People always ask me why I love Prince so much. There are a lot of reasons, but I have to honestly say it is largely because of the music my parents raised me on. While we were a MJ family, P perfectly carries forward the musicians and style of the artists of their time and made it modern. I've been making Prince mixes for a while and made one for the long weekend...it's Prince singing music my parents grew up with and played around the house for us all the time. It was emotionally a lot to hear him singing these songs together both as a reminder that he's their age more or less (a bit younger) and as a reminder he was always about REAL music by REAL musicians. You can hear that influence in all of his work and I love love love that so much!
This is a tool for those of us who have parents or friends around his age...and they side eye you about him. Play them this and if they still question why your love is so deep, there’s just no hope for them lol!
Start Me Up (Rolling Stones) The Way You Do the Things You Do (The Temptations) Living for the City (Stevie Wonder) Love Changes (Mother's Finest) The Sun's Gonna Shine Again (Ray Charles) People Get Ready (The Impressions) Summer Madness/In the Morning (Kool and the Gang/Ledisi) Sunshine of Your Love (Cream) I Want You Back (Jackson 5) I Got The Feelin (James Brown) Use Me (Bill Withers) Come Together (The Beatles) One in A Million You (Larry Graham) Can't Hide Love (Earth Wind & Fire) Ain't No Sunshine (Bill Withers) Who's Loving You (The Miracles) What a Wonderful World (Louis Armstrong)

Lots of turmoil over recent announcements re New Power Soul. In response to that, a concept, what if the project was comprised of “purple instrumentals” a la Madhouse 24 from the 90’s? Some original songs, some covers of P’s songs, some covers of others’ songs, but all with the arrangements Prince facilitated…and with the very same musicians he was working with. They could even have multiple volumes for such a project, cycling out band members to cover live instrumental arrangements from the eras…and include anecdotes about working with P on each volume! Something to consider! Real music by real musicians…performed by the same musicians in the way the Professor himself arranged for live performances! This is what it could feel like!
Minneapolis #1 - Anthology Space - Madhouse 24 Damn U - Wow NPG on the Creation of Love 2 the 9’s - Act I TV Special Strays of the World - Best of 3rdEyeTV Never Too Much - Welcome 2 Chicago (Got 2) Give it Up - Madhouse 24 Around the World in a Day - Wow| Holy River - The Work Vol 7 NPG on how songs get made - Act I TV Special Eye Hate U - Eye Hate U 12" Shades of Umber - Montreux 2013

Just as a reminder, I make P “mixtapes”! They are a combination of unreleased, released, live versions, and interview snippets to create a theme. I used to do 4play4themind things on Tidal a while back, but I know not everyone has a subscription there...another option to spread the news about the Professor!

Have a listen once you’re done reading. He was telling their story through the music the whole time. Almost can't hear his 90's work (and a little bit after) the same way. What a diary right under our noses!

Made this the other day for someone curious about P’s guitar skills. Last question was timely because the song I mentioned is included here!

We know the standard proteges and collaborators like Sheila E, Vanity 6, Jill Jones, and others, but what about ladies who came after them or before them? A musicology exercise on other purple proteges.
