FP2: Alonso steals spotlights from Red Bull duo
FP2: Alonso steals spotlights from Red Bull duo By Steven De Groote on 03 Mar 2023, 20:53 As the Aston Martin threat seems to become more and more reality, Fernando Alonso ended up faster in second practice at Bahrain. World Champion Max Verstappen was a close second fastest with his Red Bull teammate Perez third. Second practice at Bahrain is always an important session as it provides cooler conditions compared to first practice and is importantly scheduled at similar times as qualifying and the race. Alonso made perfect use of it and further warned his rivals even though his 1:30.907 is still 6 tenths away from the best time that Perez recorded in pre-season testing one week earlier. Alonso did two qualifying runs on the soft tyre and headed the session while Verstappen complained about the bumps at Sakhir International Circuit, additionally saying that his RB19 was jumping more than it was in testing. Behind the top three was Charles Leclerc who was only narrowly faster than Formula One returnee Nico Hulkenberg in his Haas. Lance Stroll ended up 6th as he discovered the AMR23 on his first day in the car. A cycling incident had ruled him out of pre-season testing but a similator test with increased steering forces was satisfactory for the team to let him compete leaving reserve driver Felipe Drugovich sidelined. The Candian however had to be helped out of the car after the session, raising concerns whether he is ready to compete a full Grand Prix. While Pierre Gasly showed the first signs of some pace in the Alpine A523 in 7th, Lewis Hamilton was the fastest Mercedes in 8th. As Norris and Zhou Guanyu completed the top ten only Alpha Tauri and Williams were not represented. These two teams filled the final 4 spots of today's ranking, in line with the predicted pecking order from testing. Results Pos. Leclerc grabs controversial pole & Penske is struggling!  - Saturday Racing Round Up
F1
It is a shame, that a qualifying as good as that, ended with a Red Flag, as it looks as if it would have been very tight for pole! It has also led to many conspiracy theories, which I doubt are true!
What an incredible weekend it has been for Ferrari, and we haven’t even got to the race yet! It was clear that they were a true threat for pole all day, however Verstappen was just slightly faster I feel today, and if he had got that final run, I think he may have got pole, although it would have been close! Firstly, to clear up the big story, of course it was not on purpose, you wouldn’t crash on purpose, if you wanted to hold people up, you would go down an escape road, or pull a Schumacher. Doing it how Charles did it, caused a huge risk to the gearbox, as he knew too well afterwards!
Unfortunately, that has really overshadowed the result, as we don’t know if he was fastest, as I said, Max may have just got him, but it would have been close. The thing is though, at the end of the day, Leclerc made a mistake, and admitted himself he just pushed beyond the limit because he was down on his previous lap. This is becoming a bit of a theme, especially on street circuits, where he goes over the limit, trying to go big. He should have settled with his first lap, as he was 2 tenths up on the field, and 2nd would have been huge for the team. All his mistake has done, is overshadowed his pole, and probably annoyed some fans, and could have ruined the weekend completely!
The key thing to take away, is that the other drivers should not have left everything to the last run in Q3. If there is any circuit on the calendar where someone could make a mistake, it will be here, they should have been in Leclerc’s position, and nailed run 1, to then go all out on run 2. It just happened to be the pole sitter that was the one to make an error. The good news for Verstappen, is that he is well ahead of Lewis on the grid, and has a great chance of winning tomorrow. Can he make the most of it?
Bottas for once was the star at Mercedes, as he could turn on the tyres much better than Hamilton! Mercedes claim that Bottas would have found 2.5 tenths on that last lap, however the team will naturally overestimate that, and even if he did gain that much he would be just behind Charles. Nevertheless, today has really helped his stock value in the team! Lewis will be glad about the pole controversy, as it has caused people to overlook a disastrous day for him, where he could not find a rhythm at all. Can he do anything tomorrow?
Just like Max and Valtteri, Carlos was caught out, having been a match for Charles all weekend, he seemed to be the most annoyed, but as I said, he had that first run just like Leclerc did! Great runs for Norris and Gasly as you would expect, getting ahead of a Mercedes! It will be tough for them to keep him behind though, even around Monaco. Giovinazzi in Q3, and Russell in Q2 also drove rather well!
It is hard to know if Ferrari have the race pace to win, my gut says no, which could cause a close battle for the win. Which on tight streets, with Max and Charles’ history, means Bottas could win tomorrow!
