All in Color (or B&W) for 50-cents, or $1.00, or $1.25, or $1.95
It's a thousand pages, give or take a few I'll be writing more in a week or two I could make it longer if you like the style I can change it 'round And I want to be a paperback writer Paperback writer
In these heady days of the 2020′s, the collection of comic books into paperback volumes is such a given that many who read this material will only refer to it as the term Graphic Novels. In low-art vs high-art terms, I can understand why one wouldn’t want to sully their shelves with comic books, but, growing up during the birth of the American Graphic Novel I find it really hard to call a collection of comic books single issues anything other than a collection or using a publishing term, trade paperback.
Today, the comics periodical, or the comic book single issue (the pamphlet, the floppy) is released almost exclusively in comic book stores (of which there are roughly 2,300 in North America) every Wednesday. In today’s culture of Marvel movies and geek culture, I would argue most people who read comic books in the age of the trade paperback don’t read them in periodical form. The public no longer having the patience to read monthly cliffhangers now reads their comics in collected form found at bookstores, libraries and Amazon.
Why do publishers still trade in single issues if the majority of readers prefer trades? The economics of comics publishing are quite different that that of other book publishers:
1. The comics publisher depend on the monthly income of the single issues to pay for the production (talent cost, publishing cost, editorial overhead) of the comic itself. In order for the publisher to stay cash flow positive and make a profit on a comic book, the title must pay for itself (be profitable or at least break even) before it is collected into a TPB so that the only overhead on a collected edition of the printing of the trade paperback. If the majority of income on these books isn’t profit the the comics title isn’t economically viable.
2. The comics creators depend on the monthly income. These creators need to see monthly income (most have no job security or even health insurance) the same way that most American workers depends on the bi-weekly salaried paycheck. Most creators would welcome the chance to do more long-form work but in that scenario they would be looking at (maybe) an advance on the publication of the work and then a long period of creating the work, with no income, until the book was published.
3. The North American comic book stores rely on that weekly income to stay in business. Some stores are converting to more of a bookstore model, but many depend on the weekly sales of new comics to help cover the weekly orders they have to place to keep inventory in the store.
The idea of the comic book collection solidified in 1986, when three masterpieces of the form: Dark Knight Returns, Watchmen, and Maus were published. The mainstream books heaped coverage on these books and the publishers rushed to put them out in a format that could be found in mall bookstores such and Waldenbooks.
My copy of the Dark Knight collection from 1986
Trade paperbacks have gained in popularity with readers since the early 2000′s when big-box bookstores and Amazon made them more accessible. This format was always attractive to publishers because the material was already paid for. A collection had much higher profit margins than new material.
Of course, there were times (many times) when comic strips and comic books broke through to the public consciousness. So, how did book publishers capitalize on comic books before the trade paperback? They turned to their own popular consumption format: The pocket paperback.
Book publishers turned to their own cheap format aimed at mass consumption to publish collections of comics. The largest challenge was the size and format. Paperbacks are typically 4 inches wide by 7 inches tall while the average comic book is 10 and 1/8 inches by 6 and 5/8 inches. So how you fit a comic book into a paperback? Cut them up and show the art panel by panel.
This could be easy if the you were adapting a newspaper strip, The format lends itself to panel by panel reading.
The task becomes more complicated when dealing with really complicated layouts like Will Eisner employed in The Spirit.
Collection of six Spirit stories from Titan Books in paperback format from 1989
Signet collection of Batman and Joker stories from the 40′s and 50′s reprinted in 1967 as a paperback to capitalize on the Batman TV show craze.
While Signet worked to reformat Batman stories to fit on the small page size, Pocket Books would just shrink the pages for their 1970′s Marvel color reprints. This would make them incredibly hard to read.
This 1979 Pocket paperback billed it’s Hulk collection as “Seen on TV” but the fans of the loner on the run-style show would be hard pressed to recognize the out there sci-fi driven tales of these stories.
Many of the paperbacks were of more well-known comic strip and comic book characters but in 1984 The New Teen Titans saved DC Comics from shuttering its publishing line and licensing its titles to Marvel. Given the popularity of the title Tor put out a volume for the mass market in paperback form. Seeing the Perez art in black and white is neat but the detail in his art can be challenging at that scale.
The New Teen Titans Tor paperback from 1984. They dud a great job on formatting the age to keep the Perez art for it felt as dynamic as in the comic while keeping the type readable.
These paperback editions can be pricey in the back-issue section of your comic shop but they were popular enough to turn up with some regularity at used bookstores and thrift shops. Always a welcome and fun find, I really enjoy having a lot of this material being so portable. Even in the e-reader age there is something fun about 8 to 10 issues of a comic that can fit in your jacket pocket, even if some do require the near-sighted to break out their readers to enjoy..

