puts on my clown hat
behold, as requested: The Trans Franky Essay. Like most of this is still jot notes and I wrote this when half-asleep so like. I don’t know
Please don’t shoot me.
Section 0: Most importantly...
Due to the Somerton stuff, I really am trying my best not to plagarize.
Unlike TikTok user @theyboss._.franky, I’m not planning to talk about if he’s trans based on physical features, personality, etc.
I’m here to talk about the narrative in particular, and allegory.
also kudos to @punkitt-is-here
Tumblr media
[ID: A screenshot of an X post by @punkittdev that reads “this is also partially why i am a franky one piece trans man truther” It features Franky, a cyborg with a shirt that reads “I HRT”.with a sun between the words “I” and “HRT” Franky is a tall man with tan skin and blue hair, and has part of his arms replaced with blue metal with a star at the end. end ID]
Section 1: Cyborgs are inherently trans
I’m literally just going to link The transgender cyborg: an inexhaustive primer because the article does a much better job than I can, but to summarize:
Trans people are not only cyborg-adjacent because of the transphobes who call us that, but primarily because we are used in the same way cyborgs are in text: As a talking point, a disruptive metaphor about humanity as a whole.
That brings us onto the next place...
Section 2: Cyborgs are extra trans in this case.
The reason why I latched onto this in the first place is this character’s backstory.
Franky, who eventually becomes the Straw Hat’s shipwright, starts as a joke character in the Water Seven Arc.
He’s a 40-ish year old man who runs around in a speedo and shoots lasers at people, making a living off of dismantling ships.
However, as more information is revealed, the story starts to humanize and give him a backstory.
quotes from Chapter 358:
“My body got wrecked and parts of it weren’t working anymore... So I transformed myself using scrap metal. It’s how I survived!”
“Waste wood, scrap iron... I fit right in. First I’ve got to... ... Do something about this useless body of mine!”
What do these have in common? Retrofitting the self, and rebuilding the body. I think there’s something trans there but IDK
Deadnames (partially joking here): As said by another character “Cutty Flam of Tom’s Workers is dead. As long as you don’t use that name... ... There’s nothing connecting us”  (for context, Franky was changing his name to evade government capture, but shhh let’s just pretend we’re talking about deadnames)
Actual Section 2: The Boats are trans now
speaking of the self as a construct...
I think it would be giving Oda too much credit for doing this on purpose.
But, he also accidentally created one of the best analogies I’ve ever heard for gender identity and against gender essentialism:
And of course, it has to be boats.
chapter 353: “Franky, there’s no such thing as blueprints for a pirate ship!! If the sailors who board that ship run up a skull-and-crossbones, then it’s a pirate ship. If they fly a seagull flag, it’s a navy ship. Build whatever you want to build, Franky.”
Like again: It’s the idea that there’s no instructions for a person, it’s what you decide to create out of oneself?
Alright. So, in terms of most manga, he actually does a rather good job. One Piece is primarily a series about misfits and outcasts: The series is goofy and over-the-top as a rule. So, one could argue the extreme way in which he portrays trans people up until the Wano arc is just a part of the series.
yeah idk

