blades. And I'm pretty sure the fan wouldn't do a cartwheel in midair to land upside down.
No, what the tape's position implies is that the killer had access to the upper side of the fan's blades. This means they were likely able to bring the fans down before the murder, and put them back later. However, it's very likely they wouldn't be completely able to fix them, explaining why the left one isn't moving.
I'm not sure how they'd do that, and it sorta relies again on tools from storage, but it doesn't quite matter. There's no point in taping a wire to a fan unless you want it on the fan, aka close to the ceiling, so the killer must have put them back. They likely did this way before the murder, though that raises the question of why the tape would still be there in that case. I do have an explanation, but it'll have to wait for now.
The fact the killer had this ability to take down and somewhat fix the fans makes the left fan's state trivial. They would just take it down to break it, like they did the fan on the right. Of course, the question is why.
I have two answers. The boring one is that the almost-killer thought having one fan moving while the other was broken would be suspicious, and would make Ace more cautious than just seeing both fans broken.
The more fun answer, but one I don't think makes much sense, is that breaking the fans could make the turpentine more effective. Keep in mind Teruko says it is inhaling the fumes from turpentine which can cause unconciousness, and the fans, moving the air around and stuff, would make it harder for the fumes to really be effective... somehow? Again, impossible to know from real life turpentine, as it doesn't work the same as in DRDT. There are a decent bit of inconsistencies with this answer, but eh. As long as Nico could conceivably believe it would help, they may do it. The killers don't have to always know exactly what they're doing.
Alright, Murder Time!
Now that you know how my brain interprets most of the evidence in the crime scene, it's time to get to the actual method. Just so you can get a taste of the insanity required to come up with something which is at least even slightly believeable, here's a highlight reel of the silliest ideas I seriously considered at one point or another!
-Using the broom to beat the shit out of a fan like a piñata.
-Putting the fan on the treadmill and making it run. Don't ask me how this would work.
-Creating a yoyo with the wire and the isolated weights. I almost wanted this one to be true.
-Creating a weird garrote thing with the wires and the weights.
Alright, got it out of my system. Let's actually start now.
The first thing we have to look at is the blood on the wires.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is, hands down, the part of the crime which drove me the most insane. We need to somehow figure out a way to have blood on quite a bit of the end of the fan-wire, a huge chunk in the middle of the lone wire, and a bit on its right side as well. All of this, while only leaving injuries on the front of Ace's neck, and not the back.
The simplest way to do this would be to "drag" the bloody parts of the wire across Ace's neck, but the question is how to "dodge" the parts which aren't bloody. If you try to think about this for yourself, you're gonna notice this is a lot harder than it seems. The bloody part on the middle of the lone wire is long, but the one on the right is small. Additionally, you have to somehow figure out a way to bloody up the end of the fan-wire, which comes with the problem of "where the hell even is Ace to have his neck cut by this thing".
The first thing I figured out is that the end of the fan-wire was likely attached to the middle of the lone wire, the latter doubled over the point of contact.
Tumblr media
(My art is back with a vengeance)
The lone wire could have even been tied around itself to triple over itself, if the length was still too long for the killer's taste. This would also help to explain the multiple injuries on his neck.
However, the problem with this is that goddamn little bit of blood on the right of the lone wire. It can't be solved by just dragging Ace a bit further, as there's a part of the wire which isn't bloody. This took me a while to figure out. In fact, at one point I was close to calling it quits, and just leaving that bit of blood unexplained.
But then, it came to me. A noose!
If the killer made a noose with the wire (let's assume that's possible), and Ace was dragged along the base of the noose, but not the noose itself, then the point of connection would leave a bloody part of the wire which would appear separated from the rest once you extended it out.
Tumblr media
(The main takeaway from this "drawing" is the noose, don't worry if you don't exactly understand the triple over thing. After all, I'm not even sure it was actually used)
Of course, now we have to ask ourselves why in the hell is the killer making a noose, then having Ace's neck drag across the base of the noose. The first thing which comes to mind is putting the noose around something, something like the pull up bar. That's sorta the only object near the fan I could see this working with. And we know the other end of the wire must have been on the fan.
This all points me to a theory I was already cooking up beforehand. The killer may have used gravity as a weapon, letting Ace's body lean on the wire as it tenses and untenses to slowly slash at his neck. This is sorta the system I'm envisioning.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Obviously the drawings aren't to scale.
Now, if we miraculously (and it really would be a miracle) get this to work, it could explain those damn bloodstains that stumped me for hours. It could also explain the meaning of those isolated plates: if you manage to secure them to Ace's chest, they would weigh him down in such a way that his neck would press harder on the wire, causing more damage. I'll get to the way I believe it's possible the killer secured them later, but for now, this is the gist of my idea.
Now, there are a significant amount of questions and concerns you may raise just by seeing this, so let me address those.
The first concern you may have is the length of the wire system. Keeping in mind the fan-wire is atteched to the end of the blade, it would practically be impossible for this system to work if the fan spins all the way.
For the fan to actually spin automatically and not break anything, the "fan-out" position must exist only when the blade with the wire is as far away from the pull-up bar as possible. With how large the fan is, the end of the wire would be somewhat over the treadmills, maybe a bit closer to the door. The problem is, as the fan spins and the wire "tries to slack" (remember, Ace's neck pressing against it would mean it never fully slacks), it would end up practically touching the floor by the time the blade gets closer to the pull-up bar. Not to mention the issue of Ace's weight possibly fucking with the fan's automatic spin. In other words, it's impossible to create this system if the fan is spinning on its own.
...The sharper of you will have already realized why that argument doesn't work. It's not a problem, because the fan isn't spinning on its own. We established it earlier, remember? The fan was likely broken before the murder attempt even formerly began. That means the fan is spinning manually.
Perhaps that piñata idea wasn't so far off after all, we just needed a gentler touch. Using the broom and probably the stool, the almost-killer would be able to make the fan move on their whim. And this means there's no reason for them to make the fan do full revolutions. If they just move the blades back and forth a little bit, they would be able to "straighten" and "slack" the wire system however they wanted, and wouldn't need the system to extend all the way to the other side of the room. In fact, they would actually want the system to be as short as possible while still reaching from the fan to the pull-up bar, since that simplifies the positioning of Ace's body, as you'll see later.
But before we get to that, I have to answer something else. This method, you may have noticed, wouldn't exactly leave the deepest wounds, would it? I mean, it could definitively cause bleeding, but the wounds would likely be quite shallow, unless the wire is ultra sharp. It seems like a pretty bad murder system if it only leaves mostly superficial wounds.
Except, who told you the wounds weren't superficial? Remember, Ace didn't actually die from this. And although I'm no expert in anatomy, I believe any neck wound would be fatal if it's deep enough. Thus, whatever the method used was, it could only leave shallow wounds.
That still raises the question of why the killer would do this, but I'll get there. For now, let me give you a sneak peek: I believe the attacker knew Ace didn't die from the wire attack. Intriguing, right?
And if you're worried about the amount of blood being too much for shallow wounds, don't worry. As I said, I believe Teruko and Eden ran into the crime scene a while after the crime actually happened, so Ace must have been bleeding for a while. And I'm no forensic expert, but I believe people who are alive bleed faster than corpses, since the heart is still beating and all that. Essentially, there's a lot of blood only because Ace has been bleeding for a while.
Now comes the hardest part of the visualization, and frankly, the one thing which really makes me doubt whether or not this is possible. With the two benches found on the crime scene, you have to play jenga with them and Ace's body in a way which makes sure his head reaches the pull-up bar in the "fan-out" position, and which doesn't run into issues holding his body up in the "fan-in" position. Considering the height of the pull-up bar, I think the best way to do this would be placing the benches parallel to the wire, and Ace's body kneeling perpendicular to it. You might also want to put a space in between the benches for the knees to bend forward, but I'm not sure.
Tumblr media
(Not to scale)
Again, I know this is hard to visualize, and probably harder to pull off, but I don't think it's completely impossible. If anyone has better ideas on how to put the benches, I'd love to hear it.
Now, the sharper of you would realize a problem. As Ace's body flops onto the wire, it's likely going to get pulled forward, but it would also likely slide down towards Ace's chest. That's a problem, since his wounds are only on his neck. However, I have a possible solution for this. You know how I said you could secure the isolated weight plates on Ace's chest to make him press harder onto the wire? Well, if you secure them high and well enough, with tape for example, they might be able to stop the wires from sliding down.