30 Minute Experiment: Work #30ME
So I’ve already gone through a couple Pink Floyd titles and one from The Cult, so I might as well start working my way through The Godfathers’ Birth School Work Death in terms of topics for this 30 Minute Experiment. (For anyone just joining, the idea is that I pick a topic and write about it for 30 minutes straight, without interruptions. When the time is up, I post. No edits, no re-reads, probably many regrets.) Okay, let’s do this...
It will surprise absolutely no one that I’m a bit of a workaholic and I’ve been one for most of my life. I think my first job must have been when I was 14 or 15 or so when I got a bicycle and started delivering newspaper, a job that I quite liked because it was a quiet suburban neighborhood in Westport where not a lot happened. (I do remember one day being flashed by an older woman who came to the door wearing absolutely nothing not realizing I was on the other side leaving her newspaper.)
One of the weird things going on in this pandemic is that after losing a writing gig I had just started, it gets harder and harder to push myself to do the much-needed work I have to do, whether it’s doing these #30Mes or writing my weekly Weekend Warrior column or cleaning or working on some of my long dormant screenplays or even writing to my imprisoned penpal (who I just got a letter from so I need to get back to him fairly soon.)
At a certain point, everything seems like work, even if it’s just scheduling time to hang out on Zoom with friends or family, which is something I did far less of in the days pre-pandemic (Can we maybe start a new numbering system so that 2020 is Year One and every year that follows would be 1 Post-Pandemic for 2021, etc? It feels suitable.)
But this whole time and even over the past four years I’ve been spending a lot of time trying to find some form of steady work, and sadly, things were so unstable pre-pandemic that it’s only gotten harder as more of my movie-writing colleagues are losing jobs and there are far more opportunities. I mean, anyone who reads my Weekend Warrior every week (or EVER!) will know that there are still movies being released, even if not all of them are getting any kind of theatrical release. Some of them are even quite good.
I was talking to one of my colleagues last night about the work situation and how everything just came to a stop in March when most of us had things planned or in the works, which unfortunately revolved mostly around movies.
But the current situation has become a great equalizer in terms of people needing to cover a lot more smaller indie movies, TV series and streaming stuff if they want to keep their jobs. I’m pretty sure that the job market is going to look very different in a few months as the country starts slowly reopening, and I think the people who don’t want to do the actual work like going to see movies and having varied tastes, won’t survive. They’ll just give up and go take one of those regular 9 to 5 desk jobs that are out there.
Believe me, I’ve been ready to make that transition for a couple years as I lost a lot of freelance outlets, some being closed, others just going in a different direction. It’s tough out there, and it’s really hard for me to take any sort of dog-eat-dog mentality when it comes to work, because I don’t like seeing my friends struggling. That hurts me almost as much as my own struggle (which I’m happy to say has taken an interesting and slightly positive turn this week).
Sure, I’m definitely ready to be done with this and to get back to work, even though it’s been some time since I’ve had any steady work hours -- probably the Tracking Board where I was doing a 9 to 5 shift five days a week -- and I’m going to have to get back into some of the good working habits. I already try to go to sleep at a reasonable hour and don’t stay up past midnight playing video games (or Android games) or doing some of the other distractions that would keep anyone else from getting work done.
I mean, if you read today’s Weekend Warrior, you’ll see that I spent a lot of time watching and writing about a bunch of movies just so that people will have some idea that there is good movie entertainment still coming their way which hopefully they’ll look into it. I don’t want to too far down the tangential wormhole of the movie biz right -- I’ll have plenty of time to talk about that over the next few months -- but the pandemic equalizer that I mentioned hasn’t really helped the smaller indie movies as I’d hoped since people still would rather throw on Netflix or Hulu or HBO and binge watch some show or another.
I have a LOT of stuff that I’ve been meaning to watch but my desire to keep my brain in gear and stay motivated in terms of my writing has led to things like this experiment, which I’ve done a pretty good job keeping up with. If I really look at this to see how it helps me in terms of earning a living, I think I can say fairly that it’s a daily job that forces me to think and write quickly, which is something that’s important for most of the better writing jobs out there. And it only takes 30 minutes a day, so it’s not like it’s taking me away from any of the time-wasting activities I’d love to do instead.
