Hey, all!

   Investigating the local haunts in my area, I visited the spiritually renowned Benninghofen House. It is also the home of the Butler County Historical Society.  There were many local oddities and treasures.  

   If you visit the website, there is no mention of anything paranormal, but the book Haunted Hamilton, Ohio I've been reading does, so I went and asked for a tour.  

   I kept my mouth shut, waiting to see if they would mention anything at all about the commonly reported paranormal activity in the place. 

    About halfway through the tour the guides began to open up about the paranormal nature of the house. Upon entering a bedroom that contained several paintings of former residents, including the first Mayor of Hamilton James McBride, who is said to inhabit his old desk (and pull women’s hair and pat behinds- Not okay Mr. Weinstein- I mean McBride.  

   Also two small girls, Isabella and Anna Owens, who are reported to play in the hallway.  This was, the staff suppose, the happiest time of the girls lives. Each sister's life went in two very different directions. Isabella, at age 41, was committed to a mental institution, and her sister Anna sued her for her half of the estate.  

   Anna was deeply educated at home at Yale and abroad in Paris.  She never married. 

   Poor Isabella. At that time, and at her age, I suppose that a rough perimenopause and the ease of female incarceration may have contributed to a very sad direction for her life.  She died in the institution aged 57. Isabella is the girl in the blue dress in the first photo.

   The story of those two girls stayed with me the most.  

   There are plenty of other purported ghosts and residents in the Benninghofen House.  

There’s loads of creepy potential in this beautiful house, but the only thing I truly felt was in an upstairs bathroom, where I distinctly felt unwanted.  I suppose if there was a ghost there in the middle of their routine... well, I too would be unfriendly.  Get. Out. 

   By the end of the longish tour I was tired and ready to be done. I felt buzzy and lightheaded. Was that the result of spiritual energies? Perhaps. 

   I would like to return and experience the dowsing rod work of the woman who runs the place and claims to be able to communicate with the ghostly inhabitants. 

   I also would have loved to see some mention on their web site of the alleged hauntings. I think they are missing out, there. We are interested! 

   Well, that's my ghost hunting investigation of sorts. More to come as I read and hear about them.

By far one of the longest titles I’ve seen for a Mega Drive game, this title is, for all its longwindedness, a mahjong game. Based on the manga Gambler Jiko Chuushinha by Masayuki Katayama, the title effectively translates to “Self-Centered Gambler School: Masayuki Katayama’s Mahjong Dojo.” I shouldn’t have to say this about any mahjong game, but I will anyway: this game never left Japan, and no one has dared make a translation. At least it’s only mahjong, right? Shouldn’t be too hard to understand. Well no. The sheer number of kanji presented at rapid-fire speed is ridiculous. Most Japan-only games I’ve encountered to this point usually have text in hiragana and katakana, with only a smattering of kanji. With my basic Japanese comprehension skills, if I need to, I can set aside some time and make heads or tails of what’s going on.

Damn. Not here. The character designs are hilarious. The concept of a Self-Centered Gambling School is great. The fact that creator Masayuki Katayama got to attach his name to a Mahjong Dojo via a Mega Drive game… that’s pretty cool too. If you have advanced Japanese reading skills and you love a good game of mahjong, I’m willing to bet you’ll get some leverage out of Gambler Jiko. For the rest of us (or just me because, let’s be honest, nobody else is playing this game right now), it’s another forgotten oddity, destined for the bargain bins everywhere, and even then, no one wants them.

Rossville Historic District, roughly bounded by B, E, Main, and Amberly Dr., is a registered historic district in Hamilton, Ohio. The area takes its name from the old town of Rossville, which merged with Hamilton in 1854. Rossville was founded in 1804 as a separate city from Hamilton. It was named after Senator James Ross of Pittsburgh, a friend of George Washington and General Arthur St. Clair. Throughout the 19th century, Rossville was known for its inns, agricultural businesses, breweries, and industry. The town joined Hamilton in 1854, and served as a valuable refuge during the great flood of 1913.

The Rossville Historic Preservation Organization, founded in 1974, coordinates preservation activities in the neighborhood. One of their most popular events is the bi-annual Rossville Home and Garden Tour where visitors can stroll through many of the homes and lush gardens in the neighborhood. The district was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on October 6, 1975. It contains 123 contributing buildings. The neighborhood is located on the west side of the Great Miami River across from downtown Hamilton. Large mansions line South 'D' Street and other stately homes line Ross Avenue. Both sides of Main Street are lined with a variety of 19th century commercial buildings that once contained taverns, lively stables, hatters, meeting halls, drug stores, and grocers. The architecture of the Rossville and Main Street area provide excellent examples of all of the major styles of domestic and commercial buildings from the 1830's through the 1920's.

This 1900 stunner in Hamilton, Ohio just dropped for only $425K. In NJ, I might be able to get a 1 bdr, condo for that. Maybe.

The entrance hall is light and bright. 

All the Victorian fireplaces are in original condition and they’re all beauties. 

You can see that the doors are original by the hardware. Wish they weren’t painted over, though. 

The kitchen remodel is excellent, with it’s exposed brick backsplash and built-in cabinet over the peninsula.

Very large dining room. The fireplace in here is fancier, isn’t it?

Home office with another perfect fireplace.

The house only has 1.5 baths and this is the half bath. 

Here they’re showing buyers what a great place this is for a Xmas tree. 

Love the main bdr. That fireplace.

Each of the 5 bdr. are large, have an original fireplace, and are just lovely.

So lovely.

The only full bath is large and has been remodeled. 

Yay! Here’s some natural wood! Isn’t that closet under the stairs interesting? 

The gardens are impeccably manicured.

This home has been well cared-for. For $425K, it’s a steal.