IndyCar
Day 1 of Indy 500 qualifying, was a tale of 3 parts really, in the first part, everyone did their first run, where going early helped as you would expect, although Herta and Rossi going late could go fast, showing it wasn’t that bad! Then once everyone had run, and the track heated up, no one could improve, so they all sat around for a few hours. This then built into a stand off in the pitlane, as the track started to cool, as everyone wanted to be out at the right time! In the end though, no one could really improve, which shockingly left Power in the final row shootout tomorrow!
It wasn’t just Power though, all 4 Penske cars weren’t fast, with Newgarden and Pagenaud below 20th , whereas McLaughlin was the best of the bunch, doing excellently in his first attempt! I think Will can make it tomorrow, they were just unlucky today! My picks to go home, looking at the pace today, are Enerson and Kimball. Top Gun Racing is improving, but I doubt they can find the speed they need, and Kimball is much slower than his teammates for some reason!
Turning back to the front of the pack, Honda as we thought, is dominating, although a few ECR cars did get into the fast 9. It looks as though it will be between CGR and Andretti for pole, with RLL being better in the race. Another shout out to Fittipaldi, who was not looking that quick in the week, but he pulled it out when it mattered to be 13th!
I will say a Herta pole, as he loves this weekend so much, even more than the big race apparently!

Although Hamilton stayed behind for more than 1.5 seconds on Leclerc & # 39; s time, the world champion and his team are expected to at least significantly reduce the gap in qualifying and offer Ferrari a pole position as the lead rider.
Verstappen & # 39; s third fastest time came thanks to a slipstream behind the rival car on the long straight, and Red Bull was able to experiment with the use of his teammate Pierre Gasly to drag the Dutchman into qualifying.
Gasly has already been confirmed to start from the pit lane after not stopping on the weighbridge during Friday practice and was the slowest of all runners in the last session.

Ferrari end fastest and favourites for Melbourne
New Post has been published on https://grandpx.news/ferrari-end-fastest-and-favourites-for-melbourne/
Ferrari end fastest and favourites for Melbourne
Charles Leclerc and Ferrari finished the day fastest with that 1:16.231 from the morning session. Pierre Gasly crashed his RedBull and ended the team’s run for the day.
Leclerc’s laptime was set on the fastest, softest C5 tyre – and was an enormous half a second faster than second placed man Alex Albon with a 1:16.882s. To put the lap into perspective one has to remember that Hamilton’s pole last year was only six tenths faster.
Though that time from Ferrari is fast its very unlikely there were running at full engine mode, light on fuel and attacking the track. Times in reality are likely to be much faster still, depending on the circuit involved because top line speeds will be faster while the lack of downforce for 2019 will see cars go slower, specially on tracks like Silverstone.
Lando Norris time was also set on the C5 Compound tyre as was much of the times at the top of the table –  the exception to this clearly being Mercedes and RedBull.
RedBull run exclusively on the C3 tyre and Gasly’s fastest time of the day was a 1:17.091. Though impressive, many were hoping for the Bulls to drop into the 16s with their sister team Toro Rosso.
Mercedes once again stayed out of the limelight and continued to focus on mileage and reliability, raking up an impressive 181 laps, trouble-free. Their long run pace was impressive but as per testing, we have no gauge as to how much fuel they were running and many believe they run extra heavy to conceal their true pace. However Mercedes fastest lap was a 1:18.097 placing them 9th on the charts – bu that lap was set on the second slowest tyre of Pirellis’s range and tyre corrected that is their fastest lap of winter testing thus far.
Are Ferrari really the favourites come Melbourne? While many believe the hype of “glory runs” the more experienced, senior figures of F1 aren’t so sure. Every year Ferrari produce quick laps over the Winter Testing period yet the difference in pace come race day never materialise to a gap we usually expect from testing. The wild card is definitely RedBull and we can expect them to have a strong spec for Australia – whether that pace will translate into engine heavy circuits like China or Spa will depend on what Honda managed go gain over the winter.