Sure, I’m definitely trying to use this time productively even if the “work” I’m doing doesn’t do much to help me financially, although I will say that doing this stuff helps me both mentally and emotionally, which is half the battle when you’re dealing with a job and people you have to work with. I learned that the hard way at a few of my recent jobs post-CS, but I’m not going to get into all of that. I believe very strongly that sometimes you just have to do something to maintain your own mental health even when it’s not the best decision on the grand scheme of things.
I do miss having some of the structure of a job in my life even though I feel my calendar is just filling up with other things, even if it’s just doing things to help support my friend’s own mental and emotional health by taking part in their activities. Believe me, as much as the monotony of the day-to-day may have been getting to me a few weeks back, I feel like I’ve moved past that, and now I’m so focused and disciplined about getting things done, who knows? Maybe I’ll even have a few screenplays done by the time I’m allowed to go to a movie theater or press screening again.
I can only imagine how much harder this is for my friends and family who have gotten used to going to an office five days a week and have built their entire lives around that structure. Of my immediate family, only my sister and her husband and kids were doing anything in that vein, since both my brother and I have always been homebodies for the most part.
Right now, I’m not sure if I could even deal with going on the subway every day to go to a job, but thankfully, more businesses are figuring out how to stay running while allowing employees to work from home. At least as a writer, I don’t necessarily have to be anywhere, although as I’ve said before, I still prefer to see movies on the big screen... preferably without my own name watermarked across it. (This is done to avoid piracy, obviously, since it can be traced right back to me.)
Although I’m slowly inching towards a point in life where most people are ready to retire, I think I’ll be good to keep working in some capacity or other for at least the next ten years. The down time in between jobs these past few years has made it far easier for me to be thrifty so it’s no like I’m trying to support a ridiculous comic book habit anymore and have less need for consumerism.
I can’t remember if I discussed during the “money” topic but I do feel better when i know i have money just in case I want to do something fun when that’s allowed again. There have been too many times in recent years where I’ve had to decline an invite to go somewhere just because I was worried about how even spending $20 might affect my ability to eat for that week. (Yes, things got that bad!)
I guess we’ll see where things go in the next few months, but I don’t think you’ll meet another person who is more than ready to go to work for 40 to 60 hours a week once again, since I’ve also gotten better at scheduling my time. I mean, it’s still not great but when it comes to working, especially as a writer, I feel that I’m always getting better at facing new challenges, and I do hope some will still come my way.
I have about five minutes left to go in today’s #30ME, and I’m not sure if I have that much more to say about “work” right at this moment, but I do want to say that if you got far into today’s ramble, I hope you’ll drop me a line with some suggestions and opinions. It doesn’t mean I will change what I’m doing since as I’ve said, these are more for me than anyone else, but it would be nice if someone is reading them and maybe it changes their opinion of me (hopefully in a favorable way).
That’s it for me today but I’ll be back tomorrow..maybe talking about the “Birth” or “Death” part of that Godfathers song.

And while it never loses suction, when it senses the need for extra oomph — like when crumbs are overtaking the kitchen floor or pet hair is embedded in the rug — it’ll amp up its power to get the job done.
“Albuquerque dust is a pernicious beast. I also have two dogs and a slew of resident dust bunnies, so this is a big help,” shared a Walmart shopper. “It gets the dog hair and dust up easily — slightly appalled at how much dust came up after a regular broom sweeping. The edging function works great — clears out stuff from the bottom of the walls with ease. I have concrete floors and it scoots over it fine; has gotten itself successfully untangled from under the kitchen table…I talk to it like one of the dogs: ‘Oh, don’t forget that speck in the hall.’ ‘Good job.’ At least I haven’t named it (yet).”