To celebrate RAINBOW!'s release today, I'm going to go over all the daydream references that have been made so far, since it's fun for me to sneak them in 💖 there's a lot of them though, so it's gonna be under the cut!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Episode 1-- Kiki's Delivery Service and E.T.! People focus on the Kiki reference so much that the other seemed to be missed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Episode 2-- Princess Serenity and Prince Endymion, Sailor Moon. Another one obvious enough to be called out in some comments. It was referenced again in episode 54, where this panel was taken from.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Episode 5-- Marceline, Adventure time. One of the few reference that isn't an outfit specifically, but a character.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Episode 11-- Revolutionary Girl Utena. Not necessarily supposed to be the characters themselves, just the outfits.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Episode 11-- Minako Aino, Sailor Moon. In hindsight, I don't remember why I chose this specific dress to reference and not the maid outfits from Sailor Stars or the fruits maid outfits from the manga... especially since I think the fruits maid outfits are adorable.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Episode 11-- Catra, She-Ra reboot. I kind of regretted this one immediately just because like 80% of the comments on the episode were "CATRA SUIT!!!" as a result...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Episode 18-- Sailor Moon manga. I was always intrigued by the way characters would be dressed in dreamlike/ethereal sequences in the manga, so this reference was a must for me. I went with the version that is a full dress with straps rather than the dresses from other moments in the manga that have no discernible top half.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Episode 30 and 31-- Not a reference to any specific film or character, but just film noir in general. I do remember referencing a female character specifically for this but sadly I couldn't find it again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Episode 40-- Pomeranian scene, IT Chapter Two. Surely you saw this coming (or maybe not?) I don't think I got the camera angle good enough to really sell this reference, but I couldn't resist it anyways.
Tumblr media
Episode 43-- Adult Losers, IT Chapter Two. The only reference besides Marceline that references the characters themselves, since I normally use our other characters for background character purposes. Also one of the only references that isn't a daydream.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Episode 54-- Disney's Snow White and Cinderella. I couldn't decide which to reference, so I ended up leaning mostly into Cinderella, but referenced the Evil Queen's crown as well. Boo's dress is also somewhat referenced from the the live action Cinderella dress instead of the animated version, just because I liked it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Episode 54-- Treasure Planet and Treasure Planet 2 concept art. Treasure planet is one of my favorite movies, so there was no way I was missing out on referencing it. A few people brought up some wlw pirate webcomic(s?) in the comments of this episode, but the actual reference seemed to be mostly missed. The sash around Boo's waist is also meant to be fabric from her princess dress in the previous panels.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Episode 54-- Revolutionary Girl Utena. Another one I was kind of surprised wasn't called out just because of how iconic the whole clothed shadow/silhouette thing is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Episode 55-- Saint Tail. I couldn't reference this one as closely as I would have liked since it probably wouldn't have been very readable as a magician's costume to someone who didn't know it, so it mostly references the brooch from the anime and her hat.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Episode 61-- Jane Fonda in Spirits of the Dead. A super random and out there reference, especially to end on, but I liked the outfit so much that I couldn't help it. Maybe Boo used to fall asleep to old movie channels, lol.
That's it, at least for now! We'll have to see what shows up in future episodes~

Tumblr media
What to Expect When Sailing the Mediterranean
No matter what time of year you choose to sail the Mediterranean, there are a few things you can expect. The seas can be rough, with winds reaching up to 40 knots in some areas, so it’s important to be prepared for choppy waters. You’ll also need to be aware of the crowds, as the busiest ports can get very crowded, especially during the summer months.
How to Make the Most of Your Trip?
No matter what time of year you choose to sail the Mediterranean, there are a few things you can do to make the most of your trip.
First, plan ahead and book your itinerary well in advance. This will give you time to research the destinations you want to visit, and you’ll have a better chance of securing the best deals.
Second, pack appropriately. Bring comfortable clothing and shoes, as well as a waterproof jacket, hat, and sunglasses. You’ll also want to bring plenty of sunscreen, as the sun can be very strong in the Mediterranean.
Third, take advantage of local experiences. Whether you’re visiting cultural destinations or beach-hopping, be sure to immerse yourself in the local culture and try new things. Whether it’s trying the local cuisine, participating in a cooking class, or learning about the history and culture of the region, there’s always something new and exciting to discover in the Mediterranean.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What’s the best time of year to sail the Mediterranean for warm weather?
A: Summer, from June to August, is the warmest time of year to sail the Mediterranean.
Q: What’s the best time of year to sail the Mediterranean for milder temperatures?
A: Spring, from March to May, and autumn, from September to November, are the best times of year for milder temperatures. The sea is still quite calm, and the weather is great for sailing. If you want a more relaxing and quiet sailing experience, this is a fantastic time to go. All the spring months are ideal for a romantic yacht vacation.
Q: What should I expect when sailing the Mediterranean in the summer?
A: During the summer, you can expect warm weather, long days, and busy ports. Summer (July to September) is the busiest season for Mediterranean sailing. The weather is gorgeous, the water is calm, the destinations are crowded, and costs are higher, but it’s still a great time to sail and also ideal time for beach-hopping and water activities. Summer is also an excellent time for a family blue cruise, especillay with children.