The unfortunate part of this is that we can't be sure if there was any blood on the weights, which there likely would be in this case, since Teruko didn't check them closely. But the bigger issue here is the tape itself: where'd it go?
Well, I'll answer that question with another question. How is there no blood on the floor? Under this method, gravity would make at least a fair bit of blood fall to the floor. There's no way Nico cleaned it up, so how?
Well, if you don't want a liquid to stain a floor, what can you do? You can drape something over the floor so that gets stained instead of the floor. And this is how I plan to explain Nico's missing cloak. Their cloak was draped over the floor in the place where the blood would fall, as to avoid staining the floor with blood. Nico later removed the cloak from the crime scene, possibly leaving it in the dress-up room or somewhere else for the time being.
Now, that sounds ridiculous. Why would Nico leave the crime scene so early? Is there any actual evidence they left at some point?
Well, actually, there is. It's the other place where blood should have been in this method. Since Ace's neck must reach the base of the noose, it would touch the pull-up bar and stain it with blood. Or rather, it would stain the tape on the pull-up bar with blood. The tape which is also missing.
Tumblr media
Before.
Tumblr media
After.
In fact, this missing piece of tape is extremely important evidence for my theory. The fact it's missing means the pull-up bar was involved, possibly being stained with blood. It also means the culprit took evidence out of the crime scene, which helps explain why Nico is missing their cloak. It also gives credence to the theory the killer taped the isolated weights to Ace's chest, since one missing piece of tape could imply two missing pieces of tape. And- hey! That's why the roll of duct tape is still there! They didn't need it for the fan, since that set up was likely done before the murder attempt as established earlier, so they must have used it somewhere else!
Oh yeah, it's all coming together.
And with this, as you've noticed, we've sorta already arrived at my conclusion on the culprit. Since I believe Nico's cloak was involved in the setup, but was later removed, I firmly assert Nico is the sole almost-murderer. After all, even if the killer knocked out Nico and put them in the crime scene or something, there would be no reason to discard their cloak, and if Nico took it out the gym after waking up, there's no reason to return until they tell someone else about the body.
At this point, I should also address the hidden quote I know is gonna be brought up. Like with every character, if you inspect element on Nico's page you get a hidden quote, which in their case is "why should I own up for the mistakes someone else made?". That makes it sound like they didn't do this, but keep in mind, Nico did confirm having attempted to kill Ace, so I don't think it makes sense for the mistake to be "tried to kill Ace". I actually think this line could be a lot darker. I think this line could imply Ace made the mistakes being referred to, and Nico feels as though they don't have to own up for that. Like, "Ace was the one who fucked around, I just made them find out". Though I am admittedly biased towards evil Nico interpretations, so I can't be sure. Also, this could be about something from another chapter entirely.
Now that we sort of have an idea of how the attack could have gone down, we have to start thinking of the clean up. Unfortunately, this part of the plan wouldn't leave many clues behind, so it's largely speculative. Also worth keeping in mind, I believe this started a while before Teruko and Eden even arrived at the second floor.
The first order of business is taking Ace's body out of the mechanism. They would need to gently let it lean on the wire until the fan wouldn't turn anymore, before quickly stepping off the stool and going over. I'll explain why they're so worried about the body later, but for now, trust me bro. They would push the body off the wire, moving the benches to maneuver better, but their movements are sort of sloppy. This results in the rightmost bench falling over, and when they push Ace up against the wall, they do so haphazardly, leaving behind a small blood stain behind his neck. This is unfortunately the only explanation I have for the bloodstain on the wall which still fits all the other evidence. I say unfortunately because it's a sorta odd explanation for something I would usually consider quite important, but I've had enough trying to explain the blood on the wires, I'm not gonna worry too much about this little thing.
After making sure the body is off the wire, Nico would want to take care of the most incriminating evidence first: their bloodstained cloak. They would probably roll it up into a ball to carry it, though I imagine they may wipe some of the blood off the wires as well. After all, it's the one piece of evidence which can be directly be linked back to them. Since they just took the body down, they would also pick up the evidence closest to them; the bloodstained tape on the pull-up bar and the tape and weights on Ace's chest. They decide to leave the weights in the gym for the time being, and carry out the cloak and the pieces of tape, likely leaving them somewhere else on the second floor. I think one of the changing rooms in the dress-up room is the likeliest spot, or the trash can. They were later planning on disposing of it in a better way, I imagine, but I don't think they wanted to leave the body alone too long, since as I said, they may have known Ace was alive.
Timeline-wise, it's hard to say how much time passes between Nico going out and into the gym, and the moment Teruko and Eden meet in the dress-up room. Especially because part of my other theory is that Eden was actually doing some stuff on the second floor at this time. So here's how I see it; when they return to the gym, they put the weights they had just sort of left there one on top of the other, probably move the stool a little, but most importantly, they start trying to figure out a way to take down the wire system. They initially try things like untying the noose or undoing the knot in the middle, but they're worried about blood getting on them or getting cut by the wire. This hesitation on how to take the wire system down is what explains the time difference between the start of their cleaning and the moment Eden and Teruko get there. I am deeply aware this isn't a very satisfying answer to that issue, but I don't think it's too outlandish, especially since Nico is clearly not in the greatest mental state.
Eventually, they decide they're not going to take the wire system down carefully. To avoid getting blood on themselves, the best way would be to rip out the entire system all at once. I imagine they looped the wire around the broom, and pulled hard in one direction. Do it well enough, and I believe both the noose and the knot between the wires would come undone. However, in doing this, Nico also accidentally knocked down the ceiling fan. This causes the banging noise Eden and Teruko hear.
However, Nico doesn't think anyone else is nearby, and thus doesn't worry about the noise. They just pick up the lone wire (by the parts which aren't bloody), which had flown towards them thanks to their broom trick, and stretch it out... because they felt like it. Yeah, I'm not really sure. But I know a lot of people do weird things to calm themselves when nervous, and Nico is not thinking straight. Fixing up the wire could be something they felt compelled to do without logical reason. I hope this makes sense to you as much as it makes sense to me. Regardless, this is what Teruko and Eden catch them doing. Nico runs away, and probably picks up their cloak on the way as to at least have the slightest argument for their innocence. Since the lone pieces of tape are there, Nico probably picks them up too.
That's basically it for what happened, though you may have noticed there is one piece of evidence I never mentioned. That being the toppled over weight rack. However, there's a pretty simple explanation for this, one I have to give credit to thebadjoe for. Essentially, it's possible the weight rack was moved by Ace to train. If he was bench pressing, it would make sense for him to bring the weight rack closer to the... bench press bench? You know what I mean. And then, when the killer attacked them with turpentine, the rack was toppled over in the struggle. There's unfortunately no way to confirm this, as in the ep 11 flashback, Ace is in the gym but the weight rack is not next to the bench press bench. This doesn't disprove anything; Ace could have just been doing literally anything else. But it unfortunately doesn't confirm anything either.
So, there we go! A series of events which more or less explains all the major evidence in the scene and is (hopefully) physically possible! The bloodstains on the wires were a major pain, to the point I will gladly take anything that explains them more or less satisfactorily, and the missing tape on the pull up bar convinces me I'm (hopefully) in the right track.
... Yeah, so there's still a problem.
Hey, OP, what the fuck?
So, once again my "method before motive" way of theorizing arrives at an extremely complicated system which seems to have no purpose at all. If the fan really is broken as I claim, then there's no way for this to be a remote murder, and a lot of this is just unnecessary. Like, why not just cut Ace's neck with the wires using your hands, the way God (MonoTV) intended? And what the hell did I mean when I said Nico started cleaning the crime scene despite knowing Ace was alive?!
So, here comes the most speculative part of my theory. The reason for the method. Initially, one would assume a system like this would be used to get away with the murder without being caught, like most murders in... well, murder mystery stories. However, remember that line I brought up before? The one where Veronika asks about the trial, and Nico claims to have never thought about it?
I think they're telling the truth. I don't think the purpose of the system is to get away with the murder at all.
And it all comes back to the concern I raised about superficial wounds. Like I said, this system seems odd because it wouldn't be able to cause anything but some shallow cuts. But, what if that's the point?
What if Nico designed this method specifically so it wouldn't kill Ace?