Custom-made Gaming Laptops - 5 Things You Must Think About When Building a Gaming Laptop
Gone are the days when you would certainly have been made fun of if you strolled into an all-night LAN event lugging your dependable laptop and anticipating to hang with the huge computer system towers standing at everyone's feet. The gaming laptop computers these days sport significant, crisp LCD screens, advanced video clip cards and also full-size key-boards. Not only can these gaming laptop computers hang with the standard confusing computer system tower, but they can additionally be bought totally custom-made to satisfy the specific specs of any type of player. Because there are so many customizable parts in these laptops, a basic practice has actually been to create what some call a "system building contractor." This is the web page where you reach include and deduct parts with drop-down menus in order to develop the very best gaming laptop for your demands as well as your budget. This kind of page can be frustrating to someone just starting the gaming laptop buying procedure, however it is extremely convenient if you take it simply one part at a time. The Gaming Laptop GPU This is the heart of a gaming laptop computer. The GPU (graphics processing unit) belongs that will certainly make or damage your gaming experience. If your GPU isn't really up to snuff, your video games won't play. Without entering particular versions since they change at all times, the key is that the graphics card not share sources with the computer. A gaming laptop video card need to have its own memory on board. Typically speaking, common off-the-shelf laptops will certainly not have this feature. The two existing makers of laptop video cards are nVIDIA and ATI. Without the Display, You Don't Have Much What excellent is a gaming laptop without a display that can in fact render your games? Now absolutely, you can connect an exterior screen, yet if you can't actually use your gaming laptop without that external monitor, then your laptop isn't all that mobile. While the technology as well as terminology for LCDs (liquid crystal screens) might take up a whole post in itself, there are a couple of bottom lines to remember when choosing from readily available LCD options for your new gaming laptop computer: indigenous resolution, facet ratio, fluctuate time, contrast, viewing angle, as well as dimension. Indigenous Resolution. The indigenous resolution is merely the setup at which your display will render the clearest photos. Because video games are continuously in motion, a little soft edges might not bother most players, however remember that while this is your gaming laptop, you will likely additionally utilize it for other points like surfing the Internet. If the resolution isn't really comfortable, you typically aren't going to enjoy using it. Aspect Ratio. As you possibly recognize, a theater display and also a TV display have different proportions. Likewise, there are widescreen style gaming laptops and also there are laptops that have a standard aspect ratio-- like that of a TELEVISION. A widescreen style best gaming laptop under 50000 (a 16:10 ratio) has advantages and also disadvantages. Many video games today do not have a widescreen mode. This means that the video game may stretch throughout the display as well as come to be distorted or you may run it with black bars that complete the sides. There are ways to get around this, but if you desire an out of the box excellent experience, the widescreen layout may not be for you. That said, a widescreen LCD does offer a lot of screen realty for internet searching as well as various other type of computer tasks, and also a game played in a broad layout setup uses an extensive field of view. Consequently, there are some extremely faithful widescreen-loving gamers available. Do your best to discover an equilibrium between present and future technology as well as just what your computer habits are past gaming. Even with its constraints, the widescreen style is found on a lot of the very best gaming laptop computers. Fluctuate. The expression 'fluctuate time' is made use of to explain exactly how rapid the LCD could reply to changes. In the past, LCDs have actually been afflicted with the failure to render pictures as rapid as video game can spit them out. This presents a major issue for laptop gamers due to the fact that if they cannot see the photos correctly, they cannot play the game appropriately. This lag could suggest the distinction in between playing to win as well as barely playing. Thankfully, gaming laptop LCDs have come a long way and they are just improving. While when it was difficult to game on a laptop screen, the gaming laptop LCDs these days supply 25 nanoseconds or less rise and fall time while usually off-the-shelf laptops have 40 milliseconds or less rise and fall time. Contrast. If a gaming laptop LCD has poor comparison, that implies that the black locations aren't fairly as black as they must be and the white locations aren't fairly as white. This is important to a laptop player due to the fact that you have to see the video game effectively-- as it was planned to be seen-- in order to compete efficiently. Seek a comparison ratio of 400:1 or greater in a personalized gaming laptop. Watching Angle. This is an often-overlooked LCD feature, yet it must be considered if you are building a gaming notebook computer. Lots of premium quality LCDs on the market are tough to see clearly at any type of angle besides straight on as well as at the best height. This can be a huge disadvantage to gaming on a LCD display because a screen with inadequate viewing angles will not enable others to see the display as you play as well as injures your view when doing something as easy as readjusting your seating, which can require you to then adapt to placement of your laptop screen to see it appropriately again. But gaming on a laptop does not imply that you are destined have inadequate checking out angles. There are LCDs on the marketplace that have incredible viewing angles-- approximately 120 degrees. These screens not only enable gaming onlookers, but they likewise allow you to utilize that giant, crisp screen to do points like play movies or even make presentations. Size. In a gaming laptop computer, dimension is everything. Most gaming laptops are big, robust pieces of electronic devices. Having a machine of this stature implies you likewise get to have a