Would you ever write… the "and there was only one bed" trope?

46 Years of Zanjeer. (11/05/1973).

Zanjeer is a crime action film, written by Salim-Javed, directed and produced by Prakash Mehra, and starring Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Pran, Ajit, and Bindu.

The film changed Hindi cinema's trend from romance films to crime action films, and pioneered Bachchan's new image of a brooding but explosive person who fights back when cornered, known as "The Angry Young Man."

The film started a new wave in Bollywood. At a time when India was suffering from corruption and low economic growth, and the common man was left with frustration and anger over the system, Zanjeer began shifting Hindi cinema in a violent and aggressive direction. Reflecting the anger of the masses, Amitabh Bachchan was seen as the new hero, who had the courage to fight against the wrongs while maintaining moral values at the same time. This film also ended the struggling period for Bachchan and turned him into a rising star. The film was a blockbuster success, domestically in India and overseas in the Soviet Union.

It was the first of many collaborations between screenwriter duo Salim-Javed and Amitabh Bachchan. Ever since Zanjeer, Salim-Javed wrote many of their subsequent scripts with Bachchan in mind for the lead role, and insisted on him being cast for their later films, including blockbusters such as Deewaar (1975) and Sholay (1975), establishing Bachchan as a superstar.

Zanjeer remains an important film in the history of Indian cinema and is regarded as a classic today.

Decoding MEGASTAR Amitabh Bachchan: 11 Blockbusters, 11 Super Hits, 24 Hits & Counting

To put things to perspective, the success ratio of Amitabh Bachchan is 59%, despite having acted in almost 150 films.

Since his debut in 1969 with Saat Hindustani, Bollywood Megastar Amitabh Bachchan has acted in approximately 146 films and is soon racing towards becoming one of those rare main stream superstars who has acted in 150 Bollywood films. In his career spanning for around 40 years, Bachchan has been a part of 46 Hit films and around 40 average grossers i.e. film where producers broke even and made minor profits.

To put things to perspective, the success ratio of Amitabh Bachchan is 59%, despite having acted in almost 150 films. An interesting point to note here is that, since his debut Amitabh Bachchan has had one release every year except 1970, 1987, 1993, 1995, and 1996, which means, he has had a release in 34 years out of his 39-year working career.

We have often read about the craze of Amitabh Bachchan, but a glance at the kind of success his films witnessed at the peak of his career just goes on to prove that he is indeed the biggest superstar that Bollywood has seen till date. Popularly known as Angry Young Man, Amitabh Bachchan’s first hit movie was Anand in 1971, however that was a multi-starrer with Rajesh Khanna in lead. The film, which established Amitabh Bachchan as a star to look out for in the industry was Zanjeer (1973), which was his first collaboration with the iconic writer duo of Salim – Javed. Ironically, he wasn’t the first choice for the character of Inspector Vijay.

The film was first offered to Dharmendra, who didn’t due to the film due to personal differences with the director. After his exit, the script went to Dilip Kumar and Dev Anand, and both were not quite impressed with the script. It seems as if Bachchan was destined to do the film and make the character of Vijay his own. While director Prakash Mehra was skeptical to sign Bachchan for the film, it was writer duo Salim-Javed and actor, Pran who convinced him get Big B on the board and the rest is history.

After Zanjeer, Amitabh Bachchan started delivering a streak of hit films in the form of Abhimaan, Namak Haram, Benaam, Roti Kapda Aur Makaan, Majboor to name a few. While the above-mentioned films established Bachchan as a star, it was Deewar, which took his stardom to another level.

Just like Zanjeer, Amitabh Bachchan wasn’t the first choice for Deewar as well as director, Yash Chopra wanted to cast Rajesh Khanna for the film. However, the Salim-Javed yet again convinced the director to sign Bachchan for the film. As Vijay Verma, Amitabh Bachchan delivered one of the best performances of his career, and the film further strengthened the tag allotted to him i.e. Angry Young Man.

Deewar was followed by a few other successful films like Chupke Chupke, Sholay, Kabhi Kabhie, Adaalat, Hera Pheri, Amar Akbar Anthony, Trishul, Don and Mukkadar Ka Sikandar. By the end of decade (1970 – 1979), Bachchan had reached the pinnacle of stardom.