That sounds insane, but think about it. If Nico tries to cut Ace's neck with the wires just by using their hands, it's possible they would get over-excited and accidentally cut too deep, killing Ace almost instantly. If that's not what they want, then it would make more sense to set up a somewhat automatic system which runs less risk of cutting too deep. Maybe.
But, didn't Nico confirm they made a serious attempt on Ace's life, like they told Charles? Yes, but they weren't done.
I believe it's possible Nico wanted Ace to wake up after receiving his neck injuries. That way, he'd be weakened by the blood loss and the pain, but still concious when Nico actually killed them. Under this interpretation, Nico wanted Ace to die knowing Nico was stronger than him, not just by using turpentine and cheap tricks, but just in a straight up fight (though with the handicap of the injuries).
Is that too sadistic? Arguably yes, but we still don't know how far Nico's anger is capable of taking them. I'm probably biased since I am a Veronika kinnie at heart, whose love for a character only increases the more evil and fucked up they are. Still, trust me when I say I went insane trying to figure out any method which could explain the fucking bloodstains on those wires as well as everything else, and this one is the best one I've found so far. It's all I have, I gotta work the characters around it somehow, and this is the only way I can think of.
Nico waiting for Ace to wake up also answers a lot of the basic questions of what the hell was going on when Teruko and Eden entered. If Nico really made a serious attempt on Ace's life, why are they standing so far without confirming Ace is dead? Because they know he's not, and are waiting for him to wake up.
The biggest issues I see here (besides the sheer insanity of the idea) are:
-This method still really isn't that reliable at not killing. However, it doesn't have to be; Nico just needs to trust it more than they do their own hands. And the trust Nico has on their own hands could actually be very little knowing how insecure they is about a lot of things. Not a great argument, but it's there.
-If Nico didn't think of the trial at all, there's no reason for them to take the cloak and tape out of the gym. This is admittedly a much more pressing issue, since a lot of my theory hinges on them doing this. My best answer is that they were working mostly on autopilot. Not actively thinking of the trial, but still knowing in the back of their mind that they would have to hide they did this. It's not great, but it's an answer.
-We don't have evidence Nico even had another weapon on them. If Nico wanted to kill Ace after he woke up, they would have likely brought a weapon with them. However, counterpoint; we know they must have had at least one possible weapon, the turpentine bottle. It's a pretty shitty weapon, but break it open and it would be effective enough. Additionally, the fact we don't know where that thing is implies Nico could have been hiding another weapon, but I'm hesitant to claim this, because again, no evidence.
Overall, I think these holes aren't too big, and considering I'm expecting to get lots of things wrong here, I'm comfortable enough with my answer to put it out there for peer review.
Closing Argument
-During the afternoon, the culprit had to get two custom weapons for their plan. One, the turpentine, they stole from Rose during a painting session. The other, Hu's wire, they simply asked for with some vague excuse, as they had a good relation with her.
-Once they got the wire, they split it into two and went to the gym, a while before the victim arrived. They also brought a stepstool and a broom. With them, they took down the rightmost fan, and ductaped one of the wires' end to one of its blades. They managed to put the fan back up, with the wire hidden on top of the blades. However, the fan didn't spin anymore. The culprit also broke the other fan with a similar method, so as to not make the victim suspicious when they entered the gym.
-The culprit waited until the victim entered the gym for their regular nighttime exercise session, likely after feeding the fish in the relax room.
-The victim, Ace, wanted to do some bench pressing, so he brought the weight rack closer. They didn't notice anything amiss, until the culprit entered the gym.
-With a rag filled with turpentine (maybe; it's impossible to know how people in the DRDT universe would use turpentine as a sedative), the culprit ambushed Ace. Although there was a struggle which knocked over the weight rack, the culprit managed to get Ace to inhale enough turpentine to knock him out. Now, the culprit could have just killed Ace then and there, but that's not what they wanted. They wanted to prove themselves stronger than him, or simply to make them suffer for what he had done to them. In any case, they wanted him to be seriously injured, but not dead by the time the turpentine wore off. Since they couldn't trust their own impulses, they wanted to use a more hands-off method which would ensure Ace would be in serious pain, but not die until the culprit could make sure he felt it.
-Working quickly as nighttime approached, the killer used the broom and stepstool to spin the rightmost fan's blades so as to get the wire taped to it to fall down.
-They tied a noose around the pull-up bar with the other part of the wire. They possibly made the wire triple over itself, and attached the fan-wire to its middle. They also put the non-noose end under the noose on the pull-up bar, for extra stability. For Ace's body, they used the roll of tape to attach two small weights from the rack to Ace's chest.
-With the wire system now hanging slack, like a vine, between the fan and the pull-up bar, they moved the benches under it. The killer also wore a cloak, which they took off and draped over the floor around where they believed the blood would end up.
-They dragged Ace's body to the benches. They propped him up there on his knees, letting his neck press down onto the wire system, specifically a part of the fan-wire. Once they made sure he wasn't going to fall, they quickly made their way to the stepstool, grabbed the broom, and got on it.
-With the broom, they moved the fan's blades manually, not too fast, but with some strength. The wire system pressed hard on Ace's neck, starting to cut his neck as it straightened. Ace's head tilted as this happened, and he started to lean towards the pull-up bar. As his neck dragged over the rolled up lone wire, various shallow cuts opened in his skin. Ace's head touched the pull-up bar's tape, staining it and the base of the noose with blood.
-The killer then slowly allowed Ace's body weight to press on the wire as the fan slowly spun in that direction, the speed controlled by the broom. The wires didn't fall to his chest because of the weights, as well as the slow nature of the descent. His blood stained every spot of the wire his neck dragged across, including the end of the fan-wire.
-The culprit repeated this one or two times, enough to feel as though Ace was sufficiently hurt for their purposes, but not so much they felt he'd die before waking up.
-When they were done, they gently let Ace's body lean on the wire as far as the fan would allow, before dropping the broom and hopping off the stepstool.
-They quickly ran over to Ace, pushing him off the wire system before it could do any more damage to him. In doing this, the bench he was kneeling on fell over, and Ace's body slammed on the wall next to the pull-up bar. The culprit managed to keep him in a sitting position, but the impact with the wall had left a small bloodstain behind Ace.
-The culprit moved the benches a bit to maneuver better around the gym. They took the bloodstained tape off the pull-up bar, retrieved the weights and tape from Ace's chest, and got their cloak off the floor. They used the cloak to wipe a bit of the blood off the wire system, though since it was already covered in blood, some still remained. Not enough to drip off and make a noticeable change on the floor, though. The killer left the weights off to a side in the gym, and ran off with the tape and cloak. They likely hid it somewhere nearby, like the trash can in the hallway or the changing rooms of the dress-up room.
-They came back to the gym at around the same time Eden went to the second floor (this is related to my other theory, don't worry too much about it). They began waiting for Ace to wake up, but their desire for cleanliness guided them in the tense situation. They started trying to figure out a way to take down the wire system without risking injury and without getting blood on themselves.
-A few minutes later, as Teruko went to the second floor and met with Eden, the killer figured out a way to take down the system. They grabbed the broom and wrapped a clean part of the fan-wire around it, before pulling with all their might.
-Several things happened at once. The noose and knot in the point of connection came undone instantly, and the lone wire flew towards the entrance. However, the strength of the pull also took down the fan from the ceiling, making a loud banging noise which could be heard from the hallway.
-The killer didn't think there'd be anyone on the second floor at the time, so they just continued their clean up effort as they waited for Ace to awaken. They grabbed the lone wire by the non-bloody parts and stretched it out, just as Teruko and Eden entered the gym.
-Upon seeing the two girls, the culprit panicked. They dropped the wire and ran away, but still had the sense to quickly pick up their cloak and tape just in case.
-The culprit's plan was to wait until Ace woke up, and in his weakened and pained state, kill him with the bottle of turpentine or some other weapon they had brought with them. And they would have gotten away with it too, if it weren't for those meddling girls!
-The missing cloak, paired with the suspicious lack of blood on the scene; the turpentine theft during a painting session with Rose; the motive to kill Ace in this manner; their actions and presence in the crime scene; all paired with an admission of guilt. The method shows only one person with the ability, opportunity and motive to attempt such a heinous murder: Nico Hakobyan, the Ultimate Pet Therapist!
Conclusion
Is this conclusion perfect? By no means. Nico's actions are still extremely erratic and hard to explain, not to mention how difficult it would be to physically get the method to work. However, it's an answer which I feel sufficiently explains all the evidence in the crime scene, which is shockingly difficult. Those damn bloodstains, man.