big screen. The most effective gaming notebook computer LCD displays out there are at least 15 inches. A crowd favorite is a 17 inch widescreen (despite having the challenges that widescreens existing). Largr 19 inch laptop screens are simply beginning to be talked about with consumers expecting to see 19 inch and even big models on the marketplace in the future. The very best way to really obtain a feel for just what laptop LCDs are all about is to take a trip to a local box store and also have fun with the LCDs on the display screen laptops while bearing in mind what you have actually read below. While these laptops are not custom-made gaming laptops, you could see exactly what the dimensions truly resemble, what various resolutions appear like, and also what the checking out angles genuinely are so you can start to develop your own preferences. The RAM - What Kind and Just How Much? The RAM (random gain access to memory) discovered in laptops is called SODIMM (tiny overview double inline memory module). The RAM is in charge of your handling power. If you are looking for a custom-made gaming laptop, you will generally be offered DDR2 RAM with the option of what does it cost? you desire in your computer. Most premium games being launched today need 1GB of RAM for optimum, lag-free video game play. Some individuals are choosing 2GB to make sure that they can run numerous applications together with the video game and not experience any kind of slow down in feedback time. This is a huge investment and you want to be able to utilize this gaming laptop for a long time in the future. The majority of custom laptops are individual upgradeable, however this need to be left as much as experts. The CPU - Not Simply Mobile Technology The CPUs (central processing units) discovered in lots of customized gaming laptops are identical to those discovered in desktop computers. These chips call for a large amount of cooling down power, which consequently could make your laptop louder compared to light weight, reduced power ultra portables when the followers kick on and also it can become somewhat cozy to the touch. Don't be surprised by this-- it is regular. And with these desktop processors comes screaming power! Do not squander your money on the most up to date CPU launch that likely has a filled with air price tag (and that price will likely come down soon). Stick with an existing CPU speed that is supplied by a credible custom gaming laptop reseller, and also you truly can not go wrong. The Gaming Laptop Hard Disk Drive This is the final component to think about when constructing a gaming laptop. Laptop disk drives can be found in a selection of rates and also capabilities ranging from 4200 to 7200 RPMs and also 40 to over 100 GBs. Generally, this is user preference. Whenever feasible, opt for a 7200 RPM hard disk, however if you need a capability not provided in this speed, it's alright to go for the 5400 RPM drive. Take a look at your current computer system, and get your capacity based on this. Additionally bear in mind that with several custom-made gaming laptop manufacturers, you have the capacity to upgrade or include one more hard disk at a later day. At the end of the day, gaming notebook computer are about power. Don't anticipate a twelve-pound notebook with a desktop computer processor, various fans, a gigantic heatsink, as well as independent video clip card to last on battery power all that long. However do see to it to enjoy the jawdrops that you'll get as you walk right into your regular LAN party place with your brand-new, screaming-fast gaming laptop computer. Fracture that pup open, fire it up, and also stand clear of the drool as you tackle your preferred video game with fellow gamers gathered around to absorb the activity. Gaming is not just for desktops anymore!

Domestically, Demon Slayer: Mugen Train is keeping steady week on week at around 300 million yen (US$2.8 million) of box office revenue, whilst in South Korea, the Ufotable-produced film increased its weekly share to US$1.19 million.
Up to February 7 in Japan, Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train has brought in a box office revenue of 37.1 billion yen (US$351.3 million) on the back of 27.07 million ticket sales in 115 days. Demon Slayer is the first film in Japanese history to reach 37 billion yen and over 27 million ticket sales. Demon Slayer once again came in second against the live-action romantic comedy film Hanataba Mitaina Koi o Shita (Loved Like a Flower Bouquet), which increased its box office takings as Valentine's Day gets closer.
With the anime film consistently bringing in around 300 million (US$2.8 million) yen each week, and when the State of Emergency is lifted in Japan, it's looking increasingly likely that Mugen Train may make over 40 billion yen (US$378.6 million) in Japan within the next 6 months or so, an unfathomable feat for an unlikely film.
In the film's second weekend in South Korea, Mugen Train brought in more than its first weekend (not including previews) to a cumulative box office in the country of US$3.66 million. It still came in second behind Soul. Worldwide, Demon Slayer has made US$388.3 million at the box office, inching it ever closer to your name.'s worldwide box office takings (including re-releases).
The difference between the two films is only due to currency fluctuations between the two films as the yen ebbs and flows against the United States dollar, though it shouldn't be long until Demon Slayer surpasses your name. and then challenges Spirited Away's crown of the highest-grossing anime film worldwide.
Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train opened in Japanese cinemas on October 16 and had the best opening weekend in Japanese cinema history, becoming the highest-grossing film in Japanese theaters ever. A 4DX version of the film was be released in Japan on December 26. You can read our review of the film here. The Ufotable-produced anime film continues to adapt the manga series by Koyoharu Gotouge, which saw a TV anime series adaptation in 2019. The film is scheduled to be released in the west in early 2021. The Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba TV anime series streamed on Crunchyroll as it aired.

13+ Things Your Locksmith Won’t Tell You
By: Michelle Crouch Updated: Mar. 20, 2019
A good front door lock is your home’s first line of defense. Save money while keeping your house safe with these expert locksmith tips.