Timesheet
1) Charles Leclerc, Ferrari, 1:16.231, 138 laps, C5 tyres
2) Alex Albon, Toro Rosso, 1:16.882,118 laps, C5 tyres
3) Lando Norris, 1:17.084, 84 laps, C5 tyres
4) Pierre Gasly, Red Bull, 1:17.091, 65 laps, C5 tyres
5) Daniel Ricciardo, Renault, 1:17.204, 65 laps, C5 tyres
6) Nico Hulkenberg, Renault, 1:17.496, 73 laps, C5 tyres
8) Lance Stroll, Racing Point 1:17.556, 103 laps, C5 tyres
8) Antonio Giovinazzi, Alfa Romeo, 1:17.639, 71 laps, C5
9) Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes, 1:18.097, 85 laps, C2 tyres
10) Romain Grosjean, Haas, 1:17.854, 16 laps
11) George Russell, Williams, 1:18.130, 140 laps, C5 tyres

Sainz proves Ferrari qualifying pace with Austin pole position
Sainz proves Ferrari qualifying pace with Austin pole position By Steven De Groote on 23 Oct 2022, 01:17 Carlos Sainz narrowly beat his teammate and Red Bull's Max Verstappen to pole for the United States Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas. As Leclerc takes an engine penalty, Verstappen will start from second on the grid as Perez and Hamilton are to make up the second row. The start of qualifying followed the announcement of the death of Red Bull founder Dietrich Mateshitz, a shock for the F1 world despite the knowledge that the Austrian had been seriously ill for some time already. "As he would have wanted, we now head into this qualifying exactly as he would have wanted it to be. He was passionate about F1, passionate about the team, and our determination is to go and do our best for him today, and obviously in the race tomorrow," said Christian Horner just before the session began. For Alonso and Leclerc the session was compromised due to engine change penalties: 5 places for the Spaniard and 10 places for the Monegasque. The session begins with some immediate action in the form of Magnussen heading straight out on the soft compound tyre. It is the red-marked rubber all the way, with Schumacher, Latifi, Albon and Zhou also going for an early run. 3 minutes into the session everybody was out on track and soon Leclerc emerged in front. Sainz further improved on that with a quick first sector and a nice tow on the back straight by Vettel after he had aborted his first flying lap. 5 minutes from the end there was bad news for Zhou as his time got deleted for track limits. Zhou would however bounce back strongly and end Q1 in 10th, a tenth up on his teammate and 3 tenths up on the elimination time. The Haas drivers were far less impressive they were both out. Schumacher notably spun off early on in his second flying lap, resulting in 19th overall in qualifying, ahead only of Williams' Latifi. Ricciardo had another disappointing qualifying while Ocon, despite having a new floor (spec 4b) on his Alpine also dropped out whereas Alonso was 7th fastest at the time. Sainz and Leclerc topped the times in Q1, ahead of Verstappen, Hamilton, Perez and Russell. The second part of qualifying saw a slower start with Bottas and Zhou topping the timing sheet at the halfway mark. Many were on track at that time though and soon the entire top 7 of Q1 emerged again in the top 7 spots, albeit in a slightly different order. Leclerc was the fastest this time around, followed by Verstappen, Sainz, Russell, Perez, Hamilton and Alonso. In the closing stages positions from 7th to 15th switched rapidly, resulting in Stroll, Bottas and Zhou making it through. It was only for a minute however as Zhou saw his time deleted yet again for track limits at Turn 12. This dropped the Alfa Romeo to 14th and promoted Norris into the top 10. The hot laps in the final part of qualifying kicked off with Russell but before reaching the end of the first sector timing point he backed off to try again after another slower lap to manage the tyres. As Russell went round to prepare for his lap to 6th, Leclerc completed the fastest lap around Circuit of the Americas in 1:34.624, 0.159s quicker than Sainz and 0.420s ahead of Verstappen. As Perez settled in behind Perez, Hamilton emerged third fastest with his first flyer, a tenth faster than Verstappen. Even after Russell completed his first timed lap, Stroll moved up into 7th after having gone out late out of the pits. The Canadian did 6 tenths better than Alonso and an extra 4 tents to Norris. Second time out Leclerc improved a tenth but Sainz shaved off more to take pole position. Verstappen qualified third at 0.092s but is set to start from second place thanks to the 10-place penalty of Leclerc. Perez stranded at 3 tenths from pole while Hamilton failed to improve on his second run and ended up 5th, just ahead of his teammate Russell. via F1Technical.net . Verstappen narrowly beats Ferraris to Suzuka pole