Still, I imagine I've gotten quite a few things wrong, so this is more a starting point than a final answer. I just think it's solid enough to put out there and get second opinions on it.
Thanks for reading all the way to end! I would give you a cookie, but I'm afraid it's impossible through a screen. Have a good day!

⭐ director's commentary game for not just a river in egypt :)
Oh bless you <3
Okay, some moments from not just a river in egypt (aka, 'Mercymorn safetylocks Augustine's dick), my totally indulgent ~10k PWP written for no other reason than because I wanted to write some pre-Lyctorhood Canaan House shenanigans. Long-ish so below the cut...
“And how is the Eighth House?” “Thriving, naturally.” “Is it?” Augustine’s eyes glittered. “I’ve heard it’s become the most wretched little hive of dogma, all penitence and parables. Mind you, it’s done Fifth House tourism no end of good; we see pilgrims off your way and welcome them right back afterwards, cleansed of their sins and ready to top themselves up.” “Really?” Mercy sniffed. “I haven’t heard anything about the Fifth House at all.” “That’s a shameless lie, my child, for which I will forgive you.” “The day that you are in a position to forgive me anything, you nasty little waste of carbon—” Mercy passed Augustine a clipboard; he held out a labcoat for her to shrug into, “may we all collapse into ruin.” “Amen.” Augustine dug in his pocket for a cigarette
Mercy and Augustine pre-Lyctorhood! They argue incessantly but they're colleagues, they're professionals, they'll bicker and they're a well-oiled team. And Augustine continues to be a Fifth House snob, which is always so much fun to write.
“Ah—fuck—you’ve been busy,” John murmured—he did that, the talking, burbling to himself absent-mindedly through most activities up to and including having his cock sucked. “You’re looking for—mm—what, a good grade in sucking dick? Something that’s normal to want and possible to a-ah—”
John as someone who lives only to amuse himself is so dear to me.
“Sweet as,” John murmured
Likewise, John with all his NZ turns of phrase. One day I will fit 'chur' into a fic.
He knew which room was his, and he knew Alfred would be across the hall. Gideon snored like a planet-boring drill and the only person who’d voluntarily sleep next door to him was Titania, who could sleep through anything with complete serenity. Nigella would always select a room closest to the stairwell on the basis that she was incorrigibly nosy and wanted to hear who was coming up or downstairs with whom, and Cassy would be next door to her, albeit they’d both end up sleeping in Nigella’s room and using Cassy’s for storage.
I put serious thought into mapping this out to figure out which rooms would go where in a set of 10 rooms arranged 5 on each side but without actually adding a diagram into the fic it was impractical - nevertheless I had fun with the idea that they all know each other so well that these sorts of calculations become second- nature
“I, ah—good evening—look, sorry, I’m actually looking for—” Pyrrha raised the other eyebrow and Augustine’s mouth closed with an audible snap. She visibly appraised him—one slow, up and down sweep of her eyes that made Augustine’s cock twitch valiantly in his trousers. Then—horror of horrors—she nudged the door slightly more open in evident invitation. Augustine considered it. He really, really did. Of all the opportunities he’d been presented with over his life on this side of the Resurrection, this was one that hadn’t come along before and had been noted by its absence, and even now, knowing that it would open him up to nothing more than frustration and anguish, he gave it serious thought. “Another night?” he suggested with his most winning smile. Pyrrha snorted, flashed him an all-too-knowing grin, and closed the door in his face.
Augustine's greatest tragedy is that he never gets to make good on his crush on Pyrrha, and it was just great fun to exacerbate that in this fic
“No. Because you’re a whore.” That was no less hurtful for being true. Mercy hopped off the desk (her feet didn’t quite hit the ground when she was sitting on it, which was oddly endearing) and stalked closer
I know you're on this train with me but Mercy is 5'0", I know this to be true, I saw it in a dream
The thing was—she wasn’t wrong. There was something about her eyes on him, the weight of her attention; the physical stimulus was anything but pleasant but the context was everything, and it was all he could do not to touch himself as she manhandled him.
Likewise, Augustine being so much more interested in attention than physical stimulus.
“Your laboratory conditions leave something to be desired. But for what it’s worth, John did say it was a lovely piece of work,” he said grudgingly. Mercy scoffed, but her cheeks went a little pinker.
Teacher's pet Mercy here courtesy of flemeth's unbelievable Disco Elysium fic which burrowed its way into my brain and never came out. Also John always being in the room, even when he isn't.
Thank you for this ilu <3

2024 Trend Report (so far)
I've got an exciting lineup for you today, a curated list of home design trends that I've taken special note of.
Some of these concepts might just phase out, some might be here to stay.
My specialty up until most recently was in kitchen design so let's start with kitchens.
Chunky countertops
It's all about adding some visual heft to your kitchen and bathroom surfaces. This trend involves the use of thicker countertop surfaces to create a luxurious look. The thickness of these countertops adds visual weight and depth to the space, making them a focal point in modern kitchen designs. The look gives a sense of solidity and durability. It works with pretty much any kitchen style. You can even do a wooden chunky countertop. This countertop style features clean lines and straight finishes. Of course, the thicker the countertop, the more expensive it is. Maybe that's the idea.
There's a great kitchen island at the front window of Poggenpohl in Gastown ↓
Tumblr media
A picture I took of the display kitchen closest to the window.
Tumblr media
2. Statement island countertops
Turning the island into a focal point by incorporating dramatic stones and colors, sometimes with waterfall sides that put the slabs on full display. I have seen this done with a different countertop than the ones around in the kitchen, with a whole different grain and texture or color.
Tumblr media
3. Butler's Pantries
One time I accidentally mentioned this to a client and she was like “I love the idea, I want this”  but her kitchen space was too small to incorporate something like this and I was kicking myself for having said anything. It's basically a secondary kitchen space, like a walk-in pantry.
It's a little room attached to your kitchen that is for storage mostly. It helps minimize clutter in the main kitchen by creating space for pantry food, small appliances and extra countertop space. Sometimes there's even a smaller sink in there.
It’s like a mini kitchen/pantry space that is attached to your kitchen.
It’s really trendy to make the doors to the butler’s pantry look like the rest of the cabinets and, like a secret door that leads to this pantry space.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Now let's step outside really quick and look at a garden trend.
4. Meadow gardens
Tumblr media
People want to live large in their backyards and it seems that a trend is leaning towards a very meadow-like garden (bring in those ornamental grasses!)
Grass lawn alternatives that are more drought tolerant and don't require much watering is also growing in popularity.
The vibe is lush and natural, maybe even slightly overgrown, full of native and climate-appropriate plantings that attract wildlife and pollinators.
Tumblr media
5. Four Post Beds
Ok, to be honest I’m not crazy about this one but I’ve been seeing it more and more. I suppose I can look stylish. It’s definitely a statement piece.
The Four Post Bed features four vertical columns or poles, often made of wood or metal, that extend up from the bed frame. It combines traditional craftsmanship with modern design sensibilities.
Tumblr media
It can come with or without a canopy, depending on the look. The kind I have been seeing a lot is the open frame design, which is more airy than with a canopy on top. A bed canopy adds drama and makes a bedroom feel more cozy.I just don't like the empty 4 post bed cause I think it kinda cuts the field of view rather than having everything be more open.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
6. Color drenching (Paint)
Paint eryting. Even the trims and the ceiling. Color drenching involves saturating spaces creating a uniform room all around. Trendiest seem to be moody colors and of course neutrals. This trend encourages painting entire rooms, including walls, ceilings, and even trim. For those seeking a moody interior, deep colors can set a dramatic tone, aligning with the prevailing trend towards darker neutrals. On the other hand, for a more neutral approach, soft and subtle shades of creams or taupes can be used to achieve a serene atmosphere.
Tumblr media
Beige and gray are kinda phasing out.
Moody colors have been making their way into interiors for the last couple of years. If not on the walls then on furniture.
Plums, chocolate browns, jade greens, reddish browns, dusty tones.
Definitely some warmer wood tones.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Speaking of warm browns
7. Midcentury modern
is making kinda a comeback but in a 2020s style (often times lesser quality, mass-produced like). Midcentury furniture pieces, color palettes and architectural details.
I mean who doesn't love mid-century?
Spaces both feel nostalgic and contemporary, fits into almost any kind of lifestyle.