1. Many of Us do Undercover Work for the Cops
We make keys for them and get them into places at 3 a.m. so they can set up surveillance equipment or put the bugs in place. It’s part of the thrill of doing what we do.
(Photo: iStockphoto/Thinkstock)
2. Contractors Stink at Installing Dead Bolts
I can’t tell you how many times I go out to rekey one or let someone in, and I find problems. If it isn’t correctly installed, it won’t protect you.
A properly installed dead bolt should have at least a one-inch “throw,” and on the “strike side,” there should be a security plate with screws at least three inches long that go all the way into the door’s wood frame.
(Photo: Hemera/Thinkstock)
3. Have a Housekeeper Who Needs a Key?
Ask me to key your door so that your master key works on both the dead bolt and the doorknob, but hers works just on the knob. On the day she comes, lock only the knob.
(Photo: Jupiterimages/Goodshoot/Thinkstock)
4. Windows Can be a Liability
If you have a window on or near your door, a thumb-turn dead bolt won’t do much good. They knock out the glass, stick a hand in, and turn. Get a double cylinder lock that needs a key on the inside.
(Photo: iStockphoto/Thinkstock)
5. Despite What You See on TV…
…think twice before you buy a locked safe at a flea market, estate sale, or auction. It’s probably going to cost you $300 or more to open it, and chances are, all you’re going to find is mouse poop.
(Photo: iStockphoto/Thinkstock)
6. A New House Should Mean New Keys
When you buy a new house, always have your locks rekeyed. Otherwise there’s probably a master key out there that can easily open your home.
(Photo: Brand X Pictures/Thinkstock)
7. Keys Stamped “Do Not Duplicate” Get Duplicated All the Time
Ask me about high-security locks with keys that can’t be replicated at the hardware store.
(Photo: iStockphoto/Thinkstock)
8. We’re Supposed to Check ID Before Opening Anything
But half the time when someone is locked out of their house or car, where do you think their ID is?
(Photo: Goodshoot/Thinkstock)
9. The Biggest Mistakes People Make with their Safe?
Spinning the dial too fast, trying to open it before it’s unlocked, and forcing it closed when there’s obviously a problem.
(Photo: Creatas/Thinkstock)
10. I’ve Seen My Share of Dead Bodies
It’s never a good sign when the landlord calls to get into an apartment, and nobody’s seen the tenant for ten days.
(Photo: David De Lossy/Photodisc/Thinkstock)
11. Divorce Lock-Outs Are a Challenge
The soon-to-be-ex wife will call and say she’s locked out, so I get her in and change the locks. Then the husband calls with the same request. I refer him to a competitor.
(Photo: iStockphoto/Thinkstock)
12. If You’re Locked Out, Only Call One of Us
More than once, I arrived at a lock-out to find two competitors’ trucks already there. At that point, we all agreed to leave and abandon the inconsiderate victim.
(Photo: Jupiterimages/Goodshoot/Thinkstock)
13. Never Tell Me, “Don’t Worry, It’s an Easy Lock”
Every time someone says that, it takes an extra ten minutes to get it open. It’s the kiss of death.
(Photo: Hemera/Thinkstock)
14. Car Keys? We Can Copy Them for Less
Don’t believe a car dealer who says only he can duplicate keys. In most cases, a locksmith who specializes in automotive work can make you a key-usually cheaper.
(Photo: Polka Dot Images/Jupiterimages)
15. WD-40 Can Help
If your key won’t turn, try WD-40 or silicone spray. Sometimes the pins get jammed up, and 25 to 40 per cent of the time, that solves the problem.

16. Please Try the Door Before Calling
I’ve gone to houses and found it open. (And yes, I’m still going to charge you for the service call.)

10 Affiliate Marketing Strategies That Generated Us Over $1M in Income
The landscape for affiliate marketers has changed significantly over the past year.
From tighter legislation for affiliates, to Google cracking down on thin affiliate content, and a general increase in competition on the web, it’s becoming increasingly difficult for affiliate marketers to get ahead in the game.
Despite this, many smart individuals and companies continue to generate millions by staying one step ahead of the rest.
So, what is it that affiliate marketers need to do to succeed in 2017 and beyond?
1. Go one inch wide and one mile deep
Many first-time affiliate marketers make the mistake of going one mile wide and one inch deep: trying to dominate forty niches in their first few years.
When you hear about friends making millions from Clickbank products, and marketing products in emerging niches, it can be tough to stay focused.
The price for losing focus, though, is having a portfolio of 21 websites in random niches all with a pitiful domain authority generating next to nothing in sales.