[ID: a digital drawing of Ben Jackson and Polly Wright from Doctor Who, dancing back to back with their arms linked. Polly is a lovely blonde woman with long hair and bangs and strong eyeliner, wearing an orange dress with a black and white checkered pattern. Her hair flows around when she's dancing. Ben is a strong jawed guy with cropped brown hair and a sailor hat and outfit. The background is colorful, purple and streaked sith bright teal and orange. /End ID]
Ben and Polly! I didn't really connect to them the first time around but recently my sister and I watched their time more thoroughly and I found myself appreciating them and actually finding them quite underrated. So I wanted to draw them in their swinging sixties glory, jiving according to period refs! Well, I looked at some magazines for Polly, but I'll admit Ben is 40% dressed based on Donald Duck muscle memory.... Anyways. These two are neat and don't receive enough credit for their influence on modern companions.

1, 4, 18, 53 for the writer game?
Fic Writers Asks (thank you!)
1.Do you daydream a lot before you write, or go for it as soon as the ideas strike?
I daydream like it's an olympic sport and I am the returning gold medalist with somehting to prove. The entire tumblr phrase 'rotating [a character] in my mind'? Yeah. I'm doing that. But it's more to the effect that I am constantly thinking about what aspects/traits I love about a character and wondering what's the best way (a scenario) to highlight those things. This is usually done to music. My music and daydreaming are highly entwined.
4. How do you choose which fics to write?
I feel like I get a million ideas a day, that could all branch off into another million ideas. The ones that stick around go through a lot of filtering to catch things like "is this even in character for said character or just a fun little thought experiment for me, personally?" or "are you actually interested in writing that or do you just think it's neat" and "is there even a story here or is the line they said in your head just cool" and other things like that. I also ponder a lot on what an overall story progression would look like- a LOT of my story ideas start out as WAAAYYYYY too ambitious and would require a huge amount of buildup to my idea (typically something around the climax moment), and I have to figure out if there's an actual interesting narative to be built or if it would be boring (for me, to write) from the start and will I lose steam on it.
I used to write anything and everything that came into my head, but I'm a lot more selective of what I actually do commit to actually writing as a story these days. For example, I wrote what feels like 40+ stories for Voltron in like 2 years before I decided to get pickier, but note that a huge amount of those are unfinished due to lost interest, vs I now publish 1-2 stories a year, but they are all completed.
18. Do you enjoy research?  Which fic of yours required the most research?
It's 50/50, which is the worst answer to give.
I like fact-checking myself, and looking up things to help enrich stories (ex) slang/terms for ship parts for sailor characters, flora/fauna native to certain climates to add into backgrounds) but I do not like hard research such as knowing the history behind potato cultivation in our world so I can accurately state whether a fantasy society would be able to cook with potatos.
The most research I've ever truly done for a fic would be a tie between the Spn series The Love It Takes as I did a lot of cross-checking canon events to real world locations, and also planning out actual routes for the characters to take, as Spn is, at it's heart, a road trip across America and I don't know jack shit about that place. I specifically did a LOT of location research for an upcoming piece in that series (I had to learn what Bucc-ee's was!)
The other story would be Awake My Soul for the 100 series. The research there was, again, geographic so I could map out distances in a post-apocalyptic world, and also some brushing up on how to treat illnesses without modern medicine, and gene flow.
My research is never done to portray total accruacy, but so that I can do the writer thing of "take something real, and then shift it a few degrees to the realm of fantasy".
53. What is the most-used tag on your ao3?
Established relationship!
This would be because I either write pre-relationship stories, ambiguously romantic, or I write established relationships as I find the pacing for budgeoning romance to be very hard and my hat is off to all you amazing writers who tackle that particular narative thread because you are all geniuses and I respect you so much for your bravery and your service.