I think we can tribute this to creators like Paige Wassel. Her style is very mid-century and she is a major influencer in the interior design online space.
Key features of the trend are the tapered legs, statement lighting fixtures, and bold geometric patterns.
I myself am very into it.
Very sophisticated and comfortable.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
8. Silver
Interiors follow fashion. There’s this industrial Y2K aesthetic that’s really prominent in personal style and that is seeping into interiors as well.
Tumblr media
It is both sleek and grimy.
Look at this kitchen,
Tumblr media
As for pieces to add to an interior I think of the rivet series from FRAMA.
Tumblr media
Silver (like aluminum), not mirrored.
Mirrored furniture is out, that’s 2010 glam.
Tumblr media
Not only y2k but can also have a look of old silver like sterling silver. One with a darker hue underneath and that you have to polish.
Think more of like a knights armor or antique silverware with a bunch of carvings on it.
Tumblr media
9. Pictures leaning against the wall
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
A bunch of framed pictures or photos not necessarily nailed on a wall.
People are putting art Inside cupboards, on kitchen counters, on bookshelves or as in the case I’m specifying here, just leaning against a wall. Layered often times.
Mine around my house look like a bunch of frames stacked kinda waiting for something. One behind the other, all stacked against each other.
It involves arranging multiple artworks of varying sizes and styles in a casual but appealing manner.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Its a flexible way to display your art, allowing for easy rearrangement and experimentation with compositions.
-----------------------------------
These are design trends in my world and I will continue to explore, following trends, their emersion, evolution and end.

Improved Functionality: A well-designed addition can improve the layout and functionality of your home, making everyday living more efficient and enjoyable.
Enhanced Property Value: Home additions can increase the market value of your property, making it a wise financial investment.
Personalization: Adding a new space allows you to tailor your home to your specific needs and preferences, creating a more personalized living environment.
Top Home Addition Ideas in Bolton
Here are some inspiring home addition ideas to consider for your Bolton residence:
1. Expansive Kitchen Addition
The kitchen is often considered the heart of the home. Expanding your kitchen can provide more space for cooking, dining, and entertaining. Consider adding an island with seating, modern appliances, and ample storage. An open-plan design can create a seamless flow between the kitchen and living areas, making it perfect for family gatherings and social events.
2. Luxurious Master Suite
Creating a master suite addition can add a touch of luxury and privacy to your home. This space can include a spacious bedroom, a walk-in closet, and a lavish en-suite bathroom with a soaking tub, walk-in shower, and double vanity. Adding large windows or a balcony can also enhance the room with natural light and beautiful views.
3. Home Office or Study
With the rise of remote work and online learning, having a dedicated home office or study space has become increasingly important. A home office addition can provide a quiet, productive environment equipped with all the necessary amenities, such as built-in desks, shelving, and high-speed internet connections.
4. Sunroom or Conservatory
A sunroom or conservatory addition can bring the beauty of the outdoors inside. These spaces are perfect for relaxing, reading, or enjoying a cup of coffee while surrounded by natural light and greenery. With proper insulation and climate control, a sunroom can be enjoyed year-round.
5. Family Room or Great Room
Adding a family room or great room can create a versatile space for relaxation and entertainment. This addition can be designed to accommodate various activities, from watching movies and playing games to hosting parties. Consider incorporating large windows, comfortable seating, and a fireplace to make it a cozy and inviting space.
6. In-Law Suite
An in-law suite can provide a comfortable and independent living space for elderly parents, guests, or even as a potential rental unit. This addition typically includes a bedroom, bathroom, living area, and a small kitchenette. Designing it with accessibility in mind ensures it meets the needs of all occupants.
7. Garage Addition with Living Space Above
If you need additional storage and living space, consider adding a garage with a living area above. The ground floor can be used for parking and storage, while the upper floor can serve as a guest suite, rental apartment, or a private studio.
8. Outdoor Living Space
Enhancing your home with an outdoor living space, such as a deck, patio, or covered porch, can extend your living area and create an ideal spot for outdoor dining and entertainment. Consider features like an outdoor kitchen, fire pit, or hot tub to make the space more functional and enjoyable.

Sofas are no longer just for living rooms, drawing rooms, or leisure zones. Having comfortably seated themselves in your bedroom, the most valid question is, what type of bedroom sofa design should you be choosing for your interiors? Is this bed room sofa layout fashion here to stay, or will it die out? Check out these six wonderful bedroom sofa Layout interior design ideas that can be added to your bedroom area for more seating.
1. Compact Bedroom Divan Sofa Design
Make your bedroom lively and colourful with a hanging yellow divan. For smaller bedrooms, this option is a great option since it doubles as a three-seater sofa during the day and a comfortable double bed at night. For a well-rounded bedroom setup, add garage solutions and a stylish TV unit.
2. Futon that Doubles as a Bedroom Sofa
As a 2-seater couch in bedroom areas and a standalone bed for guests when they visit, futons serve a dual function in many Indian houses and apartments. You can provide a comfortable night's sleep easily if your house lacks a dedicated visitor room. Make your master bedroom more comfortable by purchasing them in pairs.
3. Modern Bedroom Sofa Design With Channel Tufted Sofa
Modern sofa designs for bedrooms are often playful and unconventional, as evidenced by pieces like the channel-tufted couch. The colourful furniture additionally serves as a dual-purpose item, serving both as a bench and as extra seating in the room. Providing a sleeping space for one character, this is a fantastic way to accommodate visitors. Make your bedroom look well-rounded and alluring by pairing it with cushions of different styles and sizes.
4. Bedroom Window Bay Seat and Daybed
A window bay seat is a must for a bedroom with a breathtaking view. Bookshelves flanking the seating area will seamlessly complement this comfortable reading nook for ebook fans. The brought bonus? A 20% extra area is provided through an underseat storage solution, making this couch design ideal for smaller bedrooms.
5. Guest Room Sleeper Sofa Design
A sleeper chair is an excellent cutting-edge bedroom couch concept to consider for your visitor room. Combining elegance and functionality, this L-shaped backrest sofa exudes class. Incorporating both fashion and luxury, it seamlessly blends into your home's aesthetic. Furthermore, this facet sofa for the bedroom can easily be the primary slumber association beyond the visitor room. By transforming from a sofa during the day to a slumbering space at night, this seating option enhances its practicality.
6. The Printed Single Sofa Chair for a Smaller Bedroom
When it comes to smaller homes, a settee chair is generally the most desired choice for bedrooms. As well as providing extra seating for those who need it, it makes great use of the space without compromising the floor space. Think about placing it in a room that includes a home office - a combination that complements the overall appeal of your house.

for Va'pak; Uzhau,
how did you get the idea for it? like it's so well thought out, in the writing style, and it feels so intelligently written, and you come out with an update pretty quick, for a fic like this. i just wanna know, like, what do you think when you're writing? oh yeah and it's a bloody fantastic fic btw
Two ideas started this fanfic:
Vulcans require mental bonds. Being without them is like sensory deprivation. Any surviving orphans would be at massively high risk for self harm or other mental health issues.
Spock and Jim in Iowa. (All elaboration redacted for spoilers.)
I wrote chapter 5 first. It built from there. My fix-it for the odd characterization choices in ST09 with Jim being a felon got added. The Vran from my other story gets a cameo. I like worldbuilding so mostly my stories build up either from "How do I explain [canon thing] and how does that explanation effect other stuff?" Example: Season 1 of TOS says Vulcan has very little free sodium salt, with what a human would consider "freshwater" oceans even if the evaporation rate would make it very mineral rich/hard water. The fannon about Vulcan food being bland to humans would therefore be because there is no salt in the seasoning, meanwhile Vulcans think human food is way too salty! Both species agree on sweets, with strawberries and cream on toast with nuts being a canon Vulcan breakfast served family style!
The other way I worldbuild is more "out of whole cloth, but color-matched to canon." My Jotenheim story is mostly this. I look at the overall framing and details and extrapolate, then build on that extrapolation until I have a complete living culture. Spock has a statue of a death god in a little meditation area of his room. Even as XO, the cabin space on a ship is at a premium. He loses almost all his storage space in the living area to have this instead. It is no great leap to say it is wildly important to him that he have this connection to his culture and religion. That alter means that much to him. Oh, he's wild, out of pocket, sassy, and indulgent at times, but he says his prayers and observes the holy days like a good boy when he's done. At least for his family, we can be sure this is a huge part of their lives... but what is that religion like? What does it say? What can I reverse engineer from canon and what can I make up to fill the voids? Then: how does that impact the story.