Such was the craze of Amitabh Bachchan that renowned book publishers, India Book House Pvt. Ltd. with the consent of Amitabh Bachchan came up with a comic series called The Adventures of Amitabh Bachchan in which the actor featured as himself i.e. a superstar, who had the ability to morph into superhero supremo, whenever a serious crime was committed in the city. The comic book had a new issue every month and Big B used to personally sign the first page of every copy as a part of memento. After a successful run for two years, the magazine for discontinued for reasons best known to the publishers.

Amitabh Bachchan’s success streak, which started with Anand in 1971 lasted till Hum, which released in 1991. Although Bachchan slowed down in terms of hits after the release of Mard in 1985, his films still opened to bumper response at the ticket window and it was the content which didn’t support the film in long run. Bachchan started his second innings at the Box-Office with Bade Miyan Chote Miyan in 1998, following which he started playing characters closer to his age. From 1998 till 2018, Bachchan has been a part of ensemble films. Although his stardom took a backseat in the second innings of the career, the sheer presence of the superstar in any ensemble cast escalates the excitement around the film.

Three generations of a high-profile Bollywood family have tested positive for Covid-19, officials in the Indian state of Maharashtra say.

Results on Sunday showed the actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, a former Miss World, and her daughter Aaradhya, eight, were infected with coronavirus.

Her husband Abhishek and father-in-law Amitabh, both also actors, were taken to hospital on Saturday with the virus.

Both men were said to have mild symptoms.

Abhishek Bachchan tweeted that they would remain in hospital “till the doctors decide otherwise”.

Aishwarya Bachchan, 46, is one of Bollywood’s most famous faces both in India and abroad, featuring in several Bollywood and Hollywood films.

She won the Miss World pageant in 1994 and is Goodwill Ambassador for UNAIDS. In 2003 she was the first Indian actress to be a jury member at the Cannes Film Festival.

Aishwarya and her daughter are said to be asymptomatic. Her husband tweeted to say they would be self-isolating at home.

Outpouring of support

On Saturday Amitabh Bachchan told his millions of Twitter followers he had tested positive for Covid-19.

“I have tested Covid positive, shifted to hospital, hospital informing authorities, family and staff undergone tests, results awaited,” he wrote.

Bachchan, 77, has been involved in 200 films over five decades.

He and Abhishek, 44, were taken to Nanavati Hospital in Mumbai on Saturday. Abhishek described them both as having mild symptoms.

Amitabh is currently in the isolation unit of the hospital, news agency ANI reported, quoting a public relations officer for the hospital. He urged anyone who had been close to him in the past 10 days to get tested.

His wife Jaya had tested negative, officials said. It was not clear whether results for other family members were yet in.

Mumbai municipal officials have since put up banners outside the actor’s house in the city, classifying it as a “containment zone”.

The news has led to an outpouring of support for the family on social media. Among those paying their respects were actress Sonam K Ahuja and former India cricket player Irfan Pathan.

Bachchan Snr has enjoyed starring roles in hit movies such as Zanjeer and Sholay. Since rising to fame in the 1970s, he has won numerous accolades including four National Film Awards and 15 Filmfare Awards. France has also bestowed its highest civilian award, the Legion of Honour, for his contribution to cinema.

Outside acting, Bachchan Snr had a brief stint in politics and was elected as a member of India’s parliament in 1984 at the behest of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. But he resigned three years later, disillusioned by a corruption scandal under Mr Gandhi’s government.

In recent months, he has been prominent in helping the government get its message across in the fight against coronavirus.

India saw a record rise in the number of coronavirus cases by 27,100 on Sunday, with the total climbing to nearly 850,000 – the third highest caseload in the world. There have been complaints about a lack of both testing and frontline medical staff.

Remembering Mac Mohan, one of Hindi cinema's famed character actors, on his 7th death anniversary.