By all means, experiment with different niches once you’ve achieved a level of success you’re happy with on your first website, but to begin with go one inch wide and a mile deep.
2. Create content that your competition can’t compete with
One of the biggest challenges facing affiliate marketers right now is the need to prove their value as middlemen in the value chain.
One of the biggest advantages affiliates have over established brands, and one of the greatest opportunities to add value, is the ability to be agile and act quickly with content marketing.
While brands spend months approving their content strategy and holding fruitless meetings, affiliates can be creating content of such a high standard, that competitors simply won’t have the resources to compete with, and Google would be foolish not to drive traffic to.
This is the strategy that we’ve adopted for most of our affiliate marketing sites at Venture Harbour.
Take Qosy for example. Every 4-6 weeks, Qosy publishes a 3,000 – 8,000 word guide educating readers on tough buying decisions, such as how to choose the best scotch or an engagement ring. While not all of these posts contain affiliate links, affiliate links are often added if a site we’d be recommending anyway has an affiliate program.
It’d be hard for Google to argue with this content not adding value. After all, some of the guides have received close to 10,000 shares and have been used by the brands themselves to educate their own customers. Generally speaking, each guide takes about 40-50 hours to produce, and is benchmarked to beat the best existing piece of content on the topic in virtually every aspect (from design and share-ability, to page speed and on-page SEO).
Over the next year I think we’ll see more and more affiliates adopt this kind of strategy.
3. Build a brand that adds value to the consumer
It’s no surprise that Google’s brand-bias is strengthening. For many affiliates, this is quite a concern, as affiliates haven’t traditionally had to concern themselves with building a strong brand.
When you look at the leading sites in insurance, travel, property, personal finance, and homeware, it’s interesting to note that many of these sites are affiliate sites. They’re also strong brands.
Moneysupermarket, Agoda, Houzz, Which, LastMinute.com, and Compare.com are all ultra-successful affiliate sites due to the strength of their brands, their editorial integrity, and the value they offer consumers.
Over time, affiliate marketers will find it increasingly difficult to succeed without a brand that user’s trust, so consider what you’re doing to develop the brand of your affiliate website.
4. Build a foundation of recurring affiliate revenue
With affiliate marketing, there is no assurance that your current strategy will work in a month’s time. Whether it’s due to Google updating their ranking algorithm, your favourite affiliate program shutting down, or media buying costs increasing, you’d be wise to mitigate against the possibility of major changes.
There are two very effective ways to do this: diversification and by building your recurring revenue.
I’ll talk about traffic diversification in a moment, but let’s first talk about recurring revenue.
Most affiliate marketers focus on one-time payouts, which is generally smart as, due to inflation and the ability to earn interest, $100 today is worth more than $10 per month over 10 months.
The problem is that one-time payouts don’t protect you against major changes in your strategy. That’s why I recommend building up a portion of your affiliate revenue in recurring revenue.
Obviously, the feasibility of this approach depends on your niche and what products are available to promote. If the option is available, I’d highly recommend building a foundation of recurring affiliate income so that you peace of mind that no matter what happens you still receive a certain amount per month for the foreseeable future.
5. Don’t rely on a single traffic source
In February 2011, many successful affiliate woke up to find that they’re probably going to go out of business in a matter of weeks or months, no thanks to Google releasing the initial panda update.
The same thing happened again when Google launched the Penguin update in April 2012.
It’s happening to brands who’ve built up organic Facebook Page audiences, and it’s going to happen time and time again across many third-party platforms whose business model revolves around selling eyeballs.
Some of the people hit by these updates were good friends and clients, which is why I’ve been preaching about diversification of traffic ever since.
Ideally, you should own your audience – not rent it. If you absolutely have to rent it, rent it from multiple sources.
6. Be prepared for mobile
In November 2014, mobile accounted for 46% of all affiliate clicks and 26% of all affiliate retail sales. How does this affect the individual affiliate?
For one, if you’re directing traffic to sites that aren’t mobile friendly, you’re probably losing a lot of potential commissions.
Google have also started to send some rather blatant nudges to webmasters that their websites should be mobile friendly. In November, they launched a mobile-friendliness checker and began experimenting with displaying whether a page is mobile-friendly or not in search results.
So, having a mobile-friendly site could become a good strategy for outranking your non-mobile friendly competitors in the search results.
Another consideration is that with more people using and purchasing from mobile devices, certain niches, products, and search criteria will rise in popularity, and can be capitalised on by forward-thinking affiliates.
Needless to say, if you’re not prepared for mobile, you’re preparing to be left behind.
