Whoops! I forgot to post about #3riversartsfestival @culturaltrust opening yesterday, it was a beautiful & busy day from the jump. We’re Booth #74 on Gateway Plaza and we’ll be here, right under this big aluminum? steel? building until Tuesday night - 12 to 8pm each day. The Three Rivers Arts Festival

If you haven’t noticed (and if you’ve been downtown, or even driving on the Parkway over Point State Park, you’ve definitely noticed), the 56th annual Three Rivers Arts Festival is in full swing. Being held this year from June 5th through the 14th, the Festival is a Pittsburgh mainstay, drawing in hundreds of vendors and graphic and performing artists, as well as several thousand attendees each year. If you’ve not made it down to the Festival yet this year, you still have time, but before you run out the door, we want to give you a look at the events of years past.

Did you know that jazz great Ella Fitzgerald sang at the festival in 1982? Or that at the very first event in 1960, a strong storm rolled in, blowing 10 of the juried paintings into the river? Local Pittsburghers will joke about the fact that the Festival always ensures that it will rain for at least SOME of the event’s duration (it IS still time for spring showers!), but a beautiful day down at the Point and in the Cultural District is still a big enough draw for the estimated half a million attendees who visited in 2014. That’s a long way from the 20,000 that came in 1960!

Shown here are programs from the earlier years of the festival: Clockwise from top left, 1963, 1970, 1972, and 1968. Each lists information on the artists involved, as well as maps and schedules. These programs came from the A.W. Mellon Educational and Charitable Trust Records, the Trust being a large financial supporter of the event.

One of Pittsburgh’s most prolific photographers, Bud Harris, won an award in 1984 for his photograph “Milltown,” shown below.

In addition to being an award winner, Harris also took photos of the event over the years. These images from 1972 give you a glimpse of what the Festival used to look like. Not so different after all!

Local photographer Charles Martin also attended the Festival, snapping a few shots of his own.