As for update speed and quality? Behold:
Tumblr media
Never post the last thing you have written unless it is the end. Always have at least one more drafted and some kind of outline or plan before publishing fanfic. I use Scrivener so I have a place for a synopsis for each of these "pages" and you know what? Some of them move. I've taken 5k words and shuffled them like a deck of cards in some of my drafts because after writing it all I realized the story would work better otherwise than how it was.
My first drafts are quite rough, messy grammar and dialog that perfectly fits the "he wouldn't say that" meme.
Tumblr media
I just keep on working it until it works out. I've been writing fanfiction since the late 1990's, and I do my best not to rush it.

Top 10 Japandi Decor Ideas for Living Room
Sure, here are 10 Japandi decor ideas for your living room:
1. Embrace a neutral, muted colour scheme:
Japandi interiors are known for their calming and serene atmosphere. This is largely achieved through the use of a neutral colour scheme. Think beige, cream, taupe, and light gray for walls, furniture, and rugs. You can add pops of colour with artwork, throw pillows, or accent pieces, but keep it minimal to maintain the peaceful feel.
2. Let the natural light flow in:
Natural light is a key element in Japandi design. It helps to create a feeling of spaciousness and connection to the outdoors. Make sure to maximize natural light by keeping windows uncluttered and using sheer curtains or blinds. You can also arrange furniture to avoid blocking sunlight.
3. Introduce an abundance of natural materials:
Japandi style celebrates the beauty of nature. Incorporate natural materials like wood, bamboo, rattan, cotton, linen, and wool into your living room decor. Wood furniture with clean lines, woven baskets, jute rugs, and linen throws are all great ways to bring in a touch of nature.
4. Bring in furniture with organic shapes and functionality:
Japandi furniture is known for its clean lines, simple silhouettes, and functionality. Opt for low-profile sofas, coffee tables with organic shapes, and accent chairs with curved lines. Each piece of furniture should serve a purpose and contribute to the overall harmony of the space.
5. Add interest with soft furnishings and decorative items – but keep it minimal:
While Japandi is all about minimalism, you can still add a touch of personality with soft furnishings and decorative items. Think throw pillows in different textures, a textured rug, or a woven wall hanging. However, avoid cluttering the space. Keep the number of decorative items to a minimum and choose pieces that complement the overall aesthetic.
6. Utilize additional lighting for a sense of coziness:
Just because Japandi is minimalist doesn't mean your living room should be dark. Layer your lighting to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Use overhead lighting for general illumination, table lamps for ambient light, and floor lamps for task lighting. String lights or fairy lights can also add a touch of magic.
7. Fill your space with plants and greenery:
Plants are a wonderful way to bring life and colour into your Japandi living room. They also help to purify the air and improve indoor air quality. Choose a variety of plants in different sizes and textures to add visual interest. Snake plants, fiddle leaf figs, bonsai trees, and ferns are all popular choices for Japandi interiors.
8. Declutter ruthlessly:
Decluttering is essential for achieving the clean and serene look of Japandi design. Get rid of anything that you don't need or love. Invest in storage solutions to keep clutter at bay. Having a clean and organized space will help you to relax and unwind.
9. Incorporate Japanese-inspired ceramics:
Japanese ceramics, such as vases, bowls, and teacups, can add a touch of elegance and sophistication to your Japandi living room. Look for pieces with clean lines, natural textures, and muted colours. You can display them on shelves, coffee tables, or sideboards.
10. Embrace the wabi-sabi philosophy:
Wabi-sabi is a Japanese philosophy that celebrates the beauty of imperfection. It's about finding beauty in the natural world, even in things that are flawed or impermanent. When decorating your Japandi living room, keep this philosophy in mind. Don't be afraid to embrace the natural variations in wood grain or the uneven texture of a hand-woven rug. These imperfections can add character and depth to your space.
By following these tips, you can create a Japandi living room that is both stylish and serene – a perfect place to relax and unwind.

I Think I Smell A Rat (FNAF SB fanfic) C4 - Into The Void
In Summary:
Being a robotic repair rat who lives in the walls of the pizza-plex is a pretty great gig, all things considered! You fix the wires instead of chew them, and you get into tight spaces those silly humans can't reach and fix things up behind the scenes. You do your little tasks diligently, and all is well. That is, until one night when you realize all of your other repair rat friends have gone missing, and almost all of those animatronics outside the walls are acting strange... You aren't sure what it is that needs fixing, but by golly you'll fix it! You just might need a little help along the way...
Things To Know:
Not a lot of warnings for this one! There is some peril and danger, damage to robots, and damage to. Uh, whatever the heck Afton is at this point??
Reader insert! You're a little rat shaped robot a handful of inches long. Lots of borrower-related themes in here
Daycare attendant centered, though the other animatronics make brief appearances. You hang out with Sun in the first half of the story and Moon in the second half!
A little over 17000 words in total, just a lil guy! 5 chapters, they're all pretty short
I somehow managed not to swear once in the entire story, aw hell yeah! Wait-

C4 - Into The Void
After a brief detour to a spare parts storage room and one quick casing attachment later, Moon was fully repaired and the two of you were off.
It was a surprisingly smooth ride for the most part. Moon moved just as gracefully as Sun. Although when the time came for you to fix the lights for the area ahead, Moon would snatch you up off his shoulder and plop you carelessly in front of the port. You found yourself taking your time with the light controls, not especially eager to return to his company.
Moon didn't seem especially eager to get chummy with you either. The journey was mostly silent, until you ran into trouble about halfway there.
Chica hadn't seen you and Moon yet. She seemed to be busy violently attacking some apparently offensive trash cans. She was unfortunately standing right in front of the hallway you and Moon needed to go down. Moon retraced his steps back around the corner and crouched down to conspire with you.
"I think I can take her," Moon whispered.
"No, that's a bad idea." You quickly shook your head. "You'll get damaged again."
Moon scoffed. "You think I'd loose??"
"I think it would be a bad idea to risk it. We don't have time to repair you again," you argued.
"Do you have a better idea, then?"
You nodded. "If you prop open that staff room door, I'll make a distraction and draw Chica's attention. When she goes into the room to investigate, you sneak past. When she looses interest, I'll sneak by and meet you at the end of the hall."
Moon paused. "…That is actually a good idea," he grumbled.
You would have smiled, if you could. Perhaps even gloated a bit, if you had the time. Alas, there was no time for such things. You only had about two hours left until 6AM, when the building would open to the unsuspecting human staff looking to get ready for the day.
Moon carried you into the staff room. A break room, by the looks of it. A recharge station for humans, to your understanding. There were plenty of items up on a long counter across the room from the door, so you had Moon drop you off there. He left the room, leaving the door open behind him.
You nudged a wide tin full of plastic silverware towards the edge of the counter, then paused. You realized you'd need a place to hide after you'd made your distraction. Not only that, but you'd have to get back down to the floor without Moon's help. You could worry about that after Chica had left the room, though. First, a hiding place…
There were a few boxes and containers you weren't very confidant about here on the counter. There was also a coffee machine, and next to it… ah ha! A wicker basket full of sugar and powdered creamer packets. You could dive in there and be totally hidden.
With a plan in mind, you confidently turned back to the tin of plastic silverware. You set your two front paws against it and pushed it over the edge of the counter. You were already running for the basket before it even hit the floor.
The tin clattered loudly, and the silverware spilled out everywhere. You peeked through the little gaps in the side of the wicker basket just in time to see Chica stalk into the room to investigate.
Chica swiveled her head around, studying the room. Through the open doorway behind her, you could see Moon creeping silently and slowly past. Chica straightened up. She seemed satisfied that nothing was amiss, and she was starting to turn back around…
No no no, not yet! Moon was right behind her! You panicked and leapt out of the basket, packets of sugar and creamer flying across the counter. You were flashing your tail light, though the motion was already enough. Chica's gaze fixed right on you.
The real panic set in as Chica started lurching towards you. You had no easy way off the counter, and you couldn't hide. You dashed across the counter, thinking you'd improvise along the way.
Chica made a grab for you and missed, her faux feathered arm whooshing just behind you and swatting a box of crackers off the counter instead. You focused on one of the closest tables as you rapidly approached the end of the counter. There was no time to calculate if you could make the jump or not, Chica was swiping at you again. You reached the end of the line, and pushed off the edge of the counter as hard as your little joints would allow.