Born as Mohan Makhijaney in Karachi, Macmohan's roots as an actor were in the theater. He forayed into the film industry as an assistant to Chetan Anand following which he made his debut in the 1964 film "Haqeeqat". He acted in nearly 200 films in a career spanning 46 years. The actor, who was mostly a part of the villain's gang in the films that he worked, played the bad guy despite not having a physique that could look intimidating on screen. He shot to fame as the gun-toting dacoit Sambha in "Sholay". He was also part of several blockbusters with Amitabh Bachchan like "Zanjeer", "Don", "Majboor", "Satte Pe Satta", "Shaan", "Dostana", "Khoon Pasina", "Kaala Patthar", and "Hera Pheri". According to Ramesh Sippy, Sambha's role immortalized Mac Mohan. "No one could have suited Sambha's role better than Mac Mohan. He will be always remembered by that role." Amjad Khan's (Gabbar Singh) conversation with Mac Mohan, sitting on a hilltop, are among the most favourite dialogues from the film. When asked by Gabbar, "Arrey o Sambha, kitna inaam rakhe hain sarkar hum par?" #356 2nd ODI brought nostalgic memories of Yuvi-Dhoni just like Sholay JAI-VIRU  combination; Morgan played a blinder but Ashwin's class and Bhuvi's exceptional death bowling gives Kohli his first series win as ODI captain; Smith and co outsmart Pakistan to go ahead in series; World Number 117 and wildard of this Australian open Istomin stuns Djokovic in 348 min 5 set thriller; Nadal is back at his best as he thrashes Baghdatis; Radwanska crashes out of Australian open and more...:-)

Djokovic who had thrashed Verdasco in first round realized how tough the match would be right in the first game which lasted for whole of 15 minutes. Djokovic finally held the game. Almost all games in first set went to deuce. It eventually went to tie breaker. Nobody expected Istomin to be this competitive. He has just 1top ten player in 33 instances. He had hardly reached QF of any slam. Here he was matching Djokovic point for point. Djokovic had 2 set points but couldnt convert. Istomin finally won 10-8 and punched his hand in the air. Djokovic upped his ante in 2nd set. Break of serve was exchanged twiice. Istomin had 2 set points when Djokovic was serving at 4-5 but defending champion saved with big serves. He broke Istomin next and went onto win the set 7-5. 3rd set was all Djokovic as he easily won 6-2. It looked like energy of Istomin has finally soaked in. But fun was just about to start. He went for winners in 4th set. His first serve improved. Istomin broke Djokovic but was broken back immediately. This set also went to tie breaker. Just like in first set, Istomin found the range in tie breaker. Djokovic took mini break 3-2 lead. But Istomin broke in point his points to takle 4-3 which became 6-3 later. Djokovic saved 3 set points but Istomin’s serve rescued to make the match even. Djokovic had played more 5 setters than Istomin and had the edge but what transpired shocked the crowd. In the whole set, Istomin did not face a single break point. He broke Djokovic in 7th game. He went onto win 6-4 and knock defending champion oiutside the championship. Last time Djokovic played 5 setter in 2nd round of a slam was in 2007. Just goes to show that Djokovic is a bit tired and jaded. French open win has taken a lot out of him. Its not the first time this has happened to players. Nadal found it tough to wiin slams after winning 12th. He just managed to 2 after that and struggling now. Federer also found it tough post winning French open. Djokovic had chance to close first set in his serve in tie breaker. That point would haunt him. He woould have won in straight sets had he won that. Match lasted 348 minutes but that point held the key for Istomins win.

In other matches, 3rd seeded Radwanksa was knocked out in straight sets by Lucic Baroni. Raonic was impressive in straight sets win over Muller. Konta, Wozniacki ,Serena, Gasquet and Zverev cruised through in straight sets. Monfils and Dimitrov was tested but came through in 4 sets.Nadal who is on a comeback trail after injury continued his impressive run as he thrashed Baghdatis in straight sets. Baghdatis just won 7 games. Nnadal means business in this years Australian open. How long can he go. He would face future of tennis Zverev in 3rd round. If he wins that 4th round match probably with Monfils is on the cards.

