Heartbreaking: There's another 3DS user directly next to you but they have wireless communications turned off, meaning the two of you can't streetpass

[ID: a photo of a black 3DS, showing its hub page. It features several folders with symbols on them, and a few assorted programs outside of the folders. The theme is a bright rainbow-coloured mess of colours, hearts, and multi-coloured dalmatian dogs. End ID]
Everyone look I made over Charlene, her games r in folders now :3

You Wouldn't Download a Badge: Badge Customization (and preservation) on 3DS
Badges on 3DS were introduced via the Nintendo Badge Arcade, where using the application allowed you to get badges via crane game and place them on your Home Menu (fun!). These days, the badge arcade is down, but badges live on via homebrew and custom badges. Let's discuss options.
Before I say anything, I always encourage manual backups. If you have badges already, consider backing up that data to another device, a cloud service, anything you have access to. You never know if you'll encounter a nasty undocumented error or if your SD card will come loose at a bad time. Backups of all kinds are always a good idea!
GYTB is an older custom badge application that is still functional. Simply place your desired badges of the correct file size and type into a "Badges" folder on your 3DS, and they'll be analyzed and converted into usable badges upon running the application. You can make your own, or download them from anywhere you'd like! Just make sure to delete any "Preview.png" files from Themeplaza badge sets.
GYTB Automatically dumps your original Badge Arcade badges and installs them alongside any homebrew ones. Shortcuts, however, will need to be restored manually, which can be done with a simple rename and running the app a second time. GYTB does not support multiple "sets" of badges or QR code installation, and many consider the software obsolete because of this. It has very little to offer in terms of features, but its barebones nature makes it easy to use.
Anemone is well known as THE way to install custom themes, and has added badge installation support! Besides letting you put any old PNG on your SD card manually, Anemone also supports themeplaza QR code downloads, which can be very convenient. Anemone supports multiple "sets" of badges, useful for organizing your badges into different visible categories.
If you already have official badges from the Badge Arcade, you must manually dump them using Anemone BEFORE installing custom badges, or they will be removed. But fear not! Since version 3.0.1, Anemone creates an automatic backup at /3ds/Anemone3DS/BadgeMngFile.dat & BadgeData.dat. You can retrieve your data from there! Hooray! Source. You may still need to manually recreate shortcuts.
Both applications should give you the "Place Badges" option even if you did not have it previously upon installing custom badges - just make sure everything is set up correctly! Please be sure to do your due diligence and read the usage guide of your application of choice, else you may run into issues!
In the event that you accidentally scorched your official badges off the face of the Earth due to some sort of horrible accident (like if that data has been corrupted beyond repair), fear not! Some nefarious individuals have engaged in...*Gasp!* Badge Theft...Could you imagine? Horrid individuals violating Nintendo's intellectual property by distributing PNG files for free? How scandalous! Anyway, here's an archive of the official badges from Badge Arcade. Note that badges that are meaning to point to system apps will just be PNGs, so you will, again, need to add the shortcuts back in manually.

I want to change my personal mii on 3DS!
Looking to get back in the swing of 3DS play with the introduction of new fanmade services, but want to change your Personal mii so that your pre-existing better, cooler mii appears in the friends list?
Check this out! (GBATEMP mirror) (Wayback machine mirror)
As a note, in order for this change to stick, You have to go in and edit details of both miis (the old personal mii and their replacement) in the 3DS mii maker, like their hairstyles, otherwise your 3DS will simply clone your old personal mii over the new one. After you've done this and ensured that your miis are all good after a device reset and/or entering and exiting the friends list app, you can change the details back.
Make sure to back up your CFL_DB.dat file in the event that something goes wrong.

many people have pointed out that they wish the open_agb_firm project could add sleep mode. while it is indeed unfortunate that the 3DS's GBA mode (and by extension, open_agb_firm) is unable to access sleep mode, i've been enjoying the fact that it can't quite thoroughly by listening to Sonic Battle music on the train when my 3DS is closed! i'm so glad this thing has a headphone jack.