My first ever ball jointer doll came a couple of days ago. I forget what the name was originally but her name is now Madeline. She’s made from a cheap plastic (which explains the low price of £40). But she’s still really pretty, her main outfit (the one she’s wearing) is made from nice material but the extra outfits she came with are cheap disgusting plastic material it was horrid so I threw those in the bin. I’ve kept her accessories which include a hat, a tiara and sceptre set (kind of cheap plastic Sailor Moon wannabe vibe but not awful), a necklace and some earrings. I might not use any of them other than the hat but they seem ok and could be props for future dolls.
I kinda had a feeling with such a low price that the doll wouldn’t be as good quality. I might make some slight modifications like changing her lip colour. Her eyes close if you lay her down which is cool. I don’t think in confident enough to do a sleepy eye mod for my Blythe doll yet. Though I’m hoping to mod her pull string with some nice beads. I have a couple of other factory Blythes on the way. Hopefully by Monday they’ll be here.

70000 Tons of Metal gibt die ersten Bands bekannt
Tumblr media
Mach dich bereit für 70000TONS OF METAL 2025! Chapter 26 References (of which there are a lot...Lots of random historical footnotes here that have very little bearing on the plot or chapter - but if you were interested, here they are!)
As I mentioned in the references for 25, the length of the trip from Normandy to Southampton varies somewhat, depending on whose biography you read. I used the information from Winters' biography, Beyond Band of Brothers where it's mentioned they departed in the morning and arrived in Southampton the evening after.
From there, they overnighted in Southampton and then took the train to Ramsbury the morning after, to arrive in Aldbourne in the afternoon.
The morning after, Dick apparently gave all of E co a speech (behave yourselves, etc, etc, etc,) before dismissing them for their week-long furlough. What each man did was pretty varied (Johnny Martin and Bill Guarnere went up to Scotland together and I believe also got a matching tattoo along the way?) but suffice it to say, all of them went out and celebrated the fact that they had made it back to England alive. (Even Dick!!! went to London for a few days.)
Hat tip to some 1940s slang: anchor cranker means sailor. I learned that and had to include it. Also in a "blink and you'll miss it": Nix's field jacket pockets are overfull with live ordinance. Dick is known to have brought some back with him from Normandy (despite being under orders to turn it in) and he used this in training exercises, especially with the replacements that came to Easy while they rested and refitted in England. I've never seen mention of how he smuggled the ammunition back, so I decided that he enlisted Nix's help with this. (Fair's fair, especially with Dick helping hide his liquor.)
A brief note on the different personalities in different countries. The British in WWII got absolutely hammered with the airstrikes from Germany, and then also the rockets. While they were never invaded, they really suffered quite terribly. The propaganda (this was the era that the "keep calm and carry on" motivational poster originated in) really what we in hindsight, can look at and say that it's just this tremendously British attitude - the stiff upper lip, the stoicism, the quiet acceptance of just doing what needs to be done. It's a very different national attitude from France at the time (which makes complete sense, based on cultural background and different experiences) and it's giving Ellie a bit of culture shock, which she begins to explore in this chapter.
Speaking of national norms: Americans - measuring distance by time, rather than actual units of length.
Use of hot water was apparently limited during the war. This was a surprise to me (as best I could figure without going down too much of a rabbit hole, it had to do with the fuel necessary to heat the water - so use less hot water, to use less fuel). As a result, full bathtubs were a thing of the past. (Some people put lines in their tubs which indicated how high they could fill them - Eleanor Roosevelt encountered this in one of her visits to England.)
Final note: Carbolic soap was very common in the 40s. It was mildly antiseptic (but also, in modern years, has been identified as a skin irritant). I was curious to learn what kind of soaps or bathing accoutrements they would use in the 40s (especially with wartime rationing) and I came upon the carbolic soap bar information, which is why it got a hat-tip in this chapter.
Keep your eyes out for chapter 27, which will be updated in the next 5-9 hours!

Toonami skipped a 40 minute episode that explains Bakugo in the pirate hat and the hot air balloon. Long story short, balloon is to help them find oil so they can build an engine to get to South America faster. Blondie is an accomplished sailor.
