Mad Mike’s FURSTY by TCP Magic, 2024. Presented at the Tokyo Auto Salon. Kiwi drifter Mike Whiddett began his career with this Mazda Savanna Wagon but sold it to fund his FD RX-7 drift car. Fast forward to October last year when Mike was able to buy the Mazda Wagon back and pass it onto TCP Magic. They have fitted a 26B 4-rotor NA engine with HGT sequential transmission and Winters Performance quick-change differential, there's also a Rocket Bunny Pandem wide-body kit and custom Rotiform wheels.

Mazda RX-7 FD 
When we think of Mazda classics, we often to the MX-5 (Miata / Eunos) as the world’s most popular 4-cylinder roadster ever. However, it is worth mentioning that the engineering excellence shown in the 1990’s is but a compilation of decades of effort and experimentation, including limited engagements with the Wankel rotary engine. Starting with the Cosmo in the 1960’s, a two-rotor design, this engine was perfected and carried well into the 1990’s under the Cosmo (Japan only) and RX-7 guise. By the early 2010’s, Mazda discontinued rotary-powered cars with the RX-8, citing poor compliance to emissions standards and a reputation for oil consumption issues, largely due to the engine’s inherent design and the lack of user experience with it.

Suzuki RE-5 1974 – Extraordinary rotary engine!
In 1971 Suzuki bought a license from Wankel, precursor of the rotary piston, in order to develop a new engine for its motorcycles. Suzuki's investment in this project was significant because at that time Dr. Felix Wankel's rotary engine was a revolution and was just beginning to be mass-produced. For Suzuki, it was necessary to start from scratch and launch, something that many manufacturers will never do. Suzuki works hard and invests a lot to produce a reliable and robust engine. After two years of development, 200 modifications and 20 patents filed, the fruit of this hard work ensured the creation of a reliable machine called Rotary RX-5, presented at the Tokyo Motor Show in November 1973. Following slight modifications , the concept became RE-5 and was marketed in 1974.
The engine of the RE-5 is a single-piston rotary 497 cm3 developing 62 HP. To control its operating temperature, Suzuki adopts liquid cooling and uses the imposing radiator which was nicknamed at the time "the hot water bottle". The RE-5 had a rather high power and torque for the time compared to the displacement, and above all immediately available with very linear revs! The very particular melody of the rotary engine confirms that we are dealing with an engine like no other. It picks up low with flexibility, offers generous torque worthy of a big 4-stroke, and is characterized by the almost total absence of vibrations, a real treadmill! Weighing 230 kg on the scale, the RE-5 inherited the best technology of the time to be able to stop it: a double disc at the front.
The design of the motorcycle was entrusted to the coachbuilder Giorgetto Giugiaro who endeavored to recall the principle of the rotary engine through many details: the dashboard is cylindrical, the indicators are all round, the rear light is also cylindrical and circles appear on the side covers, all in an atmosphere inspired by the futuristic universe at the time straddling the Star Trek series and the Star Wars trilogy! The Suzuki logo, for its part, takes up the design of the rotor, in a triangle. This original line, to say the least, arouses astonishment and takes you directly to the 70s, certainly the most prosperous in terms of technological innovation. When you turn the ignition key to the first notch, the translucent cylinder of the dashboard opens (hence its nickname "bread box"! ) on a row of indicator lights, including the one that validates the two oil pumps. There is even a small digital window that indicates the gear engaged. Guaranteed sci-fi atmosphere!
The RE-5 is nothing conventional and never goes unnoticed. Sold in only 6000 copies worldwide between 1974 and 1976, it is the only rotary engine motorcycle in the world to have been mass produced. Unjustly misunderstood at the time because of its atypical design and the unknown that reigned around the Wankel engine devoid of camshaft, valve and connecting rod, the RE-5 whose consumption was relatively high had the misfortune to fall into the context of an oil shock. It did not have the success expected by Suzuki and the rotary engine was abandoned despite the colossal sums committed to this project. Today the RE-5 looks like an alien and is a fascinating machine with mind-boggling technology. This absolute rarity will find its place with an eclectic collector. Our very nice example Firemist produced in October 1974 has frame 10702 and engine RE5-10394. In perfect condition with its original paint, it shows only 6248 miles on the odometer, corresponding to its original mileage. How has no one told me about the Mazda RX-792P?!?
It’s a 4-rotor, only three cars were built, and only two raced (all of this in 1992). They never won a race but one car did come in 2nd at Watkins Glen, which is actually quite good considering how new/undeveloped the car was. Also LOOK AT IT; it’s LOVELY.