For a moment, it really looked like you'd make it. The table was approaching… and then you were arcing downwards sooner than you'd hoped, and the edge of the table flew overhead, and you fell straight towards the hard tile floor at top speed.
There was a hard metallic sound, and suddenly you were no longer falling. To your confusion, you hadn't hit the floor. You had just registered the metal fingers around you before the world was rushing by again, this time in the opposite direction as you were lifted quickly upwards.
Moon smoothly ducked as Chica made a hard swipe for his head. With his free hand, Moon shoved Chica back. She was already off balance, and fell backwards onto a different table. It collapsed under her weight, splitting clean in half. Moon ran for it as Chica struggled to pull herself back up.
Moon pulled the door closed behind him and sprinted down the hall, holding you tightly and close to his chest.
"I told you I could take her," Moon said smugly.
You poked your tail out from between his fingers to argue. "My plan would have worked! If only she'd taken a few moments longer to look around."
Moon suddenly skidded to a halt as he reached a door. He stood to the side and cautiously hit the controls. The lights were on in the hall beyond; you'd been through this hall earlier with Sun.
"Crap. Be quick," Moon said, already lowering you towards the ground.
Without a word you leapt from his hand and dashed into the walls. You made it to the light controls in record time, undoing your work from earlier and returning the lights to their proper setting. Instead of leaving the walls, you went to the door controls next. When you didn't see signals shooting back and forth from either control panel, you took that as a good sign that Chica hadn't caught up to Moon, and made your way back out of the walls.
Moon was already on the other side, his hand hovering over the controls in case Chica tried to follow him.
"…Do you think she lost interest as soon as we were out of sight?" Moon asked cautiously.
"The other bots did seem to forget about Sun pretty quickly anytime we got out of sight of them," you remembered. "I think we're probably okay now."
Moon sighed and relaxed. He bent down to scoop you up, then cast one last look at the door before hurrying off down the hall.
You felt Moon's hands shift under you, tilting you slightly. You looked up at Moon, realizing he was looking you over. Moon quickly snapped his face plate back up, focusing on where he was going instead.
You swung your tail around, making sure Moon could still see the light. "Thanks for saving me back there, by the way."
"Yeah, yeah. If you get decommissioned then there'll be no one left who can help Sun. That's all," Moon insisted.
     "Sure," you said.
Moon made a grumbling noise. "I wasn't just going to leave you to face Chica by yourself! You're so puny, even if you had made that jump, she would have crushed you."
     "Right."
"Shut up! Stop looking at me like that or I'm stuffing you in my pocket," Moon threatened.
You were not dissuaded in the slightest. "I think you're not as rough and tough as you like to seem after all!"
"In the pocket with you, tiny terror!" Moon huffed and made good on his threat of stuffing you in his pocket.
You wiggled in the dark space for a moment until you were able to get your paws under you. You poked your head up out of the pocket, but with all the stomping Moon was doing, watching the world rush by was a little disorienting. You accepted your pocket fate, which actually wasn't too bad. It was dark and cozy in the pocket, like your charging nest. If only you could actually charge in here; your battery was starting to get a little too low for comfort.
You got bored of the pocket after a while and finally climbed out. You grabbed hold of Moon's capelet, the pointed ends dangling just low enough for you to use to climb your way back up to his shoulder. You decided against teasing Moon any further, at least for now.
"We're close to your pathway now," Moon said.
You and Moon had made it to Rockstar Row. You hadn't been here with Sun, so the lights were already off. Moon strode past darkened display cases and old framed posters, artifacts from long closed locations. Moon briefly eyed a weathered old metal hook in a smaller case. You wondered if the older buildings also had rats like you and your friends looking after them.
Moon came to a stop in front of a small stage near the end of the hall, past the rope lines leading into the animatronic's rooms. There was a sign set in front of the stage, reading 'Coming Soon; the iconic pair that started it all! Freddy Fazbear and Bonnie Bunny currently under renovations'.
You could see your port, in the base of the wall at the back of the stage. You could not see any sort of door near it that Moon would be able to fit through.
"Hmm." Moon ignored the sign and the lackluster rope fence in front of the stage and climbed up onto the wood platform. He investigated the curtains and tapped at the wall, then kicked at the floor. "Any ideas?"
You brought up your mental map. You could see where the map ended right below Moon's feet. Your sparse self-mapped paths wound downwards, circling the exact circumference of the stage.
"…Stomp on the floor," you told Moon.
Moon did as you asked and stomped a foot on the wooden boards of the stage. The sound echoed, as if the space underneath was hollow. You and Moon reached the same conclusion at the same time.
"There's nothing below the stage! I can get down through here," Moon said excitedly. He plucked you off of his shoulder and set you down on the stage. "Wait here." He jumped back down to the floor and dashed around the corner, out of sight.
A moment later, you jumped at the sound of glass shattering. Moon returned with an old metal hook in hand and a mischievous pep in his step.
You shook your head and resolved to make Moon put the hook back once this was all over. You watched him use the hook to pry between the boards and wrench them up far enough for him to wiggle his fingers under them and pry them up. He tossed the boards aside, and in a matter of moments had torn a decent sized hole in the stage.
A damp, cold air wafted up from the darkness below. You shared a look with Moon.
"Well. No turning back now, little rat." Moon offered a hand out to you.
You glanced back at the hole. Your map told you the empty space below didn't exist, despite your eyes stating otherwise. You felt uncomfortable just looking at it. You realized this must be what humans felt like when they were faced with dark places. For you, the dark was usually friendly, safe. You were built to see and navigate in the dark. This darkness however, was much different. You couldn't see in this darkness. It was dauntingly unknowable, shapeless and unfamiliar. You wouldn't be able to figure out where you were going, and you wouldn't be able to easily escape.
You thought about Sun, and all the other rats. Your hardworking friends, still missing somewhere, probably suffering from the virus like all the other bots. You could do this. You had to.
You climbed up onto Moon's hand and gave him a nod.
Moon crouched at the edge of the hole. "Right. Here we go."
He jumped through the hole, holding you securely in his hands, and together the two of you plummeted down into the darkness.
Moon landed smoothly on his feet and straightened up. You both took a look around.
Trusting your eyes alone was strange and disconcerting. Your map was entirely useless, and your pathfinding wouldn't even send you warning pings. You couldn't make any sense of the paths you'd made previously, couldn't even be sure they were at all accurate.
Trying to focus on the space was difficult, and it felt like something important was missing, or like you were malfunctioning. You thought about playing I-Spy with Sun, when you had studied the world around you from his hand, without your pathfinder program working properly. Using just your eyes, you started to process what you could.
You and Moon were in a kitchen. It was by no means functional. There was rubble everywhere, missing equipment, and strange puddles and stains. The cracked checker tile floor was weathered and warped, and you thought that this place must have been down here for ages, well before the plex was built.
"Who decided to build on top of this dump?" Moon mumbled. He picked his way carefully across the kitchen, eying the puddles disdainfully.
     "How's your pathfinding?" you asked.
"There's a few snags. My map keeps trying to tell me this place doesn't exist, but the pathfinding seems to be working well enough."
"My map won't even work anymore. I can't even tell what direction we're facing."
"Hm." Moon gave your head a sympathetic pat with a finger. "My whole system probably works a lot differently than yours."
The kitchen doors groaned miserably as Moon pushed them open. Here, you were too far from the faint light trailing down from the hole Moon had come through, now in total darkness. Red lights clicked on in Moon's eyes and swept over the room, casting just enough light for both of you to see by.
The dining area was in a similar state of decay to the kitchen. Only a few tables and chairs remained, though the wood was rotting and heavily warped. There were a few doors set into the walls. Moon made his way to the nearest one.
You checked your internal clock as Moon explored. There was about an hour left until 6. You were trying not to worry, but this place had you feeling all sorts of stressed.
The old restaurant was quiet and musty. The only sound was Moon's shoes over the floor and the quiet clicking of his joints as he walked. You didn't move much yourself, choosing to focus more on the constant of Moon's hand below you.
You had no idea where you'd come from or what direction you were going. You couldn't remember a turn even a moment after Moon had made one. The turn did not exist, because this whole place did not exist. Your map was resolute on that front. Dingy walls and sparse peeling wallpaper passed by in a blur beyond Moon's fingers.