Verstappen narrowly beats Ferraris to Suzuka pole By Steven De Groote on 08 Oct 2022, 09:14 It was dry for qualifying at Japan so it were the usual suspects who eventually emerged on top. Max Verstappen took pole in the end though both Leclerc and Sainz came very close to beating the Red Bull driver - who is still under investigation for an incident on his out-lap. Home hero Yuki Tsunoda kicked off dry qualifying with a lap of 1:31.631 to again greet his fans. He was soon followed by his teammate Pierre Gasly. The Frenchman who was just announced as an Alpine driver for 2023 was 4 tenths slower on his discovery lap before returning to the pits to take on a fresh set of soft tyres. The McLarens were out next to lead the rest of the competitors. While most immediately opted for softs the Mercedes drivers completed their first flying lap on the medium compound Pirelli, an attempt with which they ended up 15th and 18th 10 minutes into the session when everybody had completed at least one timed lap. By then, Verstappen had gone fastest, a tenth quicker than Sainz and Leclerc, 0.379 ahead of Alonso and 4 tenths ahead of Perez. Three minutes from the end the Mercedes duo moved up into 6th and 8th thanks to soft tyre runs, sandwiching McLaren's Ricciardo. Lando Norris on the other hand made a mistake at Degner on his first effort and was 7 tenths slower, down in 13th. The dying seconds of the first session saw Norris rectify that situation while Ocon improved to 6th. Mick Schumacher also had a good run to 13th and into Q2, bouncing back from his heavy crash in yesterday's FP1 that again badly damaged a Haas car. In any case he did a good job as team mate Magnussen was out, along with Gasly who struggled with the brakes, Stroll and both Williams drivers. The second session went on without medium tyres in sight and again with Verstappen going fastest about halfway though this time less than a tenth faster than Sainz. The gap as slightly more than a tenth to Leclerc and then Ocon, followed by Ricciardo, Hamilton, Alonso, Perez and Russell, all within 4 tenths of the pace setter. Bottas found himself in 10 with just 0.583s to the front. Behind him were Norris, Vettel, Zhou, Schumacher and Tsunoda. 3 minutes 20 from the end a big pack of cars left the pits for the final dash of laps to secure a position in Q3. Vettel and Ocon were first, followed by Perez, Bottas, Zhou, Schumacher, Tsunoda, the McLarens and the Mercedes duo. Alonso and Norris went out 30 seconds later and only the top three at the time remained in the pits. Improvements were surprisingly big with Vettel going 5th and Perez jumping to the top of the timing sheets, 0.421s quicker than Verstappen's previous best. Alonso also improved considerably to second with three personal bests. The big loser was Daniel Ricciardo. The McLaren driver sat in 5th but his failure to improve - partly due to a big lockup in the final chicane ) saw him lose out in 11th while his teammate Norris did the reverse and went on to go 8th fastest. Ricciardo notably missed out on Q3 by 0.003s to Vettel. The final part of qualifying was another Verstappen affair, topping Leclerc, Sainz and Perez. Fernando Alonso ended up 5th fastest, followed by Vettel, the Mercedes duo, Norris and Ocon. The big event though was when Verstappen braked so hard on the warm-up lap on the exit of Turn 15 than Norris had to go through the grass to avoid a big accident. The incident was to be investigated after the session (again). The second efforts saw Leclerc improve considerably but strange at 0.010s off of Verstappen. The latter didn't improve while Sainz also went faster, even though not enough to move up from third. Perez ended 4th and a late improvement from Ocon saw the Frenchman qualify 5th, marginally ahead of Hamilton and Alonso. via F1Technical.net . Motorsport news https://www.f1technical.net/news/

Fernando Alonso only stopped the Formula One at the end of the 2018 season, but he was soon back in the paddock after attending the first day of the last winter test
The twofold world of McLaren , who has driven with McLaren, has arrived at the Circuit de Catalunya in the team's clothing and catches the No. 14 with which he ran in his F1 days.
Alonso signed signatures for fans and watched some of the action-job in a year in which his main focus will compete on the 24 Hours of Le Mans and also on the Indy 500.

McLaren too fast, with Lando Norris fastest for the team during the first of the last four test days in Barcelona
Admittedly, the Brit & # 39; s time of 1m17.709s came on the second softest compound and it was only a fraction faster than Red Bull's Pierre Gasly who runs the medium compound.