England won the toss and elected to bowl straight away. As in first ODI, bowlers made impact on Inidan batsman straight away. Woakes dismissed rahul of his 2nd over first ball. It was a beautiful delivery and STokes caught a good catch in slips. Kohli came to roars from th crowd. Roars increased as he scored 2 supreme quality on drives. But in very same over of Woakes, kohli chased a wide yorker and Stokes caught a stupendous catch. Dhawan was dropped by Woakes in his next over but wasted his oppurtunity as he chased a delivery without moving his feet and was castled. His dreadful form continued. Just like in first match India were in trouble again at 25-3. No kohli to save this time either. But what transpired later was a joy to watch. Dhoni and Yuvi last a huge contribution in 2011 world cup finals. They took their time initially. Dhoni struggled to pull the balls early. But Yuvi was right in his zone early. He was creaming fours and sixes at will. Some of his shots were majestic to see. This was some comeback by Yuvi. He reached his 14th century and then continued his dream knock. Dhoni became aggressive post his 50. He also reached his hundfred. It had been 70 months since last Yuvi scored his last hundred and 49 months since Dhoni hit his last hundred. It was like watching a old blockbuster movie again. Batting was all class. They had 256 stand which was best 4th partnership stand against England for India. Yuvi got out to 150 of which 100 came of boundaries and sixes alone. Majestic stuff. Dhoni then went for shots. He along with cameos from Jadhav, Pandey and Jadeja ensured India reached 381. 120 runs were scored of last 10 overs and 73 of last 5. If ENgland does not lose too many wickets early, they still would have chances as Cuttack would have lots of dew. Hales and Roy started well but Bumrah dismissed Hales in 4th over. Roy and Root did what they did in first ODI. Milked runs and kept run rate at 6-7. Bhuvi’s first spell was fantastic as he just gave 23 of 5 overs. Ashwin and Jadeja had to come to party to get India back in the match after Root-Roy’s 100 hundred run stand. Ashwin did the trick as he dismissed Roy in his fiirst over. He started with traditional over the wicket strategy rather than negative bowling in first ODI. Roy and Morgan then continued the good work. Against the run of play, Jadeja castled Roy. Roy looked for 150 just like Yuvi did but was not to be. He should have scored 2 hundreds in this series but missed both. Same goeos with Root. Post that Ashwin dismissed Stokes and Butler to give India a stronghold. 176 was needed of 110 balls when Moen joined Morgan. Moeen started finding his touch right away. They kept Hitting odd boundaries and kept required run rate under 12. 113 was needed of last 10 overs. Bhyvi came and hardly gave any room. But England made runs from the other end. Jadeja dropped a sitter of Moeen. But a couple overs later, Bhuvi castled him with a slower delivery. Bumrah did the same to Woakes in next over. Plunkett hit a couple of boundaries to push England ahead. Morgan is very dangerous in this situation and he smashed a six of Bumrah as well. Plunkett was given out LBW of Bumrah but 3rd umpire overturned the decision. He immediately hit boundaries of next 2 balls to reduce the margin to 46 of last 3 overs. Morgan scored a couple of boundaries to bring it down to 33 from 2 overs. Great effort from England. Morgan scored a boundary of first ball of penultimate over to bring up century in 81 balls. But what happened next ended England hopes. Plunkett hit Bumrah back to him. Morgan had backed out and was Bumrah ran him out. That ended England hopes and India won by 15 runs. Death bowling by Bhuvi has been topclass. In 2 ODI, England had scored 6 fifties and just Morgan converted to centuries. In India 4 different players went onto score centuries once they crossed 50. That was the difference. Kohli won his fisrt ODI series as Captain.  

Pakistan chose to bat against Australia. They started well as Sharrjeel and Babar Azam were knocking the ball well. Sharjeel after hammering as many as 8 fours and 1 six in his knock of 50 was castled by Head. Shafiq quickly followed. Shoib and Babar Azam then upped the ante as runs flowed fast. Shoaib got out against the run of play. Babar Azam and Umar Gul then consolidated. They were 213-4 at the end of 40 overs. But as usual, they collapsed to just make 263 . Though Australia were erduced to 44-2, Smith and Handscomb 188 run stand ended Pakistan hopes. Smith scored another ODI century.He has been in some form against Pakistan. Australia won by 7 wickets with 5 overs to spare.