"Not too much left to explore down here. We haven't run into that computer console yet. If my map would behave, I could at least see what direction it's in," Moon grumbled.
A few minutes later, Moon came to a stop in front of a door. There was a small plaque still clinging to the wood surface of the door, reading 'Main Office'. He tried the handle, but it appeared to be locked.
"Uh oh. Maybe there's a key around here somewhere?" you wondered.
"I have a key," Moon assured.
You found his tone suspicious. Before you could say anything else, Moon gripped the doorknob and ripped it clean out of the wood of the door, sending chunks of wood scattering across the floor. Moon tossed the doorknob over his shoulder.
"…Well. Not the most traditional key, but it did get the door open," you remarked.
Moon chuckled and pushed the door open, stepping inside the office.
You were both speechless at the scene you found yourselves in.
At the other side of the room, beyond a few rusty foldout tables, was the computer console you'd been looking for. When you scanned it, the ID matched the one you'd found earlier in the update files. It was connected to something clearly not human, but the bot had no ID at all. It seemed to be missing quite a lot of parts and casing, instead full of an unidentifiable purple colored substance. The stuff looked leathery in some places, wet in others. The bot should not have by any means been active, but he looked up at you and Moon none the less. You thought he might have been a rabbit model, once.
Your attention wasn't on the weird bot, though. You were looking down at the ground, because the floor was covered in rats. Nearly a hundred little repair rats, metal casing dingy and scuffed from navigating this place. Your friends were clearly having trouble, bumping into rubble and the walls and other rats. A few of them were carrying small parts, slowly but diligently making their way to the bot sitting on the other side of the room, made of old scraps and spare parts and the work of a hundred diligent little repair rats.
"Ah. So that's where all your friends went," Moon said. "They've been repairing… that." He tried to step carefully, but the rats didn't seem to understand enough of what was going on to know to move out of the way. Before he could even take a full step, the bot spoke.
"I don't know how you've found your way here," he snarled, his voice raspy and faintly doubled by a voice box struggling to push out static, "but I'd take a good look around. Because it's the last place you'll ever see."
You could tell Moon was ready to retort with some snarky reply, but before he could get a word out, the bot across the room raised a finger, pointed right at Moon, and spoke one word as the heads of every single rat in the room other than you turned to focus on Moon.
     "Disassemble."

Liminal Void/Valiant Horizon double header update
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hi there! Been awhile since I checked in about either of these.
Liminal Void
Since my last update I've proceeded to make a ton of ships (18 total). Mostly they're a stack of Integrity/Armor, a unique trait for each (like cargo ships always have extra cargo/storage/etc space, naval ships have integrated weaponry or are better with it, etc), a room loadout, and some Hardpoint tools/weapons.
Room loadouts are functional things like storage, medical bays, etc but they're also more standard stuff: where do people sleep? How good of a galley do you have? Is your head a broom closet or can you take an actual shower in there? Things like that.
These are super important because I'm thinking about not only functional stuff but how awful it is to live on a ship that's built solely for function. Unless you're living in the lap of luxury as far as your loadout, it's guaranteed to be worse than any living conditions you can find not on a ship. Maybe that's fine if you mostly expect to be getting rooms while in ports though! Decisions, decisions.
They also tell a story about what kind of crews typically run the ship: For example, for the Ore Hauler, there's a few nice bedrooms for officers and a bunch of awful, crowded bunks for the proles, because there's an expected hierarchical relationship between overseers and workers; but for the Brawler (a close-range gunship), it's tiny to fit more weaponry and only has one bunk with a tiny head, because it's not expected to be stayed in for too long and is expected to always have someone at the helm.
Likewise with Hardpoints. For example, unlike all other civilian craft, the Ship Carrier has weaponry because it carries other ships: it's a prime target for hijacking. Others have things like work platforms, external quarantine storage, and asteroid anchors, some of which can also be used in combat to awkward, but great effect.
Rooms are by "segment", which I'm thinking of as roughly a 15 cubic meter space. Multiple-segment rooms have an amplified effect, but take up more space on the ship - and if it gets hit, all segments of the room are probably damaged or ruined.
I also added rules for how to do stuff with them. It largely follows the Total//Effect Clashes and Dueling idea but I've made a few key distinctions here:
A lot of "combats" aren't really going to be combat as such, especially if you have a civilian ship. Mostly you just want to get out unharmed. Being in space combat is a really bad, expensive idea! And sometimes there's nothing to fight as such, there's just a big asteroid field trying to tear apart your ship. So there's some rules, mostly leveraging progress/resistance and threat/tension for that kind of thing.
I'm going with Integrity/Armor: Armor's cheap to fix and acts as ablative HP to Integrity's Real Shit HP. Much like personal injury, if you take Harm to Integrity, you're rolling to see if something really bad happens.
I also added ~The Economy~, the long-awaited rules for how to buy, sell, restock, etc. I'm following a lot of the SRD's Income and Expenditures but I'm introducing a few concepts that I'm probably going to back-port. The general vibe is:
Currency is Credits or Scrip. You can spend credits anywhere, you can only spend scrip at company stores. (Or you can exchange for credits, but it's rarely 1:1.)
Each thing you're getting/giving has a set Magnitude (representing what ballpark of price it's in) that's 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, and so on. (Values chosen for easy multiplication: most people can multiply by 2's, 5's, or 10's and it's all variations on that.)
But that Magnitude is multiplied by a Value: this one's a die roll depending on how much the buyer/seller values it, scarcity, negotiation tactics, etc. (Standard Total//Effect Low/Mid/High, except on the low end instead of Low - 1 potentially going down to 0, it bumps Magnitude down a step.)
Likewise with expenditures like fuel, food/water, repairs, etc., each has a value that's determined on purchase. Certain facilities on your ship can make this easier/cheaper or negate it.
If you can't pay for, or don't want to pay for, an expenditure, you can Risk It: this gives a chance every time the neglected thing's stressed to have it fail at the absolute worst time. (Like if you Risk It with fuel, well, I hope you're packing a distress beacon.)
I'm working on debt next but it's likely going to be like: you put down your ship as collateral for a loan, you have to pay interest every time you resupply (a portion of the load depending on how good a deal you got), if you can't or don't pay you might get a repo man after you.
I also wrote up some of the setting, specifically the three poles:
Earth's where it all started but it's kind of old and busted compared to the old days. It's still the breadbasket of the galaxy, so there's some life in it; but for the most part, it's very hard to live there unless you're already rich, having an atmosphere is a prized commodity.
Mars is where most of the galaxy's metal/hydrocarbon mining happens (as penal labor, largely). It's also where most of the shipyards are.
Ganymede was founded by techies and focuses hard on high-tech stuff and experimental working. They're also the ones most interested in pushing the limits of the known universe further out, but their corporations met stiff challenges from inhospitable regions, mysterious occurrences, and the desire of those out on the frontier to break free.
I wrote a few scattered things for these: a page of description each and a handful of plot hooks. This is about the level of setting I'm aiming for, but I'll add a few more categories later.
Valiant Horizon
On a less grim note than space capitalism, Valiant Horizon's mostly in "flesh out the soft stuff" mode - the main mechanics are basically done so it's mostly a matter of that and refinement. Specifically, I recently tackled Heroes/Classes as a concept.
The idea behind each Class is that characters in this setting were bonded with hero-containing Crystals. Classes are just the archetypes of these heroes. As part of the game, when you level up and when you meet new characters/heroes in the same position, you flesh out the story of that hero: starting with an In Media Res moment in their life, and adding more as you level up. You can learn up to 6 things about a Hero: this takes you through the 1st Tier (Fledgling, levels 1-3) and 2nd Tier (Famous, levels 4-6). At Renowed Tier (7-9), you're focusing on making a legend of your own.1 This has a multi-fold effect: not only are you describing the person in your character's head, you're creating the setting through anecdotes (which I love to do, see ANOINTED) and defining your character better in the process (as there's meant to be some kind of special affinity between the two: in defining the hero's life, it's also reflecting on their bonded character.)
So that's those! Major progress being made. (And I got an artist for Valiant Horizon. Hopefully more on that soon!)
I haven't written this fully in yet but at Level 10, the pinnacle at Heroic Tier, you perform the final thing that seals your legend: you come up with a Class based on your exploits that survives to the next game, and your character is now a Hero for someone in the future. ↩︎