7. Get in front of breakout and seasonal trends
Affiliate marketers have been taking advantage of trends for a long time. Yet, new trends continue to breakout, creating hundreds of new weird and wonderful multi-million dollar niches every year.
So, how can you find out what trends are likely to emerge this year?
The first differentiation to make is between seasonal and breakout trends. Seasonal trends are recurring, and often predictable, peaks in popularity that you can prepare for in advance.
Google Trends is your best friend for identifying seasonal trends. While you can just type in a keyword to see how it’s search volume fluctuates throughout the year, you can also use the category functionality to find seasonal trends in specific industries.
Breakout trends are much harder to predict. From electronic cigarettes and online TV, to selfie sticks and cinnamon flavoured whisky, even the most experienced industry experts often have a hard time predicting as far as six months into the future of their industry.
Regardless, reading the predictions of experts in your industry is a good place to start. If you want to know what products might be worth promoting in the travel industry this year, for example, you might want to experiment with search queries like:
You could even try to predict which countries are about to increase in popularity, and begin promoting hotels, flights, and other products that might help people traveling to that area.
Finally, there are a lot of great websites like TrendWatching.com that can help you estimate where the World is heading. Ultimately, though, knowing what’s around the corner comes down to having an acute awareness of what’s being talked about and piquing people’s curiosity in your industry.
8. Promote products that raise your affiliate income by an order of magnitude
When I began affiliate marketing, I promoted products ranging from $0.10 commissions to $100 commissions. It soon became clear that, while having a large volume of low commission sales can create a solid foundation for your affiliate revenue, true growth comes from high commission sales.
My strategy for growing affiliate sites has always been to find products that add value to the site’s readers, and that also have the potential to increase the site’s revenue by an order of magnitude.
If you’re currently generating $1k per month, what products will get you to $10k? If you’re at $10k, what do you need to do to get to $100k?
The answer is usually quite simple: you have to add an extra zero onto the size of your commissions or the amount of traffic you send to publishers. More often than not, this requires a refocus on which products you promote.
9. Focus on topic targeting, not keyword targeting
Google’s attempt to reduce the SEO community’s focus on keyword targeting hasn’t exactly been subtle.
From removing keyword data in Google Analytics and exact-match keyword targeting in Google Adwords, to improving their understanding of similar terms, it’s becoming harder for digital marketers to target individual keywords.
While on the surface this may seem like bad news, it’s arguably a blessing in disguise as it encourages a shift towards topic-targeting, and a focus on capturing long tail traffic.
Instead of trying to rank your content for ‘best gardening tools’, you might instead focus on creating an in-depth piece of content on the topic of gardening tools that helped gardeners choose the right tools for their garden.
By taking this approach, it doesn’t matter whether you rank for ‘best gardening tools’. What matters is the aggregate amount of relevant long-tail traffic you receive to the content.
10. Experiment with unusual content formats for recommending products
A few years ago I heard the story of how an app developer tried to download the Amazon app to make a purchase from his phone, only to realise Amazon didn’t have an app.
He developed an unofficial Amazon app, which was effectively just an app that displayed their website in an iframe. Of course, every single product included his affiliate link – so he earned 5-8% of every sale bought through the app.
Because Amazon didn’t have an official app, his app became extremely popular, making him a very, very, rich man.
I wanted to end on this point to get your creative juices flowing. Most affiliate marketers do the same old thing in a different niche, when the biggest rewards are usually reserved for those doing the exact opposite.
In 2012, I created WhatIsMyComfortZone.com (a calculator that measures the size of a persons comfort zone). Essentially, it works by filling out a survey on what challenges you’d be willing to overcome, and then it spits out a breakdown of how your score compares with other users, along with a few recommendations.
If a user said they wanted to skydive, their results page would include a link to book a skydive. While I never expected to earn anything from these (what’s the likelihood of someone impulse booking a skydive?), I decided there was no harm in making these links affiliate links.
To my surprise, I checked my Affiliate Window account after 12 months, and what do you know, a bunch of people did impulse buy a skydive, earning a $40 commission per sale.
While a few skydiving referrals hardly made me rich, these two stories will hopefully give you some ideas about alternative formats for affiliate marketing.
Imagine if, instead of writing another 1,000-word review on the top 10 products in your niche, you developed a calculator or a quiz that used a series of criteria to automatically redirect them to the product that’s best suited for them?
Above all else, 2017 is going to be a year where affiliates need to get creative, out-think the competition, and really prove their worth in the value chain. If you have an idea you want to test, you can now get it live for less than $3 – so what are you waiting for? Make it happen.