My gender is a 1986 Mazda RX-7 FC two seater sports car powered by the 1.3 liter, naturally aspirated 4 Rotor 13B Wankel engine (more commonly known as the Rotary engine) which produced 255 Horsepower at 6,500 RPM and 217 lb-ft (294 nm) at 5,000 RPM through a different way than a piston engine in the sense that it used a 3 sided spin ing rotor to produce power instead of a piston which had the benefit of less moving parts meaning you could make a smaller and lighter engine that could produce the same numbers as a larger, heavier piston engine

Geneva ‘73 - 50 Years on Sbarro SVI, 1973. Franco Sbarro displayed for the first time at Geneva in 1973 but made the most of it with the Safety Vehicle 1 concept in addition to the Tiger. Whereas the Tiger was based on a earlier Bertone concept, the SVI was all his own work. The interior was strengthened by a concealed roll-cage and the car came equipped with sprinklers that activated in the event of a crash to prevent fire. Most extraordinary of all it was powered by two NSU twin rotor Wankel engines producing a combined 300hp. Failing to attract any buyers, the car was displayed again in 1974 repainted red.

The so-called JC series of the Cosmo began to be manufactured in 1990 under Mazda's Eunos brand and its design was based in certain aspects on the MX-03 concept of 1985. Aesthetically it was elegant, but it did not stop offering good performance. And it is that its engine was one of the most striking factors of this generation. Under the hood could mount a 13B-RE twin turbo engine, although the most acclaimed was the 20B, a three-rotor Wankel rotary engine. Such amount of technology in the first half of the 90s was not common, which made the car not exactly cheap. This affected its sales and 8,875 units were sold in Japan.

NSU is an abbreviation of the city the company was based in, Neckarsulm.
The company started as a producer of knitting machines in the 1880, but soon produced bicycles and later motorcycles and cars. After world war II, production of motorcycles resumed first with pre-war models, later with new developments.

When the market demanded proper cars instead of motorcycles, NSU reacted by launching a small car driven by a rear-mounted engine made by bolting together two motorcycle engines. The car was called “Prinz” (”Prince”). A distinctive feature of this car were the wrap-around rear side windows. The Prinz came in three incarnations, simply numbered I (basic), II (more luxurious interior), and III (stronger engine).

In 1959, a coupe version appeared called Sport Prinz. It featured the same small 600 cc engine, which now delivered 30 hp instead of only 20 hp in the sedan.

In 1961, the Prinz received a brand-new enlarged body styled after the Chevrolet Corvair and was now called Prinz 4. It retained the rear-mounted two-cylinder engine of its predecessors. In this shape, the model was produced until 1973.

The Sport Prinz was developed into a convertible, which was equipped with a revolutionary engine: a single-rotor Wankel engine. In 1964, it was the first car with this type of engine produced in series.

Also in 1964, the Prinz became available with a 1000 cc four-cylinder engine producing 43 hp. In combination with the light body, the car was zippy and fast.

The next development of the Prinz was a model with an enlarged front, offering more interior space and boot. The 1100 cc (53 hp) and 1200 (60 hp) engines were unusually powerful for their time.The Prinz had reached the level of mid-sized sedans.

In 1967, a groundbreaking new model appeared: the Ro 80. The wedge-shaped body designed by Claus Luthe influences car design until today. Additionally, the car was equipped with a smootly running two-rotor wankel engine and a semi-automatic three-speed gearbox. The innovative suspension led to aroadhold never experienced before and simultaneously a comfortable ride. The front-wheel drive and long wheelbase allowed for an unprecedentedly spacious interior. The car was quite expensive and although the car had good comfort, some buyers were slightly disappointed with its bald interior design. Worse, the rotary engines were prone to premature failure, which was partly due to false treatment by the owners, partly due mechanics overchallenged with the new technology, and partly due to suboptimal choice of materials in the combustion chamber caused by the pioneering technology. The latter issue was resolved soon by using better materials, and intense training improved the performance of the mechanics. The first issue, however, poor treatment by the owners, remained a problem – driving tests by factory engineers proved that the engines were good for more than 200,000 km. Firstly, the rotary engine were happy to rev and could easily be revved to destruction. Secondly, the semi-automatic gearbox made it possible to start in the highest gear, which led to overworking the engine at low revs and premature wear. NSU responded to these issues with a generous goodwill policy, but the damage to the reputation of the model and its technology was done and the generous repairs wore out the financial capabilities of the company. In fact, the policy was so generous that 35 % of the exchanged engines turned out to be in perfectly fine order. The model remained in production until 1977, and the later units produced under the control of Volkswagen were very reliable cars. The inherently high fuel consumption of the Wankel engine meant that it was not installed in later Audi models, although this was considered for a long time.

In 1969, Volkwagen arranged a merger between its Audi branch and NSU. By this time, NSU had already announced a new mid-sized sedan named K 70 powered by a convenional piston engine, which was derived from the earlier four-cylinder engine of the Prinz, but enlarged to 1500 cc. Since Volkswagen had only dated rear-engined models such as the beetle, the type 3, and the type 4 in its portfolio, the NSU development was marketed under the Volkswagen brand. Volkswagen first enlarged the engine to 1600 cc, later to 1800 cc. The blocky shape of the car meant a poor drag coefficient and consequently a high fuel consumption and low top speed. The elaborate construction meant high production costs and the car was not as inexpensive as carbuyers felt a Volkswagen should be. The intention to position it as a more upmarket model failed due to its relatively small size.
